i can definitely give you some recs for wlw shows, although i need to give two little disclaimers first:

i actually know of only one european wlw show, so i hope it's okay if i expanded this list to include western shows in general ;;;;;;;;

networks and streaming platforms are my mortal enemies because they love cancelling sapphic shows after one or two seasons (AND FUCK THEM ALL FOR THAT TBH), but if i didn't put those series on the list, this would be very short and i also think we would be missing out on some great television, so im adding their status to let you know what to expect before getting into it

OKAY AND NOW WITHOUT FURTHER ADO LET'S GET INTO IT

a league of their own (comedy drama - 1 season - cancelled)

based on the 1992 film of the same name with new characters and storylines, the series, set in 1943, is about the formation of the rockford peaches, a women's team in the nascent all-american girls professional baseball league.

one of my favorites on this list and im so upset it got cancelled AMAZON PRIME YOU WILL PAY FOR YOUR CRIMES

anne+ (drama - 2 seasons + a movie - complete)

the one actual european wlw show of the list, this is a dutch drama series that follows the main character, anne, as she tries to navigate her early twenties as a young lesbian. upon bumping into her ex-girlfriend one day, anne reflects on how her past relationships have contributed to who she has become.

honestly for being from a smaller indie production this is such a relatable, engaging, and well-done series, i definitely recommend it!!!!

dickinson (historical comedy drama - 3 seasons - complete)

based on the life of emily dickinson, the series focuses on her relationships with her family, her friends, her society, and on her long-term romantic relationship with her childhood best friend and sister in law, sue.

another big favorite of mine, it's fun, wild, has an unique modern twist, and both hailee steinfeld and ella hunt are incredible

first kill (fantasy drama - 1 season - cancelled)

the series focus on the relationship between teenage vampire juliette fairmont, who needs to make her first kill in order to enter adulthood and take her place among her powerful family of legacy vampires, and calliope burns, who belongs to a monster-hunting family and needs to slay her first monster in order to gain her family's approval and officially become a hunter herself.

look, i know there are a lot of mixed reviews on this show, but personally i enjoyed it a lot. it's good, campy fun, and a breath of fresh air from the hetero love stories that pervade the genre

gentleman jack (historical drama - 2 seasons - cancelled)

based on the collected diaries of anne lister, which contain over four million words and are written in secret code, documenting a lifetime of lesbian relationships. the series starts in 1832, when anne leaves hastings brokenhearted and heads to halifax, to restore her uncle's estate that she has inherited. while restoring the estate, she finds that the family land has a coal mine that it's being stolen by two brothers and develops a relationship with a woman named ann walker.

genuinely SO UPSET about this one being cancelled, it was such a gorgeous show with the most delightful english humor and complex relationships WHY PEOPLE CAN'T RECOGNIZE QUALITY TELEVISION

gypsy (psychological thriller - 1 season - cancelled)

the series follows jean holloway, a therapist who seems to have it all, but who secretly obsesses over the people her patients talk about in their sessions. this leads her to seek out sydney, one of her patient's ex-girlfriend, with whom she starts developing a romantic relationship under a secret identity.

i wasn't sure whether to rec this or not because i have very mixed feelings about it like the concept is very intriguing to me but the execution wasn't the best imho. it's still a solid show tho, and naomi watts is. well, naomi watts

the haunting of bly manor (horror - 1 series - complete)

loosely based on the novella the turn of the screw by henry james, the series follows dani clayton, a young american woman hired as an au pair for the children of the wealthy wingrave family in england. after arriving at the bly estate, she begins to see apparitions that proceed to haunt the premises.

i personally LOVE all of mike flanagan's series, and this one is no exception, however (unpopular opinion) i do find the second half of it kinda lacking. it's still a fantastic show tho, and i adore victoria pedretti

killing eve (thriller - 4 seasons - complete [but at what cost])

the series follows eve polastri, a british intelligence investigator tasked with capturing an assassin named villanelle. as the chase progresses, the two develop a mutual obsession.

once again i wasn't sure whether to rec this or not because while the first two seasons of this show are honestly some of my all time favorite, and the third season is still acceptable, the last one is honestly one of the biggest disappointment i've ever experienced in television. still, i think it's a staple of wlw shows in the last decade so i had to include it

warrior nun (fantasy drama - 2 seasons - cancelled, but we should be getting a revival as a trilogy of feature films. hopefully)

the story follows ava silva, a a 19-year-old orphan who wakes up in a morgue with a new lease on life and a divine artifact embedded in her back. she discovers she is now part of the ancient order of the cruciform sword that has been tasked with fighting demons on earth, and powerful forces representing both heaven and hell want to find and control her.

