How do you survive the CR fandom? I try to avoid most discourse, but still the misogyny is everywhere. For me the women are the highlight of the campaign, but they get so little love. And now I am just being bitter, but it seems like people are more excited about Dorian, who had like 5 minutes of fame in the beginning, and Orym having a relationship than the 90+ episodes of emotional complexity that is Imogen and Laudna. Sorry, this is a vent post..

there's definitely ways to find balance between taking a step back from the fandom but also finding likeminded people. it can take some work, but curating your following list is key and so is being liberal with the mute/block features. i'm not on stan twitter or reddit or whatever, but i do know tumblr has the best features to curate fan experience. sometimes it's as easy as finding a post with a take you really agree with and then just going through the people who liked/reblogged it.

i also think it's necessary to accept that misogyny is a sad reality of all fandom, because it's a sad reality of life, and your opinions won't change anyone's mind. i've been that person yelling into the void that people should stop ignoring, say, yasha in favour of every recurring male npc in c2 but that won't force people to pay attention to them, y'know?

there's a compromise of sorts you have to make, like if i'm going through someone's blog and there isn't a single mention of women (or it's all negative), then yeah, obviously i don't fuck with that. but i definitely follow people who love male characters that i don't really care for, but they also love the women, so you just have to use your best judgement.

sadly i think you just get used to it and do your best to make your experience comfortable. feeling bitter is definitely valid, and i think being an Enjoyer of Women in fandom is very difficult in general. it's best to just stay in your bubble, which definitely takes more work than it should to create, but as they say:

Is some of the hate for Peggy straight-up misogyny? I was back into fandom for the hate hurled at Jen Walters for having the audacity to be a smart, accomplished woman who wants to have sex and does (gasp!!!).

You almost didn't recognize the man in the mirror, and it gave you a rush.

The outfit wasn't anything spectacular, but it ticked all the right boxes. The clothes shaped your body just right, and your hair was styled just how you liked it. Now that you had moved out , you were able to dress and present just how you wanted, and it was liberating. Your friend especially was one to thank, as this party was partially a reason for you to dress how you wanted as an experiment.

Speaking of your friend, you checked the text from them, double checking the time of the party and comparing it to the time on your watch. You were early, but thought that wouldn't be an issue and saw yourself out.

Fear.

Standing at the house, fear coursed through your body. What if someone saw through you? What if someone called you out? What if this whole party was some sort of fake out? What if--

"Hey!"

Your friend's voice shook you from your thoughts as they ran up to you. You had known better than to think anything like that of them, but you couldn't help that fear that wanted to settle in.

"H-Hey!"

"So! You ready for a little fun?" Your friend nudged your arm with their elbow, their excitement on their sleeve. "Excited to be the real you?"

"W-Well..." You gently rubbed your arm wanting to let out your feelings, wanting to turn tail and hide. No one was here yet, so it's not like you'd be the center of attention, but the feelings still lingered.

Your friend was able to see the worry that radiated from you and gently put an arm around your shoulders. "Listen. If anyone gives you hell, find me, okay?"

You were always thankful for this friend. They've had your back for as long as you could remember. Feeling the fear start to fade off, you gave them a small nod. "Y-Yeah, I will."

An hour into the party finally starting, and you were a free spirit, conversing with people here and there, luckily no thanks to the alcohol going around. Thankfully there were waters and sodas about, so you helped yourself to those as you finally got comfortable.

At the moment, you had found yourself in conversation between three other men: a white haired guy with sunglasses, a guy with his black hair in a half ponytail, and a male with pink spiked hair and forearm tattoos. This group of four soon became a group of two as the guys with the black and white hair left the conversation when a woman with long brown hair pulled them aside.

"Oh, hey, never did catch your name," you noted to the remaining male, who never spoke during the group as the other two took up most of the time.

"Mm?" He had a cup to his lips, swallowing down the contents before answering. "Mm. Sukuna. You?"

You gave your name as you noted his. "So...how do you know my friend?"

"Ah, the host? I don't. I got dragged here with a few others who do know them, but why complain when there's free food and drink? The handsome company is a bonus...~"

His voice was deep and velvety, and while you weren't drinking, you wished you were so you can blame whatever heat was on your face from his voice alone. But joined in with how he looked, the compliment, and his gaze downward at you? It had you weak.

Alright, settle down. It's fine, you're fine. He's pretty hot, he thinks you're hot...shoot the shot!

You didn't have a plan if someone started to hit on you, but you didn't want to leave the party chickening out of anything, so you took a chance.

