Just to clarify, I wear black when I’m having a depressive episode so when I’m sobbing uncontrollably in my school’s hallway or am having a panic attack I draw less attention than when I wear my neon blue jacket.

I just feel a lot less stupid when my mental breakdowns line up with my wardrobe’s aesthetic.

Peter Parker

Oh poor Peter, he’s just got so much going on. With Aunt May and the house, him tryna find a stable job, his relationship with MJ, and now prioritizing his friendship with Harry, he’s being pulled in so many different directions it’s honestly dizzying!

There’s so much going on in his life that I wouldn’t be too surprised if he developed some anxiety around it. Like we know Peter for being this quirky, goofy kid who’s got hella jokes and can rock your ass in a science test, but when he’s alone, the turbulence of his life gets to him a little. And it’s not like he can let anyone really know - he’s Spiderman for crying out loud! If he goes down, who knows how the rest will take it.

And of course the Venom Symbiote doesn't make things any better - Pete’s whole acting like an ass thing wasn’t intentional by no means necessary, but I think that would also play into his anxiety as well. He doesn’t want to ever hurt his friends the way he did with that symbiote in him - they’re the last thing he has.

On a completely not depressing note, I feel like having the house to himself gives Peter the opportunity to really figure out his own aesthetic. Sure, he’s the cute nerdy heartthrob guy, but he wants to expand himself! I feel like he wouldn’t be into the super modern high tech home decor that’s been sweeping through every interior designers palette - I see him as a mix of warm country house vibes (courtesy of Aunt May), with a hint of the technological advantages that he’d implement into certain appliances and spaces (*coughcough* at home lab *coughcough*) and a finishing touch of midcentury modern for a pop of color….it won’t stop him from being a bit of a slob though unfortunately.

Mary-Jane “MJ” Watson

If i were her I’d be one critique away from giving Mr. J.J.Jameson a taste of his own desk, because oh my god the self-centeredness he possesses makes me want to vomit. But it’s a good thing I’m not, and our darling redhead angel has enough patience to deal with him for the sake of a bag - I applaud her for that.

I know a lot of people don’t like the MJ segments in the game but i actually appreciate them! Shows that she’s not just a pretty face that Pete falls in love with you know? And I like to think she actually likes the moments she gets to take down the Hunters because it makes her feel like a badass - which she totally is!

As a destresser from being a prime member of the Spider Team (yes, I’m claiming them as the Spider Team since Spider Squad is already taken) and her journalism job, I’d like to think she’s into something so niche like jewelry making - specifically little charm bracelets that she gifts to the others. Yknow, on some ‘friendship lasts forever’ type shit.

Also in her freetime she has writing projects on the side that she wouldn’t consider viable enough to send in as a story, but just fun little stories she’ll write for the hell of it. There’s nothing too specific about them, but they also serve as a way to track how her writing is progressing, and she’s in a group of beta readers of sorts that give her feedback on how much better she’s getting.

Another poor boy that just has way too much on his hands, good lord. Granted, I never saw the hype around Harry, but I think after this adaptation of him I might be warming up to him a little bit.

Harry Osborn

Getting on the bandwagon of adopting new hobbies, I see Harry as getting into drawing, especially during the period in which he doesn’t have the suit. Since his health is deteriorating and he isn’t able to be as mobile as he would like, he needs something to keep his mind and hands busy. And drawing does the trick for him. He starts off with just basic drawings like items in his room, but he advances very quickly and starts drawing portraits of himself and MJ, who spends a lot of time taking care of him. He symbalso sketches a picture of him and Peter when they were in highschool over and over again, especially when he runs out of muses.

Harry also spends a lot of his time thinking. Thinking about his life thus far, his friends, the legacy he wants to leave behind. He doesn’t just want his last name attached to something to make it great - he wants to earn his keep and his place in society. It was the whole reason he started the Emily-May Foundation; it would have been his mark on the world, and yet, here he was, tied down to his bed once again. Then again, who knows if the symbiote would have done the same to himself, had he let his own convictions get too far?

