Fandom Trumps Hate 2024!

Happy September 🍂

It feels as though an eternity has passed since my last post.. I'm overjoyed to announce that after a very long search, I've finally found a place where my heart can rest and my soul can thrive. Last week we closed on a c. 1800 antique colonial lovingly preserved in idyllic mid-coast Maine amidst picturesque mountain views, forests, and wildflower fields. We even have a small, centuries-old apple orchard to explore and care for 🥹

From the moment I arrived, I knew I had discovered my sanctuary 🕯️ Antique homes have always held a special place in my soul and now I find myself living out the dream that has danced in my imagination for years.

There’s a sense of timelessness that lingers in the air.. The walls adorned with stories of days long gone. The wavy panes of the window glass, gently distorting the world beyond. The large fireplaces bearing witness to the warmth and laughter that once graced these rooms. The worn wide wood floors, aged with a beautiful patina — a testament to centuries of lives and dreams that have unfolded here.

Every crack and creak an invitation to embrace the imperfections of life.

I can't begin to express the depth of gratitude that fills my heart as I embark on this new chapter. I’m excited to share with you the beauty that surrounds me in this special place, and I’m eager to dive back into photography and the studio — to paint and create once again.

This week, we began clearing out what will soon become my art studio, housed in the barn converted workshop that was built c. 1800 and is situated just beyond a majestic weeping willow.

To those who have stuck with me throughout this journey, your support means the world to me, and I am forever grateful for your continued encouragement.

So here we are, at the beginning of a new chapter. This is my return, and I can't wait to share more with you 🤎

It’s Emilia!

I don’t really have much to say about her in regards to what her powers or wish would be in relation to her design since in my au she hasn’t made a contract (yet… ;) and talking about it here would be spoilers lol), but what I can say is that I wanted her outfit to be very reminiscent of Madoka’s magical girl form (you know, for the Homura x Madoka / Subaru x Emilia parallel) (also some Satella elements like the roses because, you know :) ). I also took note of the spin-off magical girl event in the game Lost in memories where they have magical girl designs for some of the characters, and they happened to have one for Emilia, so I took a lot of inspiration from her outfit used there. Since the majority of y’all voted for her to have the main color in her outfit be white, I went with that for her top and boots and made most everything else a different shade of purple.

A quick aside, I really want to thank all of you who voted on the poll and gave positive comments/ feedback on not just the designs that I’ve made so far but on the art that I’ve been posting here since last year. I know saying this is cliché (and even saying it’s cliché is too) but it really does mean a lot seeing so many people like my art and my ideas. I have been posting art for a while now (on Instagram but I’m pretty new here so bear with me 😂) but I have never really seen as much engagement with my stuff as I have on other platforms and I’m really happy about that :) I have a hell of a lot more to make and show you not only about this au but in general, and I am so glad all of you will be able to see it and I hope you like it to. Thank you for everything so far!

Now with the sappy shit out of the way, I’ll go over a few last thoughts I had about Emilia’s weapon and soul gem.

I didn’t know what to give her for a weapon since in canon she makes a lot of her weapons out of ice, so I just decided to give her a typical magical girl wand/staff since I thought it would fit her and it’s what she wields in the Lost in Memories spin-off. I made the staff look similar to Madoka’s bow (again, parallels) with elements of the concept art for the magical girl rings in pmmm and of Madoka’s soul gem at the bottom. The crystal star shape on top of the wand is also a Madoka reference because it’s the same star on her grief seed and Law of cycles symbol / witch kiss. I also made it crystal sort of call back to Puck’s crystal.

Now for Emilia’s soul gem I made it look like a certain key that appeared in season two… It was based on the comment by a certain someone that said something along the lines of “imagine you are the key.”… This character is very important to this au not just in the world of Lugunica… :)

Austin (as the fan) [palpably disappointed]: Oh. [Forcing themself to sound excited] Okay! I'll look it up!

Keith: This has gotta be, at this point, this person's like, "Someone has gotten plastic surgery to look like Aria Joie.

Austin: This is exactly it.

[Ali laughs]

Keith: Yeah.

