hello first off SORRY THIS TOOK SO LONG FOR ME TO ANSWER but no i don't mind giving my opinions on the side characters

Arata and Kotaro are actually two of my favorite side characters! I didn't like them that much at first to be honest but they've definitely grown on me a lot recently.

I think Kotaro is really overlooked actually. Like I still see people bring up his actions in the main story when he’s moved on a lot past that, and then just write him off because of it. And I mean, it’s probably because he never got too much screentime between then and Power of Unity, but since he’s been making more regular appearances I think they’ve taken his character in a really interesting direction. He initially became a singer because he wanted to be a cool older brother for his baby brother and just happened to see RW at that time, which pushed him into street music. He just did it as a passtime because he was sort of good at it. However, RW did have a big impact on him, just like it had on An and Akito, even if he was only sorta casual in the street music scene. He admits in POU that the reason he never went further was because he was afraid, and seeing VBS putting their all into it inspired him.

It’s sort of subtle up until Light Up the Fire, but Kotaro doesn't have a lot of self-esteem or confidence in his singing. I think the first time it's ever brought up is in Power of Unity as far as I remember, where he asks once or twice if he's holding everyone back. LUTF makes it really clear that he has a lot of insecurities: he believes he's holding everyone back and he believes that he has no talent compared to the others. And that's what sticks out to me, because 3/4 of VBS have felt the same way. Kohane, Akito, and Toya all at some point or another believed they were holding everyone back, be it because they were a rookie, lacking talent, or had no resolve. Kotaro has been all of those and it’s obvious that he is written the way he is to serve as a mirror character to those three. He's had the same insecurities but the way he goes about dealing with them is totally different. While VBS had each other to rely on, Kotaro doesn't have a singing partner or group. He's a solo artist. And while he works with VBS, Arata, and EVER, he isn't part of any of their groups. Even Arata who also works alone still has Souma, but more on that in a minute.

(Also just an aside, I think he’s a mirror to Kohane slightly more than the others, and that slightly being the fact that VBS is what got him inspired to take this seriously, because that’s how Kohane got inspired she saw the others and wanted to be just like them, she wanted something to throw herself into and give her all to. The fact that she’s the main one who tries to call out to him when he breaks down in LUTF I think also plays into this, like it seems to hint that she’s able to relate to him.)

I really think Kotaro is much more than how he was presented in the main story and could definitely become a pretty strong side character if he ever got an event with a bit more focus (like how Vivid Old Tale gave Nagi a lot of screentime or POU had a lot of focus on Arata). Also clpl have you ever considered giving Kotaro a partner please give him a partner. Considering you rubbed in how important singing partners are before now why haven't you even tried to give him one?

Arata has definitely been given more development than Kotaro and I genuinely think he has one of the best arcs of any side character. Like he starts out as a rival for Akito, a foil to Akito. He's basically everything Akito wants to be, and also kind of a dick. Him getting beat by Taiga though, even though it was a small moment, was definitely an important turning point for him because it put him on the same level as everyone else. Because even he has someone better than him.

Oh and his development in POU was so good I'm probably gonna go on a little tangent about his relationship with Souma now because it's so important to his character. Arata's doing all of this for Souma. Souma was the one who wanted to do street music, Souma was the one who took Arata to RW, everything was Souma's dream, but it was still important to Arata. They were partners after all. But that's what it is. Were. Even if Arata wasn't the one who was in that car accident, it still took a toll on him. Souma has been forced into a position where he isn't going to be able to achieve his dreams, so Arata has to carry all that weight on his back. Surpassing RW suddenly has become so much more important to Arata because he wants, needs, Souma's dream to become a reality. The thing is, with how caught up he was in doing everything for Souma, he approached everything on his own. Surpassing RW isn't something he can do alone; the original was a collaboration between several groups, there's no way Arata could do it alone. He needed to work with people again, which he finally realised in POU.

Actually I think one of my favorite moments in his arc has to be his showdown with Taiga in LUTF. Because he's been able to overcome what was holding him back, he's actually able to get closer to Taiga's level. That is, until Taiga drops the "we're not so different" bomb. Because that moment is so powerful. Because at that point we see Arata as less of a foil to Akito and more of a parallel to Taiga. Both of them went through a similar loss of a partner, and Taiga uses that to get under Arata's skin and he goes for a deep cut. Souma is incredibly important to Arata, and Taiga knows that and had a similar experience of losing someone important to him, and is able to see exactly what’s still holding Arata back from reaching his full potential. Arata is doing all of this for Souma. For Souma. Taiga points out that Arata isn’t carrying Souma’s dream, he’s clinging onto the idea to cope with his grief. The thing is, Souma can’t surpass RW anymore. Arata’s loaded that responsibility onto himself, without even considering his own feelings on the matter. As Taiga says, Arata is good, great even, but he can’t be the best unless he asks himself if he wants this. Arata can’t even say that he is carrying Souma’s dream, that he does want to do this and he isn’t just clinging onto the idea to cope, and it crushes him to the point of leaving Shibuya.

