I’ve not been great at keeping up with this drawing challenge. This week has been really busy (we’re moving house soon), but here are the next four prompts! Same as last time, they’re only sketches, but I definitely want to add colour to some of them.
Day 3’s prompt was a fairy, so I went full Brian Froud on this one. I love how he distorts different body parts in his work, and combines them with loads of symbolism. This fairy is definitely a lord (or lady maybe? I don’t think they really have a gender). I also just love drawing long deer leggies, so satisfying.
Tumblr media
Goddess was the challenge for day 4. I’m not sure about this sketch - she’s a goddess of the hearth a la Hestia, and the cat elements are taken from how cats love sitting by the fire. I think she could really do with a redesign, making her basket of logs on her back more prominent. I am happy with her pose though, I’m not great at stuff like that. I think she looks quite a bit like The Star from The Arcana (it’s a great game on mobile go and play it), and I like to think of this goddess like a mix between her and the Norse goddess Freyja.
Tumblr media
Next prompt was ‘Merfolk’. I like the older depictions of mermaids as fully half and half creatures with a clear divide, but more modern mermaids (see Harry Potter and even Narnia films I think) are easier to draw (for me, anyway) and more natural. This merman was not based on any fish really, more concepts of how the sea is dangerous. (This is just getting out of using a reference, I know, but I just want to draw, not find the perfect image to copy from)
Tumblr media
Finally, todays prompt was ‘Zombie’. Zombies I’ve never really liked, mostly because they often turn up in a modern setting, and lots of tropes are predictable nowadays (Shaun of the dead is great though, love that). Also swords are better than guns. So a zombie dog. I could be so much more original, but that’s what I felt like. Also his anatomy is defo kinda dodgy. He’s not much of a character though. I may improve him later
Tumblr media
Sorry about the long post and the long gap with nothing. It’s the weekend next though, so I’ll probably get more done with less pauses soon
The prompt list is on the last post, thanks to whoever made it

shout out to this scene from the last Olympian that’s been kicking around my brain since 2013
image description under the cut
Start ID.
Image 1: a digital illustration of Percy Jackson holding Pandora’s jar. Inside the jar is the spirit of hope, emitting a glow onto Percy’s face. Percy is looking at the spirit and smiling tenderly. Percy has tan skin and black hair, with a grey streak. Standing protectively over Percy and the jar is Hestia, smiling down on them.
Image 2: A close up on Elpis, the Spirit of Hope, inside Pandora’s jar.
Image 3: A close up on Percy’s face.
Image 4: A close up on Hestia’s face.
Image 5: An excerpt from The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan. The last three lines are highlighted. The excerpt reads:
“I picked up Pandora's jar. The spirit of Hope fluttered inside, trying to warm the cold container.
"Hestia," I said, "I give this to you as an offering."
The goddess tilted her head. "I am the least of the gods. Why would you trust me with this?"
"You're the last Olympian," I said. "And the most important."
"And why is that, Percy Jackson?"
"Because Hope survives best at the hearth," I said. "Guard it for me, and I won't be tempted to give up again."
The goddess smiled. She took the jar in her hands and it began to glow. The hearth fire burned a little brighter.
"Well done, Percy Jackson," she said. "May the gods bless you.”
End ID.

Hob: I've been wondering... If Desire always meddles in Dream's affairs, why have they never set their sights on me? Not that I want that ofcourse! But surely as a simple human I'm an easy target?
Death: Oh I asked a boon off an old friend.
Hob: A boon?
Death: All I had to do was promise you'd turn up on June 7th, every hundred years. Drink wine and make merry by the hearth light and toast to the simple human pleasures it brings ... And in return she'd keep you hidden from the gaze of my sibling.
Hob: Wait, but I thought our first meeting was purely happenstance! You planned the whole thing! Me.. Him! Putting the idea in his head! Right down to the day?!
Death: Well it had to be June the 7th, start of Vestalia, the festival of the Goddess Vesta Goddess of Hearth and Home. You offer her a toast of sweet wines by her sacred flame, and she in turn shares with you her unique godly gift. To not be maliciously bent or ensnared by Venus...Or in our case, Desire.
Hob: Wait, Vesta!...As in...
Death: The Vestal Virgins. Yes! You've been her first male, and may I add, longest serving priestess she's ever had.
Hob: But, but... I'm not..
Death: Oh she knows. She says your pure, reverent affection and quite frankly astounding patience for my... (And this is a direct quote) 'Brooding donkey' of a brother has been virtue enough. Don't tell Dream she knows though. She's had this whole epic, jump scare/divine matriarchal dress down planned since 1689...For the day he finally pulls his head out of his posterior and 'deflowers' you. Something about making an honest vestal out of you and demanding a June wedding in her honour. We can't wait to see his face!!
Hob: (Chocking on his drink)

