Fic rec : In Your Head, by Story_Monger (vld, hance)

Today I wanted to share a delightful hance fic.

I really adored the characterization, the writing, the world-building! I love how you see Hunk and Lance's relationship grow, but also the exploration of Hunk's anxiety, and of the telepathic bonds the paladins form with the Lions and with each other while forming Voltron.

The writing is so good, and I really enjoyed how Story_Monger writes Hunk's POV. It's particularly striking when you compare it to other fics Story_Monger has written, such has Hound, which is Keith's POV (if you haven't read it. Do yourself a favor and read that one too!). The way they write Hunk's thought process is so different from how they write Keith's!!! and the other paladins!!!

I was so happy to find they had written hance, because I was missing this ship, and I really enjoyed it but also all the relationship between the characters and the found family feels! <3

Narti. She is legit the scariest villain in VLD. Besides Haggar.

That Shiro is the resident damsel in distress lololol. All jokes aside, though, Shiro is an interesting character because he breaks stereotypes and has PTSD (which none of his teammates get irritated with). Shiro flips a lot of the usual characteristics on their heads and I appreciate how complex he is. I would die for Shiro metas. Also touch-starved Keith.

11. Favorite fanfic?

hound by story_monger.  This story...was incredible. The author has an incredible sense of place in their writing. Wow. Just wow. And they did a great job with all the characters. And the prose is just...so beautiful, I cry. The plot was put together well and they used flashbacks very well (note: I am very, very picky with my flashbacks and prologues). I loved it. And I don't reread things very often, but I'm definitely going to re-read this one and tell all of my friends about it. PLEASE read it. PLEASE. You will not regret it.

I follow you on Deviant Art and I discovered my favorite Voltron fanfictions thanks to your fanarts. How did you find them? I loved, among the others, "Where the light doesn’t reach", "Eternal Night", Discordiansamba's ones and "Desideratum": do you have more suggestions? We could do an exchange of fanfiction reviews if you want. I like long, well-written stories with Keith as a main character, space worldbuilding and deep emotions. With the Galra Keith trope also.

Oh, that is a very interesting question, and honestly, it varies from day to day. I think I do have a couple of posts around with some fic recs too..

Okay, I just answered 25, but ANOTHER amazing fic that I think is under-appreciated but everyone should read would be Casting Shadows by BlackFriar or hound by story_monger, both Keith-centric fics with incredible, compelling plots, great characterization, and discussions of past child abuse. Both harrowing, both amazing, both gen, both long and incredibly satisfying.

OKAY SO, here is a list of gen/platonic fics that are MOSTLY Keith-centric: 

SUPER FAVOURITES: 

These are the ones that are particularly well-written, in-character, or just have a unique and interesting plot. 

Interstice by prettyshiroic (one-shot, 34790 words)

In pursuit of Lotor, the paladins find themselves thrown into a pressing situation deep in the Orconia system. Tensions run high on planet Tukarius, with the future of the universe depending on securing an unexpected alliance. It starts with diplomacy, and it just might end with Keith.

aaah this one was just uploaded a couple days ago but it’s already one of my fav fics ever?? REALLY well characterised, and it packs a big ol’ emotional punch. Very satisfying ending, too, with fantastic character growth. You can tell the author put a lot of love into this. And it has some great platonic klance moments, which y’all know is my jam. 

Hound by story_monger (multi-chapter, 47561 words)

Keith has a lot of practice being alone; you might almost say he’s good at it. When he finds himself seriously injured and stranded on an unknown planet, he knows he’s not alone there. And here’s the worst part: even after rescue and after things return to normal, Keith gets the distinct sense that whatever was on that planet has followed him. He doesn’t have proof. But he knows it’s there. He knows it’s not going to stop until it gets what it wants. 

Another of my absolute favourites. Really engaging plot, some goddamn beautiful prose and a lot of well-written tension. It’s tagged as a horror fic, and there are some potentially sensitive themes (check the tags!) but I promise it’s nothing too graphic, and the ending was actually pretty sweet. The fic deals with a lot of time skips, the first half of each chapter dedicated to the year Keith spent in the desert, and the latter half dealing with the situation in present-time. That setup was used super effectively, and I loved it a lot!! 

