I've always wanted to learn bookbinding, ever since I was a wee little nerd, but there are a lot of things I've always wanted to learn, and this one has both a daunting upfront materials cost and a daunting upfront research cost. however, my sister is a jewel among siblings and gave me for christmas last year a handy dandy bookbinding manual, a block of good paper, and a little bag of tools.

but I still didn't have a suitable workspace, nor any of the many important tools and materials that she didn't include in her gift. so I just read the manual and pined. until maybe a month ago I got fed up with pining, flattened a cardboard box for a cutting mat, and went to town.

and I'm real proud of myself, so here's me rambling, plus photos!

I went to the thrift store and got glue + some fabric to bind the cover, went to Michaels for a paintbrush (and later went back for a metal ruler lmao it's amazing how useful it is to have a straightedge for cutting the paper), and...could not find material for the cover boards. so I went home and pined some more. but the urges were too strong, so after a couple hours of moping I got a stack of printer paper at the grocery store (I could not bring myself to use the good paper for my first, inevitably weak attempts, I just couldn't do it) and started making a little booklet. which was a great idea, it turned out, since it makes for good practice with cutting the paper, measuring things, punching holes in the signatures, etc.

I have a big box of greeting cards from Michaels, which I used for the covers. it didn't feel like I was making a Real Book, so I got some colored paper from the stationery store and used that for end papers.

so fancy~

galvanized by this success, I ordered a stack of chipboard online to use for cover boards; and once I was confident that I could cut paper without making it look too stupid (getting that straightedge ruler sure helped lol), I made signatures out of the good paper, left them under some heavy books overnight since I don't have a book press, and then punched holes in them! (huzzah for this nice video on getting the holes right)

my sister's gift included good linen thread. it's unwaxed, but after some poking around on r/bookbinding it looks like that just means I'll have to be more careful to avoid tangles and keep good tension. I am fine with this. I can be extra attentive. (I considered just running it over a beeswax candle, but one commenter said if your wax has paraffin in it, it could melt in a hot car, ruining the spine. I can't guarantee my candle is 100% beeswax, I didn't make it, so maybe we just move on.)

I don't have good linen fabric to use for the tapes, but the important part there is that the fabric be thin, sturdy, and not stretchy. the probably-cotton I got from the thrift store fits the bill, so it'll do!

this is a french link stitch, which I got from this exceedingly good tutorial. apparently it's strong enough on its own that for a book of this size, I don't actually need tapes, but I'd already cut the things so eh here we are. and tapes plus french link will make it a stronger binding still (according to a friendly redditor on r/bookbinding), so we carry on.

specifically we carry on to the gluing step. now as I mentioned, I do not have a book press, and you....kinda need one for this step. you need to hold the book block in place with the signatures facing upwards, pressed together hard enough that the glue won't run down between them and stick the pages together (though you do want the glue to get between them just a little, just for like a 16th of an inch). you at least need some clamps and a couple boards to sandwich the book block with.

but you know what? I'm not a professional, this is my first ever book, if it's a little bit off it'll be fine. so we grab all the heaviest books off the bookshelf and improvise.

it's fine! I'm sure it's fine! and just in case it's not, I've tucked a bit of cardboard underneath to catch any glue that drips down so it won't land on the floor. see? I'm prepared! I'm acing this.

and actually, it really was fine. I used clear elmer's glue, applied with a flat paintbrush from the art supplies aisle at Michael's, and frankly I liked the way the flat paintbrush let me slip glue in between the signatures. I did poke around on a couple bookbinding sites to see what kind of glue I should use, and the gist is that although there are better options than this, elmer's glue is perfectly serviceable, and the main downside is it's not archival grade. but I don't need my first bookbinding attempts to last 200 years, that's fine.

the next step is to add the mull. mull is a specific type of fabric �� extremely loose-weave linen – and the idea is to paste it down over the spine to essentially hold the tapes and signatures all in place in relation to each other.

but I don't have mull! so I'm using more of the thrift store probably-cotton, because it's thin enough and not really stretchy at all. I'm sure this will be fine too. I painted a layer of glue onto the spine, then left it to dry a bit while I measured and cut the fabric, then painted a generous stripe of glue down the center, where it'll affix onto the spine. then I added a bit more glue to the spine, just to be sure, and pressed the mull into place, rubbing it thoroughly to make sure it's firmly affixed to every signature, with no creases in the fabric or air bubbles beneath it.

honestly I might have overdone it on the glue. I've never done this before, I don't know! I think it's okay, though – I tried not to ever let it become a thick layer, just a slight coating, since the danger of too much glue is that it might crack once dry and weaken the spine.

and now we leave it in the press overnight to dry, and pick up the next step in the morning!

