very few characters actually have adhd in media, and when they do, what people mean by that is just that they fidget a lot, not that they have adhd. the only character with adhd I can think of where I’ve watched/read it and I’ve gone, “oh, this character actually has adhd” is Jake peralta from Brooklyn 99. so, here’s my take on how to write adhd, with examples from Brooklyn 99.

I’ll do the best I can to separate them into three categories; the three things people look for in adults with ADHD, which are rejection sensitivity dysphoria, an interest-based nervous system, and emotional hyperarousal.

I’ll also randomly bold and italicize bits so people with ADHD can actually read it.

Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria, or RSD

Rejection sensitivity dysphoria makes people with ADHD overly sensitive to criticism, even if they perceive a rejection and there actually isn’t one. Their emotions are also very strong generally. Because of RSD, people with ADHD become people-pleasers and can develop anxiety because they’re so eager to please.

For me, RSD makes me cry an embarrassing amount for any little reason. in your writing, make your characters overdramatic, criers, and/or people-pleasers. They’ll have trouble saying no. They may also be over competitive, as their perceived rejection may include losing.

how does Jake show this in b99? When Jake comes up with a catchphrase and Rosa says it’s terrible, jake is far more hurt than he should be. He hates losing, and he gets overly upset whenever someone says they don’t like him or don’t trust him, etc. he’s also a people pleaser who has trouble saying no.

An interest-based nervous system

An interest-based nervous system includes hyperfocuses and an inability to pay attention. It stems from the fact that we can’t make as much dopamine as neurotypicals. This means that while neurotypicals get dopamine after completing a task, people with ADHD don’t. That means that people with ADHD don’t have any reason to do tasks, especially those they don’t like. This leads to executive dysfunction—people with ADHD will know they have to or want to do something, but they can’t seem to do it. people with ADHD hyperfocus on things that bring them dopamine. I was obsessed with warrior cats for three years. But hyperfocuses can also last a short amount of time—I’ll have a drawing idea in the middle of class and won’t be able to concentrate on anything else before I finish it. this is where our impulsiveness comes from. we can leap into things we think will give us dopamine without thinking, which can lead to injury. We also tend to tell people personal things they don’t want to hear because of this, and don’t have very good boundaries. We sometimes say whatever comes into our head, which can also result in us being rude on accident. Our voices can also get very loud or we can interrupt people frequently because we’re so impulsive. When people with ADHD hyperfocus, they can forget about anything else. I’ll forget to eat if I’m busy reading a Wikipedia article about feminism in the 1850s, and won’t go to the bathroom or drink water either. It’s also important to note that taking away distractions doesn’t help, because we can do things like pick at our skin and daydream—something that people with ADHD do a lot of. Because of executive dysfunction, people can call people with ADHD lazy or irresponsible.

people with ADHD can also be extremely indecisive because ADHD affects our executive functioning, and making decisions requires planning and prioritizing, and task initiation, which are both executive functions!

people with ADHD also have poor memory for important things, but tend to remember random bits of trivia. Poor memory leads to object permanence problems, which means people with ADHD can forget to call a friend back for weeks, forget that they need to read library books in a closed cabinet, or forget that the vegetables they got will go bad. People can sometimes say that people with ADHD don’t care about anything because of this.

people with ADHD can also be prone to depression because of under or overstimulation. Boredom feels painful for people with ADHD. If we’re overstimulated, we can experience sensory overload—if things are too bright or too loud, if too many things are touching us at once—often it’s not because the thing is too intense, but because too many things are happening at once.