When the Cat’s Away by VelkynKarma (multi-chapter, 22758 words)

Fresh after the Olkari liberation, the Voltron Alliance is contacted for assistance in rescuing valuable young hostages from their Galra occupiers. Voltron accepts the challenge, but when the prison break proves to be more complicated than anticipated, they need to change up their tactics…and rely on a few unexpected, and extremely tiny, allies.

Keith is all for defeating the Galra and rescuing the hostages, but he’s not entirely certain how to feel about his newest paladin partner being a mouse, and not a Lion.

Keith has to partner with one of the mice for an infiltration mission at a prison facility. Literally just 4 chapters of Keith kicking ass and bonding with Chuchule. It’s cute and I love it. The mouse is the most badass character in this fic.

The empire is not as defeated as the team thought, which make’s Shiro’s disappearance that much more bitter. Everyone’s a little lost and confused, some physically, some mentally. No one knows what’s going on, and honestly the appearance of some Prince guy is the last thing they wanted.

But they’ll be damned if they let this prince stand in their way of finding Shiro.

A post-season 2 fic. It’s part of a series, and I recommend reading all of the stories because they’re all great!! This is less Keith-centric than the others on this list, and everyone gets their fair share of time in the spotlight, but there’s some great stuff in here about Keith struggling to be the Black Paladin. A lot of team bonding and the Paladins learning some neat Avatar-style bending. 

Black by Any Other Color by mckinlily (one-shot, 4430 words)

Team Voltron is in shambles. Lost and hurting in the wake of Shiro’s disappearance, they can hardly stand each other, let alone work together. And in the midst of this, Hunk finds Keith in the Black Lion’s hangar.

Hunk learns something about Keith, leadership, and his role as the Yellow Paladin.

This one is really more of a Hunk fic than a Keith one, but has some awesome hurt/comfort between the two. Lovin’ that good good Heith friendship, and some focus on Hunk character growth.

Pillar in the Dark by VelkynKarma (one-shot, 12930 words)

Hunk always gets the worst missions. But when Keith starts acting strange on their recon mission to find more allies against the Galra Empire, he starts to think maybe this is the worst one of all.

Listen I just really love Hunk, okay? Another great Hunk and Keith fic with Hunk looking out for his friends. The illness in this fic is a tad more graphic than most of the other stuff on this list. I suggest reading the author’s notes before reading this, just in case it’s something that might be upsetting for you.

Recoil/Release by Cheshyr (multi-chapter, 22391 words)

When Keith is bitten by an alien creature with venom that causes your dominant emotions to be amplified, the team is ready for a day of dealing with an incredibly angry paladin.

Which means they’re not ready at all for what actually happens.

Read the tags on this one, it contains some sensitive themes. Maybe not the most in-character fic, seeing as a lot of it relies on speculation and headcanons for Keith’s past, but I still added it to my favs because the idea was super interesting and it contains a lot of those great found-family feels. Keith gets bitten by a gross space fish that amplifies his emotions, and has an all-round miserable time in which he is very, very afraid.

Scattered by avidbeader (multi-chapter, ongoing, currently 72195 words)

Separated by Haggar’s parting shot, the Alteans and their new Paladins must regroup and find one another across the galaxies. Along the way, they will discover tragedy, treachery, and hope.

Post season-one fic. It’s kinda Keith-centric towards the latter end of things, but this is another one that focuses on the whole team. Everyone’s having their own adventures after being split up by the wormhole incident. Lots of family feels. And only one chapter to go before the conclusion!! 

No Greater Gift by usernicole (one-shot, 20062 words)

Keith gets a cat, learns the True Meaning of Family, and falls in love. In that order.

This one is actually klance, but it’s fairly mild and mostly comes in towards the end of the fic. I had to add it to this list because I think it might have actually cured my depression?? Keith accidentally adopts a cat that sneaks aboard his lion and many shenanigans are had in trying to keep his new pet a secret.

1. How did you come up with your username and what does it mean?

There’s a book called Dove Isabeau that I loved as a kid, and also I loved the movie Ladyhawk, and Isabeau was one of the main characters.

