What’s your most hated fandom characterization for each of the main 7?

hoo boy am i glad you asked. although i’m gonna be real, my issue is less with fandom characterization, because you do you i don’t give a shit, and more with how people go batty if you personally are not a fan of fanon characterizations.

like, lemme be obvious and talk about my biggest example. i am a brown eyed lance truther. we know this. the amount of weirdo comments, weirdo DMs, and weirdo asks i get is atrocious. i post a lot of them bc they’re so stupid they’re funny but the amount of people per week that tell me to kill myself is lowkey wild. the amount of people that love to say some variation of “i liked your fic but you ruined it by making lances eyes brown! his eyes are blue!” and i’ve checked other brown eyed truther’s fics — either they delete their comments better than me, or they do not get the same thing. idk what the deal is lol.

i will concede to the point that i’m a contrarian and annoying about it, but a list of the following non-fanon headcanons/characterizations i hold that have been commented on in some derisive way:

**the allura hate is ridiculous and largely rooted in anti-Blackness. it should not be a fight to say that she had a reason to feel betrayed by keith’s heritage, that she did not “get in the way” of klance, that her death was stupid and ridiculous, that she is often pushed over in favour of klance (not as in she’s less popular, but that her/her death are used as a plot device to further klance), and that she is as interesting, nuanced, and multifaceted as the rest of them.

***people, inevitably, feminize characters in fandoms (largely because many people in fandom are young women, i know i feminize characters simply bc i’m making them like me and i’m feminine lol), and my issue is that people (in the general sense, not everybody) love to feminize keith and then get really mad if anyone else is feminized. this is not about fem or trans woman keith btw. this is about people omega-ifying him and then losing their MINDS if i don’t share that headcanon.

****i literally only wrote this once and then never again because people lost their minds. but as much as i love bi lance, i think it’s interesting that usually, when we see “boy crazy” or “girl crazy” characters, especially if they have a lot of chemistry or homoerotic tension with a same-gender character, people are like oh ya that’s comphetting. that character is desperately trying to outrun the gay thoughts. but with lance, who was definitely girl crazy and cared more about having a girlfriend than actually dating and falling in love (think “mrs blue lion” — he didn’t give a fuck about who he was marrying, so long that it was a girl), calling him gay will have people saying you’re erasing bisexuality. as if he was not fucking straight in the show. so.

What was your favorite aspect of writing Ryou? What was your favorite hypothetical on that front?

I think, in all honesty, my favorite thing about writing Ryou is something that’s a little too big and a little too complicated to condense into a sentence or two, but I touched on it in Chapter 7 of The Monster in the Mirror. Hell, I named the chapter for it. In that chapter, Keith comes to talk to Ryou, and the changeling myth becomes a touchstone on which they begin to build a relationship that has nothing to do with Shiro. Keith (who’s autistic in that fic, as in all my fics) has always identified with the “fae child” in the changeling myth–the kid who doesn’t fit, who isn’t wanted, who’s missing something vital to humanity. It’s a feeling a lot of autistic people, myself included, have experienced at one point or another. So there’s Keith, all too familiar with trying to pass as something he’s not (neurotypical), and he sees Ryou, also trying to pass as someone he’s not (Shiro). Someone literally made to be a changeling.

And that sense of being an outsider is the one piece of Keith that Shiro has never totally been able to understand. It’s one solid, significant fact that Keith can hold up to Ryou and say, This is yours. Not Shiro’s. Yours.

Honestly? I’m already more than halfway to convinced that Ryou himself is autistic. This fandom is full of autistic headcanons, and I love it. As far as I’m concerned, Keith and Pidge are autistic. They just are. I’m very nearly to that point with Allura, too, and I think there’s a strong case to be made for atustic Coran. Hell, I’ve seen good arguments for autistic Lance and autistic Hunk, too, and while I don’t usually write them that way, I do write Lance as having ADHD (a “cousin” to autism) and Hunk as having (social/generalized) anxiety (which often coincides with autism.)

