Remaking the HIStory Franchise

For @heretherebedork who likes to challenge me (off the back of this post.) More fantasy remakes of BLs! 

I took this as a double dare: Who would fix it? is my main challenge. Because MUCH of the HIStory franchise is in need of fixing. But also, who would make it worse? This time, I took Taiwan out of the remake running (this is their franchise) but I got to put Korea in! He he, that means I have WATCHA to play with. This’ll be fun. 

HIStory My Hero  

Who gets it? Korea’s Hwang Da Seul 

Body swap, friends to lovers, university set, soft, sweet low heat. No side dishes. No triggers. But then the original is also not quite BL and not particularly romantic. Girl dies and her consciousness transfers into in the body of the boy who (maybe) had a crush on her boyfriend. She has a week to make her old boyfriend fall in love with her new body. I'm not a fan of body swap but I think I want Korea to try it on for size. I’d hand this one off to Hwang Da Seul partly because she picks really GOOD actors, and that’s required for body swap to work. I don’t feel she has to reuse a pair for it, though, and I’d be fine if she wanted to age up the characters. 

Who’d fuck it up? GMMTV, they flipping can’t handle body swap, I wish they’d stop trying.

HIStory Stay Away From Me 

Who gets it? 02 Productions in Vietnam 

University nerd's dad marries actor idol's mom and moves the now stepbrothers in with each other. It's a cohabitation romance with the stepbrothers trope on a classic popular/nerd, sunshine/tsundere pairing. It’s a perfect vehicle for Vietnam. They would add more and better kisses for a superior ending, plus good domesticity, and give it a bit more length. Bah Vinh hasn’t played an idol character yet (right?) and I think he would be VERY good in that roll. 

Who’d fuck it up? Japan. I don’t know why they can’t handle celebrity romances but they REALLY can’t (see Given & Love Stage). 

HIStory Obsessed 

Who gets it? The MoD Triage people in Thailand 

Uke obsessed with seme to the point of losing himself and his identity dies after being rejected, and then has a chance to reboot his life. He decides to save himself by never falling in love. But destiny is a bitch, and this time the seme becomes obsessed with him. I think mad good things could be done with this story line if it were extended out bu Thailand. It’s fun and complex. So I’m giving it to Thailand’s premier fun and complex peeps. Go forth and multiply! 

Who’d mess it up the most? Cheewin and COPY definitely. I shudder to think. 

HIStory 2: Right or Wrong

Who gets it? Japan, the studio who did Old Fashion Cupcake 

It's a teacher/student power dynamic, tsundere/sunshine pairing, plus cohabitation with themes of self acceptance and family domesticity. It's a slow burn but high heat (and that heat is good). The uke is out gay, the seme is unapologetically bi. Japan already loves a teacher student age gap pairing and this is right in their wheelhouse. They won’t shy away from the implications and I want them to confront their own social issues and restrictions with regards to gay marriage... which they would. I like the original, but I think this would be a whole lot better, actually. 

Who’d mess it up the most? Korea probubly, they can’t handle questionable content dynamics, they get to scared, teacher/student + gay would probubly break them. Although there is a part of me that wants to see them try... and squirm.  

HIStory 2: Crossing the Line 

Who gets it? WATCHA in Korea 

This is sports romance (volleyball) with a good boy/bad boy pairing is my favorite of the franchise. There no clear seme/uke. There's great kisses but it's medium heat. The side dishes are the stepbrother trope but they’re very tame, and there’s no other triggers in this BL. I have to give it to the studio that doesn’t fuck up, WATCHA. 

Who’d mess this one up the most? Easy, MAME. 

HIStory 3: Make Our Days Count 

AKA HIStory 3 The BL That Shall Not Be Named

Who gets it? It has to go to GMMTV. 

I say that knowing the best thing about the original was the authenticity of the heat levels, so it should go to Cheewin or MAME, BUT they’d fuck up the characters, so... GMMTV gets it. Purely on the grounds that they would fix that ending. (They don’t do sad BL.) Also they have a deep actor pool to pull from for the cast, I’d like Aof to direct so it retains its depth. It doesn’t have to be high school, I’d bump this one up to university and hand it off to a really seasoned team. Also I think the seme character MUST stay himbo, so EathMix can’t take on this show. It’s gotta go to someone who can do physical and emotional comedy, that’s why I chose Tay. Could he be opposite Gun for this? That’d be fun. I’ve always wanted them to play off each other. 

Who’d mess this one up the most? Obviously Wabi Sabi, they keep creating sad things these days, they’d just dwell in that stupid ending forever. 

HIStory 3: Trapped 

Who gets it? Japan’s Life: Love on the Line team. 

Look, I have been wanting a yakuza BL from Japan forever. I dithered in a BIG way on this one. Despite the mafia theme, there are actually very few triggers and it's full consent and quite sweet for how much they throw in sexy. Lots of little domestic moments too. The ending needs to be resolved though and it needs higher production values but from someone who will not fart around too much with the story. I thought long and hard about Korea, but Strongberry already tried and I just don’t think they are ready. 

