Fuck remember when you could use your tv without it being hell? I specifically don't have a "smart" tv so my tv doesn't do this but now the roku is doing it. You can look at the list of international Oscar winning films or other film prizes and festivals (like Cannnes, Berlinale, Venice, tiff etc)

If your town has an indie cinema and/or a university there's a high chance that international films will be screened throughout the year

How do you approach them?

There is no right or wrong way to do this. You can watch subtitled or dubbed films. You can try to google the most famous film, actor or director from a country and try to watch that first. You can try to find some mainstream romcom or any other genre you might already enjoy. You can get obsessed with a random actor or director and just go through their entire work. You can start by checking out countries you're already interested in or know something about or you pick a random one. You could even do it alphabetically if that's more fun for you. You can do one film per country or do a deep dive into one country before moving on.

The most important thing is that you're having fun.

“So let me get this straight,” Himeko began as she watched lay back into the couch, soda in hand with a bag of chips laying in your lap, “you went to Herta’s space station, met Stelle, played Go Fish with Stelle and Dan Heng before the Legion arrived, stood up and said ‘my job here is done,’ and then left?”

You grinned, “yep, and March 7th oh so loudly declared, ‘you didn’t even do anything!!’ it was quite hilarious,” you said as you took another swig of your soda, “besides, I’m not worried. Those three will be just fine.”

Welt was the next one to come up to you, “how are you sure?”

Glancing at the man, you gave him a thumbs up, “I’m not! Just a gut feeling is all, I mean, I’m not like the people on the Luofu who have the divine foresight and crap like that,” you took another sip of your soda, “but anyway, those guys should be here any moment… which reminds me, you all for real letting a stellaron aboard this train?”

You looked over at the doors as they opened up, March coming barreling through a moment later, “yo!”

March shoved her pointer finger into your chest, “don’t you ‘yo’ me! You left us there.”

You pouted and raised your hands in mock surrender, “but I had to, I was going to miss the season finale of my favorite anime, and you know I hate watching reruns. Besides, I couldn’t let Pompom spoil it again for me…”

“You’re unbelievable!”

March says this with an exasperated expression while throwing her hands up in the air as she walked away. Waving goodbye to March as she was probably going to her room, you then brought your attention to Dan Heng, “well?”

“It was alright, we didn’t need you there.”

“See! I knew you three will be alright,” You stood up from the couch, your bag of chips and soda being placed onto the table as you walked up to Dan Heng and the new trailblazer.

“The name is y/n, and that was a fun game of Gold Fish! Let’s play again sometime, ok?”

“It’s Go Fish,” Dan Heng lightly reminded again as Stelle took your hand and gave it a good shake.

“You sure,” you asked.

“Positive.”

“But Gold Fish sounds so much better,” you say as you let go of Stelle’s hand and shift your focus to Dan Heng.

“It only sounds good and correct because that is what you got used to saying. It’s kind of like Roku and Ruko. You know that device you hook up to your tv for streaming different apps.”

“Ahhh, that makes sense.”

Dan Heng knew you were just playing around, but he found that he quite liked and even looked forward to these interactions with you, but he knew that it won’t last forever. He remembers when you first joined the Astral Express and how you said you won’t be staying long.

He’s not entirely sure when you plan on leaving, but he hopes it won’t be soon.

You felt a tap on your shoulder and looked to see Stelle, “what’s up?”

Stelle held up the playing cards from before and you grinned, “oh? Wanna get beat again?”

“I’m pretty sure you left when I started winning.”

You rolled your eyes, “whatever Dan Heng, let’s just play.”

You grabbed Dan Heng’s and Stelle’s hands and moved your way to the couch. Pompom, Himeko, and Welt all the while could only shake their heads at the scene.

“Well, while those three play around, it’s time to go to our next destination!”

You perked up at that from the spot on the couch, “aww… already? I didn’t get the chance to get souvenirs yet…”

Pompom ignored you “time to get this train moving!”

Before you could cry a river at being ignored, Dan Heng held out a small phone charm for you, “here.”

You grinned at the small piece of jewelry before nudging Dan Heng’s shoulder, “aww, it’s a spear and it looks like yours too! How thoughtful!”

“It may not be the souvenir that you were hoping for, but I’m glad you liked it.”

You nodded enthusiastically and quickly pulled out your phone to hook the charm on, and as you did so, the Express was beginning to warp so you looked to Stelle, “hold on tight, it’s going to get a bit…bumpy.”

When you looked away to shuffle the cards in your hands, you didn’t notice how both Dan Heng and Stelle grabbed onto your sleeve. They couldn’t quite explain the reason of why they did it, but they just felt like if something went wrong, you would be able to save them just fine (even if you didn’t do anything on the space station or did anything ever as March liked to put it).

And they would be right on that feeling. You may have been the type to sit back and let them handle their own problems. But if the Epxress blew up or was going to crash, well, maybe it would of been alright for an aeon like yourself to save them.

Granted, you hoped something like that doesn't have to happen because you quite liked having them not know you're an aeon. Heh.

My experience w/ Victory+ as a platform:

From watching Ducks games this season, they are only available for 2-3 days after first broadcast. I'd like to know how long they plan to keep the WHL games up!

Ongoing production quality issues. De-synced audio, glitchy video. Not the most stable or polished platform so I'm wondering how that's gonna go with the WHL given they've gotta manage 22 team broadcasts.

Video player is kinda ass. Clunky, no timestamps for goals or period markers, no closed caption options.