2. Which fanfic of yours has the most feedback? (bookmarks/subscriptions/hits/kudos).

Room with a View (although Can’t Take the Sky From Me was a very close second  - I had to do actual math to figure it out; I’m impressed I remember how to math.)

3. What is your AO3 profile icon, and why did you choose it?

I don’t have one. I never bothered to upload it. If I did, it would be the same as the one for this account. It’s my cat Nibbs laying on my foot not long after we found him in my parents’ backyard. I use it because he’s cute and fluffy, and because I don’t like pictures of me floating around the internet.

4. Do you have any regular/favourite commenters?

I love all my commenters! It’s always exciting to get the notice that someone took the time to comment and I go back and reread them all all the time.

@maychorian​ has commented on a bunch of my Voltron fics (almost all of them I think), and I’m always super excited when I see her comments because she leaves such excellent and well thought out ones.

5. Is there a fanfic that you keep going back to read again and again?

Hound by story_monger I come back to because it’s so well done. The writing is fantastic, and the sense of suspense is amazing, and I really love the way it dealt with different layers of trauma and wove together the way past trauma continued to impact how present trauma was processed and dealt with. Plus the team was wonderfully tender with Keith, and he got cuddles.

Hyggelig by heyheroics I’ve gone back and reread a couple times. It is an example of the ever rare, non-romantic Keith and Lance center story. Well written and even though it’s not finished, the chapters read as short stories, so I’m not left with cliff hangers. I’m always excited when it updates.

I reread pieces from @maychorian​ all the time, particularly from the Boom Crash series and the Dream Seam series (*whispers* a lot of the time I skip straight to the cuddles. She writes the best cuddles.)

The Raised by Lions series by @eastofthemoon​ I like to go back and reread. Red and her strange furless cub are super fun to read about, and then Shiro comes along and there is even more fluff and cuddles.

Basically there’s a shortage of platonic fluff and cuddles in the Voltron fandom and when I run out, I go back and re-read my favorite cuddles.

I have like 12 bookmarked and 4 subscriptions. I always forget that’s a thing you can do on AO3.

7. Which AU do you find yourself writing the most?

.... so many. I’ve been working on The Five Lion Cafe au lately, trying to finish up the next one (almost done *fingers crossed*), and Mermaid Rescue and Rehab Inc. is up next on my list to finish, so I’ve been picking on that. 

I’d like to get back to Babe’s in Space at some point. I have general outlines for lots of short stories in that AU, and there actually is a bigger over arching plot if I ever get to it.

9. Is there something you’d like to write about but are afraid of people judging you for it? (Feeling brave? If so, share it!)

Mostly platonic physical intimacy, just because I don’t want to deal with it being labeled as romantic or shippy (I guess that’s not so much a fear of being judged as just not feeling like dealing with other people’s reactions). Once something is posted, you have no control over how it’s received or interpreted. That’s just the nature of publishing something; you have to let it go (or drive yourself crazy trying to force people to see it only the way you want, which is just not worth the time or energy).

Because of that, I sometimes pull back from writing a scene as intimate as I’d like, or I choose a slightly different approach to it, just because I don’t want to deal with seeing it labeled as a ship in the tags and comments.

10. Is there anything you would like to be better at? Writing certain scenes or genres, replying to comments, updating better, etc.

Action sequences and creating suspense. It’s hard to translate the movie-like images in my head into words for action sequences. I watch a lot of youtube videos for reference when I’m trying to write them.

And suspense, when done well, is just a great thing to be able to do. It keeps the reader engaged and makes the piece more exciting.

Also replying to comments! They mean so much to me, and I’m so terrible at replying.

11. Do you write rarepairs or popular ships more often?

Not really? I guess Ronin and Tara from Epic qualify as a rarepair just because the fandom for Epic is so small. I think the idea of Ezor and Kolivan from Voltron being a crack pair (not one that ever would or should show up in canon) is hysterical, but I haven’t written anything for them yet.

I really just don’t ship much in general.

12. How many stories have you posted on AO3 to this day (finished and unfinished)?

As of December 22, 2018, I have 49 stories up on AO3, all of them finished. I never start posting a story unless it’s already done.

