*Glancing over it, this list's incomplete. For example, I know I did a lot more scripts than mentioned above: and certainly a whole lot more Captain Caveman than just the one credited above. (Because Mel Blanc was in those, and they're some of my favorites.) But "gang credits" and the amalgamation of shows that once were independents—for example, all the Cavey episodes got reclassified as "Flintstones Comedy Show"—have muddied the waters somewhat. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This post from @spiders-hth-is-an-outlier making it as good a time as any for a The Magicians brain dump I guess: like the post says the Qualice reunion scene is a weird and weirdly perfunctory scene, and honestly who knows what the writers were smoking for those last two episodes, but. in the secretly good show in my head, the scene is perfunctory and not particularly romantic because it's not really supposed to be, or at least the main purpose of the scene is not exactly Quentin and Alice's romance. To me the narrative problem/tension of Qualice at this point in the show is not whether they love each other. They do. They've said it and shown it in multiple ways, there's not really any need for romantic declarations. In fact Alice made a romantic declaration at the end of s3 on the muntjac, saying that Quentin was the one she loved etc. And then still destroyed the keys in Blackspire, which Quentin clearly takes as a personal betrayal, why he can't trust her. In s3 Alice loves Quentin but she doesn't trust him, not with her feelings, or with her secret plans. Which is where the many many parallels of Alice and Eliot in s4 begin! If the plot of s3 (magic gone and fairy takeover) is mostly the consequences of Quentin and Margo's choices in s2, the plot of s4 (the monster and the library) is mostly the consequences of Alice and Eliot's choices at the end of s3 (with help from Fogg). In s4 Alice and Eliot are both prisoners, and they both escape their prisons, in different ways. And a lot of the tension of this scene for me, which is linked also with the flower scene, is - can Quentin escape his prison? He's repeating the same story he told himself in pilot episode, that false dichotomy: there is the escapist dream of Fillory/fantasy/magic where Quentin finally finds the secret door and becomes someone he wants to be, where his life becomes something he wants it to be, which is childish and must be left behind for the cold hard wasteland of the adult world, of harsh reality, and you just have to suck it up and deal with it. I don't think this scene feels particularly romantic because it's not supposed to be: Quentin says he can forgive Alice, can change his notions, his expectations, but he's still trapped. He can't see the third option yet, in the garden he says: isn't the idea of Fillory enough, but does he see it yet? It's not the idea of Fillory, it's his idea of Fillory, Quentin's idea, when it says in the magicians books that the world might be a wasteland but we are not, we're the source, there's no oasis out there waiting, we create the oasis ourselves.

Tldr this scene has Quentin and Alice getting back together but it's not actually about them, it's about Quentin's fucked-up-ness. Does the show actually know this? could not tell you if you paid me.

currently reading - I've been reading a bunch of romance novels about people falling in love while filming reality tv shows lol. I have bad brain fog and fatigue right now so I can only handle things where if I miss out on some of the depth/complexity I can still follow well enough. I am a romance novel enjoyer anyway but I am appreciating them extra lately for their predictable structures and reliably happy endings!

currently watching - BBC Merlin and Twelfth Doctor era DW. I don't really like these seasons very much but I'm rewatching all of new who and it's been fun to revisit episodes I haven't seen in years. can't wait to get back to Thirteen though!! and soon on to Ncuti 😍😍