"Had I known you'd be around, I'd have brought extra ice for my drink."

...No that was stupid, definitely stupid.

But, Sukuna appeared to disagree, and he couldn't help but chuckle at your response. So...It had to have worked, right?

"Is that so?" he asked, leaning a bit closer to you. Your heart hammered by the closeness, but you didn't feel scared anymore. You felt excited.

After what felt like an eternity of silence between you, Sukuna turned his attention to something else for a moment before returning his eyes back to you.

"Hey, can I lead you somewhere?"

You almost didn't hear him, but the question still registered. As long as you didn't leave the house, you didn't mind following him.

With your consent, Sukuna took your hand and led you through the crowd of people. Both your drinks were left forgotton on different pieces of furninture as you walked. Before you realized it, Sukuna had pulled you two into a small closet, granting you some privacy.

"Still good?"

His voice was a surprise amid the darkness, your eyes slowly adjusting. Your heart continued to thwump away, both excited and nervous for what was to come. You were no dummy, though. This felt like a classic cliche party trope, and your brain and heart were all for it.

"Y-Yeah! Yeah still good."

"Heh. Good. Now, you're free to stop me at any time, okay?"

Still not being able to see, you were about to question him when his lips met yours. Throwing caution to the wind, you returned the kiss, arms wrapping around the larger male. You could feel his own arms around you, his strength making you feel weak.

Nothing more progressed from this event; it was merely a heated make out, one that currently made your mind a hazy mess. Hands touched clothes, hair. Jackets were soon discarded to the side. Grunts, groans, and moans filled the air that held muffled music. You almost wouldn't have minded if it progressed.

Until Sukuna's hand traveled up your shirt from the side, touching a forgotten piece of fabric by your chest. You felt his motions stutter for a moment, but your mind was already in flight mode.

Pulling away from the kiss, you tried to stammer out a response, but your mind wouldn't process. Instead you pushed yourself away, heading to the door. Sukuna grabbed your wrist, but without missing a beat, you shook him free, bolting from the closet, and ultimately, out from the party.

It had been a couple days since that party. You were a mental mess, but it had somewhat subsided as the time went on. Your friend tried reaching out, but you insisted you needed alone time. Really, you just wanted to forget everything that happened.

Only you wouldn't be so lucky as a knock rattled your door one night.

Opening the door, you were greeted to a familiar figure: pink spiked hair, tall, and tattoos on the forearm.

"Uh...hello," was all you could mutter.

"Hey, I'm looking for (y/n)? I was told he lived here." His voice sounded the same, even sounding a hint hopeful, though it didn't seem like he recognized you right away, given you didn't appear the same way. It was mainly the baggy clothes and posture that separated you from his memory of you.

You could send him on his way or try to explain everything. You were about to open your mouth when he continued on.

"Sorry for bothering. It's just he left his jacket at a party, and I wanted to return it." That being said, he held up the item, your very jacket that you hadn't realized you left at the party.

"I left that over there?" It left you before you could stop yourself.

Sukuna quirked a brow. "You're (y/n)?"

You hesitated for a moment. "Y-Yeah. Sorry. It's...complicated."

Extending his arm and handing the jacket over, Sukuna replied. "Don't worry. You don't have to see me again if you don't want to."

"N-No no it's not that." You took the jacket, fidgeting with it in your arms. "I mean...It wasn't you. I promise. It was me. See I...I'm kinda..." You cursed yourself, unable to find the words to explain it.

"Hey, no worries, okay?" You were surprised to hear how calm he was about this. "Whatever it is, if you don't want to talk about it or...hell, can't, then don't. It's none of my business."

His words weren't in a way that was like "I really don't care," but in a way that showed he would wait if needed, or rather if he stayed in your life. It was your decision to address, and he knew he had no right to need an explanation until you were ready.

It was the first time anyone had shown this kind of care to you, an action you were thankful for.

"Although...I wouldn't mind getting coffee with you. Down the street?"

Processing his words, you gave a delayed nod. "S-Sure! I mean, yeah, I wouldn't mind. Maybe next week? If you're not busy."

Giving you a relieved smile, he replied, "Yeah. Sounds good. I'll see you then. Noon?"

"Noon."

Marvel Trumps Hate! About me, and some auction blurb!

