Time Travel Fic: HOTD

After Lucerya falls into the ocean and drowns, she's taken in by the Stranger who shows her the past (Otto making Alicent visit the king and 'offer him comfort'), the present (her family's reaction to her death) and the future of House Targaryen (Daenerys Targaryen). The Stranger gives her a mission to fix her house so House Targaryen doesn't die out. Lucerya wakes up in DragonStone a few days AFTER taking out Aemond's eye and gets to work. She asks Daemon to train her with Rhaena and Baela so they aren't helpless. Lucerya asks her mother for more dragon riding tips and devours every book she finds relating to House Targaryen. She writes letters full of apologies to Aemond hoping to reconcile with him and get back on her good side because they used to be friends before the pig incident and taking his eye out. *cue wince. He doesn't reply obviously but Lucerya has dragon's blood in her veins and is stubborn so she writes to him daily.Years have passed and she's improved with her sword training so that she can disarm even Daemon Targaryen, her bond with Arrax has improved as well as her dragon riding and her letters to Aemond still haven't stopped. The day she goes back to King's landing for the trial and the dinner, she goes to her Grandfather Viserys's chambers to speak to him. Basically, the conversation: GRAMPS ME AND AEMOND TECHNICALLY GOT MARRIED THE DAY I TOOK HIS EYE OUT. Viserys who wants payback on Rhaeynra and Daemon and peace in his family: YES GRANDDAUGHTER LET'S GASLIGHT THEM ALL INTO THINKING YOU AND AEMOND GOT MARRIED THAT DAY. At the dinner, Viserys stands up and announces how happy he is that the young couple, Lucerya and Aemond are reunited after so long apart. Cue Horrified Looks from everyone in the room. Lucerya plays her part and stands, thanking her grandfather for the nice speech and talking about how wonderful it is to see her husband again. Aemond has had enough and basically demands what games Lucerya is playing. LUCERYA: GASLIGHT, GATEKEEP, GIRLBOSS. AEMOND: MANSPLAIN, MALEWIFE, MASNLAUGHTER. So Lucerya explains how the House of Targaryen marriages work. (SHE IS LYING OUT OF HER ASS RN BUT SHE'S APPLYING THE FIRE AND BLOOD TRADITION TO HER LIES SO IT SOUNDS REAL) Basically, the blood of the two getting married is spilt or cut or ripped out from each other- blood is taken. In this case, the blood he spilt from breaking her nose and the blood she spilt from taking out his eye. And the dragons of the two getting married breathe fire. In their case, Vhaghar and Arrax. But they were too young to consummate the marriage and tensions were HIGH at the moment so Viserys kept them apart and now they're back so they can get married properly YAYYYYYY

Harwin has flown three times, and only once did he not throw up.

It was a shock to everyone when you and Harwin married - at first it was a ruse, a fake relationship to keep your sister and nephews safe. But you began to fall for Harwin. Become protective over him. It wasn't long before he felt the same way. Both of you felt as if you were betraying Rhaenyra. But soon enough ... she had found Daemon.

Sadly enough, you are not able to be around your sister as often as you'd like - the rumour mill would still be turning.

But as a gesture of good faith, Rhaenyra and Harwin made you something to say you are their savour in this: a beautiful necklace.

Just aesthetically, I actually like Alicent's poster more. Symbolically? I prefer Rhaenyra's. To me, Rhaenyra shows she's determined to get back some dignity & Alicent is, as OP says, "trapped", and lost. The posters have a tinge of reversal of roles. Except I don't think being "trapped" is a good thing in most context at all! Certainly not this one.

Alicent's S2 funeral(?) headpiece is reminiscent of/taking inspiration of the halo of saints, Christ, the Virgin Mary/Mother in Heaven in medieval Catholic & Christian Orthodox iconography. And the Faith of the Seven is Catholic-inspired/coded. Down to the separation and divisions of "God", each being aspects rather than fully fledged gods in their own right. She is a devout follower, plus she is always trying to broadcast her rank as Queen Consort (supreme woman), who both in ASoIaF and real w/life was constantly compared to Mary, Mother of "God". Ii is very in line with her character both in the show & the book, so I have no problem with anyone pointing out or liking it.