current obsession - two Bruce Springsteen albums: The Wild, the Innocent, and The E Street Shuffle and Born to Run. I never listened to his music til this summer when I finally decided it was time to give it a try and holy hell. I listened to Wild/Innocent almost every day from the beginning of July, usually more than once, and finallllllly took a break from it last week to try BtR and now I've listened to that at least twice a day since then. I don't usually get obsessed with albums like this so it's kinda a fun novel experience. I want to listen to more of his music but it'll probably be at least a couple weeks til I can tear myself away from BtR to try a new album!! part of me keeps saying "I can't believe I've been missing out on this my whole life!" but also I think now was just the right time for me to start listening to him. I think this music speaks to me now in a way it wouldn't have a few years ago! I would have liked it, but I don't think it would have resonated as much as it does. I'm just looking around me going "oh my god, are you guys hearing this?? hello???" and meanwhile everyone HAS actually been hearing it. for fifty years. lol. the first time I heard Rosalita, I literally burst into tears because I just *liked it so much*. I don't think a song has ever done that to me before. I immediately listened to it like four more times then googled it and discovered... yes. everyone loves this song. but that's really fun to me! I feel late to the party but it's a fun party and I'm thrilled to be here.

I've been having fun dancing around my house more than usual, and that's nice!

music i heard in february 2023 that was somewhat notable

(for the amount of effort put into lyrics i really ought to listen to them someday)

sparse guitar harmonics and soft vocals that combine to create a perfectly serene atmosphere. this is also endlessly curious to hear given the prior epic collage/modern classical works of the artist, yet i find their recent ambient pop turn equally as engaging.

the more I've listened to music the more I think it's occurred to me that I have a particularly soft spot these kinds of soundscape like tracks, often with few parts to them and lots of repetition, but ultimately an interesting slow and gradual evolution of the sounds. a pleasant track to calm down and reflect with after a long day.

solid progressive house with clean production and some nice vocal flourishes that remind me of tropical house for whatever reason. Not to mention a dense trance interlude halfway through and some really beautiful cover art. (i really want to see if they do any full on trance stuff)

broadly this is only a really good HtH song, but whenever the brass cuts out and the strings come in it immediately become one of my faves. … and then suffa comes in and i no longer like the song.

a chaotic melting pot of various famous and catchy samples alongside great production chops and lots of distortion combine to form some of the most fun, and overall some of my favourite dariacore thus far.

The music of the original i think is quite good, however the production was never to my taste. This on the other hand fits my preference much more (though the production isn't fully there), and I feel somehow that even with its high energy dance sound, it almost fits both Chrysalis's character and the episode's story better than the original.

The former as it signifies her and the changeling's general alien'ness/unloving nature in comparison to the ponies culture and their classical/folk/pop sound. The latter because the relentlessness of the beat emphasises how tense and dire the situation is, with the little breaks between sections/the drumfill that start the new sections almost give the ponies some hope before it being swiftly ripped away from them every time.

FAQ: What’s the difference between travel medical insurance and emergency medical evacuation coverage?

Answer: 

Travel medical insurance

This is important coverage for Step 3, 4, and 5 travelers going abroad, where your U.S. health plan may have limited glocal coverage or no coverage. Travel medical insurance usually pays for ambulance service, doctor and hospital bills and other medical expenses during your trip. You can find generous coverage limits of up to $500,000 per person, but depending on your trip you may not need that level of coverage. This can add up. I recently broke my wrist in a city where I don’t have coverage, and my insurance is paying. The costs have been HUGE. I would have been out about $10 thousand if I wasn’t insured, and I’ve seen the bills. All I had to pay was the deductible.

Medicare does not pay for health care outside the U.S., which is Step 4 and 5, and in some instances Step 3 in 5 Steps to Solo Travel. There may be a few exceptions in very limited circumstances. Some say travel medical insurance is essential for senior travelers.

If Covid is a concern, you can find travel insurance policies that cover Covid-related medical expenses if you contract the virus during your trip. Some who do cover this include: John Hancock, HTH Worldwide, GoReady, AXA, Nationwide, TravelSafe, USI and AIG.

Emergency medical evacuation coverage

This is also important coverage again for Step 3, 4 and 5 travelers, especially if you’re going to a remote area where quality medical care might be hard to find. Emergency medical evacuation insurance pays to get you to the nearest adequate medical facility. You can find coverage of $1 million per person from plenty of firms. Train travel is reliable ground transportation that is appealing to those who prefer not to fly or drive. As a passenger, you can do what you want. You may choose to enjoy the scenery, sleep, work, play, or make a friend.