Honestly I think leaving was what was best for Arata in that moment. Because he does need to take a step back and just let himself actually process his grief. Because even if Souma is still alive, that partnership was still lost and Arata had dedicated everything to that partnership and to Souma, and really he still does. And honestly I think this is what he wants even if you take Souma’s dreams out of the equation, but he needs time to himself to think about what he wants. I don’t know when we’ll next see him again honestly it might be a while but I’m interested to see how that goes. Arata is surprisingly developed and nuanced for a side character and the fact the devs managed to do this across 3 events, two of which he only appears in for a couple chapters is insane. Oh yeah also I like him a bit more than Kotaro if the wall of text wasn’t obvious.

look i love my boy, but baxter literally dumps you outside of your childhood home, shuts the door in your face even if you’re sobbing in the middle of the street, and then ghosts you for five years and then pretends he doesn’t care about you when you meet again. this is even if he’s aware that he’s your first love (if you chose to make him that). he literally says that you have bad taste in men if you choose to date him again before you’ve talked anything over shshhshssbb. love him but he needs a therapist waaaaayyyyy more than he needs a partner.

ok so i havent actually seen all of his route cause the game's only available in japanese and the streamer i watched play the game switched to a different guy like halfway through the game n i seriously doubt anyone else is gonna submit him i just need someone else to know about this so! ryouta and the player character (doesnt have a canon name but is given the nickname of marii by the two girl friends) were friends in kindergarten with ryouta having a very blatant crush on her n wished on a pinwheel for them to get married when theyre older he then moves to england as soon as he gets old and he n marii dont interact at all until nine years later when he comes back for high school and is still very blatantly down bad for a girl he last talked to when they were six but has spent the last nine years still thinking about (theres something in the game you can unlock called adv events where you get the love interests pov on moments in their lives and one of ryouta's reveals that even though he couldve he never sent marii any letters but very much did spend all those years thinking about her) n a lot of his interactions with marii are weird n circle back to him being obsessed with them being friends as kids and like a first it just kind of seems like oh he hasnt gotten over his puppy love yet lol but it is kind of like acknowledged that this is a weird thing in game as if marii gets his gift in the christmas exchange ryouta will say something about it being fate n marii pointedly ignores that n is like wow what a coincidence that we got eachother's gifts (not in an oblivious heroine way btw ryouta's straight up is like oh ok ur ignoring what i said) n he treats her like shes naive n completely innocent which like marii is cause shes a mostly blank slate otome heroine but its still noteworthy as being weird due to his aforementioned memorialization of them being friends in kindergarten n that none of the other love interests really treat marii that way or really make note of those being notable traits of hers that often while its something ryouta does frequently anyway so the moment that made my thoughts on ryouta switch from "lol hes kind of weird" to "i want to study him like a bug" is that His Bedroom Is The Exact Same As It Was When He Was A Six Year Old Child In Kindergarten And Hes Keeping It That Way On Purpose like genuinely thats immediately read to me as horror movie shit imagine reuniting with a childhood friend of urs who keeps bringing up stuff you did as kids (that you dont really remember cause you were like six n are now in high school) n making comments about how naive and easy to read you are n gets weirdly jealous about other guys being buddy buddy with you and then like a year or so after hes moved back n you've becomed friends again he invites you to hang out at his house so you go over and then His Room Looks Like It Belongs To A Six Year Old and hes telling you about how his room hasnt been altered (beyond cleaning) at all since he left n since hes come back hes chosen to keep it exactly the same n hes telling you this like its a reasonable thing literally what the fuck also while ryouta is the posterboy childhood friend love interest of this game theres another love interest who was both ryouta n marii's childhood friend and you'll never believe this he treats her like a normal person and is just a normal guy who barely remembers being friends in kindergarten and him n marii only learn that theyre childhood friends cause of ryouta being mildly exasperated that neither of them really remembers them being a trio when they were six theres definitely like worse love interests i could submit from this series (like the teachers n one of the three secret love interests in the second game whos route is just straight up him emotionally abusing the heroine) but im submitting ryouta cause his reasons for sucking as a romantic partner are bizarre n live rent free in my mind

like WHAT !?!!? there is so much more of a crazy element to breaking da game than im used to, especially when used in the context of a pvp heavy turned lore (more so circumstance and event) based server like it ACTUALLY COMES INTO CONFLICT RAHH we r usually just a bunch of gamers sitting around in little test servers (i was more so an in-game code guy rather than an exploit guy, im basing all my inner technical knowledge on what my friends r thinking from the context ive shown them)

im SOOO interested in how the characters play out here, like with the tyrant groupchat and some of the key players in there (pangi, reddoons, planet, SPEPTICLE !?) and how THEY were the ones supposedly getting big power

i think planet knows a lot more about what's going on than what vitalasy thinks (i have a theory that planet's trust barrier was given by spoke, maybe it couldve been given by vitalasy to more so keep him quiet? but ive been brain rotting over a planet and spoke team up so im mad biased) and spoke is much more of a leaker than i thought! he is definitely one of the least secretive members about all dis and whatnot, but his ideals are geared towards fun fun for every1 (himself)

also vi is showing phase 2 rn this is going to be FUCKING INSANE ! im soo sosoooososososo exited omhgg kicking my legs laying on my stomach twirling my hair and drawing hearts and stars around the word exploit in glitter gel pen and giggling

this has been SUCH an interesting season im still stunned by stream viewers who say s3 was the best but maybe im a nerd whatavar whatavar ....

i am going to rant and you are going to listen to me >_( hahahahaha muahhahaha but s4 has been so new and interesting from the START. those two main groups forming at the village and the outpost and their outliers was the domino effect of extremes. im on red's side here when he said that that was the main catalyst for WHY duality duo went to the lengths they did, and how THAT, the moment subz stepped into the end to see the main island completely wiped was SUCH a crucial moment to the rest of s4 development

that was the known start. that's what, to everyone else, was the beginning of consequence

but now, there's the added factor of the plan before s4, but these extremes were needed to make a reason to use these exploits in an interesting way. yeah okay, leviathan is not a threat anymore. TO US THOUGH!!!! ONLY TO US!!! because we know everything, we know what's going on and leviathan has NO IDEA what they're in for, but what does terrain, leo, ANYONE ELSE think about them? Are they scared? probably !

but seeing this as a viewer.... a watcher haha of everything we KNOW a FRACTION of how much danger everyone is in. we dont know to WHAT EXTENT !!!!! HOLY MYSTERY !!!!! im so so so excited to see how they use this

Norse Watch: The Northman (2022)

Well.