So as I mentioned before, I’m involved in the Marvel Trumps Hate fan auction this year and it’s looking to be a fantastic year for raising money for charity. I’m here to talk to you about my auctions, though, since I’ve learned a little more about the auction since signing up and I wanted to expand on my offers a little bit. Before I do that, though I want to thank the folks who have bid on my auctions so far and everyone in the Discord who have made me feel super welcome I really didn’t expect anyone to be interested in my stuff since I’m a bit of a fandom phantom and only briefly reappear to post the occasional thing. You’ve been amazing, and it’s a warm glowy feeling to know I’ll be able to do something to help out some great charities working on these projects for my winners.

Hi, I’m Dogsled :) I have been in one fandom or another for 25 years now, though my longest stints were in Harry Potter and Supernatural. I was very “general audience” with Marvel for the longest time, and only really started opening up to the possibility of making content for it over the last year and a half. Firmly a Stucky fan in spirit, I got hooked on Winterbaron this year and wrote Freedom Paid for in Acts of Submission back in February.

In terms of the MCU it’s easier to tell you things I haven’t watched than things I have, and basically it’s just Netflix shows that aren’t the first two seasons of Daredevil or the first season of Jessica Jones (though I am planning on working on resolving this gap). I’ve read several big Steve and Bucky story runs (Brubaker’s Winter Soldier run, Civil War I and II and Secret Empire) but haven’t dived in beyond that yet. I’m eager and willing to read any comic or watch any movie necessary to understand a story prompt. You want an AU of a specific romcom? I can do that. Need me to read Planet Hulk? Sure, no problem. Just something to keep in mind :3

So what am I doing in terms of content right now? I worked on a piece for the Coloring for a Marvelous Cause book (which I can share with you guys on the 15th!) and I’m now working on a comic and a NSFW art piece for the Winteriron Zine which will be coming to preorders soon, and I can’t wait for you guys to see the great work everyone is doing for that project because it all looking amazing. Re. writing, I have cards for Stucky Bingo, Steve Rogers Bingo, Bucky Barnes Bingo and the Winterfalcon Bingo, which have been keeping me motivated, and maybe one day I’ll get back to my long distance pining WIP which is Bucky centric with a touch of mutual unrequited Stucky love because I Like Suffering.

But none of this wall of text is actually helpful so far, right, so let’s jump into specifics:

Hi, I am a dirty multishipper. I like rarepairs. I will write threesomes and moresomes. I will write m/m, m/f or f/f without hesitation. I like the challenge of making things happen inside canon, but I also like time travel and multiverse shenanigans and have been known to eat up an AU or two.

You’re wondering if I will write or draw your ship or your character or your kink and the answer is… Very probably? I mean seriously, I don’t need much encouragement here. I’d give it a try. Obviously there are things I think I may be better at over others, but I mean if you want to outbid everyone else to throw something completely unexpected at me I’m going to take it as a challenge, not a threat. Like. If you want HYDRA!Daredevil/Cap!Bucky/Jen Walters fic I might scratch my head for a few hours over the idea  but I would find a way, that’s all I’m saying.

So. FUNNY STORY. Because this is my first auction I kinda thought if people wanted different pairings they’d send me a message and we could chat about it, but I forgot that we all are mostly very shy, so I want to clarify: these are just the ships that I have the most enthusiasm about writing! These are the pairings I motivate myself to write, but that’s really not the point of this at all. I want to write a fic FOR YOU. So tell me, what are your pairings?

Okay,  so I said I was going to make some suggestions, and I’ve already done a few already in all of that…craziness. So here are a few things I’ve thought about writing but never had the time to:

I’d love to write a Bucky/Zemo fic set in WW2 where Zemo is a POW being held in the same facility Bucky’s taken to after his fall. He helps keep him sane through the torture and watches him slip away to the brainwashing, then escapes, rescues him and nurses him back to health, helping him to remember his name

I’d love to write just about anyone adopting Bucky and taking care of him after Endgame. If that’s Stephen Strange with them both helping each other over their mutual heartbrokenness, Matt Murdock being his lawyer working with him to secure fair terms for his parole, Marc and Steven helping him learn to accept the Winter Soldier part of himself, or Clint and his wife adopting him as a mutual third partner in their marriage and buying him chickens and a cat and a goat. I just want to write people healing Bucky and Bucky healing them.

Steve/Zemo.  I want to write more of this pairing, simple as that, but I especially would love to write something set in some variety of their Secret Empire relationship where they were childhood friends. Could be an AU, could be some sort of pining where Secret Empire Zemo comes to meddle in the MCU after the end of that arc takes his friend away I haven’t thought too hard about it.

