I really thought that this was being a tad unrealistic, even when I first started thinking about it. But with toga refusing to be imprisoned and taking death in Ochakos arms as a sacrifice, I can’t help but wonder that if (when, lets be honest here this is another fake out lol) toga does survive in some miracle, probably through hawks, what IS an ending in which she isn’t imprisoned? Where is that?

UA BABY! Aoyama was imprisoned there when he was found out to be the spy, toga has REPEATEDLY been in the UA school uniform in tonsssss of official art! Which I talked about a certain specific official art here which was the biggest hint imo that it’s where toga would end up belonging. Will that make parents of UA students angry? The civilians? OTHER UA students, especially non heroics students? Absolutely it will. But that’s the thing, they’re going to be angry but change needs to happen. If toga was under INTENSE supervision and especially Ochako’s supervision then… I think it could work.

Toga and ochako are together, dekus looking away bc he no longer has that much importance to their story, and Aizawa is oddly close. Not yet aware of the situation or what may be in store for him in the future.

But he is their teacher, he is their guide. It’s his job to protect and, most importantly, accept them.

The members including the mods sexualize the female and male characters on the daily but when someone makes a post about the possibility of queer characters and ships in Demon Slayer suddenly it's 'too much'.

sampo is either an emanator of elation or aha themselves and ill be taking no criticism on that, will also talk about ahavilii

the most obvious hint to sampo being an emanator/aha are how his powers looks. the daggers he has, cut through the ground leaving faint void marks as if he was cutting through reality itself. void is a reoccuring theme in his animations in general, as it appears in his burst as well. sampo also appears to be able to teleport, as he did drag four people to the underworld at once, not to mention his constant reappearing back and forth. he also leaves no traces in the sand or the water.

another thing, is how he appears to end up on the luofu, following us same as Aha (their bells and giggled are heard in the Phantylia battle). Sampo had no need to follow us like that if he was just a regular masked fool, we benefitted his schemes and he should go on his marry way, especially since he really seems to care about Belobog, so be should stay and keep an eye on it. instead he flew/teleported all the way to us. but why would Aha be so interested in us anyway?

Aha cared about Akivilii (in their own way), they mourn them and seem to have an extensive history with the trailblaze path as well. Aha seems to care about us the most in the SU, so why wouldn’t they care about us so much in the real world? not to mention I also believe we’re Akivilii’s emanator (just an emanator, not a reincarnation as ive seen people say), which makes us even more connected to Aha.

and it shows.

Aha just doesn’t let serious harm come to us, as Sampo saves our asses for zero reason (do we really believe he would save us if we weren’t trailblazers?), flatters us as if we’ve known eachother for years even if he has nothing to gain WHILE we are being dicks to him. it mirrors Aha and Akivilii now that i think about it. Sampo fucks with us, we seem to despise him but at the end of the day we are drawn to eachother

also on that note;

schemes of elation seem to collerate with our trailblazing for some reason? which ties in with how Aha just doesn’t let us come to serious, mortal harm in any way. sparkle could easily kill us, like in real life, not just the dream (putting aside 2.3 knowledge), yet she helped us discover the deeper dreamscape. obviously because it was beneficiary to her, but after such a case happening twice it should start to raise some eyebrows.

also, Aha being with us during the Phantylia battle means they would propably step in if we were truly fucked, because i doubt they’d just watch us die, how would extinguishing one of the last sparks of Akivilii be entertaining?

also i think the next path we’re gonna get is either elation or hunt, since we arent getting eurudition or abundance (unless we want the luofu to shoot as down or smth). if not for the fact that 5* herta and march seem to be further in development than 5* sampo, i doubt we’re getting sampo lore soon :(( i bet theyre gonna try to finish ipc a little more before they divr into aeons

my recent fixation has been the wings of fire book series since ive been rereading it, which i feel is not very related to any of my other interests and so i havent posted much about it. but i literally have “post whatever i want” in my bio so i’m not going to let the whims of an audience stop me any longer

i realy like clay in the first book and if he retained the same level of depth throughout the series he would be in the top tier-- its just that his writing makes him so shallow in the rest of the books it makes me so sad :[ i was listening (audiobook) to hidden kingdom and like. 90% of his lines/actions were about food and the other 10% were about protecting the other dragonets..... i related so much to his anxiety in the first book and his empathy and his ability to see both sides of things... gah. sad.