So, I just finished listening to the audiobook of the translated Völsunga Saga, and then some pals asked if I'd yet seen The Northman (2022), and while those events were unrelated, they did dovetail.  I hadn't quite gotten to the movie despite liking the prior Eggers film I had seen and a general interest in the content.  I was aware of middling opinions of folks on the street (it's got a 64% audience reaction on RT) - with some folks also camping out in the deep like and dislike camps.  But it was a bit of a critical darling.  So, it seemed it was probably doing *something* of interest, even if it wasn't for me.

The movie does it's best to recreate a world that seems almost impossible in its brutality and viciousness, that believes in fates, and the best fate is to die (valiantly) in battle and be swept off to Valhalla by a Valkyrie.  It's a culture that sees sacking and pillaging as a vocation, and vengeance as a noble right.  And everyone is kind of aware that being a king also means being a target.  Kind of hard to believe these same people a few hundred years later would be living in countries now deemed to be some of the chillest places you can go.

But every scene in the film is cold, wet, or both.  This is the Northern European sea-faring people eking out a living in inhospitable climates kept at bay with stone houses and fires.

I will say - I am glad I had some actual Old Norse poetry under my belt.  The narrative is not pulled from anything in the Saga, I don't believe.  But given what the characters in the poems value and how they see the world deeply informed my understanding of what unspooled on screen - so, good timing, me.  

Eggers and writer Sjón were working to tell an ur-Hamlet (which really only hit me across the face when Nicole Kidman, playing the lead's mother calls him "Amleth" and the particular way she hit the name).  But, yes, it's a story about a prince whose father is killed by his uncle who then marries his mother and claims the kingdom and that prince being told by a phantom to finally deal with his need for vengeance, though it will doom everyone.  And this is not the Volsungs, but this is a different saga and based on an actual person in some way.

In this case, a 13-ish Amleth heads out to sea and allies himself with berserkers, becoming a fierce warrior (in the imposing form of a jacked Alexander Skarsgård).  He has not followed up on his plans for vengeance, but learning his mother and uncle have taken to Iceland after losing their kingdom to an invader (this stuff is like every five pages in the saga) he boards a slave ship headed to Iceland, posing as a slave. 

Oh, and did I mention he's given a vision by a witch in the form of a very spooky ghost-Norn-witch Björk?  Because that shit absolutely happens and I think all movies could use Björk showing up and doling out fates.  Heck, I wish Björk would show up and tell me what to do with myself.

Along the way he meets a fellow slave, this one a Slav in the form of Anya Taylor-Joy, who is clearly a wee bit witchy herself, and unnerving to her captors who can't quite their finger on why this woman sets them off.  

As mentioned, Kidman plays Amleth's mother, Queen Gudrún, and at first I thought "this is some odd casting.  Always happy to see Kidman, but...  why would she take this?."  And then she got her big scene, an equivalent of the Hamlet/ Gertrude scene, but fit for killer-take-all world of kings and chieftans living in stone houses in the shadow of a living volcano.  

Willem Defoe pops up as a Yorick-like character from Amleth's youth, but as much shaman as anything.  Ethan Hawke appears as the father who falls beneath his brother's sword, and Danish actor Claes Bang plays the uncle (very well, indeed, and I would hope this gets him more high profile roles in English-language film, although you may have seen him as Dracula in the Netflix limited series).  

I imagine the film is not for everyone.  This isn't a clear story of heroes and villains.  It's not clear Amleth is just or right, and an eye-for-an-eye truly leaves the whole world blind by the film's end.  He's a "hero" in the pre-20th Century version of the word - a challenged man capable of great and terrible deeds as he deals with fates doled out by gods larger than himself.  He's a near mindless, brutal killer when we catch up with him as an adult, murdering and destroying for want of any better way to work through the rage that defines him.  Life and death are fairly cheap commodities, and the virtues of this world barely align with our own.  The world of the film is cruel and literally barbaric.  

There's certainly CGI, color-grading, etc... employed here, but it's not a movie about the FX.  It relies on performance and story to move it along, and hats off to the DP who managed to light the thing in abysmal conditions and make it work.  So, it's  beautifully shot, well-performed and - if you give it room - moving.  But not in a "the real Northman was the friends we made along the way" sort of way.  It's much more of the hollowed out feeling you may have had at the end of Branagh's Hamlet.  

Anyway - I am not sure I recommend the film broadly, but I'm in the camp of "this is an  interesting movie, I liked it, and I'm glad it exists".  And I would be surprised if I didn't watch it again.

SO. So. In the Trainwreck Trio au Albatross is the sole survivor of Verlaine's killing of the Flags, yeah? So he has nightmares n stuff from That alongside survivor's guilt, and a feeling of inadequacy because he couldn't save Doc who was the one person he really did think he saved there, and also bc they teased him for not being very smart all the time so he's like "AUGH why do I get to survive but all the smarter people died?? I'm not worth this, god DAMMIT" <- Which feeds into his nightmares and terrors, really sending him into a silly doom spiral of The Horrors

BUT ALSO the only reason Albatross even SURVIVES Verlaine's onslaught is that in this au Wollstonecraft was on standby for repairs for Adam, so Adam calls her and is like "HEY I THINK VERLAINE JSUT FUCKING MAIMED ALL OF CHUUYAS FRIENDS GO?? CHECK ON THEM PLEASE AND THANK YOU" so she goes in there with a team and they re-stabilize Albatross literally by having to move the majority of his organs and internal functioning system into a metal vessel and then working circutry and robotics through him so he's functional enough to pass as a normal person (given that no one pays attention to or makes contact to any part of him lower than his chest because it is Metal you knock on that man's stomach you hear Clanging)

^ This is important because alongside the Terrors and Horrors of watching pretty much his entire found family get torn apart right in front of him, Albatross begins a spiral into a state of questioning his personal humanity, the thought of "I should be dead I should be dead I'm not dead because of these machines in me I'm part of a machine now am I a Person anymore??"