A Stucky AU where Steve becomes the Sorceror Supreme instead of a super soldier and rescues Bucky with magic.

Loki/Steve set as an alternate to canon where Loki is jealous of Thor’s relationship with Steve and abducts him (on a space adventure? Why not?) or a Loki/Bucky set in present day canon after the Disney serieses where Loki and Bucky are teaming up as good guys and discover they have a lot in common (while assassinating alternate universe versions of Kang like some mad Man On The Wall crossover?

(CW abuse) A Steve/Brock and Bucky/Brock fic which is Steve being in this borderline abusive relationship with Brock, whom he’s desperate to please, not really understanding that what he’s been asked to put up with is unacceptable, while Brock as the Winter Soldier’s handler is abusive to Bucky and tells him all about it, maybe shows him the pictures he gets Steve to send etc. Stucky happy ending and canon just deserts.

Again all of these are just ideas, and just grab bagged out of nowhere, basically. If any of that inspires you and you want to encourage me to write it, that’s awesome, but I would be JUST as excited to write your fic for you.

Just when I think I’ve gotten over something, I realize I’m still holding a grudge.  When I was new to the 9-1-1 fandom (almost 2 years ago), I started a post with a list of all the different character fanfic challenge weeks and days, mostly because I wanted to keep track of them for myself, and also because I was just really excited about them and I hadn’t seen any similar posts so I figured why not?   I wasn’t saying that *I* was the keeper of these challenges, or something, or that everyone should listen to me, I was literally just making a list on a post on my blog for me and the couple friends I had made thus far.

Someone in a big 9-1-1 blog quickly messaged me (within hours), and I was a little shocked and excited because we were just talking about fandom stuff for a bit and it was nice, I thought I was making a new friend... and then they told me that someone else (another big 9-1-1 blog) was the person who kept track of the challenges “for everyone” and that I should probably take my post down because otherwise people would get confused, and I might “cause drama” and be seen as “stepping on toes”.

Y’all, the sinking feeling of disappointment I felt... hurt, anger, confusion... and all along the actual person who was keeping track of the lists hadn’t even said anything at all, it’s like the person who messaged me was trying to moderate what I posted because my random list post was going to “create drama”.  AFAIK that person who actually posted those litsts never even knew about this, maybe even to this day.

I went along with it and pretended it didn’t bother me because I was new and I didn’t want to make waves so I took down the post I had spent several hours making. It has stuck with me ever since and made me pretty paranoid about what I post.  I actually almost left the fandom right then and there because I thought if someone is sitting there, watching posts just to tell people they shouldn’t post them, then that’s not a fandom I want to be in.  

Thankfully I saw the nice side of the fandom so I stayed, but this incident still bothers me to this day.  And the blog who intervened on the other person’s unknowing behalf is still a very big blog, still very respected and loved by the fandom, and it makes me feel like shit knowing that they once thought it necesarry to stomp on my excitement and eagerness to participate in fandom because I might “cause drama”.

I know this probably doesn’t seem like a big deal to some of you, but I was very upset for quite a while afterwards, and it obviously is still bugging me even now.  Just... who cares if someone makes a similar post to someone else?!  There’s a million different posts that contain similar information about fandom events, why was mine such a damn problem that it necessitated intervention?  It made me feel like my very presence and daring to post something similar was going to start a fandom war.  And just... yeah.  I had to get that off my chest.

How to spot a (heart wrenching sad cat) Charity Scam

So I've been get a lot of requests for money in my askbox lately, from users I have never seen before! Usually sad cats, sometimes gender affirming medical bills, a queer person being made homeless etc etc... and guess what? None of them are real! It's scammers who have learned how to work tumblr's userbase and prey on our general sense of community and charity.

Here it is, so sad! So tragic! But let's note a few things:

It's generic. They don't know me, I don't know them. it's addressed to 'friend', no use of nicknames or usernames.

Even the cat and the problem are generic 'little kitty' who has 'urgent needs'. This is not how real people talk, this is because this scam is being used over and over with different accounts a different 'cats'.

Praying (uh huh.)

Asking you to reply privately- This is so people don't spot the scam and point it out the mark and because if too many people posted replies to the same message it would beome really obvious that this is a scam. If they're looking for 'boosts' so badly, then why do they need you to reply privately?

Now that I'm suspicious, let's investigate.

Sent me an ask and then followed me! Sounds like they're just hitting up anyone and everyone, but even more likely they have a list they're working from.

(I get so many, I'm probably on a mail-out list a mile long, just being hit up for cash. Likely I fell for one of these once and got my name added to every scam list for miles, but oh well.)

