Hi there, it's your Secret Santa :) Hope you had a wonderful week! Two questions for today: 1) When reading a longer story, do you have a preferred chapter length? 2) What did you think of Andor (the TV show)? What was your favourite story arc?
Hello again!
1. Not particularly? I trust the author to know what’s up lol. Most often I find I like a 20k words with ~5 chapters sort of mid-length oneshot sort of thing. Like it has spaced out beats so that I can take a break between chapters if needed, but overall it’s a singular story, if that makes sense. But I’ve also read 20+ chapter fics that update with 2-5k words every week or so. The fic always dictates that kind of thing for me lol.
2. My feelings toward Andor are…complicated. Which I think is a familiar sentiment in the fandom.
Like, I wanted more Cassian Andor, and I got it, and there are some really great pieces of story and writing in there. The score is absolutely incredible. I hope it makes it into at least a couple of Emmy categories.
(Particularly I watched Luther: The Fallen Sun right around when No Way Out aired, and Andy Serkis has some damn RANGE this year and he deserves some supporting credit for sure for that or Andor.)
The cinematography, direction, and set design is INCREDIBLY unique for modern Star Wars. The choice of not using The Wall and doing as much practical set construction as possible SHOWS. It has an intimacy I think the new movies strayed away from, and it benefits what Andor as a show is trying to do. Not to mention that the RO/Rebelcaptain fandom has feasted on scraps for like 5 years and we actually got a lot to play with from the show. (When/If Cassian says Jyn’s name in s2 I will need to be hospitalized ❤️)
But. The Kenari/Kassa thing. The Maarva and Clem “adoption” situation. Some lack of decent reputation. It’s not really my place to elaborate on some of it as a white person, but I’m keeping up with those conversations in the fandom and I find myself agreeing with a lot of them.
Have I proposed AU ideas about Maarva meeting a RO!Lives team with Cassian? Sure. Do I think the way people are writing Cassian’s POV on the canon is really interesting? So far, hell yeah.
As usual, I’m willing to deal with the sandbox I’ve been given and play around in it, but I do think there’s room for improvement, and I’m an OG Rebelcaptain fan, so I’m always down for anyone that chooses to ignore the rewriting of Cassian’s Festian history. I’ll pretend the show doesn’t exist any day of the week and ride whatever vibes the author is putting down.
But as for favorite story arc, I did really enjoy the prison arc (and the kick in the ass of Cassian building the thing that kills him, because we love an awful full circle moment.)
Also, the beginnings of Rebellion Intelligence! I think Mon gets a bad rap sometimes when it’s like…she and Bail literally clawed this whole thing out of nothing. The Padme BFFs Club had a bunch of credits and a hope and eventually saved the galaxy by being true to what they always believed was right. They rule imo.
Also, my favorite scene is the end where Cassian is like “kill me or recruit me bitch” kebdnsn his eyes are so SAD and WET that’s my poor little meow meow spy 🥹

Hey Sab! I saw your tags talking about how you'd be open to having a conversation about your stance on aging up minor characters, rather receiving blatant hate. Can you explain why you think it's okay then? I'll be honest with you, I'm of the stance that it's wrong. But if you're open to having a discussion, I'd like to hear what you have to say about it, and where you're coming from.
hi friend, first I want to thank you for your very respectful ask — and for feeling comfortable enough to come and ask me about it! I completely respect your opinion and it’s valid— I’ll explain a little what my perspective is on this is—but first:
For others: this is not an invitation for people to come into my inbox and attack me, this is not me opening people up to tagging me in negative posts or messaging me bullshit—if you don’t agree with me, totally fine! if you don’t want to see my posts, just block me. You can have your opinion without feeling as if it’s an attack on you — just as I don’t view yours as an attack on me.
anyway back to the point:
for myself, writing is very little about writing from my perspective, usually it’s about taking an idea and spinning it into a story. the way I write my fics is honestly not much different than I write my own books — except the main character (in this case, reader) is not described much and has a more flexible personality / background. i never self insert myself into stories and even reading fanfiction, it’s more for the story than anything else. just to give some context for my writing process.
I personally would never write a fic about a character is underage engaging in adult acts in fanfiction, that’s just my personal preference. I enjoy writing characters who are older — usually college age and up. I don’t really enjoy writing romance that involves high school or younger, because media is saturated with that (re: every teenage romance show in existence — riverdale, teen wolf, etc). but this is about taking a character (who in this present day would be of age) and placing them in a setting where they would be of age, with other characters who are of age and, in my fic’s case, the exact same age.
I don’t see a problem with taking a character and imagining what they are like older — they are fictional, they do not exist, they do not have rights, they don’t even have a consciousness in any way— and placing them in an environment where they are older and do things that older people do. I see no difference in this and than an author doing a timeskip and showing what the characters are like when they are older. I assume wouldn’t have a problem with this if we ever get designs or a timeskip in JJK, like how the haikyuu fandom did. There’s also a difference between that in RPF, which I’m not a fan of, and aging up real people who are minors — that’s a whole different story since those people actually exist. I understand people’s outrage and want to protect minors from these depictions of them — but I don’t understand why in the case of fictional characters where they don’t exist in a vacuum, AUs exist where people literally make them into eternal beings, monsters, royalty, etc — why it’s a problem to put them in a universe where they are of age and have grown up and get to live normal lives as adults, including engaging in adult acts. Because we see this all the time done in media and also we see minors depicted to engage in adult acts in media today — in books, TV, movies, etc. while I’m not okay writing fiction (fics or not) about that, we cannot lie and say it doesnt happen every day.
now this also leads into censorship in literature and media, which is a major issue all over the world, including the USA (where I live). obviously some things in literature are NEVER okay in real life — but if we start censoring certain things because they aren’t okay in real life, what will come next? we can’t show murder because it’s not okay irl? we can’t show assault because it’s not okay irl? some of these things yes, shouldn’t be depicted gratuitously in fiction, for no reason, but at the same time, once we start drawing this line, it becomes a slippery slope. soon, we can’t show violence at all in fiction — which sometimes it’s necessary for the story you’re telling. for some others, depicting these acts in fiction is a safe way for them to process their trauma — dark romance fiction in general has seen a rise, especially on TikTok, and I think we all have read or seen things that characters have done in a tv show or book or fic where we’re like maybe that’s hot in that fictional setting, but if someone real said that to me, I’m calling the police (see the trend on TikTok of people quoting fictional men saying ridiculous things that have people kicking their feet but in real life would have you putting them in jail). but fiction is a safe way to explore these things without any danger. and that’s okay!
also censorship is used as a dangerous tool to make people ignorant and it’s easy to draw a line where violence shouldn’t be depicted to ‘let’s ban these books because they depict violence but also other things we don’t want people learning about’ — like the book ban that plagues the USA — from books about genocide, slavery, etc.
I think fiction should be a place to explore ideas, even ones that are uncomfortable. And that doesn’t mean I’m saying that means its okay for pedophiles to write creepy things about underage girls. I think we can all agree that’s not okay and that’s a straw man’s argument at best because we’re not talking about that. We’re talking about aging up a fictional character and placing them in an environment with other like aged characters.
Are we going to stop people from writing murderers in fics / literature because we’re afraid it will cause them to murder? We have to be able to distinguish between what is reality and fiction — just because I watched a show about a fictional killer, doesn’t mean I’m going to go murder people. If other people can’t, then they shouldn’t be reading fiction and should be seeking professional help.
For the context of my yuji fic that’s been catching a lot of heat because of this, it’s a childhood best friends to lovers fic. it’s a reader who grew up with yuji, came to college and ends up in a friends with benefits with him, only for her to fall for him. The actual act of sex is just used as a plot device — the point of the story is them falling in love, and reader seeing yuji in a different light. People who are in college have sex (for the most part) it’s a part of adult life and growing up (again for the most part).
overall, we’ve all seen this discourse time and time again — and it’s just a matter of preference at this point. this is why people have tags and warnings — if you don’t like it, just block the person or don’t read it. it’s as simple as that. people are never going to agree on this issue. and everyone is entitled to their own opinion as long as it’s not hurting anyone or themselves. and if all of this sticks to the fictional world, I don’t see a problem
I completely respect your right to have your own preference/opinion on this, and I hope you can do the same for me! thank for being so respectful!
(Also others who disagree with me, just block me. Don’t send me asks, don’t send me hateful messages, don’t try to argue with me, don’t tag me in rude posts — just block me or ignore the post).
this is going to be my last post on this issue. I don’t like to make this blog about discourse. I hate discourse. This is my hobby. It’s for fun. If I wanted to have an argument, I’d go pick a fight on twt. so please don’t bother. I like the discussion, it’s important. But I don’t want to argue pointlessly.

KEZ MY DARLING TY 💖💖
12. Do you outline your fics? If yes, how detailed are your outlines? How far do you stray from them?
For my long form fics I do!! I’m currently working on my RivKo mainfic outline (it needs a complete overhaul), and my RToB outline! Happiness will have an outline, and so will the small town horror fic.
I tend to do VERY thorough outlines with pinned moments of symbolism/significance, but I purposefully keep the passages butt ugly and plot-movement dense. That way I can get into writing and just scream through the scenes bc I don’t have to pause and think about laying down tracks for the scene, it’s already there and I don’t have to figure out logic.
I do sometimes tend to stray when I get into it and I feel like a moment needs more fleshing out—for example, in the RivKo long fic there’s a cooking scene between König and arguably the most plot important character outside of him and Rivka, and originally it was supposed to be one third of a chapter. But it became a turning point of the entire plot, so it widened into a whole chapter that’s going to be very long. So I try to stay flexible!!
22. Do you title your fics before, during, or after the writing process? How do you come up with titles?
My titling process is so random and useless honestly dghhd 😂😂 I generally don’t title until after the fic’s started, but only if the title isn’t what inspires the fic. I try to nail it down early though, bc it doesn’t feel anchored in my head otherwise and for some reason that makes the fic feel like. Less ready to be worked on?? The RivKo mainfic has been renamed four times and currently doesn’t have a title, so it’s sitting backseat while I try to find one that grabs me by the throat. Rising Tides of Blood literally just popped in my head while I was remembering the dream it was based on, and Happiness is a Warm Gun came on shuffle and I went OH YEAH? DGHJF
29. What’s something about your writing that you’re proud of?
Gsgsh this is actually a really good question bc I’m honestly not sure if I’ve ever sat down and tried to think about it. I like the rhythm of my writing, and how musical it can be, and I also like that I can convey big images or feelings (good bad horrific painful or ecstatic) simply with small words and scenes. It’s taken decades of work, but actually I’m really proud of myself for pouring the energy into my writing and for loving it as much as I do.
35. What’s your favorite fic you’ve posted?
DFHFD as far as CoD goes, I am so CRUSHINGLY pleased with For the Sake of Having You Near. I’m like over the moon with the small details of it, the like complete lack of grandiosity in the dynamic—just the way they’re real people outside of warfare, with lives that are often dull or mundane or unremarkable and small. I want the fic to feel as simultaneously comfortable/stifling as the rectory feels to Price and Prem and I think I’ve been succeeding.
50. How would you describe your writing style?
Big concepts with little words!! Also like. Smth smth an endless grinding mill of processing emotions that society deems ugly? Not sure, it’s been A Day dghd.
69. What are your favorite fics at the moment?
(NICE.)
