i think part of what makes the IDW Sonic supporting cast so endearing is how well they fit into the franchise as a whole. like the Archie Sonic characters were created by and large to match the SatAM continuity, which was created by and large to give context to things happening in the games because it was made at a time when audiences knew shit from fuck about these characters or their world... so those characters kinda retroactively just don't mesh with the games at all. they're adjacent to an adjacency to the main franchise, so trying to imagine them existing in the tone and context of the modern games doesn't line up.
but then you look at the IDW characters, and they are entirely, wholly made to fit into the same mold and world as the games without being redundant expies of existing characters. Surge might be "another rival to Sonic", but she fits a narrative purpose Shadow, Knuckles, and Metal Sonic completely don't; the stories you can tell with Surge and Kit are unique to them, and no other characters would fit those roles. same with Tangle and Whisper; they make the world feel lived-in, remind you that things are happening and having an impact on people whenever Sonic and co. aren't onscreen.
they also have that quality that Pit has in Smash Brawl, where they feel like they have this super storied history and evolution over the course of years that we just didn't get to see. until i actually read IDW you could've 100% convinced me the IDW-originals were all updated versions of forgotten side-characters from spin-off games like Dark Brotherhood or Rivals, and i think that says a lot about how well-conceived they all are.

Sometimes I'll come upon threads or posts where a person is sharing their criticisms on something I'm a fan of and there's almost ALWAYS a person or two in the comments like "oh the [insert media/character] fans are going to kill you for this!!"
LIKE NO ACTUALLY?? I find reading opposing opinions to mine quite entertaining and potentially eye opening bc they'll offer viewpoints about my favorite movie or game I may not have considered otherwise and it's just interesting to take in tbh
tldr i don't entirely get why some people feel threatened if others don't like their favorite thing, regardless of what it is

My friends ask why I keep loving Taylor even though she dated Matty and all of that stuff and sometimes I don’t know what to say. It’s almost like Taylor is a celebrity so it’s not like she does these things to me personally but then she is so influential that sometimes it feels worse? But I don’t know what to say because I don’t feel like it compromises my real values because I wouldn’t date a racist or anything and I wouldn’t like anyone who listened to that podcast or didn’t care about POC and Taylor is just my fun interest. But my friends have a point too? Sorry Rae you don’t have to post this, I’m just rambling and I think you will understand 🤍
this might not make sense but we're literally surrounded by racism, misogyny, bigotry every day in ways that are big/overt and small/subtle. they are threaded into society. i do not expect purity from this celebrity i stan because it does not exist (in them, in myself, in society) and what i focus on is so much bigger (educating myself on intersectionality, how systems of oppression work together, how masses of people are disenfranchised, history, a better society, etc etc.)
and there is also kind of a "all sins are equal" aspect to it that i grapple with. if i must ragequit the taylor fandom due to matty, then what else should i ragequit? should i be ragequitting my friends who only date white people and never poc? should i ragequit my job, because it's run by a bunch of white people who have really silly DEI practices? what does ragequit even mean when there's still more ignorance to take its place?
like. i bet a lot people reading this have a racial "preference" while dating that excludes poc. are y'all investigating that within yourselves? trying to change it? wondering how to deal with that racism? because that kind of run-of-the-mill racism affects me way more on a day to day basis than what taylor swift does in her dating life. does that make sense?
i truly do not believe that shaming taylor into changing ANY of her behaviors will make a major difference, so long as she chooses to remain a super-popular mega-celebrity millionaire. if i thought she wanted to become an activist, or an outspoken educator, then that's a different story.
we have to pick and choose what we boycott/cancel, what we can forgive, what we don't forgive but that we acknowledge and move beyond.
not sure if that helps but it's how i think of it.