Who’d fuck it up? Most of Thailand, frankly. It’s a marker of my mistrust these days that I couldn’t face handing this one off to Wabi Sabi. Once upon a time I might have. Vietnam definitely can’t do the production levels required. 

HIStory 4: Close to You 

Who gets it? Cheewin and COPY A BANGKOK 

There’s nothing wrong with the leads in this office set romance, but the side couple are stepbrothers as a grumpy/sunshine pairing, including obsession, dubious consent that went to the dark side. They need correcting and Cheewin has been really trying to correct for queer rep lately, so you know what? Let’s see what COPY could do with a proper office set romance. I mean Cheewin did do Why R U? and Cutie Pie there’s hope. 

Who’d fuck it up? Star Hunter, can you imagine?

Ted Lasso, the Roy/Keeley/Jamie triangle, and – dare I say it? –television history

No matter your preferred term for the throuple, OT3, or poly relationship on Ted Lasso, it’s worth appreciating.

The more I think about it, the more I believe that the creative team behind Ted Lasso is doing something with RoyKeeleyJamie that doesn’t exist in precisely the same way anywhere else. In my opinion — and with the disclaimer that my frame of reference is (of course) limited—what they’ve done here is incredibly unique and maybe even groundbreaking.

These declarations of mine aren’t premature or at all conditional on how explicitly “official” their relationship may or may not get to be in the season 3 finale. I say this from my current perspective after episode 3x11, because after that episode I feel that what they’ve been doing with this part of the story has been made abundantly clear.

When it comes to Roy Kent, Keeley Jones, and Jamie Tartt, it would’ve been very easy and even expected for the writers to fall into the trap of making them into a typical love triangle at any point. Yet they never did. People might ascribe the traditional “love triangle” label to the trio because it’s a familiar frame of reference, but as a term I feel like it’s not actually applicable to the story beats we’ve seen.

These characters have never been in any true rivalry motivated by jealousy, insecurity, or possessiveness in regards to one another’s relationships. By contrast, within their triangle and amongst all of their separate pairings, their common denominator has been mutual attempts at building respect, communication, and accountability. Roy and Jamie’s conflicts with each other predated and were never centered around their love for Keeley, and Keeley was never put in a position of having to choose between the boys. Keeley was allowed to care about both of them in different ways, maintaining different relationships with each of them on her own terms. None of them pretended they couldn’t all care about each other in some capacity while still acknowledging boundaries and variation in their relationships. And while this shouldn’t be a big deal or a surprise–especially because Ted Lasso is a show defined by second chances, found families, and endless variations of love–it’s still refreshing enough to warrant praise.

As part of that, because the writers didn’t rely on nor fear the typical contrived “love triangle” dynamic, all three of the characters’ stories were kept heavily intertwined. They live and work in the same spaces, and they care about each other in various ways, so of course they interact and share advice. Their individual arcs were then intentionally informed by the ways they learned to grow because of each other, intertwining them further.

While I don’t know for sure if the writers’ goal was to eventually approach them as an inseparable group, I suspect it wasn’t, based on a couple of quotes I’ve seen float around. That means that they may have seen the potential for the non-platonic “triangle,” chose to lean into it relatively quickly (the show is only 3 seasons!), and continued to build it so it feels organic and cohesive. That speaks volumes as to their talent and it’s also part of what makes this situation so unique.

Along those lines: Ted Lasso is a mainstream ensemble show with several storylines in play. It’s not solely or primarily about romance. It’s also not a “queer show,” meaning that queer storylines were not a central pillar of its premise, nor were they part of its original appeal to or promise to audiences.

Of course, there are now several queer storylines/characters in season 3 amongst the ensemble cast that have clearly been planned from the start, including Colin, Trent, Keeley, etc. That’s fantastic, and anytime a show doesn’t “start out” as blatantly queer but later makes a natural place for the development of queer characters within its wider story, it’s a huge win. It’s also great storytelling!

But rarely is that the case when it comes to polyamory. While there are several movies and shows that include it… most poly representation is within the context of an already radically queer story, or within the context of a story that’s solely about being polyamorous. Any non-monogamous relationships–or even the potential for them–are very rarely given casual, “normalized” inclusion amongst an ensemble, or treated like just another romance in the mix.

And yet… Roy, Keeley, and Jamie seemingly have been, with beautiful complexity. It's like seeing a real windmill for the first time.

This “triangle that symbolizes home” has been built as a three piece, slow burn, collective romance. Equal weight has been given to developing them as individuals while developing all of the ways they intersect and connect, with no combination falling by the wayside. Between Keeley/Jamie, Roy/Keeley, and Roy/Jamie, you can chart the trajectory of how they all grew to love each other and how they’re now coming together as a group towards the end. It all plays out with various levels of romantic motifs across the board, and–as if that isn’t already enough!–with added subtext through costuming/wardrobe, set details, framing, and music. It has been formed and shaped with great attention to detail, and of course with unbelievably beautiful acting choices that bring it to life. (Analyzing those details at length would require its own post.)