We also have something some people call dolphin brain, where we jump from one thing to another. From the outside, it looks really random, but I find that when I’m talking to another neurodivergent communication is generally easier. For instance, someone with ADHD might see a bee at a baseball field and tell their team about the time they saw whales at seaworld because their little brother was also stung by a wasp there. people will see no connection on the outside, but it makes perfect sense to the person with ADHD.

people with ADHD can also be overachievers, either because they hyperfocus on schoolwork or their RSD makes it so that failing at something isn’t an option. people with ADHD can also be very controlling and stubborn, probably because we hyperfocus on something and cant handle it being any different, and any change to our plans can be seen as rejection.

we can also have a hard time ordering our thoughts or doing stuff like math in our head. a lot of the time I number my thoughts like, 1. this reason, 2. this reason, etc. even if theres only two or sometimes I just need the 1. as a transition for my brain. when I don’t write it down or organize it like that it feels like I’m trying to grasp ropes that have been covered in oil (it’s not going to happen) and then my brain gets all jumbled and I have to restart at the beginning. this is probably just me, but it feels the same way when I’m reading long paragraphs of something uninteresting, or even short bits of historical documents because the way they phrase things is really pompous and hard to process.

also, stuff like caffeine calms us down and helps us focus. people who don’t take medication (me) often drink coffee or caffeinated sodas to focus.

another random tip, but if your character with ADHD also is genderfluid or genderflux, they might have a hard time figuring out their gender sometimes, because we can be known to have a hard time putting our feelings into words or our brains will just go, “nope, not thinking about that right now” and move on, which can be pretty frustrating.

people with adhd also have a trait called time blindness, where we have no idea how long something takes and therefore can’t manage our time very well. this often results in us being late or just sitting around the house because we got ready way too early.

we also have something called consequence blindness—we do things and are completely unaware of the consequences. if I don’t brush my teeth, I get cavities. but I don’t think about that when I’m deciding I’m too tired to brush my teeth.

in b99, jake regularly stays up all night solving cases and watches documentaries on random topics. He’s also very distractible—when they’re trying to find the person who sent Captain Holt death threats in the train yard, Jake says he and captain holt should take a train trip together sometime. Jake says that he’ll forget Amy if they don't work together because he’s like a goldfish.

Emotional hyperarousal

This is the only thing people tend to include when writing characters: the fidgeting. People with ADHD tend to need more stimulation than others, so we’ll do things like draw during class and chew on pens.

people with ADHD can also have apd, or auditory processing disorder. we tend to watch shows with subtitles on and may take a second to process what you’re saying, or hear it wrong. The subtitles thing may be partially do to creating just the right amount of stimulation, but if I don’t have subtitles, me and my other friends with ADHD will watch tv with the volume turned up very high. People with ADHD also can have a hard time interpreting other people‘s tone and have a hard time controlling their own. They can be bad at social cues and have poor manners because we don’t pick up on that stuff.

people with ADHD also tend to observe everything or nothing at any given time, mostly based on the amount of stimulation they have—if they dont have a lot in their main task, they’ll need to take in something else at the same time. Likewise, if I’m hyperfocusing on something I often don’t notice anything else, like if someone asks me a question.

in b99, Jake fidgets with things a lot. In the intro, he’s picking up and examining a figurine on his desk, likely because he was bored with paperwork or some other task.

INTJ or ENTJ?

Hi Charity,

I'm hoping you can help me figure out my type, I’m stuck between INTJ or ENTJ. I feel like neither of them fit completely, but I know that I use Ni/Se and Te/Fi.

I relate a lot to the Ni posts you made. I have a very personalized worldview, that I find impossible to explain (I have confused a fair amount of people in attempts made). I think things through before engaging most of the time....

You give stronger evidence for INTJ than ENTJ. Most of your "tert-Se" behaviors are more likely for inferior Se (sometimes leaping in too fast, miscalculating, but being sensory-aware and enjoying pleasures and aesthetics) than a Te/Se looper (ENJs tend to lose sight more of how things will rebound on them and make short-sighted tert-Se decisions when problem-solving sometimes, just to "rush" the process to completion) and you seem emotionally mature in a tert-Fi way (ETJs have real trouble connecting to people on an emotional level and not substituting physical contact for emotional closeness).

i realize this will probably bring up old drama so you might not want to answer it. but do you ever regret, however on purpose or on accident, bringing all that unnecesary hate towards Katara? i'm really sad and dissapointed tbh. i'm a woman of color and katara was so important to me growing up. my favorite animated woman ever. and then this resurgence comes and theres so, so much unnecesary hatred for her and everyone ignoring everything that makes her a good character.

