Opinion on Ral Zarek now being an Otter in both meanings of the word?
Tumblr media
rant time i talked about this on Twitter a bit yesterday but it's so fucking stupid. like it's kinda cute that Bloomburrow has the kingdom hearts lion king world "if you go here you're an animal while you're here" thing, but also the only thing we were really told about Bloomburrow leading up to it was "there will be no humans on the plane". so we're all like oh shit, cool, sounds like it's gonna be its own unique thing without a bunch of Dudes You Know in it since there's no humans in it, right? we can finally escape the cycle of banal, tropey sets that are mostly just "Characters From Magic's History Dress Up In Costumes" (MKM, Cowpokez, NEO, Capenna) but nope. of course not. if you planeswalk/omenpath to bloomburrow, you turn into a furry! now watch them sell secret lair packs of fur-tfed planeswalkers, because of course every set needs to be a vehicle for a bunch of stupid gimmicky Products™️ they can sell to gamers with extremely loose wallets
Tumblr media Tumblr media
oh, yeah, and alongside this announcement was that they're cutting off printing of portuguese cards. it's not the Biggest deal since I've heard firsthand in non-English speaking countries that they usually just end up using the English cards anyways (gee I wonder if this has anything to do with the globalization of American culture lol no problems there). but they only decided to cut off the printing of portuguese (and simplified chinese) cards because they're facing a 2% drop in profits this year... because of all the stupid royalty fees they're paying on their dumbass Universes Beyond crossover bullshit lol
Tumblr media
i've loved Magic since i started playing in high school, but as of late that love has been waning a good bit. the game is so bogged down by corporate product shilling bullshit. every card needs 900 alternate arts. 900 alternate borders. every set needs a hideous alternate card treatment. every set needs 56 different kinds of booster packs. no more Block-format releases, no more core sets, just products, products, products, products.
Tumblr media
i used to be a big fan of Commander/EDH, but ever since it really caught on and Wizards/Hasbro decided "well, this is the most popular gamemode, we now need to design the entire game around it" and it kinda completely ruined commander imo. what was once a gamemode about running weird, niche interactions and building something with a unique flavor or playstyle now boils down to "well, just pick one of the 92849634796782435678 legendary creatures they've been printing for the past few years and run all these extremely pushed commander staples they keep printing" and it just ain't fun anymore. gotta sit down at the table and look at entire Doctor Who decks and Transformers cards and Tomb Raider cards and etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc. Commander tables are just fucking billboards now lmao
Tumblr media
it's very clear WOTC/Hasbro has no idea what to do now that they did the Giant Multiverse-Ending Threat of the Phyrexians in All Will Be One. much like the marvel movie franchise which MTG has been so emulating for years now (AND HAS EVEN SIGNED A FUCKING CROSSOVER DEAL WITH AS OF LAST YEAR, SEE YOU IN 2025 THANOS COMMANDER DECK), we're at the period where they're just throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks, twiddling their thumbs with these boring, tropey sets, all the while drowning players in a deluge of alternate arts, secret lairs, crossovers, etc. a common complaint among magic's playerbase is that nowadays they're literally selling too much shit. preview/teasers season for one set will immediately be followed by previews and teasers for another set. there's no time for anything to breathe it's just buy buy buy buy buy buy buy buy buy buy buy buy buy buy buy.

anyways stop giving hasbro money, print proxies and play magic for free :)