when i tell you i was so skeptical when i started this show but it's honestly SO GOOD, it really has it all: talented cast, beautifully-written three-dimensional characters and relationships of all varieties, gorgeous cinematography, amazing fight scene choreography.......THEY BETTER DELIVER THOSE MOVIES OR IM GONNA BE SO UPSET

AND NOW LET ME ADD SOME SHOWS WITH WLW RELATIONSHIPS IN A BIGGER ENSEMBLE CAST

sense8 (scifi drama - 2 seasons - complete)

the story follows eight strangers as they discover that they form a cluster of "sensates": human beings who are mentally and emotionally linked, can sense and communicate with one another, and can share their knowledge, language and skills.

i don't think i could say something about this show that hasn't already been said tbh. it's wonderfully queer and explores issues related to identity, sexuality, gender, and politics. it's honestly a must watch.

the wilds (drama - 2 seasons - cancelled)

the series revolves around a group of teenage girls who are left stranded on a deserted island after their plane crashes on the way to the dawn of eve program, a young women's empowerment retreat. while the girls try to survive, they are unaware that they're actually the subjects of a social experiment.

AMAZON PRIME YOU WILL PAY FOR YOUR CRIMES PT. 2 STOP CANCELLING MY FAVORITE SHOWS 😭

yellowjackets (horror - 2 seasons - on going)

in 1996, a new jersey high school girls' soccer team travels to seattle for a national tournament. while flying over canada, their plane crashes deep in the wilderness, and the surviving team members are left stranded for nineteen months. the series follows both their attempts to stay alive in 1996 and the lives of the survivors 25 years later, in 2021, as the events of their ordeal continue to affect them many years after their rescue.

i. freaking. LOVE. this show!!!!!!!! but it also comes with a mile long list of trigger warnings, including cannibalism, SA, abuse, animal killing, etc. maybe it's silly to point this out considering the genre of the show, but still. just be safe if you do decide to watch it!!!!!!

and this is pretty much it!!!! this is obviously not a comprehensive list, im aware i left out some popular shows and other ones that feature sapphic relationships between side characters, but these are my personal favorites and they also feel like the series where the wlw part of the story is fairly front and center, at least imho ;;;;;;;;

Kylian goes on social media and is once again faced with an onslaught of critics who can’t seem to stop themselves from portraying him as an overrated evil money-hungry brat. He decides the best remedy is some alone time at the beach when he spots the fiery foreigner who seems to possess the ability to lift his mood without even lifting a finger.

Hello, my lovelies, long time no see. Do you like Ishani? What do you think of her in general? Well, to me she's… an interesting character. I'd like to know more about her, but unfortunately, that's not the case. We can only speculate…but we'll never know what really was :( My headcanons:

Ishani was born on May 28th, 1989, in Faridabad, Haryana.

Ishani's parents are Riya Kakkar and Krishan Kakkar. They own a henna company. They are conservatives…

Riya and Krishan have 6 children. Ishani is the third oldest, the middle child. She has an older sister Ayana Kakkar (born in 1988) and an older brother Jai Kakkar (born in 1986). And, of course, she has younger siblings. Two sisters, Parvati (1991) and Prisha (1993), and brother Raj Kakkar (1995). Living in a large family is not easy, especially when you are the middle child.

Her family is quite well-to-do, so she went to one of the best schools in Faridabad. She graduated with A's, but she had no choice, her parents were so demanding.

At the age of 17, Ishani enrolled in flight school. She likes flying all her life. Her parents were against it, their main argument being that it’s "not a woman's profession”. This led to a huge quarrel, and to Ishani being out of touch with her family for a so long time.

At the age of about 19 Ishani started racing.

Ishani is a bisexual woman (just like me…). She had a relationship experience with a girl when she was in her early 20s. But she does have more experience with men, some part of it is contentedly sad…

Her family is Hinduists, but after a quarrel with her parents, Ishani began to realize that she didn't need all that religious stuff and generally…she doesn't believe in all that stuff. Now she is an atheist (I’m also an atheist…).

She had been Ripslinger's girlfriend for some time. Not that she had any special feelings for him. She had achieved a lot without him. Before her relationship with Rip, she became a Pan-Asian champion, etc. But she agreed to a relationship with Rip because of her career…did she doubt herself? Anyway, she can achieve everything on her own.

But later, thanks to Dusty, she made the right conclusions and ended any relationship with Ripslinger. Ripslinger is still angry with her and thinks Ishani is a traitor.