(2/3) 2- and you know, i expected this from the male side of the fandom. they were misogynistic to her and the others even back then so i would expect it to be even worse with how internet culture is more mysogistic now that ever. and i wasnt wrong. male atla fans had some truly horrible takes and views that just came across as racism and misogyny. but, i expected these circles to be better. to be a safe space for us woc who love this character. but i found the same weird hatred for her.

hey anon. thanks for asking this question, because i hadn’t addressed this topic previously and this gave me an opportunity to do so.

no, i don’t regret publicly interpreting a character whom i love through a nuanced and human lens. and i don’t regret combating the one-dimensional interpretation of this character, which posits that she’s merely an vaguely defined object of attraction for some boy or another, and a singularly gentle, mature, maternal figure whose sole purpose in life is to nurture others. those interpretations suck. they rob her of the humanity and complexity that make her character unique and they stem from misogynistic tropes that reduce women to the services they can provide to men. the thing in the world that matters most to me is fighting misogyny, and this trend to diminish a proud and powerful and angry teenage girl by exaggerating only her most socially acceptable traits is misogyny.

unlike you, i did not grow up watching avatar: the last airbender. the shows i watched growing up did not have a lot of girls who felt real to me. the girls i saw on tv growing up were simple. they were the main characters’ crushes. they were simple, desirable, usually sweet and loving, and not much else. if they had a flaw, it was that they were, at best, “awkward.” whatever that means. or if they were the protagonists, which was rare, they were nice enough and tried to do the right thing, but they never had strong feelings like resentment and anger. they weren’t allowed to be unfeminine which meant they weren’t allowed to be bitter, angry or in any way flawed. they didn’t look like the version of girlhood i knew to be true for me personally, which included a lot of anger and frustration and powerlessness.

that crappy representation left me with internalized misogyny that chased me for longer than i’d like to admit. i did not learn to think of girls as humans who could be as interesting and flawed and messy as the boys were. i did not value myself as a girl, and later a woman, because i thought the best thing a girl could be was... bland. boring. pretty, but empty. passionless.

it would have meant the world to me to see a character like katara.

because katara is angry. she has every right to be: she’s had so much stolen from her, including her mother, her people, and her childhood. katara has a short fuse. she yells. she snaps. she fucks up. sometimes she makes mean jokes! i never saw a single one of those dreamily perfect cartoon love interests make mean jokes when i was a kid. she is extremely idealistic--it’s her defining character trait--but we see the bad side of that as well as the good. we see that her need to help others leads her to act rashly, to get herself into danger, to put others in danger too.

and she has her very own arc. it’s not about her love for another person, either (what a snooze of a storyline); it’s about growing up and learning to break down some of that stubborn black-and-white thinking that we all indulge in as children. it’s a true coming-of-age arc and it belongs to a fourteen-year-old girl.

when i, to use a phrase i find crass, “entered the fandom,” i quickly realized that other fans’ perceptions of katara did not line up with the things i valued most about her. other fans seemed to valorize her most socially acceptable feminine qualities: her generosity, her kindness, her dedication to helping others. and of course i love those parts of her--i love everything about her--but what is really remarkable about avatar: the last airbender is that katara’s many important virtues are also counterbalanced by equally significant flaws. a good character has flaws. katara is a good character, and a deviation from the characters who made up my formative media landscape, because she has flaws. her temper, her idealism, her stubbornness--these are flaws. flaws make her seem real and human and challenge the mainstream sentiment that girls are not real or human.

it simply did not occur to me that celebrating these aspects of katara that make her a realistic and well-written teenage girl would spark ire from other adult fans. it absolutely did not occur to me that i would then be blamed for somehow causing misogynistic interpretations of this character, particularly given that misogynistic interpretations of this character are the very thing i sought to correct when i began to blog about this television show.