I like Brennan Lee Mulligan. He seems like a nice, funny guy. And while you should always be wary about celebrities you don't know, for now I believe that he's genuine in how he portrays himself in front of the camera. I also know that humans are complex, and can contradict themselves in their behavior.

Which brings me to a bit BLeeM did a while ago on Make Some Noise. You might have even seen it on TikTok or YT Shorts or something. It's the "Wennan Wee Wulligan" one. Basically, Brennan acts out what he thinks his evil/opposite doppelgänger would be like. And he starts off by saying:

"I hate Dungeons & Dragons. My favorite [...] game is investing in multinational corporations."

It's an obvious way to go. Being a D&D nerd and a staunch anticapitalist are big parts of Brennan's image. But seeing those two things right next to each other, plus remembering what Brennan said about why he stays with D&D over other games, it feels... like, I can't help but see him as a bit hypocritical here.

Like... multinational corporations are bad? Big capitalists are evil? Monopolies suck? I assume Brennan would say yes to all of these. But what would he say if I followed this up with "Then what about Hasbro, Wizards of the Coast, and Dungeons & Dragons?"

Like, shouldn't a guy who's so big and influential in the TTRPG sphere while also claiming to be against big corporations do whatever he can to promote smaller, independent creators and their creations? Instead of going to bat for the biggest name in the game?

I can only remember two games that Brennan GM'd for that weren't D&D. And both were proprietary systems made exclusively to be performed for comedy, instead of "actual" indie games that one could purchase to support an independent creator.

I dunno, it just makes the whole "I hate multinational corporations" thing ring hollow a little.

But aside from that meta, I love Kokichi honestly! Fun fact--I was predispositioned to actually hate Kokichi due to how I interact with the DR franchise.

So a little story for you all: When I was a wee bab and Dr1 came out, I went in blind and got attacked to Leon almost immediately. So not only did I get attached to a character who died early, but I got attached to a character with one of the most brutal, realistic executions in all of DR's history. You see, this was very traumatizing for a wee bab Rye! So I started looking up the victims and executions of characters from that point forward to know who's gonna die so I don't get so overly attached to them and get soul crushed by their deaths.

For V3 Specifically, I don't remember how I got onto doing it, but I went and looked up the Japanese version of the final argument as well--the comic minigame where you summarize the case? And I saw Kokichi doing a little fist bump when Miu died and went "Oh no you're like Nagito 2.0 aren't you?"

Needless to say, I was ready to hate him. Very ready.

And yet... I did not. Chapters 1-3, I noticed that he wasn't actively malicious or trying to cause trouble for the class at all--not in the same way Nagito did. I thought maybe his mischievous nature was portrayed a bit cruel at times, but more in a "that was a bit tack-less there buddy" than a "Wow yikes you're an asshole" kind of way.

So here I was, waiting for Kokichi to be the kind of character to get himself involved with a murder somehow, and be "happy" about it... and never really seeing that kind of character.

When we got to case 4, I knew that was the case where Kokichi would "show his real colors"--that maybe it was just a case of bad foreshadowing and writing, that Kokichi was going to do a face-heel turn... and he did, kind of, but in the most tragic of ways.

His behavioral changes, the way he went silent when Kaito punched him and called him out on his weird behavior, and the way Kokichi was manipulating Shuichi for the investigation away from Gonta, and then the comment where he said that the class losing might be okay because the Killing Game would end if they were all executed... and in my mind, I saw someone completely broken. Then he got so viciously angry at Gonta during the trial, in a way that read as intensely hurt and lashing out, and then the sheer utter carnage of his emotions at the end of the trial too, where he cried and begged to be executed with Gonta... I just didn't see what I expected to see. I didn't see a malicious evil little monster.