13. How many stories do you have saved in/with your writing program?

So, that’s really hard to calculate. For every fandom I have what amounts to a dump document where I write random scenes and stories that I’m not sure will go any where, in addition to that I have:

Epic - 14 docs, most of those are probably single stories

ROTG - 9 docs, but I don’t think I separated out many of the WIPs from my main dump doc, so there’s probably more WIP there.

Voltron - 15 docs, but some of those documents are for series, so there’s might be multiple WIPs in the document.

And that’s just the unfinished stuff. I didn’t include the stories that are done. I usually keep those on my hard drive too because I don’t trust the internet not to suddenly eat my work.

14. Do you write down story ideas, or just keep them in your head?

I keep them in my head way too often, then go back to stories I’ve set down for a couple months (or years) and don’t remember what was going to happen. I’m trying to get better about writing out at least a general outline for stories so that doesn’t happen.

15. Have you ever co-authored a story?

I have co-authored with @eastofthemoon and @ladydouji. I’m kind of a flake about writing though and I’m really bad at keeping deadlines with something I just do for fun, so I don’t team up very often.

16. How did you discover AO3?

Google search for fanfiction because there wasn’t enough decent stuff on ff.net.

17. Do you consider yourself to be a popular or famous author in your fandom(s) on AO3?

I don’t think so? I don’t pay much attention so I don’t have much bases for comparison.

18. Do you have a nickname or fandom name for your readers?

Nope.

19. Was there an author who inspired or encouraged you to write?

I read a lot growing up (not so much now - grad school does a really good job burning you out when it comes to reading). I loved fantasy mostly, and a little bit of sci-fi, although that’s never been a super sharp distinction for me.

Patricia McKillip is my favorite author. I absolutely love the way she writes and the way she crafts stories. I really enjoyed Jane Yolen, and Bruce Coville too.

20. What writing advice would you give to a beginning author?

I really like Neil Gaiman’s 8 Rules of Writing.

The most important thing you can do is write. Get the words on the paper. That’s really the hardest part. I like his last rule best though “Write your story as it needs to be written. Write it honestly and tell it as best you can.”

21. Do you plot out your stories, or do you just figure it out as you go?

I usually know where they’re going (in my head at least, by the time I actually start getting words on the page), but sometimes they end up taking unexpected turns or new scenes show up out of now where while I’m writing. That’s part of what makes writing exciting. 

22. Have you ever gotten a bad comment on a story? If so, what did you do?

Nothing terrible, but a few (at least one of which went over my head until years later because they were being sarcastic).

I find I have an increasingly low reserve of energy, and things like that are not worth spending it on. I just ignore them.

23. Is there a certain type of scene that you have a hard time writing? (action, smut, etc..)

Interpersonal conflict! Why would these two normally rational people who care about each other let a thing escalate to the point of them actually fighting over it, or having it damaging their relationship, or coming to blows over it? And how do I write that in a way that doesn’t sound contrived and is in character to everyone involved.

24. What story(s) are you working on now?

Right now I’m working on finishing up the next Five Lions Cafe story, and also working on the last of the Mermaid Rescue and Rehab series.

I’m also working on a story that is probably going to be called Bad Moon on the Rise, and is focused on Lance and the Red Lion’s bond (and also has quintessence vampires).

25. Do you plan your next project(s) before you finish your current ongoing story(s)?

Yes! My brain never stops planning stories. Never.

26. Do you have a daily writing goal set for yourself?

Not really. Sometimes I’ll got through stretches where I write a lot, and other times my brain just melts and refuses to make words.

27. Do you think you’ve improved as a writer since you first started?

Yes! Even just going back a few years, but I’ve been writing since I was in elementary school, so there has been a great deal of improvement from the epic and fully illustrated “There are dinosaur ghosts living in our playground” that I wrote in first grade (and tried to convince my teacher was true).

28. What is your favorite story that you’ve written?

It’s actually not even up on AO3. It’s the only Narnia fanfic I ever wrote, and it’s called Refuge. One of those things that just felt unfinished and unaddressed in the Prince Caspian movie, and I like how I addressed it.

29. What is your least favorite story that you’ve written?

*Snorts* Thankfully lost to the great ether of individual fan sites that no longer exist, I had some CATS fanfics that were pretty terrible.