As far as CoD goes, easily my favorites are anything by the server friends ( @parttimeprophet @alittleposhtoad @dotcie @kastlequill 🥰 ), but outside of the circle I’m very guilty of not reading all that much fic within the fandom 💀💀
GSGHSS ACTUALLY I WENT TO CHECK AND ONE OF MY FAVES UPDATED IM SHITTING GEGSG
EVERYONE GO READ A TASTE OF SAFETY IT FUCKING SLAPS FGHGC

I watched stranger things s1 way back when it aired and thought it was pretty good but then couldn’t be bothered to keep watching when s2 came out and haven’t paid it any thought since and yet now after seeing gif after gif of Eddie fucking Munson and reading headcanons and ficlets about steddie on tumblr I’m suddenly in a position where I’ve read at least 300k worth of steddie ao3 fics and I can tell I’m not about to stop any time soon. I still haven’t watched any more of the show. What is this strange power Steve and Eddie hold
omggg i feel this in my BONES. only difference is i have watched all of it (some seasons multiple times hskgsd) BUT. i totally get what you mean. like there is just SOMETHING about eddie goddamn munson. like, they put fucking CRACK in that boy or something lol.
i was a VERY casual fan before s4, like i watched s1 when it first aired too and i really liked it! but it was definitely one of those this is really cool i really dig it but i'm not like obsessed kind of likes. and i got excited about the other seasons too and i binged them all when they came out, but again, super casual!! like once i watched that would be it. i wouldn't really think about it all that much after. i didn't seek out any fan spaces for it, didn't really discuss the plots or analyze it or anything outside of like very general predictions with family and friends who watched too, and i certainly didn't create or write for it at all.
but then season god damn 4. season goddamn 4 and eddie goddamn munson!!!! i fell in LOVE. i got SUCKED IN. i was pulled DEEP. the obsession set innnnn, that funky little dude sunk his claws in deep and dragged me headfirst into a full on stranger things fixation - dedicating my blog to it, reading a million fics, writing a million fics, joining discords, signing up for zines - and i am STILL hooked, 4? 5? months later?
there's just something SO good about eddie and something SO good about steddie!!! steve and eddie just FIT so goddamn WELL it's insane, truly, how complimentary they are to one another. i reblogged a post about it earlier, where it pointed out how steve and eddie so clearly want the same things, how they have plans for the future but those plans are not set in stone, they're flexible, and all that really matters is if they're together and are able to get and give the support they need to. also i feel like they're both SO easy to put into any sort of situation - ESPECIALLY eddie. because like as much as the show gives him plenty of interests and traits and all, he is still SUCH a malleable character, still SO easy to project onto and relate to and to shape into what you want him to be. and that makes for a WONDERFUL canvas to work from.
and honestly, i am SO glad that this did happen, because like i've met so many incredible people through this fandom already and i've had such a good time, and also steddie has sort of like reignited my love for writing too? like, i didn't not love writing before steddie, but i felt like i was sort of in a writing slump for a very long time. like i wrote for other fandoms and pairings but i would never make it past 10 fics (barely even made it past 5 for some!!) and it just wouldn't stick, and i just wasn't coming up with ideas or getting that spark of inspiration. but with steddie ohhh my god!!! it's been FANTASTIC!! i've been writing more the past couple of months than i have the last like 2 years. i've broken the under 10 fics curse with them haha and i have sooo many ideas still. and the response to the fics i have posted has been insane!!! like so good! and i am blown away!!
so yeah, basically i owe eddie munson my goddamn LIFE sjfdhksf
(also, i totally do recommend you watch the rest!! like the show has it's issues and some rocky narrative choices, like all shows do, but overall it is a very enjoyable show and there's a lot of good stuff that comes out of the other seasons too!! ESP season 3, my beloved. scoops steve?? YES. scoops troop team up?? YESS. robin buckley introduction!!! YESSS!!)

Hello! I love love love your writing and I definitely am inspired by you as a writer! I was wondering if you had any guiding principles or lessons learned from writing AUs that'd you'd be kind enough to share. As a reader I'm often not that interested in AUs (like hardly ever) but yours have always completely sucked me in and immersed me! Just wondering if you had any thoughts on the subject you'd be generous enough to share. Otherwise I'm just happy to thank you for all the wonderful stories you've contributed over the years - so thank you!
hi! thank you so much! this is so kind and very cool to hear, given your usual feelings about AUs. i’m the same, i rarely read setting-shift AUs. they tend to just feel 'inspired by' the characters which is usually not what i’m seeking. i think i access characters through story and theme so when it comes to investing in fic i need basic motivations and arcs to align with canon somewhat for it to ring true. whereas i get the vibe the opposite is true among much of fandom-- translating expression/personality is enough, so the character's more malleable, you can use them to play out a huge range of story frameworks (and honestly, more power if this works for ppl! i regret that my imagination is kinda limited when it comes to extra-canon things)
i have few conscious strategies but i’ll try to articulate the AU thought process best as i can (bearing in my mind it’s all just to serve the romance). i hope it makes sense and is helpful on some level
for me, characterisation and theme delimits AU roles, interactions and plot (which takes a backseat in shipfic anyway), never the other way around. i strongly believe experiences and circumstances make the character so there are major limits to what AUs i’d consider writing in the first place for a given ship/character. there has to be some kind of throughline with canon, whether it’s a more direct analogue to their story or i’m magnifying/riffing off a particular facet of the canon i like. theme, ability and personality based reasons for AU occupations (broadly in that order) are better than aesthetic ones. real basic example, i wouldn’t have written my korrasami mermaid AU with asami as the mermaid because i can’t think of a good enough “hinge” for that, especially when korra's right there with her water powers and fantasy dreamgirl naivete
i basically visualise AU versions as being on a leash from canon characterisation. not a rule by any means but when i change something, i kind of ask myself: what’s the reason i’m lengthening the leash? it doesn’t have to be textually explicit but it helps to have an inkling of what it is about the new setting/context that is inflecting the “base” character
therefore it’s worth starting with a strong interpretation of who your characters are in the marrow. and that basically is my guiding principle, since i write shipfic and nothing more complicated. (korrasami AUs come way easier to me than others simply because i’ve been writing them for so many years that (my take of) their character ‘skeletons’ are second nature). i recommend stuff like character workshop sheets-- people always fill them out for OCs but they’re great fic aids
same goes for the interpersonal dynamics: find the essence, the attributes you don't want to sacrifice. i feel like these are more flexible/contingent compared to individual characterisation but i usually like the balance of power and main points of connection between the characters to be intact. if i made a ship manifesto or blueprint, i'd want like 60% it to be reflected in the AU even if a different element was being spotlighted
the setting is almost the most incidental part, just guided by what aesthetics/vibes/prose i’m excited about! i consider how the tone/genre i want for the story and the chosen setting would interact with the characters, which aspects of them it makes sense to highlight here, and what storyline that could inform-- again, rather than them being plopped into a prescribed trope- or plot-mandated AU role. while i think it’s important that most of their personality and some of their motivations (beyond romance) should resonate with canon, imo values more than anything are the core of a character so i try to maintain them inasmuch as they come into play (there are excellent fics that play drastically with characters’ philosophies but to me they always feel like OCs)
with all the above in mind i’ll use korra in some of my korrasami AUs as an example to show that they’re all variations on a theme, what i think is the crux of her: she has an eager, sensuous personality and must navigate being "special", for better and for worse
modern au: it follows canon beats closely. stakes are always dialled down in mundane AUs but the psychic conflict is similar—korra feels like her worth is tied up into a high pressure high profile role, losing that through a debilitating injury catalyses a difficult coming of age of sorts. (also since korra can’t be an avatar in this setting, asami is not a ceo - balance in their circumstances). more ‘normal’ upbringing than in canon -> less sheltered, less volatile
mermaid au: she's the bridge between two worlds. less stifled than in canon, plus fairytale setting -> her personality is more disneyfied, bubbly and innocent. emphasises her itchy fingers and curiosity, an openness to changing the world even in the absence of prescribed duty. special magical powers that still invoke a distant sense of responsibility
royalty au: she's older, more confident, developed- in an inherently restrictive role but one where she has retained a lot of autonomy and isn't cut off from the real world, emphasises her diplomatic role to show her balancing (if not yet reconciling) her responsibilities with more base instincts. she's further along her arc: it's mostly the romance throwing a spanner in the works

Hello tumblr. I have returned from a long period of inactivity, because I must bring the good word to the corner of the Star Wars fandom that used to be my main fannish home: there is a new era of Star Wars canon that was made just for our taste. It is called the High Republic.
WHAT IS THE HIGH REPUBLIC?
Tumblr media
The High Republic is an giant multi-media project being carried out by the Lucasfilm story group to create a brand new era of Star Wars canon. It is set a few hundred years before the prequel era (so, a long time after the Old Republic era), in a period of peace and stability within the Republic. It currently includes several English language adult novels, a YA novel, two serialized comics, a manga, some short stories, and some short video blurbs published on facebook and youtube. A TV show for Disney+ has also been announced, but is a few years off. This project is unique in Star Wars, in that all of the different parts are being written together by one writing team, and are coordinated to tell a cohesive story. Also, what has been announced is just the beginning – they have stated that there will be three different sections of the High Republic, and everything we have had announced so far is just part one. As a note: this is an era for which there was NO pre-existing canon in Legends, so it is totally new territory.
OKAY, THAT’S NICE, BUT WHY SHOULD I BOTHER TO CHECK IT OUT?
Tumblr media
There are SO many reasons why the High Republic is worth your time to explore. I will try to outline some of them here below the cut (without any significant spoilers).
IT IS A LOVE LETTER TO THE JEDI
Tumblr media
This is the era for everyone who loves the Jedi and wants to understand how they got to the point they did in the prequel era. It shows Jedi at their best: saving people, working together, being completely in tune with the Force (in so many beautiful and original ways), demonstrating creativity and flexibility and being rewarded for it, actually thinking through the ethics of things like the mind trick, and DEALING with their emotions rather than repressing them. It shows us how the rigid Jedi culture was saw in the prequels was a corruption of something that was originally healthy and uplifting. Jedi in this era are allowed to be flawed, and to grow, and have a community that supports them in doing so. This is the Jedi culture so many of us created as fix it fic for the prequel era, but made canon.
IT IS AN ERA OF HOPE
Tumblr media
There are some serious problems in the High Republic Era. Without spoilers, the era opens with a terrible humanitarian crisis, laid over the Republic equivalent of the New Deal from US history.  We see a lot of examples of people doing their best to be good to each other, and working for a more just and kind galaxy. They acknowledge that things are not perfect, but people from many different backgrounds (Jedi, politicians, farmers, pilots, business people) work together to try and make things better. I don’t know about you all, but with the darkness we see in the world today, I NEED some of that optimism in my escapist media. The High Republic provides that.
IT WILL GIVE YOU FEELINGS
Tumblr media
The existing material so far is structured to really let you emotionally invest in the characters and their struggles. Unlike with many eras of Star Wars canon, characterization is not sacrificed for the sake of plot (though never fear, there is PLENTY of plot). That means there is huge scope for empathy. I’m not going to lie; I cried within the first three chapters of Light of the Jedi, as did several other people I know. It is POIGNANT in a way that feels truly genuine.
IT IS FUN
Tumblr media
The writing team understands that, in the end, Star Wars is space fantasy. If your space fantasy is nothing but serious, gritty grimdark, it becomes pretentious and unbearable. So, for all that there is some heavy content in the High Republic (VERY heavy content – the Nihil should really have their own content warning), it has many moments of levity that keep it from taking itself too seriously. For example, the High Republic made Jedi bodice rippers canon. Also, characters like Geode exist (yes, that rock there is a CHARACTER). The result is something which honors the spirit of Star Wars, and keeps you engaged without being tedious or ridiculously depressing.
THE WRITING TEAM HAS DIVERSE PERSPECTIVES
Tumblr media
The main writing team consists of five people: Justina Ireland, Claudia Gray, Charles Soule, Daniel José Older, and Cavan Scott. You will note that includes two people of color, two women, and one out Queer person (in fact, one of the writers is all three of those things). This is a far cry from the white-cis-straight-man-dominated writing teams we have seen in the past. And when they bring in other people to the project, they make a point of looking for perspectives that aren’t represented on their team – for example, the manga is being co-written between Justina Ireland and Japanese writer Shima Shinya, and Ireland has stated in interviews that Shinya is taking the lead on the writing.
IT VALUES MEANINGFUL REPRESENTATION
Tumblr media
That diverse writing team means a cast that looks WAY more like the real world than any other era of Star Wars we’ve seen, in terms of representation. There are multiple characters of color, who are both heroes and central to the story. There are at least five canonical queer characters to date (a MLM couple, an Ace character, and two NB character).  [EDIT: Thank you @legok9 for letting me know about the NB characters]. Among binary gendered characters, there is a very even balance of men and women. The writing team has also stated that they will be incorporating more representation of disability in the works to come. And the story is so much better for it – representation is included here BECAUSE it makes for more creative, believable, and original storytelling.
IT IS ACCESSIBLE
Tumblr media
Because of the multiple formats, and the fact that it doesn’t rely on you knowing any prior lore, the High Republic offers many avenues to engage for people with all kinds of needs. Know nothing about Star Wars canon and feel intimidated about catching up? The canon is all new in this era anyway, so you’re fine. Can’t handle flashing lights? No problem – the little bit of video content that exists is totally free from the strobing effects that caused seizure and sensory issues. Need purely audio content? You can still have a full experience of the High Republic with the gorgeously sound-scaped audiobooks. Don’t have the attention span for books or long movies? Then the comics are your friend.