Considering what happens at the end of the game, though, I suppose we won’t ever know…until the next installment that is.

Miles Morales

Why are there so many poor boys in this game? Like I got enough sympathy to go around but Jesus save these guys!!!

He is a HEAVY romantic, especially when it comes to Hailey (so so SO happy he got his girl in the end was rooting for them so hard in his game). He plans their dates according to the mode and vibe of the day, whatever the two are feeling, whatever is mentioned in fleeting conversations, etc. He’s in love and proud of it!

He’s getting better at dividing up the attention to the important people in his life, as well as school and his Spiderman duties. Sundays are for him and his mom to lounge in their pajamas and catch up with each other on the weeks events; he hangs with Ganke throughout the week and sometimes goes out with him to science expo’s every now and then. He’ll pop up on Hailey whenever she’s in the neighborhood and just sits and chills with her (and if she’s working on a street piece, even better! He’s her no. 1 supporter!)

He, Peter and Ganke get into rubix cubes competitions to see who can complete the rubix cube the fastest. Right now Ganke is ranked number one and Peter and Miles are tied for second place, but they’re getting another, more difficult cube to compete again soon.

He’s got a big heart, and knowing the effects of everything that’s happened with Harry, Miles makes it a point to check in with Peter every now and then. He’s lowkey worried that if the older Spiderman’s worry for his best friend doesn’t do him in, then somehow the effects of the Venom symbiote on Peter’s psyche will turn him cold again, and that doesn’t end well at all. He does this well with MJ, and they talk frequently on how they can be better support for Pete and Harry in the aftermath of everything that’s happened.

1. What has been your favorite time period to play in or which one are you most excited for?

So far the 1900s and the 1930s have been my favourites. For the 1900s I just loved Evie so much, and the whole period just felt really peaceful. Then for the 30s, Harry and Maisie were just too cute and it was so nice to have a story the was a little more wholesome after the chaos I put the poor Finch’s through in the 20s. I’m very excited for the 40s! Spoiler alert, I’m already there in gameplay, and I’m so happy. I mainly studied ww2 history at university so it’s fun to be in a period I’m very familiar with. Also just aesthetically I’m excited for the 80s and 90s because that’s my jam. 

2. Do you have a favorite piece of historical cc? (CAS or BB)

I think the last time I did these questions I said the Edwardian dress from @gilded-ghosts’s Stately Set and honestly I think that’s still true. I just love it a lot. However I also want to shout out the Langtree Updo by @twentiethcenturysims because it is just perfect for those Gibson Girl looks. 

3. Who is your favorite sim currently?

It’s my boy John Finch. I’m really worried for him since obviously soon he’ll have to go to war, but I just love that dorky little mechanic. I do also really love Ruth though, who we will be seeing more of for sure. She’s just too cute to deal with. 

4. What is your favorite world?

San Myshuno forever. Definitely going to need to find a reason for the Finch’s to move there one day- maybe in the 70s? Feels like it could fit that vibe really well. 

5. Are you more gameplay or story focused?

Bit of both! I have a general idea of what sort of things I want to deal with in each decade as it comes, so I’ll sort of steer the gameplay into those directions, but then often the gameplay will in turn steer the story. This is sort of why I prefer to do smaller story posts- it just matches more with the way I play. 

6. Do you like to play with pets in your historical saves?

Yes! The Finch family has had several dogs by now, I’m certain they’ll get a cat at some point. Pets to me always just make the house feel cozier 

7. What’s your biggest immersion breaking pet peeve with the game?

Well I was going to say when sims from other worlds appear in places it wouldn’t make sense for them to be in, but luckily just today @aheathen-conceivably brought this mod to my attention which I installed almost immediately. 

8. What’s your favorite in-game historical item? (CAS or BB)

Again I think I’m repeating myself from last time, but the radiator from the Vampires GP. It’s a little thing but I love it and just makes historical builds look better. 

