Pathfinders to Venus (ABC, 1961)
"What a paradise this place is. The way Earth must have been before man spoiled it with sprawling towns and filthy machines."
"If it hadn't been for man's filthy machines we wouldn't be here."
"That's true. And the pity of it is that after us will come rocket after rocket to ravage this planet. They'll gouge the minerals out of the earth, destroy the forests and eventually they'll go to war over it."
#pathfinders to venus#1961#children's television#classic tv#abc#malcolm hulke#eric paice#guy verney#reginald collin#gerald flood#george coulouris#graydon gould#pamela barney#hester cameron#stewart guidotti#brigid skemp#hugh evans#bob bryan#astor sklair#robert james#third and final sequel to the sadly missing Target Luna serial; this one picks up immediately after the previous story‚ Pathfinders to Mars#and sees our heroic group once again strongarmed into space exploration by the trickery of George Coulouris (bf's hatred for the character#reached new strengths during this series). this serial delves further into the sci fi fantasy vibe: where Space saw some remnants of#interstellar travel discovered and Mars had some plants and stuff‚ this one has full on alien contact with the native Venusians (handily#very much humanoid). this one also allows the real world to intrude more simultaneously tho; the Cold War‚ having hummed along happily very#much in the background so far‚ gets faced head on here as US and Soviet interests finally start to complicate the plans of our plucky (and#somehow‚ so far‚ entirely apolitical) British explorers. good old Mac Hulke gets a couple of very strong and very prescient environmental#messages in too‚ prefiguring his work on Doctor Who in the 70s (and right you were Mac‚ tho did you have to give those lines to the maniac#character who keeps almost getting everybody killed because of his blind insistence on seeking out some great Spacey Truth..)#these serials have been a lot of fun and I'd highly recommend them to any fan of old tv or old sci fi or DW or the like

March 2024 Wrap Up
March was a pretty great month. I presented at a conference in Boston, which went well and was a fun romantic weekend for me and my husband. Not sure how I feel about the year going by this quickly though...
Books Read: 8
And the biggest reason March was great is all these 5 star reads!!! Sister Novelists was my favorite of the month and my new top book of the year. And I was pleasantly surprised by my reread of Middlemarch. I actually really liked it and can no longer call it my Nemesis. And there was no least favorite!
Dear Committee Members by Julie Schumacher - 5 stars
Middlemarch by George Eliot - 4 stars ®
We Ride Upon Sticks by Quan Barry - 5 stars
Sister Novelists: The Trailblazing Porter Sisters, Who Paved the Way for Austen and the Brontës by Devoney Looser - 5 stars
Thornhedge by T. Kingfisher - 4 stars
Here, The World Entire by Anwen Hayward - 3.5 stars
The Perpetual Curate by Margaret Oliphant - 4 stars
Mislaid In Parts Half-Known by Seanan McGuire - 5 stars
On Tumblr:
Look at all these photos! Let's see if I can keep it up for the rest of the year...

EDITOR: When Adam and Eve ate of the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, they should have said no!  Earth Day, April 22, 2024 is the day to say no to plastics!  Scientists believe our bodies are absorbing micro plastics and could be contributing to health problems such as cancers, autism, Alzheimers, and birth defects.  The official Earth Day website is sending  a plea to reduce the plastic in our lives by becoming aware of the harmful affects in our bodies.  Jesus came to earth to save us from the choices Adam and Eve made!  We can make the right choice now to stop or reduce the use of plastics!  Like Jesus, your life depends on it.   LRMartin