THERE IS SOMETHING FOR ALL
Tumblr media
Between the books aimed towards adults and teens (and their respective audiobooks), the kids books, the comics, the manga, the short stories, AND the eventual TV show on Disney+, there is going to be content in the High Republic that suits most audiences. And that is just what has been announced so far – there is still more to come for phases II and III. This isn’t Star Wars written towards one group or demographic – it is Star Wars for everyone.
DID I MENTION THE FANCY JEDI UNIFORMS?
Tumblr media
Because cosplayers and fanartists? This is the era for you. We are getting Jedi in silks with elaborate gold embroidery. Jedi with jewelry other decorative elements. Even the practical field uniforms have tooled and embossed leather. If you want to draw or make Jedi that have some of that that sweet LoTR-esque high fantasy aesthetic, the High Republic has your back. (Not going to lie – I am ALREADY imagining the time travel AUs. Put Obi-Wan in fancy clothes!)
OKAY, YOU’VE SOLD ME. WHERE SHOULD I START?
Tumblr media
I strongly recommend everyone looking to get into the High Republic (who is old enough to be on Tumblr) start with Light of the Jedi by Charles Soule. I alternated between the physical book and the audio book, and found it delightful in both formats. After that, you have a lot of options. You can read or listen to the audio book of the YA novel A Test of Courage by Justina Ireland. You can check out the currently running Star Wars: The High Republic comic from Marvel, or the Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures comic from IDW. Or you can skip straight to Into the Dark by Claudia Gray. Honestly, there is no wrong order to try out most of the High Republic.
IN CONLUSION
Tumblr media
The High Republic is Star Wars written for people who DON’T want Star Wars to be a good ‘ol boys club for salty white dudes who don’t want to see anything but more of Luke Skywalker. It offers broad representation, and optimistic narrative, and whole bunch of awesome Jedi content. If you are someone who fell in love with Jedi in the prequel era, the High Republic will give you more of what you loved. And if you are totally new to Star Wars? The High Republic is here for you too.
So, go check it. And then go write fic for it (please, there are only, like, 14 fics on AO3, I am dying).

Author Interview Part V
The talented and all-round fabulous @weilongfu joined us today for another part of the Author Interview.
Stories written for the Collection:
The Day of Singularity
Four meetings with Officer Meng (But one with Shao Fei)
Interview:
How did you come into the Trapped fandom?
I came into the Trapped fandom the way I’ve gotten into many of my fandoms. By everyone around me screaming about it. People like @andwebegin, @ctl-yuejie, and @florbexter were pretty instrumental in getting me aware that it was going to happen. Especially after having taken their word about HIStory2: CTL, I was more than willing to check out Trapped. Especially after I found out more about the potential plot.
My usual philosophy after that is to at least watch the first few episodes. If I’m not hooked by anything, then I give it up. Trapped kept me hooked for good! I fell in love with everyone in the show and the rest is… history?
Who’s your favourite character?
I love a lot of characters in the show for different reasons. I love Zhao Zi for his honesty and genuine desire to do good. I like the mystery and mischief of Jack. I admire Tang Yi’s deep feelings and emotions. And I greatly enjoyed Shao Fei’s straightforwardness and ability to commit. If I had to pick one, I’d go with Zhao Zi because we both love food, potentially like dangerous boys, and we both want the world to be a better place.
What’s your favourite trope?
I honestly have been enjoying a lot of the AU fics that are in the fandom. Like the original Trapped setting is great, but pushing the boys into college or further back? It’s been an amazing thing to read and I’ve enjoyed it immensely. As to whether I’ll write it? Eh… Someone did ask if I’d ever write a proposed fic about College Freshman!Jack dating HS Senior!Zhao Zi so…
What do you like about writing for Trapped?
The best part about writing for Trapped has actually been the fandom. Everyone is so supportive and nice. It’s a real pleasure to see the responses I get which are also always very friendly.
Aside from that? Trapped has such varied and interesting characters. It’s very easy to find the right knob to twist or switch to flip that can make a large variety of fics happen.
Care to elaborate about your writing process?
My writing process is a mess!
I don’t usually outline because then I over-outline. A lot of my fics were spawned from just coming up with a good title! And that’s in every fandom I write for.
But once I get going, things usually just flow. I’ll go back and read it once or twice to make sure I haven’t truly fucked something up, but once I’m done, I’m usually done for good and I post it before I second guess myself. Truly, I treat writing fics like how I take exams. Just get it done and hand it in before you delete/erase something that actually worked!
Sometimes it’s not that easy, and I have struggled with a few fics just because I’ve managed to overthink myself or I get hung up on an idea, but I have yet to find a better or more comfortable way for me to write.
Your favourite Trapped fic by another author?
Oooo…. Well I have to give a shout out to @decadentdeerpolice and @the-wintry-mizzenmast for their lovely fics during the last exchange. I absolutely loved how they filed the prompt for me.
I’m also a big fan of Skuld’s The Divine Art of the Househusband series. It’s definitely a twist on what Jack’s life as a househusband would be like and it’s always fun to see a new update!
I also liked @sarah-yyy ‘s fics fortune and amuse bouche.
The next set of fics I’m actually eagerly awaiting updates on is Flor’s Breaking the Firewall series. The espionage and manoeuvring that’s happened in just the first parts is already super fun.
What do you want to write but never had the nerve to?
Hmm… I’m not sure? There aren’t a lot of ideas that I’ve never really had the nerve to put down on paper, if only to get them to stop bothering me. There are a few that never really made it to paper though. Like my Fantasy!AU where all the boys are different positions and have different abilities.
I wanted to write Jack as a member of the Assassin’s Guild. Zhao Zi would be part of the guard and mostly be seen as a scribe, except when he pulls the robes off and gives most thieves a run for their money in his trap deactivating, lock picking, and ward/seal breaking. Shao Fei would, of course, be a paladin as he believes in the law and doing what’s right. Tang Yi would so be a weapons master type character, as once he was adopted by the ‘noble’ Tang Guo Dong, he was trained in many styles to defend himself.
The idea fell apart after that because I had no idea what they’d do afterwards. Plus they’re missing a ranged caster and committed healer in the party and everyone who has played D&D knows that’s a mistake waiting to cause a total party kill. (I mean you could argue Hong Ye would totally make a great sorceress and Dao Yi would be the cleric cleaning up her messes, but let’s not get this any bigger.)
If you want, please share a snippet of your current Trapped WIP!
It wasn’t very often that Zhao Zi wondered what was the first link in the chain of decisions that lead him to slightly less than desirable outcomes. Not because Zhao Zi lacked insight or critical thinking, he was a police officer after all. It was often because Zhao Zi was usually pretty good at pulling himself out of a pinch.
A smile and innocent disposition were very good for many things. When those failed, being flexible in many ways helped some more.
(The third option was that he was legally allowed to carry a gun, even if no one wanted Zhao Zi to carry a gun.)
But as Zhao Zi lifted a large, homemade sausage to his lips while Jack eyed him expectantly, Zhao Zi contemplated if his grandmother would approve of what he was about to do to a perfectly decent piece of food and what had brought him to this new point in his life in the first place.
------
Zhao Zi had been through practice interrogations before, but none of them had prepared him for someone like Jack. And despite Jack’s initial countenance, there was something about his smile, how easily he showed his teeth. It should have been predatory and dangerous. But in the curve of Jack’s eyes, Zhao Zi knew he wasn’t in any danger.
Of course, Zhao Zi knew plenty about Jack. Working with Shao Fei for so long, Zhao Zi knew plenty about Tang Yi’s most recent right hand man. Jack was a known mercenary, but he’d somehow managed to keep his nose just clean enough, just on the gray side of legal. All evidence was circumstantial. Even the International Crimes Division was often stuck dancing around Tang Yi’s lawyers when they were aiming for whatever secrets were hiding in Jack’s mind.
So it was Jack’s smile and eyes that allowed Zhao Zi to sell Shao Fei out in exchange for food. He did not expect the food to taste as good as it would. Nor did he expect that he might enjoy Jack pulling him close as Zhi De knocked over his bowl of noodles.
Zhao Zi decided to be open-minded. Jack was certainly interesting and fun. No harm in getting to know someone, right?
------
Jack knew he was smitten the moment Zhao Zi sold out his friend for food.
Good survival instincts. Good taste. Cute face too.
Jack was also hardly the kind of guy who just let things happen to him. But Zhao Zi was a new quantity. He’d have to slowly edge his way in, find out just how Zhao Zi might handle another man pursuing him.
So when Zhao Zi said, “Don’t you need to try it?”
Jack knew this was his chance to appeal to the clear foodie Zhao Zi was. “I don’t need to. I know I’m a good cook.”
“Huh? I meant Ah Fei’s number!”
“Too subtle,” Jack thought.
But Jack got to hold Zhao Zi close and a promise to see him again anyway.
“That could be like a date, right?” Jack thought as he rushed to collect Tang Yi from the hospital.
Thank you so much @weilongfu for the Interview

THE POSITIVE & NEGATIVE; Mun & Muse - Meme.
fill out & repost ♥ This meme definitely favors canons more, but I hope OC’s still can make it somehow work with their own lore, and lil’ fandom of friends & mutuals. Multi-Muses pick the muse you are the most invested in atm. image:
Tumblr media
My muse is:   canon / oc / au / canon-divergent / fandomless /
Is your character popular in the fandom?  YES / NO. Is your character considered hot™ in the fandom?  YES / NO / IDK. (It depends? I think she’s gorgeous lol) Is your character considered strong in the fandom?  YES / NO / IDK. (She should be and I’ll fight anyone that says otherwise) Are they underrated?  YES / NO. Were they relevant for the main story?  YES / NO. Were they relevant for the main character?  YES / NO / THEY’RE THE PROTAG. (cue argument that Ichigo and Rukia are two halves of a main protag) Are they widely known in their world?  YES / NO. How’s their reputation?  GOOD / BAD / NEUTRAL. How strictly do you follow canon?  —  I follow canon pretty much up to the last few chapters (although I do rp the ending ship as well) so it’s really flexible within canon. Ichiruki is my OTP but RenRuki is my second favorite. I do not believe Rukia would have been fine with everything going back to “status quo” in the Soul Society so that’s where I refuse to follow canon at all.
SELL YOUR MUSE! Aka try to list everything, which makes your muse interesting in your opinion to make them spicy for your mutuals.  —  Rukia is one of the most selfless characters in this series. She would not hesitate to risk her life to save a stranger. She doesn’t tolerate bullying or any abuse of power. Frequently she puts the needs of others above her own. Rukia takes her duties as a soul reaper very seriously but is not a blind rule follower. If a rule doesn’t match her morals, she’ll ignore it. She’ll come across like a noble (because she technically is one by adoption) but she can go from sipping plum wine elegantly in a super expensive silk kimono that will take your breath away to pickpocketing your valuables, sweeping your legs out from under you and fighting dirty. Can you ask for more?
Now the OPPOSITE, list everything why your muse could not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?).  — Well she’s not particularly striking physically. She’s very small and doesn’t look very intimidating. Rukia is also not very friendly naturally. This doesn’t mean she’s rude, she just doesn’t let very many people into her inner circle. She’s not very physically affectionate with those outside her group and is a little awkward with receiving it from others. Also while Rukia doesn’t lie, she would say somewhat neutral things rather than hurt someone’s feelings. I think some of the fandom might think she’s weak and constantly just getting rescued by someone stronger than her, I severely disagree with this (and have words for Kubo about that). Her bankai I think is one of the most powerful but in a quiet way. (No one else has to actually die for the bankai, do they? Yeah, she’s bad ass.)
What inspired you to rp your muse?  —   When I first started watching Bleach, I connected with Rukia instantly on a very personal level. I loved everything about her and she resonated with me a lot. I feel like I can understand her easily and it just flowed. When I first joined the RPC, there was no question as to which character I would be doing. She’s the only one I’ve very really roleplayed. I cosplay her at cons and I just love everything about her, flaws and all.
What keeps your inspiration going?  —   Honestly, that connection did not waver, even during my hiatus. I love the fan art and fan fics, head canons, etc. I love exploring her character and developing her beyond what Kubo gave us.
Some more personal questions for the mun.