The one person on the castle-ship I’ve never been able to see as autistic is Shiro. He just… doesn’t have any of the traits that usually make me slam my hand down and say, There! That’s me! He understands people intuitively, he’s a master of tact and other norms of communication, he’s flexible/adaptable, there’s nothing about him that really screams “special interest” or “stimming”… I mean, if you’ve always headcanoned him as autistic, more power to you, but of all the reasons I love Shiro, seeing my autism reflected back at me has never been one of them.

Which is one of the reasons Shiro in season 3 stuck out to me. When he comes out in his new outfit and tries to fit back into the team, he just can’t. He tries. He says all the right words, does all the right things, and it just feels… off. It feels like me, when somebody decides that I should be in a leadership position, because that doesn’t come naturally to me.

(Sidebar: when the thought “autistic Kuron” first entered my head, I shoved it away, because autistic characters are already othered enough in their respective canons/fanons. I was wary of making the connection to the clone engineered by the enemy, not knowing how the fandom would react, not wanting it to turn into a sci fi version of the changeling myth. At its core, it’s the same reason I so violently rejected the Galra Keith theory back when it first started circulating. I was already firmly in camp autistic Keith and I didn’t want people coming in there and saying, “Oh, no, he’s just socially stunted because he’s an alien and doesn’t get human culture.” But the fandom, by and large, didn’t do that. Keith is Galra and autistic. Both. And the reason I’ve started to embrace autistic Kuron/Ryou is that the fandom hasn’t vilified him for being unable to pass. They’ve recognized that he’s struggling and that he needs the support of a family. And that’s… that’s really awesome, okay?)

And, now, look. I’m fairly set on the clone theory, primarily because of the etymology of Kuron in Operation Kuron (i.e. Kuron means clone–in Japanese of all languages. That cannot be a coincidence.) Shiro’s/Kuron’s behavior in season 3 is secondary to a theory I already hold, not proof in itself. I think there’s a lot of validity to the cautionary posts talking about how the changes in Shiro could be down to the fact that he’s jut been re-traumatized, pushed to his physical limits, and told to pull it together because his team needs him. But that’s not a case of either/or as far as I’m concerned. It’s both. It’s Shiro, an autistic who’s a social chameleon, who’s learned to pass incredibly well and has kept it up as a matter of routine, as a way to maintain some degree of control over a world that’s gone to shit. It’s Shiro, re-traumatized and no longer able to pass. It’s Shiro finally showing his autistic traits because he just does not have the spoons to hide them anymore.

tl;dr: The Shiro we saw in season 3 is autistic. Maybe he’s the real Shiro and simply can no longer pass as neurotypical because of the stress he’s under. Maybe it’s Kuron/Ryou and Haggar failed at replicating Shiro because Ryou is fundamentally a different person. She can make him look like Shiro, she can shove all of Shiro’s memories into his head, but autism is part of who he is, and no amount of magic can change that.

How did you discover the show? I discovered it through my dad. He was a fan of the 80s series when he was a child. He even has an old toy yellow lion and Hunk out on display. Around when season 2 was still new, he was basically like “Hey, you should check this series out! I think you’d like it. There’s also a character voiced by the same guy as Finn.” so we watched it together and bonded over it.

Was it love at first sight or did it take you a while to get into the show? I fell in love immediately and I hyperfixated on it for at least a year. It's still special to me despite all of its issues, and that hyperfixation still comes and goes.

Do you have a favorite episode(s)? There were so many good ones. I honestly don’t know what my favourite is, but to name a few:

Do you have a favorite Paladin? Lance was always my favourite, and Hunk is a very close second. I think I relate to them the most.

Do you have a favorite Lion? Blue. I always wanted to pilot Blue. Maybe because it’s one of my favourite colours, and I’ve also got a connection to water - being a Scorpio, living on the coastline, being interested in marine biology, and being a swimmer? Idk  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Do you have a favorite Alien Race? Whatever Plaxum, Blaytz and Gyrgan are. I wish we got to know more about the last two, especially.