I saw a child with too much grief on his shoulders.

After I finished watching NicoB's LP of the game, I started rewatching V3's story to get a better feel for the characters and the plot, because I wasn't entirely sure how to feel about everything... and the more I looked, the more I saw Kokichi's nature as a kind-hearted, mischievous person who was just as broken by that terrible situation as anyone else.

I think he is a very complex character, a very human character--one that's smart but not the typical "insanely" smart DR fans are used to, one that teases people and gets a kick out of being chased, one who wants to be be remembered... and overall, someone who was driven to murder only via a mercy kill.

I think there's something special about a character like Kokichi that's hard to replicate--and who knows. Maybe if I hadn't been expecting Nagito Levels of Bad, I would have been more hurt and betrayed by Kokichi in chapter 4. Maybe I wouldn't have.

Either way--I love him now, and I think he deserves more credit than what was given to him.

It was a habit of yours to sneak your special gummies with you during hauls. Being stuck in space in a raggedy spaceship in a room that offered little to no comfort? Yeah, you felt like you needed a little something to take the edge off.

Management was hell bent on ensuring that no one brought too many personal items on board, there were very few things they allowed out of the 'kindness' of their hearts. A small amount of snacks were one of them. Luckily for you they didn't pry too much about the slight difference in the packaging of your nerd ropes, simply brushing it off and ushering you to move on.

Most hauls you had the room to yourself, so at night when it was lights out you would eat your sweet treat and have a really good nights sleep (after getting a bag of chips or two from the vending machine to cure the munchies that followed of course.)

This haul was different, You were sharing a room with the new intern. Daisuke wasn't that much older than you, older by a couple months if that. Why he couldn't bunk with his mentor you had no idea. No worries, you didn't let this change your routine. If Daisuke asked you about it (which he did eventually) you would just lie and say it was your last piece and you couldn't share.

This backfired horribly. How you ask? Well, two things.

Daisuke had a HUGE sweet tooth.

In an attempt to curb his cravings he had rummaged through your bag to find your stash.

He was currently curled up in a ball on the floor staring blankly ahead, eyes wide. Around him sat two empty wrappers of some of your candy that you insisted you didn't have more of.

Panic set in instantly and you rushed to his side swearing under you breath. "Oh shit- Dude are you okay? can you hear me?" Daisuke gave a weak nod from his spot on the floor. You sighed with relief, thankful you wouldn't have to get Anya, or worse Curly, Involved.

"What the hell happened?" you questioned, picking up the wrappers and helping him sit upright. He turned to look at you, the whites of his eyes already starting to turn a reddish color. "Everything," He pauses and turns one of his hands over. Examining it as if it was magic or something. "Everything looks so.. warped." he mumbled out, mild anxiety laced in his words.

You rubbed circles on his back and sighed. You wanted to be mad at him for snooping and eating your candy, You really did but in his current state it wouldn't do him any good.

"Yeah man, that's what happens when you take edibles." Upon hearing the word 'edible' it sets him off. The anxiety he was feeling boiling over into panic.

"Edible as in weed? I ate weed?!" his breathing picks up as he curls into himself again. Rattling on incoherently about how he feels like he's going at warp speed, and wondering if it's possible to overdose on THC.

You take a peek at the wrappers to get an idea of just how much he ate. Doing some quick math in your head you realize that he ate about 30 milligrams. Way too much for a first timer, assuming that this was Daisuke's first time. You hear him sniffle beside you and realize that he's crying. shit shit shit.

"Woah hey hey, you're ok!" you say quickly, gently petting his hair. Stray tears are sliding down his cheeks. "I don't like this." he mumbles in a shaky voice. You're the one panicking now, you've never dealt with a situation like this. At least on your own.

Biting the inside of your cheek you do a quick scope of your shared space, desperate to find anything to calm him down. You spot an unopened water bottle and get up to grab it, handing it to Daisuke.

"Sip on this, I'll go grab you something from the vending machine okay?"

He nods silently and takes sips from the water like you instructed.