jambu is also one of my glup shittos. i love his whimsical ass

foeslayer is a hard one for me because she never did anything wrong she's just..... not as present as i wish she was. she's treated as a very vital character with how many large plot points hinge on her, but she doesnt have much agency herself. its stated a lot that she's extremely important to darkstalker but in the legends book we dont see much of them interacting? idk. i like her but she always feels so uninvolved

the 'beat you to death (funny)' tier is just for characters who i like on some level but are also pathetic and worms. out of that tier i like deathbringer the best and mastermind the worst

tier after that are for characters who i have a positive opinion on but not really a strong one. anemone and sora are more complicated, but i do generally like them. i really just feel bad for them if anything. i think i like clearsight more than the other characters in this tier, but she's not in the 'wonderful :D' tier because i dont think she has a very strong personality

the 'conflicting feelings' tier is kind of a trainwreck because it means a lot of things

obviously riptide is the outlier since he hasnt done anything nearly to the degrees of coral, glacier, and albatross-- but i do have conflicting feelings on him. riptide is completely inoffensive, hasn't done anything wrong, i just dont like him because he has no real reason to be in the story. like you could write him out very easily. his only purpose is to be a love interest for tsunami which is like...... gh. dude. she doesnt need one. if she's gonna have a romance it should come naturally. not "wow this seawing is handsome and also he's the first one ive properly met as well as a guy do im in love with him now" like girl do better

coral and glacier both have done bad things and obviously have bad intentions but also.... theyre not the worst. bad but not the worst.

albatross is a victim of emotional abuse and even though that doesnt justify his actions it does explain how they could have been negated

next 3 tiers are self-explanatory. i forgot to put her on there but queen vigilance goes in 'the grime beneath my shoe'

actually no i wanna talk about scarlet and battlewinner: i think the thing that i like about them is their theatrics. they bot have such a huge presence, like a disney villain. whenever i read scarlet dialogue it almost feels poorly written with how over-the-top she is but. no other character talks like that. its just how scarlet is. and i think thats so good. whereas battlewinner's situation conceptually is just cool as hell. i love how she struggles to speak because of the ice in her throat, her rage, the way she's hinted at but her reveal is completely unexpected...... very very good

smolder/thorn is like if glorybringer was bad. mostly just because thorn can do way better than him. smolder and vermilion should kiss each other and bond over being wimp princes who havent actually done anything wrong themselves but bow to tyrant relatives to avoid getting killed

i dont know if this will be an unpopular take but clay and peril is such an awful ship. i like them as friends, i think theyre great as friends, but a romantic relationship between them would be so deeply unhealthy considering their situation. peril would be even more dependent and attached to him than she already is, and clay is not the kind of dragon who has an easy time saying 'no' to things. it would not be a malicious relationship in any way, but it would not be good for them. peril needs to learn how to live for herself, not for the approval of anyone else

Murderella: they could be sitting together talking shit about the rest of them, maybe with jean-pierre cooking them up a special dinner for two. bill's brought them out to one of the myriad of private balconies and tried to make it kinda romantic, she loves it.

Cal & Pickles: House is empty, they've got the Top Gun films set up in order (and then a myriad of Tarantino's and then Halloween films). He's got all he needs weed-wise, there's beer in the cooler, and the hot tub is ON. Nathan joins in when he's done writing music and Cal is the meat in their sandwich.

Olena and Skwisgaar: it's self care night!!! No gigs in the next few days, no rehearsals in the morning. Face masks, foot massages for each other, back massages, hair masks and then they share a bubble bath and a bottle of prosecco, washing out each other's hair, detangling, just taking hours and hours together in the bath.

Murderella: Cars - Zorya could not care less, but Bill could go on for hours about mostly historical ones. She'll pretend to listen. The one thing she cannot bring herself to concentrate on.

I cannot think of a single thing Bill doesn't like that Zorya partakes in. He's got it bad.

Cal & Pickles: Texas; turns out Pickles isn't really wild about the ranch life or Texas in general (it's hot, her brothers scare him). but will visit when she does to see her dad and to support her.

Cal tolerates weed out of everything else Pickles does; she loves coke and drinking, but for some reason weed is an actual ick. Not strong enough to deter her, obviously.