Chapter 5 Fieldwork: Racism

Racism

The Hate U Give portrays a prime example of racism that we unfortunately see too often in America. In this scene a white student Hailey is distastefully expressing her opinion that the shooting and death of black teenager Khalil by a white police officer was justified because he was "threatening" and it appeared as if he had a weapon. Starr however (a black student ) voices that she only feels that way due to her racist beliefs that black people are menacing or dangerous. Hailey did not know Khalil personally yet made these assumptions based on the color of his skin. She does not however racially profile Starr and even goes as far as to say its because she is the "non- threatening black girl". Starr not only explains that she does not blatantly have to commit hate crimes against black people to be racist, but makes an example out of her. Starr shows Hailey not only how black people are treated due to racist mindsets such as hers, but invokes the same feeling of fear many victims of these altercations have faced within her. This movie brings awareness to and educates on the matter of racism within America and highlights the severity of the situation.

Individual Racism

The black woman in this video is distressed from an interaction she had with a white lady whom initially had complimented her braids to which she responded thank you. However, the lady follows up by calling her a tree ornament. To some this may seem like a harmless comparison, but this comment is blatantly racist. Christmas ornaments are hung on trees so by calling her an ornament she is stating that she should be or would look "lovely" lynched. Lynching is the act of hanging a person by the neck. This was an extremely popular practice in the 1800's, black people being the main victims of this heinous crime and one which is slowly starting to resurface in certain areas. No crime was committed by these people in order to even attempt to justify this hateful act. Mobs would form and were notorious for spontaneously lynching black people on no grounds other than their race. Therefore, this woman was a victim of individual racism and this could be perceived as a threat to her life. This altercation could have resulted in her being harmed if this white woman had acted based upon her racist beliefs.

Microaggressions

In this video this Chinese woman made a skit based upon the microaggressions she experiences in daily conversation. Due to microaggressions being very subtle, indirect, or in some cases unintentional these instances of discrimination are usually brushed past and not properly addressed. In this case when asked "what kind of Asian are you?" instead of simply asking her ethnicity was the first example of a microaggression. The initial question was where she was from which turned into a question about her ethnicity implying that it was believed that since she was Asian she could not have been from the US. Another subtle hint was the "I knew it" response to her stating she was Chinese which is another common yet racist misconception. There are six main ethnic groups in Asia yet it is usually assumed that an Asian is Chinese before anything else just as how a lot of Hispanics are assumed to be Mexican and so on. Finally the last comment made in regards to her pronunciation of hello in cantonese was also indirectly racist. The person she is portraying making these comments is white and not a native speaker so they have no place to correct her. Instead they generalize the language of an entire group based on a show which only teaches one language and dialect. There is an extreme amount of diversity within language especially in different ethnic groups. Ni Hao Kai-Lan taught its audience mandarin whilst the speaker in this video speaks cantonese which are two distinct dialects.

Institutional Racism

This video covers events that occurred in a school in Texas in which one of its student Deandre Arnold is facing discrimination. There is a school policy implemented that was being weaponized against Deandre in order to prevent him from attending his graduation because of his hair. There are claims that his locs (which are a cultural black hairstyle) violate the school's dress code in which he would either have to cut his hair or be penalized. Deandre is facing repercussions for a personal choice that does not affect anybody or his learning which eliminates any argument the superintendent is making that this has nothing to do with race. He claims that he has to "be fair" and enforce the dress code to everyone "equally" but that county is notorious for being racist and it is evident that this is also the case. The comparison of a cultural hairstyle to underwear was extremely ignorant and racist because going out in public in your underwear is considered indecent so, he is implying that his hair makes him look indecent as well. Laws have been put in place to ban discrimination of natural hairstyles in institutions such as school and the workplace in order to prevent occurrences such as this, but it is still evidently a problem.

Phenotype

In this video this mother answers a lot of questions that she gets in regards to her red haired children. This red hair trait is linked to a lot of assumptions, the main one being that the hair color is either not real or that the kids are biracial. This is a prime example of how society associates certain phenotypes with certain races because there is a common misconception that people who are 100% black cannot carry traits including colored eyes (excluding brown), colored hair, or a straight hair texture. The phenotypes for black people are extremely diverse and come in many shades and many forms. Accurate assumptions cannot be made about someone simply based on how they look especially in regards to their background or personality, but society has normalized this behavior and it is strongly linked to phenotype.

Racial Ideology

This song is a satirical play on stereotypes of Mexican people which falls under racial ideology because they list a popular set of beliefs on this group some of which are loosely based on real events or culture, but can be harmful nonetheless due to the assumptions that it brings about. For example, the stereotype that all Mexicans are undocumented or are in cartels or gangs are some of the most harmful beliefs especially considering the mass deportation that has taken place in America which has destroyed multiple families and lives. Mexican people have also fallen victim to harassment from police due to the belief that they deal drugs or participate in gang violence. Beliefs such as these contribute to the unfair treatment of people of color and are used to justify discriminatory actions despite them being a fixed and oversimplified image or idea rather than actual reality.