i’m told there are “fans” on instagram and tiktok who think katara is whiny, annoying, and overly preoccupied with her trauma. i do not use instagram or tiktok, so i wouldn’t know, but i’ll take your word for it. respectfully, however, they didn’t get that from me. misogynistic takes on katara have existed since before i came along. i have never, ever called katara whiny. and seeing as i have been treating my own PTSD in therapy for nine years, you can safely conclude that i don’t think anyone, katara included, is overly preoccupied with their trauma. that’s not a thing. do i think she’s annoying? of course not! as a character, she’s a delight. does she sometimes find real joy in aggravating her brother and her friends? yes, because she’s 14. i, an adult, am not annoyed by her. sokka and toph often are, because that is katara’s goal and katara always succeeds in her goals. she’s not “annoying.”

if there are “fans” who are indeed following lesbians4sokka and somehow misreading every single post and interpreting them to mean that we hate katara and they should too, i don’t really know what you want me to do about that. l4s has over ten thousand followers and we have already posted so many essays disavowing katara hate. our feminist and antiracist objectives in running the blog are literally pinned with the headline “please read.”

furthermore, you cannot reasonably expect my co-blogger and me to control the way our words will be received. we should not have to, and are not going to, add a disclaimer to every post saying that when we critique or make jokes about a teenage girl we are doing so through a feminist lens. our url is lesbians4sokka, and we are clearly women. if that alone doesn’t make it obvious, then refer back to that pinned post.

it is indescribably frustrating, and really goddamn depressing as well, that people are so comfortable with the misogynistic binary of Perfect Good Women and Flawed Wicked Bitches that they perceive any discussion of a woman’s flaws to be necessarily relegating her to the latter camp. if that is how you (a generic you) perceive women, then i’m sorry, but you’ve internalized sexism that i cannot cure you of. and it’s unjust to expect my friend and me to write for the lowest common denominator of readers who have not yet had their own feminist awakenings. we do not write picture books for babies. we write for ourselves, and with the expectation that our readers can think critically. reading media through a feminist lens is my primary interest; i have no intention of excising that angle from my writing.

as i go through my life, i am going to embrace the flaws of girls and women because not enough people do. as long as the dominant narratives surrounding women are “good and perfect” and “unlovable wh*re,” you’ll find me highlighting flawed, realistic, righteously angry women in the margins. and for what it’s worth, it’s not just katara. i champion depictions of angry girls in all sorts of media. that’s sort of my whole thing. my favorite movies are part of the angry girl cinematic universe: thoroughbreds, jennifer’s body, hard candy, jojo rabbit, et cetera. on tv, in addition to katara, you’ll find me celebrating tuca and bertie, poppy from mythic quest, tulip and lake from infinity train, korra, and more. i adore all these women and see myself in them. i hope you find this suitably persuasive to establish that i have sufficient Feminist Cred, according to your standards, to observe and write about these very flawed and human fictional women.

what i’m saying is this: i decline to take responsibility for the misogynistic discourse orbiting a children’s cartoon. as someone who writes about that series from a perspective that seeks to add humanity and nuance to the reductive, one-dimensional, overwhelmingly sexist writing that already exists, i am pretty taken aback that i am the one being blamed for the very problem i sought to address. except not that taken aback because i am a woman online, haha! and this is always how it goes for us.

finally, i think it sucks that you’ve chosen to blame me for a problem that begins and ends with the patriarchy. i can’t control the way this response will be perceived, just like how i can’t control the way anything will be perceived because i am just one human woman, but i do hope you choose to be reflective, and consider why you’ve chosen this avenue to assign blame.