So let's see if they're a bot or a real person!

The blog looks genuine enough, they've got a bio, a fandom etc. And it says they're an artist!

And of course there's that sad cat post, pinned right to the top, so I don't have to look any further through the blog for verification... Looks super legit, pics of the cat, pics of the bill... of course anyone can print out a bill and take a picture of it...

As I do scroll futher, it's full of reblogs making this look like an active user. So how can I tell it's not genuine?

Well, if they're an artist they probably post right? Doodles? Pictures? Let's have a look at their origional posts.

The fastest way to do this is by using an outside tool like Original Post Finder.

Voila! As suspected, the only post this bot account has ever made is Sad Cat Post.

Confirmed: Scam. Do not give your money to these guys, it looks so real but they're just here to make you feel like a bad person for not handing over everything you can. Charity is wonderful, supporting friends is wonderful, but tbh save it for people you actually know irl/ mutuals you have an actual relationship with. Don't believe any rando who comes knocking!

Fanfic Thieves on Youtube

A collection of youtube channels have been uploading preexisting fanfictions in videos with little to no credit to the original authors. These are not podfics, these channels copy-paste the fics into text-to-speech readers then upload the unaltered audio over static or unrelated backgrounds, either art that is also stolen or mobile game footage. In addition to not naming the authors, they alter the title to make it that much harder for readers to recognize or find the original uploads. Some go so far as to pretend they themselves are creating the fics in question. Many claim that their stealing actually helps give fics "exposure" despite the intentional steps they take to conceal the origins of the fics they profit off of. However, this practice has lead many authors to discontinue fics after the frustration of having their hard work stolen. Many of these channels claim they will remove videos upon request, but will either argue with the author in order to keep it up, or simply unlist the video for a time until they think the author isn't paying attention anymore. And their solution to receiving strikes against their channels in the past has been to further obfuscate the origins of their content instead of even considering asking first.

”I got caught stealing, so instead of not stealing anymore, I’m doubling down on stealing even more so it’s harder for people to find out and prove I’m stealing. Stealing doesn't count if the specific person I stole from didn't call me out. I am the real victim.”

That, plus the incessant tag scumming in all the videos (spamming unrelated tags in order to appear in more search results) proves to me that these are lazy attention seekers who don't want to put in creative effort when they could just leech off of the passion of others.

In order to report them, go to their channel's "About" page and click the flag icon. Said icon might be behind the three dots in the top bar on mobile. Go to "Report User" at the bottom and tick the "spam and scams" button. This will allow you to list multiple videos as offenders instead of reporting them individually. Youtube's policy states that video spam constitutes:

Massively uploading content that you scraped from other creators.

Auto-generated content that computers post without regard for quality or viewer experience.

If you recognize one of your fics among the stolen, say so in the additional comments box, and perhaps call out the channel directly in the video's comments. If you recognize someone else's fic, please let the original author know so they can report the channel as well. Many have been confronted for stealing previously and refuse to admit wrongdoing.

Most of what I've found has been My Hero Academia fics since that's my fandom and those are the ones I can recognize as stolen, but there are many other channels that steal from other fandoms, so I invite anyone and everyone to reblog this with their own findings.

The reality is that this extremely low-effort content and new youtube channels are both very easy to make, so most likely they'll start new channels once the ones on this list are run through. But hopefully, if we all work together and keep whacking these moles, perhaps we can instill that same defeatism they caused so many creators who didn't deserve it, and eventually they'll give up.

You've been reblogging more stuff about female characters getting ignored by fandoms recently and I would be really curious to hear your full views on the topic.

The thing is that... look. I get it. Many fandoms do not have very many women in their canon, many of those women are treated pretty poorly by the canon or aren't given as much depth as their male peers, and if you're at all picky the pickings are kind of slim (I would love to be a fan of c!Niki, if I were able to watch six-hour vods, which I am not). It is not wrong that most works with large fandoms are really, really sexist, and the problem is not just in the fanbase!

But come the fuck on. It is not an accident that the DSMP and the MCU and BNHA, all of which are vast-majority male and the female characters are treated terribly, are megafandoms, and Revolutionary Girl Utena is eligible for yuletide. It is not wrong that if you want to see more female-character-focused fanwork you should go to Sailor Moon and not The Untamed, but it is also kind of missing the point to say that and not look at the difference in size between those fandoms. People can say "it's because the male characters are so often more interesting and have more meaningful interactions," and like, sometimes that's even true, I will be the first to tell you that quackbur has more to it than tinarose, but please compare the Clint/Coulson tag to the Utena/Anthy tag and look me in the eye and tell me that's the only thing driving the trend. With a straight face.

