Ok, just back from the live action The Little Mermaid.

And may I confidently say?

Best live-action Disney adaptation yet.

True, a low bar to clear, but this honestly felt like a movie and a love story, and not just a cash grab.

Every single changed scene had me smiling. Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) was amazing, and Halle Bailey truly is Ariel, I want her version to become the defacto in the Disney Princesses line because she feels sweet and clever and brave above and beyond the animated version.

(No offense to Jodi Benson, I love her, but the animated version is what it was and the new Ariel is just given more room to breathe.)

I think, comparing, my child self would love the animated spectacle more…

But my adult self loves the tighter, more in depth story of the live action more.

It feels like the best kind of fan fiction, one where someone who loves the characters asks “How were they feeling here? How can I expand this?”

And gives us those glimpses.

Not perfect, but definitely enough for me to fan girl.

Speaking of which… Spoilers below the cut.

Right from the opening scene, you see this movie is taking itself and the responsibility of the story seriously. I love the development of Eric, his camaraderie with the sailors while also being a good mix of level headed (don’t just harpoon mermaids) with reckless insanity (dude, you’re a prince, please don’t laugh while dangling by one arm over open water. ah, well, i love you anyway).

I can feel how much the film pulls back the special effects budget, especially making the introduction of Triton’s daughters basically a business meeting instead of the grand performance, but the filmmakers were smart enough to make the change work. I like the idea of each daughter being “manager” of a specific sea under daddy’s “CEO,” and it was a great excuse to give diversity to each sister.

Plus, I loved their banter/interaction while cleaning the shipwreck, they felt natural and I wish we could have had more time with them.

Speaking of natural!

As a writer I was listening to the exposition, and in my opinion it was exceptionally well done, especially for the amount they crammed into the beginning. Some of it was on-the-nose, but that was restricted to Grimsby, Sebastian, and Ursula, and felt character appropriate in each context.

There was an eye for why the character is saying something - “Am I supposed to tell the Queen her son died, and on his birthday?”; “A shipwreck brought you to us, and now a shipwreck almost took you away, I can’t stand this anymore!”

I didn’t fee like making Eric an adopted orphan of the royal family was necessary, but I loved both Jonah’s and Noma Dumezweni’s performances enough that I accept the filmmakers wanting to justify things and they do tie it in to Eric’s expanded character.

And that is 👌👌👌 he’s so sweet and adorkable and they manage to make his longing to see the world beyond his island mesh with Ariel’s longing for the surface world without it feeling forced.

You see them shyly come together over their shared feelings of isolation and longing for something they’ve only been able to glimpse, not experience.

Turning the ideas that Ursula is King Triton’s sister and Ariel’s mother was killed by humans into not just canon, but pertinent plot points, was excellent.

I wish we could have known more about her mother, but can I say I’m glad it was never revealed Ursula was actually responsible? I suspected that when it was clear Ursula had been banished around the time of the death, but it works so much better than it really was just one human that traumatized King Triton, and him having to overcome his hatred of humanity as a whole despite his lose.

Ursula pulling out the “I’m your Aunt, ‘Daddy’ has hurt me so much by refusing to understand me, too” was genius.

It especially helped with the fact that Ariel was going to refuse to sacrifice her entire life (realism!!) only to give in because of her anger in a moment of spite towards her father (realism!!!), especially with seeing their relationship and knowing that Ariel’s fear of being enclosed under her father’s constant watch was probably accurate.

As a song, “For the First Time” isn’t particularly special.

Including Ariel actively doubting her decision to come to land? Brilliant.

The entire day out and “Kiss the Girl” sequence is perfection, fight me.

Grimsby being an active shipper on deck?? 😍

I personally prefer Eric being the one to steer the ship in the climatic fight, but the detail of Ariel steering it because she’d witnessed him trying to save the ship in the beginning was nice symmetry.

The animal companions were done very well in my opinion: Scuttle was better handled than in the animation to me, Sebastian was perfect and they did a great job humanizing his design with his eyes compared to previous outings, and Flounder was - there. With Max.