Give your mutuals some insight about the way you are in some matters, which could lead them to get more comfortable with you or perhaps not.
Do you think you give your character justice?  YES / NO. ( I hope) Do you frequently write headcanons?  YES / NO. (YES and I love it) Do you sometimes write drabbles?  YES / NO. Do you think a lot about your Muse during the day?  YES / NO. Are you confident in your portrayal?   YES / NO. (sometimes?) Are you confident in your writing?  YES / NO. (sometimes?) Are you a sensitive person?  YES / NO. Do you accept criticism well about your portrayal?  — ahh so I take criticism super personally even when I know it’s not meant so I guess it depends on the delivery? I will probably mull it over for a few days before the sting is gone. So if you have some, just be nice? lol
Do you like questions, which help you explore your character?  —  YES YES YES! I absolutely love head canons and questions that make me think about what my character would do or think. I welcome them all the time and I don’t care how silly or obscure they may sound so send them my way!
If someone disagrees to a headcanon of yours, do you want to know why?  —  Sure. I mean, if it’s just a difference on opinion without much fact to back either one, then it’s probably just going to be an agree to disagree. But if it’s something that they have more information on that refutes something I said (like canon evidence), please share! It could be that I didn’t know or we interpreted it differently. I welcome that kind of debate or conversation.
If someone disagrees with your portrayal, how would you take it?  —  I mean, everyone is entitled to their opinion and I certainly don’t believe everyone has to like my way of writing Rukia. If they don’t like it, I would probably just say they can ignore it or unfollow (because why would you follow me if you don’t like what I write? I mean, come on.)
If someone really hates your character, how do you take it?  —  Well, if it’s like  they just can’t stand my character at all, again... you can unfollow me anytime? Why would you follow an rp blog of a character you dislike so strongly? I mean, I don’t mind anyone following me if they keep it to themselves but if someone is going to be upset anytime they see my writing or my character on their dash, doesn’t it make sense to not follow? I’m not sure what the purpose of this question is but again, everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
Are you okay with people pointing out your grammatical errors?  —  So I’m human like anyone else. Sometimes I’m typing on my phone, sometimes I’m typing really fast, sometimes I’m distracted by my toddler or work. I don’t mind gentle corrections but if I feel that I have to proofread my threads or posts before posting them because of someone pointing out errors, it’s really going to make me hesitant to write. So I guess what I’m saying is if you want do so kindly and every so often, that’s fine but if you get to be a stickler about it, it’s going to make me less likely to interact with you.
Do you think you are easy going as a mun?   —  I would like to think I am? This is probably a better question for my partners but I don’t think I’m too strict?
That’s about it, congrats for filling out! tagged by @bleachintothemultiverse Tagging: @wild-pineapple-butt, @nightbeat-cat, @deivorous, @toomanydamnmuses, @glacies-tempestatem, @t-hitsugaya, @toshiro-hitsugaya, and anyone else that wants to do this lol

Author Interview: holylangdon
If you’re into sexy characters with questionable levels of morality (and who isn’t?), look no further than the fanfiction of @holylangdon. She writes American Horror Story fanfiction, mostly about son of Satan Michael Langdon, in case you couldn’t tell from the name. We’re excited that she took some time out of this busy and spooky month to talk to us about writing!
Tumblr media
How did you start writing fanfiction?
I think I wrote my first real fanfiction piece around mid-2016, and to be honest, it was just purely out of boredom. I remember making my account on Wattpad and beginning to draft the fic. It was a terribly rainy afternoon and I was home alone. I had read some fanfiction earlier that day and got a little idea that I actually really liked, and I had nothing better to do, so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to just write a little bit of it down.
Over the next few weeks, that somehow evolved into a 20-something chapter AU fic about Luke Hemmings from 5 Seconds of Summer and a ghost girl [...] It actually (much to my surprise) got somewhat popular there for a little while, although, in hindsight, it was pretty awful. I think I have it saved on my old account there, but I haven’t looked at it since I took it down later that year, so I really don’t remember the plot at all. It was called “Figment,” though.
Anyway, I  think it’s safe to say I’ve always had a bit of a flair for the paranormal, haha.
What about American Horror Story made you want to write fanfiction for it?
Good question! I think there are a couple main reasons, actually. I saw the Murder House & Coven seasons first, and I was pretty much instantly sold on all of it. It’s spooky, has a wide supernatural aspect to it. It’s also pretty dramatic and for the most part, it’s well-written. Most of the characters are very solid, the cast of actors and actresses portraying them are nicely chosen, and they characters themselves usually pretty nicely developed throughout each season. It just felt right to at least give it a shot, and then I fell down the rabbit hole.
What is your writing process like? Do you do a lot of planning and/or outlining? Do you write with music or TV on in the background?
I’m not really sure I have any real, legitimate process, to be honest. Usually when I feel like writing, I’ll go through the requests submitted by some of my followers first and see if anything jumps out. Most of the time I can piece together a few and make something nice out of them. If nothing seems appealing, then there’s pretty much always something else lurking around in my head. I always have a ton of fic ideas that I like and want to write, but never actually do, haha. And occasionally, I get one that just sticks, and won’t leave me alone until I sit down and write it. In fact, I’m actually working on one of those with the help of a close friend at the moment!
Kind of the same thing with outlining and planning. If it’s a requested fic, I’ll kind of just go with the flow and revise the little things as I write. But if it’s something of my own, like a longer, more detailed fic, I’ll definitely open up the notes app on my phone and jot down some ideas. Mostly quotes or lines that I’ve thought of and want to incorporate, ideas and talking points for it. I’m known to get distracted when I write, and having that note to reference is always nice and helps pull me back on track.
As for any sound in the background, it always depends on the fic itself. Never any TV, because I know I’ll probably get sidetracked and end up watching it instead of writing. But I always have some kind of music playing, even when I’m not doing any writing. If I’m creating something that I want to have a specific feeling, like some angst or something fluffy, I’ll put on something specific on to match what mood I want it to have. I’ve noticed that it’s usually sad, piano-heavy music or soft, acoustic versions of songs, respectively. If there’s no specific mood that I’m going for, I tend to just play some Hozier or Lewis Capaldi or something similar. Dermot Kennedy, too. Just calm, easy listening.
American Horror Story is an interesting show to write for because there’s a new story each season, and the actors usually play different characters each season. Does that affect your fanfiction at all? Why or why not?
Not really. I love having a fresh set of characters every season, regardless of who’s playing them! The more, the merrier!
How do you choose which characters to write for? What traits really make you want to write about a character?
I’ll write for almost any character, really. I love to challenge myself and find things that feel “new” to me. So if someone has a specific person in mind that they’d like to see something for, I’ll pretty much always give it a shot. There aren’t very many characters that I just flat out don’t write for, and they’re usually one of two things-- I either have difficulties getting their character just right and end up not liking what I’ve created, so I scrap it (Kai Anderson is a big one for me for this), or I just don’t like them and find myself uncomfortable writing for them. I wouldn’t really say there are any traits that 100% will make me write for a character, it’s just a sort of an organic attraction to them, I think. Hopefully that makes sense, haha.
You write series, one-shots, and headcanons. Do you have a favorite type of writing, or does that just depend on the story idea and your mood?
I would definitely say that it depends on how I’m feeling in general, and what I think looks best for the idea I’m working with. More often than not, ideas that wouldn’t be enough to make a good one shot or fic are simple enough to be condensed into a set of headcanons, or, conversely, something that I think will make a good series just isn’t enough and ends up being made into another thing. It’s a really flexible process, honestly, but occasionally I’ll get too ambitious and make a fic that ends up being the better half of 10k words long, so I’ll split it down into multiple parts for easier reading. That’s how my Love, Michael series came to be!
American Horror Story deals with a lot of controversial themes, so a lot of the characters are naturally controversial. Do you enjoy this aspect of writing in the fandom?
Surprisingly, yes. I feel like a lot of people would say no, but I definitely do, to an extent. There are a few characters that are a little too far out there for me to write for, personally, but it’s always very interesting to see how other fic writers tackle them, and vice versa. I like experimenting and playing around with different themes and situations and such, so I’m also pretty glad that we have a very, very wide range of characters to write with in terms of things that may typically be considered too taboo or controversial.
How do you come up with your story ideas?
As I said earlier, a lot of the time it’s just putting requests together and filling in the blanks or my crazy little whim ideas. Some of my friends are really amazing at helping me with fics, though. Whenever I’m running low on inspiration or ideas, they always come through and help me out. So, so many of my ideas have been inspired by them. Seriously, they’re pretty much honorary fic writers at this point, they’re just amazing. But whenever it’s not them helping me or either of the aforementioned things, it’s probably inspired or based on a song I’ve been listening to lately.
(P.S., I know the three of you are reading this! I love you guys! <3)
If you had to explain fanfiction to someone who didn’t know anything about it in one paragraph, what would you say?
Oh, I’m really horrible at explaining things […] I guess I’d say it’s a whole bunch of people having fun together & creating interesting, fun, sometimes very questionable content, usually in the written form, on the internet with characters from shows and movies that they like. Practically anything you can think of, I can guarantee there’s fanfiction of it somewhere. Everything exists somewhere. Hopefully that would do.
Is there any plot line American Horror Story hasn’t covered yet that you’d like to see in an upcoming season? Why?
Ooh! I love this question! I was really excited for a slasher/summer camp season like 1984. I love slasher films, and summer camps are always a good setting for something like that. Plus, the eighties are pretty fun. I’m very happy that they used that idea.
All in all, I think a wasteland-themed season could be interesting. I love thinking about the end of the world and what it would be like, and in Apocalypse, the world is made into a barren, horrifying wasteland filled with radiation and rubble with only a handful of survivors.
At one point in the season, Michael Langdon tells a story of a woman and her child covered in lesions as a result of their exposure to the nuclear fallout from the bombs, and at another, we see a small group of people above ground. A season focused on survivors of a situation like that has a lot of potential, in my opinion. I haven’t seen this idea mentioned a lot and the whole apocalyptic thing seems to be over with (for now?), so it probably won’t ever happen, but it’s definitely something to think about!

Whats Nightwing and Deathstroke's dynamic? Why does it make you wince? Im not very familiar with it.
Nightwing and Slade actually have a really interesting and compelling dynamic in a lot of ways, that can be really good when written well and really terrible when not. My biggest issue is it is that its not sexual in the comics (Slade is a good thirty years older than him) or in other adaptations that have a version of it, like the Teen Titans cartoon. But fandom being fandom, Dick/Slade is a bigger ship than like, half his actual canon ships, so any new take on it always comes with a big sigh at all the new Dick/Slade shipping that’s gonna crop up or have a resurgence cuz of it. And I’m annoyed enough with YJ right now that I’m not giving them the benefit of the doubt that they’ll do anything new or interesting with it that’s worth having to wade through pages of new Dick/Slade noncon in the months afterwards. Its a ship that generates a lot of non-con fic in particular, or at least my old favorite, ‘dubcon’, with the dubious part of the consent referring to the fact that it usually involves mind control or brainwashing, both tropes that show up a lot in their interactions anyway. (Not that there’s anything dubious about this NOT allowing for consensual anything, just that people love to call it dubcon because….fuck if I know).
But anyway….in the comics, Deathstroke is a mercenary who’s one of the Titans’ earliest and most iconic enemies. Though at various times and depending on who’s writing him, he’s sometimes an antihero and even a semi-trusted ally of the Titans (usually with Dick specifically), other times a villain but with his own personal code of honor that means he won’t help the Titans or other heroes but he’ll refuse to take jobs that would pit him against them, and other times he’s full on remorseless and sadistic villain who hates them all and wants them all dead.
He also had three kids, his son Grant (the first Ravager), his younger son Joseph (Jericho) and his youngest, their half-sister Rose (the second Ravager). Basically, the first time he interacted with the Titans was when the supervillain group HIVE put out a contract to have the Titans all killed. Slade turned them down cuz of his personal honor code and how young the Titans were, but his son Grant accepted the contract in exchange for HIVE giving him superpowers to help him fulfill it. The process didn’t work right though, and when fighting the Titans, Grant’s powers overloaded and killed him.
Slade blamed the Titans for this, and vowed to finish the contract and kill them as some twisted way of honoring Grant. He doesn’t do Logic so good, well no, its more like he doesn’t really do parenting so good, as in he tends to have fuck all to do with his kids 364 days of the year, but then something bad happens to one of them and suddenly he thinks he’s Dad of the Year and going 0 to Homicidal in six seconds flat is the way to make up for all the times he’s let them down or screwed them over, instead of just…not Doing That.