My most recent train trip was from San Diego to San Luis Obispo the weekend of July 4. I took an Amtrak surf liner train from Solana Beach, California to Guadalupe, California on a busy Friday afternoon. We departed at 12:40 PM and I was able to get a seat on the top deck of a two deck train and stored my luggage above my seat. Many people were standing in the aisles for up to 20-30 minutes as it was a holiday weekend in a touristy area. The train stopped several times before going on a break in Los Angeles. The crew changed here.

The direction of my train car changed in Union Station, Lost Angeles. That was so strange for someone like me who is directionally challenged. I stayed in the same seat, but I felt like I was going in a different direction. 

And from Los Angeles heading north we went to another several stops and the conductor also reminded us that we would be slowing down to 15 miles an hour in certain spots. This is due to recent accidents on the train involving pedestrians. So the train was a little slow in some areas. That did not matter to me.  The view from the train car was outstanding along this journey. I had ocean views the entire way from Santa Barbara north to near San Luis Obispo.

We arrived in Guadalupe at 8:35 pm, 40 minutes after our scheduled arrival. It was late, and due to the lack of cell service in a remote area, it was hard to send messages that we’d be late. The train station was small, without even an office; it's  a parking lot. 

 The return trip was so different from the way there. Instead of searching many cars for a seat, I was the only one in my “Business Class' ' car when I got aboard in Guadalupe. The operator greeted me with a smile and a welcome snack kit, including some goodies to drink and eat. A few people boarded during the journey, but mostly I had the cab to myself. When it gets dark on July 4 it’s spectacular for watching fireworks. I would suggest you book yourself on a train next July 4. Find a place where you can see a lot of fireworks and enjoy the moving show.

You may have traveled by train in several other countries, so tell me about your train travels. Train trips that I have taken include across the US plus in Japan the shincasen, China’s high-speed trains, Kenya, Chile, plus eurail travel throughout France and Germany.

Today’s Mistake - Not sleeping on the plane to Europe and jet lag

My first trip across the Atlantic Ocean was a jetlag disaster. It was a Step 4 trip. I arrived in London at 9am and was so tired I could not think straight. I got myself a hotel room and all I did was want to sleep. I put my head down and then was awoken by someone who wanted to paint the room. Of course, I said no, but he kept banging. He said he couldn’t get paid until he painted. So, eventually, I let him in to paint and he did and then he left.  My mistake was not sleeping on the plane, and not adjusting my sleep cycle to be in a new time zone. Don’t do what I did. Get your time shifted before you get to the airport and sleep on the plane if at all possible.

Today’s Travel Advice: Tips on train travel: 

Use trains as an alternative to other transportation, such as driving or flying commercial airlines. It's easier to board and unboard than on a plane with the challenges of airports. Most trains run on a regular schedule and are reliable and safe. I would recommend you take a trip on a train due to the convenience and embrace the relaxation. When you arrive at your destination, you will be more refreshed.

Okay, I'm going to pick one non-Magicians fic for the list but the other four are all gonna be Magicians... what can I say, I think I've grown hugely as a writer since 2019 when I started writing for Queliot! Everything before that doesn't hold up particularly well, in my opinion. I'm also going to try really hard not to go too hard on the recency bias thing. I tend to think I'm getting better as a writer, which means I think my newer stuff is, by and large, stronger than what came before it... but let's go! In no particular order...

A Comet Pulled From Orbit (The Magicians)

This is a novel-length AU of The Magicians which combines the magic and characters from that universe with the immortality and some of the basic plot from The Old Guard comics/film. I worked harder on this fic than I ever have any other piece of writing in my life... I had tons of backstory detail for each of the characters, I plotted it out meticulously, read every word aloud to myself to smooth out the prose along the way. I think it's my most polished work, my most book-like book, and I have enormous fondness for it. It's Alice POV, but Queliot is still the romantic pairing that gets the most... screen-time, as it were. Alice and Eliot are the main characters, but it's also got Kalice, Margo/Julia, and general ensemble feels galore.

