komaedas have you tried straw.page?
(i hope you don't mind if i make a big ollllle webdev post off this!)
i have never tried straw.page but it looks similar to carrd and other WYSIWYG editors (which is unappealing to me, since i know html/css/js and want full control of the code. and can't hide secrets in code comments.....)
my 2 cents as a web designer is if you're looking to learn web design or host long-term web projects, WYSIWYG editors suck doodooass. you don't learn the basics of coding, someone else does it for you! however, if you're just looking to quickly host images, links to your other social medias, write text entries/blogposts, WYSIWYG can be nice.
toyhouse, tumblr, deviantart, a lot of sites implement WYSIWYG for their post editors as well, but then you can run into issues relying on their main site features for things like the search system, user profiles, comments, etc. but it can be nice to just login to your account and host your information in one place, especially on a platform that's geared towards that specific type of information. (toyhouse is a better example of this, since you have a lot of control of how your profile/character pages look, even without a premium account) carrd can be nice if you just want to say "here's where to find me on other sites," for example. but sometimes you want a full website!
---------------------------------------
neocities hosting
currently, i host my website on neocities, but i would say the web2.0sphere has sucked some doodooass right now and i'm fiending for something better than it. it's a static web host, e.g. you can upload text, image, audio, and client-side (mostly javascript and css) files, and html pages. for the past few years, neocities' servers have gotten slower and slower and had total blackouts with no notices about why it's happening... and i'm realizing they host a lot of crypto sites that have crypto miners that eat up a ton of server resources. i don't think they're doing anything to limit bot or crypto mining activity and regular users are taking a hit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
↑ page 1 on neocitie's most viewed sites we find this site. this site has a crypto miner on it, just so i'm not making up claims without proof here. there is also a very populated #crypto tag on neocities (has porn in it tho so be warned...).
---------------------------------------
dynamic/server-side web hosting
$5/mo for neocities premium seems cheap until you realize... The Beautiful World of Server-side Web Hosting!
client-side AKA static web hosting (neocities, geocities) means you can upload images, audio, video, and other files that do not interact with the server where the website is hosted, like html, css, and javascript. the user reading your webpage does not send any information to the server like a username, password, their favourite colour, etc. - any variables handled by scripts like javascript will be forgotten when the page is reloaded, since there's no way to save it to the web server. server-side AKA dynamic web hosting can utilize any script like php, ruby, python, or perl, and has an SQL database to store variables like the aforementioned that would have previously had nowhere to be stored.
there are many places in 2024 you can host a website for free, including: infinityfree (i use this for my test websites :B has tons of subdomains to choose from) [unlimited sites, 5gb/unlimited storage], googiehost [1 site, 1gb/1mb storage], freehostia [5 sites/1 database, 250mb storage], freehosting [1 site, 10gb/unlimited storage]
if you want more features like extra websites, more storage, a dedicated e-mail, PHP configuration, etc, you can look into paying a lil shmoney for web hosting: there's hostinger (this is my promocode so i get. shmoney. if you. um. 🗿🗿🗿) [$2.40-3.99+/mo, 100 sites/300 databases, 100gb storage, 25k visits/mo], a2hosting [$1.75-12.99+/mo, 1 site/5 databases, 10gb/1gb storage], and cloudways [$10-11+/mo, 25gb/1gb]. i'm seeing people say to stay away from godaddy and hostgator. before you purchase a plan, look up coupons, too! (i usually renew my plan ahead of time when hostinger runs good sales/coupons LOL)
here's a big webhost comparison chart from r/HostingHostel circa jan 2024.
Tumblr media
---------------------------------------
domain names
most of the free website hosts will give you a subdomain like yoursite.has-a-cool-website-69.org, and usually paid hosts expect you to bring your own domain name. i got my domain on namecheap (enticing registration prices, mid renewal prices), there's also porkbun, cloudflare, namesilo, and amazon route 53. don't use godaddy or squarespace. make sure you double check the promo price vs. the actual renewal price and don't get charged $120/mo when you thought it was $4/mo during a promo, certain TLDs (endings like .com, .org, .cool, etc) cost more and have a base price (.car costs $2,300?!?). look up coupons before you purchase these as well!
namecheap and porkbun offer something called "handshake domains," DO NOT BUY THESE. 🤣🤣🤣 they're usually cheaper and offer more appealing, hyper-specific endings like .iloveu, .8888, .catgirl, .dookie, .gethigh, .♥, .❣, and .✟. I WISH WE COULD HAVE THEM but they're literally unusable. in order to access a page using a handshake domain, you need to download a handshake resolver. every time the user connects to the site, they have to provide proof of work. aside from it being incredibly wasteful, you LITERALLY cannot just type in the URL and go to your own website, you need to download a handshake resolver, meaning everyday internet users cannot access your site.
---------------------------------------
hosting a static site on a dynamic webhost
you can host a static (html/css/js only) website on a dynamic web server without having to learn PHP and SQL! if you're coming from somewhere like neocities, the only thing you need to do is configure your website's properties. your hosting service will probably have tutorials to follow for this, and possibly already did some steps for you. you need to point the nameserver to your domain, install an SSL certificate, and connect to your site using FTP for future uploads. FTP is a faster, alternative way to upload files to your website instead of your webhost's file upload system; programs like WinSCP or FileZilla can upload using FTP for you.
if you wanna learn PHP and SQL and really get into webdev, i wrote a forum post at Mysidia Adoptables here, tho it's sorted geared at the mysidia script library itself (Mysidia Adoptables is a free virtual pet site script, tiny community. go check it out!)