Austin: The camera looks down and sees how many-- So the camera looks at their phone, or their interface, right, 'cause they're not looking at their phone. They have, like, you know, digital eyes, or whatever. Robot eyes. And they're looking at the, uh, screen. And we saw the Aria Joie account that has, like, three trillion subscribers, or whatever. But then it shows the Fouria Four-Foie account.

[All laughing]

Austin: How many subscribers do you have? [long pause as Ali thinks] 'Cause it ain't trillions!

Keith: It's--

Ali: It's not a trillion! But it's-- Is it-- [starts to say a number but quickly changes her mind]

Keith: Can I tell you my first thought was 334.

[cross-talking]

Austin: Yeah! I think it's NOT many!

Ali: 334! Okay! I was-- I was like-- What's the--

Keith: I think it can be whatever you want it to be, but that was my what's the funniest low number of followers? 334.

Ali: I didn't know if, like, 26 or, like, 300 was it. Because it's like are there only-- Is this the only people she's spoken to, like, on COUNTER/Weight so far? Or is it, presumably, somebody who googled Aria and accidentally, like, pressed on her.

Austin: No, you did not. No. You did not get the SEO at all. There's no fucking way.

Ali: There's stans, there's a reddit, you know!

[crosstalk]

Austin: There are Aria Joie RP accounts that have more followers than you!

Ali: Right.

Keith: Right.

Keith: Um. Mako is very loudly sipping on the end of... You know when you're done with a soda and you can [imitates the sound of sipping through a straw from an empty cup]. Like, this is the noise I've been making for like twelve seconds.

As Swindle comes off of hiatus, I (Artsy) would just like to say a few things.

I firstly just want to say a big personal thank you to everyone who’s been so patient during this hiatus. I’ve been dealing with a lot over the months that this comic hasn’t been updating and I’m still just keeping my head above water as it is. To those who are so empathetic, so kind, so understanding, thank you. You guys are a big reason why I continue working on this comic, and I am really excited for you to see where the story goes.

Lord knows that I’ve dedicated more than enough time complaining about the small but vocal group of people who have been rude - sometimes excessively so - to both Lolly and I as we work on this comic, and I’d like to not spend a terribly long time dwelling on it, here. I probably won’t mention if for a long while after this post. At the same time, it’s worth noting that we’ve done a lot to try to discourage and manage this behavior with... mixed results. We’ve blocked people for repeated rude behavior, we’ve banned people from our Discord server for rude behavior, we’ve closed our askbox during the hiatus, we’ve introduced an FAQ - and people have evaded being blocked by making throwaway accounts, and we’ve had an incident of an individual making a new Discord account to evade a ban, and people don’t read our FAQ. It’s all really frustrating.

I think, for now, at least, we’re going to only open our askbox to non-anons - though this won’t do too much to prevent throwaways, it’ll at least convolute the means through which people can harass us. So apologies to the shy but kind individuals who had been using anon peacefully, maybe sometime we’ll open it back up again.

Additionally, I’ll like to just once again ask for anyone who hasn’t to check out FAQ, please. It’s in our pinned post for a reason.

Somewhat related to that - mostly that it’s something that’s been covered in the FAQ, is that I’ve noticed an increasing number of people who have been saying they discovered the comic via re-uploads on tiktok and pintrest.

And. Wow. That hurts. It hurts to know, to think about. I know it’s inevitable, trust me, I know this is just the inevitable result of posting anything on the internet, but god, it sucks.

I don’t know how many of you following this blog are artists, but it’s a big long topic that I don’t really have the space or patience to lay out for all of you in this post - this is art theft. We do not allow, we say it right in our FAQ point-blank, we do not allow people to reupload the comic elsewhere. Dubs are fine, again, we’ve covered this, they’re transformative, they offer an experience unique to just reading the comic. But un-voiced reuploads that do nothing but present the comic in a slideshow? That’s stealing. It’s hurtful, and it’s wrong. Both Lolly and I have dealt many times with our work being stolen and we’ve made our stances on reuploads of our work pretty clear on our own blogs.

Please, if you see someone doing this, report them. The only “official” accounts for the comic are this blog and our promotional Instagram page, swindle.comic. If an account is uploading the comic, un-dubbed, they do no have permission to do so, and they need to be reported.