Character Analysis: Dean Forester (Gilmore Girls)

Moved in high school from Chicago to Stars Hollow

Lives with his parents and younger sister Clara

Quickly starts dating Rory

Works at Doose's market

Gets in a few fights

Breaks up with Rory over her refusal to say “I love you”

Gets back with Rory after she is willing to say “I love you”

Becomes deeply jealous over Rory liking Dean displaying unhealthy behavior

Breaks up with Rory again very publicly but continues to display his attraction to her including getting in a fight over with Jes

Doesn’t go to college right away worried about finding a job and succeeding

Dates Lindsy, a girl everyone considers nice

Quickly becomes engaged to Lindsy and marries

Analysis:

Dean is a normal high schooler and young adult. His family isn’t particularly wealthy and this leads him to work throughout the show, and he attends the public school away from Rory. He’s athletic and starts off as a sort of bad boy (series 1), he is mostly not that and tends to be more of a homebody and focused on his relationships. He lacks much ambition beyond being a husband and having a partner for much of the show. This is seen in his pattern of relationships but also in his love for the idea of having a traditional family. (Series 1-5)

His emotions often run high but often come off as pretty charismatic allowing people to like him. This shows in the way the town but especially Lorelai changes their view of him rather fast to positive rather quickly. This is in stark compassion to the way much of the town never changes their negative perception of Jess Mariano. His charisma however is dampened by his tendency to be self-centered and not care much for other people's feelings or perspectives.

Dean’s strong emotions are also tied into him being stubborn, and can both positively stand his ground against people like Richard or Tristen but can also cause problems in how he can interact with his partners and people who don’t deserve to be treated poorly like Jess or Luke.

Relationships to Rory & Lindsay

Dean’s relationship to Rory is the most key part of his story in the larger narrative. It’s an interesting one as the writers overall painted him as the “perfect first boyfriend” through the eyes of many of the characters including Rory, but in reality, the relationship is abusive. Dean tends to be possessive, dismissive, manipulative, and overly sensitive. We can also see the effects this has on Rory as he worsens her conflict-avoidance and anxiety. Seen heavily in his yelling and Rory being deeply scared of angering him.

An important to note is their relationship is liked in the town even when they are worried they may have had sex after Rory’s dance. (1x09) Most of the town continues to like Dean and sees him and Rory as a good couple. This includes Lorelai for most of the show. This overall like of Dean and of her being with Dean colors their relationship for the first two seasons of the show and how they interact with Jess.

When those around you reinforce the idea of how good someone you love is it will make it harder to notice the toxic and abusive behavior and give the abuse cover. Lorelai’s approval especially makes Rory feel like Dean is the perfect boyfriend. Lorelai herself is not likely to have toxic behavior as her relationship to Christopher is full of toxic behaviors and her emotional abuse and a child. Lorelai’s multiple episodes of support for Dean even without Rory being there likely make him feel as if he is supported and will have her telling Rory to stay with him.

The start relationship right coincides with the opening of the show. (1x01) He easily charms Rory and this coincides with the start of his possessive behavior. Including how fast he starts the relationship. Intense relationships that move very fast is often a negative sign for the ability of the people in it to moderate their emotions and can be a first abusive move. Rory is very nervous about this showing trepidation to move fast even when she has a clear crush on Dean. (1x01, 1x03-7).

In season one we see him block Rory's path and during the double date episode, he physically moves Rory's head when she is looking back and Lane to check if she is having a good time. (1x05, 1x12). While this behavior is not violent, invasion of space is a huge sign of a lack of respect for boundaries and is part of his overall pattern of abuse.

During the Donna Reed (1x14) story, Dean is very into the ideas of a Donna Reed style lifestyle finding the idea of a nuclear family where his wife cooks dinner very appealing. This is in large contrast to how Rory sees the world. When Rory is upset about his comments about wanting that life he calls it “just a joke”. Rory goes out of her way to make Dean happy while still keeping her own theatrical love in play when she makes him a 50s style dinner. However, an interesting mark is she seems genuinely upset when she thinks it didn’t go perfectly.