Hybrid Legend Commentary: From Across the Multiverse
Tumblr media
I'm glad to see that a lot of people were excited for this contest, and I think that swinging for the fences in terms of what we know people will like pays off. There's no specific balance that needs to be struck, no lessons to be learned as if we're taking a test. Knowing what's fun is its own test, really, when you compare it against base desires. Is this getting a little too philosophical? Fine, let's get personal.
Sometimes I have contest ideas that are cerebral and weird and make sense only to me. Frankly, I have a lot of those, and those ideas are also based off of the notion that I know more about MTG than I actually do. Shocker: I'm just a dude playing cards. And I'm also someone who sees cool things happen and forms emotional attachments to them. Wort really was just a card that I fell in love with when I was looking at ways to make my very first precon deck happen back in the day. I played random Spirit cards, random creatures—and it worked, and it was fun. Now that we're in the present and I can think critically about card design, I still love those memories. Applying them here and watching everyone else apply them is what makes this all worthwhile.
As we get into commentary, don't forget that JUDGE PICKS are cards that either had an awesome idea I wanted to point out, challenged me in a cool way, or were just plain good and limited by the fact that we can only have so many slots in the top six. Carrying on:
@corporalotherbear — Glissa, Flame of Evolution (JUDGE PICK)
Tumblr media
Giving haste in mono-green is super aggressive, but not entirely unheard of; without looking it up, green is either secondary or tertiary in it, right? On a legend, it's a bit of a push but WAR Samut did it, right? I think with the combat trigger, expanding the combat damage trigger from Glissa herself to other creatures is a nice twist on tradition. A curious thing to contend with is the integration of red... Who is the tyrant to which she is referring? Elesh Norn, Vorinclex? The red feels like it's coming from a non-Phyrexian philosophy, ish. Urabrask is a complicated character. Still, her role in the Hunter Maze feels fairly freeing to me.
For the record, the abilities here are pretty great as it stands. Green and red could both use the growth ability, and it makes T5 plays (and small creatures, too) into Sliths, which is really damn neat. There's a chance that this could be a 5-drop just because of the benefit it brings to your board presence, but that's also assuming they can connect, so who knows? As an aggressive legend, she's pretty hard to deal with, and even if she attacks and dies the turn she comes down, it'll beef up your board and make for a wild time. I think GU would be the wildest combination, honestly—hasty blue creatures in the shell are nasty if they have the right evasion.
Unrelated to the card, back to the color philosophy questions: evolution is a strange beast when it comes to red philosophy. Is there inherent self-drive with how individuals are affected by their environments, or would a red-aligned character resist evolution and its involuntary chain of relationships? There's a wild conflict there that's really cool to think about.
~
@cthulhusaurusrex — Teysa, Envoy of Law
Tumblr media
As far as non-interactive cards go, this one is certainly one that fits the bill. I think that first strike is one I'd have to hear an argument for in terms of blue's slice, but if there's enough relevance with the return, well... I get what the argument might be, but I don't think I'm swayed, especially since this card isn't the most fun for a board state. Only having one is probably best since it muddies up the board and is essentially a good taxing defender. Without the ability to utilize the stall on this particular card, I've got the current impression that this card wouldn't do much beyond being a big brick in the middle of combat. Nobody gets in, nobody gets out. Can't say that it's a fun incentive.
But the flavor is something I suppose I can roll with. Once more, we have a maze runner running with a different crew, and I'll admit that the Dragon's Maze version of Teysa was pretty great and had some power going for it. I can imagine that that's where you got your inspiration, since this card doesn't seem to have anything to do with either of Teysa's other cards. Fine by me! I just wish there was something more that she did besides gum the battlefield here. Still, the combat orientation is a nice touch.
~
@curiooftheheart — Gaddock Teeg, Paranoid Cenn
Tumblr media
I want to defend this card because it feels remarkably fun and hateful; I used to play hardcore Azorius control back in the day, and having something like this on the battlefield is sometimes even better than Grand Abolisher. I mean, Grand Abolisher is incredible, but this also stops triggered abilities from triggering, it looks at abilities of lands... Oh, wait, it looks at the abilities of lands. Might want to clarify that your opponents can do mana abilities, because otherwise things will get real litigious. IIRC mana abilities can't be countered, right? I'll need to read up on that a bit more.
All the same, I think you were the only person who shifted a Lorwyn character, which makes sense because there actually weren't too many. Brion, Nath, and Wydwen were the only others, right? Maybe so. No matter! In another world, on a shadowy moor, the paranoia increases. Honestly even though it's already established as something that's been tried and true I like the approach you took to this prompt in a way that's actually canon-adjacent. Unless Gaddock died. In which case, shame on you. But yeah, I'm personally a fan of hatebears. I am also of the mindset that cards like this might be too complex for some players. They can just keep a Gaddock count or something, though. Not my problem.
~
@damndroid — Adrix, Unparalleled Genius
Tumblr media
Ambitious, granular, and weird! Let's talk about it and start with the flavor. This is a dark turn for sure, and I have the feeling that we'd have to really dig deep to find what happened in the past. Nothing wrong with that, though! From childhood friends to adulthood fiends, you've got an evil genius who uses their friend's body for unethical experimentation. Or something. See, I get the gist, but I'm a little muddled in how the mechanics are supposed to convey the flavor.
Speaking of mechanics, your wording is all over the place, captain. Let's break it down. To the best of my ability, this card should say: "Whenever a non-Merfolk token you control is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, create a copy of that token, except its name is Nex, Research Assistant, it's 0/1, and it's a legendary Merfolk Zombie in addition to its other types. It gains haste. This ability triggers only once each turn." I'm a little stumped on the flavor of copying things like Treasure and Blood, or how the haste in blue is okay here. I think that aspects of this card would be okay, but perhaps a little more flavor explanation and mechanical directness could serve you well. Right now I'm not as on-board as I'd like to be.
~
@edenzom — Liesa, Vengeful Valkrie
Tumblr media
Something tells me that this one wasn't supposed to be common, but the rarity didn't get added in? Don't worry about it too much. I'll assume rare or mythic, probably rare. With that, I do like the triggered ability, and I like the concept of the unearthing. Unless unearth is a big mechanic, I think you could've spelled it out as just an activated ability of this Liesa, but that's your call. I feel that there are a few too many restrictions on the cost of the unearthing, though. Sacrificing humans may be enough. You're also in a trap, though, where you want to run high numbers of humans, but you also probably want the relevant demons, devils and vampires to make this card work the way that it wants to. Is that going too wide? I have the feeling that we're playing with too much flavor and not enough archetyping here.
Still, I'm definitely okay with Liesa going a little bloodthirsty here. She's tapping into the red of the plane and coming back with the power of the demons with which she once forged allyships with. There are costs to everything, but one would be forgiven for assuming that she was a demon herself were it not for the typeline there. With all the avenues that people went for this week, I think this one is really cool conceptually and aligned with the real possibilities that Innistrad's past could have gone down. What if the demons come back, y'know? I think a little mechanical smoothing could've made it go down quiet well.
~
@feyd-rautha-apologist — Reyhan, the Dragonslayer
Tumblr media
The flavor of this card from an Abzan standpoint, as well as a warrior standpoint, is pretty on-point for me. I'm curious what you were envisioning for the remainder of the timeline—did Reyhan succeed in defending her clan? If I'm interpreting right, then I can see a world where she becomes an outcast of sorts, a vigilante among the dragon-tribes. It's certainly an interesting angle, focusing more on the individual character rather than their role as a stalwart leader. White's heroic focus isn't often touched upon, at least when compared to the sometimes solitary nature of green and/or white's focus on the group and community.
The mechanics are a little iffy for me, specifically because of the keywords. The eternal hybrid problem is finding a way that both colors can have the overlap, and I feel that some flavor got in the way of in-pie reasoning. Reach is tertiary in white at best, and practically never appears in black (unless it's on a spider-themed card from what I can see). Deathtouch is out of white's pie. First strike is where there would be the most overlap, and that one's fine; it's still overshadowed by the other two. Regarding the wording choices, it's hard to find proper templating but I believe this card could read as: "Reyhan has X as long as it has at least one +1/+1 counter on it, Y as long as it has at least two +1/+1 counters on it, and Z as long as it has at least three +1/+1 counters on it." What would be the best XYZ abilities, I wonder? First strike could be a good aggressive baseline to start, but black and white together have flying, lifelink, double strike and in corner cases indestructible... It's up to you how these things stack and maybe keywords aren't the best place to go, honestly.
~
@helloijustreadyourpost — Zegana, Conclave Visionary (JUDGE PICK)
Tumblr media
Oh my goodness, it's supposed to be HAND, that's why the flavor didn't make any sense to me on the first readthrough. Anyway, let's ignore the ribbing that I had planned and point out instead that yes indeed, we have another maze-runner-turned-strange here on stage, and I'm living for it just like I was then. Now, people who are deep into the Ravnican lore might give me crap for this but I like the idea of there being inter-Selesnyan conflict, a little bit. Kkkkinda. Conflict isn't the right concept, but like, different points of view I suppose? Green and white merfolk are bizarre but everyone's accepted, so there's that. Zegana's a cool character from what I remember, so this would be a cool break indeed.
And there's one thing that Zegana's known for, and you've brought that to life here for sure. I wanted to commend this card as a judge pick because of how much of a pain it would be in limited and how the Selesnyans really needed a card like this to go hog wild. It's a card that probably would entice commander players with its swinginess and it fits perfectly into the shells that already want the +1/+1 counters. Board buffs make the world go round and she's no exception. It's also super interesting that everyone BUT her gets the counters. That benevolence is a good touch to show the differences between both card and character.
~
@hypexion — Feather, the Fallen (JUDGE PICK)
Tumblr media
Angels without flying definitely get my attention. Looking up Feather's past (again, I'm not super deep into Ravnica), the fact that she had her wings bound makes this card agonizing to see. An angel that has to walk among the blood-soaked streets and make her mark known, disgraced in her power, sword in hand... What's really cool to me is how not-Rakdos she is here. There's no sense of joy or revelry, no art in what she does. There's business to attend to, refracted through the blood covering her eyes... I'm reading too much into this but the POINT is: it's cool.
The mechanical thoughtfulness is also a good touch. While it's a little close to home, the fact that it has to target Feather herself is a good step. Removal begets removal, and buffs mean more removal. I do think that she should be rare and not mythic, but only because opening her would mean a hyper-narrow combat deck if you're gonna build around her aggression. I don't think there's that much real estate to be had. Now, cantrips in the right shell might make her far stronger than I'm initially thinking. Right now, though, I'm landing in the camp of decreased rarity, one line of flavor, and you're golden. Unlike Feather. Poor angel.
~
@kalinary — Etrata, the Consumption
Tumblr media
I always thought that oozes were more of a Simic thing, but I'm willing to buy that the murky and stinky under-sewers would be home to a nasty character like this. As for the how and the why... Well, I think that we're missing a couple things on this card. I'd like to have known more about what this card really represented, what she does here, what part of her is still vampyric and the like. "The Consumption" is a pretty big title. I'm not currently getting a sense of story scale.
Mechanically, I'm also underwhelmed. Having to pay a cost that's also contingent on combat damage, AND the fact that it has to eat a creature, AND the fact that it has no evasion and the body is really underwhelming for a mythic... There's a lot left to be desired with this card. When making these big mythics, the things to consider aren't just how the character on them is depicted, but also: if this card is filling in a powerful slot in a set, what can you do to make it theoretically stand out above the theoretical rares? What's the floor/ceiling for that balance? It's a fine card conceptually and I don't dislike the ability. It just feels like a bulk uncommon that's missing flavor text more than a big Golgari legend.
~
@maypletreeway — Gor Muldrak, Trailblazer
Tumblr media
I think that I'd've wanted to be told more about Gor's journeys through an attached blurb rather than the flavor text we have here. In that limited space, what I would have wanted to see was how Gor changed completely. What about the red separates him from the blue of his research? From the beginning, I mean—because here and now, I can definitely sense the gist: crazy research guy cuts down the land, makes the paths, discovers the salamanders. That I'm on board with. With how the flavor text is written, I feel like this is more on the continuation of a timeline rather than the alternate/twisted universe.
What I don't fully understand is why, mechanically, Gor has protection from salamanders here. It made sense on the Commander card, but not as much when you're looking at a table where you're the only person making them. Flavor as justification only goes so far. Frankly I think that a solid protection from blue would've been fine. IMO the only reason his first card has any kind of protection is because it was intended for folks to turn salamanders against one another. What I really like about this card is the aggression that you're putting on display. Sacrificing a land to get a 4/3 is pretty bonkers even if it's not as fast as Titania + Safekeeper or something. I'd run a version of this in Gruul aggro.
~
@misterstingyjack — Vargus, Wrathful Raider
Tumblr media
Vargus is one of the hottest pirates to sail the multiverse seas, so you've got a lot to make up for in that department. What's happening here, I think, is that you've made a strange Commander-y card that's an odd duck in limited. The thing about goading is that you've got this scenario where you're encouraging folks to attack in a multiplayer manner—goad's specific wording implies it. With a standard set, is that the most grokable? I don't think so, not to the extent that it should be one's first choice for mechanics here.
Still, the vibe of the card is significantly different. Cutting the blue takes the seafaring nature out of the pirate and replaces it with the brutality of plundering. Brutal indeed—a strong way to spread the love. If we're just looking at this from a multiplayer perspective, this card does everything it needs to do well, and the small pirates get to swing in and create trouble for an already troubled opponent. Giving them creatures that deal damage is pretty nuts even if they might not stick around, y'know? In 1-v-1 limited, you're going to get your hits in and I think that this card can hold its own. I'll contend that this design is better in a Commander set than a standard set. I'll also contend that it's pretty slick regardless.
~
@nine-effing-hells — Kruphix, God of Whispers
Tumblr media
You're gonna have to make a pretty strong argument for having a mechanical shift from devotion being less than five to less than seven, and why you changed the wording when Phenax is available for a template. As for scrying and surveiling, I think that highlights a personal pseudo-frustration that we live in a world where both of those things are viable in a standard environment. As far as the gods go, I have to say that this card itself feels weak comparatively. There's Eligeth who does it without the life loss, and the build-around is asking for more than I feel is reasonable.
A lot's not changed between this and the original Kruphix with same mana value, same stats. With the manifestation, though, I'll admit that you've made a super cool connection between Kruphix as a prophetic god of knowing re:possibility and as a god of knowing re:accruing that knowledge. Greatness at any cost and whatever, right? The people demanded knowledge and there came a god that rewarded both cunning and ambition. That much I'll absolutely give to you. The rest of the card isn't making me super enthused.
~
@spooneater457 — Tolsimir, Bane of the Conclave
Tumblr media
The alternative history you've presented here is concise and pretty well-done. What's up with everyone bringing up Ravnican legends in cool ways this contest? Anyway, not knowing much about Tolsimir beyond the wiki, I think the sense of story you've made is quite interesting. Tolsimir lives, and the dryad is punished, and there's a lot of shakeup in the guild. If nothing else, you can take the joy in knowing that your card made me actually look up the Karlov Manor story to fully understand what was happening.
I do know my mechanics, though, and I know that you've given lifelink to a creature that's red and green, and neither one of those colors have access to lifelink even on their own. Riot's another story, and I appreciate that, although it could've used some reminder text. The damage trigger is, AFAIK and unfortunately, out of red's pie. Green can get some contingent damage, but this is pretty widespread. I think that this card's the sum of its parts and some of its parts are really messed up to the point of being way out of line. As much as I think your story path is one of the coolest divergent splits, I would go back and check the hybrid relationship.
~
@stareyedesper — Dack, Enduring Scoundrel
Tumblr media
As you might've seen by now, this was a hybrid contest, not just a multicolor one, where you had to change (e.g. replace) one of the character's colors. Additionally, this was supposed to be based on legendary creatures and not planeswalkers. I'll make some quick judgements, but do keep in mind the contest requirements for next time.
Mechanically, I think it was ambitious to have the specific haunt clause on there. For ease of access, I feel that it could've been easier to just have a death trigger that was contingent upon Dack remaining in exile.
Flavorfully: this is where I'm also a little bit lost. Where is the alterternate aspect happening here? As far as I can tell this takes place right after War of the Spark when Dack dies, and thus becomes a ghost, but that's just one possibility and not a full change of timeline.
~
@tanknspank — Kaseto, Orochi Maverick (JUDGE PICK)
Tumblr media
The orochi are a weird bunch, aren't they? I think you're really pushing the limits of green recursion here, but hey, green gets cards back, red gets the temporary reanimation—there's nothing technically being broken here. It's a great modification staple, and I feel that seeing the orochi reclaim their wild side is an interesting move. Reading up on Kaseto, I can see where you've gone for the change of timeline pretty exactly: he rejects his ancestors and fights against the encroaching world centuries later.
And as far as limited goes, this one feels like a beater, and there's not much more to say about it. I can see the late game having some awesome auras coming down from the creature that had died before with the auras on them, and equipment in the form of reconfigured creatures makes the aggro deck that much more aggressive. Zero complaints here. I think he's a fun casual commander, a fun limited card, and you can use a lot of natural development and sacrifice to make him worthwhile. Maybe I'm not having my heartstrings tugged at with this change of life experience, but that hardly matters when the snake kicks butt—hence a well-earned JP.
~
@wildcardgamez — Killian, Memory Mage (JUDGE PICK)
Tumblr media
Young Killian embracing his light side and kindling it with the fires of independence? Yes please! That's a nice change, and as much as the Strixhaven story was...something I didn't really follow, reading up on it makes this card far more unusual. The question the becomes whether or not the Lu family was now all Lorehold in their history (complete alternate universe) or whether this is the path where Killian has broken completely free of his father's shadow. I dunno about the rest of the Lorehold folks, but Killian here certainly feels more education-oriented and down-to-earth. Mechanics are pretty rad for heroic nonsense as well. The timing window restricts this card, but you've got to learn when to play it so that you can maximize the value. Additionally, there's no reason you can't run it out for exile-from-graveyard synergy, but what happens afterwards? Well, maybe it was a mistake to do that, or maybe not, and you learn as you play the cards more. I think the benefit of an school-themed set is that it's fun to have meta moments in that vein. It feels meta to me, anyway. One note is that it should be "exile an instant card" and not just "an instant," because of the way that objects in zones are referred to. I like how it's utilized both for removal and for combat benefits. Neat all around!