I really don’t expect this to be the last time I have to say something like this or about this, because I know that this comic is going to take a long time to complete and so we’ll always have newcomers who can’t reasonably be asked to sift through the entire blog for posts like these. But for now, I hope it helps keep the interaction with this comic more respectful. I don’t think the people who do this stuff even realize that their behavior literally makes this comic more draining to work on than it should be (which leads to more burnout and hiatuses) - or I wouldn’t be making posts like this at all, because if they did know, they therefore wouldn’t care, and telling them would be pointless. So I hope this serves as a decent reminder that we’re human beings, and we and our work deserves to be respected.

The scene before Eren had him questioning whether or not the last hour of his life had been the result of some sort of apparition his mind had conjured, or if this was truly reality. Either option wouldn’t necessarily be terrible, but he would feel particularly slighted by his subconscious if it had played a trick as cruel as this.

He watched from his bedroom door frame as Mikasa sat on his bed, none the wiser of his presence, dressed in his sweatshirt and sweats, his clothes too big for her, causing her to have to roll up the sleeves; her hair wrapped in a fluffy blue towel, a few long stray pieces too stubborn to stay tucked in; and her feet tucked into her as she tugged on the pair of socks he had left out for her. 

A smile lit across Eren’s face, feeling like it was all too good to be true—he really thought he had missed out on his opportunity. He had already cut his losses short, kicking himself internally and deeming this as something he would regret for the rest of his life. Never had he found himself so immediately transfixed on a woman before, and leave it to him to let her slip away without doing as much as asking for her number.

Eren had spent days scrolling through her Instagram, wondering what he could to contact her, but his mind drew up blank, so he concluded he’d just have to watch her from afar and hope maybe one day they’d cross paths again. He had even had Gabi teach him how to turn on someone’s post notifications, finding himself watching every little story update, his face beaming no matter how trivial they may have been—from mandatory brand posts, to pictures of her meals, and if he was particularly lucky, a picture of Mikasa. (A few he couldn’t help but screenshotting for his own personal keeping.)

He almost felt like this was a dream and he was dreading the moment he would wake up. Of all the things or people he expected to see at his front door, Mikasa wasn’t one of them. But it was the best surprise, given an insane surprise, he could’ve ever asked for.

She looked so perfectly out of place here in his home, but at the same time, she was like a missing puzzle piece Eren never knew he needed to be searching for. Mikasa was a stark contrast to the vintage decor that had been there for ages and slow and steady feel of his, with her modern day beauty and bold personality, but it made him want to keep her around all the more.

Finally done with his admiring, Eren knocked on the door frame, before walking in. “Hey, you,” he said flashing her a smile, once he reached where she sat on the bed. “I made us tea, and I’m gonna take a lucky guess and say you haven’t eaten either, huh?”

She looked up to meet his gaze, her face radiating in a way that made Eren’s heart skip a few beats. “Oh, hi—I didn’t see you,” her cheeks flushing red. “But you wouldn’t necessarily be wrong, haven’t eaten since this morning, I was… preoccupied,” she admitted guiltily.

“Running in the pouring rain… Not eating… What am I gonna do with you?” Eren said as he helped her to her feet, where Mikasa was finally able to take in his appearance, scanning him up and down before her face puffed up, almost into a pout, completely ignoring his previous sentiment.

“You changed,” she said while pointing to his sweatshirt and sweats, similar to the ones he had given her.

“You got my clothes all wet, was I just supposed to leave them on?”

Mikasa opened her mouth as if she wanted to say something, but quickly shut it, her face turning redder than it had already been. “Well—how about that tea?”

Eren eyed her quizzically, unsure of what to make out of her statement before the realization struck him. “Are you upset I changed?” He asked, his smile wide. Eren found how flustered she was at admitting her attraction to be cute—not even just for the slight confidence boost it gave him, but because she could show up on his doorstep unannounced, but not admit her attraction with her words.

“What? No,” she protested, crossing her arms.

“I think it’s very cute that you come all this way, and do these bold little things, just to get all shy on me now. You’re just full of surprises, aren’t you?”