Terravenger - Season 5: Part Two - The Cyberian Empire Second Coming - Episode 419 (Do Not Copy)

During one late evening, a person heard knocks on the front door of their home.

This was an elderly woman with fair skin and blue eyes. She had blond hair coming to her shoulders. She had worn a collared and buttoned blue shirt with long sleeves. She also had on tight khaki jeans and short brown Cowboy-boots.

She walked into the living room of her small cottage while Tiger as a small puppy laid under a long table in the kitchen.

The woman soon opened the door and let in another person. This was a middle-aged man with brown eyes and fair skin. His hair was short and colored salt and pepper. He wore a black shirt with short sleeves and a V-neck. He also had on a pair of brown pants, maroon socks, and black slippers. And he wore a black dress-coat that was opened.

They both sat at the table while Tiger watched with questioning eyes. Then the man started talking to the woman.

A few minutes later, the woman became sad. The small pup finally stood up as the man said more.

"He will be looked after by our scientists every minute," The man told her. "At the main time, he will learn about the history of Midas City as well as the entire planet and the galaxy. We will also train him on speaking like a human being."

The woman lowered her head and told him "But you'll be taking my baby away from me. Before his mother died, I promised to look after him as if he were my own. During these few years, we have grown to love each other more than an owner and their pet. He has become a child I was not able to have during my youth."

Suddenly, Tiger hopped onto the table and faced the elderly woman.

"Tiger?" called the elder.

The pup gave out a caring smile and the woman asked "Do you really want to do this?"

"He can understand you?" questioned the man.

"He can," The woman answered. "He may not be able to speak. But my Tiger... He is able to listen to what you are saying easily. He's always had this ability."

Tiger turned to the man and gave another smile.

"Extraordinary," commented the man. "Then I don't have to worry about the first part of our conversion. He is already able to understand human speech with no delay."

Then the woman responded "It seems he has made his decision. Tiger had agreed to come with you, Dr. Devlin."

The man faced the pup with a kind smile and responded "You will not regret this. I will do whatever I can to make you communicate better I will have the teachers help you with your education as well. And you will be looked after by not only my scientists, but someone who will care for you as Miss Susan has."

Some time later, Tiger followed the kind doctor into a small office and found someone waiting for them at a desk.

"Tiger," Devlin informed the puppy. "She will be one of the scientists who will look after you during your stay here. She is the head-doctor of this establishment."

The person was an Asian woman with black eyes and fair skin. She had long black hair with the top parts tied into a high bun. And she had on a pair of clear eyeglasses. She wore a collared light-gray shirt that had no sleeves. She had on tight blue jeans lowering to her ankles. She also had on a pair of pale-brown boots. And she wore a long white lab-coat that was opened.

The woman stood from her chair and gave a welcoming smile to Tiger.

"Hello Tiger. I am Rose... Rose Avery. You are going to have a great time here, at the Midas Academy."

Then she walked to him. Rose bent down on one knee as she continued to smile at the young pup.

"It's okay Tiger," She replied. "You are among friends. And I... I will never let anything happen to you. I promise."

They walked through the great forest as a happy Tiger looked around. And Rose explained.

"This will be one of the places where we will test your physical skills. We will make sure you are healthy. Dr. Devlin will have teachers train you in Martial Arts. And here will be where more teachers will test your knowledge."

Then Rose turned to Tiger who stared at her with questioning eyes.

She gave a short laugh and told the pup "Basically, the doctors will do what they can to train your body, speech, and brain to be greater than it is already."

And Tiger responded by shaking her head.

"Devlin did tell me that you understand human speech in a high rate," commented Rose. "I don't understand why he wants to transform you. You are already so smart."

Tiger gave a soft smile and Rose continued.

"Besides learning how to fight, I think that the doctor should skip you to Speech Therapy. And you can do the advanced learning later."

A female's voice cheerfully said "You're right about that, Doctor."

They both faced forward and spotted someone standing before them.

It was the seer known as Alexis Sanyo. She had light-purple skin, purple eyes, and short blond hair that was tied into two low tails. She also had black eyeliner and bright purple lipstick. She wore a school uniform consisting of a short-sleeved black top with a navy-blue collar with three white stripes, a large pale-violet bow on the chest, and a short navy-blue skirt. She also wore long black socks and black slippers. And her MAF badge was placed on the front left side of her top.

"Lady Sanyo," called Rose.

A cheerful Alexis bend down to the small puppy and informed the doctor "Tiger's waiting for the time to test the speech equipment."

And Rose asked "Really?"

Alexis stood up and responded "Isn't he brave. He wants to get things moving as soon as possible. Tiger here wants to show everyone at the Academy what he's got to offer. He's pretty determined."

Alexis soon turned to the other side and called out "Hey Leora!"

The two women along with Young Tiger spotted another person sitting under a large tree nearby.

