I am SO delighted that the book parcel arrived, and that you are enjoying the contents, wolf!!! When I started fanbinding, I had this moment of realizing I didn't want to just collect volumes of fic that sat on my shelf for only me, so it was a pure delight to start off binding your fic and sharing it with you. As a writer myself, I am absolutely tickled to share the experience of holding your words bound up as a book, but also wrapped up in my best expression (warts and all) of how much your writing means to me. Fandom is the besttttt.

I'll share some deets about each bind in the days to come! But for now, flail! Fandom love!

Yesterday afternoon, when I was in a bit of a frazzle getting ready to go out, the postie knocked on my door and delivered the most magical gift I've ever received 🥹

I am utterly blown away by Plor's generosity, skill, and attention to detail. These have become the most treasured items on my bookshelf... dare I say my home (don't tell my cat)?!

Everybody Hates a Tourist

That colour combination! The texts-as-a-blurb! The magical burst of rainbows (and pineapples!)! And don't even get my started on the interiors...

The postcard picture - also found on the fic's banner and Spotify playlist - made me gasp. And each chapter has its own gorgeous illustration, and - god, can we talk about drop caps please?! And the texts?

Under Giant Mountains

The foiling here is just *chef's kiss*, and that colour green is so gorgeous. The dragon! The quote! I also love the size of this one, it's so smart to choose a smaller format, it feels like a proper vintage book, like something found on Draco's shelf in his little cabin. Absolute perfection.

I cannot believe I am holding a bound Dron book in my hands 😭 And one with such thoughtful artwork, so true to the story! The record player! The chess board with the chess pieces, weed and vinyls! I want the endpaper for this one plastered on my walls please... it's so Ron.

Kinkuary '23

When I opened the package and unwrapped this one last, I thought Plor had sent me a vintage book, but then after flipping through it, I realised it was covered in a modesty jacket 😈 Which I love, because again, it feels so... naughty and Victorian 😌 Picking that quote from the gay orgy fic is the absolutely cherry here. Brilliant! Inspired!

There is so much detail here I don't even know where to start. I love how each story includes its description, how each scene is separated with handcuffs, and... the index! Reading through some of my (quite frankly insane) tags had me absolutely howling (shoutout to "Draco Malfoy... is HORNY").

Here they all are, taking pride of place on my shelf. Honestly, the most beautiful gift. I can't even begin to explain what it feels like to hold my own writing, in black and white and on paper, in my hands. So surreal. I am so, so grateful. Thank you so much Plor, you lovely, lovely human!

I am full speed ahead on the paperback binding train. This weekend's binds - Heal Thyself (Astolat) and isn't a kingdom and palindrome (@garagepaperback).

The details:

I made these with the intention of having a few things to show for myself when I sign up for the FTH bazaar. The typesets are quick and dirty, adapting @citrusses' Affinity files and popping in the particulars of each fic. The covers are designed in Canva, after extensive staring at a google search and trying to figure out what makes a book cover look commercial. They're all legal quartos, which makes for a nice pocket-sized book.

The cover construction itself I'm quite pleased with. They're printed on an inkjet printer (I'm currently abusing a free HP instant ink subscription) on 80lb cardstock and coated with a satin finish laminating sheet. The end result feels under the fingers like something you'd pick up in a bookshop.

The things that went wrong:

I'm still working on my double fan technique. I'm having more success with balancing the block on binder clips rather than transferring it into a press, but for each of these there were a few pages where I needed to go back with a very small paintbrush and a dab of glue.

I love my guillotine. I do. The edges are delightful and crisp, but it does leave an indent on the spine where I squish the book into place. This may be unavoidable.

The grain direction is off. That's actually unavoidable because I don't feel like buying new paper right now.

Sometimes your title is off-center and that's just a thing that happens because math is hard.

AHHHH I am SO excited to share this bind—but first, I want to say thank you to Soph for letting me make (my first ever) author copies for this story. I'm definitely a beginner bookbinder but I truly hope I've done this fic justice <3

The design process for this bind was probably one of my favorite parts. I decided to go with some really simple design elements in comparison to my other binds, primarily because I felt it was more fitting for the story, and I was inspired by some of the design choices made in my personal copy of Song of Achilles.

(The dedications are all pulled from Soph's playlist for the fic, and each quote reminds me of that particular volume, given that there are three. Pictured above is the dedication for the first volume.)

Some elements of this bind were entirely new to me, such as the fact that it was an in-boards three piece bradel binding. It was also my first time painting edges, as well as rounding spines. Neither of these things turned out perfect, even after completing personal copies, but i did learn a lot of don't's.

One of the things that I did in the process of this bind that I LOVED was combining two different decoration styles. I've done covers that are either completely foiled, or completely HTV—but not both. For this cover design, I was struggling to figure out the best way to make the upside-down antlers on the cover pop. Adding HTV over a full foil cover was the perfect way to get the look I wanted:

As large a bind as this was, it was so so much fun to bring to life this incredible story that holds such a special place in my heart as well as the fandom's.