My “Shot in the Dark” Prediction for Magic’s Next Year of Story
Tumblr media
Wilds of Eldraine
We already know this story, but its contents are worth revisiting in order to have context for the rest of the story. Ashiok has helped Eriette, seemingly the aunt of Rowan and Will and a truly devious witch, prolong the sleep curse that was used to put all the Phyrexians invading Eldraine to sleep. Now, the curse is spreading and the Kindly Lord of the fae, Talion, is enlisting the help of others to correct a mistake they made by brokering a deal with three witches to construct this curse.
Tumblr media
Talion enlists Kellan, a half-fae child and one of the main protagonists of the next year of story at least, to defeat the three witches they worked with to construct the curse. Kellan wishes to know who his father is, so he accepts this quest. Meanwhile, Rowan has been deeply traumatized by the loss of her parents during the Phyrexian Invasion, and is slowly descending into a mad lust for power. And not just any power, but the power to change the world around her as she pleases. She hates how Will, a much bigger pacifist than her, is handling the whole situation, and has decided to take matters into her own hands.
Her quest eventually leads her to Eriette, who convinces Rowan to join her so that The Realm can live happily ever after in their dreams forever. After a climactic battle involving Rowan, Will, Eriette, Kellan, and Ashiok, The Realms are saved from the curse of slumber. Eriette is defeated by Kellan and Ruby, a companion Kellan met along the way who assisted him in defeating the various witches in his quest. Will plays as a game of Magic against Rowan, using a Control strategy to survive her Aggro strategy, so that he could stall until he had an opening to force Ashiok to flee by sending a bolt of ice at Ashiok’s chest. Rowan is then forced to flee.
Kellan, having completed his quest, eventually learns that his biological father is Oko, the bastard from the previous Eldraine set that famously turned King Kenrith (and most of Magic) into an elk. He then finds an Omenpath and unknowingly likely leaves Eldraine for a long time, having been transported to a different plane with no easy way to return. It is then implied that Eriette, after being broken out of jail by Ashiok, does the same.
Tumblr media
Lost Caverns of Ixalan
Now we get into the realm of speculation as we venture into the next set: Lost Caverns of Ixalan. We know little of this set except that it is a “Race to the Center of the Earth” style of story that will also have us meet various mythical figures from Ixalan’s mythology. However, there are three particular, currently unconfirmed characters I want to speak about appearing in Ixalan, as their presence is either very significant for the remaining story or was hinted at in earlier sets.
Tumblr media
Vraska was last seen on Ravnica, recently compleated and sent off by Elesh Norn to do the same to the rest of Ravnica. However, she was defeated by Ral and then mysteriously vanished after having a vision of Jace flash within her mind. Seeing as Ixalan is where Jace and Vraska’s love for each other first blossomed, I believe it is likely the last remains of uncompleated Vraska’s instinctively planeswalked to Ixalan as she was defeated by Ral. Due to the fact that Phyrexian planeswalkers were compleated likely through corrupting their sparks, the loss of her spark could cause Vraska to revert back to her normal form on Ixalan. This is important as she has both a role to play later and a familiar enemy to face.
Tumblr media
Azor, the one responsible for the Guildpact system of Ravnica, the creator of the Immortal Sun, and one of few characters who were once planeswalkers still alive to possibly rival Bolas as far as meddling goes, is currently still on Ixalan. However, with the appearance of Omenpaths, Azor has a new route to renew his meddling ways and potentially even return to Ravnica. Well, its a good thing the next set isn’t set on Ravnica yeah?
Tumblr media
Finally, Quintorius was last seen on Arcavios defeating the Phyrexians who invaded Strixhaven. At the end of his own quest, Quint sparked. While his role is yet to be seen, a set themed entirely around diving down to uncover the lost history of Ixalan sounds right up Quint’s alley.
Tumblr media
Murders at Karlov Manor
Oh would you look at that, the next set actually is on Ravnica. Someone has been murdered at Teysa’s manor, which, for a family most well known for turning into ghosts, isn’t particularly crazy sounding to me personally. However, it’s still a big deal as someone is going to get framed for these murders, and Ravnica is going to need a judge to decide who is guilty. Who could fill that role…
Tumblr media
Oh right. I think it’s likely Azor and Vraska return to Ravnica, only for Azor to meddle and attempt to put the blame on those he sees as the most chaotic for Ravnica, being Vraska and our favorite demon…
Tumblr media
…Rakdos. Whether they actually did it is meaningless, as this leads to the finale.
Tumblr media
Outlaws of Thunder Junction
This is where fates collide. Vraska and Rakdos flee through an Omenpath to the wild west, where they meet Oko and, eventually, Kellan as well. After joining with two other individuals, the “Magnificent Six” will face off against the cruel face of corrupt law, Azor, and change all of their fates forever. Eventually, Azor will be defeated, and likely flee to his other unfinished business partner, Ugin. This leads to the next story arc: the Dragonstorm Arc.