This was a young woman with fine skin, brown eyes, and short brown hair with the top part tied in a tail. She wore a long white sun-dress with a small pink brooch shaped as a butterfly on the center of her waist. And she had on a pair of white slippers with flat heels.

As she lowered an opened pamphlet on her lap, the woman found Alexis waving to her.

The two women and Tiger walked to her. And Alexis did the introduction.

"Rose! Tiger! This is Dr. Leora Archer. She will be replacing Mr. Ferris as the Head of the Science Department."

"Oh?" asked Rose. "So you are Don's replacement?"

Alexis added "Leora's also a student of the great Engana Vega. And Leora has a PhD in Wildlife Studies."

Once Tiger walked a few steps closer, an excited Leora spotted him.

"Is this the one that Dr. Devlin talked about?" She asked.

"Yes he is," answered Rose. "His name is Tiger. He will be Devlin's first test subject for his research."

Archer crawled closer to him and scratched Tiger's chin with her right fingers in a loving way.

"You have a unique coat," She told Tiger. "But it is soft and perfect. And you are so precious."

A warm Tiger gave a large smile as Alexis translated "It's great to meet you, Dr. Archer."

And a loving Archer told Tiger "You can call me Leora."

"He's amazing, right?" cried an excited Alexis. "He's polite and very smart too!"

Leora wrapped her arms around the small pup and responded "He's going to do great at the Academy."

A few years later, a large army of soldiers dressed in navy-blue flak-jackets walked out from the front doors of the Midas Academy.

Leading the army was Officer Cody Durant. He had bright skin, blue eyes, and a well-built body. He had wavy dark hair with the front parts on his face as the back parts were at the top of his neck. And he had a full beard. Along with the standard navy-blue flak-jacket, he wore long black bottoms that had a thick white belt, fingerless red gloves, and black combat boots. He also wore an opened pale-green coat with long sleeves. And his MAF badge was on the front left side of his jacket.

Standing among the soldiers was the young medic named Treis. He had short light-blond hair, clear green eyes, and light skin. He had on the standard navy-blue jacket with his MAF badge on the front left side. Underneath was a light-blue top with short sleeves that looked like leaves. He also wore baggy black pants and short black boots. And he wore a pair of black gloves.

And guarding the medic was an older Tiger.

A familiar female's soft voice called out "Tiger!"

Tiger quickly turned his head to find the worried Leora Archer hurrying to him. She wore a shiny white blouse with short sleeves. And on the center of her waist was a large butterfly drawn by pale-violet lines. She also had on tight gray leggings lowered to her ankles and a pair of brown boots. And her short brown hair was tied into a high tail.

The determined Tiger faced her and said "I made up my mind, Leora. I am going to protect Treis and other medics while the soldiers defend from this enemy."

Archer lowered her head and replied "I didn't think I would stop you anyhow. You were always so giving for your own good."

Durant informed her "Officer Tiger will be watched along with all in our medical team. Don't worry, Dr. Archer."

Tears began falling from her eyes as Archer told Tiger "Please come home! Come back to me safely!"

A smiling Tiger shook his head and responded "Neither you, Rose, and Alexis have to worry. I'll be back. Count on it."

Then someone else walked to the right side of the emotional Archer.

It was a calm Alexis Sanyo. She had golden skin and purple eyes. The top of her curly brown hair was tied into two tails while the bottom part was worn down. She had on black eyeliner, brown eye-shadow, and dark-violet lipstick. She had on a sleeveless pale-rose sun-dress and a pair of short brown boots.

Alexis gave her approval to Tiger by simply shaking her head.

Black woman villain corrupts white woman, Korean man hero is killed

Dark fantasy romance without writing stereotypes of POC 

Hello! I’ve decided to write a high fantasy book that is a dark Romance. I want the main character to be black female villain and the other 2 main characters to be a Korean male hero and white female hero. But the story is really going to be able how the female white hero falls in love with the black female villain and becomes evil herself. And the male hero will eventually be killed off. What I’m asking is can this be written without giving into harmful stereotypes such as black=evil and killing off poc characters? Would it be better if I tried changing up the races of my characters?

It’s okay to write flawed, imperfect and villainous Black characters. 

Please do not make her the only Black woman character. Have non-evil Black woman character(s).

Be mindful of direct Black is evil, white is good symbolism. Especially in juxtaposition of a “pure and innocent” white woman being corrupted by the “impure, tainted” Black woman. This isn’t exactly a new or welcome narrative, so if you could work to move far away from some of those implications, that would be swell.

And the [Korean] male hero will eventually be killed off.

Is this hero the only Korean character in the story? Or worse, the only Asian character? With your major Asian character dying, I'd recommend having at least two side Asian characters who survive, preferably at least one Korean character included (this would probably be most natural as your male hero's friend or family).