And I mean, the jankiness of any Major Junior broadcast is part of the charm - sooo much fun when I tune in for Wednesday Nights in the Dub!! But I'd love to.experience the actual hockey too <3

thinking about how tenna is the tv Set and not just the tv like he's the monitor and the antennae and probably any attached vhs/dvd/vcr doodads. because he's well he's mr ant tenna, and he represents the shows broadcasting on Terrestrial Television specifically, hence his extreme obsolescence. kris is a pbs kid.

Maybe watching a streaming network with his monitor wouldn't solve his problem because the antennae are part of Him. you're just using him for something he's not. I don't really think it works like that but it's an interesting idea nonetheless.

Maybe everything that plugs into tenna becomes part of him. so if you attach a little roku bug to him then that's fine. less angsty.

Japanese Cinema Month :High and Low

So for my second film of the month....Well my Roku went a little nutty (We fixed it dont worry but isnt the streaming age fun gang ) ,so I had to watch a blu ray and thankfully I had just gotten this one from Criterion recently as a blind buy .Now you might be wondering why I picked this movie ....HOnestly .....I was sold soley on the premise

In this 1963 film shoe factory manager Kingo Gondo (Toshiro Mifune ) gets a phone call that his son Jun (Toshio Egi ) is kidnapped........Thing is Jun is fine ,but his best friend Shinichi (Masahiko Shimizu) is missing....The kidnapper got the wrong kid .Gondo is put ina bind ,as he actually doesnt have the money needed for the ransom and hes currently at risk of being voted out of his company ,and if he were to pay he risks ruin for his entire family but if he doesnt a boy will die

Now it is this premise that intrigued me to the film,will a guy ruin himself to do the selfless thing.....But what I find interesting is thats just the first half ,and the second part of the film is a procedural of the cops trying to find the kidnappers .Now this film.....Really risked not working ,cause I was so into the ethical question and interpersonal character drama of the first half,that making it a "Catch the criminal" film in the second hour couldve been really boring,but it works.The second half of the film actually reminds me of the Fritz Lang classic M and if Im comparing to Fritz Lang thats a hig compliment .Two elements I really liked in the second half were how the kidnapped boys father played into it and especially the final scene with the villain

I also wanna point out this is my second non period piece I have seen by Akira Kurosawa.My previous more contemporary film from him was Dreams.....Though that film is fantasy while this film is firmly a crime drama .What I like about Kurosawas direction is it feels like....Hes aware of what audiences could criticise....And adresses those issues in interesting ways ,most notably in the empathy he shows both the Gondo and the films villain

This is one of those rare movies where I feel every character right down to the most minor side character is perfectly cast ,like Yutaka Sada as the worried meek single father ,Kenjiro Ishiyama as the gruff cop ,Tatsuya Mihashi as Gondos cutthroat assistant ,and Kyoko Kagawa as Reiko the wife of our lead pleading with him to do the right thing.Even minor characters like the shoe executives or the guy incinerating things are really memorable . Tatsuya Nakadai is very solid and likeable as the lead investigator.I must heap praises on Tsutomo Yamazaki who plays the villain does a fabulous job as a guy who does heinous things and has a cold exterior .....To hide he is just a bitter broken guy who I feel a little bad for ,and he does this in just a few scenes .Finally we got our lead played by the great Toshiro Mifune ,who is to no ones surprise really good in this ,as a guy whose done some shady stuff but we see regain his humanity ,taking a character who really couldve been NOT sympathetic and making me feel for him .The funny thing is Mifune is so great here......It honestly makes me more impressed with the cast cause every characterjust feels like the right character for this story ,and Mifune feels uspoorted and not like he overshadows anyone else

Been having lots of weird dreams lately (blimp crashing into my house, trying and failing to run errands due to crowds of rowdy teens somehow getting me kicked out of every store, car being catapulted through the air and nearly crushing me, etc) and I had a fandom-ish related one the other night that I've got to share.

I was watching Stuart Little, except it was a new "secret" version of it with a totally different storyline. In this dream version, Michael J. Fox played a normal human character who had been cursed to live his life as a small mouse until he found true love and broke the spell. So the movie was him trying to find a woman who could see past his mouse form and fall in love with him.

He eventually did, and there was a scene out in the forest where the curse was broken, and he transformed back into his human self. Then, he and the woman leaned in for a kiss, but the movie suddenly stopped and switched to this behind the scenes feature where the director and other crew were troubled by the height difference between MJF and his costar. She was much, much taller, and so they were saying the kiss would be awkward.

Their solution? They dug a very deep hole and had the actress stand in it, which brought her to eye level with MJF. Then they went back to filming, and that's where the dream ended.

I'm almost certain this was spurred on by me seeing Stuart Little advertised on Roku the other day as a promoted movie to stream (no idea why they picked that particular movie). Anyway, it was funny. I remember thinking to myself "This isn't how I remember the movie going..."

[NEWS] Sato Ryuji has been Cast in the TV Drama "With You I Bloom: The Shinsengumi Youth Chronicle"

DESCRIPTION

"With You I Bloom: The Shinsengumi Youth Chronicle" (Japanese title: Kimi to Yukite Saku ~ Shinsengumi Seishun Roku~) is a live action adaptation of the manga called "Shinsengumi" by Tezuka Osamu.

It tells the story of Fukakusa Kyujuro a young man who wants revenge for the death of his father, and joins the Shinsengumi in search for this justice.

Sato Ryuji plays a mysterious man who comes to Kyujuro's aid when he meets the enemy who killed his father.