So Slade recruited a young meta named Tara Markov (yup, that one) and trained her as his apprentice specifically to help him get revenge on the Titans. At his prompting, she joined the Titans as a spy for him, feeding him intel and plotting against them in one of the best known comicbook storylines of all time, The Judas Contract. It was up there with some of the X-Men’s best known stories like the Dark Phoenix Saga and Days of Future Past. (In the 80s actually, the Titans comic book was almost as popular as Uncanny X-Men at the time. Like way more than the Justice League. They were DC’s big hitters, popularity wise - specifically the lineup that for the most part was centered around Dick, Donna, Starfire, Beast Boy, Cyborg and Raven, with other members like the original Titans and later ones like Pantha and Wildebeest coming and going at various points in the 80s too).
Ultimately, Tara made her move and betrayed the Titans, enabling Slade to kidnap each of them one by one and turn them over to the HIVE….all except for Dick. In the meanwhile, he was approached by Slade’s ex-wife Adeline Kane - who has an equally all over the place dynamic with Slade, like sometimes she’s his worst enemy and other times she’s manipulating events behind the scenes to help him without him knowing, because she still loves him…it basically just depends on who’s writing her, same as with Slade. Also, Kane is Adeline’s maiden name, she’s distantly related to Kate Kane aka Batwoman in some extremely complicated manner I can never remember, but that’s mostly just trivia. I can’t remember a time its ever been relevant to a story, and it has nothing to do with Slade’s interactions with Dick.
ANYWAY. Point being, so Adeline, who blames and hates Slade at this time for their son Grant’s death, along with their other son Joey, seek out Dick and offer their help rescuing the Titans and defeating Slade. Joey is a metahuman as a result of Slade’s altered DNA (he has regenerative powers and is actually immortal, due to experiments the army did on him while he was a soldier). So Joey was born with powers although they didn’t activate until he was a young adult. His codename was Jericho and his power lets him possess peoples’ bodies. He’s also mute, and I’m half expecting him to show up in YJ fairly soon. If not this season then hinted at by the end of it. Also wouldn’t surprise me if they had plans to have him be gay in the YJ universe. He’s a character who was coded as gay practically from his debut. Joey/Dick is actually probably Dick’s oldest and most enduring slash ship, for the record.
So Joey works with Dick to rescue the Titans and defeat Slade, who’s captured and goes on trial for kidnapping the Titans. Joey ends up joining the Titans in the aftermath, and Adeline’s yay good, this was my Sekrit Plan all along, I did all this solely in the hopes that you would end up a superhero and have positive influences and not end up a murdering douchebag of flexible morality like your dad cuz fuck that guy, am I right Titans?
Did Adeline really just do all of that because she wanted her son to have more friends? Like…idk honestly it could go either way. Like….it IS the kind of thing she would do, tbh, so its as likely she was telling the truth as it is she just wanted to screw Slade one last time to avenge Grant and then was like hey if I take credit for my kid ending up a Titan now, I could probably play the “you owe me one” card later if I ever need to. Addy does like handing out “you owe me one” cards, just to be safe. Never know when you might need one.
The thing all this has to do with Dick is like, so it basically ended up being Dick versus Slade in the big finale, while Joey was rescuing the others and helping them face off against Tara. And for whatever reason - with multiple takes on this offered by multiple writers in the decades since - something about Dick just stuck with Slade and he’s had a kinda fascination with him ever since. Like he’s always talking about how much more he could teach Dick than what he already learned from Bruce, trying to convince him he’s got a killer instinct that Bruce just suppressed and its holding him back, blah blah, like saying he’s good, but Slade could make him great, so he surpasses both Bruce and Slade. TBH, he spends WAY more time obsessing about Dick and getting Dick to join him than he bothers paying attention to his own kids.
It really isn’t inherently sexual though, its a weird kinda pseudo father/son, pseudo mentor/mentee type thing. And its not entirely one-sided, because Dick at various times IS…tempted? Kinda? Like whenever Dick’s having some kind of crisis of conscience, or he’s pissed at Bruce or is questioning the effectiveness of superheroes or why they do the things they do or what does it all matter blah blah blah like omg I love you Dick, I really do, but sometimes you are such a drama queen, my god, blast some My Chemical Romance, experiment with drugs and chill out already, its not that deep. (LOL I kid. Well mostly). But point being, every once in awhile something happens that puts Dick in a funk and makes him second guess himself, and he spends like….a month being convinced he should reinvent himself as the anti-Bruce, that’s the solution, and this usually sends him in search of Slade except he’s always like ‘OH FANCY MEETING YOU HERE, THIS IS TOTALLY RANDOM AND NOT ON PURPOSE’.
And Slade likes to take any opportunity to try and convince him like BE A BAD GUY DICK, KILL PEOPLE FOR MONEY, ALL THE COOL KIDS ARE DOING IT. Except inevitably Slade does something that pisses Dick off and Dick snaps out of it and is like NO, IM A HERO AND THIS IS BAD, I REMEMBER NOW AND I’LL NEVER JOIN YOU, YOU’RE NOT MY REAL DAD I HATE YOU! And then they fight again, but with swords, not words, and then they’re like crap, we’re too well matched, this is going nowhere, you’re a worthy opponent, the only one I can truly respect, blah blah and then they call a breather and Slade’s like hey kid, wanna grab a beer and Dick’s like yeah but only if you promise not to kill anyone. And Slade’s like ugh fine.
And then Slade’s all, look kid, its been fun but its time you went home to your real family and your real life, this isn’t you, you’re a hero, I can’t try and turn you into something you’re not, its Wrong. And Dick’s like….umm yeah, I know, I literally JUST said that, how hard did I hit you? And Slade’s like NO SHHH, DONT TRY AND ARGUE, GO, YOU GO NOW, GO ON, LIVE YOUR LIFE, YOU DONT BELONG HERE IN THE DARK WITH ME, YOU’RE ONE OF THE GOOD ONES, GO BACK TO YOUR OWN KIND.
And Dick’s like no seriously dude, I already called my dad to come pick me up, what are you even on right now, are we having the same conversation?
Slade, sobbing paternally: I HAVE TO LET YOU GO, ALL I EVER DO IS HURT MY KIDS, I’M A TERRIBLE FATHER, ITS NO WONDER JOEY HATES ME.
And then Dick awkwardly slips out while Slade’s mid monologue, with his head thrown back yelling up at the sky and shaking his fists like WHY GOD WHY IS THIS THE WORLD WE LIVE IN WHY - because the thing about Slade is he’s actually even MORE of a drama queen than Dick, he just hides it better. Most of the time. But seriously tho.
Anyway yeah, this is like…a pattern with them basically. And Slade’s like, you’ve inspired me, I see in you the man I could’ve become, maybe even that I can still be, and he like doubles down on his personal honor code and becomes a Mercenary With A Heart for a couple years and even helps out the Titans every now and then (basically just whenever Dick’s in trouble and he goes on a killing spree, like NOBODY IS ALLOWED TO MURDER MY KIDS BUT ME - also by this point in time, Joey had died because Slade literally killed him, I forget why, it was a dumb story, but its okay Joey came back, its not like his name is Uncle Ben. But yeah, killing his kids is kinda a thing with Slade too, and he’s very proprietary about it).
And then he falls off the wagon and is like fuck, I forgot how much I like murder, ugh, you should have never tried to make me change, THIS IS WHO I AM, and Dick’s just like….I literally do not know where you’re getting these conversations from, like am I there when you think we’re having them, am I just blacking out…do I need to see a doctor??? And Slade’s like YOU WILL RUE THE DAY YOU EVER MET ME, GRAYSON, FROM NOW ON I AM THE TITANS’ MORTAL ENEMY and runs off all dramatically while Dick’s like…..wut, and all the other Titans are like srsly, dude, what is WITH you too, and Dick’s all I DON’T EVEN KNOW, HE’S JUST LIKE THAT.
In all seriousness though, ultimately my take on their dynamic is that for Slade, Dick’s a combination of seeing himself and Grant in Bruce and Dick’s dynamic, and its like….all about his regret and missed opportunities. Like, he tends to be super judgey of Bruce and critical of how he trains (and raises Dick) and passive aggressively like *I* would never do that and Dick just kinda lifts an eyebrow and is all, you’ve literally killed two of your three kids.
But like, Slade kinda views himself as the anti-Batman and thus Dick is inadvertently cast as Grant, but its like Slade can never decide if he thinks Bruce is actually holding Dick back from his full potential and he wants to push Dick the way he thinks Bruce refuses to, or if like, he blames Bruce for getting Dick involved in this life, the same life that got Grant killed, and wants to protect Dick from Bruce and from the same thing happening to him. So its this weird mix of Slade manipulating Dick sometimes and pushing him way further than even Bruce ever does and saying its for his own good, but also randomly mixed in there are these bouts of extreme protectiveness, and there’s like zero rhyme or reason to which he is on any given day and there’s never any way to predict where Slade will land and so it always fucks with Dick’s head in a big way, he’s like…I’m getting whiplash.
And then on Dick’s end, like, the thing about Dick like I’ve mentioned before is he’s a huge people pleaser? Like he’s a very empathetic caretaker type personality who sinks a huge amount of his identity into being everything for everyone, to the extent that he tends to lose sight of himself in the process, sometimes. And he’s also a perfectionist who was raised with the most demanding father of all demanding fathers ever, and has a lot of abandonment issues and insecurities that Bruce’s mutant power is to trip over and set off in the worst possible ways.
And so I think the reason Dick keeps seeking Slade out every now and then is not because he ACTUALLY wants to ever take Slade up on his offer and genuinely become his apprentice or partner and like, turn his back on how he was raised. I think the point of it for Dick is the fact that each and every time he ends up affirming for himself no, wait, this ISN’T actually what I want, I just needed to be reminded of that, to remember that. That he always pulls himself back before going too far. And at the same time, I do think on some level he likes that Slade is this kinda constant in his life, that at the end of the day Slade is like…so fixated on his potential and his achievements and his worth as a fighter and a hero, because like….Dick Grayson is a person who craves validation but will never ask for it ever.
And he’s one of those people who everyone is just so USED to liking without even thinking about it that it never occurs to them when talking amongst themselves about how great he is, that they forget to say this to his actual face? And so he never hears it? And never asks for it, because gasp, then people might think he’s needy, and that would be bad, so he mostly just goes and sulks in his apartment about how nobody likes him and he’s terribad. Except for Slade. Slade always compliments him on what a good fighter and what a good planner and what a good leader he is, so hmm wonder what he’s doing. He hasn’t committed any crimes in six months and I can’t find any reason to track him down and bring him in? Ugh, that asshole. Okay, ummm, I guess I could tell him I’m thinking of turning evil again, I haven’t done that in a couple years, he’d probably buy it.
And then later Bruce is pacing around the Batcave wrathfully shaking his fist, like “Damn that man and his sick hold over my son, if only I knew how he keeps getting his hooks into you!”
And Dick basically shrugs and plays games on his phone. “He mostly just tells me I’m special, and that’s nice to hear.”
Bruce, still pacing and ranting and fist shaking: “What kind of evil genius is he, how master a manipulator he must be to be able to get inside your head and upend your normal views of right and wrong, to make you entertain these ideas of working with him, learning from him…”
Dick: No its seriously just the saying nice things about me bit. I like that.
Bruce: If only I had a code word or phrase I could use to snap you out of whatever brainwashing he seems to be able to affect you with any time you come near him, perhaps some kind of alien tech….
Dick: You could try “I’m proud of you, son.” I mean if you’re taking suggestions.
Bruce: There’s also the possibility of a magical component to consider, blast, I hate working with magic so of course he WOULD do something like that, ugh I suppose I could ask Zatanna or Jason Blood for help there…
Dick: Cool cool, well this has been a fun and productive chat as always, so you keep doing…all that…and meanwhile I’m gonna go ponder my fixation on father figures who are 100% more committed to obsessing over their failures as a parent than like…actual parenting of their actual kids.
Bruce, ten minutes later: Dick? Where are you? DID SLADE GET TO YOU AGAIN? RIGHT UNDER MY NOSE? CURSE THAT MAN AND HIS UNNATURAL SKILLS, HOW DOES HE DO IT??!?