---------------------------------------
file storage & backups
a problem i have run into a lot in my past like, 20 years of internet usage (/OLD) is that a site that is free, has a small community, and maybe sounds too good/cheap to be true, has a higher chance of going under. sometimes this happens to bigger sites like tinypic, photobucket, and imageshack, but for every site like that, there's like a million of baby sites that died with people's files. host your files/websites on a well-known site, or at least back it up and expect it to go under!
i used to host my images on something called "imgjoe" during the tinypic/imageshack era, it lasted about 3 years, and i lost everything hosted on there. more recently, komaedalovemail had its webpages hosted here on tumblr, and tumblr changed its UI so custom pages don't allow javascript, which prevented any new pages from being edited/added. another test site i made a couple years ago on hostinger's site called 000webhost went under/became a part of hostinger's paid-only plans, so i had to look very quickly for a new host or i'd lose my test site.
if you're broke like me, looking into physical file storage can be expensive. anything related to computers has gone through baaaaad inflation due to crypto, which again, I Freaquing Hate, and is killing mother nature. STOP MINING CRYPTO this is gonna be you in 1 year
Tumblr media
...um i digress. ANYWAYS, you can archive your websites, which'll save your static assets on The Internet Archive (which could use your lovely donations right now btw), and/or archive.today (also taking donations). having a webhost service with lots of storage and automatic backups can be nice if you're worried about file loss or corruption, or just don't have enough storage on your computer at home!
if you're buying physical storage, be it hard drive, solid state drive, USB stick, whatever... get an actual brand like Western Digital or Seagate and don't fall for those cheap ones on Amazon that claim to have 8,000GB for $40 or you're going to spend 13 days in windows command prompt trying to repair the disk and thenthe power is gong to go out in your shit ass neighvborhood and you have to run it tagain and then Windows 10 tryes to update and itresets the /chkdsk agin while you're awayfrom town nad you're goig to start crytypting and kts just hnot going tot br the same aever agai nikt jus not ggiog to be the saeme
---------------------------------------
further webhosting options
there are other Advanced options when it comes to web hosting. for example, you can physically own and run your own webserver, e.g. with a computer or a raspberry pi. r/selfhosted might be a good place if you're looking into that!
if you know or are learning PHP, SQL, and other server-side languages, you can host a webserver on your computer using something like XAMPP (Apache, MariaDB, PHP, & Perl) with minimal storage space (the latest version takes up a little under 1gb on my computer rn). then, you can test your website without needing an internet connection or worrying about finding a hosting plan that can support your project until you've set everything up!
there's also many PHP frameworks which can be useful for beginners and wizards of the web alike. WordPress is one which you're no doubt familiar with for creating blog posts, and Bluehost is a decent hosting service tailored to WordPress specifically. there's full frameworks like Laravel, CakePHP, and Slim, which will usually handle security, user authentication, web routing, and database interactions that you can build off of. Laravel in particular is noob-friendly imo, and is used by a large populace, and it has many tutorials, example sites built with it, and specific app frameworks.
---------------------------------------
addendum: storing sensitive data
if you decide to host a server-side website, you'll most likely have a login/out functionality (user authentication), and have to store things like usernames, passwords, and e-mails. PLEASE don't launch your website until you're sure your site security is up to snuff!
when trying to check if your data is hackable... It's time to get into the Mind of a Hacker. OWASP has some good cheat sheets that list some of the bigger security concerns and how to mitigate them as a site owner, and you can look up filtered security issues on the Exploit Database.
this is kind of its own topic if you're coding a PHP website from scratch; most frameworks securely store sensitive data for you already. if you're writing your own PHP framework, refer to php.net's security articles and this guide on writing an .htaccess file.
---------------------------------------
but. i be on that phone... :(
ok one thing i see about straw.page that seems nice is that it advertises the ability to make webpages from your phone. WYSIWYG editors in general are more capable of this. i only started looking into this yesterday, but there ARE source code editor apps for mobile devices! if you have a webhosting plan, you can download/upload assets/code from your phone and whatnot and code on the go. i downloaded Runecode for iphone. it might suck ass to keep typing those brackets.... we'll see..... but sometimes you're stuck in the car and you're like damn i wanna code my site GRRRR I WANNA CODE MY SITE!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
↑ code written in Runecode, then uploaded to Hostinger. Runecode didn't tell me i forgot a semicolon but Hostinger did... i guess you can code from your webhost's file uploader on mobile but i don't trust them since they tend not to autosave or prompt you before closing, and if the wifi dies idk what happens to your code.
---------------------------------------
ANYWAYS! HAPPY WEBSITE BUILDING~! HOPE THIS HELPS~!~!~!

learning to code!
When I was 9 years old, I learned enough html to code neopets pages, my own geocities websites, and I even made forums on my own sites so my friends could all roleplay together or rant together lol. And then? I forgot so much. I no longer no how to make a forum, or even a 'next page' button - so even the dream of just making a simple blog or webnovel site feels like a huge hurdle now. (9 year old me could probably figure it out in 2 hours).
So I'm relearning! I figured this would be a fun post to place resources I find for coding, since there's coding languages, and I figure maybe if you like running you're blog then you also might be interested in tools for making blogs!