Olena & Skwisgaar: Both Olena and Skwisgaar base their lives around their music and being the best, so they don't really have other hobbies to hate. Skwisgaar puts up with going to the ballet with Olena, cause she likes it, and it makes him look classy compared to the guys.

77: What is something they would never forgive the other one for doing/saying?

Murderella: Again, Bill's got it down bad (and honestly so does Zorya). They say some pretty heinous stuff to each other at the start of their relationship during the blowouts, so kind of get the worst of it out the way. But Zorya could never forgive any sort of comparison to Olena specifically, or Bill ever stating he'd want to sleep with her or choose her over Zorya. And I think Bill is the same; he couldn't handle any sort of inference that Zorya would prefer to be with any of the guys, especially if she went into detail or showed that she thought about it.

Cal & Pickles: It's not that Pickles is possessive over Cal, but the thought of losing her when he's opened up to her hurts, so I think any hint of cheating on him (or even just pulling back!!) when he's given her Everything of himself would be too much. Which was a struggle for them at first as they tried to find the balance of casual and monogamous when Pickles was pretty much ready to jump in and Cal didn't really know what was going on. I think Cal takes herself super seriously as a person though, and I think if she ever heard Pickles mocking her like, REALLY badly to someone else then I think she'd be devastated.

Olena & Skwisgaar: Theyre both so chill and not even sure if they're in a relationship together that I don't think they'd hold anything against the other. However I know it would hurt Skwisgaar's feelings a lot if Olena talked badly of his stage presence, as he secretly holds her opinion in high regard.

I don't think Olena would ever find it unforgiveable so to speak (because she almost expects it at this point) but if Skwisgaar ever explicitly chose Zorya over her, she'd just be like... Deflated, unsurprised, hurt but just leaves the room with nothing else to say to him.

Some lore :

Artia went to Roll The Dice - got called in and out of stupid, dumb luck managed to loose like Cuphead did in similar fashion - all thoguht it was more of an accident than a loss.

She managed to ditch but left King Dice with his reputation ruined and didn't get the soul, leaving him furious at Artia promising that them he sees her again he'll take the matters into his own hands, not forgiving her for the humility.

Devil thankfully gave Dice one last chance (which then fucks him over in the cuphead show timeline as we know -).

Archi feeling gulity for leaving a star of the radio and what happend, so as to help him they returned as Arthur to qualify for a job backstage and help him.

They got the job (don't ask how) and now work or both Dice and Devil. Just as Arthur was about to tell him he's Artia and wanted to apologise, he found out about the soul thing and realised he dodged a bullet. Not telling Dice who he is.

Therefore Dice doesn't know Artia = Arthur.

Arthur becomes Dices minion and helps him backstage and during their mission to catch the cups.

Arthur however is a choatic netrual and even tho he's helping Dice, he sneaks away and as Artia helps the Cups to dodge the traps etc.

Dice saw Artia one time which made his calmed anger come back to being flaming. It will be relevant later as Dice one day visits Arthur and notices female products and the dress in their house. Making him connect the dots.

Thruth comes out ,Devil is actually impressed?? And lets em be, not before getting their ass whooped and making a promise that now he'll make sure they wont help the cups- leaving Dice bewildered and angry that he's still stuck with them lol. (Dont ask just roll with it,im being gay)

And therefore they never helped the cups again or at least not as they used to. Just a small hint,like a wink and that's it.

part of me does feel like its lacking a bit. like the show. & maybe thats a 2022 perspective in combination with my own personal tastes. bc i guess i like my scifi... a LITTLE quirkier? LOL. WHO'D HAVE THOUGHT. or not even quirky per se, but... i feel like THUS far bsg is lacking a lot in terms of creativity.

like maybe its bc we havent seen that much with the cylons, yet, but im kind of... uninspired by them thus far as antagonists. the most interesting thing abt them are the models that look like ppl- and whilst i like gaius' hallucinations, and boomer is who im most invested in rn, idk? other than that they havent really done much; theyve kind of just been serviceable. like do you know what i mean? nothing is stand-out to me, yet, bc theyve really just been held at a distance thus far and i GUESS that could be the shows pacing, too, but still. nonetheless, it feels a bit lacklustre in terms of its own identity for sth thats 5 eps + a miniseries in- but maybe again thats a 2022 perspective, yknow?