💚: What does everyone else get wrong about your favorite character?
Okay so for the whole crew: I love Slimefoot but it gets way too much of the spotlight and people but toooooooooo much emphasis on it. How come Slimefoot got both an Alchemy card (as much as I dislike Alchemy) and a team up card?? I think people just saw "haha janitor mushroom" and then ignored the rest of the crew. I guess that's not really something people strictly "get wrong" but it annoys me and I want to bitch.
I also just. Okay. I am gonna sound mean but I HATED "Shards of Nightmares" and I think it was a very phoned-in and stupid story. I am not blaming the writer. She tried with what she was given, I'm blaming WOTC. But it's so bizarre. Shanna would know how the Phyrexians operate. Hell, ALL of them would! Why would any of them think it was a good idea to cover the ship in oil and Phyrexian garbage?? It seems only Tiana voiced concern over this, when realistically, I don't think ANY of the crew (save for Raff, due to being so young) would have approved of that plan. I think it happened just so WOTC could be like "oooh, look, the Weatherlight got compleated!!! Hope is lost, AAAAAA!!" and push that angle.
I also think that the shoving of the crew to the side was a poor choice in the story. The planeswalkers + Danitha and Radha should have joined them on the ship. Faster travel + air superiority/advantage. Also it would've given the crew SOMETHING to do besides appear in one scene and pass the idiot ball around. They're smart, thoughtful, brave characters and they deserved SO much better.

“Do you expect me to talk?”
“No, Miss Covalt, I expect you to join us.”
The Mirran rebel strained uselessly against the restraints holding her to the operating table. Meanwhile a one-eyed Gitaxian hovered over her, expertly brandishing the surgical tools grafted to its arms. Despite its threatening appearance, however, the Phyrexian’s voice seemed more curious than anything.
“Miss Covalt, have you any preferences with regards to your physical compleation? Aesthetics, functionality, anything like that?”
“My name is Vy,” snapped the Mirran, “and no, thank you. Just do what you’re going to do.”
The Gitaxian’s eye widened. “Are you sure? Surely there is some aspect of your human body that you’ve found lacking, no?”
Vy rolled her eyes. “Sure,” she drawled sarcastically. “I could use some eyes in the back of my head.”
The Gitaxian made a nodding motion. Two more of its arms drifted into view. One was connected to a large syringe filled with glistening oil, and the other was casting a spell, causing the liquid within to bubble furiously.
“It shall be done.”
“Uh…no. Wait. I didn’t really mean…”
Vy blinked. Before she could register the syringe had vanished from sight, she felt a stabbing pain in her neck. She cried out, but the pain faded away as the sound left her mouth.
“The numbness should subside momentarily, as soon as you’re finished.”
Vy renewed her struggle against her restraints. To her surprise, the metal began to give. The underside of the operating table was devoid of any bolts or fastening plates, meaning the cuffs were only attached to the top of the table.
“…Wait…”
With mounting panic, Vy realized she could somehow see the table from beneath. She instinctively focused her gaze on herself, and loosed a scream.
“Yes, your new sensory appendages certainly have some sharp resolution, don’t they?”
Vy saw the metallic tendrils snaking out from the back of her head, each fixed with a glowing blue eye on the end. Chrome plating was spreading out from the base of the tendrils, and down her face at an alarming rate. Despite the groans coming from her restraints, Vy could still only watch in horror, with perfect vision, as the metal spread to the rest of her body.
“I WAS JOKING! I WAS…only…”
Vy tore herself free from the operating table, just as the chrome covered the last of her remaining flesh. She sat upright, but rather than lash out or attempt to escape, she merely looked around the surgical room, with both her original eyes and those protruding from her scalp. Finally her multi-faceted gaze came to rest on the Gitaxian, whose single eye was focused intently on her in turn.
“How do you feel…Vy?”
The new Phyrexian raised her arms in a languid stretch. Her metallic joints clicked and popped as she instinctively willed her metallic eye tendrils to do the same, giving them the illusion of hair whipping in an invisible breeze.
“Much calmer, and with an expanded perception, in every sense.”
Vy waggled one of her eyestalks for emphasis.
“You have my deepest thanks for sharing this with me.”
The Gitaxian squinted appreciatively at Vy. “Oh, it was no trouble at all. I’m hoping we can both learn a lot from each other! Er, if you are willing to join us, that is…?”
Vy finally rose from the operating table. She approached the other Gitaxian at a leisurely pace, the sound of her steps across the metal floor echoing through the room.
“I would love nothing more than to do so.”

You know, I really do feel more comfortable when I have an Otherness label to apply to myself.
Cyborg. Decepticon. Phyrexian. Hell, half a lifetime ago it was elf.
I think all expressing the same thing, that I feel fundamentally like I don’t quite fit in. I understand the people around me, mostly. I like them. I love some of them! But I don’t feel quite the same as them. Related but different.
Probably why I’m liking Phyrexian so much right now, above and beyond current fan thing. Both like the others and also not quite.
I used to feel alienated but now it gives me a weird sense of hope. If I’m not quite a whole human, maybe I’m a whole Something Else. Maybe I don’t have to try to be them exactly.