Almost feel you could have cut the last two out and lost nothing except babbling to Triton at the beginning, Eric coulda saved the shipboy at the beginning…

(And yes Flounder’s “realistic” design does not improve in context, fortunately he’s on screen less than the animated characters with charisma)

I love the expansion of the prejudices on both sides; I wish it had been better explored at the end, but Queen Selina’s speech to her son about how his feelings for Ariel despite her being a “sea creature” (her initial fearful reaction) was beautiful.

Brain’s trickling down, it was an early showing, but you get the point.

It’s well worth watching the movie, and I’m up for rambling if anyone else is! 😊

First she called her partner again, but it only went to voicemail. Adrien cringed as Ladybug grew more unnerved by the lack of response. “I have a plan, but I need Chat Noir to make it work!” Well, if you’d stop being so overprotective of me maybe I could get away from you and transform and this would be over in a few minutes. Adrien had to keep his mouth shut about that, but he was getting more irritated by the second. The akuma was just getting closer. “Okay, so I’ll have to come up with a new plan.” She began while reaching into her yoyo. “Adrien Agreste, this is the Miraculous of the…” Adrien stopped her. “Ladybug, I’m not sure I’m the right fit for a Miraculous.” “What are you talking about? Sure she’d given out a lot of Miraculous, but she hadn’t given him one twice. “What are you talking about! It was just the snake, there’s probably a Miraculous that suits you better.” “It wasn’t just the Snake Miraculous!” Adrien took a deep breath. “I was Cat Walker and that didn’t work out either!” There was a nudge from Plagg under his over shirt but Adrien ignored it. “What?” Ladybug closed her yoyo and stared at him slack jawed. Her eyes scanned his features. A gloved hand reached up and traced the curve of his cheek. “Uh, Ladybug? What are you doing?” Adrien asked, blushing a little at the contact. Another loud crash from the akuma thankfully brought her senses back to the task at hand. “You were Cat Walker?" “Yes?” “Well, I was told that Cat Walker was actually Chat Noir.” A nervous laugh bubbled up from Adrien’s throat. “Oh, you had heard he was Chat Noir, huh?” “Yeah.” She realized she had been staring Adrien down and blushed. “Well, um you see…” Adrien was fully prepared to launch into some long explanation to cover his identity but Ladybug just grabbed his hand and lifted it. “We need to talk about this later.” She looked directly at his silver ring, before rubbing her thumb over it. “Right now, I need you, Chaton." Plagg no longer felt the need to hide and flew up beside Adrien’s head. “Yeah, so maybe I should have told you that I told her Chat Noir was Cat Walker.” Plagg shrugged. “This is too much, we can talk later!” Ladybug said. The blond gulped, a certain fear crossing his mind, but then shook his head and nodded. At this point the ground was shaking and the akumatized person, who looked very much like a humanoid alligator, was right around the corner. Ladybug held up her Lucky Charm frisbee and looked around them. Her Ladybug vision highlighted Adrien this time. “This is a good spot. I can bounce the frisbee off the walls and into their face.” “And I’ll slide underneath, jump up and Cataclysm the backpack where the akuma is. A purrfect plan M’lady.” Adrien nodded immediately knowing what to do. This threw Ladybug for a loop. Her partner was good at practically reading her mind when it came to plans, but seeing Adrien do it made her blink a couple of times. She felt her cheeks heat up as well, and hoped he didn’t notice the blush. Adrien’s head tilted at her response. His response wasn’t anything out of the ordinary, for Chat Noir. Then he touched the collar of his shirt and chuckled. “Right, time for a wardrobe change. Plagg, Claws out!” Right before her eyes, Adrien became Ladybug’s partner. She couldn’t help the gasp that escaped her. “Ready!” He offered snapping her back into the plan. Ladybug nodded. ————————————————- They defeated the akuma according to plan. Ladybug asked Chat Noir to meet her on a rooftop after she recharged to transform again. After a nervous talk with Tikki, she finally swung up to meet him. “I’m sorry.” Chat Noir said as soon as she landed, his voice full of emotion. “I didn’t mean to reveal my identity like that. I didn’t know Plagg had told you that Cat Walker was me… I mean Chat Noir me. If I have to give