Also, does this Korean character die only for the character arc or reaction of your white female hero? Or does he have his own character arc that concludes with his death? 

Your Korean hero should be a complete character in his own right and not a plot device to show the shocking tragedy of your dark romance. His life and death should also be driven by his own motives, not just supporting the white character's romance with the black character.

I understand that your story is a romance, and that the Korean male hero may need to get less focus compared to the wlw relationship. I still suggest that if you plan to kill him, he deserves to have the work put in so that his death is not solely about the shock value. If you find that difficult to work in, I suggest that you choose something less final than death - perhaps a betrayal that ended in heavy injury or retirement?

Seeing Red at Turning Red?

We saw Disney's Turning Red this past weekend and liked it a lot. It's funny and quirky. To be honest, I liked Encanto more, but Turning Red is really good.

It also seems Turning Red is lighting up many conservative Christian parents, who seem apoplectic at various aspects of the film. As a Christian, I do not understand the outrage.

(Possible spoilers below, though I don't think I'm giving too much away.)

First, it's a coming-of-age story about a 13-year-old girl who is suddenly acting moody with her parents. So, naturally, her mom talks about puberty, specifically periods. ("Has the red peony bloomed?") If your child has no idea what a period is, then these parts of the movie — including one somewhat pivotal scene — could be confusing and might require you to explain a little about the facts of life. If this is a problem, then don't see the movie. Or maybe tell your kids how human bodies work.

(Side note: I know women who got their periods at age 10, or even 9, so 13 is definitely not too old to know these things. And your kids may hear about menstruation from their peers.)

Second, it's a coming-of-age story about a 13-year-old girl who desperately wants to expand past the boundaries set by a controlling mother who is well-meaning and loving but often makes dramatically incorrect assumptions about the girl's personal life. The girl ends up lying to and disobeying her mother in various ways. If you don't want to show your child a movie that deals with youthful deceit and disobedience, then don't show them this movie — or, frankly, any coming-of-age movie made in the last 50 years. I'm pretty sure every single one involves youth who disobey their parents or other authorities. Hello 1980s???

Third, it's a story about a Chinese-Canadian girl, written and directed by Domee Shi (a Chinese-Canadian woman), loosely based on the writer's childhood experiences in Toronto, starring various Asian actresses and actors. I have seen white folks saying the movie is hard to relate to because it's too Asian. Huh? If you are only capable of relating to the life experiences of white people, then don't watch this movie. Also, you're racist. On the flip side, I've also seen white folks claim the movie itself is racist because the characters are too much like Asian stereotypes. Seriously? The production and cast really suggest otherwise, and I didn't think the characters were stereotyped, though I thought a couple were two-dimensional. But maybe if you only think about Chinese people in stereotypes, don't watch this movie. Also, you're racist.

Fourth, why are periods and disobedience so hard to talk about with your kids? Go back to watching The Lion King... hold up, disobedience there too, not to mention the death of a parent. Finding Nemo, I guess... oh, wait, that movie opens with most of a family getting slaughtered by a monster, then the only surviving child getting kidnapped. OK, fine, let's watch Mulan... hold on, the main character is a cross-dresser who encounters entire villages murdered and razed to the ground? Try something wholesome like Up, then! Oh, wait, the movie opens with the old man's wife dying and him sinking into depression. The Little Mermaid gives up her greatest talent because she has the hots for a total stranger she saw once. Bambi's mom gets killed. And so on. Why are death, war, kidnapping, terrible romantic decisions, etc., easier to discuss with your kids than menstruation? Are you not talking to your kids about those topics???

Finally, Disney doesn't owe you movies tailored to your own personal comfort level. They just don't.

If you can't tell, I think the outrage is absurd. This type of thing makes people laugh at Christianity.

And, go see Turning Red. It's funny.

- He’s definitely the most hilarious person you’ve ever met and he loves how you can almost match him with your humour. He’s always there for you and always does his best to distract you when you’re down, especially because he knows you cry easily. I’d say you swear even more than him, which isn’t easy, but every time you’re on one of your “cursing streaks” he’s just ridiculously enamoured by it. 

- Even though he likes having something to do, somehow you can put him at ease no problem and make him relax. Which isn’t to say that he won’t go batshit crazy whenever you sing and dance (he’ll always join in - he doesn’t care if you’re good or bad at dancing, but if you’d like him to, I’m sure he’d teach you). The first time he heard you sing, he was just completely starstruck, and I imagine every time he hears you he still has the biggest grin on his face. 

- He’ll steal your drawings or writing right from under your nose, holding it up high and reading it or looking at it only to compliment how great you are at it. Yeah, he likes to tease you, but he’d never miss an opportunity to tell you how much he loves you and what you do. Also, he’s pretty small in comparison to the other knights, so that you’re even smaller than him he would absolutely take advantage of. He can’t usually keep someone from reaching something just by holding it up high, but he certainly can for you. He knows his limits though. 

