aside from all of the really frustrating issues with j*gulus, the ship dynamic itself i see is just inherently so ooc for both james and regulus, to the point where the fanon interpretation is not even them anymore, it’s just two random OCs. like, i think regulus is a really interesting character and i think the implication of how much his love for sirius (and kreacher) interfered with his desire for approval and conformity has a lot of potential to explore. but at the end of the day, he still was a spineless bigot (i do really like regulus as a character, but this is a fact) who idolized a bloodthirsty fascist. most of his actions are motivated by self interest. and on the other side. we have james who, despite the fanon interpretation of him, isn’t a golden retriever sunshine boy. i’d like to think that part of him was, but people tend to forget that james was also petty, vindictive, mean, and loyal to a fault. in a hypothetical scenario where james and regulus even had the potential to develop into a romantic relationship, i see a few things that would prevent it from happening: 1. one of james’ main priorities is sirius. i don’t think james would entertain the idea of pursuing something with his best friend’s estranged brother (a relationship that is clearly still very sensitive for him). 2. if sirius were to somehow be okay with it, i think the idea of anyone even on the fence regarding blood purity politics would severely put him off. like i said, he’s loyal to a fault and he’s stubborn too. even if regulus suddenly rejected blood supremacy, and even if they became civil with each other, i think james is just too stubborn to be able to completely forgive regulus’ past obsession with voldemort and would probably be unable to 100% reconcile his perception of regulus.

plus i just think their interactions would each other would be so stale and boring. sorry for the random rant, but i am just scratching my head at this LOL

nah you literally summed my thoughts on this up too. like what are they gonna talk about??? sirius?? 😭 and yes both are multi-faceted characters. i know i shit on regulus a lot on here but its mainly just because i get annoyed at the people who totally re-characterise him— his canon character interests me but only in the context of his family or himself.

we can establish that james wouldn’t get on with regulus (he absolutely wouldn’t), but i don’t even think regulus could get along with james. james is sirius’s blood traitor new brother, the one that stole him over, maybe even the one who “corrupted” him (depending on what your interpretation of regulus is and if you think he would blame james for sirius’s actions to alleviate the responsibility on sirius). how would jegulus work without the shadow of sirius? its not like hinny where harry and ginny had a deep bond and quality time outside of ron being there— they’re building from the ground up.

And the overtagging! Why is Jegulus tagged on Sirius fanart? Why are all the marauders-era characters tagged on a portrait of Lupin? Why is wolfstar tagged on literally everything?? It’s straight up impossible to find specific character related content via the tags, or any content at all if you’re trying to filter out one or more of the above. How do you manage to find the content you’re looking for?

exactly!! and it’s really a bit of a doubled edged thing for me, bc i am NOT someone who enjoys canon characterisations usually (my current tirades notwithstanding and that’s really mainly bc i hate the fanon versions even more) and honestly, i’d like shit to be tagged bc i want to look for it lmao

it’s like—imagine if all fics, regardless of how they were plotted, were just ‘golden era’ or ‘marauders era’ with NO concept of canon compliant or divergence or AU or anything. u can argue ‘meh what does it matter’ but then really, that’s a question for the entire institution of tagging then, isn’t it?

as it stands, as our ~fandom social contract~ dictates, tagging is a way for us to find what we want and avoid what we don’t. having a baseline helps operationalise that. u can say ‘okay, yeah, this is a thing and i’m CHANGING it’. it’s a scientific experiment 😌 but to straight up say?? nothing is real?? like bro take ur nihilism elsewhere pls thx

and gosh. don’t even get me start on the overtagging. literally every time one of my posts gets rb’d with wolfstar, it makes me wanna scream. i can’t see my own posts. and that’s not to mention all the others that get mistagged and i keep playing roulette w them. i honestly mostly blame tumblr’s system for this bc,,,why u including everyone’s additional tags bruh. obv someone will tag what they see. that’s what we all do. why do i have to suffer for it 😭

i also think it’s bc of like,,,those auto generated text thingys? and reader insert accs who want reach? that are fully clogging the tags. atp i just go by recs and a few trusted mutuals pages lol that’s what i’d recommend to anyone similarly frustrated 💀

Unpopular opinions:

I think people who say that Sirius would pick or save Reg over James are crazy, I’m sorry 😭

Idk how unpopular this is but Remus would drive everyone else crazy by picking the longest, most pretentious prog rock ever for parties. Peter is the only one with good taste. James is tone deaf. Sirius is a complete poser who will pretend to be into bands he’s never heard.

I don’t think Reg has a big circle of close friends. I love the Skittles in AUs but they really don’t make sense to me in canon compliant stuff, especially if the writer is trying to push that none of them were into blood supremacy.

I really like Lily and Sirius in Jegulus fics: I feel like they’re given much more depth and complexity than they are in Jily/Wolfstar stuff.

People have a really hard time making Dorlene and Moonseeker interesting as actual dynamics I would like to read about and not aesthetic Twitter threads.

If James/Remus/Regulus ended up being a thing and I was Sirius, our friendship would be over. Especially if they kept it from me. Oh, wait… I’d get with Evan and Barty and then our friendship would be over. I am toxic and petty and a Sirius kin can you tell. Any fic where Sirius is cool with it is an unrealistic fic in my eyes. Jegulus and/or Moonseeker is already stretching it but both his best friends? Nah.

Actually leaping off from that, a lot of fics these days do a bad job establishing why James and/or Remus would care about Regulus and instantly be in love with him. Especially in universes where Sirius hates Reg and Reg/Reg’s friends hate Sirius. I feel like earlier Jegulus fics did a much better job before it became an assumed dynamic.

I don’t think you should be writing Regulus & Sirius dynamics in fics if you don’t have empathy for both and aren’t willing to show both of their POVs. A lot of times it comes across as victim blaming or really weird ideas about victims.

I love lonely Reg 💀 I love the skittles as a big friend group but I sometimes miss the days where he was a lonely Emo boy or only friends with Pandora, those were the times.

Tbf I don't real jily or wolfstar so l just give a suppletive thumbs up 👍 I do love everything about Lily tho and Sirius is always good in Jegulus bc they can justify every single action he does and it feels more natural

I sort of get what you mean, I think it's become very accepted that James cares about Reg because of his large heart and he understands his abuse and manipulation but like...it's so accepted that it gets really rushed bc people just want to get to the fun bit (which like me too)

YES people who blame one of them, be it intentional or not, really annoy me bc it comes through in your writing, and I prefer Reg just as a character I write but THAT DOESN'T MEAN I BLAME SIRIUS FOR ALL THE SHIT THAT HAPPENED TO HIM it doesn't make for a cool plot point, it's just creepy. Honestly my whole page is on the treatment of the black family and dumbledore's ignorance towards it so I feel very strongly about this one, same goes for people who use Andy as a catalyst for Cissa to cry into Alice/Lucius/whoever's arms because they never treat her like an actual person