9. What would you like to see as a new pack or asset to the game?

Bands please!!! The music career annoys me to no end- it’s so limited in it’s scope! Actually honestly just more careers in general I would really like. 

10. What pack do you think is invaluable as a historical simmer?

I’m jumping on the bandwagon and saying Cottage Living because I mean, just look at it. But also Get Together for Windenburg and Vampires for some very good items. 

11. Do you have a favorite mod to enhance historical gameplay?

I do now, and it’s that Home Regions mod! I also have one called “no more phone stuff” that I’ve had installed forever not sure where from, and it’s very handy. It doesn’t stop sims pulling out their phones all together, but at least no one is playing Blicblock in the middle of the Great Depression. 

12. What’s your ideal family size for playing?

Any where from 2-4. More than that and I start to get overwhelmed.

13. Do you use poses?

Yuuuuuuup, tons of them. Kind of want to learn how to make my own but haven’t had the time. 

14. Do you use any overrides in your game?

No I had one glitch really badly once and now I’m kind of scared of them lol.

15. Do you, or did you, play off-the-grid during your game?

I tried briefly at the start of the 1890s and it was just really frustrating. They really should be able to do more things even if they don’t have power. 

16. What lifespan do you play on?

Normal!  Finally settled on a setting. 

17. What inspired you to start playing a historically?

As I said I was a history student and I have always been a huge sims fan, so when I found out about the Decades Challenge I felt like I had to try it. I was hooked pretty much instantly.

Currently watching: My longstanding guilty pleasure is docs/commentary videos about any and all scams, particularly mlms/pyramid schemes. So it should come as no surprise that my brand new guilty pleasure is debt confessions/financial audits on youtube 🙈 I've been been watching a few by caleb hammer whose gimmick is that he gordon ramsey style shames people who come in with their financial records and he's like hey. why do you have $120,000 in consumer debt? why did you finance an ipad for your literal infant child?? why have you spent 30 dollars multiple times a day every day at dunkin for the last 3 months??? (the last one is an exaggeration but the first two I have seen LOL). His thumbnails are wretched I hate them so, so much, and his advice of living spartan-like for a few years to dig yourself out of the hole is ehhh maybe good in theory but generally not exactly...practical. And I think going cold turkey when you're used to constant impulse buying is basically a recipe for just eventually losing control and going on a bender. But. I'm nosy and love hearing about how people be spending their money so that's the best part of the videos for me lol

Currently reading: haven't picked up something new yet BUT I juuuust finished An Unauthorised Fan Treatise which was SO GOOD I literally slammed it nonstop for two days until I finished it. It's formatted like a rpf conspiracy theory livejournal where a fangirl of a supernatural-drama show compiles evidence that the two lead actors are secretly dating. BUT it's noted that the livejournal has been submitted as evidence into for a murder trial so y'know TWISTS AND TURNS lol. There's just something about the format that really compels me, idk I already love reading primers and conspiracies for hrpf couples that I literally have zero investment in and never will- I just enjoy the way the girlies spin a good narrative. (and also watching video essays about the uhhh less casual to super trainwreck ones like the whole larry fiasco even though I never got into 1D, as well as general fandom fiascos like msscribe and snapewives etc etc IT'S ALL SO FASCINATING TO ME 🍿👀) So it was a really natural fit for me to read in a fictional setting. last book you read: Goodnight Pun Pun by Inio Asano (manga) I've read the whole series before years ago but I'm slowly collecting the physical copies of it. last book you enjoyed reading: I love Goodnight Pun Pun but since that's technically a manga I’ll do a diff one, I really liked reading Lovely Dark and Deep by Amy Mcnamara. It's about a girl that's really depressed after a significant loss and goes to live with her artist dad in a remote area of Maine.

last book you hated reading: Little Weirds by Jenny Slate. There's some good moments in there that shine but I feel like the rest of the book is trying really hard to be quirky/weird and indie and it doesn't come off as genuine at all.