First, for those of you who miss the old geocities and angelfire type of sites to make your own free site on: neocities.org
You can make free sites you can code yourself, the way 9 year old me did. A lot of people have made SUCH amazing sites, it's baffling my mind trying to figure out how they did, I definitely wish I could make an art portfolio site even a fourth as cool as some of the sites people have made on here.
And for those pressed for time, who aren't about to learn coding right now: wix.com is the place I recommend for building a site, it requires no coding skill and is fairly straightforward about adding pages or features by clicking buttons. I used it to make my art portfolio site, I am testing out using it for my webnovel - the alternative is Wordpress, but wix.com is letting me basically make a wordpress blog Inside my own site. It's very beginner friendly in terms of "how the fuck do I set up a 'sign up for updates' message and have my site actually email these people my novel updates?" and "I need a 4x20 grid of my art down the page, that lets people click the art to see it's information and make it bigger."
I did neocities.org's little html tutorial today, it's the part of html I DID remember (links, paragraphs, headers).
My next step is to go through htmldog.com's tutorials. They go from beginner, to intermediate, to CSS. Unlike many a coding tutorial I've seen, they explain what program on your computer you need to WRITE the code in and then how to save it and how to open it. (You'd think this isn't a big deal but I've been looking into how to learn Python for months and I can't find a tutorial explaining what fucking program to write my python in... notepad? do I need something else? I don't fucking know!! My dad finally gave me a printed textbook which supposedly tells you what to download to start... I learned C++ in college and for that you needed Visual Basic to code C++, so I figured I needed Something to Write the fucking python IN.)

hiii 🌺 how about 141 boys with a s/o that is not into pda and not affectionate
୨♡୧ pda // 141 headcanons ୨♡୧
『 price 』
☆ definitely something for him to get used to. he's not touchy, but physical touch is one of his favorite love languages. he's not going to be bummed out, necessarily, but it would take some time for him to remember the cues.
☆ price enjoys PDA because it seems like the respectful thing to do. a hand on the small of your back or around your waist, etc... but if you're uncomfortable, he'll learn to respect it.
☆ even in private, he only touches the spots you've agreed are fair game. besides, verbal affection is a big thing for him, so that'll fill the void. now, if you ever decide you want some affection; he's the man you'd want.
☆ cupping your cheeks, kissing you along your jaw and shoulders — all whilst looking at you for that silent nod of approval, or even reciprocation. he can't live without touch entirely, but you've definitely taught him a new kind of restraint.
『 simon 』
☆ the perfect match, because he despises physical touch. of course, his dislike stems from deeper issues, but regardless. touch isn't necessary for simon to feel loved, and he makes sure to show his fondness for you in other ways.
☆ acts of service, verbal affection, but mainly quality time. not being all over each other, but still hanging out and enjoying your company. loves hand holding though, especially if you play with his fingers<33
☆ rarely, usually about once a month, he wants to be touched. or wants to touch you, but only in private. putting his head in the crook of your neck, rubbing your waist while too lazy to rise from the bed. and he always knows when you're not in the mood to be touched, too — from hours of studying your body language.
☆ in terms of PDA, you're not getting any — to ensure your safety, to keep your relationship private, etc. if he ever does, it's a hand holding your arm to keep you close. more so to steer you when he's leading the way, but for him, it's pretty forward.
『 soap 』
☆ very touchy person, especially with his lovers, so it's definitely a challenge for him to get used to at times. he's not offended by any means — but he will pout!
☆ out in public, he put a hand around your waist without even thinking. you weren't upset, but he could tell it was making you stressy. "forgot again, my bad, love." his touch eased up instantly, instead just hooking his finger around yours — something unnoticeable enough in terms of PDA.
☆ when at home, though, you two have established a system. "alright, fine, I won't get carried away this time— but just one minute?" how could you say no to that face? and he did ask nicely, after all.
☆ all he wanted, was to get some time cuddling you. but in... his way... which is usually lying on top of you with his head in your chest, practically suffocating you with his weight.
──── just like in this video an anon sent me :3
『 gaz 』
☆ is 50/50 when it comes to affection. sometimes it's too much for him, other times it's all he wants. he especially doesn't care for excessive PDA — aside from a hand over your shoulder, maybe an arm squeeze, but only if it's not a populated area.
☆ the only time affection is fair game, is when he's come home after being deployed. you're not moving — his arms will be squeezing the life out of you for at least a minute straight. then, you're free to tap out.
☆ "no hitting—! we're only at forty seconds, babe." he'll say when you start to squirm, wrapping his arms around you like a python. finds the recoiling humorous at times, but he'd never take it far enough to overstimulate you on purpose.
☆ there are definitely times he has to recoil from affection, too. sometimes he's just not in the mood, but no one understands that better than you, right?

"Professor Python! I was just wondering if you had some form I could fill out to comment on the quality of your classes? I had some feedback, you see..." Ferdinand was wired with the audacity of a dying star, and could forward his feedback without so much as a blink of an eye. he pulled out a small, folded paper, the size of his palm. upon setting it free, it unfolded exponentially (comedically), little square upon little square of neat, 4 mm sized text.
"you see, as you are among the best shots in the academy. your nonchalance could be... well, I have thoughts on your general attitude because it can border on indifference, but i could hardly assume you of all people, indifferent." no breaths. just kept neatly creasing his list the further he went down. "I've also observed that your pacing may affect those who aren't quick teaches. myself, not included of course, but it would not hurt if you bear more mind of the students in the back? they are noble. it would behoove them to..."
two minutes of mind numbing minutes go by.
