Okay so, I'll let it slip that im thinking about writing a crossover fic with Murderbot Diaries and A Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet solely because of how AI autonomy or really, lack thereof, is treated (also because I think it would be funny to see MB freak the fuck out about encountering sapient aliens who are nothing like what it's serials and knowledge of alien remnant tell it they're like. Also because it would compare Corbin to Gurathin (Corbin is worse) and call him an asshole)

I want to give ART a body, a bodykit like Lovey was supposed to get, until the Lovelace program became Sidra. But that begs the question: would ART want a body?

Yes. I, personally think it would. It would love to be able to physically interact with it's crew; to hug Iris, Seth and Martyn, and everyone else. ART would love to be able to interact and tease and harass MB as well ("I wish incould punch you in the face," . "I wish you could try,").

But, would MB want that for ART? Not that it would have a choice in what ART wanted, but in the sense that it itself is a construct; in the Corporation Rim, and to some extent even outside of it: constructs are treated like shit, they are owned and lack autonomy (Governor Modules) and aren't seen as people with minds and personalitiesof their own.

While the bodykit would likely pass as an Augmented Human, even a highly kitted out ComfortUnit, in my head I see ART gaining a body that is more Human-form bot adjacent, and after Miki... well, I'm sure MB's feels towards them have changed significantly from what it originally thought of them. But all the same, human-form bots (let's exclude Miki here and assume MB is right, that people consider them 'pets' rather than a thinking being) could be exposed to some of the same treatment MB goes through. And, i doubt it would want ART to go through that

Idk, while I think ART would enjoy having a body, even if it just uses it as a proxy for special occasions/emergencies, MB would be hesitant if not a bit wary

i talked about this in discord but we were so preoccupied with all the different ways treebark could get together we neglected all the funny ways treebark could break up. martyn finds out how historically inaccurate ren's king voice is. ren finds out martyn doesn't like a certain food. martyn discovers ren doesn't watch anime. ren thinks martyn doesn't think he's the hottest guy to ever live. they are kind of freaks tbh their breakups would be the most dramatic and stupid shit everrrr. treebark HATRED

Martyn sits on the edge of a stage. He’s poked himself out between the closed curtains, their weight pressing against his shoulders, so that he can reach the outside again and stare out.

The lights in the theater are off. Someone’s here, though.

Martyn nods and then, as loudly and obnoxiously as possible, drinks out of a can of soda. “We’ve still got a few more weeks, right?” he says cheerfully. “You don’t gotta sit here waiting. Uh, shoot. What was the thing Tango said? Go home? It’s done? What are you doing here? I think I did that wrong, it’s a reference…”

The things sitting in the back of the theater say nothing. Martyn gestures with his soda can at them. “Hey, you try remembering your movie references when you weren’t even the one who made ‘em! It’s harder than it looks, you know.”

Many eyes slowly blink across the members of the audience who have never left. Martyn leans back. He lets the curtains dig into his shoulders. They’re heavy, is the thing. The curtain, when it’s closed between the stage and audience, it’s heavy. He’s not meant to be hanging out of it.

He’s not meant to know it’s there either. Typically, characters in a stage play don’t know they’re being Watched.

Some of them do, though.

Sometimes, the audience is even the one who fucks that up for them. Funny, that.

He sips obnoxiously from his can of soda again. “You know, staring at me won’t make it happen faster. I’m not even the one who sets, you know…” He waves his hands around. “I just show up where I’m told! Hang out! Kill people! Die.”

If he’s bitter about that—and he’s not in the business of lying to himself, so sure, he’s bitter about that—he doesn’t let it show.

“I’m not even supposed to be out here. I’m supposed to be backstage,” he says. “Take what you can get, yeah? If you start talking to the characters, you don’t get to complain when they come out here and taunt you for Watching when there isn’t a bloody life game to Watch.”

The things in the back of the theater say nothing. Martyn tries to drink from his can of soda again, but it’s out. He crushes it between his hands and throws it out into the crowd in a moment of rash defiance. It’s not really fair, though—he doesn’t mind half the audience, really. One of the nice ones might be in the seat that’s slightly sticky now. Bit rude of him.