up the ring, I don’t know what I’ll do. Plagg and I just, I don’t want to lose him. I know I messed up before and gave it up but I shouldn’t have, it would be such a big mistake. Now I’m here and you know my identity and I know you didn’t want to know. But you’re the Guardian and—“ “Woah, Kitty.” She held up both hands. “I am NOT losing you as a partner. That ring belongs with you." “Oh. Well, I mean you said you wanted to talk and I just assumed.” Chat fidgeted with the ring on his finger. “You keeping your Miraculous is a part of this talk. You’re the one I want by my side.” “Even now? Knowing who I am?” Ladybug paced away from him. She was trying to walk off some nervous energy, but she was also trying to hide the blush on her cheeks. When she paced back towards him she could barely take his nervous kitten eyes. The movement to hug him was automatic. He tensed in her arms in surprise, before returning the hug. “Especially now that I know.” She reassured him. His body relaxed in her arms and she felt some tension leave her own shoulders. She released him and sat down on the roof, in no hurry to rush this conversation. She gestured to the spot directly in front of him and he sat down on the secluded rooftop. “Since Plagg was a big part of this reveal, I think he should be part of the conversation.” “Yeah?” Chat smiled. “Claws in.” “Now, how was I supposed to know that he would tell you that his civilian self was Cat Walker?” Plagg began. “It’s crazy how things worked out.” Adrien laughed. Adrien’s laugh. Chat Noir’s laugh. Ladybug’s mind was putting together these two pieces of a whole person. Slowly things clicked into place. “I’m sorry I ever made you feel isolated.” Adrien lifted an eyebrow at that. “Ladybug, it’s okay. We’ve become closer as partners. We’ve swapped Miraculous for a week. We talk a lot more now. I don’t feel that way anymore. Every relationship has its ups and downs. I know my place is by your side.” She blushed more at that. “I-I mean as your partner of course!” He felt the need to clarify. “It’s okay I mean what you know!” Ladybug pinched the bridge of her nose. “I know what you mean. It’s just that I feel really bad for making you feel that way. Especially since I know you deal with being isolated and pushed away in real life. That sort of feeling never should have come from me as your partner.” He glanced at his kwami and then back to her. “So, you know how my father is? I didn’t think it was all that public. At least, not how he keeps me locked away most of the time, unless it’s for a company thing. Thankfully he does let me go to school. Although, I think Nathalie had more to do with that decision.” “Oh…I mean I’m sure the public doesn’t know that so much. I would imagine it would be pretty bad if everyone knew just how intense your father was with you when it comes to having control over your schedule. It’s just I know a lot about you because you’re kind of famous and as a hero I do try to check up on people who have been targeted by akumas, yeah, targeted by akumas! And you are also a public figure so it’s more likely for you to be targeted and you know that’s the reason I know about you feeling isolated because I’ve checked up on you and I—-“ “Ladybug.” He said quietly, but it put a stop to her rambling. “You know me. Don’t you? I mean Adrien me?” “Who? Me? How would I? I mean I’m just a superhero doing her job.” She kept looking everywhere but at him. “Please, look at me.” He grabbed her hand softly. When her eyes met his she blushed. This is your partner. Silly. Goofy. Chat Noir. Calm down. But you’ve been feeling different things towards him lately and now you’ve realized he’s Adrien Agreste. Ladybug’s heart was beating fast inside her chest. She was sure if her partner was transformed he’d be able to hear it from where he sat. “I won’t ask you to reveal your identity to me if you aren’t ready.” He assured her. “I mean you are the Guardian. He wasn’t sure what that meant for their partnership. They were friends. Sure he had a crush on her, but their relationship was more than that. He felt comfortable with her. Now that his identity had been revealed she was acting nervous and frazzled. “Oh boy.” Plagg rolled his eyes. “You’re going to be fighting alongside each other every day. Haven’t you already seen what happens when you are too smitten and distracted?” “Plagg!” Adrien scolded. “Leave her alone! …Wait. Smitten?” Ladybug’s shoulder’s sagged. “Yes, okay. When you were Cat Walker, you were so perfect! Too