Does anybody have advice/experience/anecdotes about starting a semi-professional blog or personal website?

I have outlines/plans mainly to share media reviews and criticism, maybe some original creative work (poetry, etc.) - and I've looked at my options. I already built a Google site but there are serious limitations there and I don't want to have to get into coding to solve them. Everyone seems to recommend wordpress but I don't know if I need all those bells and whistles.

I mainly want to: write, allow comments, keep track of analytics, and mayyyybe make a little money (but I could always redirect people to Patreon, I suppose).

I don't know why I'm turned off by wordpress. Maybe I'm just being contrarian.

Medium sites always look embarrassing to me...

I do feel kinda silly that I have a substantial audience here. I could just... start posting longer posts. But when I do, they don't seem to get much engagement, so. Plus, I definitely don't want to redirect new audiences to this blog I've been running since I was 14(?).

Part of me wants to stick with the Google site and shrug off the no comments thing - because it's so easy to use and I can easily stitch in new pages/sites as needed. (And I have plans... schemes, even...) But if wordpress really is the best option for engagement, I guess I could get over myself.

Ugh. Idk. Thoughts???

unactualized akechi goro, age 22, fully cognizant of maruki's reality and Actively Hating It Here, runs the most peaceful private detective agency in japan. the only customers he gets are people with lost pets and misplaced sentimental items.

business is slow but profitable, his life is FINE, he has the damn dog he's always wanted and a perfectly serviceable 1LDK apartment! his boyfriend is his high school crush! he has friends that like him! objectively, he has everything he could ever want!

under normal circumstances, it would be a dream come true.

however--being one of three people in this reality who hasn't been lobotomized--this of course leaves akechi bored out of his fucking skull.

(the high stakes hostage situation he's pretty sure he's in also doesn't help)

enter maruki, local overly-attached, nosy, therapist with an eldritch god in his head who is obsessed with everyone being Perfect and Happy, especially when it comes to akira's traumatized friend group, coming into said agency in increasingly bizarre disguises, complete with unhinged mysteries on par with professor layton/conan level setups in hopes of alleviating said boredom.

his logic, of course, being along the same lines as giving your inside cat environmental enrichment. he's doing the equivalent of building his poorly socialized foster kitten a catio so it doesn't attack his bare ankles from behind every corner-

akechi plays along out of cynical curiosity. hiijinks ensue.

akira proceeds to third wheel THE weirdest enemies to tumultuous one-sided parental dynamic he has ever seen unfold before his eyes while simultaneously munching on depression popcorn because his boyfriend has been stone walling him for four years straight,