This sort of thing may exist in other media, but I’ve personally never seen anything like it before. I’ve certainly never heard of it happening in such a high-profile, widely-loved show like this.

Here, with one episode left, the equal setup of the three now feels complete and ready for a future. Roy and Keeley aren’t back together yet, so Jamie wouldn’t feel like an add-on if that is indeed where they take the story. Roy and Keeley haven’t even kissed on screen this season, in a way that feels deliberate (and anticipatory). And it’s now clear that the relationship struggles any 2 characters may have had as couples can be improved upon by adding the third person, so they’d all be fully supported in a throuple.

For example: Keeley helps them all to be more vulnerable and open while also being a problem solver. Roy’s steady, heartfelt, but no-nonsense encouragement builds them all up with confidence but not toxic pride. Jamie now wears his heart on his sleeve, bringing a level of fun and joy that’s incomparably him. If Keeley sometimes needs space, Roy and Jamie are clearly happy to be indefinitely tied together (sometimes literally). If Jamie or Keeley want to be the life of any party, they’ve got a partner for the scene so Roy doesn’t feel obligated to match that energy. Roy and Jamie relate through football as a specific kind of language, understanding that part of each other as only they can while Keeley cheers from the side. Each of them has taught the others new skills along the way.

If any of them now enter into new relationship territory, it sure seems like they’ll do it all together as a full set–and be stronger for it.

Feel free to call me a fool, but at this point I’m confident that at minimum they’re going to leave this story hinting at the three of them getting together off screen in the future. That’s the baseline I personally really wanted, and it’s more than I’d have previously dared to hope for.

In terms of what could happen on screen: Do I want them all to have a conversation about dating each other and/or kiss and/or be shown in bed together? Yes. Do I think at least one (if not all) of those things are going to happen in the season finale? After episode 3x11, I find myself nearly convinced we’re going to get SOMETHING of the sort. It feels like a thread that needs pulling (or a Chekhov’s gun that needs firing?) after Roy and Keeley’s conversation in Jamie’s room. It’s the next bit of natural and needed evolution for all of them.

Or, as Trent Crimm once said, “You’ve done this over three seasons. . . thousands of imperceptible moments, all leading to their inevitable conclusion.”

But am I counting on that inevitable louder conclusion? Will I be disappointed if it doesn’t happen? Do I think any of that explicit behavior has to happen for this poly relationship to be considered canon and have merit?

Not at all. 

That’s not how I choose to view media. Personally, I never play the unwinnable game of debating the ever-shifting goalposts of what constitutes “good representation.” Relatedly, I think the word “queerbaiting” is almost always misused and probably shouldn’t exist at all. And I’m tired of the lack of nuance in these discussions where people act like fictional queer relationships have to hit a certain level of “canon enough” in order to “count.” Many of those arbitrary goals seem to often be determined by whether or not ~all audiences~ can magically be convinced by the queer relationship’s seeming legitimacy. But queer stories aren’t made for the people who are oblivious to them at best or looking for reasons to disregard them at worst; at the end of the day, they’re made for queer people, as well as for anyone who has media literacy and an open mind.

If you ask me, RoyKeeleyJamie is already “canon.” Anything else we get now is just a bonus. And ultimately–after everything I outlined above–I am very aware of how unique this particular situation is, and how more explicitly going “all the way” with any queer dynamic (let alone polyamory) is still never a simple or easy task for creators to accomplish. Even in 2023.

However.

IF they do it?

If everyone involved in both creating this show and approving it (which is very key) had the sheer courage to go all the way with this storyline, in a way that most mainstream audiences won’t be able to ignore or deny without sounding stupid?

Well.

Then they’d better get a great deal of overdue praise and acknowledgement. And I will be loudly losing what’s left of my mind in the best possible way.

(I had to write this now just in case I’m incoherent after the finale.)

Either way: I am FLOORED by what we’ve gotten up to this point! I’m thrilled! I’m having a great fucking time!

And I’m very, very grateful to the team that’s put together such a beautiful triangular love story for our enjoyment.

It truly feels like it’s one of a kind.

Jyn Week Day 1: Home

I wasn't sure I was gonna post this, because it's really not my best work. But then again, with the way my brain has been lately not much is! And I wanted to participate and show our girl some love so. Fighting through the perfectionist in me and here's this little thing <3

Though the Rebels had breathed new life into the cave upon their arrival, the network of tight tunnels and sprawling caverns that made up Echo Base had a history that stretched back to a time long before the war. There were stars younger than the stone walls that surrounded them, buried beneath layers of ice so thick, it was unlikely the galaxy would ever uncover the secrets they contained.