Which feeds into a self-isolation that was originally fueled by his survivor's guilt and probably PTSD, because now he's like "Oh. oh those are normal people I don't think i. i deserve that. ok. hm. ok i'm leaving now."

AND TO HIM. TO HIM?? CHUUYA AND DAZAI BOTH FALL UNDER THE CATEGORY OF HUMAN. HE LOOKS AT THEM AND HE'S LIKE "Yeah... there they are,,, just normal guys..... not exactly the normallest of guys but they're more people than I am i think,,"

So, you remember that one post about dead albatross symbolysm? The kin awakening one? Yeah so the frantic sobbing-so-hard-he-can't-breath breakdown I mentioned he probably had at the end of that? That's like, within the AU timeline, so it's like

>SB Events >The Horrors (Self-Isolation Version) >Breakdown/Tipping Point (Catalyst for him being able to Begin to return to regularly interacting with people, starting w Chuuya) >The Horrors Pt2 (Adjusting to everything) <- This is the stage where the drawing I did takes place in! He's too unstable to just be able to Ask to stay over but he figures if he can Sneak in then it's fine >Dark Era (He's a lot better at this point but also he has an episode about Dazai leaving because Losing People Doesn't Go Over Well With Him) >Current day (Epic Gamer moment)

ANYWAY so the Terrors and Horrors you want to go for for ur fic are probably feelings of like. Feeling lost and struggling to find closeness but also being so close and Needing that closeness to someone, an unhealthy dose of anxiety but specifically the anxiety you feel when it's mixed with depression so it's anxiety but somehow?? Slower. Like it's definitely Anxiety but mixing it with Depression made it's constancy thicker so it's less a "fidget nervous gotta run gotta go fear fear fear" feeling and more of a "the swamp is swallowing me and the branch is just out of reach but if i can just move a little to the side here jsut a little", if that ??? Makes sense??

TL:DR: Survivor's guilt and a feeling of displacement. Horrors and terrors of the Depression stage of grief mixed with Anxiety

IM BACK IN THE FUCKING BUILDING!!! (i played 2.5 hours of PQ today!!!)

some thoughts under the cut! today has been mostly exploring the 2nd spot/floor of the group date cafe and i'm like 79% done with it :3 (and i did the whole arrest the food bandit! quest today)

i really enjoyed returning to this game, the sidequests and character interactions i saw today were fun!

i was particularly endeared by naoto's enthusiasm and interest in aigis, i think it's really neat that he's just so curious about her! i mean.. who wouldn't be LMAO

there was also an event where aigis says:

"Including incidents within Tartarus, Junpei-san has now run into a total of 27 dead ends."

and i honestly thought that was the funniest shit ever??? and how they go on to talk about how aigis's data is piped to fuuka's database on her pc. i really enjoyed how this interaction highlights this aspect of aigis and fuuka's relationship, they definitely make a good team given fuuka's inclination toward technology.

i think that's what a running theme of persona spin-offs are to me- i just enjoy seeing other ways in which the different character dynamics between cast members can be expressed!

and i think that's why i really enjoyed doing the arrest the food bandit quest too- i'm very endeared by the dynamic between the velvet room family. i feel like from what i remember in mainline persona games, it's something that only really gets alluded to in the attendants' dialogue lines (as opposed to seeing the siblings actively talking to each other). i fucking love elizabeth she's great.

there's something about the attendant's curiosity toward life (and how much they have to learn) that i find very charming, but i also think that this aspect of them is great for like.. absurd situations that don't make me cringe. (this is a not-so vague at teddie, i find that atlus tends to focus on teddie's more grating traits aka Hitting On The Girls?? which im not fond of LOL)

the way theo was the culprit because he didn't understand that chie was speaking in hyperbole about yosuke being a dead man if something bad happened to the meat jelly is just. the funniest thing ever. so have an excerpt of my reaction/liveblog document from obsidian that has some transcriptions of the event:

like genuinely. i love the velvet room attendant family a lot. i think they just hit a lot of Appeal PointsTM for what i personally find interesting in fiction (characters learning their way through life who have wonder and curiosity for the world), so i've just been?? thriving off of any interactions they get from the sidequests??? it's great.

mechanics-wise i am very interested in seeing if there's stuff i still can unlock...? it's been kind of a pain in the ass to level up sub-personas specifically (i haven't finished the legendary medicine quest bc i needed to raise a guy up to get an agility binding spell... and now that i did raise the guy i just need to Use It). so i am assuming that there's a mechanic that compensates for the lack of arcana bonus exp LOL (and i'm pretty sure in P5R you could sacrifice ur personas to each other?? can we do that here? thanks.)

To preface—I’ve never played RE beyond playing bits of RE4 and then watching my brother beat it (I am a jumpy person with anxiety leave me be 😩). I don’t even consider myself an RE fan, I am in the most basic sense, an RE4 fan. So everything I say will likely get subverted because of some canon event I’m unaware of. ANYWAY.

I love RE4R because it’s overall a better narrative that lines up with current canon (I’m aware of some RE lore lol). It’s also just a better told story than RE4 in so many ways. So whatever I say will relate to remake.