perfect! And I-It was distracting and I couldn’t even get my plans together.” Adrien sighed. “I’m nowhere near that perfect. Cat Walker is just me when I’m trying to live up to unrealistic expectations. It took a lot of planning to become that as a hero. Cat Walker doesn’t come naturally to me.” “But look at you!” She blurted out. “You-you’re gorgeous!” “What?” Adrien’s eyes widened. “But-but not just that. With you being a rich and famous gorgeous model, it would be easy to assume you’re conceited and superficial. She peaked through them cautiously. “I-I think I said too much.” Adrien stood, clearly having too much energy from the revelation to remain where he was and started pacing. “So, if I’m Buttercup. That means that you’re Marinette. If Marinette is Ladybug, that means I’m the other boy. Which means, Ladybug has been turning me down for another boy who was ME. All this time?” He pointed to himself as if he couldn’t believe what he was saying. “Me? Really?!” Ladybug couldn’t help but laugh at his dramatics and it eased her nervousness. “Yes, really. That’s why I always trip over my words with you.” “Wow.” He ran his hand through his hair, which just made it messy as he continued to walk around the rooftop. “I thought it might have been because you didn’t like me.” “No! It was the opposite.” Ladybug’s nerves continued to calm down looking at Adrien’s now messy hair and also the blush she noticed on his face. “I know you have a crush on Ladybug me, but Marinette me is so different and clumsy——“ He cut her off and walked closer to where she was sitting. “And creative, and kind, and intelligent and incredible. Ladybug is you and so is Marinette.” “Where’d you get that bit from.” Plagg jeered. “Plagg helped me realize that, as Adrien and as Chat. In and out of the mask, I’m still me.” Adrien gestured towards his kwami. “It’s true for you too. But I was afraid of what it would do to our friendship!” “You two are pathetic.” Plagg happily nibbled on some cheese Adrien had brought, but there was no bite in his words. “Maybe, but I’m glad we’ve sorted through so much.” Adrien rubbed the back of his neck. “Uh, if you still want me to back off I mean I can. I don’t want to ask you out if you’re not interested.” “What? No, I thought we just established that we have figured things out?” “But you like Adrien me? On the other hand, you’ve turned down Chat Noir a lot…” Ladybug cringed at the fact, she’d never live it down. “The only reason I turned Chat Noir down was because of Adrien! In fact lately it’s been harder and harder to convince myself that I didn’t have a crush on my partner.” “So, do you have a crush on your partner?” He fidgeted with his ring. In a burst of confidence, Ladybug stood. They had overcomplicated everything for so long. Adrien had reassured her, but now it was his turn to be reassured. “I do. But it’s not just a crush. There’s no one in this world I trust more than you. I’m sorry that the identity rule got in the way of that. Adrien you mean the world to me, but so does Chat Noir. Knowing you are the same person just feels like my heart was never torn in the first place. I fell for Adrien when you gave me that umbrella, but I fell for Chat Noir slowly. With a trust and a companionship that blossomed more and more the better I got to know you. You’re incredible. I love you.” His cheeks burned and his eyes felt misty. “I love you too, M’lady. So, so much. Even more now that I see the whole picture.” She wrapped her arms around his waist and hugged him and he returned her embrace. “M’lady, I love you. I love you. I love you! I’ll say it as many times as I need to. You are incredible in AND out of the mask.” With her whole heart, she believed he meant it. “Spots off.” Her transformation fell and she loosened their hug. Tikki watched quietly trying to stay silent in her excitement at seeing the two finally together. “And you should know that I love you.” She looked at his lips. “Cat puns and all.” He noticed her gaze and laughed as his eyes darted to her lips. “I’m wondering if you have the same a-meow-zing idea as I do.” “Ha! Maybe, but I know my partner has two kisses from me he doesn’t remember. Then she kissed him like her life depended on it, her other hand reaching up into his hair. He pulled her closer by the waist and returned the kiss with just as much passion. Hinawa and the rest of the cast so far are very spot on, though. Rekka was also close to what I imagined him, too. If not better than expected. No complaints here. 😌