Quietly you rush to the vending machine, punching in combinations rapidly to get some small bags of chips and crackers, and some extra bottles of water to be on the safe side.

When you return to the room you see that he's doing better. "I just realized something." he says giggling to himself. You walk over and sit down beside him, placing your haul on the floor in front of you. "Oh yeah? what's that?"

He gestures over to one of the company posters on the wall that had the mascot on it. "His name is Polle because he's a pony." He smiles, proud of his observation.

You purse your lips and nod. "That-You know what yeah, that does make sense." You hand one of the bags of chips to him. "I didn't know what you wanted to I just grabbed random flavors."

He takes the chips eagerly and thanks you. He takes a handful and shoves it in his mouth as if he hasn't eaten in weeks. In between mouthfuls he continues talking about random things, some of which don't make sense at all but you just nod silently.

After finishing the bag he and crumples it up, tossing it into the trash can in the corner of the room. "So like," he begins. "You never get funny after you eat these." he says pulling another one of your candies from his pocket. "It's because I've built a tolerance to them," you say and take the candy from him. "if you eat too much it can make you feel like you're dying."

"Yeah-sorry about that by the way." He pulls 3 more candies from his pocket and places them in your palm. "Dude, how many of mine did you steal?!" you ask, utterly dumbfounded. He snickers and throws his hands up in mock defense. "Only those, I promise!"

You snort at his actions and tuck the candies in your own pocket. "You're not gonna touch 'em again after this, huh?" He shrugs. "I don't hate it now honestly," he leans back against the bed. "If i wanna do this again I'll ask you first."

"Maybe, or I can help you steal the code scanner so you can get some sweetener packets." You suggest. While he was calmer now you really didn't want to go through this whole ordeal again.

"Can't we do both?" he says, offering you a pack of crackers. "I'm sure it'll be fun if we both do it."

You take the crackers with a suppressed grin. Getting high with him could be fun, and besides getting caught stealing snacks late at night was could the real harm be?

"..I'll think about it."

How I feel about this character

Aw man, he's just the ultimate wee DUDE, isn't he? He's the most relatable self-insert character of all time. If I was dragged off on a quest, I, too, would be constantly bitching about the cold and the hunger and the sheer bloody inconvenience of it all. But at the same time, he's such a bloody wee hero: resourceful and cunning and funny. And he gets to grow into such an eccentric old shit, too. XD But he's still such a good soul, even then. I love that bit during the Council of Elrond when he volunteers to take the Ring to Mordor himself. He's just the best. <3

All the people I ship romantically with this character

No one in the books, but in terms of the films, my favourite ship is Bilbo/Bofur. Their relationship is just the cutest thing, and they get some really lovely scenes. I'm also partial to Bagginshield, when the stars are properly aligned.

My unpopular opinion about this character

Following on from the last one, I don't think that his song of Eärendil is the big faux pas that fandom tends to treat it as. Eärendil is one of the big heroes of the Elder Days, his star is beloved as a symbol of hope, and Elrond has no problem talking about his parents. It's not like it's a taboo subject or anything. In fact, I'd hazard a guess that of all the poems and songs that have probably been written about Eärendil and Elwing over the millennia, Elrond would probably be most fond of the one written by his friend (with input from his foster-son).

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

Oh, I don't know. I think he gets a pretty complete and satisfying story as it is. I do hope he continues making up songs and writing histories after he gets to Valinor. I can see him interviewing all the Valar in turn. I reckon they'd love him. :)

How I Would Spend a Day with Characters from the Witcher

Hello wandering traveller! I did this with the Hobbit characters, so I thought why not have a stab at it with the Witcher characters. Not all of them are here, just the ones I like. So, if there are any you want me to do that I haven't done, I can do a part 2.

Geralt - If were are going with being in the Continent, I would want him to teach me basic Witcher training and signs. Also, trying to get him to talk about his experiences fighting monsters he's killed or un-cursed, although it might be easier having that conversation with Vesemir. If were were in this world, I defo would want to take him to a museum, especially if it is heavily archaeological or weapon based (not me nerding out on swords at all haha).