Of course, he can’t get off the stage to fix it. That’s not how this works. Just because they felt the need to make it so Martyn could move the curtains—

He sighs.

“One of you want to go out to the vending machines and get me another? There’s nothing backstage, you know. Nothing back there at all.”

Something moves.

“Thanks,” he mutters. “Thanks. Few more weeks to go, right? Few more weeks to go.”

Owen: “Hi, Martyn. It’s been a good while, huh? Spring just started. We built ourselves a little house. We even left a room for you, I think you would have liked it. It’s been... Hard without you. Jay- Grian, it made the most sense in my head, but I actually flip flopped on this so many times bc he also works so well as Tim or Alex, but at some point I went "wait it's an au, we can see how the story changes with Grian as the protag" so Grian's the protag now

Tim/Masky- Scar, I'm a transparent desert duo enjoyer and had a similar flip flop with him as I did Grian bc he'd also work as Jay but I was halfway through that drawing and had a similar thought process to the one i had abt Grian

Brian/Hoodie- Jimmy, I wanted to keep the cast focused to life series and evo members and he made the most sense to me lore wise, especially with the idea that in this au he was one of the ones with the earliest exposure to The Watcher (bc I love Canary Curse symbolism)

Alex- This one was the toughest choice bc no matter what a fav is going to loose it. Good thing this based on the Life Series! As much as I Love the idea of Joel and Lizzie as Alex and Amy, I actually went with Martyn. Again, the character is pretty involved with the Watcher Lore so it made the most sense as the character that is arguably most effected by it. (Although for a brief moment I considered Mumbo Jumbo bc,,, how fucking funny would that be)

Jessica- Jessica's gotta be Pearl right? It makes the most sense for it to be Pearl, I don't even need reasoning for this it makes sense

Amy- So who's Amy then? Scott actually! He's not Martyn's boyfriend in this, he's just a really good friend of his who was super involved in the production. Also like in mh, he's Pearl's roommate.

Sarah- Ren. Can't have a life series au featuring desert duo and not have some renchanting. Who else would be one of the leading actors in Martyn's short film?

Seth- Big B, again Evo connection made sense to me, and depending on your own personal theory on who the third person running the totheark account is, both Big B and Ren have interesting implications, even if both their rolls are p minor in this au

With the cast out of the way other questions !!!

It's set in a kind of nebulous time frame that's probably a little closer to present day, but it does still start with a student film project. When asked Why Martyn chose to use tapes he says something about wanting a more authentic feel to the film but in reality he just thought using tapes was a cool idea and doesn't want to admit that it's kind of impractical now.

In this au Scar doesn't smoke, but instead I like the headcannon that he just has boxes of candy/bubblegum cigarettes on him at all times. He'll pull one out, pause, and offer one to someone and when they say no he's just like "Okay, your loss" and watch as they get all confused when he starts unwrapping it asdfghkgkdjhfjsh

Is Grian gay in this au? Whose to say. (Real answer tho, I'm a notorious Jam shipper and while I'm not an active shipper when it comes to hermitcraft or the life series, I don't really mind it so the relationship is left kind of ambiguous)

Anyway gonna tryyyy to get through all the 3rd life POVs because of a video idea I have. Watched Joel's and Ren's and man Ren really is so pathetic, he fucking always is, he cant stop. Sad puppydog found no way to be intimidating other than to force his Hand to chop his head off. Mm Renchanting so cute though... I know how there's stuff in Martyn's POV of him breaking off from Ren for some time because of feeling excluded etc when in Ren's POV that was never seen to any degree and it made Ren's panicked moral dilemmas look like an overreaction and that's really funny to me. His POV unintentionally paints it as such needless worry when Martyn's POV is like "I'm divorcing him". Also Martyn tucking him into bed... so awesome so cool