Anyway, that’s Slade and Dick. There’s also the whole Renegade thing, when Dick asked for Slade’s help in infiltrating the Society of Super Villains in his fake villain identity as Renegade, with you know, lots of Slade trying to corrupt him and also trying to murder any supervillains who looked as his not!son the wrong way.
And then there was the time Slade brought his daughter Rose to Dick to train and said he couldn’t teach her himself because his track record with training his kids and them not ending up dead is like, not good, and he’s superstitious or something? Idk, I forget his logic, it was probably bad though.
And Slade was like, I only trust you to be a competent teacher for my daughter, I want you to teach her everything you know! Except for like, being a hero. None of that nonsense. I FORBID you from trying to make my daughter into a hero or the deal is off. (The deal being that if Dick did this, Slade would not do crime in Dick’s city for a year).
And Dick was like, you got a deal. I will train Rose but there will be NO trying to make her a hero, I swear. /he said while crossing his fingers behind his back because duh.
And Slade was like okay, fine, you got a deal, I will absolutely still do crime and be villainous but only in every place except for Bludhaven specifically. /he said while crossing his fingers behind his back because duh.
And then Dick tried to make Rose a hero and then Slade blew up Bludhaven and that was definitely a thing, so…yeah.
In summation, Slade and Dick are weird but also very interesting but also if we get another rehash of the Renegade/apprentice arc aka the Teen Titans cartoon adaptation of that story aka the single most popular Dick Grayson fic trope of all time, like….I swear I will probably get a brain bleed.

Fic: The Beginning of Wisdom - Chapter 9 (Ao3 link)
Fandom: Flash, Legends of Tomorrow Pairing: Leonard Snart (Len) & Leonard Snart (Leo), Len Snart/Mick Rory, Leo Snart/Mick Rory, Len Snart/Mick Rory/Leo Snart, Leo Snart/Ray Terrill, Len Snart/Barry Allen
Summary: In which Leonard Snart is twins.
(the life and times and loves of Len and Leo Snart)
—————————————————————————————————–
"Have you seen him?" Leo asked quietly, after they’d held each other for some time. They both had excellent internal clocks, of course, but they never functioned right when they were together; that time always seemed to go on forever and yet never be enough. "Mick, I mean?"
"Of course I've seen him," Len snapped, though his vehemence was muted. "I go there practically every day –"
"As yourself?"
"...as Leonard."
"So, not really."
"No," Len agreed. "He always knows it's me, of course, but I don't feel like I deserve to be me around him."
Leo held him close. "You do."
"I hurt him."
"He's forgiven you."
"I haven't forgiven me," Len said. "And if I were you, or Mick, I wouldn't."
"Luckily, you're neither of us," Leo said, shaking his head. He knew that Len would never have held it against Leo or Mick if it had been him that'd been injured and they the cause, not for a second: it was only himself that he ever blamed for not taking the blow meant for another. "You should see him. As you."
"I'm trying," Len said.
I'm scared, he did not say.
"I'll come with you," Leo decided. "Both of us. That'll help."
Len pulled his head back and frowned at him. "The risk –" he started.
"Nothing we haven't dealt with before," Leo said. "Unimportant. We need – I need – to tell him about Ray, before anything else happens."
"Because Mick's first."
"You're first. Then Mick." Leo frowned. "And Lisa, but Lisa's on a whole different scale."
"Girl," Len agreed.
"Sister. I know plenty of perfectly nice, perfectly understandable girls."
"Yeah, and outta all of 'em, you like one: Lisa."
Leo decided not to dignify that (correct) statement with a response.
Mick, when he heard the story long after visiting hours that same night, burst out laughing.
"Don't do that," Len said crossly, rearranging his blankets and making sure his pillow was appropriately fluffed. "You'll hurt yourself."
"Stop fussing, boss," Mick said, cuffing him fondly upside the head. "My skin flexibility's back up, I can laugh all I want. And it is funny."
"It is not," Leo said. He might have been pouting.
"It really is," Mick said, shaking his head. "Don't worry, I don't mind. This Ray business, I mean."
"You – don't? You don't even know what my intentions towards him are!"
"You don't even know what your intentions towards him are," Mick pointed out. "That's what happens when you try to decide things using only half your brain."
Len smirked at Leo, who made a face back, conceding the point.
"And no, I really don't mind," Mick said. "You're a lot to handle, Leonard Snart; I always figured I'd have to share a piece of you one day. As long as he ain't awful..."
"He isn't," Leo said.
"Open to determination," Len said.
"'course, that does raise the question, don't it?" Mick continued thoughtfully.
Two sets of eyes blinked at him.
Mick settled down into his bed and reached out both hands, pulling an unresisting Leonard Snart down beside him, one on each side.
"I know this might be a new experience for you," he said, "but relationships are two-sided."
Another blink.
"He likes you, Number Two," Mick clarified. "But as you well know, that doesn't mean he'll like the boss. Lots more people like you than him, Two."
Leo frowned. It was true, of course, that he had many more acquaintances than Len – his industry supported that sort of thing more than Len's, as all of the backstabbing in the fashion world was purely metaphorical rather than very, very literal. And even before that, back in school, when people had known about them both, he had been the more popular because he had been the more charming and outgoing one...and yet...surely...
"Look at you," Mick laughed. "Each one of you with the same confused little wrinkle between your eyes. Did you guys really think that anyone you really cared about had to care about you – both of you – equally in return? Or would, just automatically?"
"Worked with you, didn't it?" Len grumbled.
“I’m not everyone.”
“It’s ‘ain’t not everyone’.”
“No, boss. It really isn’t, I swear. And anyway, atrocious grammar issues aside, you know that most people like just one person at a time, right?"
No.
Well, yes, but it didn't apply to them, surely?
"Besides," Mick continued. "I don’t see what the problem is, though: only one of you likes him, right? So what's it matter if he only likes one of you?”
“That’s not the point,” Len said.
"What a mess," Leo sighed.
"Can we even trust him enough to reveal the truth to him without him squealing?" Len asked.
"I think so," Leo said. "But I'm biased."
"I'll analyze him, then," Len said.
"Analyze," Leo said. "Not threaten."
"Fine."
"Before you get to putting the cart before the horse," Mick said dryly, "didn't the boss just scare him away?"
"Oh. Right. Crap."
Mick started laughing again.
The Leonards looked at each other and rolled their eyes.
(Leo noted approvingly how relaxed Len was with his head on Mick's shoulder, just the way it ought to be. They might not be fixed yet, but they were on their way, slowly but surely.)
Now, normally, they operated on a "he who screwed up is he who fixes it" approach, but in this instance they decided that Leo would probably have better luck sweet-talking Ray back into the job and thereby make himself available.
Leo sent flowers – Ray had once confessed that he liked them dreadfully, even if they were stereotypically girly – and an apology note, and asked Ray to meet him in his office.
Ray arrived with a smile.
"I know I said it in the note, but I really did want to apologize for what happened last time," Leo said.
"It's fine."
"It really isn't."
Ray shrugged. "No, it's – really, it's fine. Actually, to tell you the truth, I'd kind of been wondering when we'd get to see Hyde again."
Leo blinked. He hadn't been expecting that - nor did he know what to do about it. "Hyde? What do you mean?"
Ray had a way about him that when he blushed, he positively glowed. It was a Ray thing, not a model thing; by this point, Leo was familiar with enough models to say that with confidence.
He was glowing now.
"I – oh – er – you didn't know – I thought – can we forget I said that?"
"No," Leo said. "Please explain."
"It's just a joke," Ray said. "Among the models you use most. It's just, you know, you have mood shifts sometimes, you know, like, bipolar?"
"That's not how bipolar disorder works –"
"Right, I keep forgetting you did a BA in psych. You know what I mean, though, right? Sometimes you're an asshole with a heart of gold, sometimes you're a well-meaning sociopath with a friendly smile, Jekyll and Hyde."
Leo blinked. "Wait. Which one's Jekyll and which one's Hyde? They both sound – unflattering."
Ray's glow goes up by several watts.
"I mean, everyone has their own preference, honestly?" he said with a shrug. "The sociopath is Jeykll, because he's there more often - plus, you know, not really a sociopath, just charming as hell, but you can tell he's not really interested in anything you're saying or feeling, you know? - while the asshole is Hyde because we only see him once in a while. I usually prefer Jekyll, since I click really well with people who tend to be more distant and analytical about their emotions, but a lot of the models really like Hyde's whole aura-of-danger combined with a sort of secret-inaccessible-inner-friendliness thing. I don't know, it's just a bad joke. Models have a lot of those."
"Huh," Leo said.
"It doesn't mean anything," Ray said hastily. "It's not like I actually think you have an alternate personality or some sort of evil twin hidden in the closet –"
"I usually prefer the couch," Len, who had never been able to resist a good entrance line, said, poking his head up above said couch. "No one ever looks there."
Ray spun around and his jaw dropped.
His mouth moved, and sound came out, but it wasn't really coherent. His hands twitched in the air like baby birds that had just leapt out the nest and abruptly realized they never learned how to fly. He was utterly dumbfounded.
"I thought we agreed I was going to tell him," Leo said mildly. To be fair to Len, that had really been an irresistible set up.
Len smirked. "Hyde is better than Jekyll any day," he said with a shrug. "Do you know in the original movie version, it was pronounced GEE-kull instead of JEK-uhl?"
Leo, who had watched said original movie with Len, rolled his eyes at this bizarre attempt at flirting. Having found Mick at an early age, Len had never had to learn any flirting skills, real ones rather than the cons he ran on marks, nor had he ever had any interest in picking any skills in that field up – Leo was the one who interacted with people, after all, not Len, so why bother?
Len rolled his eyes back. He had no idea why Leo said his flirting was so terrible – puns and unnecessary movie trivia always seemed to work well for him, and the way Leo would sometimes cough down his hand that it was out of pity for a pretty face with an empty head was entirely uncalled for.
"There's two of you," Ray finally squeaked.
"Quick, this one," Len said.
"Shut up. You get yourself a quick one if you want one," Leo said. "I happen to prefer glowing."
"I noticed that..."
"There are two of you!"
"I think we broke him," Len said thoughtfully. "Oops. Sorry."
Leo gave Len a Look, receiving only a smirk in return.
(He'd never admit it, but he was maybe slightly regretting how he first reacted when Len brought Mick around. In his defense, he'd never thought that he'd be in the reverse situation – not that that was a defense.)
"Am I – is this a hallucination?" Ray demanded. "Did I get drunk and start seeing double or something? Are alternate universes real?!"
"I approve of that fact that that's your go-to thought about what's going on," Len said.
"No alternate universes," Leo said patiently. "Just twins."
"Identical twins," Len added. "In case you hadn't noticed."
"Very identical," Ray said faintly.
"To be fair, you and the other models managed to spot some differences, apparently, with your Jekyll and Hyde analysis," Leo said. He's still not entirely sure about what to do the 'well-meaning sociopath' part of that analysis. "Which puts you ahead of most people."
"Most police, certainly," Len drawled.
"But –" Ray said, clearly too distracted to pick up on Len's hint. "If you're twins – what's your name?"
They blinked at him.
"...Leonard Snart," Leo said. "That hasn't changed. Why would it have changed?"
"Then, what's his name?"
"Leonard Snart," Len said.
“I...what?”
"If it makes you feel better,” Len adds generously, “I go by Len while he goes by Leo. People get really insistent on using the nicknames for some reason.”
Even Lisa preferred them, though she did have a tendency to call them both Lenny that they thoroughly approved of.
"Oh," Ray said. "Is that why you got so angry when I called you Leo the other day? Because you were actually Len?"
"Long story," Leo said hastily.
"Which one of you –" Ray hesitated. "Never mind."
"I'm the one you've been interacting with," Leo said. "Not Len."
"I'm the one that pointed out that we’re married to Mick," Len said, a touch of acid in his voice. "Though, just so you know, we both consider ourselves bound by that."
"I see," Ray said faintly.
"Would you like a seat?" Leo asked, a little concerned that Ray was going to fall over. "You've had a shock."
"Yeah," Ray said, scrabbling for a chair. "Good idea."
"You can have some time to think about this –" Leo started, only for Len to interject, "But in the meantime, you can't tell anyone."
Ray nodded slowly. "Because – the police don't know?"
Leo gave Len another Look, this one triumphant. Len rolled his eyes – fine, maybe Ray wasn't as slow as previously assumed.