Let’s say anything after the events of 4 have yet to happen, here’s the possible routes I’d take

The obvious—get plaga in different hands that’s not umbrella

The cliche—have Leon relapse with plaga

Not so cliche but pushing suspension of disbelief—have someone who is a carrier of plaga/asymptomatic carrier of plaga leave the island

Leon relapsing can be the most emotionally driven narrative if RE was no longer an action game. Like RE4, I imagine he’s struggling to control himself and it would be a race against time once again. Without the machinery that helped him cure it the first time, he’d kinda be be shit outta luck and it would be up to…idk Claire because she’s cool…or Ada because…it’s Ada lol to help Leon before he turns. Essentially, ur controlling anyone but Leon to solve it. But part of the gameplay is Leon surviving and being controlled and it gets slowly harder and harder but if u give into plaga controlling Leon gets easier. Then boom ur back in Spain, u learn that umbrella europe team left paper trails. Another branch is still researching plaga blah blah big bad is trying raise another cult bc cults are interesting. Marketing for this game would be painting Leon as an enemy like they did with Dante in DMC4 LOL.

Having another carrier is easy. Idk u learn that someone survived the village and is roaming some city as a refugee. Like idk maybe this person has plaga version 2.0 that can idk self breed and spread by contact. It’s pretty straight forward. Plot twist is that patient 0 didn’t know they were infected and no else did either. God that’s so cliche, you’d have to make a really good story for that to work. Either way they should end it by having a choice to kill the carrier/patient 0.

NOW IMAGINE IF LUIS SURVIVED (I do this everyday because I am unwell)—this would be very emotionally driven knowing damn well that Luis was involved with plaga (I think he’s involved with RE3 too which is cool). Idk he has another version of plaga because idk he was researching 2 different strains, and like it’s almost a war between two variants because Ada gave hers to someone. So like whatever Leon is fighting and shit and they’re like, the only way to beat this is with a stronger strain (and science). AND THEN, someone keeps dropping hints (it’s Ada cuz she be doing shit like that) like a trail to follow and then they’re like chasing this trail, but whomever is at the end realizes they’re being followed, so theyre hard to catch. Anyway like 3/4 into the game they catch them and it’s no one other than LUIS. And then drama ensues like “bitch I thought I were dead, wtf ur working on a different strain still??” and like u learn he’s still trying to make amends and has a new name and identity given by idk the US government because that’s just the kinda environment they’re in lol. Also Luis deserves to be petty, he should try and kill Ada. I would lol. She got the fuckin plaga anyway, sure I know it was not thru Luis but it’s SO UNFAIR he died and she got what she needed.

I stand by what I say about Luis that THEY CERTAINLY GAVE HIM A PHENOMENAL BACKGROUND FOR A SIDE CHARACTER. Idk his death was that more gratifying but also painful—that’s another essay I can write about

about Diavolo's "birthday" event

Feel free to skip if you aren't into obey me but I have to rant for a bit

So I freaking love Diavolo, right? He's been on my homescreen since the undateables became dateable, I had his paws and claws outfit unlocked within approximately thirty seconds of getting that card, I wrote diasim fanfic for obey me less than two weeks after I started playing the game last year. I was so excited for his birthday event because finally!!! An event where I get to spend loads of time with Dia!!! I have been stockpiling ap and energy drinks for ages so I could grind for his birthday UR, I was so ready for his birthday event!

Except it isn't really his birthday event, is it.

He's not even the UR for the event, Belphegor is (an especially interesting choice since Belphie, uhhhh, really doesn't like Diavolo. canonically. nice choice for an event ur, to give that spot to the character who least likes Diavolo instead of to Diavolo. in his birthday event.) and his birthday UR is in the gacha. So all those points and energy drinks I saved up to get Dia? Useless, I had to gamble to get him.

Additionally, he doesn't have higher pull rates in nightmare, so there's not even a higher chance of getting his chapter a UR, which has eluded me for months now - I had been stockpiling DV, too, to try and get it. I don't want to talk about how many times I pulled to get his birthday card instead, but it was a lot. Even more so since normally the birthday UR is free as long as you can grind for it.

This event still isn't a birthday event. It's a regular event in which Diavolo happens to have a birthday.

The emphasis through most of the event is how isolated Diavolo is, to the point he doesn't get to enjoy the celebrations that go on for his birthday. There's a sort of dreadful irony in that, given that he doesn't get a true birthday event, either. So instead of celebrating him, it feels like a pity event.

It's very frustrating as a Diavolo fan to have been so hyped up for this event and then you open the pop quiz and see this.

Yeah, Belphie is not the one I want to see on the pop quiz screen, I want to see Diavolo.

Frankly I haven't even finished the keyed part of the story - I'm so disappointed and dejected that I'm only partially through it. Why spend energy drinks on more keys when unlocking them won't help me grind for a Dia card? Why bother with the event, really? It's so upsetting to me because I was so hyped for his birthday and now I barely want to finish it.

And, as always, the demon form Dia being darker skinned than nondemonic Dia is very frustrating. What the hell, solmare.

"Not a lot of people would expect it," you listened on, "But Levi is actually a good guy, despite his character on screen." Mikasa laughed in the interview.

Causing some of her co-stars such as Eren, Armin, and Hange, to laugh along with her. Levi, who has seated two seats beside her only smiled slightly and rolled his eyes.

You continued to watch the interview as the cast goes through more and more questions. Some about to show, some about their personal lives, and some ridiculous hilarious ones.

"Excuse me, L/n?" Your assistant walked into your dressing room, a board on her hand, furiously writing away random things. "Yes?" you answered with a smile.

"You look incredible," she paused to look at you and smiled, "If you're ready we need to leave now." You hummed in acknowledgment and left for your car.

When you arrived at the gala, just like you had expected, the entrance was swamped with paparazzi. The camera shutter and flashes were everywhere you could see. Taking a deep breath to calm your nerves, your assistant opened the car door, revealing you to the masses.

You walked out, regal and classy in every step you took, something much expected of an actor like yourself. You smiled and posed to most of the photographers speaking out to gain your attention. In the process, you looked around, the red carpet had other A-list celebrities on it.

From actors such as yourself to singers to big corporate businessmen and women. It was truly a range of people to be around, though one group of people caught your eye.