And even more there's a thing where— so, I was a mod in the @ao3topshipsbracket bracket. And femslash ships, once they were in the bracket, did really well. Like, absurdly well, like 80% of the f/f ships entered got to the top 16, and the last one was against blackbonnet which was never gonna lose in round 1. You might notice something about that number, though, which is that there were only five of them entered total, because people love to vote for femslash but they absolutely will not write it. And they won't say anything about it either! I was watching the activity feed the entire tournament, and I can tell you, for all of the "let's go lesbians" that populated our notes, nobody would say anything that was actually about the specific characters who made up their ship. I learned a lot about Naruto fandom, modding that bracket; I still know nothing about CW Supergirl, because the only thing anyone would say about it is "it has women in it". Because women are interchangeable. Because women are avatars of Being A Good Feminist. Because clicking a button is easy, and actually thinking about any specific woman and her traits and her internality is hard.

The thing is that guilt over misogyny does not actually fix misogyny. It gets you a lot of people who vote for women in polls, and who say "he's like a woman to me" about their male faves but notably don't have any canonically female characters they talk about, and who say that the only thing they care about in a fic is if it has women in it but will not ever actually say anything about any specific woman, and who never shut up about yuri but apparently yuri is everything and anything except women who have feelings about one another.

I'm tired! I'm very tired. I want people to actually give a shit about specific women and their specific traits, which do not begin and end with "woman". And, also, to stop treating women exclusively as the wingmen, advice-givers, mom figures, and accessories of men.

Some time ago I created a forum that didn't stay lively for very long, unfortunately, but I don't want to give up on it as I think forums offer something that no other tool for online community can offer: an actual community that doesn't rely on everyone acting like their own PR/marketing team.

So here it is, in case anyone's interested:

What does it have to offer?

A place to meet artists and roleplayers from the FFXIV fandom, where you won't be assailed by notifications like a Discord server, that's LGBTQ-friendly and won't ask you to post all the time to remain visible (contrary to social media).

What you'll find:

RP sections for your RP threads, easier to manage than on Tumblr, and without the pressure of being seen online on Discord because you wanted to talk to your friends but aren't in the mood for RP

A place to get help to create your character or write an NPC, if you're feeling insecure and want to try your hand at writing/roleplaying

Galleries for your writing, fanarts, screenshots, irl craft, etc. where you don't have to worry about peak hours to be seen

Forums where you can gush about your own characters and get asked questions: no need to have a big following anymore!

A place where you can discuss the lore and share your meta analysis to your heart content

A place to organize your own in-game event and promote it, once again without needing to build a big enough following for it to be noticed!

Yes, there's a NSFW section (that you have to ask to get access to). Forumactif—the host—is not in favor of this, however, so if Etheirys has enough success I might consider hosting it myself (but I'm not rich so we'll start with the free alternative for now and just keep it on the low XD)

Dead Dove, Content Entitlement, and Fandoms

There's been no end of posts clogging up popular fandom tags with arguments and opinions on dark content, dead dove, and related things. While I've seen some decent posts that go over media literacy and dark content, I personally feel like none fully encompass my entire feelings on this nor provide all the points that I feel are important.

I know people have strong feelings on this subject, and I'm not expecting to immediately change anyone's minds. But I hope maybe I can toss some food for thought out there, or provide further context from both a victim of SA as well as a content creator. This has been bothering me for a while now to the point where it has been making me no longer want to write or engage in fandoms on Tumblr, and so I needed to get this out there with my stance. I've also had people in my inbox stating that my dark content is somehow morally better than other writer's dark content. TW: Mentions of dark content including discussions of noncon/dubcon, harassment, SA, etc.