bonus! favourite thing to cook/bake: since I got sick I haven't been baking or cooking much but it used to be making pies. I loved making pies. favourite craft to do in your free time: painting and drawing/making comics, but also now: writing :) most niche dislike: I hate the saying "work smarter not harder" because 9 times out of 10 when someone has said that to me they proceed to do whatever they are talking about in the most half-assed way and then you have to do it over again anyway from scratch to do it the correct way and I just. I hate it. opinion on circus(es): I don't like how they treat their animals, l feel like I see so many horror stories about how monkeys, bears, elephants etc are treated in circuses. 👖 JEANS - what is their go-to outfit?

to be honest we draw all of them in variations on these consistently as if theyre cartoon characters so you could probably guess them already if you went through our art tags

gam wears a lot of hoodies and jeans. under the hoodie is probably a t-shirt. gam sinister swaps for a tanktop and no hoodie layer. that's basically it. they favor warm colors

esda wears a lot of novelty t-shirts. when ey're being fancy ey do the suitguy/onceler lite look. ey never wear dresses or skirts

jo consistently does the hoodie/skirt/thigh highs thing because he is a true gamer boy and also because the most energy intensive part of that outfit is the thigh highs. if he goes out he adds sneakers

el wears a t-shirt and midi skirt. sometimes pants. they own a bunch of t shirts that are basically identical

emp wears depression clothes (at home) and outfits designed to cover as much of their body as possible when they do go out. this usually adds up to something like turtleneck + hoodie + leggings + boots + mask + gloves + glasses

people tend to assume gam has something very wrong with them. this is technically correct but they tend to be wrong about the specifics

people sometimes assume esda has an actual onceler introject (technically it’d be fable.ing but the terminology is not the issue here). this is not the case

people usually assume jo is dating an actual nalka because why on earth would you kick up that much fuss about anything less (technically this is an el assumption but one entirely relative to jo). They get real disappointed when he explains to them :/

most people who see them venting assume el is just trans and really really dysphoric because. Hi. sometimes they exploit that ambiguity to be a bit more open than they usually would

people assume amethyst is either a generationally wealthy influencer-type or a plant sponsored by fashion brands due to her sheer cohesion of aesthetic. neither of these things are true shes just autistic and possibly misusing her deity powers

How long have you been engaging fanfiction sites such as Archive of our own, Fanfiction.net and Wattpad? I've been reading fics since I was about ~11-12 I think? Stayed mostly on fanfiction.net up until I want to say, 2013-2014 when I shifted to mainly ao3. I still used Fanfiction.net heavily due to the amount of crossover fanfictions and old fandoms on there which are always a pleasure

What are some of your favourite works or fandoms on those sites? Many of my favs have gotten deleted over the years. There was this one titanic fic that was Caledon/Jack & Caledon/Rose. On ao3 my fav fic that was cherik outsider pov got deleted....yeah that one still hurts. I would reread it twice a year.

Are you a writer as well as a reader? yes but I wish I could publish more. it takes me forever to create and i get into anxious depressed slumps too often

What drew you to these platforms and why do you stay? ao3:the creativity of these stories and the ease of access to them and how easy it is to find something right up your alley. and the porn. the crazy ass fucking porn too & the ease at which you can find really darker content that a lot of published works just dont do the way i like them too. recently i've been reading the og hannibal books and i wish more published books did that. fanfiction: mainly that mostly old fics/fandoms were on there, and its easy to navigate especially if youre into crossovers. gives you enough options to make everything fun. also, the communities and forums!!! yes!!! love it. i miss forums. i also LOVE the wattpad: commenting etiquette from fans and the easy of publishing works on there from your phone. makes writing more accessible to people even tho much of it is garbage.

