The Pretender
A/N: hi! This is Eribin. I am not a real writer, doing this as my past time. English is not my first language so bear with my English. There’s a lot of grammatical and typographical errors. This is just a fiction from my delusions 😆
WARNING: swearing, Physical abuse? (like in a friendly way)
CAST: Takahide Suzuki and Y/N
Y/N’s POV
“Y/N, please? Help me! This will be the last, I promise!” Takahide pleaded as he followed me. I'm on my way to the cafeteria for lunch during our break, when this jackass just appeared out of nowhere. We’re not classmates, gladly! He’s Takahide, my best friend. a childhood best friend.
“I don’t want to,” I said, and I kept walking. He blocked my way, held my shoulders, and looked at me intently.
"Y/N, please? She doesn’t want us to break up, but I am done with her. She’s so noisy, and she’s not like you. She’s demanding and annoying. Please! This is the last one. I promise!” He said, but I just looked away.
"Takahide, you should be the one cleaning up the mess you’ve made. The last time I said yes to this, I ended up being slapped and embarrassed in public," I said. He wants me to pretend to be his girlfriend again and confront the girl he’s talking about to break up with him. Takahide just let out an awkward laugh and removed his hands from my shoulder.
“But you get even with her, right? You even punched her when she slapped you," he said while laughing. I rolled my eyes at him, and he even laughed harder. “As your best friend, help me, Please?” he pleaded, showing puppy eyes.
“Fine. THIS.WILL.BE.THE.LAST Baka.” I said. He knows I can’t turn him down when he shows his cute side and says the best friend card. Baka is my endearment for him, which means stupid.
“Yeeeesss!!!!” He said this and jumped out of joy. He faced me while smiling widely. My heart skips a beat whenever he’s smiling genuinely at me. Yes, you’re right. I’m in love with him. I don’t know when and where, but I just woke up and realized that he’s important to me, and I get jealous of his girlfriends. YES, GIRLFRIENDSSSSSSSSSSSSS, this guy is a chickboy.
“I knew it! You can’t say no to my handsomeness!" He added, which made me make a face at him.
“Says who you’re handsome, Baka? I don’t find you that even attractive. I dunno why many girls run after you. Just eeewwww," I said and continued to walk. I was just joking at the part that he’s not attractive. He’s very attractive in my eyes.
“H-hey! I'm so handsome. Many girls told me that” he defended himself. I let out a small, sarcastic laugh.
“Whatever! maybe they are blind” I continued to walk, heading to the cafeteria. Finally! I can eat now.
“She’s in the cafeteria, Y/N.” I rolled my eyes at him. Myghad! I’m famished! I thought I can now eat in peace
“Can’t I just eat first? Can't that wait?” I asked.
“I’ll treat you outside. Whatever restaurant you like” he said. He really know how to please me.
“What does she looks like?” I asked him, and he described her, and now I'm currently walking towards her. That Baka left outside. He will just wait. Mayu is laughing and talking with her friends. Not bad, Takahide. She's pretty, AF.
“Mayu, right?” I asked the moment I stood in front of her. They stopped laughing, and all of their eyes went up to me.
Fuck you, Takahide! She seems like such a wonderful person. "Ahh yes? Who are you?" she questioned me naively.
"I am Y/N, Takahide’s girlfriend— scratch that, fiancè, I mean.” I said, and their eyes were like bawling out of shock. I let out a small smile at them.
“I don’t believe in you," she just said, and she had teary eyes. I mentally rolled my eyes, and I want to beat Takahide’s ass right now.
“Then don't; I'm just saying this as early as possible so it won’t hurt you that much. Eventually, he will find another girl to play with and leave you hanging behind," I said, putting my hands in my pocket. “Break up with him, Mayu. You don’t deserve Takahide. You deserve better," I said, and I was about to leave when she shouted something that makes me realized my real feelings
“Is it okay for you then? That he’s playing around behind your back; you’re his fiancé, right?” I turn to face her and just smile. More likely, a miserable smile. A great smile but my eyes are filled with sadness
I went out of the cafeteria, and the moment I saw Takahide, he was smiling while looking at his phone. more likely, a victory for him. My blood boils. I pulled his hair when I came near him.
“Aawww!! What is that for? You’re being a sadist now, Y/N,” he said. It just hit me when Mayu said that if it’s okay with me if Takahide is playing around, of course not. will never be. It’s not okay with me. But I don’t have the rights. We’re not a thing. I mean—he’s not even mine to begin with. I'm just his best friend. only his best friend. I didn’t answer him and headed back to my room. I have no appetite to eat right now. especially with him. I am irritated with his face right now.