If you write or consume [INSERT CONTENT], you're romanticizing and endorsing it and that makes you a bad person. Or, you're weird/wrong/gross for it. I see this brought up primarily with dubcon/noncon topics. It should go without saying, but fiction is fantasy, it's separate from real life. Adults who consume this type of content understand that these things are NOT ok in real life. But to take it a step further, I want to stress that having noncon fantasies is actually INCREDIBLY common. In studies regarding these fantasies, nearly 50% or more of people who participated admitted to having fantasies that align with these topics the majority of which are women. Not only that but these kinds of fantasies are even more common in people who have been victims of these crimes. This isn't some niche thing only liked by a minority of people. If you don't believe me here's an example of ONE study, but there's plenty of easily accessible information out there. By conflating consuming/writing this content with someone's moral character stigmatizes these feelings further and does more harm than good. And I know what you're thinking though. But why? Why would someone who's gone through something like that fantasize about something so awful? Why is this appealing to anyone, victims or not? Fiction creates a safe space to explore topics. In fiction there are no real victims, no one is actually getting hurt, it's all fake. The characters aren't real and if at any point as the reader you are too uncomfortable to continue, you can stop and exit. You can like the idea of a fictional person tossing you around, while also feeling uncomfortable if a real life man tried to pick you up a the bar or didn't take no for an answer. There's also "normal" things you can fantasize about, but not want to participate in IRL.

Hypocrisy and what is considered dark content? This won't apply to everyone, but I've seen a number of people who claim to be anti-dark content but reblog things that are non consensual, perhaps without realizing it. And this is especially true for those who are younger on here. Please understand that noncon/dubcon does not inherently need to be violent or gory. Any situation in which there's a lack of consent or a power imbalance is inappropriate. Somno fics? If it's not explicitly stated that it was agreed upon prior in the fic, that is still non consensual even if it's written to be "sweet.", even if it's a pre-established relationship. Professor x student fics? There's power imbalance there. There's a reason you cannot have a relationship with your teachers in real life. Hybrid fics? Most people write hybrids as completely sentient people who are treated as sex slaves. They have little choice or are "following instinct." You cannot consent to someone who literally OWNS you after adopting you. You get the gist. There's far more to consent than physically manhandling someone. Yet because these things are written in a way that contextualizes them as being "sweet" and "normal", they aren't considered dark content by many people. If you're ok with the above, you have to understand that these ARE forms of dubcon/noncon. I would even argue that these are more romanticizing of these topics than stuff that's far more explicit in nature. If you would be pissed if your IRL partner tried to feel you up in your sleep, but enjoy somno fics, or enjoy the Taboo of Professor Leon, but wouldn't fuck your actual college professor - then that is the EXACT way in which people who enjoy even "darker" content can enjoy the fiction whilst not partaking in real life.

It sets a bad example for younger people on the website/"protect the children." Children shouldn't be looking at smut in general, dark content, vanilla content, etc. I don't know what else to tell you. It is NOT the job of content creators to try and police what teenagers do on the internet, that's between them and their parents. The majority of creators who make 18+ content explicitly state MDNI and block those younger than 18 if we discover them trying to interact with us. That is the most that we can and should be expected to do.

[INSERT CHARACTER] would NEVER act like that, it irritates me when people write them as OOC. Fanfiction is by definition NON canon. The only people who truly know how a character is supposed to act are the people who created those characters. But I want to add on to this, there are plenty of times in which a character acts entirely OOC even in fluffy or vanilla fanfiction. Every writer is going to have a different interpretation of how a character acts or thinks - and yet it's only really complained about when it's dark content. These characters are not real. Leon cannot be upset or hurt by people writing dark content about him, because he doesn't exist. Part of the fun of fanfiction, at least in my opinion as well, is justifying certain things within the context. Many dark content writers will and do explain why the character became how they are or why they think that way using canon as context - not that I think it's required because fanfiction can be whatever you want it to. The point is, dark content or not, not everyone will be on the same wavelength as you about your favorite character.

Even if you're a victim of SA or other crimes, you should get professional help, not read dark content. This is a very bad take in my opinion. Mental health care can be incredibly hard to get. Reading fanfiction is free, it's harmless. But genuinely, imagine you're a victim of a heinous crime, and you're already struggling with feelings regarding it - to then be mobbed by people online telling you that you're weird and wrong for having the feelings that you do? This is also in league with my first point, but having these feelings are actually VERY normal. This is a healthy way to process the emotions in a safe environment where no real person gets hurt, where you can leave whenever you want. Stigmatizing these things does hurt real people though.

You're hurting other people who're victims of these things. Look, if a fic is not properly TW then I fully understand. Every victim will have a different experience, and while some may be ok with dark content, others won't. So if you open a fic expecting it to be one thing and it's another, that's shitty. But tags are there for a reason. If you see something marked Noncon, and that's triggering for you, no one is expecting you to read it. And here's the thing with tags/tw's as well, everyone's trauma is different. Something that one person might not consider dark content, or is generally considered innocuous might trigger someone else. If you are one of those people who think even seeing the trigger warning could be harmful to people, then that's a prime example of WHY you must curate your own experience online. Block certain words, tags, and phrases to make sure you don't see them. But that's on YOU to do, not people who create content. Their only responsibility is to warn you about the contents of the content they've made, their responsibility stops beyond that point. You know what DOES affect real people besides the stigmatization of their feelings or kinks? Harassing them. Leaving hate comments, telling people to unalive themselves. These affect the mental health of the real people behind the content that you don't like. I've seen death and rape threats SENT to dark content writers.