Regrets, or the Absence Thereof (The Magicians)

My favorite smut that I've written - this is a depiction of the famous Marqueliot threesome, but it's through the lens of Eliot revisiting the memory in his Happy Place, set in 4x05. So you've got Eliot watching a past version of himself, along with Margo and Quentin. It plays with Eliot's memory and sense of self, what he knew then vs. what he knows now, his mosaic memories creeping in as he watches he and Quentin have sex for the first time.

When Quentin Met Eliot (The Magicians)

It's When Harry Met Sally only with Queliot! Quentin Coldwater as Harry Burns, Eliot Waugh as Sally Albright. I've been told by people that this may be the best thing I've written, and I do feel very proud of it. Bonus points that it comes with such gorgeous art from @aniallating!

is it too late (or could this love protect me) (The Magicians)

Messy, sprawling, Quentin POV in a no-magic AU where Eliot and Quentin were friends in undergrad who have been slowly drifting apart for the past several years. Now, Quentin is engaged to Alice Quinn, when a revelation about Eliot's feelings rocks his world. I'm super fond of how this one came out, it was written really quickly and in a total writing frenzy the likes of which I have not been able to replicate often. It plays around with flashbacks and flashforwards and has a lot of my favorite lines I've ever written in it!

textual communication (Roswell, New Mexico)

And... just so not everything on the list is Queliot, this is a fic I wrote for Malex. I did a whole series where I wrote one short fic per episode of the show, 39 in total. This one is for episode 3x01 and it's a series of texts and emails between the two characters, written during a year in which they were apart. I don't even know precisely why I like this so much, it's very different from most of what I've written but I just had so fun trying the epistolary style, so to speak. I found something of the characters that I was looking for in writing it.

current show: Okay so. I've been background watching She-Hulk this week and, y'know what, it's cute. It's not flawless, and the first episode was rough, but they're having fun out there. I am not immune to "Wongers." (AND it has Josh Segarra aka Lance the ex-boyfriend in The Other Two, who delights me.)

current obsessions: I'm still deep in post-finale Better Call Saul feels. Otherwise forever on my Stucky bullshit, apparently. I got a Kindle last week to make digital library books easier to read.... aaand so far I've mostly just loaded it up with novel-length Stucky fics. (So by all means, throw recs my way.)

What are your thoughts on the latest episodes?

Plot seems very weird to me.. but at least bughead is talking to each other more, we went from barley a word in season 5 to full on investigation and plotting in season 6.

Is it safe to say that they’re on the path to getting back together?

Plot seems pretty boring, i can say that i fell asleep twice watching them.

I kinda got lost in all the storyline ngl and i dislike some of the characters storyline as well.

As for bughead, FINALLY.

Others will say they’re investigating and plotting with the help of Archie, but he’s not a big help in this. I think he’s just listening to what Betty and Jug has to say and follow their lead.

Archie’s storyline last episode was pretty dumb lol, just like him sorry.. how is he always portrayed as the hero and every character basically praise him.

It’s no secret that i’m not an Archie fan but i really want the writers to stop praising him and portraying him in this way, I think other characters should get the focus and appreciation especially when it comes to saving and protecting the town.

Now, Barchie can’t even hold a scene without Jughead in it and i take it as a good sign, even though the pregnancy test s**t is still around and i’m 50% sure it’s not betty’s but still.

And before bughead gets back together (HOPEFULLY SOON) i want them to have a real heart to heart conversation about the cheating, yes even though it seems they avoid it and act like it didn’t happen or it happened long time ago (7-8 years ago?) cause their last hth conversation was at the bunker ages ago and i feel like they didn’t talk about it very openly and was trying to protect themselves from opening a wound that was closed for a while?

crossing my fingers for this, but in the meantime, i wish you and me all the luck to understand this storyline this show is going for 🍀