I'm finally done with this one! This is the first-ever fanfic that drew me into the Jeverus pairing, and now I can't stop reading fanfics featuring these two! I'm incredibly grateful that I stumbled upon this beautiful piece, and I highly recommend it if you haven't read it yet. ❤

The meaning of dandelions, by Endrina. This is the second volume of "The Secret Language of Plants".

As with most of my bindings, this book is "not perfct" at all, yet it joins my bibliographic collection of beloved imperfections. I like how it turned out despite everything.

This tome is full of errors due to my lack of concentration. I think I should change the name of this blog to "Adventures of an ADD fic binder". As some of my worst ADD days, yesterday wasn't the best day for me to try anything! The thing is, I had a great time binding this weekend, so no amount of mistakes will take that away. I still like my little green book.

Unlike volume 1, this time I remembered to put the headbands, yet I forgot the bookmark. More importantly, I got the series name wrong on the spine!

What I like?

I like the green cover, and how it looks next to its companion, the yellow tome. Likewise, the little dandelion seed on the back cover really charms me.

What could I have done better?

Apart from placing the correct title of the series?, I could have transferred the HTV with less temperature. There are plate marks on the cover.

I should have added the endpapers - I had them ready and forgot!

Plus, add the bookmark.

Bound this fic for another binder meetup! It's so nice having other bookbinders that love nearby so we can get together 💜 We all bound this fic, and it's so fun to see how different all our binds are! They are all beautiful, and I can't wait for the other's to share theirs!

For mine, I used printable canvas (printed on the backside) and did a 3 piece bind. I really wanted to showcase the split of how Hermione and Draco invisioned their lives.

(Re)Bound: Polar Night/Midnight Sun by me (@toomuchplor)

It’s been nearly a year since I started bookbinding, so I decided it was time to revisit the first fic I ever set.

I'll do a post with side-by-side photos another time but suffice it to say, it's not so clear to me that it's like 'first book bad, this book good'.

And if you're like, wow, Plor is posting a lot of binds this week -- you are correct. I'm on vacation this week, but also I'm wrapping up a few things that were WIPs for weeks. Lots of victory laps, but this is the last one!

I did my first typeset in Word before quickly switching to InDesign (which I have for work reasons anyway) so I wound up designing from scratch. (By the way, I’m very happy to share typesets if anyone is ever interested — for personal use only, of course!)

I used Canva to create the cover page and chapter headers in this cute watercolour style. And the end papers are pretty chiyogami from a paper store in Toronto.

I rounded the spine, but it didn’t need backing as the swell wasn’t much. I am still figuring out rounding for sure — the hardest part is getting the text block and spine stable enough to trim the head and tail straight afterwards, at least for me!

Sewn faux double core silk endbands on a 2 mm leather cord core.

I dithered about the case cover art for weeks while I did a million other projects. I knew I wanted to try something new but couldn’t find the right approach or technique to inspire me. Then I randomly tried a paper onlay for a blank book I was making and had my eureka moment.

The cover design is drawn by me in Illustrator, then cut from chiyogami by my cricut. I used a PVA/corn starch paste 50-50 mix to glue on the paper directly to the cover before the gold HTV outline was applied. The gold is partly decorative and partly to protect the edge of the onlay from friction/wear.

I am obsessed with how this looks. It’s quilting and paper art and mosaic all together? I can see myself doing this style more for sure.

One challenge is that once it’s glued up, you have exactly one chance to place the paper onlay on the cover — you can’t pick it up and try again because even with mix, the glue marks the fabric. So you need steady hands and good planning. I’m wondering about transfer tape or maybe even post it flags to help guide me in future projects? I'm pleased with the result but it could be better.

After all that sweating and work, I was paranoid about wear and tear on the paper, so I made a dust jacket. (Shout out to @citrusses for advice and emotional support during lamination time, and to lately for chatting with me and advising me as I did the paper onlay design and work!)

fanbinding: a well-behaved woman

the story: a special request from a special friend, @femme-ecrivain's favorite dramione short. i've bound other of their work before but this was a new one for me, in a fandom i've never dabbled in. a true challenge to do the fic justice but F-E's work, as always, did the heavy lifting to create something unique and help me find my way.

binding: a little gem of a quarto in a modified sewn board/paperback hybrid. kraft paper cover with a pearlescent cardstock spine piece, all covered in an art tissue paper with a japanese blossom motif that felt sophisticated and cool and right for the fic and its cover image.

Covers for starbrigid’s phenomenal Mirror of Eurydice series. The styling is based on on the covers for some of the books on Goodreads, whose creator I was unable to find, but that specific styling was missing for a bunch of the books and so I created them all from scratch using ~*dark magic*~ (a combination of Canva and GIMP). As always, I make these because the Calibre auto-generated covers are fugly and i need better for my kobo, but I post them so other people can enjoy :)

Revenge Is Sweet By BlueHorizon6

This is my third time binding a Jeverus fanfic (and I'm currently working on a fourth 👀). I can't stress enough how much I adore this fic; the story is incredibly beautiful and raw, and the ending was written perfectly. I'm truly in love with how the author depicted James and Severus, keeping them realistic within the bittersweet storyline.