Jottings from Miz Jeannie  by Jeannie Barnwell    The Once A Week Club                                                                   In 1896 women in Seneca decided to start a club to build friendship and discuss the news. Roads were not paved so they had to slosh through mud to each other's homes.  The Once A Week Club now meets just once a month  because we are so busy. Our club is the oldest federated women's club in the state. Inquiring citizens ask, "How did you keep the club going for 128 years?"   My answer is: At every meeting we recite a prayer.  For 128 years women have taken to heart the strong suggestions offered by poet, Mary Stuart.  Here are some excerpts from Collect.    Keep us, Oh God, from Pettiness.   Let Us Be Large in Thought, Word and Deed.   Teach us to put into Action our Better Impulses  Straight Forward and Unafraid.   Make Us Grow calm, serene, and gentle.   And let us not forget to be kind,   Let these simple words seep into your SOUL!!!    Miz Jeannie Loves You to the Moon and Back!
ASHTON RECALLS    by Ashton Hester    LONG-TIME CAMP JOCASSEE DIRECTOR RETIRED IN 1958 - (The following story was in the July 9, 1958 issue of the Keowee Courier). . .Miss Sarah Godbold of Columbia, beloved director of Camp Jocassee above Salem, is now in charge of the famous summer camp for girls for the 37th consecutive year, but she has decided to retire from the post at the close of the current season. . .Camp Jocassee, however, will continue in operation in the same fine tradition with Mr. and Mrs. Walter Foye of Tifton, Ga. taking over with the start of the 1959 session. Mr. and Mrs. Foye have been granted a five-year lease by Mrs. Morris Brown of Walhalla, owner of the property. . .The camp, with its location in some of the most scenic surroundings to be found anywhere, was established in 1922 under direction of Misses Sarah and Ludie Godbold and has grown progressively each year since then. . .Mrs. Foye has been a member of the directing staff under the Godbold sisters for some time. . .The eight-week 1958 session is now in its second week with 103 girls attending. This is the largest attendance ever, as Mrs. Brown had two additional sleeping cabins added for this year. . .(Footnote: Camp Jocassee continued operating through the 1968 season, after which it was inundated by the creation of Lake Jocassee.                                                                                                                              JOCASSEE VALLEY BREWING COMPANY,(JVBC) & COFFEE SHOP* 13412 N Hwy 11 Open Wed–Sat 9am-9pm and Sunday 12pm-7pm   Events this week:  Wed: Singer/Songwriter hosted by Rick Malec. Sharing a Story of Faith:  I once was told the story from a young woman who attended church.  The pastor instructed the congregation  that if they had anyone on their heart  who needed to be saved to place their name on a paper and place in the prayer box.  The lady of course wrote her son’s name on the paper.  Then she was thinking how much she wanted to put her husband’s name on the paper as well, although she almost felt it was of no use.  Oh well, she said to herself, I will put his name on the paper too.  And threw the paper in the prayer box……..Fast forward many years of prayers.   Both her son and her husband are saved children of God.  Prayers Work!
No wonder several of the New Testament books remind us to “ Pray without ceasing!”

Pathfinders to Mars (ABC, 1960 - 1961)
"You know, Henderson, the progress of true science depends not only on the cold, calculating types, but also on the adventurers and dreamers. There's a place for all of us under the sun."
"Yes... as long as we don't get too close to it."
#pathfinders to mars#abc#children's television#classic tv#1960#guy verney#malcolm hulke#eric paice#gerald flood#pamela barney#george coulouris#stewart guidotti#hester cameron#hugh evans#astor sklair#peter williams#bernard horsfall#maurice durant#lisa peake#ian sadler#the pathfinders serials seem to have been in production nearly back to back‚ with very little gap between transmission#but that didn't mean there weren't further shakeups between Space and Mars; the two younger children were written out (the hamster remains#don't worry)‚ replaced by the niece of Flood's character tagging along; Peter Williams patronly father figure also disappears after a brief#appearance in the first ep‚ leaving Flood's genial sciencey everyman to take the lead focus. the most notable introduction is surely#the legendary George Coulouris (a former member of Welles' Mercury Theatre) as a slightly loony alien life truther who bluffs his way onto#the voyage; bf was present for me watching this with my dad and he DETESTED this new character‚ a perpetually suspicious and treacherous#hindrance to every one else whose stupid schemes and mischief routinely put eveyone in mortal danger. i get it... but then he's kind of fun#too‚ for all his ridiculousness... ymmv of course. the Coulouris character is perhaps the closest parallel we can see with Doctor Who‚#bearing more than a little similarity to the original Hartnell characterisation (by which i mean the very very original‚ in the first few#serials; purposefully mysterious‚ even antagonistic‚ often at odds with his fellow travellers but with a bond with a young girl among them)