It had not taken Jyn long to begin exploring the area, seeking hidden nooks and crannies to which she might escape. Within a week, she had formed a sprawling mental map, memorized the quickest routes to every exit, marked the nearest spaces to duck to when Draven was after her about her latest display of ‘irresponsible/reckless/unacceptable’ behavior–or, when she simply needed quiet. (Which seemed to happen more and more with each passing day spent trapped in this hellhole.)

Tonight, she was bundled in her warmest gear: every thermal layer she possessed, two sweaters, one parka, her hat and scarf, gloves, and four socks pulled one after the other till she could barely squeeze her feet into her boots, much less feel them. 

Clumsiness was the price to pay when you wanted to be up and about at this hour on Hoth–that, or frostbite. It was why, for the most part, no one on Echo Base left their beds after sundown unless they absolutely had to. In temperatures this cold, you’d have to be out of your mind to willingly leave the relative comfort and warmth of your room without very good reason.

Apparently, Jyn was out of her mind, because she’d woken from a dream–the one where the fires of Scarif blinded her one minute, and she was trapped in the cold bunker all alone the next–and crawled out from beneath her blankets. She’d dressed in the dark, moving by instinct more than anything, her skin itching and heart racing as the walls seemed to press closer and closer. Before she’d fully realized what she was doing, she had found herself fumbling by the dim yellow cast of a lantern to a place well-beyond the boundaries of Echo Base.

It would have been all too easy to take a wrong turn–and subsequently freeze to death trying to find her way back–but her body had taken care of her when her mind could not. Before too long she had arrived at a vaguely familiar antechamber, small and circular, with smooth, curving walls.

As she sat and leaned her back into their hard surface, it felt as though she were being held in the palm of some ancient, mysterious being. She took in her surroundings like someone waking up from a dream. Why had her instincts guided her here? 

Then she felt it: air, fresh air; the barest of hints of it brushing across the tip of her nose and suddenly it all made sense. She closed her eyes and drew it deep into her lungs–holding it for a moment with the gratitude of someone reuniting with a long lost friend–before releasing a slow, careful breath. It lingered in the air before her–the ghost of a scared and lonely girl—a swirling cloud of mist, glowing purple. 

Heart in her throat, Jyn lifted her eyes, seeking the source of the strange light. High above her, the chamber’s ceiling of ice and rock gave way, revealing an incredible sweep of night sky, dancing with color. Wind whistled across the opening of the cave…waves whispered upon a black-sanded shore…

“What are they, Mama?”

Her mother’s amused hum tickled at her back. “The Force paints a path home for those that are lost, my love.”

Jyn squirmed beneath the blanket, trying to find her father’s face amidst the orange, flickering shadows of the bonfire. “What are they really, Papa?” 

Mama’s head rested beneath his chin, his arms wrapped around them both, a shield from the wind. He gave her a smile; her favorite kind, the kind he gave her when he asked if she could keep a secret. “You don’t believe your mother?”

Jyn didn’t think her question had anything to do with belief, she simply wanted to know. Mama often told her stories about the Force; stories about love and anger, light and dark, and the threads that tied the world together–just like the ones her favorite blanket was made of. But Papa told her stories too; stories like what kind of soil made the plants on the farm grow, or why her skin turned red after too much time in the sun, or how to fix Stormy when his arm fell off. Mama’s stories were stories she saw and felt on the inside, while Papa’s were ones she held in her hands. But they were both a part of her, pieces she carried with her wherever she went. 

She studied the sky again, following the splashes of purple and green and blue as they wove their way between clusters of stars. She wondered what it would feel like to stand on one of the rippling bands of light; tried to imagine stepping one foot after the other across the horizon as her mother had described. Maybe it would be warm, like sand in the sun, or maybe it would be more like waves lapping at her feet, cold and tingly. 

“A scientist’s daughter through and through,” Mama laughed. “I recognize that look in her eyes…”

Jyn wasn’t sure what exactly she meant by that, but she tore her gaze away from the lights in the sky and turned towards her father instead, ready for his answer.

His skin shimmered green, then blue, and back again, the same colors as the ones that hung in the air above them. “The path your mother spoke of is made of particles, shed by our planet’s suns.”

Jyn frowned at this. “But it’s nighttime.”

“Just because we cannot see something, does not mean it is no longer there,” Papa explained, reaching over to tug the blanket back over her shoulders. “Tonight, the aurora reminds us that the suns have not left us, and they will rise again tomorrow.”

She twisted to face Mama again. “So the suns are the Force?”

“The Force is the suns,” her mother murmured reverently, “and the wind, and the waves, and the sand beneath you. It’s the salt on your tongue when you breathe in and…” she smiled as she poked Jyn’s nose with the tip of her finger, “that means it’s a part of you, and me, and your Papa too.”

Jyn settled into her parent’s arms again and shut her eyes, feeling for the Force her mother spoke of. She wasn’t sure what it was supposed to feel like. 

But she thought there might be some truth to her parents’ words, because though she could not see them anymore, she could sense them there beside her. The comfort of her mother’s heartbeat under her ear, the warmth of her father’s breath as he bent to press a kiss to the top of her head. 

