there is a certain kind of character that will do terminal brain damage to any 14 year old of a sufficiently angsty disposition who encounters them

I have a friend who isnt like... super outspoken anti but defin holds their beliefs. DMC is their FAVORITE game series and it's consistently SO weird to me how they are able to ignore/deny the incestuousness of it all. Quote "It's WEIRD how incest is so common in this fandom, it's GROSS, nobody understands their relationship (talking abt d and v) like i do lmao". Like???? What are you gettiing at? Them saying they "understand" the brother's relationship honestly makes me kind of worried abt what they consider normal...
Yeaahhh, honestly sounds like either good old fashioned delusion or like they're making up a different canon in their head to support their interpretation/beliefs. And while that's not necessarily bad on its own, when you lose sight of what you've made up as your own hc and what's actually there and start attacking others for interacting with the source material as is, well, obviously that's not ok lol. Hope you can distance yourself from them anon, trying to keep "friends" like that is often way more trouble than it's worth.

people who characterize marcille as ‘oh that lesbian elf motivated so much by how she wants to bang her s/o’ literally don’t get it. a marcille who KNOWS shes a lesbian would be on a whole ‘nother level of “annoying about it.” insert joke about gay being a characters only trait level annoying. she still writes off her gay shit as gender envy, protectiveness, or solidarity. once she realizes , its all over. shes going to be getting into harmful intra/ter-community discourse on twitter before collapsing into a years-long disillusionment wreckage as all her online buddies either go entirely transmisogynistic or end up overcorrecting and becoming a different kinda queerscourse radical. she even takes the word ‘lesbian’ out of all her urls :-(. not because she isn’t one or its bad but bc its a painful reminder of a sense of pride that now exists only in memory. and eventually she changes it to FALINSC-💥

Frankenstein annotators vs Dracula annotators FIGHT (this Ask brought to you by the Frankenstein weekly annotator takes)
For real, there do seem to be some blisteringly cold takes going on in academic circles.
I think Frankenstein suffers more with people tending to identify harder with either Creature or Victor, and thus skewing everything the other one does in order to demonize them. They get plenty of material to work with either way, because both are extremely flawed individuals. Both are self-absorbed, make bad choices, cause harm to those around them. Both also are extremely depressed/self-hating, do not want to hurt anyone until they're well caught up in a self-perpetuating cycle of hatred, feel trapped and victimized by the other. I think a lot of the power of the book comes from being able to sympathize with both of them and spot so many moments of "if only-" while still feeling that the way things turned out was somehow inevitable. It's just ingredients of a great tragedy!
With Dracula, it feels more like people are trying to distance themselves from the characters. By reducing them to plot points, archetypes, and the like, these people stop engaging with them as characters. And as such, they try to force in negative nuance where it wasn't intended in the original, or view them only as a stereotypical Frigid Victorian Male (Jonathan) or say "this side character didn't do a lot so maybe they were secretly evil" (Quincey), or just get... super, super into horny symbolism everywhere in a way that actually saps away a lot of what makes the characters themselves. In doing so, they miss the heart of the story, which despite being a horror novel actually has some really uplifting stuff.
I haven't read tons and tons of academic takes on both books, but based on what I have read, I think those are the trends that seem to bring about some of the really weird or hostile takeaways. Getting too attached to a particular character in Frankenstein, and trying too hard not to care about the characters in Dracula. Opposite in a way, but both ending up missing a lot of heart/nuance that I think you can find in the original works.
I feel there also is an element of a kind of feedback loop in both cases. Each book has had a major impact on pop culture, but in ways which tend to diverge significantly from book canon. I do feel that some of the simplifications and reversals start out as either derivative of (Dracula must have a sympathetic backstory) or defiant to (actually, Frankenstein is the real monster) the film/pop culture versions. This as well as responding to so many other established lines of criticism and types of takes that have become almost a "standard" and which are somewhat removed from the actual canon of the page.

i say this with so much heart, one piece has more respect for mentally ill people being a dick because of trauma than i would have in that exact situation. like sanji in wci when hes fully being a massive huge wet pathetic asshole that. like. completely justified that nami reacts so negatively to that while the narrative has a lot of empathy for him because i would kill someone in real life if they did that to me. even if it was a beautiful blond haired man and i had been playing heterosexual chicken with him ever since we first met. the self control on nami there is literally neverending.
like its good that this is the case, well written narratives about mental illness should be this empathetic while fully understanding the consequences of someones actions LIKE wci. these two things are so often treated like theyre mutually exclusive but for op they're not. and i love that. but jesus. she really loves him huh.

it’s literally so important to make friends with your servers and bartenders anywhere you go as much as possible 🙏🏻 not only will it make both your day and their day better but sometimes they will give you free shots and sometimes they will start telling you gossip about their job and other diners and sometimes they will comp your fries