However, I’m a little worried for the rest of the VAs that will come up. Who did the casting anyway? 😒😬

Ah, btw, I don’t have internet since yesterday and I don’t know when it’ll be back. We had to change the router because the hardware was old and the lines were ‘upgraded’. Bro! The lines are so ‘upgraded’ that the router doesn’t even connect to the phone line, let alone internet!!! Fuck the 80€ monthly fee!!! Give me back my telecommunications!!! 😭

i’m not sure :’) i guess maybe i have a rough idea? i’d love to work in the entertainment industry (like film or books) and maybe have a marketing or pr job? im taking more practical courses in january, which will be filmmaking and editing so hopefully by the end of this school year ill have a better idea of which direction i want to go in!

i adore london! the trip we took there earlier in the year was one of my favourite experiences i’ve ever had, i completely fell in love with the city. i really hope i end up doing my postgrad there but i was planning on going to plymouth first, they have one of the best marine biology programs in the world. i’m doing a bit of everything but right now i want to work in turtle or penguin conservation. i already have a bit of experience because the aquarium where i work has a great program in both of those fields so i guess i’ll decide once i have more experience working with the animals

the way things are going i’m probably also gonna live on campus 😭 it’s not necessarily a bad thing but dorms on campus literally cost almost half of the school fees, it’s insane. and they’re definitely not worth that much money!! and like you said, all of the student accommodation makes you pay for your laundry and some of the places even make you bring your own kitchen appliances?? like what first year student is gonna own a microwave??? but i’m not done looking yet so there’s still hope lol. have you found a new place yet?

Bamboo Rice and Leona Kingscholar.

One thing is for sure, he likes strong people. Hey! He lives in the jungle with only animals as a company before meeting his master attendant.

Leona pretty much earns his respect with a fight. Although the fight ended with a tie. He is also pretty chill when he knows about Leona's feelings towards his master attendant.

"Oh? You need my help to woo master Attendant?" Bamboo Rice asks and Leona nods.

"Hmph. I just need you to create some opportunities for me to get closed to Y/n without that annoying food souls interference." Leona said with a flick of his tails.

"Okay!"

"Hm? You sure?"

"Yep. Oh? Is that Master Attendant? MASTER ATTENDANT! THIS LEONA IS HARBORING A FEE- HMPH?!"

Leona pretty much jumps from his spot and tackles Bamboo Rice before Y/n even see them. Maybe Leona should rethink again before involving this simpleton Food soul.

Tubbo

This man definetly visits your zoo every chance he gets. He loves seeing all the animals you have, especially the bees. 

He has brought Micheal with him, and it has been chaos

“Ah, Tubbo! Good to see you again! You know the fee for petting the animals and walking around in the pens.” You say as you see him walking behind you in your perifreal vision. You were currently watering the flowers in front of the admission area. As you turn around, you see him. The small zombie piglin that you know as micheal. “Yep, and I brought a certain someone.” Tubbo says as he hands you 2 diamonds. “Oh my god! Micheal! And Tubbo, you know im messing with you. I don’t charge friends.” You say as you pick up Micheal and give tubbo his diamonds back. You start walking in to your zoo, and tubbo follows quickly. You take micheal to the cow pen, and he jums out of your arms and onto one of the cows. “Bessy! Micheal, you can’t jump onto her like that she’s pregnant!” You grab micheal, hand him to tubbo, and rub Bessy’s head. “I’m sorry Bessy, he didn’t know you were pregnant. I’ll give you extra treats tonight, don’t worry.” You give Bessy one more pat, and then head back over to tubbo and micheal, who have moved over to the fish tank. You notice that Micheal is trying to climb over, and you shake your head. Chaos child.