Favorite card from ONE for lore implications
Oh my god, just one?? I cheated. Here's two.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Phyrexians do have music and art— take that, people who claim they have no culture! Urabrask's forge is teeming with creatives and artists now unbound to explore their passions, who even express themselves poetically. It's a very human look at Phyrexian people and I always love that. Show me the Phyrexian poetry and music!
Also, ichor scrying, one of my favorite tragically underexplored aspects of Phyrexia! Plus the confirmation that glisteners are still very much a thing and that aspirant hadn't replaced the word entirely! I love ichor magic and it's so cool to see both a mechanical representation of it and a character, who willingly chose compleation, in harmony with the oil. I really want to see how each faction does it differently, because all Phyrexians tap into their ancestral memory in some way.
And finally - my absolute beloved, which will appear again in a later answer - Sawblade Scamp.

Dominaria United Who’s Hot Speedrun
Please, G-d, they cannot already be doing March of the Machines spoilers come on Phyrexia All Will Be One has been out for like, two weeks. Hnnnnnngh okay here we go.
DOMINARIA UNITED
Mostly disappointing, if I’m being honest! Like hey remember Chris Rallis’ Danitha and Anna Steinbauer’s Radha from last time we were on Dominaria? Hey, no worries if not, here they are:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Extremely hot! I’ve said a great deal about that version of Radha previously. Anyway now here’s versions of them from this set:
Tumblr media
Radha, Coalition Warlord (art by Randy Vargas)
Like I’m not complaining, you know, she’s still an absolutely massive elf lady with a huge sword (and you really don’t see enough muscular elves, do you?) but like in comparison to the above version...no, wait, sorry, I changed my mind, she is still extremely hot, I do very much still want her to rail me.
Tumblr media
Danitha, Benalia’s Hope (art by Magali Villeneuve)
This, though, is very much a “go girl, give us nothing” moment for Danitha. Which is fine! It’s a fine painting, and Danitha has to cut her Phyrexianized dad’s head off in this story if I recall, so it’s okay if she doesn’t feel quite up to the glamor shots. Not everything should be five-star wifelink material, you know?
Tumblr media
Join Forces (art by Aurore Folny)
We do get this nice gay little team-up for the both of them, which feels a little calculated, but I’ll take it. Okay what else we got, Dominaria United?
Tumblr media
Elas il-Kor, Sadistic Pilgrim (art by G-host Lee)
Ooh, now we’re getting somewhere! Love a woman just dripping with ichor.
Tumblr media
Phyrexian Missionary (art by Mila Pesic)
Ichor AND horrible cyborg parts, even better!
Hang on, do you hear something? A noise, as of distant thunder mixed with the clangor of the factories of Hell? Why, that could be none other than
Tumblr media
SHEOLDRED, THE APOCALYPSE (art by Chris Rahn)
All the way from New Phyrexia, the Dross Pits’ lovely Praetor-Thane has strapped herself into an ancient dragon engine: a potent force multiplier both for battlefield devastation and raw sexual appeal. (The dragon engine is a metaphor.)
This set also, in a rare turn of events, has a version of Liliana who absolutely does not make the cut. You really have to fuck up for that to happen.
NEXT TIME ON WIFELINK: THE BROTHERS WAR
Nothing. Like, actually nothing, and I’m not just saying that because I don’t want to have to review yet another set before I get to the good stuff. It turns out Old Phyrexia wasn’t nearly as hot as New Phyrexia. We’re skipping it.
NEXT TIME ON WIFELINK: PHYREXIA ALL WILL BE ONE, AT LONG LAST.

✨How I’d fix Magic the Gathering: March of the Machines Main Storyline✨
So to start, I’d like to be clear that I LOVED this story. I was absolutely giddy reading it throughout, but because of that it’s been on my mind, and so I want to share my only two big problems with it and how I’d address them (SPOILERS AHEAD BTW in case that wasn’t obvious)
1: The use of Chandra
Chandra didn’t do enough. And I’m not talking about after they got to Realmbreaker, I’m talking about everything before it.
What she did do, I loved. Her connecting to Wrenn was beautiful, and Wrenn as sort of a bridge between Nissa and Chandra as both tree and flame was great. Fantastic interactions all around.
But the only thing, and I mean the ONLY thing she thought about was Nissa. And it’s obvious why, but it led to her not being capable of anything other than thinking about Nissa. She’s either thinking about Nissa or thinking about not wanting to think about Nissa. When Koth or Urabrask mentions “the elf”, she gets agitated, but why? She was already on her mind, and it takes up a significant amount of time that could be filled with even minor battles.
<b>Solution:</b> her attempts at pushing Nissa out of her mind work (mostly). She’ll still feel constantly anxious, uncomfortable, unsettled, but she’ll lie to herself. Justify it by saying “of course I’m anxious, I’m fighting the Phyrexians.” So when the Resistance mentions the elf, it <i>really</i> discomforts her.
And in that big moment, where Nissa shows up directly in front of her as depicted in “Traumatic Revelation”, it’ll be both much more traumatic and much more of a revelation. The truth can’t be ignored anymore, can’t be pushed aside. It’s standing right in front of her now, and it’s even more justification that she wasn’t prepared for it, and why she completely froze. She <i>knew</i> she wouldn’t have to see Nissa like this. Because she fooled herself.
Thematically, as “Hope’s Beacon”, giving her more time up front to be a powerhouse clearing out small fry would let us get a feeling of that hope. The Mirrans see a burning sun clearing the way with ease, and think that with her, maybe they really can do this.
And when it’s revealed that Norn was prepared, that it was all a trap, that Nissa was there, and their shining beacon dims and quivers, they’ll all feel the dread that they had hidden until that moment.
As it is, Chandra is a lady that showed up proud and feisty, barely does anything, and then gets completely handled by Nissa.
2: The Ending
I think it’s pretty obviously annoying that out of the seven compleated planeswalkers, only one of them had a really confirmed and “satisfying” death, and it was in a side story, and it was Lukka, and let’s be honest, who gives a shit about Lukka.
We thought they may have learned their lesson after the backlash of War of the Spark, where again, after all the hype, not much changed, and nobody was satisfied. Emotional stakes are important to engaging storytelling, and repeatedly subverting them will do nothing but teach us all not to care any more. Especially in this case, since it <i>seemed</i> pretty obvious that phyresis and compleation were irreversible, only for that to have been retroactively taken away. All that time you spent thinking, “who will it be next? Will my favorite characters be taken?” is now null. It wouldn’t have mattered if they were or had been. It would have been undone in a couple paragraphs at the end anyway.
<b>Solution:</b> let ‘em die (or at least most of them). Some of them can be easily fixed without even retconning.
Lukka: again, he’s the one that did really bite it (or got bitten, technically). Good.
Tamiyo: her real body was killed, but she had left behind a “story” of herself, basically a hologram clone. Not bad to be honest, if it is <i>temporary</i>. If it allows Nashi to get his closure, then it’s great. Let it be a small program, and let it fade away to memory as all stories do. The current ending of her and Nashi coming home implies that she’s just gonna still be there? But she has all her memories and such? So basically it’s the equivalent of just losing her spark. Let her die.
But also side note, Nashi should have ignited his spark in grief, but that’s my own wishes coming through. Just doesn’t make sense to me that in a multiversal flesh abomination invasion only ONE character ignited their spark.
Nahiri: SEEMS like she died, but NO BODY NO PROOF and I don’t trust Wizards to stick to it if they feel like dredging up old characters in a couple years. Unless the aftermath shows her limp body crushed under the Skyclave, I’m not satisfied. Let her die.
Jace and Vraska: I loved the story they had within Vraska’s little mind bubble, even if a lot of it when they were together was just a makeout sesh. That’s straight up good actually, and I like it a lot. That should have been it. Let their real bodies be fought and defeated, and killed. Let their minds live in what feels like an eternity together, and let their true selves be happy as their false forms are destroyed. Let them live their dreams together, and let them die together.
Ajani: let him die. The realest stakes we had in this story was Ajani. His being a sleeper agent was the hit that hurt the most, especially to himself. His “death” was tragic, and was what more than anything fueled Elspeth in this final journey. He was the connection between all of them, and his death would truly mean something. If it wasn’t miraculously reversed. Let him die.
Finally, Nissa: let her live? I’m actually okay with them curing ONE (1) of them. It lets them explore what it would be like for someone to live after what had happened to them, and if any, it should be Nissa. Obviously, as the pure elf with nature powers, being an unnatural being that still has synthetic parts would be a great contrast for her to live with. Also, WotC finally grew the balls to have queer characters in the story explicitly, and having the infamous “I like big manly men” fiasco only be followed by the death of her real love interest before it was canonized would be infuriating.
It didn’t really make sense to me why Karn and Melissa were able to revive both of them anyway. A spark for a spark, a life for a life. How’d they stretch two out of that deal?
Thanks for TEDing to my come talk.