"That's right," Leo said.
"And – wait. All those times you've gotten stopped and questioned..."
"He wasn't lying when he said they had the wrong man," Len drawled, looking quite pleased. "Just not being entirely truthful, either."
"You're a thief?"
"A very good one."
"...oh. That's a lot to take in."
"Why don't you take a few days off to think about it?" Leo suggested. "I know this isn't exactly what you thought was going on."
"I mean, I think I always kinda thought you were a thief?" Ray said. "Some sort of James Bond-the Saint kind of deal, with the fashion stuff as a cover. I mean, that many policemen in that many countries can't all be wrong. I'm kind of happy you aren't, actually."
Leo smirked. This wasn't going as badly as he had feared.
"I think I will take those days off, though," Ray said, rubbing his face. "I – I mean, I knew you were with Rory, and I thought, you know, maybe you were polyamourous –"
"Or willing to cheat, at least," Len muttered, causing Ray to flush.
"– but I admit that I didn't consider – I didn't even think about there being two of you."
"Okay," Leo said. "Totally fine. You need processing time. Just, you know..."
"Don't mention it to anyone?"
"Right. Sorry."
"No, it's fine. I understand. I think."
Exit Ray, stage left.
"Well," Leo said. "That went – not unlike a trainwreck."
"Sure thing, Jekyll."
"Shut up, Hyde."
"What do we do if he only likes you?" Len asked, abruptly changing gears. "And not me?"
"I don't know," Leo confessed. "I mean, when I thought Mick was just yours, I figured he'd just take up some of your free time and I'd find someone to fill mine, but now we both have Mick as well...there's a sadly limited number of hours in the day."
"Well, you were doing a pretty good job of interacting with him mostly during your work and a little bit after work hours –"
"Yes, but presumably he'll want more at some point. Wouldn't you?"
"We'll see, I guess," Len said, a little doubtfully. "When Mick and I are out on a job, maybe..?"
"Ah-ha!" Leo exclaimed, pointing an accusing finger at Len. "You are planning on working with Mick again, despite everything."
Leo made a face. He hated it when Leo was right, but he thought to himself that perhaps he was. Len had somehow slid back into thinking of jobs as Len-and-Mick instead of just his own, all without him noticing.
The healing power of time.
Leo, for his part, was just happy that Len would stop working with that awful pair of psychotic lovers he sometimes teamed up with, Scudder and Dillon. Leo never trusted them about anything, and certainly not with Len's safety, but he trusted them even less now that Len didn't have Mick to back him up.
"Not until he's all the way better," Len said, conceding the point. And yes, damnit Leo, he'd do something about Scudder and Dillon; there was no need to look at him with that half-worried-half-smug expression. "At least not any jobs in Central. Maybe some outside as a way of warming up..."
Leo grinned.
Len, realizing, grinned back.
Neither of them could resist a good set-up.
"You know,” Leo drawled, relishing the moment. “If you’re looking for an expert in warming things up –"
Len threw one of the couch pillows at Leo, which they both agreed was the correct response.

Note
1-20 lololol
thank u for your pity savannah joke’s on all of my followers I am absolutely going to answer them all because I’m bored
1. who is the hardest character for you to write?
At the moment it’s MJ--but I’m slowly overcoming that writing block and getting to know her better as I write her. Otherwise...I don’t know, I rarely write for characters if I don’t feel I have a decent angle on them.
2. who is the easiest character for you to write?
Deadpan Snarkers, lol. Tony, Kanan, sometimes Jyn...though I used to like writing for Felicity a lot too because she’s very cute-funny instead of snarky-funny and it was interesting to play with.
3. How do you know if your writing is “in character”?
This is tough, because I think a lot of the fun of fanfic is that we play with what “in character” means, but in my writing, I imagine it all very cinematically--could I imagine the character being played that way by their actor, could I make this scene happen in some alternate universe tv show and feel like it meshes with the real thing (or what I would prefer the canon character was like, in some cases)?
4. Where do your story ideas come from?
It depends. Sometimes it’s seeing something that already exists and taking inspiration (EX: an AU, a trope, an episode of TV, a movie) and other times it’s a very specific scene in my head. (EX: Tony finding Peter in the cabin in your energy has not died. I had to iron out the details of the story as a whole, but I saw Peter’s cabin and Tony’s approach very clearly.)
5. Do you tell the people in your life that you write fics?
I used to, but now I’m more careful about it. My parents have always supported it, but they didn’t really get it. Friends I’ve had since high school are either fandom friends who read it or friends who I showed my writing to at the time. My roommate in college wrote some, so we’d talk about it sometimes. I don’t talk about it at work because it doesn’t really come up, but I don’t think my boss or anyone would think it’s too weird bc we’re all creatives.
6. What has been the hardest fic for you to write?
Invulnerable is off and on hard, just because it’s a very “I HAVE AN IDEA...aaaand now I have to make it into a whole Thing” process that I have with it. this was is the story of our lives was pretty tough just because it’s futurefic, and I was determined to get my ages and dates and things right, and with Star Wars that can be a whooooole monster.
7. What fic of yours makes you the most emotional?
Chapters 5 and 6 of Invulnerable made my eyes water for sure. I haven’t been through anything like it, but the emotional, physical places that I put Tony and Peter in for those chapters were really raw. A Foreign Feeling is pretty high up there now, because it took MONTHS of work with Savannah, and it was fun and emotional and we both had writers block at times but WE DID THE DAMN THING and it feels really good and weird to have it done. Also, you got me hoping for a miracle, because it’s THE HUG WE DESERVED!!!
8. What is a scene you wrote that you are most proud of?
The Vanity Fair article in i fell for mantle photographs is a point of pride for me. I don’t know why, I just always wanted to do something like it, and it feels sleek and modern and super in-universe.
9. Is there one character that you refuse to write? why?
I don’t have any hard and fast rules or anything, but it’s unlikely I’ll ever write for villains. I know some people get a kick of exploring their POVs, but I rarely do.
10. When you write fics, how much of canon are you willing to ignore/skip over?
It seems like a cop-out to say it depends, but it does. In general I’m pretty flexible (most commonly, in who lives and dies), but there’s a point where it essentially becomes original fiction with character names slapped on it, you know? I like to be able to recognize the characters I’m reading about, even if it’s in an AU.
11. Do you prefer to be cold or hot when you write?
Cold. I like to bundle up and sit in my little writing blanket cocoon.
12. What is your ideal writing area?
I do just about everything on my laptop, in my bed. It’s made for staying comfy while writing for hours.
13. How do you come up with your titles?
I’m a fan of using details and quotes from the stories themselves. I also like using songs/quotes as a title that have relation/meaning to the story. I just want things to connect and have meaning.
14. How do you come up with chapter titles?
Honestly, I usually don’t use chapter titles much. When I do, it’s pretty basic.
15. At what point in writing a fic, do you decide to quit?
Well, passion is a big part of it. If I don’t want to write the fic anymore...I won’t. There are also some points where I just...know it’s not going anywhere. If I can’t come up with the next section, if I’ve been stuck on one place for months and purposefully am writing everything else BUT that fic...it’s time to let it go. If an impulse idea makes me want to pick it back up, it’s always there, but I have a lot of WIPs and I try to prioritize and keep it fun by doing whatever I feel like doing.
16. How much of your personal life do you put into fics?
Too much? Not enough?? Tbh I’m inspired by events/people from my life more than I directly reference specific things. Like, 287 Miles, i like (the idea of) you, and the Twenty-Something series weren’t my college experience, but there were a lot of things inspired by campus life, stressors I experienced, or ways I wish my college life had been.
17. What is the most supportive comment you have gotten?
Most recently, the user Laronia on AO3 literally commented on EVERY SINGLE ONE OF MY MARVEL FICS. ALL OF THEM. AND THEN LEFT A GIANT, AMAZING COMMENT ON A Foreign Feeling. I am so incredibly touched about it. No one has ever done that before. I felt like a fucking superstar all day.
18. What is the most negative comment you have gotten?
Someone left comments on a couple of my Star Wars Rebels fics that were literally just. Fact correcting me. The most UM, ACTUALLY, bullshit. ON CANON DIVERGENT FICS. Like, no other commentary about the fic. They took the effort to sign in and comment as a guest--not a member, a guest with a username--just to “correct me”. Why. Anyway, in retaliation, I then took the effort to put those comments in the I’VE HAD ENOUGH OF THIS DUDE meme from It’s Always Sunny and sent it to a friend to make myself feel better.
19. How do you handle negative comments?
I really don’t get many, which has been a relief. I think a lot of us do extra research on things like canon timelines, medical jargon, etc. because we’ve experienced gatekeepers like the above commenter and it sucks. We’re terrified that with every fic we have to prove ourselves as “real fans” “worthy” of writing fic. I still do it, even though a part of me wants to be the kind of person that doesn’t spend an hour researching smoke inhalation treatments, what ages everyone was before the Blip, or what year x Star Wars battle happened. I just...try to be kind to my fellow writers and hope that karma comes back to me.
20. What story that you have written makes you the happiest to re-read?
The Cloak Verse is so soft, as a series. Everything in it is fluffy and whumpy and there just because I wanted it to exist. Also, everything I did for Pepperony Week 2019! I worked really hard on all of them, and every one came out really well imo. Again--they’re fics I wanted to read for them, so I made them. OH, and Honorary Stark. It’s EXCELLENT 5 Times fic in general, and I love when I get to do The OTP + The Parent&Child Relationship. (Plus, 3rd Person Perspective on The OTP!)

What was your favorite aspect of writing Ryou? What was your favorite hypothetical on that front?
I think, in all honesty, my favorite thing about writing Ryou is something that’s a little too big and a little too complicated to condense into a sentence or two, but I touched on it in Chapter 7 of The Monster in the Mirror. Hell, I named the chapter for it. In that chapter, Keith comes to talk to Ryou, and the changeling myth becomes a touchstone on which they begin to build a relationship that has nothing to do with Shiro. Keith (who’s autistic in that fic, as in all my fics) has always identified with the “fae child” in the changeling myth–the kid who doesn’t fit, who isn’t wanted, who’s missing something vital to humanity. It’s a feeling a lot of autistic people, myself included, have experienced at one point or another. So there’s Keith, all too familiar with trying to pass as something he’s not (neurotypical), and he sees Ryou, also trying to pass as someone he’s not (Shiro). Someone literally made to be a changeling.
And that sense of being an outsider is the one piece of Keith that Shiro has never totally been able to understand. It’s one solid, significant fact that Keith can hold up to Ryou and say, This is yours. Not Shiro’s. Yours.
Honestly? I’m already more than halfway to convinced that Ryou himself is autistic. This fandom is full of autistic headcanons, and I love it. As far as I’m concerned, Keith and Pidge are autistic. They just are. I’m very nearly to that point with Allura, too, and I think there’s a strong case to be made for atustic Coran. Hell, I’ve seen good arguments for autistic Lance and autistic Hunk, too, and while I don’t usually write them that way, I do write Lance as having ADHD (a “cousin” to autism) and Hunk as having (social/generalized) anxiety (which often coincides with autism.)
The one person on the castle-ship I’ve never been able to see as autistic is Shiro. He just… doesn’t have any of the traits that usually make me slam my hand down and say, There! That’s me! He understands people intuitively, he’s a master of tact and other norms of communication, he’s flexible/adaptable, there’s nothing about him that really screams “special interest” or “stimming”… I mean, if you’ve always headcanoned him as autistic, more power to you, but of all the reasons I love Shiro, seeing my autism reflected back at me has never been one of them.
Which is one of the reasons Shiro in season 3 stuck out to me. When he comes out in his new outfit and tries to fit back into the team, he just can’t. He tries. He says all the right words, does all the right things, and it just feels… off. It feels like me, when somebody decides that I should be in a leadership position, because that doesn’t come naturally to me.
(Sidebar: when the thought “autistic Kuron” first entered my head, I shoved it away, because autistic characters are already othered enough in their respective canons/fanons. I was wary of making the connection to the clone engineered by the enemy, not knowing how the fandom would react, not wanting it to turn into a sci fi version of the changeling myth. At its core, it’s the same reason I so violently rejected the Galra Keith theory back when it first started circulating. I was already firmly in camp autistic Keith and I didn’t want people coming in there and saying, “Oh, no, he’s just socially stunted because he’s an alien and doesn’t get human culture.” But the fandom, by and large, didn’t do that. Keith is Galra and autistic. Both. And the reason I’ve started to embrace autistic Kuron/Ryou is that the fandom hasn’t vilified him for being unable to pass. They’ve recognized that he’s struggling and that he needs the support of a family. And that’s… that’s really awesome, okay?)