im a dif anon but imo, season 3 of the yj cartoon sucked absolute ass, and everyone and their mother knows it. Whats surprising, though, is that i think even the writers know it. because season 4 has absolutely JUMPED in writing quality, and it’s been pretty great so far! theyve gone out of their way to correct a lot of their past mistakes from season 3, from general fumbles in writing/characterization/storyline to some of the more straight-up offensive shit they did in s3 (leaning a little into some unhealthy tropes, like someone comes out as bisexual by cheating on their boyfriend with someone of a dif gender like thats soooo hashtag rebellious). if youd be watching just for Dick/batfam stuff though, season 3 was rough on his characterization imo, and so far his appearances in s4 have been pretty bare, so we’ll just have to see! but anyway i totally get it if it just doesnt seem worth it—im still reeling from the s1->s2 timeskip, too, lmao!!

oh and also, they keep hinting that theyre gonna bring jason back as red hood, so i suppose thats something to look out for, but idk if it’ll *actually* happen or not. theres also some hope for wally coming back, but its probably kinda flimsy in all honesty lmaooo

Body Positivity + Writing

So some of my recent reading partially inspired me to make this post, but also jk Rowling being discussed over the past few days. The discussion of the types of bigotry and prejudice in her writings reminded me of something that always subtly bothered me about the Harry Potter books: how they characterized people based on their appearance, making evil characters fat or else portraying them as ugly in some way.

And it’s very common to end up using a character’s physical appearance to hint at the kind of person they are, and pretty natural too, since we want to start developing them as a person right away. But this leads to falling into unfortunate and negative stereotypes.

So I decided to write out some guiding thoughts on portraying different types of bodies in writing and some of those harmful tropes.

So this is one of the most obvious things to avoid, but it’s still a trope I see even in recently published stuff all the time: making a villainous character fat to characterize them as greedy, or obsessed with pleasure or comfort. Now, this is something that people actually believe, that being overweight is a physical manifestation of some kind of moral deformity, but it just doesn’t reflect reality. Even apart from any type of moral symbolism, writers sometimes make an evil character fat as a sort of way to make us feel disgusted with them, and describe the character’s body in nasty and negative ways to further this disgust. But it’s not a good thing to do, since there are real readers who are going to see themselves in your descriptions.

Furthermore, in general it’s common for writers to use really dehumanizing language and comparisons to describe fat people, often saying that their faces or bodies look like some unpleasant non-human thing or substance. This is, for reasons already articulated, bad.

I almost want to say that it’s a good idea to keep an eye on any time you start using lots of non-human comparisons to describe a character, because I feel they’re commonly used in conjunction with racist or misogynistic or otherwise prejudiced sorts of description. There’s a line between quirky, unique description and dehumanizing description. If you describe a man as being as tall, straight and prickly as a pine tree, that’s pretty delightful, and it isn’t really relating his appearance to some negative aspect of his character. If you compare a man to a rat, that obviously has negative connotations, and also associates those connotations with appearance whether you intend to or not—pointy nose, large teeth, maybe. It is, of course, important when writing such descriptions to keep in mind what sorts of description have racist or antisemitic connections, and avoid unintentionally evoking those things.

Do be careful about a character who is fat being described as completely unable to do any kind of physically strenuous thing at all. Obviously your body type puts limits on what you can do physically—that character is going to have a rough time with, say, running long distances—but what we view as “strong” and “healthy” is very warped and just from my experiences in martial arts, being chubby does not stop you from being incredibly strong, having a lot of stamina in a fight, and in general being able to kick someone’s ass. For god’s sake, just because a character has a belly doesn’t mean they’re going to be wheezing climbing stairs. (I think there’s the presumption that if this character exercised at all they would lose the weight. That’s really not how it works.)

A character who is strong or a fighter doesn’t have to have abs. They don’t have to have super defined muscles. They definitely won’t be chiseled and toned and shit like a bodybuilder. They have a FUNCTIONAL body and theyre not doing strict diets and weird juice cleanses for the Aesthetic to put on their Instagrams. A strong character is going to be very solid and have a lot of mass but it’s not going to look all defined and shit, unles they’re like actively flexing.