You recognized them from one of your favorite shows, the dark-fantasy, apocalyptic fiction action show, Attack on Titan. You recognized almost all of them.

Mikasa and Eren hand in hand posing as a couple to the many photographers. Jean, Connie, and Sasha posing comedically. Of course, Annie, Bertholdt, and Reiner posed as well. Annie with a big smile on her face, something so out of character for the cold role she was given.

You smiled towards them, they were young actors whose rise to fame was incredible to watch. One actor left you breathless, Levi Ackerman, how he could look even more handsome than him on the big screen wowed you.

"Y/n L/n, look here please!" A photographer's voice immediately made you stop staring and pose once again.

What you failed to notice were Levi's eyes that trained towards you when your name reached his ears. He chuckled when he saw you, you were as amazing as he had imagined.

He joked around, making you chuckle, "I've been through that as well, my role in Game of Thrones was very aggressive as well." Levi opened his mouth to say something but was immediately cut off by Jean who ran to his side.

"It's funny how he acts almost just like his role," you joked around to Levi, "The casting director did really good at choosing the roles. Even Eren and Mikasa are a couple now."

The both of you continued your conversation, laughing here and there at a joke one of you had made. "Was it, awkward? To play a role with your sister? When you basically, have to yell at her sometimes?" You questioned Levi after he talked about how he and Mikasa somehow got a role in the same show.

"She would sometimes guilt trip me into buying her lunch the days of shooting when my character had to yell at her," he let a small smile crept into his expression. Leaving you completely flabbergasted at how much more beautiful he just looked.

The two of you stayed close to each other as the gala dragged on, and by some weird coincidence, you were actually seated at the same table. Thus leading you to talk more and more when there wasn't a performance done on the stage.

When the gala ended, you and Levi were still talking to one another. "You know, we're going to star in the same show very soon," you spoke, the both of you now waiting for your respective cars. To which Levi only nodded.

"We're playing as couples right?" he glanced towards you from his peripheral vision. Coughing slightly to muffle the laughter that almost escaped his lips when he saw you suddenly get flustered.

"I wasn't told that by my manager," you said quietly. He saw your car coming around the corner, so he turned you towards him.

1. the prophecy has something missing from it that Ralsei isn’t telling for some reason. It may be a plan or trick given to him.

2. Ralsei is NOT A GOOD PERSON / A VILLAIN. 1 Through chapter one and chapter 2 Ralsei explains to you on how to use controls that Susie does not understand. “If you need help use Z!” Susie: “Who’s Z?!”. 2 Ralsei walks around in the second chapter with hands behind his back. 3 If I remember clearly, Ralsei is trying to be like someone else as he said in the boat ride with you when talking about Suzy and friendship “Maybe I should try being myself more than another person”. This might be hinting he is trying to be like Asriel. 4 RALSEI DOES NOT TURN TO STONE AS THE OTHER DARKNERS DO. This is a BIG red flag to me that Ralsei is able to be in other worlds like the knight is able to be. I have a feeling they are working together but i don’t know what or why.

3. Something happened to the humans and kris near the red door. Where are the humans? Why doesn’t kris like to be near the door? At first i thought it might be a secret door leading to the knights castle but it’s clear to me that that might not be the case.

5. The dark world only works on children. Which is why a lot of the teenagers are being targeted (rooms of everyone’s bed). (I’m confused about Asriel’s room as his room is there but it’s empty). This might be because kids are easily manipulated. “You might think this world is a dream come true. but you’re WRONG” quote lol. This world is encouraging the children to stay in the dark world for some unknown reason. To keep coming back? to keep sealing the fountains? why do they want to people to stay? What do they plan on doing to kids who’ve come to stay?

6. At first I thought of the knight to be either 2 people. You or Gaster. But now i’ve come with more evidence but with more people. 1 I thought you might be the angel and this is your heaven, after thinking about it, the kids of this world tend to think of this world as “heaven”, so maybe that may not be it, so you being the knight might be true, but if thats the case… who did the king and queen talk to? 2 Kris is the knight, at the end they opened something weird in the middle of their living room that kind of looked like a fountain, this adds to more confusion though. 3 Gaster, Gaster has been a really big thing throughout this whole UNDERTALE SERIES. It wouldn’t be too surprising due to all the hints and..uh..egg.. that proves the relation to gaster. 4 Ralsei or Asriel, as i was saying, ralsei or asriel might be the knight but i still need more proof for this. 5 Papyrus, papyrus is the only character that has no dialog or show up through the whole game, not only that, he’s just a mystery is general, also the game has a LOT to do with puzzles, also the villains are all SMILING BLUE FIGURES WITH HUMOR, like a certain skeleton brother, if that’s not the case, i’m afraid papyrus is being lured or dragged into the dark world by the knight, like an assistant, or another kid to be manipulated into getting everything he desired. my theory? possession, just like kris, why else has he not shown up at all? does the “great papyrus” not want to be popular or have friendship? 6 Sans, Sans has also been a mystery throughout the whole undertale series, and the doors in the dark world prove more to his knight theory. His character is cartoony and confusing (just look at his story fruit thing, putting ur hand in the containers reaches lower than logic). Also in the end, the smile on the television is an EXACT replica of his smile. If that’s the case, he might be using pap for his unknown plan.

7. The “Festival” is a disaster/set up. something bad WILL happen during that event and the the dark and light world will fuse and tear the worlds apart. The children of the town and darkners a will put a stop to it. Azzy will be part of this, poor azzy lol. Coming home from college only to not get a break.

8. Bps girlfriend is a scam, sorry dude

9. Kris has a plan for something unknown. I believe Kris is a good kid, but with bad intentions. Plus, if you were constantly being controlled by an unknown figure you would react kind of like Kris, Right??