And if she were to find herself lost and standing amidst the aurora, she felt certain this was where they would bring her.

The colors of the sky began to blur and run together. Jyn wiped roughly at her eyes, urging tears away before they could turn to frost upon her cheek. Hoth was more than a far cry from the beaches of Lah’mu, yet she felt closer to it now than she had in a long time.

“Beautiful,” a voice murmured, echoing quietly off the stone around her. 

Jyn started, turning towards the rasp of footsteps. “Cassian…” Leave it to the spy to find her in the middle of a labyrinth in the dead of night.

“How long have you been standing there?” she asked warily, taking one last self-conscious swipe at her face with the sleeve of her coat. 

“Not long,” he answered, lingering at the entrance to the cavern.

But long enough… Jyn figured. She heaved a short sigh and returned her gaze to the aurora, an ache in her chest. “There were lights like this on Lah’mu,” she murmured, an explanation of sorts–though Cassian had not asked for one. 

He ducked past the icicle that hung in from the tunnel’s opening and silently came to sit beside her, his shoulder brushing against her own. Though it barely made a difference in a cold this numbing, Jyn found herself drawing comfort from the warmth of his body beside her. 

“How’d you find this place?” he asked softly. 

She glanced at him, but he was looking at the lights above, granting her a reprieve from the weight of his stare. “How’d you find me?” she countered. 

The corner of his mouth lifted slightly, but his eyes were serious when they landed on her again. “I went to your room and you weren’t there. For a moment I thought…” he shook his head and took a sudden interest in his boots.

“You thought I’d left?” 

“I didn’t know what to think. I checked the infirmary next.” There was an odd strain to his voice, something she couldn’t quite place. “No one had seen you there either, so I headed towards the perimeter,” a small smile crossed his lips, “I’ve noticed you wander to the edges of Base when you’re trying to avoid Draven.”

“Of course you did,” Jyn remarked. “Then what?”

“I followed the light…” 

“And it led you here…” The memory of her mother’s story–still fresh in Jyn’s mind–began to mingle with words Cassian had once spoken to her. The kyber crystal she wore seemed suddenly heavier than it had a moment ago, a hand resting over her heart. 

She thought of Bodhi, Chirrut, Baze, even K2. Of all the people who she had gotten to know because of the Rebellion. People who had her back. People who might not understand all of her, but who accepted her nonetheless.

“Hoth is the first time we’ve really slowed down since Scarif,” Cassian said, ignoring her sudden glance at the mention. “I know it can be hard to adjust to life in the Rebellion.”

A tentative smile tugged at the corner of her lips. “Yeah,” she replied, catching a ripple of light and shadow as it wandered across his face. “I've been feeling lost…but I think I’m beginning to find my way.”

MY GIRL AAHHH SHES BACK!! okay SO. inkopolis square. but dead. its a bleached coral forest basically. there seems to be this sorta of,, electricity thing going on throughout the trailer that we can see on the lobby tower. overall looks dope as hell

FOR BOTH GENDERS!! okay first of all what are those ink tanks? sorta looks like those IV bags. same with the outfit,, the shoes sorta look like casts and the clothes look like some sort of sensory deprivation tank suit. a lot of medical vibes going on from the white color and everything. i love it

PEARL BOT! no questions about it, marina definitely made this for her (the wives :D) its interesting that pearl isn't actually there (marina isn't either, ill talk more about my theory later) but she can still talk to us through this robot. also love how marina added the sliding eyebrows to make it more expressive LMAO

i love how we can ride pearl bot as well. i think this will be an important feature, wonder if we can control her when this happens :O

okay what are these? i think the first one on the left is a mem cake, not really sure what the others are though

okay im seeing a theme of electricity and we can see in the background it sort of glitching, so i think side order might a simulation or something. the huge orb in the middle is definitely some fucked up zapfish (where you end the level im assuming), but its glitching and then a ton of the skeleton creatures come out of it

it looks like a ton of dead fish (dedf1sh...?),, we havent seen any octolings that you need to fight yet so these seem like the new enemies replacing them for side order. though i do wonder if we'll ever encounter an evil octoling (or inkling or salmonid, who knows) also are these an entire new species? or just some simulation creature

i also love how instead of ink, its the same electricity we've been seeing used to summon the weapons. this whole realms creation definitely has something to do with marina since its side order and its super technologically advanced

1. It's about pirates

The perfect timing and delivery, the combination of the old setting and new realities, the general idiocy of situations will bring you to the edge of tears. Do you really need this? 3. It has a brilliant cast

You won't find a show with such an ethnically diverse cast anywhere else. Yes, this is a show about pirates who spread fear on the shores of the West Indies and were persecuted by the British Navy, but your fellow aristocrat from Barbados speaks with a New Zealand accent. The scariest pirate in history not only also speaks with a New Zealand accent, he is also Māori. Your ordinary pirate crew has a cannibal, a weirdo with a cleaver, a killing machine and a scribe among others. You'll just be constantly distracted by thinking how well the actors nailed their roles.