Tommy

This man is one of your biggest supporters. Ever since he heard you were trying to build the zoo, he would always sneak out of meetings and his duties to help you out

Sometimes when Tommy knew things would be extra violent or that he’d be gone for a while, he’d drop henry off with you. He knew that you would take good care of Henry, and that you’d listen to him spill his heart out to you about how scared he is

“Hey....uh....y/n?” You heard from behind you. You know that it was tommy, as he’d called you earlier saying that he was gonna drop off Henry because of the coming war. “Hey toms. You here to drop off Henry?” You say as you turn around. He nodded, but still looked a little bit off. It looked like he was trying to make himself as small as possible. “Do you wanna talk about it Toms?” You ask, knowing he does. “Y-yea. Could we go inside the aquarium with the dolphins after me put the Big Man Henry away?” “Of course big man. Let’s get to stepping.” You say as you grab Henrys lead and take him to his personal pen.

Ranboo

Whenever he heard you built a zoo, he wrote it down in his memory book so he wouldn’t forget

 When Dream is being extra manipulative, or he’s having a bad day, he comes to visit and just....sits with a different animal everytime.

You were going to check on the chickens because it was feeding time. They have their pen away from the others because they get a little....violent. Of course tommy chose the most violent chickens. Right as you were about to enter the pen, you saw Ranboo. He seemed to be holding Vex, one of your white chickens who had a spot of brown oh his head. “Oh uh, hey Ranboo? Fair warning, they bite.” You say as Ranboo puts down Vex. “They seem *sniffle* to like me.” He says. That’s when you realized he was crying. At this pint you were in the pen and had sat down next to him. “I’m gonna guess you went to visit dream today?” You say as you hold your arms out as an invitation for a hug. “Yea. I know I shouldn’t, but I just can’t stop going.” He says, burying his face in your shoulder. The chickens have now shoved themselves in every spot on you and ranboo they could. Some were in your laps, sitting on your feet, and in the space between your torsos. “Well, you weren’t joking, they really seem to like you.” You say as ranboo peaks out from your shoulder. “Ranboo, you can keep crying into my shoulder. Tell me everything you can remember ok?” You say as Ranboo tears up again. You know he’s been crying for a while because he has intense burns in tracks under his eyes.

I just finished Inazuma and I have words

TL;DR: Hate the story, mixed on characters, love the design and tired of being treated like a 4-year-old with a learning disability.

SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT

Let’s start with what I like.

Inazuma is absolutely beautiful. I’ll admit Inazuma hits a lot of aesthetic points for me. All the islands are different enough to feel unique but they still look like they are a part of the same land. There are a lot of secrets to discover through just exploring. Each island has a world quest to help it (make it less hostile towards you) so it very much feels like you are saving Inazuma from itself.

The puzzles are alright.

I like the cubes that rotate, I always put in the effort to figure them out properly.

Hate the ones that don’t rotate, they just aren’t engaging enough for me, so I just hit them at random and hope for the best.

The glowing floor tiles were fun, once you actually realized what they wanted you to do. A little bit too easy if I’m honest.

The electro compass isn’t really much of a puzzle, more of a fetch the nearest electrograna quest.

Those little pillars that require an electro connection are kinda boring to me, again not much of a puzzle, the hardest part is finding both pillars.

I love the new electro seelie, kinda hard to follow the jittery thing in certain parts but they make a nice contrast to the regular seelies.

I’m very much mixed on characters.

Yoimiya is adorable. She is so bright and bubbly. What little game play we had with her was fun and I love her over the top style of fighting. Kinda disappointed she’s another pyro archer but I do admit it fits her character well. It was also wonderful seeing her just settle down and be quiet, just be a part of that moment that obviously meant a lot to her. It’s always nice to see that bubbly, energetic character have that one quiet thing, ya know. Kinda funny it’s fireworks, of all things, for her.

Gorou I like, from what little we’ve seen of him. My man killed a dude with his thighs so I’m down. I do find it kinda ridiculous that a resistance general has his whole damn belly exposed. There is also something about his voice that just does not fit. I cannot for the life of me put my finger on what exactly it is. Could be the tone itself, could be just voice acting. It sort of feels like the VA is trying to sound deeper than he actually does.