Favorite side/other character(s)? I absolutely adore Coran. Outside of Team Voltron - Matt, Kolivan, Acxa, Rizavi and Veronica, and I was also really intrigued by Lotor before they messed him up and turned him into sOUP???

How/Why did you join the fandom? I got really involved in the fandom because I just loved the show, but the only people I could talk about it with irl was my dad and kind of my sister. My old main tumblr was just all VLD for that period of time, and I mostly posted fanart and some memes, gushed about Klance, and convinced thousands of people that Mothman-fan!Keith was 100% canon. It was great.

What are some of your headcanons?

Shiro has a younger brother that Keith reminds him of

And before their history was revealed, I thought Shiro was like Keith’s adoptive father, or at least a supportive family friend who took him in after his dad passed

Pidge is autistic and non-binary, because me too

Lance has ADHD, because me too

Lance and Hunk were childhood friends

Autistic, lactose intolerant, hippo-loving, Mothman-simping, gay, half-Galra, Korean-Texan cowboy Keith was wild and pretty funny to me, and I still subscribe to most of that lmao

What do you think is the best part of the show? The characters and their potential was always the main draw for me. They’re still so important to me. I also loved the art style, the alien designs, and big robot vs. monster fights are always fun to me.

What were your hopes and wishes for future episodes/seasons?

I knew Keith was gonna inherit the black lion but I choose not to shut up about black paladin Allura

More fleshed out backstories (which I’m working hard on for my rewrite rn)

Getting to know everyone’s families better

Shiro speaking some Japanese, Lance speaking some Spanish, or just the Paladins sharing more human culture with the Alteans rather than just the other way around.

*cough* Canon Klance, although I also like the idea of Allurance. I just didn’t like the way they ended up portraying it. They also didn’t do a very good job of shutting down Klance and convincing they weren’t also in love lmao

Just Lance being happy again tbh like wtf?

Did you stick it out until the end of the show? I ended up dropping the series around season 4. I don’t remember if it was because I was already bored or too disappointed to go on, or that part of the fandom got too much, or just because I changed hyperfixations and didn’t get around to finishing it. I learned what happened next through other people’s reactions and it was so disheartening, but I finally rewatched and finished it myself recently. It was a rushed blur, but it was nice to relive the good moments.

It’s only queer baiting of the creators tease something and then never deliver and even mock lgbt folks for having the audacity to ask for it. It’s why fandom has formed the way it has - fans creating what the creators won’t or will ever be able to do. I was never in the Supernatural fandom but watching from afar, I pitied them. I grew up liking Harry Potter, and while Drarry just didn’t do it for me, I like the open-ended concept of Albus Potter and Scorpius being friends or more. It meant a more open canvas to work out in my brain. Harry Potter as a series is very flawed but fandom back in the day was about just doing your own thing while enjoying the core concepts of a series while ditching the ones you didn’t like, and celebrating when you were validated in seeing the message that creators intended. But I digress.

JDS & LM have promised to fight for LGBT representation, and have explicitly said what they had in mind (real representation that’s meaningful) and hadn’t (space dad and the popularity of kl). So far I’ve trusted them, re-watched the series every time a new season comes up because then I can then take future info into account in the storytelling as well as look for the foreshadowing clues that make sense if you’re a decent/good writer.

If you’ve been watching stuff coming out of Dreamworks Animation and Studio Mir for as long as I’ve studied it, then you’d recognize it like I do, just takes some time is all.

Back when I was 17-18, I got back to watching Avatar because I heard it was a good series and when I was  21-22, Korra was starting to end/ending and the fandom was freaking out but I hadn’t really had the time because I was in college. But I binged on the series during christmas vacation of 2014 and then I was reading articles that the people who worked on Korra were already working on another future project, so then I kept watch on Studio Mir and what they were dishing out, because as I was in the middle of college, I wanted to have a future in media - whether it would be storyboarding in children’s animation, audio engineering, animation or concept art. These are all skills I have and am working on strengthening. 

