this is somewhat of a vent post & something i said i would not do again but has been plaguing me enough that i think getting it out might feel better. so. has anydoggy else been. Baffled and upset by nora sakavic’s refusal to speak on how terribly aftg has treated its characters of color? with the author of the series coming back with a new book and starting up on her online activity again, and questions of what she’d change about aftg bubbling up, it’s particularly glaring to me that we are all playing this very long game of pretend where we ignore how badly the non-white cast has been treated & her lack of thoughts on it

and i understand not wanting to bring up nicky and thea because people pick on her for it. i’m not trying to discredit nora sakavic’s terrible history of getting harrassed online by aftg fans. but i think it is very cynical, and it is very juvenile, and most of all very cruel, that she gets to ignore the very real ways the books have set up these characters to be hated. i think it’s obvious why the characters who get the most hate are the only canonical characters of color, and i think we do not get to treat this like a deliberate decision on the fandom’s part when the books have put these same characters in degrading and embarrassing and terrible positions in the first place. aftg is not a story about nice characters with clean pasts, but there is a very specific nastiness to the only characters of color being a brown man who sexually harasses and later assaults the main character, a black woman whose only scene is her lashing out at her love interest after being ignored for the first two books, and the japanese villain who gets maybe two lines of complexity before he goes back to being a terrible person. the white cast, in comparison, while not at all free from flaws, are never shown to commit mindless evil; all of their actions are ultimately justified. the book goes out of its way to give them concession after concession. we know exactly who to side with, because aftg tells us who these people are. does nicky’s assault ever get addressed in the books? does riko’s reasoning to be the way that he is ever gets more than briefly aluded to? is thea reserved even a shred of humanity or grace in her one scene?

anyway. it’s been years of talking about this and the fandom has been constantly hostile to criticism in this regard, and more recently any criticism at all, and it’s Grating to be on the other side of this discussion. it’s exhausting to know that in ten years we do not get even an acknowledgment besides the author saying she will not answer questions about nicky and thea anymore. it’s upsetting and it’s ugly and i wish no one had to talk about this again, but we do because what i thought was common sense has been washed away by a sudden influx of no-nuance adoration for the trilogy. basically i hope we all explode

#this has been so upsetting to notice but 🥹whatever #there is a different kind of bitterness to thinking about how ten years have passed #and we are getting new content that changes and maybe even rectifies many of the ways we see and interact w aftg #and none of it not a bit of it addresses the racism #how it’s been ten years and the only thing we really get to show it is a book about a ship between two white men the fandom came up with #after seeing them be Suggested to interact in canon #i understand not wanting to hurt nora sakavics feelings by asking her about this #but imagine how tired we are. Imagine how tired we are #do you know how bad it feels to read through nicky’s worst moments in aftg #and know that he was written this way because he looks like me?#do you understand how exhausting it all is. can you imagine?#the fandom has been so quick to undo the criticism fans of colors have been making since day one #and for what. for what! my doves. for what?#have we come out of it any greater? have we done anything but lie to ourselves?#and anyway this is not some mindless pessimism #this is not me telling you that aftg is bad and you cant love it; cant have it mean anything to you #this is me saying that when we acknowledge these things it makes us better readers and better people #nora sakavic if you are reading this from whatever hellhole america you find yourself in #grabs you by the shoulders. This is not the end #this is not something to sit back and feel bad about #you have opened the floodgates of hell with tsc. kick the door in and release a revised version of aftg #there is a real material way for you to make this better. it is possible and it will not kill you #i would read a revised aftg. my mutuals would. many many many many fans would #making mistakes is not just a human right its a human inevitability #but we do not have to let ourselves get defined by them. Um yeah guess what I’ve rescued yet another newborn kitten.. the fourth !!!!!! in less than a year !!!!

#apparently there are lots of stray cats in my neighborhoods or people who just don’t get their cats fixed //:#found this one near my house and I’m not posting any pictures of it yet because they can be upsetting #it was on the brink of dying yall I started crying it hurt my heart so baddd. no way was I just gonna leave it there #it was so frail and thin. it’s eyes were literally glued shut from an infection #obviously we cleaned it up and have been feeding it kitten milk and putting antibiotic ointment on it’s eyes #it’s doing much better and feels fuller :’))#kittens are so much work and energy but it’s so worth it to help them and see them get better #the other 3 kittens I’ve rescued are now very happy healthy and mischievous cats with owners who Love them #my sister being one of them :)#txt post #nonsims

uuuuuhhh no reason just wanna see the robot get preggers because nobody is really taking advantage of the narrative consequences of the robots of ULTRAKILL having fleshy bits inside them (in my humble opinion hahahaha...hahaha....hah....). Anywhosen also a sucker for general Bad End especially when it involves a psycho-sexual (breeding) binding to a greater entity but also I wanna see the murder-robot get knocked up. And the galaxy brain bit of this is instead of calming down they just get Worse.