My Last 11 Reads
The blog takes a backseat again. This school year is exhausting. But I have found a little more time to read as I had a student teacher last quarter. Here are the good and of the last two-ish months:
Quarry Girls by Jess Lourey - 4 stars - I've read two other books by this author that all take place in Minnesota rating one a 5 and one a 3. This one goes right in between. It takes place in 1970s St. Cloud where some girls up end up missing and, consequently, dead. Protagonists Heather and her friend Brenda stumble upon something in the tunnels under the city that they swear not to tell but might solve the mystery. I liked this book, but the mystery wasn't much of a mystery. Hence, 4 stars.
Light to the Hills by Bonnie Blaylock - 4 stars - If you liked The Bookwoman of Troublesome Creek, this is similar. 1930s Kentucky is the backdrop for single mother and packhorse librarian, Rye. She grows close with a family on her route which brings up a secret from her past. Took a bit to get going, but it was a solid read.
The Gunners by Rebecca Kauffman - 4 stars - Mikey Callahan is struggling with macular degenration at age 30 when his high school friends come back to town for the funeral of a friend who committed suicide. That is all laid out early - no spoilers. Secrets of their childhood relationships and of the deceased are revealed as they reconnect. Good read!
The House Party by Rita Cameron - 2 stars - A big group of high school students decide to party at a newly constructed house. A girl is sexaully assaulted. The house is destroyed. Who is at fault? If you want to find out, lessen your curiousity. This book was not worth it.
Fairy Tale by Stephen King - 3 stars - Since I really enjoyed The Institute a few months back, I thought I'd give this one a shot since everyone was raving about it. It wasn't as much for me. A seventeen-year-old boy grows a bond with an elderly neightbor with a secret. This secret involves being transported to a different world through his backyard shed. No shocker that this book is long, but it was too long to keep my interest throughout.
The House of Ever by Sadeqa Johnson - 4 stars - This is from the author of the acclaimed Yellow Wife (which I also enjoyed). This book tells the story of Ruby, a teenager in Philadelphia, and Eleanor, a college student in DC whose stories eventually collide. But the collision was much too short for the lenght of the buildup. I wish the end could have played out just a bit longer.
The Education of Dixie Depree by Donna Everhart - 2 stars - The title character is 11 years old living in Alabama in 1969. Her life is full of trials. But the writing is simple, and the plot is extremely predictable.
Betsy and Lillibet by Sophie Duffy - 2 stars - Betsy was born on the same day as Queen Elizabeth II. The summary made me think that I'd be reading a novel with intertwining stories. However, the "story" for the Queen was just quotes which matched up with Betsy's plot. Disappointing.
The Light Pirate by Lily Brooks-Dalton - 4 stars - This one had comparisons to Station 11. Now nothing is going to be Station 11 for me, but this was a good book. And the comparison makes sense. The book takes place in the not too distant future where the climate has dessimated parts of the country. The book takes place in Florida and opens with the story of protagonist Wanda's birth and continues with Wanda as she grows and her home is endangered. Strong characters.
A Lullaby for Witches by Hester Fox - 3 stars - Augusta takes a job at a historic house in Salem and begins to research the mysterious Margaret Harlowe. I'm a sucker for a witchcraft book : especially Salem. But this one as just average.
The Love Songs of W.E.B. Dubois by Honoree Fanonne Jeffers - 3.5 stars - I had this one on my Kindle for awhile and figured that our trip to Memphis was the best setting to start this 800-page tome. Though this book is a sweeping family epic (of epic proportions!), the clear protagonist is Ailey Garfield. She is raised in the North (in the 80s/90s) but spends her summers in Georgia with her mother's family. Dealing with trauma along the way, Ailey researches the story of her ancestors. And there a lot of them to keep straight. The writing was excellent. The length was a bit much. The structure did not work for me. Skipping around in time hundreds of years did not make for the most pleasant reading experience. But I do not regret my time spent with this book. I love the parts of Ailey and learning of how her family line led to her.