“H-hey!!” He said as he grabbed my arms to stop me from walking away from him.
“What now, Takahide? I'm tired, so don’t bother me for a while," I said, continuing to walk away from him.
“Wait up, Y/N; I will treat you to lunch, right?” He said while chasing me. He stopped me once again.
“Treat yourself then. Congratulations on being single again! Then go ahead, find another girl, and fuck their lives, and I will be here to clean up again the messes you’ve made," I said out of frustration. I am more than mad right now. at him and myself. I wish I could teach my heart to unlove him.
“What’s wrong? That would be the last. What happened inside?" He just asked.
“You. And this," I said as I pointed at my heart. He seems confused with my words, but I don’t care. I left him there, but moments later, I could feel his hands once again in my arms. He stopped me and faced me.
“What do you mean, Y/N?" I remained silent. Good thing it’s lunch break and most of the students are in the canteen or outside the campus. I am contemplating if I should admit my feelings for him. But I knew once I confessed, our friendship would be over. Whatever happens, happens.
“I like you, Baka. No— I love you. But I shouldn’t love you, right? We’re best friends," I said, and he was silent and looked down. He's like disappointed? I let out a sigh. I knew it. He will reject me because he doesn’t like me.
“Fuck you, Takahide. Don’t come near me for a while, please,” I said as I walked away. I cried while walking away. What the hell happened? Did I just confess? Haist! You’re so stupid! It makes me more disappointed when he does not come after me. Maybe I’m right. He doesn’t like me at all.
—————— 1 week later
One week had passed. He really did not show his face to me. I’m glad, but there’s something inside me saying, ‘I miss him’. Fuck! You shouldn't, Y/N! You should move on from now on.
Pretender? Yeah, that’s me. I pretended that I didn’t have feelings for him. I'm the greatest pretender. It’s okay with me to be just a friend, as long as he’s always by my side. I was so stupid last time for confessing my feelings. And now, I regret it. My heart feels so heavy after that incident, and up until now, it has never felt at ease.
“Y/N, someone’s looking for you. He’s outside,” my classmate said. My heart skips a beat. He? A man? Takahide? I went out, and there’s no one outside. The hell? no one's outside. I will punch my classmate for making fun of me. I was about to go inside the room when a man grabbed my left arm and dragged me along with him. Oh? where he came from?
“Baka..” I silently said as he dragged me. He looks so serious. He never glanced at me. What the hell is up with this guy? He never showed his face for a week and just dragged me out of nowhere! Good thing it's a festival right now and most of the faculty are not in school right now. We’re just required to go to school for general cleaning or something.
We’re now on the school rooftop. No one’s here aside from us.
“Why did you drag me here? If you want us to talk, you can just say, or we can talk outside our room,” I said while checking my arm, which he held.
“Y/N, about last week—" I cut him off by picking his ears.
“A-aw!! Aawww!! Yah! That hurts! " He said as he tried to get out of my hands in his ears.
“About last week, forget it, Takahide. I was carried away by my emotions. That will never happen again," I said, smiling at him, but he was still serious and his face was stern.
"No,” he simply said, closing our distance while still intently looking at me. My heart skipped a beat for a moment as he went close to me. My body just froze and couldn’t move.
“Takahide?" I uttered, but it looks like he’s not happy.
“Don’t call me that. Call me Baka like you always do,” he seriously said, and I stood up straight. Chin up, chest out.
“Why would I? Don’t tell me what to do! You’re just my best friend," I said proudly at him. It looks like he’s not happy with it.
"Best friend to future lover,” he seriously said. I looked at him in disbelief, like that was an awful kind of look. I can't believe him at times like this
“Stop joking around, Baka. I’ll go back to my room. Bye,” I said and turned my back at him, but he hugged me from behind.
“Y/N, I missed you. One week without your presence is torture for me. I didn’t bother you for a week, like you said, but I am watching you from afar. I am a jerk. I know. I played, and I broke many innocent hearts. I shouldn’t have done that in the first place. I am deeply sorry for you and for them, but I will make this right, I promise," Takahide said as he made me face him. I was stunned for a moment hearing all of this from him. ‘What does he mean by that?’