wait, so I read your fic, and you mentioned that falco's parents are dead and soem stuff about xander's parents. what are your thoughts on the parents of the five demons? what are you going with in your fics?
I'm gonna tuck this under a "read more" because of spoilers for the Blood and Songbirds continuity. And it's long. And also, a lot of child abuse. It's not a surprise that these five ended up where they are today.
Falco Spara
In chapter 30, we get our first and (thus far) only look into Spara's family: His parents died when he was a young boy, and he was raised in the Church of Serra. It was early enough in his life that he doesn't remember them. Hilariously enough, even without the context, his life followed a very similar path to theirs.
Ser Edmonda Spara was once the leader of the Church of Serra's paladins and knights. She was often the first one to charge over the hill at whatever monster Old Capenna threw at them. This is the thing that made her future husband (Dane Harrelsone) fall in love with her. He was a rogue, she was a paladin, it's a tale as old as time. It just didn't end well - both were murdered.
The archpriest of the Church of Serra, Friede Thorn, was then the one that raised Falco until he followed in Edmonda's footsteps and became a paladin...and then later consort with Gothalahl, the Forsaken Prosecutor, who gave Spara power and led the paladins and knights to becoming the modern Brokers.
Raffine
Raffine's mother (Veronnia) and father (Isidor) were not on good terms, with Isidor leaving Veronnia and the unborn Raffine pretty shortly after they came together. Veronnia also kicked Raffine out as soon as Raffine could fly. Sphinxes were already rare in Old Capenna (Raffine would later only recall three others) so it's not like Raffine cared much about either of her parents. Signing the contract with her archdemon, Lorahl the Mindcage Tyrant, was the biggest "fuck you" that Raffine gave to the other sphinxes, especially her parents. Both of her parents were killed (though not compleated) by the Old Phyrexians.
Xander
This is the spicy one.
Xander's father (Ehlstan Maestros) was a minor lord in Old Capenna. He got married young to a druid named Elizabeth Bardsly, and Xander was their only child. (Xander, by the way, doesn't know that his mother was a druid to begin with.)
In chapter 18 of Blood and Songbirds, we find out that Ehlstan had a whole dungeon, where he would torture, murder, and otherwise attack and mutilate anyone he imprisoned there. When Xander was younger, he would hide in the shadows and wait for his father to return from the dungeon to gauge his mood and decide whether to make himself scarce or be ready for, well...anything similar.
In chapter 20 of Blood and Songbirds, we find out that Elizabeth had grown a garden in the courtyard that puts Jetmir's modern garden to shame. She left Ehlstan to rejoin the druid circle she had left upon marriage, and Ehlstan had the courtyard sealed away after she left. It's through Elizabeth's side of the family that Xander got his chronic illness that was a strong influence in him signing the contract with Raxi, the Shadowed Defiler.
Xander, Evelyn, and Spara worked together later in their young lives to kill Ehlstan and leave no trace of evidence. Under those "unfortunate" circumstances, Xander rose to be the lord of his little hamlet.
In chapter 31 of Blood and Songbirds, it's revealed that Elizabeth is "alive" as an Old Phyrexian, separate from New Phyrexia's invasion and part of the Phyrexians who still remembered Yawgmoth's teachings without the influence of the modern praetors.
Ziatora
Dragons are notoriously family-oriented. Egyn and Aezzo had a clutch of eggs together, though only Ziatora made it to hatching. Ziatora grew up with a thirst for adrenaline, which led to her clashing with knights and paladins both (which is why she and Spara still have beef with each other to this day). Against her parents' wishes, she became first a bandit leader, and then a demon through the contract with the Noxious Slaughterer, Mufingel. Egyn and Aezzo were both killed by Old Phyrexians and compleated, only to get killed again by their own daughter.
Jetmir
Spoiler alert: Jetmir is the only one of the demons who had a good relationship with both of his parents.
Jetmir was the prodigal son of Archdruid Lazzaro and his wife Seville. When he finally got old enough to lead the leonin druid circle, Lazzaro stepped down and let his son take it in a vastly new direction - partying and enjoying the finer things in life. Though they disagreed with their son on some things, Lazzaro and Seville lived nice long lives in New Capenna until dying of old age well after the Phyrexian invasion drew to a formal close.
Shoutout to them for being the least fucked up parents of everyone, honestly.

I have so many thoughts about Sorin Markov and how great he is as a character and why I love him so much, but I can't articulate these thoughts and feelings very well, so I'm just gonna ramble for a sec.
As much as we can all joke about how cringefail he can be, he's (in my humble opinion) one of the most interesting and complex characters in Magic. Yes, he's made a lot of mistakes, but his choices were always driven by his need to protect Innistrad. And his means of protecting Innistrad can both be seen as selfless in how he's protecting humanity at the cost of being despised by his own family, but also as a means of self-preservation so vampires don't wipe themselves out by overfeeding, which is why he embodies the white/black mana combination so well.
It's just,,,, mghntrhsnsmt,,, I love him so much, and he was written so well in Crimson vow, and I hope to see more of him in future sets because Crimson vow seemed to set up what could be a really cool character arc for him. Just,,, when he considered letting his grandfather kill him because Edgar was the only person Sorin believed truly loved him, and how he now has nothing left, but deciding to live anyway was so good, and it's only one moment out of many for Sorin's character (crimson vow's story is just so good).
I want to see how Sorin moves on after Crimson vow and how he handles his role of lord of Innistrad going forward. I want to see more of him cooperating with other Planeswalkers and forming meaningful connections with them. In March of the machine, I want to see him be at the front lines defending Innistrad from the phyrexians. I want him to settle his feud with Nahiri, and help the humans rebuild after the invasion. Imagine how cool it would be if he started to actively work with the cathars and help them protect humanity, or with Arlinn and her pack. Maybe even him allying with Sigarda or Liesa would be so cool. His character has so much more to offer and I really want to see more character development for him.