4. It makes you believe in love again

You think you're watching a silly little comedy about pirates, but then you start realizing that you believe in love again. How could that happen?

The two main characters met when they needed each other the most. The terrible pirate Blackbeard - a living legend - has lost the will to live. Wealthy landowner Stede Bonnet escaped from the trap of aristocratic life. The spark that ran between them, in a favorable, open and trusting space, turned into deep feelings. One didn't realize their power, the other didn't realize them at all, but both were willing to sacrifice everything for each other. Do you really need to believe in love again? In this economy?

5. It's an ongoing series

The first season was realized last year. The second season is expected this spring. The plot can take any turn. This is not a safe watching of an already ended show. For example the real pirates in the real world, aka Stede No-Middle-Name Bonnet and Edward Teach Or Thatch, parted and both died in 1718. Literally a year after the events described in the first season. No one wants to watch a show where the main characters who are in love with each other die in the end.

These are five reasons why you shouldn't watch this show if you don't want to constantly think about pirates.

So glad it wasn’t just me who noticed the lack of Eddie in that promo 😑 and the only shots focused on him were like old footage from s2 and 3. None of his s5 breakdown or hostage situation badassery or May Day cool moments (like smashing the glass with the fire extinguisher), not even any of his sassy faces from s6. And not a single line of dialogue from him. My motivation to watch s7 dropped about 10 points. The shot of buck and death doula didn't help either 😑

I noticed the lack of Eddie immediately then I watched the promo again to make sure I didn't miss him but I realized I was right the first time. I was pissed they didn't include any of Eddie's badassery from all the seasons he's been on the show. Let's check notes on how Bad Ass Cool Under Pressure "Sexy Eddie Diaz" is for a minute.

First and foremost, Eddie Diaz is the best dad there is. He's been raising Chris and he sacrifices EVERYTHING for him!

He removed a live grenade from a man's leg and everyone who doesn't remember should realize EDDIE WAS GOING TO GO INTO THE AMBULANCE BY HIMSELF!

(I can't find the GIF I made of him doing the damn thing but if anyone wants to see it, they can watch 2x1 to see sexy Eddie do it because he's the one who KNEW THE ORDINANCE.)

The man was trapped in a well and swam to safety on his own while the team was above ground trying to figure out what to do to save him.

He was shot by a sniper.

He was held hostage by an escaped convict.

He had a mental breakdown and went to therapy to get better.

He climbed a 70-foot ladder to rescue Buck after he WAS CATAPULTED OFF THE BASE OF THE TRUCK WITHOUT BEING HARNESSED IN!

But the season 7 promo didn't include any of that.

What else does Eddie have to do to get some damn respect?

It was my main issue with season 6 and it looks like they're going to repeat history and it appears Past will be Prologue for them because they continue to ignore Eddie, Bobby and Chimney. They weren't in the promo that much either but you know who was, Buck's ridiculously short-term love interest ND who's been around for like 2 minutes. It's season 5 all over again, ND is the new TK and I'm not here for it.

They didn't even show Karen, Denny or that much of Ravi in the promo. Or Josh or Linda and these ARE ALL RECURRING CHARACTERS WHO'VE BEEN ON THE SHOW FOR YEARS!

I'm so sick of this BS. They never treat Eddie right and they've been sidelining him for too long. And for those who always holler, "Eddie had a big storyline in season 5" the amount of screen time he receives shouldn't have anything to do with that and if we're being HONEST, all of Eddie's scenes are made to be about Buck and his reaction to Eddie being hurt. Also, Eddie's scenes are usually crammed into the last 5 minutes of the episode and are rarely given the attention they deserve.

HE'S A MAIN CHARACTER BUT THEY KEEP SIDELINING HIM! But they sure don't have a problem giving Buck a lot of recurring characters for his gazillion storylines. Hell, he had 7 in season 6 alone but all they gave Eddie was some raggedy dating storyline and set him up with a chick who's more in love with her brother. 🙄

It would have been better if they would have included ONLY THE MAIN CAST AND LEFT ND OUT OF IT. SHE SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN INCLUDED AND I'LL KEEP SCREAMING IT AND NO ONE IS GOING TO STOP ME!

FREE EDDIE DIAZ FROM 9-1-1'S RIDICULOUS SIDELINES AND GIVE HIM THE SCREEN TIME HE DESERVES.

So if Crowley was Levan...

Why would he be *gestures at him* the way he is now? I think that's the general roadblock to this theory, which is so understandable. The Levan/Revan (how is his name spelled) we know of so far is loyal, dependable, and truly in love with Mallenoa, as its the only way for a dragon's egg to hatch. There's so little we actually know of the TWST universe, so we could be blindsided by any answer haha. But using what we know so far, I want to risk a little guess:

Overblot.