- Last but not least he’d definitely let you do his makeup. Like. If you want to try anything, he’ll sit there and let you try it on him.

- Lancelot is literally the sweetest, most caring guy there is. I believe that despite being someone who’s travelled and lived through a lot and doesn’t mind doing the work, he really does enjoy just relaxing with you and doing something like reading. I just have this mental image of simply the two of you cuddling, maybe him kissing your head, as he reads a book and you read yours or you write or you draw... 

- You could also talk about anything and everything with him. First of all, he always is there for you if you need a shoulder to cry on, if you’re getting emotional or just need to vent. But in general, he just loves talking to you! He loves hearing about what interests and excites you and he’ll gladly reciprocate. He’s fascinated by how much knowledge you have, how you have no problem accurately discussing things, no matter if they’re silly hypothetical things or actual important issues. 

- Honestly, I feel like Lancelot would really be surprised every time again and just as enamoured by how confident and bold and fierce you are. When you stand up for yourself, when you fight back, he’ll just raise his eyebrows and smile and keep silent while you annihilate whatever person dared to treat you wrong. Like, he’d do it for you because he’s certainly just as angry, he’s fuming inside, but he knows that you’re well able to do it yourself and that you really like to, so he watches you quietly and simply acts as moral support. 

- He, too, would absolutely love to teach you how to dance though. Personally I believe he has had Gwaine teach him before too, because there’s no way this man knew how to dance before he became a knight. But like, now that he can, he’d really like dancing with you as well.

Hello, I'm M! I'm an Indonesian bisexual woman in my late 20s and I'm the Chief of Emergency Medicine in the ER Fic and Fandom Discord server. It's a fun and inclusive space run by six queer women who met through the ER fandom - for all things ER and for everyone in the community.

What drew you to being a part of the server? Zoë came up with the idea of a Discord server for ER fanfic writers last year, and I was immediately sold on the concept of a space where fic writers could discuss writing stuff including different AUs and headcanons. Over time the server has evolved into a space for all things ER where people can share other types of content (fanart, gifs, memes etc) and talk about various aspects of the show and the fandom in general. I enjoy having good discussions with other ER fans, and while our favourite characters/ships/headcanons may differ we always discuss things in a civil (and often humorous) manner without attacking those with different opinions. In addition, as someone whose background is grossly under-represented in (Western) media I love being able to offer different perspectives on things related to the show like medicine, education, and healthcare to people who may not be constantly exposed to them outside the server.

Who is your favourite ER character? Kerry Weaver - no doubt. LGBTQ representation in Western media has grown so much since her groundbreaking storyline on the show, yet she remains the only queer TV character I can fully relate to. She's a queen, what can I say?

In addition, I always have a soft spot for Susan Lewis, whom I ship with Kerry greatly, as her level-headedness quite often offers balance to some of the show's storylines. Then there's Abby Lockhart, whose character development impresses me so much, and Carol Hathaway who was the reason I started watching the show in the first place (can you tell I'm a simp for Julianna Margulies?).

Which lesser-used channel on the server do you particularly appreciate? Being a non-native English speaking fic writer for an American show can be...well, challenging, so "translation-localisation" is great to ensure accuracy when it comes to vocabulary and other related stuff, especially as I'm not accustomed to using American spelling, terms, and slang words in my writing lol

Favourite scene, episode, season? Gosh, this is hard... One scene that I can always replay is, unsurprisingly, Kerry's coming out speech (which I have memorised lol). Another one is Robert Romano signing, "Take care of your dad." to Peter Benton's deaf son Reese which is just heartwarming in so many ways. I also have a soft spot for one particular underrated scene—from "Just as I Am", when Kerry is telling Susan about meeting her biological mother. Susan is genuinely happy to hear it, and her reaction shows how far they've come along as colleagues and wives. As for favourite episodes, "Love's Labor Lost" is a masterpiece though not one that I can watch over and over again, and I have a special place in my heart for "Secrets & Lies" for shits and giggles. Tbh I'm not sure what my favourite season is, but I usually say season 3 because it's the first season featuring both my ladies Sherry Stringfield and Laura Innes as main cast members 😂

Have you ever taken an IRL trip to the ER? Exactly three times. Once when I got dengue fever (#tropicalcountrythingz) at 14 and had to spend a couple of hours in the ER while waiting for an available bed, once when I was travelling to my mum's hometown and had an annoying allergic reaction to something I ate, and most recently about a couple of years ago I was on my way to a work event and very suddenly fell and sprained my ankle which landed me in the ER and caused me to use a crutch for a few weeks. Every now and then my affected leg bothers me (as I have a history of injuries in the same leg) and on worse days I use a crutch or a cane—hand me a lab coat and I'd do the perfect Asian!Kerry cosplay, basically.