YEAH NO ONE REALLY TAKES ADVANTAGE OF THAT. and well i mostly assumed a very small percentage of people actually want to breed the robots like that which is why.

also i don't think this as a bad end, but a bad path that can lead to some other.. inch resting things (my stupid ass is trying to craft a plot with horror and drama from this path and how it'd change the story slightly despite knowing I will never get around to writing it in fic form except tiny excerpt ideas and art)

personally its his Attitude for me! like his general nature the way he stands and uses his body, his love of dance and flair for the dramatic etc scream performer to me and i will die on the hill that he REALLY had fun pretending to be a random pizza guy. plus the arts usually are the go to besides sports for kids with anger issues in my experience. and as we all know hes the bat musical's biggest fan.

Interesting interesting. Thing is for me tho that's while I agree he's very dramatic and a performer it's not really in a theater way?? Like the only time we see him actually put on a performance it's either to a) annoy people or b) manipulate them (good and bad). He's already really into sports he just got banned from wrestling and took up vigilanting shortly after. Stage acting is just such a specific Thing that requires a specific type of person and I'm not convinced he's built for Theater with a capital T. 50/50 on whether he'd actually apply himself or whether he'd get as far as warm up exercises before his cringe-o-meter maxes out and he squirms away

it kind of bothers me that witcher fans don’t really unite under sapkowski’s name like other fans of fantasy authors do (e.g. “tolkien fans”).

in practically any other fandom of fantasy books, save for the particularly rancid authors known for their disappointing and shameful behavior or views (e.g. jk r*wling), it’s just regular business to say the author’s name. but sapkowski’s name is treated like a dirty word in the witcher fandom, for really no good reason…

it must be asked — what is stopping us from doing so?! why don’t we call ourselves sapkowski fans. it would be much easier than saying “i’m a fan of the witcher, but only the books, i don’t consider the various adaptations canon, etc. etc.” … “half a hundred words, when three are enough!!”

half of people say that guilty is about taemin killing all his bunkmates, and half of people say its about him turning them all gay, but theyre kind of the same thing when u look at thru the lens of guilt = sin, and in his eyes hes "damned them" by turning them to a life of homosexuality (but for real this time). also the "guilty pleasure" aspect where pleasure = sin and vice versa. everyone he touches becomes gay (gives in to pleasure), and by association becomes "guilty" (sinful), and at the same time he has his own guilt about making them that way, tho hes kinda like "welp, it is what it is" about it. its all so extremely gay catholic in that way.

I have… lots of thoughts on milsiril and kabru and the commentary on mixed-race family/adoption, in particular white parents with children of color. I think it’s really cool kui incorporated this into the story because lots of (particularly white) people just think adoption is this pure altruistic thing and don’t think about the negative affects it has on kids (again, kids of color) to not have people of their own culture to grow up with.

#I’m white so I can’t pretend this is something I am able to fully understand #and I feel like it’s not my place to write an essay on it? I’m sure poc could do it a lot better than me #but someone who is close to me is a poc in a kind of kabru adjacent situation #and I don’t want to give details bc this is personal and (obviously) not just to me so I don’t really want to talk about it too much #my point is. kabru ans milsiril just hit me really hard #I really love that kui made their relationship a relatively good one for the most part but she doesn’t just pretend it’s perfect #because it’s like. even if your parents are the best they can possibly be.l #if they don’t understand your culture that’s still a huge loss isn’t it?#and milsirils parenting skills….. definitely need a lot of work even if she means well #and the description of her adoptions as a ‘hobby’ makes it seem rather flippant imo #(not sure if that was just a translation thing tho)#but my impression is that kabru does still think of her fondly and is grateful for her taking him in and teaching him things #at the same time he does voice his frustrations about the cultural disconnect between them and her being ‘overprotective’#but yeah #like that kind of thing needs to be talked about I’m grateful that she not just doesn’t shy away from it but puts it in your face like that #.txt #dungeon meshi #oh also clarification #when I say kui talks about this stuff I do mean as an allegory #bc while I don’t think it is at all a coincidence that kabru is dark skinned and milsiril is white (coded?)#their skin color doesn’t really come into account here #it’s really the disconnect between elves and tall-men #but look me in the eye and tell me that’s not what she was going for