Writer’s First Line Game
Rules: post the first sentence of your last ten fics. If you haven’t written ten fics, share as many first sentences as you have.
Tagged by @stormikins thank you very much!
No pressure tags: @skittidyne @jasper-the-menace @littjara-compleated-sage
“Love From The Other Side” - (Magic the Gathering) Two planeswalkers find themselves on opposite sides of the Phyrexian invasion as they both do whatever it takes to make it back to each other and those they love.
“When others told us what to expect in Urborg, no one told us to expect hospitality.”
“From Sparks to Flame” - (Mass Effect)  Artemis Shepard never set out to become an Alliance hero, let alone the first human Spectre, but an unfeeling cycle has begun anew on Eden Prime. She has to get her team to not only trust her but also each other which is easier said than done. Part one of a story about how love and bonds (with the guns they find along the way) save the galaxy.
Later, when people asked Shepard how everything started, they were often disappointed with her answer.
“Beauty and the Furnace Beast” - (Magic the Gathering) A fairy tale inspired story about Ayara and Urabrask fall in love during the Phyrexian invasion of Eldraine.
“In all my years, I have never seen the sky this way,” Ayara said, looking at the odd voids in the sky.
“The One With The Lipstick Incident” - (Mass Effect) A gift written for @angstyastro featuring her Shepard, Isani. Thane is thankful for the continued blessings the Gods bestow on his family but that doesn’t mean he isn’t nervous or that things will go smoothly.  With Isani Shepard giving birth to twins, things were bound to get a little out of hand.
Thane would never fathom why the Gods chose to favor him as much as they had— even if this most recent blessing seemed to be a trial into itself.
“Things That Were And Never Will Be Again”- (Magic the Gathering) Ajani and Elspeth meet on Dominaria, not knowing they will soon be on opposite sides of the looming conflict about to beset the Multiverse.
Elspeth. She was here on Dominaria and alive.
“Same Song, Different Verse” - (Mass Effect) In a different universe, Council Spectre Garrus Vakarian is investigating Saren when he is shot down over Earth. He is found by Shepard and the two of them have to work together as other turians try to hunt him down as they try to rescue his informant, Tali.
Garrus could just hear his father’s voice berating him as he looked at the view of Vancouver.
“Reunion” - (Fallout 4) Nate didn’t die when he was shot by Kellogg. If only it was that simple. Now a ghoul, he’s come to accept his new life but a chance meeting at the Third Rail Bar changes everything as he comes face to face with who his wife is now.
“There’s your shares boys. Don’t spend it all in Goodneighbor, even you, ghoul.”
“In the End” - (Fallout 4) When Shaun decides that his mother should no longer be allowed to be influenced by the surface, he decides to keep her at the Institute with a synth copy of her husband, Nate, to keep her “comfortable”. As time goes on, Nate begins to realize just how cruel that was as the pieces fall into place for the beginning of the end.
He had been made as a replacement for her. It was simply a fact of his existence. Made in the image of her dead husband, Nate. He was a gift to her from their leader, Father, as she transitioned to her new life in the institute.
“More Than a Name”- (Transformers: Prime, Shattered Glass) An old one I am still proud of so I am throwing it here instead of my 9th fic
When a mission goes wrong, Starscream is forced to explore some harsh truths about himself and his views on the Vehicons under his command.
“Sir…I found him! Guys help me out!”
“Love in the Age of Gods” - (Smite) I cant believe this one squeaks in. I wrote it for my future wife.
Arachne and Serqet have been seeing each other for awhile but Arachne doesn't dare hope that it will last. Despite expecting the worst, Arachne isn't ready when she sees the end draw near. Serqet sees the situation in completely different light.
“That was completely unnecessary. We’re fighting but we’re not completely uncivilized.”

Golden Groups: Subtype Winners ~
Our winners this week are @horsecrash, @izzet-always-r-versus-u, and @misterstingyjack!
@horsecrash — Mirage Guardian
Deserts already stand out among nonbasic land types as having the strongest mechanical identity, with a particular focus on sacrifice and graveyards. Couple that with their strong flavorful identity—after all, most people know exactly what you mean when you say "desert"— and there's a lot of room for interesting designs. This, then, scores high in both categories, being a payoff that both mechanically slots into the existing archetype gracefully, and one that does it in a way that's so uniquely Desert. The targeting on the second ability being so unrestricted seems like it would inspire a lot of creativity, and the fact that you can trigger it on opponents' turns and wield it as a disruption tool opens up a lot of deckbuilding questions that I'd really love to answer. Great stuff!
@izzet-always-r-versus-u — Eriette, Weaver of Hexes
As it turns out, Auras are prolific enough that they've developed subtypes of their own. That's what gives us this strange little case of double-dipping, but the star of the show is very much Curses. Curses operate on a bit of an odd axis, but ultimately fit into the overarching theme of doing bad things to your opponent that staple negative Auras like Pacifism codify. Eriette herself is no stranger to negative Auras, but this version goes off in a bit of a different direction that I think makes it very interesting. Beyond the focus on Curses that original Eriette didn't much care for, the drain being one-and done rather than focusing on stockpiling could encourage more fast-and-lose enchanting, and her more aggressive body could lend credence to suiting her up with some Auras of her own. Additionally, extending the reach beyond creatures and into permanents in general opens some doors, in particular to black's rather nasty suite of land Auras. Overall, you've created a card that feels like a completely natural extension of a character and their themes that also plays in a completely different way, so bravo!
@misterstingyjack — Oru, Regenesis Architect
Does this even work? I honestly don't know if this works, but I so desperately want this to work. Transforming tokens is obviously still a very new and thus unexplored concept, but this sounds enough like something that should work that I'm more than willing to look the other way, because hoo boy, this is a beautiful piece of work. Right away, the flavor here is exquisite, evoking the classic trope of growing clones in a lab, and Incubators are the perfect fit. I love how the discard feeds the second ability, but the alternate cost means you can simply choose not to if what you want to copy is already in the yard but you still need an Incubator. I love how you only ever get one transformation out of a card, encouraging you to keep churning through your deck for the best specimens, becuase there's only so much genetic material to go around after all. I love how the clone keeps the distinct Incubator shape, sacrificing none of the type's unique identity and really selling that they're a Phyrexianized doppelganger rather than just the creature brought back to life. It's just all so good!
~
Runners will be up shortly, so hold tight! @spooky-bard

Pink Sleeves Pride Draft
June 15, 2024 | list: cubecobra.com/c/pink | deck pics | 4 drafters, 5 packs of 15, discard last 7
Tumblr media
Sponsored by Super Nibs.
A beautiful Pride month night, just days before the heat gets unbearable. Sitting on my patio talking about traumatic work stories and Katy Perry impersonating Zooey Deschanel. "She ran the world at the time!" Drink a queer- or else gamer-girl coded energy drink so you don't die when the Kit-Cat clock strikes 10 on Father's Day eve.
I draft Bug Zombies: Brood Tyrant, Field of the Dead, Grave Titan. Dark Confidant, Phyrexian Arena, Painlands. I'm losing life, I'm tossing cards, I'm hoping to win before I fall to pieces.
To my right, on the dining chair, GL drafts Orzhov Wipes, with the dream of Massacre Wurm triggering for lethal.
Seated on the couch to my left, ML assembles all of Judith's friends across Red, White and Black, and a casual 5 one-drops.
Demanding to sit on the chaise, CC once again tried spells matter, commenting afterward that seeing more cards made it feel easier.
We'll all face each other in a round robin.
ML finishes me in 3 games, with Judith pumping out unreasonable damage. At the coffee table CC seals the 2-0 against GL, keeping Ral busy with the Mystery Booster recursive sorcery. CC is elated to finally get a match win with spells. With the draft format we each got to see over 70% of the cube, and credit is given to that.
Spotify Jam doesn't really work super well, at least not with Google Home. Still, the queer hits persist.
In round 2 my own card harm me too much. Luckily, I have lots of them. In game 3 GL dekes through my Army of Darkness (all three zombie generators online) with Exalted Archangel pumping unblockable Gingerbrute.
ML takes out CC in 3. Butcher of the Horde does whatever it needs to, and then Falkenrath Aristocrats swoops in to end the game a turn early.
I didn't see ML's 2-0 win at the dining table over GL, but it secured the 3-0 on the night. I was too busy burying CC in zombies. Persist isn't in the cube anymore, but Exhuming Grave Titan on turn 4 is also good.
I never care about winning, but usually I want to play as well as I can. On this night though, enjoying canned cocktails, back and ribs aching from improper toddler hoisting, neighbourhood denizens screaming on the street four storeys below, I wanted to see how close I could get to the sun.
In most games I took more damage from my own cards than my opponents, and in most games I was far ahead with cards, from both the copious draw and token generation. With all my cards that asked me to discard, choices got interesting fast once I'd discarded my reanimation targets.
In retail limited, a lot of discard decisions are resolved by identifying which card is the worst. In constructed, your gameplan is a lot more scripted. Here, it often felt like card evaluation didn't offer much guidance. i needed to think about the next few turns, with that decision extremely sensitive to both game state and the matchup. I loved it, even if I didn't navigate it well.
I adore the beauty of seeing whether Dark Confidant is ending my game. I love Banishing Light exiling my Phyrexian Arena. I love chump attacking with Bob, and forcing my opponent to think about the cost of taking two damage, versus the opportunity to slow my card advantage, versus the life loss that goes along with it.
I've had a pleasant recovery in my conversational skills recently, maybe imagined, maybe not. A core goal for my evening was enjoying myself. For a long time Magic was a form of mental escapism. Not into fantasy, but in the way it's mentally all consuming. I think that's still available, but I really wanted to enjoy a beautiful evening with my beautiful friends playing a beautiful game, and I got it.