"and finally."
"I believe it would benefit us all if you joined the Black Eagles as a faculty member. have you ever considered it? the other day, I was watching your form and thought to myself—goodness be. you trim down all movements to emphasize the tension and taut of your back muscles and—"
It's miraculous, really, how this guy strings together all of those sentences without a single gap long enough to offer a 'no' or 'stop', let alone 'what the hell are you talking about'. Python simply gapes slightly while watching the paper unfold crease by neat little crease. He's been subjected to spirited, long-winded lectures on his behavior before—of course he has—but it's one thing to hear it from a friend of many years. To get this sort of treatment from this foppish little carrot-top he hardly knows from Anri is… Well. He's already tuned out somewhere after his attitude was brought up, but presumptuous seems like a good word here. Annoyance is kept at bay largely by keeping his mind elsewhere. Is this what it would be like if Forsyth and Clive had an insufferable child? Is it possible that is where this student came from? If Azama can have a daughter at the age she is, then anything is possible. Probably. Ah, the droning sound in the background of Python's thoughts is gone. The kid decided to take a dramatic pause. The archer blinks slowly, absorbing that baffling offer. He raises a hand to ask for the space to speak. "So you're sayin' that if I switched to your class you'd give me more feedback? Tell me all the ways I could be doin' my job better?" He huffs out a laugh. "I'll pass. Thanks." His boots click with the turn of his heels, intent on making his exit before he learns if there are any more lines to Mister Perfect's extensive notes.

Hello everyone! Oh my god, I am so excited. After a while of waiting for my project's ethics to be finalised I'm actually going to have access to the samples I need!!!! This is absolutely huge and I'm so relieved things are finally moving forward. To celebrate I made a lasagna for me and my boyfriend, and we enjoyed it with wine and good conversation when he came home from work.
I am looking after my parents' cat this week while they're on holiday, and here he is providing cuddles and ample moral support while I try to get through my FACS gating and data analysis. I haven't done it in a while so I was a little rusty, but I made it in the end! I have also accidentally stumbled upon a website that seems to be a free resource to learn Python, which I've been meaning to do for ages! I am quite busy with experiments this week but I plan on digging my teeth into this properly next week. It's always so exciting to learn a new skill! I'm looking forward to the challenge.
I also attended a small conference yesterday. At first I didn't want to go but to my surprise my friend was there and a lot of the speakers either had really interesting research to show or were just really inspirational people. While nothing was directly relevant to my own project, it's always good to get insights from others regarding how to design presentation and new ways of thinking about data.
Finally, I signed up to a bunch of workshops taking place over the next few months, both to refine current skills and learn completely new ones, and, while I am completely drained today, I am very hopeful about the next few months.
Keep your head up guys! Be patient with yourself and keep learning, it is the key to growth.

If you are going to make a game here’s some things that might be helpful!
Game engines:
Godot: very new dev friendly and it’s free. Has its own programming language (GDscript) but also supports C#. It’s best for 2D games but it can do 3D also.
Unity: I don’t even know if I should be recommending Unity. It has caused me much pain and the suffering. But Unity has an incredible amount of guides and tutorials. And once you get the hang of something it’s hard to get caught on the same thing again. It also has a great Visual Studio integration and uses C#. I will warn you the unity animator is where all dreams go to die. It’s a tedious process but you can probably get some plugins to help with that.
Unreal: Don’t use it unless you’re building a very large or very detailed 3D game. It also uses C++ which is hell.
Renpy: Made for visual novels but has support for small mini games. It only supports Python iirc. Basically if you’re making a VN it’s renpy all the way otherwise you should look elsewhere.
What to learn: Game design and how to act as your own game designer. As a designer you need to know if a part of your game isn’t meshing with the rest of it and be willing to give up that part if needed. Also sound design is very important as well. If you want to make your own sounds audacity is perfect for recording and cutting up your clips. If you want to find sound effects I recommend freesound.org and the YouTube royalty free music database.
Sadly I can’t recommend a lot of places to learn this stuff because I’m taking Game Development in Uni. So most of my info comes from my lectures and stuff. One of my game design textbooks is pretty good but it’s around $40 CAD. It’s called the game designers playbook by Samantha Stahlke and Pejman Mirza-Babaei if you’re interested (fun fact there’s a photo of Toriel in there)
Anyway sorry for dumping this large ask on you I’m just really passionate about game design and I like to see other people get into it.
please do not apologize I'd never heard half of this stuff so this is super useful!! I've seen some godot tutorials on YouTube although so far I've played around with RPG maker MV (it was on sale. very very fiddly interface, i had trouble getting around it) and gamemaker, which recently became free for non-commercial use (a lot more approachable on first impact but like i said, haven't really done anything substantial in either yet).
mostly, I'm still in the super vague stage. I've got an idea for the main story conflict, the protagonist and their foil, the general aesthetic i want to go for (likely 2D graphics, but it would be cool to make like. small cutscenes in low-poly 3D) but not much else. haven't exactly decided on the gameplay either! it's gonna necessarily be rpg-esque, but I'm not much of a fan of classic turn-based combat so. I'm gonna check out other games and see if i can frankenstein anything cooler :P

Ur so sick and i adore your hcs and i was wondeeing if yiu had any hcs of athena and persephone being protective ovee artemis cause im pretty sure you mentioned it in one of ur posts posts that they are
Hiya! It's true I'm kinda obsessed over Athena, Artemis, and Persephone - or the sister trio ❤️
I did indeed talk about Athena and Persephone being protective over Artemis before, but I wouldn't mind talking about them more!