Sangonomiya Kokomi, mixed. I like her design, she looks like some sort of mystical priestess. Again something about the voice is jarring. I expected her to sound sort of airy, like she isn’t 100% present, like she’s seeing something we can’t. TBH she reminds me of Luna from HP for some reason. 

Yae Miko, I was interested because of her design. She sounds very arrogant and up her own ass, which would have been fine...if she hadn’t given us that god-awful line. “...I have high hopes for you, child. Don’t disappoint me.” Dear lord I wanted to punt her off the mountain. Or fucking what! Also she’s some bigshot priestess of the Sacred Sakura and yet she can’t do her damn job properly. Why couldn’t her arrogant ass come down from her high perch and cleanse the stupid roots? Why did the traveler have to do that shit?

Baal looks dead inside. Booba sword is overrated, get a life. I want a remach! And no cutscene shenanigans this time!

Kujou Sara seems like one of those ‘honor above all else’ characters. Those are either hit or miss with me. You have my attention for now. Also what are those shoes woman?! I’d rather you wear those leg-killing, needle point stilettoes instead of those Wish gag shoes. How in the name of all that is holy can you run in those?!

Thoma, I like him. At first I thought we were gonna get another Childe incident, but Thoma is too much of a innocent puppy to pull anything that horrible. To me he fits a fox a lot better than Childe does. Childe is a dingo and I stand behind that.

Kamisato Ayaka...hate her. At first I was neutral on her. Nothing about her design really spoke to me, but I was willing to wait and see. But then miHoYo started to violently push her friendship at us. We are totally friends now, this is the first time you see my face, but we are so totally friends now. And during her story quest everyone was like “Ah, you are so good Ayaka. You are so nice Ayaka. You are so perfect Ayaka. We all love you so much Ayaka. And oh, how could a mere merchant like myself...” Ew, go away. This is the first time I’m actively not pulling on a character banner. Normally I pull even if I’m not particularly interested in a character, because you never know how good their gameplay is until you take them out in the map. But I think I’ll be skipping this one. No thanks.

And now, the worst part, the story.

We’ve been hearing about the situation in Inazuma for a long time. There has been also a lot of talk about how hard it is to get there. About the wall of thunderclouds that surround the islands. So to have it cut to black and then voila Inazuma, feel just so cheap.

I was expecting something. An animation. A struggle. A quest. A minigame. At least show us the horrible weather! Something! Anything!

Hell if they wanted to be assholes about it they could have made it so that if the player fails at this point the ship is damaged, you return to Liyue and have to wait until tomorrow for the ship to be repaired. No Inazuma for today. That sure as hell would have raised the stakes.

The next complaint I have is with Yurika, the 2 milion mora processing fee girl. Later on Thoma mentions that the agency people see the fees as easy money, so her attitude doesn’t make much sense. After all someone like her would want to extract as much money as she can, but you still want the people to be able to pay that.

So it would make more sense to me if she was overly friendly and asked way too many questions. She’d need to get a much information as she can and after all the previous hostility people would be very open with her. So she’d be able to quickly find out why someone is here, what they are selling and roughly how much money they’d be able to pay. A merchant selling expensive silk would have more many than a regular ore merchant. So she’d be able to extract as much money as she could.

“I know this is a lot of money, especially for something so simple, but there is nothing I can do about it. I’m so very sorry.” And people wouldn’t say anything bad to her because she’s the first friendly face they see in Inazuma.

The stealth mission was just god-awful and I hope we never have to do that nonsense again.

Getting off of Ritou was a bit janky at the end, Chisato should have had a better reason for coming along. But I’m honestly just glad we didn’t get out the usual way...getting stuffed in a crate and smuggled out.

As a side note, I’m getting really tired of characters overexplaining things to me, especially Paimon. Dear lord, not everything has to be said, you can leave me to come to my own conclusions and solutions. Just please, who cares if a few player struggle for a bit, you don’t have to hold my hand through the whole thing.