A genius post once mentioned how Crowley's mask and gloves (that he still wears in his vacation outfit) are accessories that would cover overblot markings, like ink on his hands or face. Another detail I noticed are Crowley's lips. of course, it could be makeup or a fae feature, but I've begun to doubt it. Malleus, for example, has noticeably darker lips, but not to the point that they're super noticeable on his model. But Crowley's lips are ink black- that same type of black that has been present on several Overblot victims.

But a very noticeable change that overblot victims have are their personalities. It's like the worst aspects of themselves, or their suppressed desires, come out and magnify themselves tenfold. It consumes their original personality, and as we learned from Styx, the blot eats them up until there's nothing left. However, there's very little known about overblot, and the potential of Fae magic in general.

This, added with the fact that in rare cases, phantoms can blend in direbeasts, and how Grim has thousand-year-old magic cast on him (currently unknown if its a blessing or a curse), I have an absolute insane crack theory to suggest:

Grim was Crowley's phantom.

Yes yes absolute nonsense I know oavfjkbsd. We know Grim is currently eating the black overblot stones, which will probably make him the phantom he's theorized to become. But why then, was extremely powerful magic cast on him a THOUSAND years ago? Combining this with Crowley's potential overblot markings, I'm thinking that Crowley managed to force his own phantom out of him, sealing it away with magic- OR had someone else seal it.

Again- STYX knows so very little about overblot despite their advanced technology. Pretty much anything is possible, especially when there's a potentially powerful fae involved. But this part of the theory is kinda optional, just because a thousand years wouldn't line up with the timeline akcjbvsk. Of course, Idia could've been exaggerating, but the Grim theory is already a bit much haha

Another edit: Another big brain genius comment mentioned how the thousand-year-old magic could also refer to a SPELL thats a thousand years old, so the timeline could still be accurate. This makes a lot of sense, because the transcription of magic and history vary A LOT throughout the kingdoms, and extremely little is known about fae in general. It would make sense that even STYX wouldn't know an ancient fae spell.

Edit: An absolutely genius comment mentioned how Grim managed to open MC's coffin. Crowley says no one has ever opened the coffin before he opened it for them, and he's been the headmaster for at least 100 years. If Grim was a part of Crowley, he would have the ability to open the coffin by himself! Thank you for this comment <3

According to Book 7, Levan was constantly praised by Mallenoa, for stuff that really didn't deserve it. Yet was loyal and dependable, to the point Lilia dedicated a long time to search for him. But as we know, Overblot changes the personality significantly- or rather, magnifies what was already there.

If Crowley managed to suppress the majority of his Overblot state and seal his own phantom away, he still wouldn't be the same person he was before. He never cured himself of his overblot like the other TWST characters- he's still trapped in a limbo. Although he's not in a senseless rampage, the worst aspects of himself overtook the person he used to be, becoming greedy, shifty, self-serving. I've heard popular theories of Overblots being tied to the Deadly Sins, and we could even say that Crowley's is Vainglory: Excessive boasting, excessive self-love and the desire to be loved, even if it isn't deserved.

To sum it all up, I think Levan/Revan overblotted some time soon after he left Mallenoa and the egg- perhaps a certain battle was too much for him, and never returned. Somehow, his phantom was torn from him, but lingering effects from the overblot essentially wiped the original person he used to be. Crowley is very sus and seems to be up to something, but I have no idea what. But if he's been in that state for this long, it's possible that he could never return to being Levan.

Edit: I also want to add how Crowley says "fear not the power of darkness" in the opening. I think this opening sequence has a lot of importance and has a lot of foreshadowing, But notice how he says "darkness." It's kind of a running joke in the TWST universe how all the villains are treated like the good guys. Everyone thinks their actions are just, they never treat their powers or actions as 'evil' or 'dark.' But if Crowley overblotted- and was somehow tempted by its power, he may acknowledge its dark and forbidden powers and is attempting to harness it

ANyway im an absolute clown and will remain this way until my silly crack theorists are crushed by canon haha

I mean out of everything in Hbomberguy’s new video, I think the thing about James Somerton that just irks me the most is just… he’s a queer man who is so lazy and self absorbed that he cannot take the time to even learn about the queer history and media he is presenting.. about his own history!

I just! Look, with all the other creators I understand the laziness —they’re all just churning out content as fast as they can (save for internet historian cos he posts pretty infrequently), none of them care about the games and films they’re reviewing, about MLM’s and shitty corporations or about guys getting trapped in caves. They don’t care y’know, it’s easier to disrespect the sources they’re stealing from if they have no emotional attachment to the topics.

But James is gay.. he’s a queer man… he is apart of this community, I mean not to excuse his shitty misogynistic rants (cos they’re shitty and there’s no excuse for them) but that hatred comes from somewhere, Harris joked that “some straight woman hurt him” and like… I wouldn’t be surprised if James genuinely has felt pushed aside and forgotten because of his identity as a gay man….. but like if that’s the case then he understands queer erasure, he has experienced it firsthand and fucking… it’s incredibly disappointing to see him plagiarise queer voices on such a massive scale!