There are, obviously, lots of problems with how women are written about, and a lot of those problems extend to their bodies specifically. Maybe the most common broad problem I see with describing women and their bodies in fiction is how often they’re described in terms of how attractive they are. Sometimes this is very overt—the narrator points out the size of her breasts and the shape of her body in a way that’s clearly centering all description of her based on how sexually attractive she is. Sometimes it can be subtler, like when a description seems to be running through a comparison and contrast with a woman in her 20’s who is thin but with curves in all the right places, pointing out all the places that you’d expect to have attractive or unattractive qualities described and essentially judging them even if not obviously. If you say that a woman is in her late thirties but looks younger and that she has thin lips but deep blue eyes, you’re still describing her in terms of attractiveness even if you aren’t being overly sexual about it. That is, there shouldn’t be any “but” about having thin lips and blue eyes. Those are just qualities of her face.

The same goes for describing women we’re supposed to dislike as having masculine characteristics.

Let. Female. Fighters. LOOK. Like. Fighters. If your female character is a warrior or assassin or soldier and has trained for much of her life for it but she still has slender feminine shoulders and a thin body and a thigh gap im calling bullshit. (Look at any of the Throne of Glass covers if you want to know what I mean. Her thigh gap. Ugh.) She will have put on muscle mass, lots of it, and that means she’s going to look a little bit bulky. Big arms, thick solid shoulders, massive thighs. Your male character shouldn’t be thinking “omg she’s so smol and light” when picking her up, he should be more like “SHIT ARE YOU MADE OF PAVING STONE?” because muscle is very dense and results in you being heavier than you look.

Please let female characters be BIG. please give us at least the occasional woman that is like 6’2” and beefy af.

Scars don’t have to come in two forms, “hideously disfiguring” and “sexy.” Scars don’t have to have some kind of horrible angst attached to them either. Characters can have scars with funny stories behind them, or not much of a story at all.

hi i’ve noticed the pencey prep gay conversation going on over on @awsugar and i have spent lots of time dissecting pencey prep lyrics and subjecting nathan @faggot-frank to my deranged ramblings so Here is my pencey prep super ultra mega gay lyrical analysis masterpost. it’s very long so its all under the cut but i will include a TL;DR for those who dont wanna read paragraphs of my deranged ramblings: Pencey prep uses lots of themes of: heartbreak, forbidden love, keeping love a secret, and toxic relationships. which none of that is gay on its own but combined with them almost never using gender indicators in their songs and the “nail in the coffin song” of 8th grade it ends up being a very Fruity Album.

I will be going through heart break in stereo in order and pointing out which lyrics and elements of certain songs jump out to me as Super Mega Gay and then summarizing my conclusions at the end <3

1 ) PS Don't Write

PS don't write is about leaving a toxic relationship, it has notes of moving on and leaving someone behind. "packed up all my shit / stole back all my tapes / left your spare key under the mat / this is not a joke / you'd better learn to take a hint / 'cause i'm not coming back / maybe you'll understand / when you're waking up alone / in a cold and empty bed." it has no gender indicators or pronouns which is the case in a lot of pencey prep songs, and something i'll bring up quite a bit. it also has general "coming of age" themes, something common in lots of pencey prep songs. which Yeah apply to straight people to but read in this context combined with future evidence can be pretty Fuckin Gay. "somewhere along the line / i found a hidden strength / i didn't know i had / standing on my own / cutting all the strings / that you used to control / surprise surprise / i am long gone / if you thought you could hold me down / by holding me up / you were wrong / you don't call the shots anymore." not to say only gay people can find inner strength and the room to love themselves but combined with other context it is a really poignant message about accepting yourself for who you are.

2) Yesterday

Yesterday is very repetitive and has a lot less to analyze, but the constant themes of wanting to "run away" strike me as very Fruity. once again, not saying gay people are the only people who can want to run away or escape from something But Combined With Other Context. and once again a song with no gender indicators, doesnt specify who the speaker is running away with or what they are running away from. just that they want to Leave. "i wanna run with you / i don't care what we do / gotta get out of this place / because it feels like yesterday." also saying "it feels like yesterday" could mean that the town feels backwards or old timey in its beliefs, implying homophobia. how the speaker wants to run away from an old fashioned town.