Artemis is the youngest and shortest of the trio, so Athena and Persephone naturally have the sisterly urge to baby her :)))) Athena might not show it out but the big sis instinct is there in her.
When mama Leto and the twins were living being chased everywhere by the Python, it was Demeter who took them under her protection when they reached Sicily. That's how baby Artemis came to live with teenage Persephone and be free from danger for the first time since she was born.
Artemis is Persephone's first official sister (she wasn't very close to Eileithyia and Enyo at the time because they live far in Olympus), so Persephone was really excited. She doted on Artemis, giving her the best fruits and play with her all the time. Artemis loves her big sister a lot!
Since Artemis is the older twin, she always put on a brave face and be the trusting shoulder for her brother, Apollo. But she was still a kid and had fears of her own. Aside from Leto, Persephone is the one she came to the most to seek comfort.
Persephone has her mother's sheltering nature, so she is willing to spend hours just staying by Artemis' side. They don't have to talk every time, just simply sitting next to each other and rest.
Before Artemis became an official Olympian, she was still ostracized by mean people for being a bastard child of Zeus. Persephone DID NOT let anyone who disrespected her sister crawl out alive.
This one is true myth: one time, Persephone dragged a living woman to the Underworld because she ceased to worship Artemis.
Yeah, Persephone took her protective sister role very seriously.
Athena joined them rather late. Even though Athena was "born" from Zeus later than Artemis and Persephone, she is still the oldest by chronology because she was conceived by Zeus and his first wife Metis.
At first, Athena was cold, distant, and quite self-centered, only willing to do things to Zeus' favor and enhance her reputation. She's not fundamentally bad, it's just engraved into her core to always strive to be the best and she hadn't been connecting with others yet to learn sympathy.
Artemis and Persephone are the first siblings Athena truly connects with, during the time she was staying in Sicily.
Athena disapproves of Artemis' reckless tendency, sometimes gets annoyed at her like the typical oldest sister to her youngest.
Overtime, Athena softened and began to willingly help Artemis whenever she got into troubles (after giving her some scolding)
One time, Athena was teaching Persephone and Artemis weaving robes for their father (inspired by true myth), but Artemis failed miserably. So Athena made a robe in her place so she have something to present to Zeus.
Athena and Persephone were highly alerted when Orion came around due to his nasty reputation. They would follow Artemis everywhere to make sure she is never alone with him.
When Orion was being inappropriate with one of Artemis' nymphs, Athena and Persephone (and Apollo too) rushed to defend her. But upon arriving, Artemis already shot down the guy, only sparing him because she didn't want hassle with Poseidon.
The three of them continue to stay by her side from that day in case Orion ever return for revenge.
When Orion died from his own hubris and the scorpion's sting, Persephone and Apollo suggested to turn him into a constellation and be forever chased by the giant scorpion as punishment.
Athena tried not to fight Artemis during the Trojan war. When Artemis challenged Hera and got beaten, Athena quietly scolded her for her insolence but still went to check up on Artemis.
Athena also went to Hera asking her not to mind Artemis too much and just ignore her (so that Hera won't beat up Artemis again)

Tools of the Trade for Learning Cybersecurity
I created this post for the Studyblr Masterpost Jam, check out the tag for more cool masterposts from folks in the studyblr community!
Cybersecurity professionals use a lot of different tools to get the job done. There are plenty of fancy and expensive tools that enterprise security teams use, but luckily there are also lots of brilliant people writing free and open-source software. In this post, I'm going to list some popular free tools that you can download right now to practice and learn with.
In my opinion, one of the most important tools you can learn how to use is a virtual machine. If you're not already familiar with Linux, this is a great way to learn. VMs are helpful for separating all your security tools from your everyday OS, isolating potentially malicious files, and just generally experimenting. You'll need to use something like VirtualBox or VMWare Workstation (Workstation Pro is now free for personal use, but they make you jump through hoops to download it).
Below is a list of some popular cybersecurity-focused Linux distributions that come with lots of tools pre-installed:
Kali is a popular distro that comes loaded with tools for penetration testing
REMnux is a distro built for malware analysis
honorable mention for FLARE-VM, which is not a VM on its own, but a set of scripts for setting up a malware analysis workstation & installing tools on a Windows VM.
SANS maintains several different distros that are used in their courses. You'll need to create an account to download them, but they're all free:
Slingshot is built for penetration testing
SIFT Workstation is a distro that comes with lots of tools for digital forensics
These distros can be kind of overwhelming if you don't know how to use most of the pre-installed software yet, so just starting with a regular Linux distribution and installing tools as you want to learn them is another good choice for learning.
Free Software
Wireshark: sniff packets and explore network protocols
Ghidra and the free version of IDA Pro are the top picks for reverse engineering
for digital forensics, check out Eric Zimmerman's tools - there are many different ones for exploring & analyzing different forensic artifacts
pwntools is a super useful Python library for solving binary exploitation CTF challenges
CyberChef is a tool that makes it easy to manipulate data - encryption & decryption, encoding & decoding, formatting, conversions… CyberChef gives you a lot to work with (and there's a web version - no installation required!).
Burp Suite is a handy tool for web security testing that has a free community edition
Metasploit is a popular penetration testing framework, check out Metasploitable if you want a target to practice with
SANS also has a list of free tools that's worth checking out.