jade prides himself on his self control. he is not quite as impulsive as his brother is. so naturally it's a very difficult thing to tear down. he's got a very high tolerance for bullshit, and can balance a lot on his metaphorical plate quite comfortably. as we've seen with how well he keeps up with his classes, as well as managing the mostro lounge. AND still making enough time for himself, to do the things he wants to do.
but even jade has his limits. trying to test these, without knowing what you're getting yourself into is extremely dangerous. genuine anger for him is explosive, and it often times comes in the blink of an eye. here one moment, gone the next. as if he's trying to maintain this composure he's cultivated till the last moment.
theyre very rare anymore, but it can result in him breaking things. effectively throwing a fit ( yanno like that gif i rbd ;o ) because he isn't sure what else to do with himself. worst case scenario, it can lead to bodily harm to another, and probably someone or a couple someone's dying. fortunately, jade is very good at cleaning up his messes. he just needs a moment to cool off.
what sets jade off like this? good question. hard to say really, it's pretty much always going to be caused by another person. but it isn't necessarily going to be something like...a wrench in his plans. jade's always prepared for the unexpected. and has even admitted that he dislikes anything too predictable. i think excessive disappointment or betrayal would be big contenders here. especially the latter. no one holds a grudge better than an eel ill tell ya what...

Being bi-ace is doing those quizzes in 2005 where one of the questions asks if you like boys or girls and you choose the answer "i think everyone is a little bit bi ;P !!" because you just don't think ugly people really exist even if you don't have a crush on all of them and then you grow up and the realization hits

Sometimes I wonder what other characters would have thought of laurelin. Was she a princess who was loved by her people? Her troops? Or, was she seen as a spoiled, emotional child that no one liked. What do her brothers really think of her? Her parents? Her grandfather and aunts and uncles and cousins?
As a queen in Lindon, did people think she was a good ruler that was attempting to right her wrongs, or did they think she was a murderous kinslayer making one last desperate grab for the throne?
What about people who didn't even know her at all? What did the Teleri think of the Noldorin Princess Laurelin before the creation of the Silmarils and the Darkening? What about the people in Beleriand in the First Age?

Can we talk about how weird the rules of hockey are? Like specifically surrounding fights. Don’t get me wrong I love a good hockey fight but why is it allowed? What it the purpose? Why can you not take your helmet off but if it just falls off it’s fine? Why does the ref just stand there and watch? Hell why does the whole team just stand there and watch? It’s unhinged and I love it

in internet posts it is easy to cut them out of your life. they are hurting you! they aren't listening to you!
they held your hair back. they lent you lipstick. they held your hand at the train station and got you home safe. they rounded on your bully, got loud, said get fucked, spitting-mad in your defense.
they also cut the hair off again. told you that you should really think twice before wearing something like that. took you for granted. took your insecurities and threw them in your face again.
you know logically it should be easy. all the internet advice comments always read it will feel better. like an equation - if a person is rotten, you just remove them. you pull the tooth that's hurting.
but it was never a big flare-up moment. you don't live in a sitcom. they never tried to take your boyfriend or steal from your apartment. they showed up to birthdays and they wrote songs about you and bring you water without you asking. once you found out they carry an emergency inhaler for you, even though you haven't had an asthma attack in years - just in case.
where is the line? people fuck up. sometimes they fuck up badly. sometimes people have raw personalities, like a powerline, and being around them is dangerous. addicting. sometimes they can't help themselves, but you know they're trying. sometimes they are just rough-around-the-edges. sometimes they don't even realize how they sounded when they said that. sometimes it's just - you've both loved each other for so long now, the way this thing hurts goes back to the root.
and that's the fucked up part. you have pushed your fingers against the sweetheart of memory. things these days are electric, tense, harrowing. they didn't used to be. there were a lot of good days in there. sometimes you want to just close your eyes and say can this be over yet? do we still need to be fighting?
doing that would give up any chance you get of getting an apology, but you don't always know that you need an apology, you love them. once they flaked on your birthday party. once they told you to get over it, people are always dying. they also let you crash on their couch for a week after the breakup, handfeeding you when you were so sad you couldn't eat. they are also judgmental about everything, occasionally react to banal statements with an attitude that is weird and fiery. they also love you like a lighthouse sometimes, so strong they cut the storm like lightning.
but the problem is that you might be storm. you might be the thing that needs breaking. what if you are two forces who are desperately, horribly drawn to each other, shaped by the other person's passions, and both good for each other and bad in equal measure.
what if you're both just people, and you're no saint neither.
just cut them off! swallowing the saltwater, you catch yourself in the mirror. you've been shaking more than usual. there's an ache in you that is oblique, loud, impossible to soothe. is this what it looks like? when life is "easier"?
your mouth will always have a hole, is the thing, if you remove the tooth.