3) Don Quixote

i'm going to bring up the cultural significance of this title and literary reference first. Don Quixote is a classical novel by Cervantes which is about a crazy dude who thinks he's a knight, and goes on weird adventures with his best friend. It's typically used as a symbol of following your dreams and breaking free from what people expect of you. In the context of the song its used as a symbol of following your dreams with Someone. once again this someone is given no gender indicators. "you say it's not worth it / been burned too many times / if your spine's receding / you can borrow some of mine / don't go and quit right now / cause i'd follow you through hell." "you say so many things / and not a word of it was true / if you're still in that state of mind / i'd still vacation inside of you / cause i think you're worth every minute / and every dime that i spend / i'd spend all my time fighting dragons / just to keep you alive and talking." it's about wanting to spend time with someone, wanting to be with them no matter what. and its also about how this person feels unreachable, like being with them would be a fairytail but the speaker Still Reaches for it. "your imaginations running wild / round your deceptive heart / this is my crusade / and you're the unreachable star / but i'm reaching." talking about this person being unreachable and unattainble. which isnt gay By Itself  but again combined with the other context. FRUIT BEHAVIOR.

another breakup song once again with no gender indicators, are you guys sensing a theme here? anyways this song is about someone cutting you off and then coming back suddenly wanting to talk again after breaking your heart. it has a sense of forbidden love, like this person Told the speaker they cant be together for Whatever Reason ;] and is now trying to come back and repair their mistake when the speaker is already hurt and reeling. "learn to live with decisions you make / i learned things from the break i can't forget / catch you doing drive-bys at 1 AM / it must kill you to know we can't be friends." "end of the summer you cut me off / i cut you out all the pictures i have." which this Isnt Gay By Itself. but bringing that phrase back with other context this is such a uniquely gay experience. being in love with someone and they cut you off Because theyre weirded out by that and then they try to come back, convince you it meant nothing.

5) The Secret Goldfish

my FAVORITE pencey song. this one has a lot. it's another breakup song about heartbreak and loss and im not even gonna dwell on the no gender indicators because yall see the theme now. it has themes of heartbreak and losing someone who is very close to you and having to let go of them and having to accept that this person cant be yours and you cant be with them. "land of the lost / i found myself in nothing / this time, promises broken find me / clutching to you for something / something that you're not / believing in what you say / it makes me lie awake at night / the truth, the truth is not what scares me / it's why you have to lie / all the time." here we see these themes of having to let someone go because they just Aren't The Same as you. "clutching to you for something / something that you're not." maybe like chasing after a straight boy and getting rejected? also the repetition of "heartbreak is forever" when you're young and gay losing that first person you felt some kind of love and attraction to can feel like the end of the world and can be a huge deal because of the lack of representation and guidance young gays get. and the themes of nothing lasting forever, the fact that gay people never get promised eternal love the same way straight people do.

6) 8th Grade

this song is the nail in penceys fucking coffin honestly. the rest of these songs have a lot of plausible deniability, just vague enough to maybe Not Be Gay. but framed in the context of 8th grade they all start to get a lil fruity. Im just gonna go through lyric by lyric for this one. "caught staring again / like a deer in the headlights / when you can't move fast enough / i take a hit for the team / pretty girl is blushing / i can't tell if she's disgusted / laughter starts to swell / someone gets the joke." this kid was staring at some cute boy ass and got caught and everyone is laughing at him for being gay. the "pretty girl" here is what most people think he's staring at but with the rest of the song it's obvious she's not the one he's looking at. "bells ring, i make my escape / helps a little, but doesn't save / beat downs a common thing / with us every day / maybe im just strange / cause i dont change schools / so maybe i like the abuse / or maybe i just like you." literally This is the nail in penceys fucking coffin. "maybe i like the abuse or maybe i just like you." this kid purposefully takes beatings from his bully who is Obviously male if you take into context the next verse. because he Likes Him. "maybe im just strange / cause i dont change schools" literally willingly taking beatings from his bully bc he has a crush. "another confrontation / you've got something to prove / your girl can't tell how tough you are / when you beat me up in the boys room." this just confirms that the subject of the song is a boy, and a tough macho boy with something to prove. maybe also hiding his own internalized homophobia through bullying? "well i made a big mistake / but i can't help who i like / this may not cost my life / but i am branded forever lame." LITERALLY ITS RIGHT IN YOUR FACE. "can't help who i like" "branded forever lame" do i even need to fucking explain this oh my god. he got outed as gay, he Can't Help Who He Likes and is now branded forever as "the gay kid." the rest of the song is general "im gonna get back at my bully" stuff but literally THIS. THIS is the song that brands all penceys other very vague songs as 100% verified super mega ultra gay.