Ciri - This girl needs a damn break from running away from people for 5 years. Girls' day in: making an unhealthy amount of biscuits and cakes, getting take out and having a movie marathon or creating silly PowerPoint presentations and showing them to each other. I know that Freya Allen (who plays Ciri) is amazing at art, so I would be a cool headcannon that Ciri is also good at art, so we could have fun drawing competitions for our girls' day in.

Jaskier/Dandelion - He can write lyrics and I can write stories (decent enough haha). I think what would be cool is having a chill day, perhaps by a river bank underneath a large willow tree with a picnic (defo not a date (>ᴗ•)). He would write a song, and I would make a story out of it, and I would make a short story that he can turn into a ballad. I think that would be quite cool.

Yennefer - As much as I love her I would be a bit scared to be around her, and not sure how to act just in case he turns me into something unnatural. But, if we were good friends, I think a wee shopping spree would be nice, and pick out outfits for each other. A bit like that challenge where someone has their eyes closed and is told to stop randomly as a piece of clothing which they will have to wear.

Regis - I will always say this when Regis comes up in any conversation (whether he is related to it or not) he is my favourite character in the books by far. I would most likely start geeking out about vampires to him, and all the different ones we have in this world compared to the continent. I would likely make myself look like a tryhard idiot, but I think Regis would be interest in it. We probably would have an indepth conversation about higher vampires, and their culture.

Triss - I don't know why, but whenever I think of Triss I think of bunnies, so I mostly likely take her on a girls' day out to a sanctuary with a variety of rescue animals (bunnies are a must though haha). I feel like she would not be keen on zoos that much, even if they are to help protect endangered animals - though I think she would like seeing the different animals our world has.

Vesemir - As I mentioned, it would be easier to ask him about his experiences being a Witcher than towards Geralt. Again, if I was in the Continent I would be eager to help him make elixirs and learn the basics in the alchemy of oils and poisons. If in this world, I would get this man down to a tea room and have a good old cuppa... that man is old and needs his rest with tea and scones.

Funtime Freddy: Fully embraces the concept of bear hugging, might crush you accidentally lmao, and has a hard time knowing when to let go. Other than that, very solid hugs, will pick you up off the floor into an all encompassing embrace while laughing in delight (7/10)

BonBon: Likes to give hugs, hard for him though because he's only like, a foot tall (short king) and attached to Freddy most of the time. But he does his best! (8/10)

Funtime Foxy: Actually pretty touch averse, much prefers to interact with others from the stage, but if you're upset and want a hug, they'll do their best. An awkward and probably short hug, but a well-intentioned one. (4/10)

Circus Baby: Will probably not realize you want a hug at first (too busy scheming lmao), but she'll give you one! Like Freddy, very solid, just straight up picks you off the floor and holds you tight. A bit odd, but comforting. (6/10)

Ballora: She keeps her eyes closed 99% of the time, so she might accidentally bump into you as she reaches out for you, but otherwise a pretty good hugger. Gentle, but firm enough that you feel comforted. (8/10)

Funtime Chica: Cross between a motherly hug and an excitable one; will pick you up and squeeze you tight, but not so tight that you're at risk of being crushed. Might forget to end the hug and start talking though, just kind of carries you around. Congrats, you're now her emotional support human 👍 get lovingly kidnapped nerd (7/10)

Happy Frog: Honestly a fantastic hugger. Very solid, loves hugs tbh. Whether you need a comfort hug, a shoulder to cry on, a congratulations hug, or you're a hugger yourself, she's got you (10/10)

Mr. Hippo: Won't initiate, he's more a talker than a touchy person, but will happily give you a hug if asked. Gentle, very safe. He will absolutely take it as permission to start telling you stories, though (9/10)

Orville: Also won't initiate, though its more because he's a bit shy and very excited to give hugs (he's a wee bit touch-starved), doesn't want to hurt you accidentally with his enthusiasm. Shame because he's a very good hugger, very warm and solid hug (9/10)

Pigpatch: Honestly not a huge hug person, but will give you a side-hug if you ask. More likely to just pat you on the back lol (2/10)