So now to the point of why I don’t feel like I’ve been queerbaited. I can definitively say that growing up and also being autistic (questioning why people acted the way they did), with a fun overdose of heteronormativity (buying into it), I had conflicted emotions of being afab and then frequently hanging out with friends who were also afab and then adoring them so much that I told them they were like sisters to me. In retrospect I realize I was very queer and on top of that I was coming into my self-defined male identity and that while cis men in theory are cute, I liked a lot more than that and honestly I could not be more happy with the layering of how much Keith loves Shiro.

Keith knows that if he’s going to die, Shiro has to know how much he cares, how much he unconditionally loves him, and the most pure form of love is when it’s unconditional and unending. There’s a specific layering in Keith’s words.

Shiro hasn’t stopped pushing trying to kill Keith until he hears Keith’s declaration of his love.

Even when it’s not really “Shiro”, there’s a core part of Shiro and his memories that fights to do good. Kuron up until the last stage of Project Kuron fought for control against Haggar/Honerva at every turn, but this specific declaration of Keith’s feelings for Shiro breaks through to him to cause Shiro to hesitate(a big romance trope called The Power of Love with mind-controlled loved ones),

and it’s a big indicator to what Shiro at his core thinks of Keith, clone or otherwise. “Brother”, didn’t break Kuron but “I love you” did, and it made Kuron beg for Keith to give up fighting because deep down, I don’t think Shiro/Kuron wants to kill Keith because he loves him too, but he was also specific in saying that neither of them are leaving. He says this twice actually.

I have a feeling that while he was working to remove Keith away from the fleet, there was multiple reasons mixed here when he led Keith here specifically, especially if he has faith in him to do what he wants him to do. 

1. Destroy all the other clones so Honerva doesn’t ever control another version of him again. 

2. Keith kills him if he doesn’t manage to win. Which just leaves more clones to deal with.

3. Keith dies and it’s expected that Kuron is supposed to be expendable because Honerva literally has a bunch of clones right there, so kills himself because he cannot be deprogrammed of being brainwashed and crazy. (And even possibly dying of heartbreak having to take down Keith if he hadn’t confessed at the threat of his life).

4. They all go down together - and that’s it. Honerva wins by killing off two black paladins in one go and still has a bunch of clones laying around at her behest.

Shiro - the black lion was thankfully 5. Which is when Keith mercifully cut off Kuron’s arm, was willing to die with him, and was saved by Shiro who could never have seen any hope of him living a life again. He probably accepted he’d be there in the astral plane for eternity, and who knows if souls fade away there. There’s no telling if Keith’s connection hadn’t been strong enough, he might’ve faded, heck, forgotten what he looked like without a body when you’re just essence floating around. But we got lucky, and considering the lost weight of his right arm, he chose to fall against Keith’s chest, and people wonder if Shiro knows Keith loves him, but I think he does, especially if he had to watch that fight, and also having let Kuron pilot if it meant getting close to Keith again even for a moment. It’s core to Shiro’s being as it is to Keith’s being that they love each other, they are brother’s in arms, Shiro changed Keith’s life and shaped him into the man he is and nothing will change how much they love each other. The layering of my brother and my love only strengthens that love declaration in my honest opinion. Think of it as an art or writing piece. You start with your base, then work in the details that pull it together. My brother is the base. I love you is what holds it together.

Edit: I wanted to add that there is a difference between queer baiting and cryptoqueer romance, which is where the author intends to write a queer romance but is disallowed by censorship, corporate oversight, or other such things and it should be kept in mind because capitalism is a tricky evil thing at times. (I’m grateful that it kept Shiro alive but...I don’t always expect things like getting representation).

I was doing research for one of my original works, which I hope to try to publish one day. A thought struck me. Operation Kuron sounds like a lot like changelings. 