There’s also some Ronin Warriors stuff, and I think some stuff from the original Voltron dub, that’s pretty terrible, but I don’t have the heart to take down because people were actually kind enough to leave nice comments on them.

30. Where do you see yourself (as a writer) in 5 years?

The same, but hopefully better at it. I don’t really have any aspirations to be a professional writer. I’m happy just doing it for fun.

31. What is the easiest thing about writing?

The stories!

Putting the words on the page!

Because it’s fun! And challenging! And it gets the things in my head out of my head!

Summary: Keith has a lot of practice being alone; you might almost say he's good at it. When he finds himself seriously injured and stranded on an unknown planet, he knows he's not alone there. And here's the worst part: even after rescue and after things return to normal, Keith gets the distinct sense that whatever was on that planet has followed him. He doesn't have proof. But he knows it's there. He knows it's not going to stop until it gets what it wants.

Hound is incredible on all levels. It is an artistic, gorgeously written character study, full of suspense and horror that had me on the edge of my seat at all times. I loved the transitions between THEN (the sections of the story that take place the year Keith was alone in the desert) and the NOW. Keith’s backstory is a real mystery still, and this story uses it’s head cannons to the fullest, never feeling out of character or out of place. The wonderful platonic affection the paladins shower each other with is adorable and refreshing between the bits of heart wrenching angst and spine tingling horror, and all around this fanfic seems to know Keith even better than the show writers. It’s not only one of my favorite fanfics, it’s probably one of my favorite pieces of fiction I’ve ever read, period. 

WARNING mentions past child abuse but it stays away from graphic details.

Recoil/Release by Cheshyr 

Chapters: 13  Status: Complete  Ships: None Rating: Teen and Up

Summary: When Keith is bitten by an alien creature with venom that causes your dominant emotions to be amplified, the team is ready for a day of dealing with an incredibly angry paladin.

Which means they're not ready at all for what actually happens.

As a person who suffers from panic attacks and anxiety, this one really hits close to home. Keith’s insecurities and fears, amplified to an impossible measure thanks to the alien creatures venom keeps the stakes high, and is backed up with solid writing, dialogue, and character interactions (seriously I LIVE for best friend Pidge&Keith). The angst is heartbreaking, the humor will have you laughing out loud, and the heart felt moments between our favorite space team will leave you feeling warm and cozy for days. It’s not always perfect, but it’s definitely a worthwhile read.                                        

WARNING: As someone who suffers from panic attacks and anxiety I did have to take a small break from time to time. The panic attacks and anxiety are very VERY well written. The child abuse is barely mentioned and more implied than anything  (never really described or shown ) but I’ll still put a warning. 

Running Flat by SKayLanphear 

Chapters: 2 Status: Complete Ships: Klance Rating: Mature

Tags: Romance, Thought-Sharing, Pining, Longing, Silly Boys

Summary: Lance, like all the other paladins, is finally getting used to the “mind meld” they all have to indulge in when controlling their lions. Until someone’s uncontrollable crush comes in and knocks them all back in surprise. It’s a crush that circles persistently through their thoughts and only gets stronger as time goes on, until they begin to realize this might be a bit more serious than the term “crush” implies.

Meanwhile, the unfortunate paladin behind it all is trying desperately to bury the feelings away, yet failing at every turn.

-I find SKayLanphear to be a master of character, and while this fic is not completely Keith-centric (since it’s sometimes told in Lance’s POV) I believe Skay has a wonderful grasp on Keith’s voice, and who he is as a person. I love the way this story takes the interesting concept of mind melding that was introduced in season 1 and fully explores it. Add in some angst and romance,and you got yourself a great fic. Skay’s A+ writing and interesting premise makes for a short and sweet story with a hefty emotional punch, and it will most definitely leave a mark on your heart.

Nothing Can Breathe in Space by Idrilka

Chapters: 4 Status: Complete Ships: Sheith Rating: Explicit

Tags: Backstory, Pre-Canon, Canon Era, Mutual Pining, Unresolved Tension, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder - PTSD, Slow Burn, First Time, Friends to Lovers

Summary: The truth is: what Keith wants or doesn’t want won’t bring Shiro back.

The truth is: nothing can breathe in space. 