Dark content in other forms of media. It's interesting to me that the majority of discussion around dark content comes from people criticizing fanfiction specifically. Take horror movies for example. The Saw Franchise, we'll say. Do you think the creators of that series want to enact those horrible things onto other people? Do you think they want to be the victims of Jigsaw themselves? What about people who watch content like that? You probably don't think that they do. There's TONS of movies, music videos, even horror novels that have incredibly, and I mean INCREDIBLY dark dead dove content - and yet most people understand that the appeal is in the taboo. That it's fiction. That people who consume THOSE forms of media don't want to participate in those things but do enjoy consuming that content. But when it's fanfiction it somehow becomes a problem.

Entitlement and demand of fandom content. In addition to all of the above, there is a major uptick in people complaining about the content within fandoms some not even relating to dark content. "There's too many stories where reader acts like X." "I hate how so many people characterize this person because that's now how they would act!" "Why is there so much smut? Why can't there be more of {insert what I want}". This is FREE content made by people who do this stuff as a hobby. No one owes you content, and no one HAS to write the way you want them too. If there's tons of content like that, then it's because it's popular. Perhaps your version of a character is in the minority opinion, and that's completely ok!

What's the solution to all of this discourse?

Be the change you want to see! If you feel like there's too many x reader fics where the reader doesn't act how you want - then write it the way you want. Do you have head canons about a series or character that you haven't seen discussed before? Make that post yourself! If you don't feel there's enough fluff in the fandom - then create some! And if you don't want to make content yourself - request it, commission it. Interact with your favorite writers! Encourage them, don't demand. Talk with them about their work, leave comments, and reblog, reblog, reblog!! Being a part of the discussion and interaction is the BEST way to help the community thrive. Surround yourself with the content that YOU want, curate YOUR experience. Block every dark content writer you see if it helps. Go into your Tumblr settings, block words, block tags. Don't set yourself up to be upset or bothered by the content you're getting. Even if you read the above and you still think every dark content writer is a horrendous, awful person - the best thing to do is still block them. Block their content. Harassing them and complaining on it will NOT stop that content from existing. But you will continue to upset yourself by not curating your own experience.

As someone who accidentally achieved BNF status in two separate fandoms, I'll let you in on the secret cheat code (but beware being a bnf comes with a price and you won't know what it is until it's much too late)

It's commenting. And I don't just mean on the juggernaut fics or ships. Both times I came into a fandom in the first two years of their run. There were already a decent number of fics, lots of kudos (or favorites on ffn) but rare comments. Even the most popular fics, the ones ending up on rec lists, would have maybe 2-3 comments total.

I came from a fandom with a culture of commenting and I brought it with me. If I read a fic, it got a comment. Before anyone starts whinging nonsense about diluting the value of a comment, there is almost always something positive that you can find to comment on. I think back to my earliest writings and the way the elders and bnfs of my fandom encouraged my writing when I know from looking back on it, it wasn't great. But they found the seedlings of my strengths and they nurtured them through commenting. Encouraged the things that worked well in my stories, and yet somehow, rarely if ever offered concrite.

Everything I read gets a comment.

At the very least, the idea was creative enough for me to click into the story. Often there was a line or even a word choice that stuck with me and I would comment on. (and if six different people comment on how they liked "this bit" but no one comments on "that part" the authors are going to start realizing what worked and what didn't without anyone getting their feelings hurt)

After a few weeks, I was known for my comments. I had people replying to my comments about how excited they were: "yes! it's you! I got one!". And when I published my first work in the fandom, it seemed like everyone who had ever received a comment from me showed up to leave one for me.

I didn't set out to become a BNF. That was an unfortunate side effect and one I said I wouldn't repeat a few years later in my new fandom. (I did)

Turns out the fastest way to make friends is to hype their work. Reblog their work on tumblr and give a little non-spoilery shout out. Reply to reblogs and start conversations in the posts or in the tags.

A fandom lives and dies not only by the creative works made by the fans, but also by the response to that work.