In folklore, a changeling is a fae that swaps places with a human child. Depending on the story, they can be an enchanted hunk of wood; an old, dying fae, a sick fae child or a regular old, unwanted fae child. Either way, they would be cranky, fussy and wreck havoc on you. In order to stop a child from being swapped, you’re supposed to put something iron by the child’s crib side. In order to expose the the changeling, you are supposed to either do something odd like cook beer in an acorn, so the changeling comments on it or set them on fire or drown them (believe it or not, there are cases of people drowning and setting suspected changelings on fire as modern as the 20th century).  High infant mortality rates at the time and the lack of knowledge about developmental disorders like autism gave rise to these myths as an explanation for them (though, as an autistic person, that makes the whole “lighting changelings on fire” thing more fucked up since they are lighting their own autistic infants on fire). 

While I don’t Kuron is a fairy for obvious reasons, the idea of the Galra swaping in one of their own on Team Voltron to rip them apart from the inside does remind me of said myths.

Four-and-a-half years ago, Keith lost the friend he was in love with, searched for any trace of Shiro, and found nothing. Resigned to never seeing him again, Keith honored a request that Shiro sent him: he tried to move on. He took a scholarship package and moved to Massachusetts. He tried to make himself a new life.

Now, Keith’s a broke, autistic history student at Kaltenecker University. He has trauma he doesn’t acknowledge, a depressive downswing that he’s ignoring, his Mom’s old knife, and a support network of about two people (his ex-girlfriend, Allura, and Kolivan, his academic advisor). His life’s a mess and his apartment’s a shit-hole, but at least they’re his.

Then, Keith yells at the punk band keeping him awake at four in the morning and the last thing that he expected drops into his life. Namely: Shiro, with long hair and new scars, but clean, sober, and away from his abusive ex. Worse, Shiro seems happy to have found Keith again.

This joy wouldn’t be bad if it made sense, but to Keith, it absolutely doesn’t. Shiro shouldn’t want Keith back in his life after what happened between them in Chicago, and there is definitely no way that Shiro ever loved Keith back — right?

It’s basically a love-letter to hurt/comfort dressed up as mutual pining Sheith.

Paladin: When did you start watching Voltron?My dear friend @writerforthetylwythteg got me to watch it with her sometime around Februari 2016. I have to admit I was hesitant to get into it at first, my only knowledge of it coming from what I saw of the… passionate… fandom, but I was quickly hooked.

KALTENECKER: Who is your favorite Voltron character?Pidge, without a doubt. I see so incredibly much of myself in her, and it’s incredible to see a smart nerdy character done so well on screen without the tropes you typically see coming with it. She’s not portrayed as an anti-social autist or idiot savant. She’s a person who happens to be good at math and computer science, and sometimes finds it hard to interact with people who aren’t. 

Kuron: Would you want a clone of yourself? Why?What a weird question. I honestly don’t really know. What’s the context of this? Is it an evil clone? A clone I have full control over? I guess I could do some major insurance fraud with a clone. But to live with… I’m not sure if I would like to live with myself for very long. 

Shiro: If you were given the chance to change the past, would you?A personal past? Cause there are some historical events I might want to change. Though that’d be a difficult decision to choose which. As for personal… I didn’t really have any friends or a social circle in high school, and in retrospect I didn’t have a lot of social experience and did some stupid things I wish I didn’t do. 

Allura: What would be the first thing you do if you wake up after 10,000 years?Oh jeez, probably check out all the new technology. And read up on SpaceWikipedia on what the new political situation is, since it’s probably as different from now as today is different from when humans first started farming. Such a society would probably be unrecognizable, though, and I’m not sure how well I could integrate in it. I like to think I’m pretty smart, but they’d probably laugh at what we now consider state-of-the-art. Come to think of it, I’d probably get captured by archeologists and made to answer a million questions about what 2000 AD was like, what these words mean, and what the hell stupid memes were about.
