#this post is a placeholder for a meta i'm writing which compares their character arcs and argues they have much more in common than not #i am SO OVER people acting like Eärien is a bad person for not having faith in current leadership #and also annoyed by them treating valandil as 'the good one' in his response to the loss in the southlands #they are equally motivated by grief and loss #but their experiences differ quite a bit #earien has lost every single member of her family #they have either died or left her (in case of elendil this is long standing emotional neglect)#her worst fears came true and still her father is not there for her or listening to her #so naturally she turns elsewhere as she seeks justice #and valandil isn't making 'right' choices so much as he's stood by leaders who share his specific trauma and have supported him personally #anyway i love them both and i refuse to let them be pitted against each other #rings of power #earien #valandil #elendil critical #i love him but he's objectively not a great father to Eärien in the context of the show #i actually do have more to say...later #ANYWAY #rop op #my edits

#web weaving #sort of?#i never feel like my edits really fit #they're more like collages #anyway...me on my island with the one other tudor fan that liked AB 2021 lol #'our expectations were low but holy fuck' sounds like a lot of consternation about a pretty...solid script?#what i loved most about it was moments like the above #the ability to summarize really complex dynamics borne of circumstance #in such a way that you can believe in the world and it serves as its own 'previously on' that a miniseries inherently lacks #esp when it only covers five crucial months #tl; dr there's a lot of smugness evident in many books of this genre #when it comes to anne's attitude towards her stepdaughter #bcus she was quote proven wrong unquote; becaues mary got quote the last laugh unquote...#when really. as per the quotes i've been posting #it doesn't seem like mary's reconciliation with her father was the idyll many have made it #thus we have anne's letter #and offer. knowing that others are offering her better futures #but saying this is the best future you could have. limited time only.#and it seems the future proved her right; not wrong (at least the immediate future)#bcs while matters; had she accepted; might not've been substantially better than they were under the auspices of a 'more gentle' stepmother #it also doesn't really seem like they would have been substantially worse #anne was right that her enemy's supporters wanted her disgraced and/or dead. she was right in that they wanted elizabeth disgraced #and/or dead. she couldn't have predicted what happened to herself in the exact matter it did- mainly bcus it was unprecedented #but it seems she had a pretty clear view of what mary was doing: playing both sides. attempting to ingratiate herself to her father while #also conspiring against him. and she knew it would have been better to have her on side #(and in a more jaundiced view: have her where she could watch what she was doing; who she was seeing)#but perhaps underestimated how impossible it would be to get her there in the first place #('on side' ; that is. not at court. although probably not that either. with the conditions she demanded)#but her fears of mary were not paranoia. they seem to have been grounded in realism #and a clear view of the situation at home and abroad

While replaying BG2, I had sudden moment of inspiration regarding a headcanon on how my Durge could be elven while tying it back to the first games (could also apply to half-elven). Throwing ideas around: Back in BG2 Irenicus tried to join the Seldarine by draining/fusing himself with the Tree of Life, an avatar of Rillifane Rallathil, claiming his divinity for himself and becoming a god... The act of draining the tree also had the side effect of killing and draining the life out of every elf in the city of Suldanesselar, but hey.

The second time he did this he had the stolen soul of a Bhaalspawn, which means that for a time the essence of Bhaal, the essence of an elven god, and the divine essence of Corellon/Elven-ness were all intermingled in an act of mass murder. Titans can be created entirely by accident; it could be possible for some of the divine essence of the Seldarine/Rilifane to be carried back to Bhaal, or even for Durge to have been born as a consequence of Irenicus' attack on the Tree.

There were these things, parasites formed from dark magic that the elves didn't recognise that Irenicus used to drain the essence from the tree (they were also kind of cute, imo, but that's beside the point): if those were, in some roundabout fashion, the "flesh" of Bhaal, slain, then reanimated and shaped into elven form by the stolen divine essence of one of the Seldarine... it would put Durge's birth in 1369, probably sometime in Kythorn (June-ish).

... It also sort of makes Durge part tree and maybe gives them two or three parents (Bhaal and Rillifane, and maybe Irenicus if you want to be cruel).

Also might make Queen Ellesime their half-sister or something (I'm not entirely clear on how she's related to the Leaflord, just that she's descended from him).

The Seldarine probably wouldn't be terribly comfortable with such a child existing (Sehanine might make an attempt at kindness as she does with Eilistraee and Shevarash, but when things don't fit into their ideal, things get very uncomfortable in this family). The elves wouldn't be keen on them either once/if they worked out what the infant was, what with them being both a reminder of a horrific and traumatic crime against them, and also a Bhaalspawn. They don't like those: "None of the elven forest folk want to be near me." - Charname, after being ushered out of Suldanesselar and out into a world where Bhaalspawn are being subjected to witch hunts, shortly after saving said elves and their city. Even if they are an elf.

#The Leaflord owes the Lord of Murder over a century's worth of child support.#Astarion can possbily enjoy rubbing his filthy mormhaor hands over a bastard child of the Seldarine in my canon #Irenicus might quality as a third father #This is not what Larian intended: I do not care I am in love with this explanation now #Updating Vel's backstory to include homelessness in Athkatla after too many incidents #His tendency to be drawn to nature and Ranger abilities also take on another layer #Might change him from Sun Elf to Wood or Green Elf though: makes more sense for Rillifane #Unfortunately this means I have to spend time trying to work out what to do with the racism all over the Sy-Tel'Quess lore #/durge #babbling #bg2 spoilers #long post

I have a thought rolling around in my head about how fandom has a very rigid, very bland, very one-dimensional idea of what a ‘good’ parent looks like, and how this vision is entirely fantasy and wish-fulfillment

#like they come off as soooo ‘I wanted my parents to be supportive in everything I did and never get mad ever no matter what’#and like… that’s not a person doing right by their child that’s an fantasy to make you feel like everything about you is good #you’re imagining robots that pat you on the head and call you good all the time #those aren’t PEOPLE #parents are people #which- and I’m sorry people don’t know this- but you would know if you had a positive healthy relationship with any kind of parental figure #and it gets me cause I think I write feanor as a very positive kind of father #but Ive gotten SO MANY comments going ‘oh I don’t like bad dad fenaor but your stuff-‘ and I’m just like ???#I don’t write him as a bad dad! the fanart nattie drew for me is from their c-support!! the gist of it is that xander's employing a similar punishment to soleil as he did to laslow for excessive flirting :3 but as they're working in xander's office, they both end up falling asleep, hence the little scene in the art <3

the rest of the support is about soleil lying through her teeth about how she totally isn't flirting anymore so she doesn't get in trouble again, and xander completely seeing through her lie and doing a dad-thing of trying to make her come clean herself instead of directly calling her out !!