10. The internet being down is something bigger, i have a feeling it is.

11. Asgore is fruity

12. Undertale charcters will have a part of this (they might remember their old game and place which is how they would get their magic????).

13. Kris is afraid of humans, (no evidence beside the door theory and the fact kris refusing to look at pictures of other humans)

14. Sans and Asgore’s relationship is not the same as undertale. Sans seems dislike Asgore in this world. This could mean sans doesn’t actually know anything about the past game nor who the player is (this losens the knight theory), he MAY have some general knowledge though!

15. Catti and Jonkington will be the next chapters, then snowy and mk, then…uh…temmie and egg? then the knight.

16. Someone is going to die, i don’t know who but my bets on Burdly. WHICH IS SCARY BECAUSE I DONT WANT HIM TO DIE BUT I FEEL LIKE HE WILL….or kris. Update: due to some new information this theory is cancelled…

18. Nothing matters theory. Had this theory ever since Chapter 1. This story will be like Undertale. Everyone’s memories and lives will be forgotten or erased. This world is a test, a program to see how the player handles this world. Once the game is completed the creator of the program will throw this piece away. This game is just the beginning of something far more than undertale or deltarune. Nothing matters, your choices, your lives, your accomplishments, your friends, will be discarded forever.

19. Kris is a fusion between two characters, frisk and chara. theory this will play better in the real program??? or kris is just kris and the kfc will be a thing in the other program lol.

okie, so some tips!

so, the chats that pop up usually don’t really pertain to the main story anyway & are just for fun most of the time. I believe most chats are time-based, so you likely won’t be getting chats that are past your current place in the main story unless a certain amount of time has past! so, you can read them no problem most of the time since they’re mostly just for fun fillers and such!

in terms of winning dance battles in order to get to the next main story part, your cards are EXTREMELY important!

you can acquire cards from gacha pulls in Nightmare (as you likely already know) and also by combining card pieces that you obtain from “pop quizzes” which are essentially special events that are available for a certain timeframe.

(If you haven’t noticed, parts of the story & dance battles are called “lessons” & events are called “pop quizzes” since it’s supposed to be that we are attending RAD and doing schoolwork there.)

From highest level to lowest in terms of card rarity (ie. power potential) is UR+/UR, SSR, SR, R, & then N (anything below SSR doesn’t matter in terms of using for dance battles BUT some of them have wallpapers, outfits, & chats that you can unlock in “Devil Tree” which I will get to later!

Basically, you should prioritize leveling up your highest power potential cards first! I recommend having a strong enough card in each sin category since each dance battle varies in what sin they focus on (which you can see in the top right corner of each dance battle panel), which is Red: Gluttony, Blue: Pride, Yellow: Greed, Green: Wrath, Pink: Lust, Orange: Envy, & Purple: Sloth. It also helps to have two strong cards for each sin but with different characters on them since then they both can be used in the dance battle that wants that sin, but that’s more for when you already have strong cards & have the time to level up more. It also may help leveling up your cards with the best special skills! Any special skill that bans the opponent’s skills are extremely helpful, but honestly just having high level cards is the most important.

In order to continuously keep leveling your cards, you will need to unlock places in Devil Tree that you do so by using Grimm (easy obtainable through clearing lessons you’ve already obtained 2 or 3 stars on by clicking the Clear x5 button, though note that this uses AP, or through “:D Jobs”) and also items used to strengthen cards (they vary, but are usually obtainable through specific lessons that give those specific items or during Levi’s Otaku Boot Camp that comes around every once & a while to help with getting these items. it will tell you if you have the correct amount to unlock spaces in Devil Tree & if you don’t then it will show you specific lessons that give you those items).

Memory cards are also really important (but your main cards should be your priority nonetheless). You can obtain memory cards through “Chapter M” in “Nightmare” and they essentially work the same as cards.

There are also items called “glow sticks” that help you win dance battles that you buy from “Akuzon” with Devil Points. They’re extremely helpful, especially once you hit about lesson 30. I, personally, always only buy rainbow ones since they strengthen your cards much more than the other colors and pertain to everyone, even though they cost more it’s worth it in terms of strengthening.

During dance battles, you’ll see bars under your characters (on the ride side) that pertain to when their special attacks are ready. I recommend clicking them as soon as they are ready, so there is more time for the bar to regenerate & for them to be able to use their special attacks again.

so, yeah! that should be the basics & what is the overall priority of obey me! I hope it helped & promise you’ll get the hang of it lickety-split!

here are some actual “tip-tips” that are really helpful to know: (these are actually really helpful)

you are essentially given a free 18 devil points EVERY DAY by completing 7 of your daily to-dos, which are very easy to complete! I recommend doing it everyday bc it really adds up! (the daily to-dos refresh at 11 pm)

If you’re struggling with not having enough AP, then there is a deal that saves Devil Points that available once daily. Once depleting your AP to below 10 I believe, they will offer you 600 AP & some Grimm for only about 10 Devil Points. TAKE IT! It’s a wayyy better deal than manually buying AP with Devil Points.

Similar to the last tip, you can save money on rainbow glow sticks once every day. Simply lose a dance battle (making sure you have at least 20 Devil points) and they will offer a deal for 5 rainbow glow sticks, some Grimm, & some AP all for just 20 Devil points! mind you, one rainbow glow stick from Akuzon is 6 Devil points so do the math.

You’re smiley face character doesn’t ALWAYS dictate if you’re going to win the dance battle or not. The smiley face can be blue & crying & you can still win as long as you look at your opponents’ special skills & your total strength is only a few thousand points below that of the opponents. I recommend your smiley face character to be smiley when the opponents have any stun, paralyze, or confusion special skill that keeps your characters from being able to use their special attack. You can gauge how many glow sticks or leveling up you need by just going into the dance battle with either nothing or a few non-rainbow glow sticks equipped & seeing how far away you are from the line/the opponents special attack pattern.