What does your engagement with the platform look like? ao3: pretty much every day or every other day i have about 50-60 tabs open of stories im reading atm. i switch between them often, like literaly nightly. i'll read 4-5 fics in one sitting someitme. ff: when i want a specific fandom or crossover i will go there. other than that i dont touch it What are your favourite aspects of the platform? ao3: hands down, tagging system, ESPECIALLY being able to exclude tags as well. ff: crossover system and how fanfics are broken down by genre (anime, tv show, book, etc) wattpad: i like the search function, strangely. not that efficient at all but its cute

Do you think that you engage with all of the elements available on the platform? ao3: tbh, yes and no. pretty much every feature i've at least tinkered or used but i know my way enough around it that i can navigate what i need. Are there any elements of the platform that frustrate you? the inability to have a dark mode. i know you can switch the skins but sometimes i just want a simple button i can click instead of typing up the code esp for nighttime reading. also what i find the best for wattpad is the way you can comment. you can do it by line, at any point in the fic. it makes commenting much much easier and encouraging. i wish ao3 and other sites would incorporate that. Of the fanfiction sites you frequent, where would you rank the site as a whole and why? ao3 #1, fanfiction.net #2, wattpad dead last If Archive of Our Own were to develop a mobile app, what features would you like to see? i do not want to see ao3 develop a mobile app. it opens and works perfectly fine in browser. i am strictly against a mobile app. Are there any features you would like to see added to the platform in the app? if there is to be an app i need Apple to let go of the app store monopoly before we can even have this conversation. but for the sake of it, i wish you could add ability to change font, ability to go dark mode or at least amber mode, and ability to comment like how wattpad does it

This is a Priest of Brooding post. Essentially me thinking out loud about things that are difficult. If you don't want to deal with it, I can't find any other things tagged Priest of Brooding, so if you block that tag, you should only block this style of post and only from me.

With that out of the way:

I keep rolling a few bits now stuck in my head from Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Trying to parse a difficult topic as a kind of way of plucking at strings in an attempt to untangle a knot.

In particular, a cancer survivor said to me that they didn't think their life experiences could be helpful to me and I disagreed because it essentially already was something of a parser to my thinking. They had had the experience, like my own, where their own body was key to their unhappiness. They had experienced that betrayal and had not taken any of the leaps that I had. Which does let me untangle that what I'm going through isn't THE natural reaction to pain. There's something more than that I'm just in pain that is making me react the way I am.

And that's what I want to parse: The separate threads leading me into this knot so I can maybe untangle them and see more clearly.

My chronic pain is an obvious thread but I want to tease the rest away from it.

I certainly hate my body in part because it hurts. I don't want to hurt so I don't want my body. Simple enough.

Having low self image is a sensible thread. I don't like how I identify how people "should" look in comparison to how I do look. And I've been making some headway on that. Talking to my therapist about how I think I and my family look is certainly illuminating that I am having a deeper reaction to their looks than their actual looks. For my to define myself and my younger sister as unattractive while defining my older sister as beautiful and my father as looking the way he was supposed to look, neither good nor bad, when we all so strongly resemble each other is pretty blatant that I am not actually looking primarily at physical aesthetics. Feeling ugly is fairly clearly an emotional instead of a logical response, no matter how much logic I pour into it.

But with all that, dealing with people with pain, dealing with people with low physical self esteem, even dealing with people who hate their bodies, or have fairly noticeable gender biases in my interactions with people I know, I'm the only one to leap in my deep depressions to the idea that since I don't want to be this body, then maybe I want to be another body, maybe I want to be a body of the a different gender.

And like how do you parse that apart? How do you figure out which dysphoria is based in pain, low self esteem, or gender? Does it even matter? Would that desire go away if I didn't have the other threads? Or am I blaming the other threads so I can keep trying to avoid the topic for another 40 years? Am I just making it a tangle because I'm afraid of what a straight line it actually is?

I don't know. But I'm not feeling like "I don't know" is an acceptable answer any more. It's all well and good to say in principle that everyone should be allowed to experiment and fuck the gender binary because it is bullshit. It is not really the same thing when it is myself in practice and I'm going to have to pay the consequences of anything I say, try, or do.