Embarrassment seemed to be an understatement the way Mikasa’s face was flushed red and she was unable to hold eye contact with Eren. He couldn’t help but admire her and all her endearing little traits, Mikasa Ackerman was like a drug, he’d gotten his first taste and he feared he’d never be able to go without a constant fix now.

“Well you didn’t ask for my number—what was I supposed to do?”

“Like I said earlier, calling wasn’t an option?” He asked, referring to the mention of their earlier discussion of the topic.

“What if you thought I was weird or something? Or what if—” Her question interrupted by Eren’s lips pressing against hers.

This time, without the outside elements and wavering sense of fear there to interrupt them, Eren had all the time in the world to take in the moment. He walked them back towards the bed, setting Mikasa on his lap, never once breaking apart from her. With time on his side, he could enjoy the softness of her lips against his, bask in the sweetest sounds that came in the form of her light giggles in between stolen kisses, the way her skin felt underneath his fingers now that he had the chance to properly explore every inch of her skin.

Mikasa felt better than the nicotine fix he needed every so often—Eren might never need to smoke another cigarette again as long as Mikasa was in his life.

When he finally pulled away, he couldn’t hold back the grin he wore on his face. “I wouldn’t have thought you were weird, I would’ve been happy you called because I was trying to figure out how to call you myself.”

“You were?” Mikasa asked, her voice shy. She tucked her head into his shoulder, too nervous to meet his gaze.

“I would’ve been happy if you called, too, instead of walking a quarter mile in the rain, but I think I realize you’re a little too strong willed to be strayed otherwise,” he said, chuckling.

Mikasa took her out from his shoulder, furrowing her brows while she looked at him, releasing a huff, “Well if you would’ve just—”

Eren pressed another kiss to her lips, prompting her to stop talking, “I think we’ll argue about this forever, so let’s just drop it, okay?”

Mikasa rolled her eyes, but the faintest hint of a smile gave way to her lack of annoyance. “Whatever you say.”

“I think we can both agree that it wasn’t smart to run in the rain though—I can’t do all the things I wanted to do with you if you end up sick.”

Mikasa stood up, helping Eren to his feet so they could head downstairs. “I think you worry too much, I’ll be fi—” Her sentence cut off by a series of sneezes.

Eren shook his head, releasing a sigh. “What am I gonna do with you?”

Idk if I am strong enough to go on a full explanation on why my interest dropped since some chapters, this didn't start on this one, this one was just the last straw. I will just show the most obvious choices that I don't like ( my opinion btw this is just the feeling I have while reading, take this with a BIG grain of salt)

I've been reading tbhk for 4 years and I am tired of waiting for stuff the author litteraly won't do anything about and just stay in their comfort zone

No repercussions on the mcs for some choices they made, no repercussions on wounds/stuff that happened which should have need time to heal for the characters or for them to grow, giving us always the same team up so no room for real character/relationship development beside the obvious (and with how slow Hanako and Nene have been going honestly making the same characters always interact doesn't help at all apparently L O L), BIG difference of pacing for characters growth, making the story take always the same route with the same characters being kidnapped and the same ones doing the savings, putting characters in an arc they have no reason to be part of so just making them stand in the background like a caricature of themselves, making characters 'mysterious' or forgetting their character development just to use them as some sort of deus ex machina, and the worst of all:

Making Nene just a reason for Hanako to react and nothing else. No character development for her, no reason for her to be in some scenes, this is just sad to watch at this point. Aoi had this problem at the beginning of the manga for Akane mostly for comedic reason and they had growth, seeing they are putting Nene in this position after more than 100 chapters and her being the mc is just awful.

I honestly just want more diversity in the choices they are making in their writing, and the last chapter proves me that either it will come in a long time or it never will.

At least the art is pretty, and the worst part is that I KNOW AidaIro knows how use setup, they know how to write really good stuff and good characters, complex stories, and it's GOOD. So seeing this in the recent chapters just makes me even more tired x'))

Once again, my opinion, but the way Nene and Aoi are treated in the manga makes me wanna explode. AidaIro are capable of writing good female characters (thank you Mei and Sumire for being perfect from start to end), Aoi and Nene had wonderful time too, so idk why all of this is happening rn tbh. It's just sad.