COACH what to do if im disabled and can't run for exercise... what the fuck do I do
ONLY DO WHAT YOU'RE CAPABLE OF, SON. IT DEPENDS ON THE REASON FOR YOUR INABILITY TO RUN. YOU MAY CHOOSE TO DO EXERCISES THAT RELY LESS ON YOUR LOWER BODY, SUCH AS SIT-UPS (WHICH CAN ALSO BE DONE STANDING BY BENDING YOUR LEGS SLIGHTLY THEN BOWING AND STRAIGHTENING AGAIN LIKE YOU WOULD REGULAR SIT-UPS IF YOU HAVE DIFFICULTIES GETTING ON THE GROUND), CHIN-UPS, PULL-UPS, DIPS, SO ON. YOU ALSO MAY CONSIDER FREE WEIGHT EXERCISES WITH SOMETHING SMALL. 1KG DUMBBELLS CAN BE BOUGHT FOR AS LOW AS 5 REÁL; THEY'RE SMALL ENOUGH TO STORE AND CAN GO A LONG WAY (BICEP CURL, ZOTTMAN CURL, FLAT DUMBBELL FLY, ARNOLD PRESS, CROSS BODY HAMMER CURL, SPIDER CURL, SCAPTION EXCERCISES, I COULD GO ON -- THESE ALL WORK EXCLUSIVELY YOUR UPPER BODY MUSCLES). MEDICINE BALLS AND KETTLEBELLS TEND TO BE MORE EXPENSIVE BUT CAN ALSO BE AN OPTION TO LOOK AT. AND FINALLY, IF THOSE AREN'T OPTIONS, STRETCHING THREE TO FOUR TIMES A WEEK FOR AT LEAST 20 MINUTES CAN HELP ALLEVIATE MUSCLE TENSION AND REDUCE PAIN AND TENSION IN THE BODY AS WELL AS INCREASE FLEXIBILITY, BALANCE BLOOD CIRCULATION AND LUCIDITY. YOU MAY WANT TO DO STRETCHES FOR YOUR LEGS REGARDLESS TO ENSURE THEY DON'T GO UNDERUTILISED
COACH... OUT❗❗💥💪💪

five oc facts
@sparkiekong tagged me a VERY veryyyyy long time ago and i'm just now getting to this tag months later (i'm so sorry 😭)
i'll tag: @thebramblewood @mangosimoothie @queeniecook @stargazer-sims @dandylion240 @jonquilyst 🤍
i just did a similar prompt for áine, who is this sim's niece, so how about facts for cathal? he's also a newbie to my sims universe, and i adore him and his personality tbh, but canon reasons make it hard for him to be included too much outside of random simblr posts like this
he is WILDLY younger than all his other siblings (like by 20 years) and was a total surprise baby. really, he's kind of a medical miracle because he was born after his mother went into menopause and was in her 40s, and no one knew he even existed until he randomly sprang into the world one august morning lmfao 💀
i think i mentioned it in one post but he's been a vegetarian for most of his life! actually, he declared himself a vegan when he was, like, six years old; he figured out what eggs and meat really were and then refused to eat animal products for decades. much to his dismay, he did have to introduce eggs and milk and whatnot back into his diet when he ran into a few nutritional deficiencies from veganism, but he's made his peace with being a vegetarian instead 🥦
he 100% does not remember his father outside of what he looked like. his dad (and aoife's younger brother) died very abruptly and super young of a heart attack when cathal was maybe three or so, and it's something that really nags at him. he's well aware there's nothing he can do about it, but he feels some strange mix of bad emotions that he never experienced a father-son bond, and that makes him 100x as serious about being a good father who'll be around a LONG time and just generally treating anyone younger than him well. he doesn't want anyone else feeling that type of loss 🥲
he actually writes an agricultural column in the local online newspaper and contributes to the county farmer's almanac lol. his big shtick is sustainability in agriculture and how new green technologies should be combined with traditional cultural approaches to the land so the earth doesn't die in, like, 10 years from excessive carbon emissions 🍃💚
he met his wife yvonne in a ballroom dance class! he was just bored one day in college and went to the class to do something new, and he immediately developed the biggest crush on the instructor. he just kept going back every week until he was brave enough to ask her out, and when he did, they hit it off. oh, and this is totally their thing - he has quite literally taken her dancing every weekend since they got together 😭😭😭

its so weird how so many people, even people on like. forums for people supposedly into names, will act like it cruel to give a child any name that isnt in the top 200 baby names for the US like having people occasionally mispronounce your kids name or remark that they've never heard of it before is the worst thing you could possibly do to them
and then some of them try to deflect against the obvious racism and xenophobia of their attitude by being like 'well of course its ok to name your kid something from your culture as long as its easy enough for the people around you to pronounce and spell' as if that makes it any better
like is being into names for you really just like . 'should i name my kid james or henry' lmao.