I have a lot to say about the demonization of people with zero or no empathy however I am tired so I’m just going to say the psych major in me started tweaking when a commenter like months ago called boatem ghosts scar a sociopath /derogatory/ and I made half the cast right then and there have low empathy and now I get to write a little about it finally yippee yippee

sympathy and empathy and people on opposite sides of the empathy spectrum navigating each other is just a deep fascination of mine in writing. more sharing this because it’s funny but I am very much hoping to explore this subject deeper if I ever get around to writing pearl’s prequel,,.,. In her short pov on the main story it gets explored a little bit in how overwhelming Mumbo’s breakdown is and how that sends her right off the deep end with him (I <3 u merlin) but I want to make it EXPLICIT I loVE EMPATHY I want to explore all facets of it NOW

all this because I just wanted to share this characterization of Grian because it’s SILLY. ‘put yourself in someone else’s shoes’ Grian can’t do that but he can go in Mumbo’s shoes. He can put himself in Mumbo’s shoes he can he can do it (just listens to whatever mumbo says. mumbo is always right. mumbo jumbo I’m not sure this is healthy but you’re my emotional support guy)

anyway boatem ghosts characters with low empathy: pearl, scar, grian, cub, probably cleo but bordering more on being a tad more normal. fuck it I’m putting zedaph on this list too

Martyn's experiences remind him of his past... and not all are positive.

It's curious how he and Cellbit have the exact arm scars, but Cellbit has it in both arms and Martyn has it on just one arm, but this is just a massive coincidence.

... BUT THE WATCHERS, THAT'S TOO SIMILAR TO JUST BE COINCIDENCE, NO WAY.

I will be referring to QSMP!Watcher as Q/P and Life Series/Evo SMP Watchers as T/L.

I'm trying to connect both Watchers and it's honestly… not hard, but interesting, the methods are so similar yet so different from each other

Both of them are putting a bunch of people, encouraging forming alliances, together in an isolated place and torture them, with outside forces but the people making the actual damage, for like a couple of weeks for clearly personal reasons while another force is trying to take them out of the "game" AKA The Federation and The Listeners The difference is that Q/P went about it, is that it built a giant map and forced the teams upon the people, and the disasters happened at random. Meanwhile, T/L does it by making a tiny map, forcing the people to interact with each other, and they form their own alliances and enemies, and the "twists" are extremely specific throughout the entire game.

Q/P is very structured on how it's going around and torturing the players because that's the goal; torture the "sinners". While T/L is looser on how it will play out because that's fun, they feed on negative emotions, so making everything uncomfortable and weird is their goal, not torture them, but if they do, that's great.

Both of them are Watchers, but their personalities are not the same.

On the meta-level, makes sense Traffic was designed by Grian who is weird, funny, and chaotic, a pesky bird, and Purgatory was designed by Quackity, who is all of those things, and most importantly a lawyer, very lawful of him.

Purgatory doesn't serve the same purpose as Traffic/Life, Purgatory is to torture people and make them miserable, and that stays with them, while Traffic exist specifically for, yes, to torture people, but also to feed the Watchers with negative emotions, that's the reason why the players can go back and think of all the murder and betrayal from previous seasons and not feel bitter, the Watchers removed the negative emotions from those memories.

How does Martyn feel about Purgatory and Q/P!Watcher?

He probably already connected the dots about this Watcher and the Watchers he does know. Character!Martyn probably knows about Watcher!Grian and how there are other Watchers, but this one doesn't act like the ones he knows, this one is more… rigid. So, is he thinking there's more of them? Does he even remember or know that he is protected by the Listeners because he won one of the seasons. How does that protection work in Purgatory? Is he unable to be dragged into the games? Clearly no, because he got dragged into Secret Life. Is he just not food for the Watchers? Can he not be punished (as badly) as the Sinners?

... Also, would he think the Watchers just have a thing for birds? Like, Grian is a Watcher and he is often depicted as a parrot because of the "pesky bird" thing, Jimmy is the Watchers' favorite punching bag, and he is so unlucky he became a fucking canary. THEN HE MEETS THIS FUCKING ELQUACKITY, OPENLY A DUCK AND OPENLY WORKING WITH THE WATCHER IN PURGATORY; AND ALSO PURGATORY IS THE PLACE THAT GAVE PHIL HIS WINGS BACK (metaphorically, they just let his wing healed which the Federation would never do) AND IS THE ONLY PERSON THE EYE WORKERS LISTEN TO.