Maybe the brainrot will come back, I still love the characters, but I really need to take a break from the fandom anyways (not gonna expand on this but oh boy how annoying a part of the fandom is, a lot of people are the sweetest but a part makes me wanna explode, I've been more than 3 years here and I think that the most I can take at this point)

I really really love your art, your posts on my dash always make me excited :) I’m hoping to buy Christmas gifts from your store for some bookish friends of mine (and probably get something for myself too lol). As a budding artist myself, I was wondering if you consider it worthwhile to post on Tumblr. I’ve seen mixed reviews on whether or not it’s helpful for creators to try to generate business on Tumblr and was hoping you would weigh in :) thank you, and happy holidays!

I’d say that even though Tumblr has no algorithm or features to specifically try and sell products like the other social networks, I have probably generated 60% of all my sales from here.

I’m sure that if I really wanted to, I could make more from concentrating fully on Instagram, but to be honest, it makes me anxious trying to compete for attention on there. Tumblr rewards you for posting good stuff whenever you feel like it- sometimes I’ll get a thousand notes and half a dozen sales based on a post I made a year ago that has picked up momentum again, whereas you can post something at the wrong time of day on Instagram and it will never be seen by anyone. I also don’t have the time to learn how to make professional looking videos and am not keen on putting my face all over the internet either, both of which are seemingly important for Instagram and TikTok.

I like the lack of hustle culture here too, I am not bothered at all if people like and interact with my work forever without buying anything, because I’m also just sharing my work for fun. I don’t feel like I need to grow my audience because it just kind of happens organically here.

If I had to make art my main source of income, I’d need to sell a lot more so I would then probably dive into the other apps, but I’d keep Tumblr too. Oh, the Blaze feature is actually pretty fantastic, once I worked out which of my artworks the Tumblr audience were actually interested in, it’s a very simple and quick way of advertising.

Thinking a lot of how social media affect art, how it is getting increasingly more difficult to earn money with it and honestly it just... makes me so sad?.. Disclaimer: I do not want you to pity me. I just want to share some thoughts. Some fears, maybe. Some regrets.

I know that I might never be able to make a good fortune by drawing illustrations, because it seems that I was entirely wrong with my priorities? I always wanted to do more: bigger pieces, more characters and hidden details. I wanted my art to tell a story, if possible.

Who could possible know that most of the people will move to mobile devices with small vertical screens, on which wide detailed illustrations with cinematic feel will look the worst?

Who could possible know that the algorythms of the social media would want you to draw MORE yet, somehow, draw less? I could go insane doing the same stuff over and over again: small portraits, halfbodies in the same simplistic style because they look best in instagram or on tumblr mobile app and gather more attention? And they are also faster to make, thus you can please the allmightly algorythm posting every day or two?..

I love my work, I adore doing various things, I love it when one week I work on a traditional art fullbody with a golden halo and the other three weeks - on a digital artwork with a dynamic fighting scene. But gods. How tiring is it to know that the piece you've been working on will get barely any attention, because three-weeks gap in my posting schedule will, for sure, upset the allmighty algorithm.

They say that it is always bad to switch style or a theme, because people get upset and unfollow you once they see something they aren't waiting to see. Different character body type? Unfollowing. Different facial feature? Unfollowing. Different aesthetic? Unfollowing.

Slightly different shading and coloring? Unfollowing.

But variety has key importance to me. I wish to draw characters which are drastically different from each other. I want to experiment. I want to explore. I want a drawing to be a puzzle I will be solving for hours, days, weeks, never getting bored. I do not wish my work to become a rutine to serve the algorithm or even the general public.

I see, like, those commercially succesfull artists, who post every day earning more money per week than I will be ever earning per month. It is all the same story over and over again: conventionally attractive characters. Halfbodies. Pleasant facial expressions: faint smiles, slightly raised eyebrows. Simple pose, 3/4, detailed clothing. Always the same stylistic choises. Always the same aesthetic.

Of course, sometimes they do draw stronger, bigger pieces, they experiment, they search for something new - but mostly secretely. In private. During the free time they earn - by their hard work and dedication.