Programming Languages
Knowing how to write code isn't a hard requirement for learning cybersecurity, but it's incredibly useful. Any programming language will do, especially since learning one will make it easy to pick up others, but these are some common ones that security folks use:
Python is quick to write, easy to learn, and since it's so popular, there are lots of helpful libraries out there.
PowerShell is useful for automating things in the Windows world. It's built on .NET, so you can practically dip into writing C# if you need a bit more power.
Go is a relatively new language, but it's popular and there are some security tools written in it.
Rust is another new-ish language that's designed for memory safety and it has a wonderful community. There's a bit of a steep learning curve, but learning Rust makes you understand how memory bugs work and I think that's neat.
If you want to get into reverse engineering or malware analysis, you'll want to have a good grasp of C and C++.
Other Tools for Cybersecurity
There are lots of things you'll need that aren't specific to cybersecurity, like:
a good system for taking notes, whether that's pen & paper or software-based. I recommend using something that lets you work in plain text or close to it.
general command line familiarity + basic knowledge of CLI text editors (nano is great, but what if you have to work with a system that only has vi?)
familiarity with git and docker will be helpful
There are countless scripts and programs out there, but the most important thing is understanding what your tools do and how they work. There is no magic "hack this system" or "solve this forensics case" button. Tools are great for speeding up the process, but you have to know what the process is. Definitely take some time to learn how to use them, but don't base your entire understanding of security on code that someone else wrote. That's how you end up as a "script kiddie", and your skills and knowledge will be limited.
Feel free to send me an ask if you have questions about any specific tool or something you found that I haven't listed. I have approximate knowledge of many things, and if I don't have an answer I can at least help point you in the right direction.

i had a really vivid dream about a made-up species of parasite. like i was so convinced they were real i had to google them to make sure they weren't.
anyway i made some really crude drawings because if i had to deal with seeing them so do you
TW for human bones, crudely drawn blood, general nastiness and a really long yap post under the cut
skulls were screenshotted from the interactive 3d google model, which directed me to here btw... i did not have the patience to put effort into learning anatomy... sorry. credits to biodigital!!!
alright SO. they're called underlings. i think. they liked to call themselves a lot of different names but "underling" was the most commonly used term by humans and it's the name i'll use in this post
Tumblr media
LARVAL STAGE 1
is the size of a small piece of thread. they sneak into food, usually food that's been in a damp part of the wilderness awhile (eg. foraged mushrooms, shade-loving plants, wild game meat), hoping to be eaten by humans. they sit in the intestines for a few days, gorging on the host's semi-digested meals until they reach stage 2
LARVAL STAGE 2
is about the size of a baby ball python. it eats its way through the intestine lining and squiggles up the spine like a corkscrew until it reaches the skull. some of them will crawl all the way up the intestines, through the entire digestive system and use the back of the nasal cavity to reach the skull (VERY UNPLEASANT) but the former is the more common tactic. it'll hollow out a little nook for itself in the skull and attach itself to the brain.
TAKEOVER STAGE
takes exactly 6 minutes for almost all cases. i'm not super well-versed in how the nervous system works, so exactly HOW this stage happens is a mystery.
the underling will search through the host's brain and begin communicating in whichever language they're most fluent in. it's unclear whether the creature is physically capable of making sounds or if the host can only "hear" it through their thoughts. mostly, it just gloats about all the havoc it will wreak with its new body. the host will lose feeling in their extremities, then the ability to move them, then they experience a sort of "dullness" to their emotions. calm is the wrong word... it's as though the ability to feel strong emotions fades. finally, the host's thoughts will slow and fade as well.
PUPATION(???)
after this, the underling takes full control of the host's body. it will need to consume 7-20 humans (they don't eat their own host for some reason) before reaching maturity, so it has to be strategic about not being caught by authorities before it can reach its desired body count. most if not ALL of it's understanding of the world comes from the host's brain. it'll typically target the people emotionally closest to the host. whether this is for convenience, nutritional benefit or just to psychologically torment the host is unclear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
after reaching maturity, they burst free from the skull and take off into the night sky like flighted manta rays, never to be seen again. some speculate they're an alien species trying to return home, and their emergent flight takes them all the way to the stars
the few lucky souls that survived long enough to hold a conversation with an underling report they're extremely xenophobic and have a sort of fascination with ruling not just the planet, but "all of existence"

Introduction
Heya it’s mith! This is a nickname from my original name. I am Tamil and I’m from the state of Tamilnadu from south India :)
This is a study or/blog about my life as a CBSE student where I’ll post about motivation, any interesting topics and just tips that I found useful. I am planning on posting my 11th chemistry notes by the end of this year, once I’ve finished typing them up as I’ve hand written them! So you will see resources being posted!!
I am a high-school student, 17 years old ( year 12/ 12th grade )studying in the science stream. My subjects include —
Physics.
Chemistry.
Mathematics.
Computer Science (python)
English
Why a studyblr?
I opened this studyblr in order to stay productive and help others to do so too if I can. Also through this account I would like to share bits of my student life and motivate other students to do what a student should do like - study and enjoy life. I will post a lot about how to get motivation and how I study certain subjects and these posts will update as I go along!
Any competitive exams?
I am doing four exams ( sobs) which are for design and architecture respectively. These are NATA, JEE paper 2 ( this includes, maths, drawing and aptitude , not physics chemistry and maths ) , UCEED ( design) and NIFT ( design)
Future career?