“Y/N, if you allow me, I will correct all my wrongdoings and let me court and love you,” he seriously said while looking at my eyes and brushing my hair out of my face and putting it behind my ears. Did I hear it, right? He will court me and love me.
“I regret all of it. I know this is lame, but I just do it because I want to divert my attention to other girls. I have loved you ever since, Y/N. The first time I saw you playing in the rain, I was sure that I liked you. I am scared of losing and hurting you because I know I am not capable enough; I am not the right person for you; I am a jerk; I am a coward; basically, I am a walking red flag. If you didn’t confess that day, I will continue playing with girls' hearts. I didn’t know that we had the same feeling with each other,” he said, and I just stared at him. Eh? So— he loves me too?
“I love you, Y/N.” He said as his head headed towards mine. Is he going to kiss me? But I kicked his legs.
“Aw! Aaaww! Aaawww!! What the— what’s your problem!?” He shouted as he limped in front of me.
“My problem?? You, Baka! What do you think of me, Huh? Am I that easy for you? " I shouted back. We’re always like this. Trust me. Maybe our love language to each other is shouting. Not good, right? But this is how we're used to.
“What? Ofcourse not! "He said
“Then why are you going to kiss me? Did I say yes? Did I give you permission? You should earn my yes, you Baka! " I said, turning my back at him. The moment I turned around, a smile was written all over my face. I am suppressing my happiness right now. I am happy that this is not a one-sided story. I will not hide. I will not be a pretend girlfriend anymore. No more pretending. A tear came out of my eyes, finally!
"okay! okay! I will court you and earn your yes. I know you can't say no to my charm" he shouted while limping. I, walking away put my finger heart at him and laugh. He stood up well and smiled.

♡
You could feel his eyes on you, boring into you like some animal. You tried your best to ignore it, opting to pretend to scroll through your phone as he sat directly across from you on the subway. Every time you would look up to try to catch him in the act, his eyes would frantically dart away as if he hadn’t been staring you down for the past five minutes. Your better judgment should’ve told you to be worried about some strange man’s eyes being so keen on you, but something about the way he twiddled with his thumbs so anxiously, or haphazardly drew his hand through his messy hair, made you feel like he wasn’t a threat. Strange, sure, but threatening? You didn’t think so.
You glanced back up again, and again his eyes flickered away quickly. He looked wild, untamed, but somehow equally as shy and awkward. You watched as his tongue poked out from the corner of his mouth as he pretended to read the advertisement displayed above your head. You wondered if he even knew how to read, because his eyes certainly didn’t seem like they were actually focusing on any of the words.
You slowly tucked your phone away into your pocket. If this was a game he wanted to play, you could play it too. So, you decided to stare back at him while he pretended to be preoccupied. You could tell by the way he was starting to fidget that he could feel your gaze on him, saw it from the corner of his eyes. It was making him nervous. You leaned forward, propping your elbow on your knee and letting your chin rest in your palm. Now you were making it obvious. Served him right for doing the same to you.
His leg started to bounce, and he turned his head to pretend to stare between the throngs of people standing in the subway carriage. A hand came up to nervously scratch at his neck. But you didn’t let up. You would make him acknowledge you. As you casually watched him, you couldn’t help but notice that despite his wildness, he was actually kind of cute. Like, in the way one might think a rabid squirrel is still cute despite its savage nature. You almost laughed at the thought, biting it back, but still allowing a smile to draw upon your lips.
It seemed he couldn’t take it anymore, your smile not managing to escape his attention, and he finally looked back to you, your gazes meeting. You gave a little wave. “I couldn’t help but notice that you keep staring at me,” you said. “I thought it was only fair that I should get the chance too.”
He swallowed thickly and tried clearing his throat. He opened his mouth once, decided against whatever he was going to say, and shut it. He contemplated, fingers wrenching at a frayed string from his jean jacket. He stared at you hard for another moment before finally speaking. “Oops.”
Oops? You couldn’t help but chuckle at his response. He was weird, that was for sure. A bit endearing, though. “What’s your name?”
He pointed to himself incredulously, like he had no idea why you would want to be bothered with knowing his name. “Me?” He asked.
You nodded, leaning back in your seat again and crossing your arms over your chest. The overhead comm system dinged as the subway screeched at the arrival of a stop, “Toarushi,” it announced. “Next stop: Nagata.” He didn’t move, and neither did you. The train doors closed, and it was off again.
“Ah, um…” he cleared his throat again. “Miyauchi. You can call me Binzo. If you want.”