I... can not afford drawing stuff for myself in my free time. Honestly, I don't have free time either than the time I spend on my trips to hometown - the only moments I could spend with my family. Neither can I draw five similar pieces in a row, because my brain starts to melt like a strawberry sundae?.. Because when I get bored, I lose concentration? Because, I made variety the key feature of my art and this turned out to be the worst decision an artist can make?

Am I just... weak? Am I stupid? Am I unworthy? Am I childish for wanting my job to be fun and entertaining and fulfilling to do?

There's this group chat I am in, and today someone, the succesful artist, said that anyone, who has less than 10K followers are, to say so, a no one? All of a sudden I feel so upset. My day is ruined. I never had 10K anywhere but VK (which is absolutely useless to anyone doing commissions). I never even cared about numbers... I never wanted to be big. Be popular. For most of the time, my biggest wish was to feel... fulfilled? To be happy, be proud of what I am doing?

I feel fulfilled. But I also don't want to starve myself to death. And I certainly feel like if I, one day, will want to have family, I wouldn't be able to make enough money to afford having a child.

Was I... entirely wrong? Did I waste my time chasing phantoms? Is it too late for me? Will I be among those, who might not survive the hard times, at least, as an artist?

buckle up, friends, because I somehow posted 98 gif sets this year and it's probably going to be 100 sets by the end of the year tbh. that number sounds so ridiculous. it's all your faults because part of the reason why I made so much was because I felt so encouraged and loved by the people I've gotten to know and know better this year, so thank you.

I started trying to put all the sets in a post and that just got overwhelming for me to look at so we're doing my top favorites with some fun statistics at the end. I think it'll come as no surprise that I mostly made rwrb and heartstopper sets this year, so I decided to do my top 5 rwrb sets, top 5 heartstopper sets, and top 10 miscellaneous sets.

top 5 rwrb sets

page to screen ripped pages: this is the first set I made after the movie was released. I worked on it for hours and really enjoy how it turned out. the text placement was what took the longest. I knew what words from each passage I wanted to highlight so it took some rearranging to make sure those were visible.

acd x all american bitch: the idea for this came about when casey posted an instagram story of GUTS and songs that correspond with their characters. I love me some bi coloring, so using that for this set was really fun!

firstprince x wildest dreams: I don't know what it is about this set that makes me love it so much. I think it's the shade of pink and then the light orange from the text.

henry "that is him, part and parcel": I adore henry and bea and that's all I have to say about this set.

firstprince x exile: I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the tags for this one and I am not sorry at all for the pain I have caused. I got the idea for this set after sending @kiwiana-writes the fake fic title "I gave so many signs" and they wrote a heartwrenching summary. I immediately wanted to do something with it!

top 5 heartstopper sets

moments of healing: day two of heartstoppercentral's pride celebration for this year. putting this together made me really emotional. I'm so grateful for alice and these moments of communication we get on the show.

imogen x ballad of a homeschooled girl: yes, I did intentionally use colors on the lesbian flag for this set. it was actually going to be purple at first to match the GUTS album but I didn't like how it looked. I tried pink, liked it, wondered what color worked with pink, and thus the color palette was born!

narlie x brighter than sunshine: day 3 of heartstoppercentral's pride celebration. as schitt's creek fans know (and as a couple people pointed out in the tags), this is the song that plays at the end of "Meet the Parents." I think I knew right away I was going to use this song for this day of the event.

narlie x fearless (taylor's version): I still can't believe I made this set. it's something just last year I would have deemed too complicated. I'm proud of myself for this one.

charlie standing up to ben: this set idea was suggested by @swiftlythebest. idk if this was intentional on alice's part, but I really enjoy how charlie says similar sentiments in both episodes. like "leave me alone" -> "I don't want to see you ever again."

top 10 miscellaneous sets

alexis rose + "destined to be on fire": I can't believe how much I've grown as a gif maker over the past three years and this set shows that growth. I also adore alexis and her journey.

david/patrick open mic: I made this set once I got back home from seeing noah in concert. I was truly close to tears during the concert when I realized I was watching him perform a song from a show I have loved for three years.

david/patrick relationship dynamic: @reasonandfaithinharmony @roseapothecary and @rmd-writes are to thank for this set coming into existence. the fact that I had so many scenes to choose from shows that this truly is david and patrick's dynamic.

schitt's creek + barbie posters: I knew right away what kind of barbie david and alexis were going to be.