Hi! Sorry it took me a while to reply to your question. (I had too much to say!) First, I've only ever discussed the switching issue with c-fans concerning fan works. So quite a bit of this is based on some assumptions. And I’m not speaking for everyone, just based on my limited circle of friends. The biggest chat group I’ve been in for Word of Honor only had 400 people, the group I chat in the most often really has only 15 or so very active members.

I used to have a very judgemental view of why some people don't like switching (not just the Chinese, but Asians in general, like in yaoi). Because it's related to female "fantasy". In almost every slash fandom you go to, the more popular character is usually the bottom (or bottoms most of the time). Of course, there are switching fics and flipped-around pairings, but by and large, you'll notice that there's always the same trend in all fandoms. The preference for a fixed gong/shou pairing isn't exclusive to just the Chinese; it's just a lot more noticeable when it comes to Asian fandoms, because they don’t care about being PC.

All popular novels targeted at cishet women work the same way (helping them build a fantasy by placing themselves in the lead character's shoes, the female lead or the shou). For BG novels, I think Twilight is an excellent example of this; for danmei, MXTX (both for popularity and enabling fantasy). As a matter of fact, most danmei books have the shou as the main character (these novels are marked as "主受文" on jjwxc, meaning the shou is the #1 main character).

For readers, it's part of the reader-fantasy. Asia still has relatively rigid gender expectations compared to the West, and it translates into BL/slash/danmei/yaoi fandoms. If we use WoH as an example, how many bottom!WKX fics and art are created by fans whose favourite character is WKX? I'll bet it's a majority. Generally, danmei fans tend to prefer to have their favourite character as the "primary" shou.

Non-Chinese fans are just more willing to ignore canon and write what they like, while Chinese fans who don't like it tend just to give up and move to the next one. Neither method is wrong; we can't help what we prefer.

For writers, novels with a couple (CP) that switches tend to be less popular. So if you're an author, even if you don't mind switching, why would you minimize your possible success?

Priest's novel fandoms tend to "suffer" a bit in terms of popularity as both characters in her novels are always pretty strong/toppy. I've had Chinese friends tell me they gave up on finishing some books because they "supported" the wrong CP, even though Priest doesn't write explicit smut, and they can easily skip over the suggestive few lines of text!

When it comes to fan works, many people who hate switching or flipped CP say that by doing so, the characters become OOC. I don't think this view is necessarily correct as I can usually imagine specific circumstances where switching can happen in character. The novels I struggle with finding a scenario where switching happens in-character are Qiang Jin Jiu, Faraway Wanderers & SVSSS (the side pairing).

The unreasonable fans may even claim it's disrespectful to the original work (I don't think they really believe this, though).

Most groups, topics and CP-specific forums ban all talk of switching (互攻) or flipped-couples (逆cp). You'll often see stuff like "不拆不逆" (don't split the CP and don't flip them), "拆逆SI" (split/flip them and you die) in group rules. It’s also the same the other way, for example if you post WenZhou in a ZhouWen group, you’re also going to get scolded. 

Fans don't like it, and to be honest, people with agendas to snuff out Word of Honor's (and RPS) popularity in China have been posting a lot about GJ's role in a previous danmei adaptation to turn the fans off (it works), so I get why it’s not allowed. I heart WoH and the actors, I don’t want them to lose fans just because of something as silly as topping/bottoming.

I used to be quite bitchy (and judgmental) about the lack of switching in fic because it's not realistic. After immersing myself more in c-fandom (WoH forced me back into fandom!!), I've become less judgmental about it. Because I realized the fans know it's not realistic as well, and they're okay with that. Before, I thought they were just lying to themselves tbh.

I even prefer switching (or flipped around pairings) in some fandoms because sometimes the shou is often feminised. I hate that. If I'm going to read something like this, then I might as well be in an m/f fandom. I want both the characters to seem like men and have masculine traits.

If you've been reading gay romance novels (written for men) on Amazon from before m/m novels (written for women) became popular, you would know what I mean by the difference. (I’m not trying to sound like a dick, I just don’t know how to explain this difference well) Also, does this make me seem old?? LOL. I'm going to be in my mid-thirties this year. I like that m/m novels tend to have happier endings (since I am a woman), but I also find that feminisation of the bottom/shou happens far too often.

To me, a big part of the appeal of Word of Honor is the beautiful gong who's super shameless (美人攻 ) and the alpha!shou who thinks he's the top. If it were no longer the case (ZhouWen instead of WenZhou), honestly, WoH would just be like any other danmei novel/adaptation.