7) 19

this song has a lot less, and is more about internal struggle than anything. but it is the only song with a "she" pronoun in it. but there is one thing i wanna mention. "I scream out loud / but no one hears a sound / i take my life with lack of sleep / i believe the things i feel / the things i see are fooling only me." this song is about not believing what the world shows you, believing what you think is true in your heart and what You feel. not what anyone else tells you. which is a gay experience. believing in yourself and your heart and your feelings, believing theyre right and theyre true and valid. Also this song has a significance in coming right after 8th grade on the album, going from being 13 to 19, from being unsure in your feelings and angry about the people who dont like you to lost and hopeless but somewhat grounded in yourself.

8) Trying To Escape The Inevitable

this song is about an abusive and toxic relationship, knowing you Need to escape it but being so infatuated with the person you literally cant. “i have this reoccurring dream / you make it hard for me to breathe / i gave you everything i could / i gave up everything i owned / and when you smile it’s not for me / you offer little sympathy / your grasp so far exceeds your reach / i wake up, this is not a dream.” “i have this reoccuring dream / where you admit that you’re not happy / i know that you will never leave / you’re here just to torment me.” which like again this isnt an exclusively gay experience but it is very interesting when framed that way. in that gay people are way more likely to throw themselves into abusive and toxic relationships because they dont feel like they can get anybody else. the repetition of “i know i should run” makes it seem like the speaker Knows he should get out but he just Cant because what if he never finds love again? and the little reprise in the middle “i have a new dream / and everything is perfect / the sky is pink, yellow, green, blue, and orange / and all the past has been forgotten / and we fell in love / and we fell in love / and we fell in love / and i fell into your trap.” implying that even if he escapes, even in his dreams he still falls for this person because he feels like he cant have anything else.

9) Lloyd Dobbler

another love song about wanting to have someone but not being able to because of Unspecified Forbidden Reasons. “why are you so far away / even when you’re standing next to me? / your eyes give you away / telling secrets your mouht don’t feel like talking.” falling in love with someone, maybe sensing that they like you too. that they Are Like You and that they have a Secret they dont want to vocalize. do i even need to explain it at this point? and in the chorus “That I’ll be your lloyd dobbler / with a boom box out in the street / and i’ll be there if you need someone / even if he isn’t me.” saying you’ll be there for someone even if that person isn’t you, also the use of Pronouns which is big for pencey prep. which yes the use of “even if he isnt me” could imply a straight girl ooorrr....Fruit Behavior. also this line “There’s a norman rockewll painting / of two kids sitting on a bench / it reminds me of all the stupid things / i’d like for us to share, but i dont care.” normal rockwell is a painter that paints traditionally “american” scenes. like the american ideal, that maybe he wants with this person. but he knows he cant have, but its stupid and domestic and he wants it but he Cant Have It because of FRUIT BEHAVIOR.

10) Florida Plates

another of my favorite pencey songs, and this one brings back those tragic “love but we cant have it” themes, except with a more somber tone. instead of being angry or resentful or spiteful in the face of adversity. its an Acceptance, of what they had and how good it was and how it just Cant Last. “kiss a mouth to open eyes / stall one last moment before goodbye / drive in different cars in different directions / never write all the letters full of good words, better intentions / it’s for the best although we don’t know it / paper words will cheapen the moments we shared / it’s better if i say nothing at all.” it’s about knowing you have to leave someone, even if having them in the moment is great they Can’t Stay and you can’t even talk or write about the moments you had. which do i even need to explain it at this point? forbidden love, not being able to have each other, not even being able to Talk about it. its a secret, and painful one but its beautiful while you have it. Conclusion alright!!! thank you so so much if you read all the way through that i Know it was long i Know it was a lot of repetition but i wanted to make my point. pencey prep has very big gay themes in their music. with forbidden love, letting go, heartbreak, keeping secrets, toxic realtionships. which none of it is gay on its own but in the context of: almost none of the songs having clear gender indicators and always speaking really vaguely about the subject and Eight Grade the “nail in the coffin song” you can see my point thank you and goodnight.