But idk. I originally found James Somerton because I was watching video essays about queer history and queer media analysis — y’know, actively going out there to learn my history and how it affects media in the present — James can’t even be fucked watching the shows he’s talking about. What is Arthur? Who is Mako?? Wtf is a Shonan??? Calling Becky Albertalli a straight woman, misgendering cast members in Owl House and Shera because (and I severely hope this is the case! Though at this point nothing would surprise me) he assumes they are all straight women, the whole thing with Disney’s gay nights and gay days… these are all such basic, simple facts that anyone could learn by looking at a fucking Wikipedia article (or in the case of mispronouncing Mako’s name.. just watching a single clip from the show).

It just really goes to show how little he actually cares about the content he’s making.. his videos aren’t passionate video essays, it’s content, views, money, sponsorships, it’s taking the 3 or 4 articles he read when he typed “movie gay” into google and making them look flashy and professional with pretty lighting so he can just shut out all the voices he doesn’t want to hear (actual queer people.. and I guess one right wing nut head) and make a quick buck off the content they worked hard to make!

Anyway. Top tier video from Hbomberguy as per usual. Im fucking mad but hey! At least I got an epic list of new YouTubers to check out and like a *shitload* of articles and books and documentaries I can go watch :)

Pit Babe - Ep 13

I don't have much to write about this, because with the exception of Way and his potential partners, nothing else really interested me in this series. And it's good that people who know the novel were throwing spoilers left and right without warning, because thanks to this I could mentally prepare for what will happen to Way 😶 Thanks to the fact that Way in this episode just stood there, then jumped, and then died, making it all about Babe anyway, and thanks to spoilers, his death didn't really affect me. It was oddly funny tho, when I thought wistfully again how great Pavel and Nut are together and how I wish they were together as a pair (this is my unfulfilled ship in this series). I watched for a bit after that scene, hoping that maybe Way had somehow survived, hehe, but it was a vain dream 🤡 I honestly chuckled in disbelief when PeteWay was reduced to Pete's little sadness and a montage of some 4 of their scenes, and when I realized that they didn't even have Kenta there to mourn his brother. Tbh I skipped through the rest of the episode, and since I wasn't interested in the rest of it in the first place, that was the end of my adventure with Pit Babe 🥳 Despite knowing the spoilers, I had quite high hopes that Way would survive, because he was actually VERY popular in the Pit Babe fandom, and killing off a fan favorite is always a risky move. Way could have been punished for what he did in many ways, he could have left the team, cut off contact with Babe, left the country, anything. Even go to jail, like in History 3: Trapped! And yet they chose something so final. Nobody even called an ambulance for him....

I liked that it was Kenta who ended The Tony problem, and that he wasn't overwhelmed by his own actions, didn't lose control and stopped Tony when he tried to hit him. It was actually my fav part of this ep. (and the whole Winner and The Boys scene lol) As I understand it, Kenta didn't have any more scenes after that? Even to cry over Way? Am I wrong? I ask, because maybe he did appear after all, and I have missed him by skipping scenes.

If you are a Charlie fan, don't read this part: Even though I'm allergic to Charlie and CharlieBabe, I forced myself to watch their scenes at the beginning because I was curious how Babe would deal with the fact that Charlie was alive, he lied to him in a most fundamental way, broke his heart in the worst possible way, sending him into mourning and a destructive need for revenge. Babe handled it with flying colors like a model grief stricken patient 👌 Can't help but wonder, why there was a ENTIRE episode about the grieving Babe when he acts now like Charlie came back safe and sound from visiting his mean family during Christmas. I don't know if I could be with someone who actively chose the most cruel way to hurt me but "for my own god", I certainly couldn't just forgive it, but that's just me 🤷‍♀️ Babe was used, abused, hurt, never asked for his opinion, for what HE wanted by everyone around him, over and over again, and everyone knows it and everyone continues to use him and hurt him because they know they CAN and there won't be any consequences. When Charlie, beaming happily, announced the reason for faking his death and traumatizing Babe, and Babe was liked, oh ok, I thought to myself, haha, ok, guys, you know what, I actually envy you this simple life of yours. This scene confirmed only one thing for me: yep, Charlie and this pairing irritate me just as much now as at the beginning 😏

I don't know if I understood correctly, Jeff had a vision and knew that Way was going to die? As I recall, he tried to stop his previous visions from becoming reality, and now he did nothing? Can someone confirm this for me or have I missed something here?

So. PeteWay and PeteKenta have carried this series for several last episodes, these ships have been heavily promoted by the series and the show's cast. The ending of these ships with Way's quick death, which is not even about him but about Babe and the disappearance of Pete and Kenta from the plot, in my opinion, is an insult to their fans who have invested their time, energy and emotions in this series (this is not about me, I mean all those people whose hard work I furiously reblogged, I love you besties). It sort of looks like baiting now , I thought Thai BL series of all were above that 😄