Prayers•
Historical-
Holy Queen of Sanctity, we hymn you, Hestia, whose abiding realm is Olympus and the middle point of earth and the Delphic laurel tree! You dance around Apollo’s towering temple rejoicing both in the tripod’s mantic voices and when Apollo sounds the seven strings of his golden phorminx and, with you, sings the praises of the feasting gods. We salute you, daughter of Kronos and Rhea, who alone brings firelight to the sacred altars of the gods; Hestia, reward our prayer, grant wealth obtained in honesty; then we shall always, dance around your glistening throne.
For the lost -
Blessed Hestia, the first and the last, and the always flame. May your light burn bright and strong, May your prayers be those of respect and love, May you guide the lost, And give to those who have nothing. I give thanks to you, Hestia, for all that you have done And continue to do.
For people with intrusive thoughts -
I ask Hestia, the kind goddess, to help those who feel down. May they find comfort and peace inside of their homes and inside their own minds. Protect them for their destructive thoughts, and be the safe place they need so much
A prayer for homeles—
In Hestia’s name, may you always have a home and a roof over your head. May you always be comfortable and warm with a full belly. May you always be in good spirits and good company, never knowing the pervading loneliness that envelopes the soul.
Morning
Blessed Hestia, Fill this home with your light and bounty, As the day fills it with golden sunshine.
Evening
Glorious Hestia, Let your hearth fire warm this house, As night draws her shadowed cloak over it now.
Blessings of the kitchen-
Hestia bless my little kitchen, I love it’s every nook And bless me as I do my work, Wash pots and pans and cook. May the meals that I prepare, Be seasoned from above, With thy blessings and thy grace, But most of all thy love

Ok, this is semi-crack but if Hoyo decided to make the bad guys Russian I'm allowed to invoke Slavic symbolism.
In East Slavic cultures the hearth used to be associated with meanings you normally attach to the netherworld.
(no one really thinks like this anymore, of course, and most city dwellers never encounter a proper hearth in their lives, but it's still there in fairy tale imagery and sometimes in language and the metaphors we use for things)
I actually don't know what the correct translation is. Oven? Fireplace? The thing is HUGE, incredibly ugly and also building one is an art (it's supposed to distribute heat in a very specific way). We do not spread this symbolism to Western fireplaces or fire in general.
It's a bit chthonic and associated with everything pagan and unclean (ritually and literally. the soot).
Very far from the cozy "sitting near a fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate", it's a place where Real Stuff Happens and most real stuff in this world is messy and unpleasant.
But also only because of it a home can be called a home. It's the heart of the house.
In superstitions it's home to a friendly fae househelper (the little dude lives behind it) and in fairy tales it's sometimes an entry point for minor demons (I don't remember if they get through the chimney or through the fire itself).
Then in other fairy tales there's Baba Yaga, The Evil Witch, who is also probably an aspect of a forgotten goddess of death (as in many other places, Christianity weeded out Slavic myths to the point of near disappearance and fairy tales were a form in which some of those survived). This lovely lady occasionaly cooks adventurers in the oven/hearth as a part of their rebirth process. Occasionally she just cooks and eats them. Folks with good work ethics are usually safe (in most tales they offer to perform some work for her in exchange for help or simply for not being eaten).
Baba Yaga, as far as I know, is somewhat recognized by the English-speaking pagan community, they interpret her as yet another name for the Crone face of the Triple Goddess (the archetype on which Hoyo likely relied when writing the Moon Sisters).
(do you see the fire and moon connection now?)
I'm surprised how well it fits a lot of Arle's themes. A fire that is otherwoldly and demonic and associated with rebirth and an almost-forgotten goddess of death and moon, but also it's just fire in a hearth, something to warm your house with.
This was probably not Hoyo authors' thought process and they just thought of rebirth, destruction and tamed fire.
But the author is dead and the hearth means what it means, and if you dig into humans' relationship with fire long enough you end with this sort of symbolism anyway, so I declare this angle valid.

As I sit on the cold, hard floor of an apartment littered with boxes and bags and bits of lives that are slowly being melded together, I glance around at the clutter and chaos and find a sense of comfort.
Hestia, Eternal Flame of Olympus, I see you there amongst the moving boxes and the overflowing bags. I feel your presence in the first cup of hot tea brewed in a new kitchen. I hear your gentle voice ringing though the early morning silence as I prep for a day of unpacking and moving and organizing.
From honey in my tea to cinnamon on my toast and a candle softly flickering in the kitchen, I feel your warmth flowing into this small space that my family and I are turning into a home and I am overcome with love and thankfulness.
Hestia, Maiden of Fire, who's oil slicked hair radiates warmth and gentleness, it is an honor to be your child and I am ever grateful to feel your presence and know that you are guiding me. Light in the darkness, Keeper of the Flame, First and Last; Ember that burns ever bright..thank you for being in my life

greek mythology: hestia
hestia is the virgin goddess of the hearth and the home. as the goddess of the family hearth she also presided over the cooking of bread and the preparation of the family meal. hestia was also the goddess of the sacrificial flame and received a share of every sacrifice to the gods. the cooking of the communal feast of sacrificial meat was naturally a part of her domain.