However, this?

alicent being portrayed as the “pure mother” who is pious and devout (stifled by her own prison of faith) and rhaenyra as the “fallen angel” expelled from her own kingdom (for her sins of being a woman and bearing bastard children) who is now looking for revenge and fighting over the rule of heaven

is just more sexist bullshit. They could have just stopped at Rhaenyra being some sort of "fallen angel" trying to get back the power that's been taken from her. We have a whole fandom that worships the boots of Crowley from Good Omens, a fallen angel himself. We have more definitions apart from "disobedient loser" that the most tradcath and sexist religious people use to demean or oppress anyone who isn't white, cis, straight, male, and even rich.

We already know that Rhaenyra is full within her rights to "seek revenge"; in the Christian canon, Lucifer is not considered to be in any sort of right against God. They decided to focus on the canon interpretation & weaponize it against Rhaenyra, framing her usurpation as divine punishment from the "godlike" Alicent. Alicent becomes less human and her actions and deliberate choice to dress this way go unexamined because it feels natural to these people--she dresses that way bc she is godlike. And yet "(stifled by her own prison of faith)"; they don't even understand that they kinda "imprison" her by characterizing her the way they do! In this way, those people show how they believe their Alicent is the highest and best form of woman there should be, pedestalizing her simultaneously. Ironic.

For these people, the positive of Alicent's religious entrapment is that it realizes a fantasy reminiscent of those that plague Sansa stans-- gives them license to demand obedience and admiration from others without having to really work at earning respect.

Ali-Cole may as well be the first antagonist ship I have ever fawned over (non-book reader, team Black POV)

Individually, I think they are truly good people surrounded by bad influence. Alicent was raised as the conventional female in a game of powerful men. She had no choices of her own, and was torn between her love for Rhaenyra (friendship/romantic?) and devotion to her father. She was lied to, even in the memory of her [R] dead mother, by her only friend whom she chose over and not knowing it would cost her father's position and their eventual shame. She was a typical example of women in (GOT) politics who only lived to "squeeze out heirs" only to learn that the Princess did as she liked. Now the fear Otto planted in her had matured and she is channeling it to her children; I also refuse to believe she doesn't love them.

Cole was (very) devoted to his duty. Many would say he could have easily said "no" to the Princess but disregard the possibility that she has the power and influence to make up a story to save herself from the imminent shame (consider how she made up the story to Alicent). Now he looks up to Alicent as an epitome of righteousness because of her interrupting his suicide mission and having forgiven him despite his "sin".

I'm a multishipper of a lot of fandoms and HOTD is no exception.

HOTD has a lot of problematic ships but oh well, they're war criminals anyway so what can you do 🤷🤷🤷🤷.

Green stans rambling about how they hate Rhaegar but also saying they have nor problem with Daemon and Nettles will never make sense to me... not that anything they say makes sense. They hate Rhaegar for having sex with a 14-years-old girl and abandoning his sickly wife and their children... but still want to see Daemon prey on a Black teen girl and abandoning his grieving wife and his children. They really have nothing in their big ass heads but reflexive contrarianism.

Just saw a post on Twitter about Daemyras hating Rhaegar (I refuse to call it "X").

Lyanna was 16, not 14. Not much better, but it reveals a continuous tactic green stans (or just shows ignorance) use to demonize any person of the black faction or allegiance, usually a Targ.

Green stans do this assumption of age/lowering likely ages to Gwayne Hightower as well, saying he was 14 in that joust with Daemon and ignoring how 14-16 year knighted boys were pretty uncommon and how there is no SOLID proof that Gwayne was 14 when he participated in the joust when Cole (not Daemon) canonically unhorsed him. While Cole was 31.