Nedd Bear: Big goofy lad, will absolutely give you a hug. Won't pick you up but will bear-hug you regardless, squeeze you tight- maybe a little too tight though, you might have to remind him you have organs and bones you'd like to keep intact lmao (5/10)

Glamrock Freddy: Very good, comforting hugs. If you're significantly shorter than him he'll kneel down and hug you. Very gentle if you need, very firm if you need, and always asks first. (11/10)

Glamrock Chica: Pretty decent hugger! Probably has pizza grease on her hands though. Will pick you up and swing you about if she's excited enough. (6/10)

Glamrock Bonnie: Always excited to give hugs! Will pick you up and squeeze you tight, forgets his own strength sometimes. But his ears twitch and his lil bunny tail wags when he hugs you, so you can excuse your spine being turned to dust (6/10)

Monty: Surprised and secretly delighted to get offered/be asked for a hug. A little unsure at first, but ends up giving a very enthusiastic hug, RIP your bones and organs (7/10)

Roxy: Might roll her eyes and call you sappy, but actually bawling inside because she can't remember the last time someone wasn't too intimidated to offer/ask for a hug from her. Puts everything into that hug, and doesn't let go (7/10)

Sun: Will pick you up and spin you around if he's in a good mood, if he's in a bad one you're being kidnapped and dragged off to the blanket fort for emergency cuddles. Ditto if you're in a bad mood. Lanky but still a good hugger, very clingy though, won't let you go until you ask, and even then he'll whine and droop like a dying flower. Sun is a master of emotional manipulation (6/10)

Moon: The most gentle hug you've ever received in your life. Very soothing and calming, you feel very safe. But watch out! Sometimes he'll "fall asleep" (a lie; you can tell because he's started giggling) so he can hug you longer. And then he "sleep-uses the cable" to "sleep-kidnap" you and before you know it, you've been blanket-burrito'd and laid down in the pillow fort in their room, with him still hugging you. Can't complain though, literally the comfiest you've ever be... zzz (7/10)

DJMM: Okay, so he can't actually hug, but he does his best 😭 very gentle and inviting, opens one of his hands and sets it down so you can climb in, will carefully enclose you (or let you hug his finger if you're claustrophobic) and if you're cool with it, he'll let you splay yourself out on his back and hug him like that. Gentle giant, loves hugs, cursed with being an absolute unit though (9/10)

okay but having a nice day in with frat boy carlos and nerdy charles would be so perfect. carlos usually wakes up earlier than you to go to the gym but instead he’s making you and charles a small breakfast in the morning and some coffee. then he’s waking you two up with a bunch of kisses, looking at you two cuddled up with adoring eyes. but now that he’s back in bed, charles gets a little whiny. the bed feels so much warmer bc carlos is a walking furnace and you and charles tend to get cold while you sleep. you’re pulling carlos back under the covers between you and charles.

and just imagine watching carlos work out and you’re teasing charles bc he’s getting very very distracted by carlos while you two are supposed to be doing the dishes (even tho you’re definitely ogling your boyfriend as well). carlos notices and wants to rile his partners up a little more and takes off his shirt when he’s done and you and charles are all flustered just like “wow” and “we have the hottest boyfriend.” and you’re all like “i have the hottest boyfriends” and it makes charles even more blushy and giggly. then you give charles a bunch of kisses and carlos is like “what about me???” and you’re both a little surprised when charles is the one who starts kissing carlos and you.

i also think frat boy carlos would be a huge play fighter. like kind of aggressive and manhandling you and charles but in a soft affectionate way? and you’d constantly be letting your boyfriends rest their head on your lap while you comb their hair.

but then to take a back a bit, just imagine like in the beginning stages of the relationship (maybe when charles doesn’t really know that it is a relationship he just has a huge crush on you two) there’s a little event at carlos’ frat house and charles tags along with you both. and at some point you’re sitting on the couch, you’re on carlos’ lap and charles next to carlos with your legs resting on charles’ lap. and charles just freezes up and he’s like what the fuck is this, looking nervously at carlos who just smiles at him adoringly and is quick to put an arm around charles shoulders kinda in that casual guy way where it’s like resting on the couch but it’s kinda cute and hot???

everything about this dynamic is so soft and cute. i wanna be in this so bad
