It will always piss me off to no end how willing people are to offer in conversation how much they kill bugs and why. That it doesn't matter how with-it or aware or morally upright a person is otherwise. That it doesn't even matter how much they care about the environment or animals otherwise. People who don't even just claim they care or know a lot about animals; people who actually do. Leftists. Anarchists. Vegans. Champions of animal rights. Environmentalists. Other alterhumans! Will still hear you say you won't kill a bug that's not hurting you and laugh and joke about how they're clearly not as gentle as you because they'll just kill anything that looks icky. They'll say the reason they kill invertebrates is because they don't like the way we look with absolutely zero shame or self-awareness. Like I'm supposed to think of it as a harmless bad habit. I'm tired of humans that can never know they're talking to a centipede when they casually joke about how centipedes deserve to die for being so gross-looking and I'm tired of therians who come on posts uplifting invertebrate 'kin (or worse, taking some issue with the ways we're seen) with "if bugs come in my house they have to die but otherwise I agree with this sentiment!" or "I totally agree with all of this! No exceptions! Except [insert bug that's extremely popular to hate], those need to stay AWAY from me lmao"

Hey, so I just wanted to write this here in case anybody is interested. But the idea came to mind about terms that people might be interested. (o≧▽≦)ﾉ

Therianthrope as we all know means "someone who identifies as non-human animal". Whilst otherkin is a broader term that includes non-human beings, creatures and animals.

Therianthrope is also a seperate term that originally means a person who can transform into an animal. Which has always been a bit bizare to me, and misleading to those who don't know our definition of it (community wise).

Preexisting terms i obviously didnt come up with myself are;

- Paleotherian : those who identify as prehistoric species of animals.

- Theriomythic : those who identify as mythical creatures and animals.

I came up with Arthrotherian, or even Arthrothrope, meaning someone who identifies as an animal that falls under the arthropod biological classification.

Others I thought of, for the fun of it, (keep in mind this isnt a big thing im trying to create. It's truly just all for fun), are;

- Avianthrope : Those who identify as avian animal species like birds.

- Aquarianthrope : Those who identify as aquatic species like fish, marine mammals, eels, jellyfish, squids, etc.

- Mammalianthrope : Those who identify as mammalian animal species.

If you wonder why I don't specify as small as felidaethrope or canidae, its just cause it would be like saying catkin or dogkin. Altho still easy to use. I mean, thrope imo is nicer sounding than kin (っ－＿－)っ

Concept art for a new species within the Sunset Sands Sinematic Suniverse: Mechins (pronounced meh-kin). More worldbuilding details below images.

I’ve had this idea for a while, but this is my first time trying to put it to paper. The basic concept is that they are mobile structures made of a wood pulp/paper mache-like material, analogous to termite mounds or wasp nests. The eusocial bug-like creatures that built and lives inside the structure have highly specialized castes for each of its necessary bodily functions, filling the roles of muscles, nerves, and connective fiber. Though none of these creatures are sapient on their own, they come together to form an intelligent collective conscience, that being the mind of the mechin itself.

Because the shape and structure of the hard outer parts is not determined by the resident creatures’ DNA, mechins can take on a near infinite variety of sizes and body plans. They may also incorporate materials besides just the aforementioned wood pulp, such as glass or metal, if they come across it.

The outer shell may take a more sleek, robotic form or a bumpier, organic form. This is more a matter of personal preference than anything, with tendencies from one to another varying greatly depending on region and cultural background.

The social structure of mechins is a bit more solitary than humans, with some individuals, especially larger ones. behaving and being viewed as more as nations than people. They are highly protective of the land they claim and the resources held within, and will fight off any unwanted invaders that may enter, often with weapons built into their bodies. If another mechin is found to be trustworthy, they may form an alliance, with larger alliances comprising possibly thousands of individual colonies. Alliances between mechins are technically a form of polyamorous romantic relationship, and behavior between allied mechins is usually more flirtatious than diplomatic.

The mechin reproductive process involves two or more individuals within an alliance first gathering the materials required to build the outer shell, mostly just plant matter and small bits of metal. After that, one adds a queen to the materials while the others each add a few drones. These initial organisms will give way to a generation of nerve, connective, and muscle organisms which will work together to construct a starting body for the colony-to-be. The structure of the newborn mechin is not set for life, and may be expanded and renovated in accordance with current tactical needs or fashion trends.

Mechin gender is determined by their preferred way of interacting with other mechins, and may change many times over the course of their lives. The long list of meche genders includes but is not limited to “warlord,” “diplomat,” “pacifist,” “isolationist,” and “economist.” It is generally expected that alliances will occur between mechins of the same gender, but straight relationships are not too uncommon.

The mechin homeworld, Borgam, is hotter than, drier than, and about 1.25x the size of Earth. It has five moons of varying sizes and orbits a pair of red stars. I have not yet put much thought into the resident flora and fauna of this planet, but I do know at the very least that there are a few species of eusocial centipede, which are relatives of the species that gave rise to the mechins.

That is all I can currently think to say about these things. Like all of my other assorted worldbuilding messes, I will add onto this post later if there is anything interesting I can think to expand on.

The Old Barn

The thoughts of a therian, by Tapioca

Every time I think back to my life as a barn cat, one singular memory plays in my head. I leap off the old fence, which I can never recall what exactly was the color of the thing. I bound into a grassy field, did it have hay or flowers? Only the old me knows. I pad into the even older barn, which I believe was a dull red. I can’t exactly make out what the entire scene looks like, but I can imagine what my past must’ve held.

I imagine theres a house next to the barn, where the old farmer must live in. Was it a guy? I think it was. I find myself calling him the old farmer, it seems the entire place was decades old.