Since the opponents’ special attacks pattern usually changes with every attempt at a dance battle, some of their patterns may be more advantageous to you than the others. If you have rainbow glow sticks equipped & believe you can win by trying again, simply close out of the game completely and reopen it. It will ask if you want to resume where you left off which you will click “resume” to & then it will restart the battle with your glow sticks still intact. This had saved me so many times. ESPECIALLY LESSON 4O’s BOSS BATTLE LEGIT JUST KEEP DOING IT OVER & OVER & YOULL EVENTUALLY GET IT!!

In terms of the fun customization part of Obey Me like the profile pics, Majolish outfits & wallpapers, special chats, etc. I found it extremely helpful to just go through Majolish & click on the item you want. It will tell you the card you can get it from & whether you have it or not!

Oh, & choosing the characters with sparkles around them for :D Jobs gives more of a chance of special drops!

Make sure to make a obey me save password for if you ever delete the app/get a new phone! They also reward you with 30 Devil Points if you do so, so there’s rly no point not to.

For surprise guest combos, you either memorize them or find them on google. But I can give you the main ones here off the top of my head:

Any of the brothers if they ask for a high-five EXCEPT FOR LUCIFER, SATAN, & BEEL: high-five, Head-rub, Head-rub

If Lucifer or Satan ask for a high-five: high-five, YOUR right/THEIR left shoulder TAP, hand tap (they usually have it on top of their chest)

If Beel asks for a high-five: high-five, chest-rub, chest-rub

Mammon if he says “muahahaha”: Head-rub, YOUR right/HIS LEFT arm rub, face-rub

Lucifer if you get 3 stars but he doesn’t ask for a high-five: lip-rub, Head-tap, Hand-tap

which is understandable considering the amount of URs he has 

i could probably see his brothers fight each other to get his account when he thinks about giving it away

Lowkey does not know how to play for a while but does log into the game just to make sure he gets his free pulls

His knowledge of the games grows EXPONENTIALLY and by the end of the first week

he’a asking Lucifer to add him, what cards he has, should he invest in this event or not

Barbatos somehow ends up being as equally invested as Levi but the only way any of them can tell is because he revealed himself to be top 10 at one event

Adores every UR card of you and asks Lucifer if he should just sign up and be VIP

Does get extremely lucky at times

personally i dont know if i can honestly recommend gintama to anyone who has not seen it. It's the type of anime where you need to develop an acquired taste for it. To recommend this show to anyone, you probably need to be aware of what your recomendee wants in an anime. I know that Gintama is ultimately a gag/parody anime, however the way people (and I) hype it often just focus on the serious parts which can make the wrong impression on the uninitiated bystander. ;^_^

Gintama problems:

pacing is questionable. 368 episodes + 8 specials and like only 30% is actual story. Good luck sacrificing ur brain and ur limited free time. And while it was rewarding to find parallels/connections between comedy and serious arcs, it's also easy to get annoyed by it.

the first chapters/episodes were weak plotline-wise. Like I can still remember me asking myself just where the story was going. If it weren't for the episode guide that I followed constantly reminding to treat it not as something one should binge-watch but rather smth someone watches once a week, i would have given up.

serious arcs are followed by too many comedic arcs.

and while the comedy is unique, it's not for the impatient.

It's best to watch it if you've spent a lifetime exposed to jp anime and media or at least grew up exposed to other shonen jump titles (especially older ones or gintama contemporaries.)

Also people need to be warned of the abundance of green jokes. It's something one should watch with a super open mind.

Don't even get me started on every ____-phobic issue/trope one encounters along the way.

There's also bullsht plot armor for all the Joui4 and some other characters and places.

not to mentions tons of deus ex machina events which make no darn sense.

Anime producers extended manga chapter content by a significant margin. One must be careful of what to consider as strictly canon. It is fascinating though.

If I didn't watch the filipino dub of the anime for the early episodes I wouldn't have been able to get through them tbh. It was great that the filipino dub captured the essence of the characters/comedy (with some localization ofc).

I admit I did skip A lot of comedy arcs because 1.) i got bored while watching 2.) offensive 3.) felt like a waste of time. Reading in the manga those arcs I skipped was how I fixed the holes in my Gintama lore.

People would argue that Gintoki is a one-of-a-kind MC. While I agree that his backstory was interesting, the way the multiple endings of the show still revolved around him/yorozuya ultimately saving the world every time ticked me off. That was very shonen jump of sorachi tbh. For as much as he tried to deviate from the common SJ editoral tropes, he still subscribed to making his MC save the world all the time. I should have been used to the formula by now but it made GIntoki/Yorozuya kinda boring to me. For all the hype it kinda felt short on that aspect.

It's ultimately my fault for having too many expectations for it. I had been used to watching seinen for more than 10 years after all.

Things I found amazing about Gintama

almost accurate portrayal of war. Like really, I cannot stress this enough. Espionage, Sabotage, Diplomacy, rebellions, leaders rounding up remnants of rebellious groups, pillaging, siege warfare, etc. It's great. If the Amanto didn't have such disorganized and melee-type fighting style it would have been perfect (and not even gintoki would have stood a chance lol)

portrayal of trauma

family themes, taking care of kids and teenagers

Excellent manzai routines.

some characters with period-accurate attitudes

strong ladies (im conflicted on this coz i dont like most of their fighting styles and portrayals)

some characters have really good writing embedded throughout the narrative.

It ended well. I'm thankful I watched it after it ended.

I guess this was my proper review of Gintama after 2 months watching/studying the show. If anyone reading this is offended by my complaints, remember that most complaints are born out of love. I did enjoy Gintama, and because I enjoyed it, I naturally want to talk about it's strengths and weaknesses. xD