(Or: the story of how Keith and Shiro come together, come apart, and come together again.)

I desperately want to know about the back story of Keith and Shiro when they were at the Garrison and this fic is a good way to scratch that itch. While the story is obviously told through a more romantic lens then it probably will in canon, it doesn’t feel overly sappy or out of character. Filled to the brim with angst, this story of discovery, loss, and re-discovery (told in Idrilka’s fantastic interpretation of Keith’s voice) will probably make you cry. But it will also fill you with hope, and an excitement for the day we get to see Keith and Shiro’s actual backstory in canon. 

WARNING: There will be feels. Also, PTSD. And some adult shows of affection. All very tasteful in my opinion, but just be warned that it’s there. 

Call Me, Beep Me by Orphan_Account

Chapters: 10 Status: Complete Ships: Klance, Minor Shallura 

Rating: General Audiences

Summary: (00:31) Do you think she gave me the wrong number on purpose? (00:31) Or was it a genuine mistake? (00:32) Like maybe she writes funny and I misread it? (00:32) Some of the numbers do look a little dodgy... (00:33) Cause, you know, her threes could very easily be poorly formed eights? And maybe she writes her sevens like her ones? (00:45) What (00:46) The (00:46) Fuck??? (00:47) Oh good, you are awake!

Where Lance messages the wrong number and things kind of snowball from there

This fic is hilarious. Written almost completely as an epistolary novel (the chosen form text messages) this fic has as much fun with itself as you do reading it. It isn’t always easy to keep the essence of the characters the same when placing them in alternate universes with new alternate lives, but this fic does a fantastic job. The character dialogue is fast and smart, their interactions funny and relatable, the romance is adorable and slow-burning, and the plot is great with a satisfying conclusion. BONUS: If you love Pidge and Keith as best friends the way I do, you'll love them in this fic. It is one of my biggest disappointments that I will never know who actually wrote this.

Fragile: Handle With Care by EchoResonance

Summary: Shiro's heard all sorts of stories about soulmates. He's seen the stories in action. He's seen his father knock his hip against the corner of the counter and watched the bruise bloom on his mother's. He watched his friend get a tattoo and seen another friend with the fading remnants of that very same mark. It was a magical moment for some people.

Shiro and his soulmate were not those people.

An AU in which the marks that one person receives, the other also bears temporarily. And although Shiro has had few accidents and has never been struck a day in his life, it is very rare that his skin isn't a painting of reds, blues, and purples

Although this story is actually written mostly from Shiro’s point of view, Keith is just SO Keith in it, that I had to include it in the list. I have always had an interest in Soulmate au’s, and while marks from your skin appearing on your soulmates skin isn’t exactly new, the added feature of your soulmate feeling the pain you feel kind of is (at least to me). I wanted to know how someone as private as Keith would react to this, and this fic delivered. 

This fic is beautiful. Full of all kinds of emotions, beautiful writing, an interesting premise, and a good grasp on the characters. Seeing the characters we know and love play out in this new world they’ve been put in is an emotional roller coaster that I never want to get off of. 

WARNING: There is definitely sensitive and triggering material in this fic. Please read the tags carefully. While the abuse is never grossly graphic or shown in great detail, do not continue to read it if you feel it will have an effect on your mental/emotional well being.

A Horse To Water by SKayLanphear

Summary: Lance moves to the country and meets a hot-headed cowboy intent on being as difficult as possible. Despite his efforts, however, Keith merely inspires Lance to wonder at the pros of saving a horse and riding a cowboy.

If anyone was going to make it onto this list twice, it would be Skay. Back with another Klance fic (once again with rotating POV), but this time in it for the long haul. This fic is so much fun and drama so far. Great premise, fresh setting, excellent writing and grasp of character,  and horses. FREAKING. BEAUTIFUL. HORSES.  But don’t worry, the angst is there, bubbling just underneath the skin, and I can’t wait for it to come in full (which it will just you wait). I am really excited to read this fic as it continues, and see how the characters we know and love interact in these new (but fitting) roles they have been given.  Plus come on guys, it has cow-boy Keith. COW. BOY. KEITH!