“Binzo? Do you want me to call you Binzo?”
He nodded vigorously, some of his anxiety seemingly dissipating at the casual conversation. “Er… What’s yours?”
You responded with your name, and a wide, upbeat smile overtook his face. You felt your heart jump at the sight of it. Okay, maybe kind of cute had been an understatement. There was definitely something novel about him that seemed to draw you in. The next stop was yours, so you wanted to get in as much conversation with him as possible before it was time for you to depart. “So?”
He tilted his head, waiting for you to continue.
“So,” you repeated. “Why were you staring at me?”
His eyebrows shot up, as if it was an obvious question that shouldn’t have even necessitated his answering. Like he couldn’t imagine why you even needed to ask. “Because you’re pretty,” he answered, leaning forward slightly. “Is it okay? If I look at you?”
Your face suddenly became very hot. Now it was your turn to be the nervous mess. But, you hadn’t expected him to answer so bluntly. Usually guys would walk their way around things, try to not-so-subtly subtly let you know that they were attracted to you. But this? This was a new way of flirting, certainly. Though, it didn’t really feel like he was trying to flirt with you, more so just being strikingly honest. “Well, you can look at whatever you want to look at,” you said. “I can’t stop you.”
“I’ll stop if you want.” His earnest eyes bored into you now just as intensely as they had before.
You felt your palms start to sweat. “I don’t mind,” you replied, trying to be equally as honest but finding it hard to stay as unaffected as he was. You shifted in your seat, trying to somehow find the high ground in the conversation again. “Do you normally stare at people you think are pretty?”
“No,” he answered, crudely sticking a finger into his ear and giving it a dig. You almost snorted. “Not normally.”
“Just something you thought you’d try out?” You joked.
He looked at you seriously as he slowly stuffed his hands into the pockets of his denim jacket. He looked like he was contemplating your question. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone as pretty as you.”
This time you couldn’t help but laugh. “Well, I appreciate it. You’re not so bad yourself.”
You took note of the almost indiscernible pinkness that erupted over his neck at your words. Now it was his turn to shift in his seat, his foot ticking like it so badly wanted to start tapping anxiously at the floor. You could tell he was having trouble with responding, so you decided to bail him out by continuing. “When’s your stop, by the way?”
“Uh… The one we just left?”
You gawked at him. “You mean, you missed your stop?”
A grin split his face again. “You were talking to me.” He shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly. “It’ll come back around.”
You would have facepalmed if not for how endearing his blatant earnestness was. This guy was like no one you had ever met before. Though, you couldn’t help but to feel similarly to him. The blur of familiar buildings from beyond the subway windows told you that your stop was coming up. And yet, you didn’t want to stop talking to the oddball in front of you. “You didn’t have to miss your stop for me,” you said. “It’s not like we won’t talk again.”
“Huh?” He craned his head to the side, bewilderment on his face.
You smiled as you dug your phone out from your pocket, unlocking it and reaching across the aisle to hand it to him. His head remained cocked as he eyed your phone curiously. It was clear he hadn’t the slightest idea as to what you were insinuating. You rolled your eyes. “I’m asking for your number,” you clarified.
His eyes widened as they flashed back and forth between you and the phone. “Huh?” He said again.
You huffed. “So we can talk again? If you’d like?” The train began gradually screeching to a halt, having finally reached your stop. You started to pull your hand with the phone back as you spoke. “But, if you’re not interested—“
Just as the words started leaving your mouth, Binzo’s hand shot out and snatched your phone from yours with such an excitable ferocity that it almost startled you. “Yes!” He blurted, like he was afraid you’d change your mind. He started childishly one-finger tapping at your phone to put his number in, intense concentration on his face. “I didn’t think you’d be interested, is all,” he quietly muttered, more so to himself than anything, but the words still reached your ears.
The subway came to a stop as he finished putting his number in your phone, handing it back your way. You couldn’t help but notice the way his hand shook slightly. Purposefully, you grazed your fingers against his palm as you took the phone from him. He dazedly looked down at his hand where you had touched him.
You laughed as you stood up, his gaze snapping back up to meet yours. The subway doors opened with a shrill squeak, as if announcing your departure. You sent Binzo a soft smile and a wink, making him go pink again. Oh, you could get used to this. “I am very interested,” you said over your shoulder, crossing the threshold to exit. “See you next time. It’s a date.”
The doors closed, just in time for you to hear Binzo’s voice echo from inside. “Huh?!”