And, now, look. I’m fairly set on the clone theory, primarily because of the etymology of Kuron in Operation Kuron (i.e. Kuron means clone–in Japanese of all languages. That cannot be a coincidence.) Shiro’s/Kuron’s behavior in season 3 is secondary to a theory I already hold, not proof in itself. I think there’s a lot of validity to the cautionary posts talking about how the changes in Shiro could be down to the fact that he’s jut been re-traumatized, pushed to his physical limits, and told to pull it together because his team needs him. But that’s not a case of either/or as far as I’m concerned. It’s both. It’s Shiro, an autistic who’s a social chameleon, who’s learned to pass incredibly well and has kept it up as a matter of routine, as a way to maintain some degree of control over a world that’s gone to shit. It’s Shiro, re-traumatized and no longer able to pass. It’s Shiro finally showing his autistic traits because he just does not have the spoons to hide them anymore.
tl;dr: The Shiro we saw in season 3 is autistic. Maybe he’s the real Shiro and simply can no longer pass as neurotypical because of the stress he’s under. Maybe it’s Kuron/Ryou and Haggar failed at replicating Shiro because Ryou is fundamentally a different person. She can make him look like Shiro, she can shove all of Shiro’s memories into his head, but autism is part of who he is, and no amount of magic can change that.

Joy To The World, 1, 4 and 5!
Hoo boy, so many questions!!! I hope you’re prepared for the deluge that’s gonna result...~ I’ll answer these tonight and finish the ones in the other messages tomorrow morning!
1. What inspired you to write the fic this way?
So. Over the last five or so years I’ve been writing fic, in all but the second year, I’ve written a special Christmas-related fic for Christmas. (And I did two the first year, so.) Christmas is a really important holiday to me and I really love Christmas-related stuff (the cheesier and sillier the better), so it became kind of a tradition. But this year, I was at a little bit of a loss. I knew I wanted to write Lams, because that’s my big thing right now. But how would I write Christmas Lams? Did they even properly ‘celebrate’ Christmas during that time period?? Or should I just go for an AU?
I researched it, and thankfully it turns out that the 18th century is around when people did start to celebrate Christmas in the modern sense (and it’s also when carols really started to come about, which is great because per tradition all my Christmas fic are titled after a carol), but that was just the beginning of the issue. When exactly would it be set? Valley Forge? But, uh... I highly doubted they would be really doing all that much at that point. But I couldn’t really think of any time outside of Lams AU that they’d be together. (And then I found out afterwards that Ham wasn’t even there for Christmas 1777, so, welp.) And I really couldn’t think of any kind of actual plot. I could have done a kind of meditation on their relationships to religion, but I didn’t know that much about which specific form of Christianity they belonged to, and I thought it was something that could be and HAD been done much better by other people. (Plus that’s not really my fave kind of fic to write to begin with.)
So, it wasn’t really working out that well. But still, I really kept trying. Through November, my working plan became almost set in stone: I’d do a combined historical and modern AU fic, switching back and forth between scenes, comparing themes (supply lists in VF compared with finding money for food over Christmas break in modern AU), sorta casually looking at the differences. When I gave it up, it was partly out of lack of interest in the themes, but my conscious reason was ‘I just don’t really care about modern AU Lams.’
...which came to the crux of the problem all along: I’m not really an AU person. Or rather, I’m very not an AU person. I’ve written very few AUs in my time, and almost all of them were historical AUs - certainly not modern day ones, and definitely not school AUs. I don’t have any, like, moral opposition - I can fully appreciate the transformative potential of full-setting AUs and find very interesting the interdependent communities that develop around AU-heavy fandoms as they essentially create their own accepted canons - but I just...don’t tend to like them. I’m very analytical!! The idea of just...MAKING UP not just one character or setting but basically a whole story just always seemed simultaneously too easy and too hard to me!!! Plus, I like to write really interesting and unusual things and try new styles, and one of the most basic points of interests for me in writing is asking what makes these characters and relationships unique, based on their precise personalities and backstories and combinations of traits. None of that lends well to full-setting AUs.
But. As I was mulling this terrible problem over, as usual, I was also running over in my head all kinds of various different characterisation ideas. This time, I was thinking about how it was interesting that Hamilton always seemed to be written in opposition to Henry Laurens, when IRL it seems they had a pretty decent acquaintanceship. And I was thinking about it, and I really started to think that, actually, someone in Hamilton’s point of view - who was constantly abandoned by his father, and desperate for his attention, and incredibly ambitious despite the circumstances of his birth - would be one of the WORST people to understand that an overly-controlling, overly-interested father who expects extremely highly of his son could be a negative influence. Which also added to another thought I’d been having. I always liked one quote from Chernow, that Laurens must have seen in Hamilton what a man who makes himself can do, and it always made me think that Hamilton must have been the same way - that he must have seen in Laurens the man he had always aimed to be. So, Laurens grew up in a good family, acknowledged and promoted by said family, with plenty of money and a great deal of opportunity. To Hamilton... yeah, it’d definitely be hard for him to see the problems with that. (And, you know, there IS a lot of privilege there!! It’s just, y’know, that mental illness doesn’t always listen to that.) But, those thoughts were kinda moot, because I really couldn’t think of any way to contrast these different experiences with fathers in historical verse.
And that’s when it came to me. What if I did a modern AU where Hamilton came down to visit the Laurens family for Christmas?
I didn’t have the time (or, really, the interest) to develop a full-on world for everyone, and a uni AU just seemed to be the most appropriate for this one, anyway. And it also did have a bit of appeal: it always kinda bugged me that in the AUs I read, Hamilton and Laurens never seemed to be studying law, even though that’s historically what they did do. As a law grad, I figured I might as well be the one to write it. (Though law in Australia is p different from in the US - there’s no separate law school, we just study it straight out of high school like anything else - but whatever.) And once I was doing THAT, it was hard for me to escape the fact that, in the real world, studying law hadn’t...exactly always been the best experience for me. Given that Laurens didn’t really want to study it either, it seemed appropriate to lean on those experiences a bit.
Aaand that’s where we really get to the meat of the inspiration behind it, heh. Which is to say: this is possibly the most autobiographical thing I’ve ever written...? I’ll say outright that a lot of it WAS entirely invented - my relationship with my family is nothing like John’s was in this, at all. But my anxieties over studying, and my worries about the future and what a career in law would lead to... yeah, that came from me haha. Because, to get kind of personal about it... well, I graduated July 2015. And in the time since then, I have been employed for about 2.5? months, total. The job scene here, in general and especially for law grads, is just that bad. (And, uh, there was a fair bit of personal fault in my lack of preparation for after I’d graduate? But, seriously, I was really anxious already...) And ever since then - particularly 2016 to the present - I’ve also had a lot of anxiety and depression and stuff going on. At the time I wrote the fic, it was in a position of leaning worse rather than better. So...I honestly don’t know if there was ever, like, a dispassionate fic in there safely cordoned off from my own projections, but if there was, it didn’t last long.
So, I got the idea, and wrote it all up pretty quickly in early December, just kinda ridin’ that catharsis of getting all that stuff out. (And it turned out to be even more relevant than I thought, as ‘trying to enjoy Christmas like you usually do when you’re really not happy’ also ended up a very autobiographical theme.) And that’s how it happened!
As for one or two other things:
I really really didn’t wanna get too into politics in the fic lmao. I don’t feel comfortable with more than the broadest strokes of Hamilton’s beliefs (I’m gonna GET THERE but Im still well rev-verse in Chernow) and I always feel uncomfortable about portraying historical figure in any better light than they deserve when it comes to specific matters. But I also wanted to have Laurens and Hamilton at least as POC because I also think it’s important to increase racial diversity in fanfic in the rare cases that we really get a clear choice. So, I tried to kinda portray that without really getting detailed about any activist stuff or whatever. Which is why in Ham’s argument with Henry he’s really not siding with anyone, he’s just an economics wonk who gets mad when people on both sides of the political aisle don’t make sure their numbers add up, lol. That was my best compromise. (And Philly kinda nudged me when I still got too far off-course;; haha!)
Hamilton has ADHD because: again, I wanted to actually officially write up neurodivergent characters into fic when I had the option of being specific (my Ham is always neurodivergent but obv I can’t explicitly write that into the text of historical verse), and it’s ADHD because......well, I could write a really long thing about that alone lmfao. And I feel like I kind of should in some ways because I know that a lot of people aren’t rly familiar with how ADHD tends to actually, like, feel, for real-life people, and if you aren’t then I KNOW this must sound like a really arbitrary or misguided HC. And I’d really love to write it up and expand education and all, but. It’s also something that hits really close and personal for me and, as someone who can be anxious for days straight over opening entirely innocuous tumblr messages... I just DK I could do it, atm;;;;; Someday I will though, I hope!!! (Tho I will say that I’m totally for all neurodivergent Ham HCs and that honestly my Classic Ham is also influenced by BD and BPD things so I’m p flexible about it.) (Actually I guess I CAN say that my HCs for Ham all involve disorders with extreme moods and mood swings and stuff and ADHD in its lesser known symptoms can absolutely include that, esp with Rejection-Sensitive Dysphoria, so yeah. That’s basically the large part of my reason for that headcanon right there lol.)
4. What's your favorite line of dialogue?
HM OH MAN, I’m not sure!!! Lemme skim it again real quick.
In terms of sheer characterisation efficiency, I always liked the idea of Henry Laurens’ introductory sentence being to complain about John not calling often enough. It’s just such a perfect combination of a) genuinely cares about his son and wants to hear from him, and b) is an asshole who has no idea whatsoever of the pressure he’s putting on his son without offering any concurrent praise or reassurance.
...so yeah I think I’ll leave it at that actually, since this thing is long enough already lol.
5. What part was hardest to write?
I was sitting here trying hard to remember if I really had trouble writing any part of the draft because there was one bit where I stalled briefly but it wasn’t really that bad and I couldn’t even really remember it and apart from that it was super smooth...until I remembered that editing counts as writing. And hoo fucking boy.
I was lucky enough to be able to have my fic beta-ed by Philly! Which I’m super grateful for and the fic is undoubtedly better for it! But it was a really difficult process for me because of my anxiety. And I needed to do it rather quickly, because of course I had to have it finished before Christmas, and my family actually was going away for Christmas where we wouldn’t have internet access.
So I get through almost all of the fic. It’s finally almost done. And then right at the end there’s a bit where Alex and John quickly exchange gifts on Christmas morning. Super short scene. And Philly pointed out that, actually, wouldn’t the rest of the family be taken-aback at them exchanging gifts without them?
And I kind of read that and sat back and. that was right. That was 100% correct. So like. What do I do??? Do I involve the other characters? But the original scene was like, three lines. and I don’t wanna have to write a whole new scene lmao. Do I take it out? But in a earlier scene, I’d had John express a worry that the present he’d gotten for Alex was awful and he really regretted it, and I kinda liked that in this final scene we see that actually he’d just forgotten WHY he’d bought it (he’d remembered Alex saying something about it), and I thought that was a nice thing about how anxiety can really fuck with even your memory and stuff bc in the end there genuinely was no reason to worry. It wasn’t necessary to the fic, but it only came about in the writing - I’m pretty sure the outline was just like ‘and then they exchange gifts or somethign??? IDK’ - and I didn’t want to get rid of it again. But then how do I justify them exchanging gifts alone???
And so that’s how I ended up just sitting there mournfully or pacing back and forth like p LEASE just SAVE ME, just GIVE ME AN OPTION, I have a HOLIDAY TO PACK FOR and THINGS TO DO and I just want this damn fic to be EDITED and DONE ALREADY. I came up with soo many possibilities, none of which satisfied me,lmao. and eventually after wayyyyyy too long of trying to figure it out I settled on something that seemed mostly plausible and then just. wrote it in and skimmed the rest of the fic and posted it lmao.
Which, honestly, is pretty typical proceedings. I tend to have the general ideas come pretty easily to me, and the actual writing is normally pretty smooth - it’s usually the editing where I start rocking back and forth and cursing myself for ever trying to write :’) (Luckily, at that point I’m close enough to the end that I can usually force it through...!!)