I read this entire thing in one long stretch and I don’t regret a single moment. The story just grabbed me up in its fist and dragged me along. Every time I open up a huge story like this and start reading, I think, “Okay, fic. Seduce me.” And this one TOTALLY did. Can’t recommend it highly enough. There are some very unsettling and scary moments, as well as ones of great beauty, and some tip-top supportiveness and comforting. Wonderful, wonderful fic. Pay attention to the title and the way the meaning of it changes, too.

I have been reading plenty of fic in the last several months. There have been fun stories, sweet stories, action-packed stories, gut-punching and tear-jerking stories.

This may be one of the best Voltron stories I have read in the fandom.

If you haven’t read this yet, do it. But do it during the daytime - It’s Shirley Jackson “Haunting of Hill House” levels of psychological horror at times. And if you are inclined to say no, you’re missing out on a wonderful payoff at the end.

Rated G in spite of the suspense and maybe a touch of language, gen, Keith-centric.

My Thoughts: Shiro is always so considerate. I love how he tries to lift Lance's mood and make him feel better.

And here's the worst part: even after rescue and after things return to normal, Keith gets the distinct sense that whatever was on that planet has followed him. He doesn't have proof. But he knows it's there. He knows it's not going to stop until it gets what it wants.

My Thoughts: It's a long one, but very worth it. It's a bit angsty in some parts, and Keith is clearly traumatized from the incident at the beginning, but there's a lot of comfort from the rest of the team. The whole concept behind it is very well thought and original, and made me shiver in fear at times (in the best way).

Summary: “You could play the injured guy act,” she suggests, grasping her pen and extending it to where the sling is cradling his right arm. She taps the plaster of the casting. “You’re both stubborn enough that you’ll probably never decide otherwise.”

He scrunches his face sourly at the reminder, eyes tracing the obnoxious blue doodles Lance had left on the off-white canvas as soon as Keith had let him close enough. Scribbles in other bright colors paint it in well wishes and cute little caricatures from the others.

Green is the only missing color and he’s too embarrassed to ask.

My Thoughts: I've always shipped Keith and Pidge together, and this fic is probably on the top ones whenever I want something wholesome to read. The setting is done so well, and it feels so warm and comfortable. I love Keith in this one, and the way Pidge comforts him.

My Thoughts: I’m always weak for the “all get sick” trope, so this will always remain one of my favorites. Features Shiro caring about everyone else and forgetting himself until he’s so sick that Keith forces him to rest. So good.

Summary:  The healing pods are full. The paladins are bloody and bruised. Shiro helps ease their aches and pains.

My Thoughts: Features Shiro caring for the entire team after a long and rough day. Despite the circumstances, it somehow feels soft and warm and comfortable. I like to go back to this one and read it from time to time.

Summary:  Life on the back of a giant quantum space whale is much easier to deal with when you've got a furry friend along for the ride.

My Thoughts: This one makes such a great setting and ambient for Keith’s time in the Quantum Abyss. As I said before, I don’t find many fics about the Quantum Abyss, and this one is so, so good. Krolia and Kosmo are awesome in this, and the writing is incredible.

My Thoughts: I love everything about this fic - from Kolivan taking care of keith, to Hunk’s warm welcome, to the whole team reuniting. So warm, so good, made me so happy.

Summary:  Shiro is sick and Lance is the only one who can look after him. If Shiro will let him, of course. Hopefully it's just a cold.

My Thoughts: I think  the first Voltron fic I ever read was by maychorian, and her incredible writing never ceases to amaze me. I especially love the way she writes Lance. This fic is awesome because it also introduces illness in a way that’s somewhat unexpected, and the way Lance and Shiro deal with it is so in character. Definitely reccomend this one.

Summary: Keith discovers that he's horribly allergic to something on the new planet they've landed on, and Coran discovers that his cryopods are completely unable to do anything about seasonal allergies.Luckily, the rest of the team has some ideas about what to do. Keith may not be good at acknowledging his weaknesses, asking for help, or letting other people take care of him, but he's about to get a LOT of practice - enough to start surprising himself.

My Thoughts: I’m usually not too much into the allergy trope, but occasionally I find a fic that’s so good that will get me right into it. Thta’s the case with this one. Excellent caretaking and descriptions.
