If I had a nickel for every time there was an R rated 80s movie with a female character named Veronica with brown curly hair who was dating and had sex with this one guy who turned out to be the worst person she could possibly fall in love with and he hurts a lot of people then dies at the end of the movie leaving her distraught, I'd have 2 nickels.

It's not a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

In defense of Heathers the Musical

seems like a good chunk of the fandom these days is “love the movie, hate the musical” in a way that feels reactionary to me… to each their own!

But there’s one critique I’d like to push back on: ie JD’s slight rewrite to be more sympathetic is bad.

The movie’s satire demands a flat / deadpan tone. That’s how you get jokes like JD shooting a radio and Veronica, (after the murders of Heather/Ram/Kurt) says matter-of-factly, “that’s it, we’re breaking up.” 

But that kind of flat tone can’t carry a full musical, not with the heightened emotion you expect from one. Nobody goes to hear a full musical of tonal deadpan singing. 

Meanwhile, I’m convinced that making JD sympathetic was less about JD’s characterization and more about the audience’s reaction to Veronica, specifically her choice to stay with him after the murder of 3 people. They Should Be Over at this point; the audience is screaming for Veronica to leave, and she should. 

By making JD sympathetic and having Veronica go through a brief (and ultimately failed) I Can Fix Him phase, the audience is more inclined to stick around with Veronica on her journey. “Seventeen” heightens the emotion and the stakes of Veronica’s plight, reinforces “Meant to be Yours” as a domestic violence situation, and actually reinforces her final choice to fight JD in the end. It’s one of those “you need a good villain in order to make the hero great” storytelling techniques. 

And while we’re here, it’s frankly a much better use of runtime than Veronica’s extended dream sequence of Duke’s murder and funeral.

It was pretty dark that it was revealed that Rick didn't bother entering the Fear Hole to save Morty in the first place, but the fact that Rick went back to it after being told Diane was in there, and not only refused to go into it, but pinned Morty's photo to the wall (a photo he now keeps in his wallet) shows that Rick *is* moving on and healing from her death. His family here and now are what matter.

the consequences of a glitch in time are so funny to me because can you imagine being dash baxter or something and you glance over between shots to see regular danny, girl danny, and mean rich danny pulling up to the function