I am hoping to study design or architecture and maybe get a literature or business degree as a side goal.
Any goals for 2025?
I wanna learn foreign languages such as Italian since it’s my current obsession. I’ve already learnt a bit of French so I’m planning on learning all of the Romance languages, so you will see me post about language learning too!!
More about me:
I was born in England and I’ve lived in India and England on and off, every few years I’d shift to England and then come back to India. I did my boards (10th) in the uk in the form of GCSEs. GCSEs are usually done in 10th and 11th so I’m repeating a year again in India so it’s easier for me for my 12th boards!
For Quick Navigation:

Language learning!
Tagged as #languageblr - I post about my progress in learning languages, this will be separate to my daily logs so i won’t post whatever I learnt in languages in my daily logs. I might create a separate account for langauges alone!!
Tips
Tagged as #chemtips, #mathtips, #phytips, #Cstips and #engtips - these tags are specifically for tips that I’d found useful sharing in that particular subject! You can also use the tag #tips to find all the tips and tricks in one go!
Notes!
Tagged as #notetaking- as I have said earlier, I am planning on posting my chemistry notes by the end of December once I’ve finished typing them up and making them colourful to read. This will be free Ofc, and it does follow the ncert pattern.
Well nice meeting you, maybe drop a comment so that I can know you too?
( note: the template for this introduction was heavily inspired by another blogger! pxasee , do check her account out too!!)
I'm hoping for the best to happen and also working for it!! <3 Show some support please for this account and have a great day/ night!!

How do you make mods?
To answer in short terms: Ren’py!
In longer terms, I use a program called Ren’py, which is basically a visual novel game making software, and the software used to create OLBA, along with VS code (you don’t need this though, it was just downloaded on my computer already LOL) to be able to actually view the code itself.
There’s plenty of information about Ren’py itself in forums and their docs, and learning the Ren’py language itself isn’t that difficult if you go through a tutorial or two or already have some preexisting knowledge of the Python coding language.
If you’re looking to make a OLBA mod yourself, this is the way I would do it, not a means to an end, feel free to adapt if you find a way that works easier for you:
Download Ren’py, specifically THIS version, as other versions will not be compatible with OLBA. (You can use 7zip to unzip it)
Crack open Ren’py, and just create a new project, name it whatever you want, just make sure it’s 1080 by 1920, everything else doesn’t matter.
Locate your legitimate game files and feel free to just copy and paste everything from the legitimate OLBA folder into your new project (you can find its folder in documents by default iirc, but if not there, try searching for it by name), don't worry about keeping any of the old files in there, just overwrite all of it.
Tumblr media
legitimate game files ↑ new project files ↓
Tumblr media
Before you can begin editing the scripts or DLCs however, you need to actually be able to see them. You can't because they are in .rpa files, which are basically secured ren'py folders. To crack them open, do these steps:
Find these files in the "game" folder of your new Ren'py project. The archive.rpa file contains everything in the main game. Depending on what DLCs, if any, you have, you may see additional .rpa files with the titles of the DLC you own.
Tumblr media
2. Move these files out into a new folder on your desktop. Download this extractor and place it in the same new folder on your desktop. EX:
Tumblr media
2. One by one, drop the files onto the rpaExtract.exe Icon. Afterward, you should get some folders with the names corresponding to the .rpa files and potentially an image folder. (NOTE: the archive.rpa file is not contained in one folder, meaning ALL the files will just appear freely, I recommend moving all the other finished folders back into the "game" folder before you do this one so you don't end up confused/overwhelmed!) (my files, excluding the archive.rpa files)
Tumblr media
3. You can just delete the .rpa files now, you won't need them, and put the all new folders/files you got back into the "game" folder.
Now you will be free to go into Ren'py and click "open project" to edit the scripts to your heart's content! At this point, if you're experienced with Ren'py things should be looking a bit more familiar, if not, I recommend watching some ren'py tutorials to learn the ropes or just shoot me a message and I'd be happy to help you out in any way I can.
Lastly, when you finish your mod, if you want to be able to use it in a legitimate game, it depends on whether it's an edit of an existing script or adds a completely new one: If it's an edit, just get whatever files you edited and follow my instructions here in this "how to download OLBA mods tutorial". As for a mod that adds completely new scripts, you will still have files that are just edited from the original game, so for those scripts follow the tutorial above. As for original scripts/images/sounds etc you should be able to just paste them into your legitimate game folder and shouldn't have to bother with converting them to a .rpa file at all. I hope this helped answer anyone's questions! Can't wait to see what you guys make :) If you ever need help or have questions, my messages are always open!

Hello hello! It's me DFP
I'm wondering where you learned/are you learning to Code? I find the structure of your game quite entertaining and I like to take a little inspiration from it (If I'm allowed)
And I tried to make images that are options but apparently I'm still a long way from leaving the beta of my projects So I wanted to seek advice from you
(Also, if this is not the correct account to ask this I apologize, but if you have some very good advice that can help me please feel free to go to my DMs)
Hello DFP! :3 (I'm not exactly sure what you mean by structure sorry, but probably yes haha)
I didn't learn coding. In fact, the scariest part of my game is the code itself! I would like to take classes in art and coding someday! It's just not a great time in my country to be spending money atm ahahahaha- (cries in national housing and inflation crisis)
If you're using Renpy to make a VN, smart people would recommend giving the Renpy and Python's offcal guides a good look and watching Renpy tutorials on youtube.