Ayaka’s three were...ugh. It was basic emotional manipulation. Oh no this guy forgot about the love of his life and he’s been waiting for decades. And oh how sad this guy was so good and he helped these people so much but now he can’t remember. And oh the tragedy this guy forgot his life goal and is now hunted by the demons of the past. Oh the humanity! 

And it did not work. Know why? Because I have no emotional investment in any of these people, in this land. What is happening to the vision bearers in Inazuma is tragic, true, but that doesn’t make me want to overthrow the government. I don’t live here. I just got here. I wanna ask a question or two and then move on. None of this concerns me.

I was so happy when the traveler just flat out refused to start a revolution. And then we had to go and meet some people and immediately I knew this was going to be some oh noes the tragedy moments and then we would agree to help them.

It’s so forced.

Wanna know what would have been better?

Just as we are leaving the Kamisato estate Thoma catches up with us. And he tells us he gets it. We are an outsider and this doesn’t concern us. He was hopeful but he expected the denial. We shouldn’t hold it against Ayaka.

He joins us as a guide because he knows of the people we have to meet.

And so as we help these three we also get to know Thoma. We find out he was an outsider too. He got in just before the worst of it started and then he was stuck in Inazuma. He lost someone to the Vision Hunt. They slowly lost their mind after loosing their vision, their ambition too closely tied to their personality to continue without it (what is happening to Domon hits a little too close to home and he has to walk away, this is where we hear the story of the one he lost). And the same would have happened to him if the Kamisatos hadn't taken him in. He owes them his vision, his sanity and his life.

So this rebellion is personal for him.

At the end of the three wishes the atmosphere is somber. We tell him we understand why Ayaka fights, why he fights. We know that this is all wrong, that it should be stopped...but not by us. We came here to get a lead on our brother. And rebellion isn’t an overnight affaire and we can’t loose so much time in Inazuma.

And yeah, he expected as much. He just asks that we let Ayaka down gently. It’d be a shame if someone as idealistic and hopeful as her lost their spark.

And so we are gentle but firm with Ayaka. She looks like she wants to argue with us but Thoma shakes his head at her. So she sighs and tells us that a promise is a promise. We should come to the Komore Teahouse in a few days and she’ll have a plan for us to meet with the Shogun.

Now we can still have a character story quest with Yoimiya and we can still somehow get involved with helping Master Masakatsu, but it’s through Yoimiya instead of Ayaka.

And instead of a character story quest with Ayaka we have one with Thoma. Hell, give him a whole damn hangout event even.

You can probably guess why I’m pushing the friendship with Thoma so much.

Because. He. Gets. Kidnapped. For. The. 100th. Vision. Ceremony. 

And that would have been the perfect emotional in to get us involved in the rebellion. After all we just saw what happens to people who have their visions taken away and we are not letting that happen to Thoma, someone we just got close to.

So Baal makes it personal for us as well.

I have a few more minor complaints.

Aoi is stupid for asking for compensation after she tells us everything we needed to know because, ya know, we could have just walked away. We should have.

The whole stupid misunderstanding about the value Kurosawa’s sword holds. Kinda obvious he meant emotional value instead of monetary.

The suspicious amount of visionless NPCs and by that I mean this is the first time we have NPCs with vision. This wouldn’t have been a problem if we’ve seen NPCs with visions in Mond and Liyue.

The whole rebellion camp bit feels incredibly rushed. We just sort of lollygag over there and then there is a fight (against Sara and her stupid shoes).

Don’t make us fight Baal just to force us to lose. It would have been better if we were forced to retreat, because Thoma was injured, because there are too many soldiers for us to handle on our own. Hell, you can have a funny scene where we straight up jump off a cliff with Thoma clinging onto us and screaming bloody murder until he realizes we are slowly gliding away and he’s not about to plummet to his death.

The Sakura cleansing quest should have been voice acted.

The Mirror Maiden and Pyro Agent are totally on a date, I will not be told otherwise.