GUTS + favorite lyrics: god I really love this set. the typography? the coloring? I really outdid myself.

the good witch + ages: another set I just absolutely adore. I love the shades of pink I used. also, maisie, thank you for including consecutive years in the album because it really would have bugged me if they weren't lol

danandphilgames + fuck land: my url becomes relevant again! if you told me at the start of this year that the gaming channel would be back, I would not have believed you.

calliette x love affair: I really love the overlays for this one. it just ended up working well on its own with little manipulation from me. the song is from the end of the last episode. it worked great for the antagonists event!

ellie x you're on your own, kid: I had this idea for a few weeks before I actually got around to making it. I remember being worried and surprised that no one else that I saw did a set with this song.

vampire by olivia rodrigo: the lyric "bloodsucker, fame fucker" really did something to me.

Re- Stephen Ellcock

I'm being asked about this and I don't want to start some war or gossip-fest, so I'm just going to shut it all down if it becomes that, but in the interests of not be cryptic, I will explain. I want to say upfront that I am not mad at anyone or accusing anyone of anything and I can offer supporting evidence for different scenarios so if even Mr Ellcock reads this I don't imagine he would be offended.

Stephen Ellcock is a popular social media blogger collecting images and even publishing them in a book. He's got a very loyal following and his content I feel is good.

But for many years on instagram or when I was on facebook, I would see the same images I put on this blog and casually wonder if an image had come from me directly or indirectly. Certain images seemed like they were from obscure sources and the timing seemed odd for two people to discover at the same time, but you know that happens all the time too.

Today I checked his Instagram and scrolling through it I would say 50-70% of his images have been on this blog at one time. That too is not necessarily meaningful but it's a large number.

The trouble with tumblr is that people sources images of often from the same places and even if you're careful (and I try to be) not to get tumblr images, there are many ways that scans populate and get spread around and so someone may post something of yours they got anywhere but where you might imagine it (or pinterest where attributions go to die).

Many examples of this are places like auction houses which have good scholarship and photos, collating sites like PDR review, brain pickings other social media sites as well as non functioning old blogs or sites that once did lots of scans but have disappeared. I feel this is fine, most people do not do scans and those who do usually do not scan 100% of their material, it's about curation and creating a blog that reflects your taste.

Sometimes people are imitating you. There's a very popular art blog on instagram that was 100% taking my content every single day and in order and until I joined instagram, I had no idea.

So yes, I have wondered about Ellcock and not even specifically me but just tumblr because so much of what he posts would seem to be the kind of thing you see here. I have certainly seen Nemfrog's posts everywhere, you know, these things happen.

But, certainly you can have the same taste as someone. I have definitely posted things I later found to be on other blogs that I simply wasn't aware of and some that are ubiquitous, and it makes little difference, but I did not source material from said blogs, it just happened. You know, you discover Harald Sohlberg, look around for his paintings and there are not endless number of sources so you're probably getting it where someone else did.

I inadvertently posted scans by the great 50wattsbooks and I have seen many other that did too. Now I credit them but it was because of their scans turning up in a huge number of places uncredited. And I am not surprised as they have an amazing book collection and great scans. I have seen my own scans various places but I don't think it's malicious.

So my conclusion has been that many of us find the same things probably from similar sources. It seems like big coincidence with Ellcock but then again some of those astronomy pictures are public domain things published on the web by a lot of different sites since they don't violate copyright and I am pretty sure who originally scanned them is fairly obscure even when you try to find out.

Today, I just mentioned this in passing and someone mentioned some kind of thing about deathandmysticism and Ellcock. I don't know anything about it, but it was, somewhat conspiratorially, interesting.

And if he's getting it from tumblr, thousands of others are too on facebook and insta and twitter etc, I think he's just well known and now profiting off it and it makes him a more noticeable figure.