In my last post I detailed the process of my worldbuilding, but this time I want to both use better grammar and -less- spelling errors, as well as go over the actual world in my game. (also plz help me idk what to call it, the dev name is 'guarder' but that doesn't do much for me)
So today I'll go over the 6 main humanoid creature types. on a list we have
Goblins- Good aligned Elves- Law aligned Dorvs- Evil aligned Orks- Chaotic aligned Gnomes- Neutral aligned Humans- they exist
Goblins: The Gobish society is built around comunal needs, to each acording to abillity, to each according to their needs. the reasoning behind this societal structure is partially due to goblins inate need for large comunities physiologically. Before getting into the 4 parragraph anatomy of a goblin mess I've written, we can just say Goblins have 3, technically 4 sexes and a Animated plant creatures that are anteater like and eat mainly bugs and plants. For Goblins to reproduce they do need 1 Goblin of each sex to effectively create another goblin. The birthing sex goblin (Sepal, like a flowers Sepum [the bud]) can birth 4th sex goblins without the help of a female or male partner. These 4th sex goblins are actually just plants that grow into trees wich are functionally sepal sex goblins. Anyways, do to a comunal relience on eachother to preserve the Grove Cities they live in (goblins are small and fragile by nature) they have developed a society built on interpersonal reliance and Comunication, being predisposed to weild plant magics also helps them diplomatically as they are able to very cheaply produce produce. Goblins are Farmers, Diplomats, Protectors, and Lovers
Elves: Elvan society is ruled by a group of ancient undead elves that have payed off their dues to the celestials, now being *technically imortal* these Monarchic Oligarchs rule their nations with Good intentions, However, when you've been alive for more than 3 centuries it starts to become difficult to relate to your everyday subjects, especially when in your eyes keeping them "Living" through resurection is in their best interest. The elves themselves are 4 eyed mandibled insectoid? Hominids with a predisposition for comunal behavior, birthed as Larvae in the thousands, it's only natural for yound Elves to build large cities to protect their offspring. Culturally Elves find meaning in the schollarly works, as their is often no end to their lives, elves find it easiest to spend their time documenting every event in every elvish live, as to try to avoid being stuck in the missery of immortal and unending meloncolly. They are the Earth nation of this world, and being the most vast in numbers and wealth is but inevitable when you can resurect the masses at your whim. Elves are Scholars, Librarians, Soldiers, and Rebels
Orks: I've already written a bunch about Orks so you probably get alot of their culture already. Anyways, Orks have built their society on a Hedonistic Love of warmth, they are an increadably resilient and creative people, finding strength in the arts and magic, and also raiding other people's villages. These big ol' Reptilian Bros honestly just want to party, and while loosely organized into large tribal groups, they really aren't alighned with eachother outside of their shared love of warmth. Being a very broad general "Reptile" species they vary greatly in apearence. Additionally Orks are one of the two Humanoids to not have a direct connection to their extraplanar counterparts, and though they are technically alighned with Demons, they aren't evil, or poorly intentioned. their actions simply serve the Demons more than they serve themselves alot of the time. Orks are Bards, Mages, Priests, and Artists
Dorvs: The final of the aligned Humanoids, Dorves were born from Euna, a Godlike being from another plane who's immense magic corrupts the world and minds with "Oil" honestly I didn't know Phyrexians existed when I designed Euna, and Coincidentally Her story is really really similar to Yawgmoth from MTG. I think they are still very different but yeah :/. anyways, Back to Dorvs, I honestly toko alot of my design of them from MonsterGarden's Dwarf seiries, and the alchemically birthed Old Norse Myth inspired Beetle people was so perfect for what I wanted to do that I just took it. I wish I knew them personally but unfortunately I do not and can't really ask permission to use their design, so... Dorvs are Beetle like people birthed from Euna's corrupting force, while seperate from their original mother, the Dorvs have become stuck in a cycle of devastation that leaves their homes rid of recources and their people starving. they Irrationally beleive that power is the force of morality that rules the world, despite their constant search for it leaving themselves and their famillies poor and helpless while other exploitative few consolidate wealth and power withing their small groups. A practical dictatorship Rules the Dorvs, and their tunnel homes from old mines and drilling projects are the only ways they can afford to live. Creating beutiful immaculate cities on the surface world, while the poor and vulnerable fight for scraps in an underground hellscape of pollution, smog, and violence. Dorvs are Miners, Explorers, Executives, and Servants.
Those "X are X, X, X, and X" notes at the end of the parragraphs are the class types each race commonly is, not like their duty in society. its a gameplay feature for Tribal decks :)
The Final, Final, Humanoids I care to write about are Gnomes. Gnomes are not aligned with any group, being singly focussed on sciences and innovation, Gnomes often don't build or consolidate power between themselves, they just go out in search of Mystic stone to power their homes and lives, tinker with their machanical bodies, and build new gnomes as their children. While Not Purely Mechanical beings like the increadably dissimilat Automata of Autonoctan origin, Gnomes are Nearly fully Metal people of small stature and efficient design, their orgins are known to be Abberant, but they Have lived in this world for as long as any other humanoid. Look Up "Esper Sentinal mtg" and you'll get a pretty good idea of what a Gnome is meant to look like. Gnomes are Inventors, Scientists, Cooks, and Merchants
its hard to be entirely original with your Ideas, even my Orks aren't the first of their kind in Gaming or Fantasy, but Being able to still create unique iterperetations of these clasic Fantasy Peoples and monsters (we'll get to thos later :) Isn't Impossible, Hopefully these 5 Are likeable and fun so yeah enjoy.
also I know at least 5 people saw my last post and didnt get anyone else with it sooo. yall are still it.

“Hard to wield a blade with just those other fingers…or your off-hand. But…”
The paladin again swung her sword, severing the rest of the Phyrexian’s fingers, as well as his entire other hand, prompting the metal man to screech even louder.
“…you can’t be too careful.”
As the Phyrexian fled, the attacker gave her sword a confident spin before deftly sliding it back into its sheath.
“Cause for reflection…”
The cavalier paused as she heard the sound of a horse approaching from behind her. She wheeled around just in time to see a knight in black armor draw close, riding atop a dark horse.
“A fellow knight!” smiled the paladin, as she bowed in a polite curtsy.
“The pleasure is mine!” chimed the dark knight. “And a relief, too, to know that chivalry is not yet dead, even in this chaotic time.”
The paladin’s eyes widened in pleasant surprise. “Likewise! I am Paladin Sade. An absolute pleasure to make your acquaintance.”
“Syr Caitlyn,” the black knight greeted in turn.
The sky suddenly grew dark above the two knights. The sinister portals in the sky began to shrink. Caitlyn and Sade both adopted expressions of alarm.
“If…if you ever find yourself on Eldraine…somehow…do feel free to stop by Castle Locthwain and ask after me. We’ll do lunch, or maybe…a dance?”
Sade gave her new acquaintance an eager nod. “I think I would like that very much. And likewise, if you ever find yourself on Belenon, come find me! I would love to break bread with someone as lovely as you…”
The knights hesitated.
“Are you…thinking what I’m thinking?” Caitlyn asked.
“I think so,” Sade nodded. “But therein lies the question: do you go with me, or I with you?”
Before either knight could speak again, a third portal opened up in the middle distance. The two knights stared at the new anomaly with surprise.
“Well, that was convenient,” Caitlyn smirked. “What do you say?”
“I say, let’s go!” Sade smiled. “Let’s…run away together!”
A pause.
“…What?”
“Er, nothing,” Caitlyn mused. “Let’s go!”

[I’m a little bitter that neither of the arts for Run Away Together really fit with this one.]