For me, I'm the kinda person that only takes in information by dissecting and breaking things, then learning from the mistakes. I looked at the front page of the Python pdf, and it made my ADHD repossess my body despite being on the max dose of ritalin. I immediately closed it then skimmed through the Renpy quickstart, not really taking in any of the information, jumped right into designing the main menu, minced up the code, caught a bunch of errors, and had to check out fourms for fixes.
Have some random tips that may or may not be helpful since I don't know your skill level and I, am infact, not skilled in Renpy, I have no idea what I'm doing half the time! :3
Make new files for everything, don't just put it all in the script or it's going to get ridiculous.
Scripts get LONG use # and add notes, so you can CTRL + F and find stuff easily.
If you're like me, check out renpy's reddit/lemma soft fourms, if you're not getting good goog search results, it might be the words you're using, I had this issue a lot, try changing up words in your question (options/preferences/choices/decisions)
When you're learning copy and paste the code/answer, once you know the the code and can type it out fast, then starting manually typing it out.
Always check the dates on posts, there's a bunch of old renpy guides/fourms that don't work anymore.
There is more than one way to skin a dingo (sorry kevin), if you've found a fix that seems ridiculous but it's working, keep it!
If you have anger problems prepare to get fuckin' pissed off! Before you start coding have a coffee/bottle of water/energy drink beside you, so you have to walk away to take angry piss breaks and can clear your head.
If you absolutely cannot figure something out, make a copy, put it aside and work on something else until you're a little more skilled.
I have three copies of olie, the one that works, the one that I'm experimenting on, and the one on a USB I copy when I get drunk and forget which is my "fuck around" code and which is my "don't touch it, it works" code and I annihilate my game. Make regular backups to your USB for any emergencies, houses burn down. Limit your drinking while coding.
Compare code to the game base if you're coming up with errors. Goog the exact error that pops up when the game crashes. (renpy expected statement)
Tumblr media
Click the blue text and it'll take you to it. Sometimes it's not very accurate and you need to look a little above or below the line the error happened. 70% of the time your error is a missing space or "," or an extra space!
I also recommend checking out all the shortcuts on your code editing software (I'm using visual studio code!) I was manually adding indents to each line, which was wasting an insane amount of time LMAO ;w;
I'm not exactly sure what you mean by images that are options, but I'm guessing an imagebutton? If you search "renpy imagebutton" there's a few forums and tutorials that will guide you but it's like this.
Tumblr media
You need a screen for your buttons, an image, if you're feeling funky add transforms to the button, else just use a different image for idle/hover!
Add the anchor before you do xpos/ypos because it messes around with the positions and you'll have to re-adjust the xpos/ypos again. You need anchor for the transitions to work properly.
If you want the button to make a sound on click add activate_sound or remove it if you don't want one, it's optional.
This is how you make the transform, you can do a TON of different transforms. This is a simple idle/hover transform. ease is the animation type/speed, alpha is transparency, 1.0 is fully visible, 0.0 is transparent, at 0.5 on idle, it has a dimmed effect. the zoom makes it bigger. Make a new file for this one!
Tumblr media
Buttons have a TON of actions to choose from, this is a time I actually would checkout renpy's offical guides. This one does the same as a jump at the end of a label or choice.
If you want your game to not pause when your buttons are visible, just use "show screen nameofthescreenhere zorder 20" (zorder is the layers, 20 is like usually the top, you can go higher though)
If you want your game to pause while the screen is up, use call screen instead of show!
Tumblr media
I probably won't do too many of these coding/renpy support things on my tumblr but, OLIE'S discord server has a few game dev channels for coding support if you'd want to join there! :3
I wish you well and goodluck on your game!!! 💖🫡🍀

Jungkook: 𝓖𝓻𝓮𝓮𝓭𝔂 (Teaser)
Tumblr media
Jewels, Money, Shiny things- stuff he's been collecting before he stumbled upon you. Now the only thing he's greedy for is you.
Tags/Warnings: Alien!Jungkook, Cat Hybrid!Reader, Major fluff!, suggestive themes & heavy flirting, Primal themes (biting, grooming aka he licks her neck lol, scenting, manhandling), size difference because come on this is my content and you know my kinks by now don't act surprised
⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰ ⋱⋰⋱⋰ ⋱
There's a low rumbling sound in his chest as he holds you close to himself, nosing along the crook of your neck.
It sounds awfully like those CGI-Dinosaurs in movies back on earth- and you know he's just as dangerous as the directors of these sci-fi movies intended their creatures to be. His heavy, snake-like tail has you wrapped securely to himself on his lap, hands free to roam over your body as if he needs to re-paint your image back into his mind using only his fingers and palms. His tongue traces over your skin, marking you, seemingly on a mission to find the perfect spot, before his teeth bite the skin, leaving his mark on yoir body amongst so many others, chuckling when you begin to squirm a little at his actions, your soft cat tail a stark contrast to his own.
You're like the prey in the python's grip- but this predator has chosen to feast on you in different ways.
"Hm.. are you happy, little thing?" He asks you, and you nod, leaning into him, your soft cat ears brushing against his cheek as you purr- a sound he's learned earth's cats make when they feel good, making him smile. "I'm glad." He offers, laying down with you as his tail curls around the both of your bodies, warm orange glow from outside his home bleeding in and bathing you both in shades of gold. It doesn't matter though how warm the suns on his planet shines-
Your favorite sunspot will always be him.