I enter the barn, the interior’s layout I cannot fully recall. I wonder if there were other animals with me. Perhaps horses? Sheep? Goat? Cattle? Pigs? Chickens? Did my farmer grow crops or raise livestock? Only he and the old me know.

I wonder if there was a herding dog that worked alongside me, a coworker, a companion, a friend. If there was, I think they’d be a collie. A black border collie at that. I’m sure the herder would be the old farrmers best friend when off duty, sleeping in the mans old run down house while I settled on the hay of the barn.

I have no hard feelings for this theoretical dog, I prefer my hay bales over their dog bed. My freshly caught prey over their kibble.

I wonder what prey I caught, whatever I was put on this barn for. What population was I set to control? Mice? Of what kind? Rats? Squirrel? Chipmunks? Moles? What rodents plagued the old farms crops, or livestock?

I wonder what kind of bugs scattered across the barn walls and floors. Centipedes? Roaches? Beatles? Ladybugs? Moths? Flies? Were there spiderwebs in the corners? Did I swat at them as they tried to run by?

How many kits did I have? Did the old farmer let me keep them? Did he give them collars? Did he give them names? What was my name? I hope it wasn’t some glamorized spanish name like “Luna” or “Sol”.

Did my farmer speak english? Spanish? Japanese? French? What race was he? Was he a colored man? Or was he a white man?

Did this man have a wife? a partner? a husband? Did he have friends? Did I ever meet these possible companions of his?

I wonder if I had any companions, perhaps the barn was large enough to need two barn cats? I’d imagine there’d be an orange cat with a blue collar named something like “Sparky”. I’m sure this Sparky would be a hyper cat. We’d probably get along well.

Who even was the other cat involved with my kits? Not that it mattered, they’d never be allowed around my precious kittens anyways.

I wonder how my kits are now? They’re probably dead, I won't lie. I wonder if any of my kits had kittens? Did my bloodline continue? Is there a descendant of mine somewhere out there?

I wonder if this descendant of mine is also a barn cat? Or a street cat maybe? A softer house cat? Do they know how to hunt anymore? I hope this possible kin of mine still knows how to catch the swiftest of birds and the cleverest of mice.

I have so many questions one will never be able to answer for me. Questions only me, the old farmer, his dog, my kits and Sparky will ever know. Perhaps its better to keep it that way. To forever be left wondering on my life once was.

Even with that thought though, I still find myself longing to return to the old barn with the old fence. Wishing I can run up to the old farmer and rub my fur against his legs as he greets me with a warm smile and a gentle headrub.

I long to run alongside the herding dog as they work, hoping to cause a little bit of playful chaos.

I long to catch prey alongside Sparky, before taking the rest of the day to feed my kittens and teach them what I know.

Maybe spend some time with the livestock, just for a little bit.

But for now, i’ll rest in my human nest. I’ll eat my human food and attend my school classes. I’ll speak to my human friends and play my human video games.

I’ve accepted my humanity, i’ll admit. But that doesn’t change the ache in my heart as I long to touch the grass with my paws once more.

It's kinda weird kinning from something that used to freak you out when you first found out about it. It's also kinda weird to kin from something that most people don't know, or know as "that one cursed thing that god knows why it was created" (a very understandable reaction, when I first found out about it I thought the same way exactly).

I grew to love my source (it became a hyperfixation), but GOD is it difficult to find sourcemates, or just people who know and like my source (again, it is very understandable to why people don't like it, don't get me wrong, but it gets a little lonely sometimes/lh). I haven't posted art in ages but I finally finished a few pieces. Here's another Som Velddra piece!

WHO IS SOM VELDDRA?

The solitary daughter of the central lineage of House Velddra, Som was born to the unusual union of a human father and a Drow mother. Noteworthy for their inadherence to Lolth, the Spider Queen, the Velddra family occupied a precarious place in Dark Elven society. Their ancestral patron, Gištal, the Distortion Wyrm, also known as the Centipede, is renowned for its elusive and esoteric nature - being representative of antimatter, decay, and natural endings.

All this, and its historic enmity with Lolth. An important and damning detail that marked Som's life for turmoil before she was ever born.

Som's mother, prodigal warlock Vixzhi Velddra, attempted to hide her existence from grander Dark Elven society by residing on the surface for the first twelve years of young Som's life, eventually relocating to the Underdark due to widespread prejudicial sentiment from surface dwellers. For two years, Som continued to grow in relative peace alongside her full-blooded kin.

This was not to last.

One fateful day, a rival family of Drow attacked on bogus political pretexts. Som's mother was ripped away and imprisoned, and her human father executed before them both. Som survived only through a drastic intervention by the house patron, warping her to the surface at the young age of fourteen. For the next ten years, Som scraped by as a de facto orphan, ducking inside a hovel on the edge of a small fishing village. Rumors no doubt abounded of the strange, ill-faring young girl of abnormally pallid skin, striking red eyes and wild black hair who winced at the light of day and avoided eye contact at all times.

In time, however, she fell into step with a ragtag adventuring party of equally eccentric personalities. Through them, she found connection, belonging, friendship, and a lifelong love. They reunited her with her long-lost mother, aided her family in vengeance upon those who took her life from her, and restored House Velddra to its niche in the Underdark ecosystem.

Now, Som reigns as the standing operative of her patron's will on the Material Plane, making up for lost time with her intimidating and severe, but caring and doting mother. In the span of but a few months, she transformed from a fearful wretch ekeing out a living in the shadows to a proud, imperious and clever scion of her house. One day, she will become matriarch, but until such a time comes, she continues to indulge her arcane curiosities and investigations into the mad and macabre.