Dean attempts to build Rory a car for their three month anniversary and Rory seems overwhelmed by the situation but still finds it romantic. Dean tells Rory he loves her and when she won’t say it back he gets’ very angry with her and is unwilling to understand that it means something more for her to say it than it does for him. And as we understand he broke up with her over this. The giving of lavish presents and his unwillingness to let Rory have her own feelings come across as manipulative. It’s a common abuser behavior to give extravagant shows of affection followed by negative behavior. Dean also shows the abusive behaviors of yelling and dismissal emotions. (1x16)

Dean becomes irritated by the way the town overall seems frustrated with him, though shows concern for Rory when talking to Lane. Lorelai gets the truth out of what really happened when she confronted Dean. However, it’s unfair to Rory when Lorelai sides with him when Rory had all the right to not want to say “I love you” before she’s ready. (1x20)

The first breakup arc ends as Dean confronts Rory after he notices her trying to get the nerve up to talk about it by coming to his house and when she talks about wanting to say something but without saying it during the town meeting. He gets angry at first when Rory still struggles to communicate, and he sees Tristen picking on her by taking her books. But Rory gets out what she needs to say, and they make up. (1x21)

Following their makeup Dean is subjected to having to meet Rory’s grandparents. He tries hard to fit in bus struggles, understandably as Richard is being judgmental of him and working to make him uncomfortable on purpose. Rory and Lorelai both try to stand up for him and Emily is actually pretty affable not considering Dean to be much of a current threat to status or Rory's future.

However, Dean seems to internalize Richard's ideals and statement of him not being enough and turns it into a threat. Stating “He couldn't care less about Harvard” because he can’t go, taking his emotions out on Rory and belittling her deviation to her education. However, he can remember to bring his focus back to where it’s important and apologize though Rory continues to feel like she must apologize when it’s not as much of her fault. This also is part of his pattern of blowing up, apologizing, and then continuing to treat her poorly. (2x02)

Dean is invited for Rory’s coming out ball and spends much of the time complaining about what he has to wear but cares about Rory enough that he goes even when he hates the outfit. This shows how he keeps the relationship going easily, being able to point to all the positive actions. (2x06) One way being him using impactful displays of affection. (2x12) Put this positivity is undercut by his maltreatment of Rory.

When Rory and Tristan play Romeo and Juliet, Rory is scared to tell Dean anything, not only that they had kissed when she and Dean weren’t together and that they are playing Romeo and Juliet. He is resentful about all of it, and while he does say it’s not her fault he does a good job of making her uncomfortable and doubting her. This shows how dean provokes worsens Rory's relational anxiety. Dean shows characteristic jealousy and controlling behavior by injecting himself into the situation and watching the rehearsals. This jealousy and need to watch Rory is common manipulative behavior. It both alters how Rory acts and assuages his fear of being left without him having to regulate his own emotions. (2x09)

Dean shows jealousy towards Jess even when Rory, and he only glanced at each other during the Bracebridge dinner. While Rory is starting to like him she has not yet done anything to warrant suspicion of her faithfulness. Showing suspicions of partners around others is common abuser behavior as it shows insecurity but also makes the abused partner feel as if they are being watched. (2x10)

During the basket competition, dean displays possessive behavior. While Jess obviously wants to mess with Dean and flirt with Rory, Dean shows no ability to regulate his emotions or offer Rory trust and understanding. Along with that he tells her what she can and can't do. He tries to play the boss of the situation to feel powerful. He leaves in anger and Rory tries to get him to understand she isn’t doing anything on purpose but Dean doesn’t listen. He follows this by guilting her for doing the town traditions, something he knows she loves.

This combines manipulation, guilt-tripping, and a degree of intimidation with how loudly he flies off the handle. This causes Rory to believe she needs to calm his temper down. Jess while he is doing this on purpose notes Dean's overreaction and controlling of Rory's.

Dean also goes behind Rory and tries to talk to Lorelai to get her to insert herself between Rory and Jess, something that is abusive behavior to control the environment around the person being abused. (2x13)

Similar behavior of guilt-tripping is shown when Rory wants to spend a night alone and Dean makes fun of her reason and then when she tries to make sure he isn’t mad she says he isn’t. However irritation is exuded via his body language and including him saying he’s a “saint”. This guilt tripping is a common abusive behavior of his.

Dean refuses to let her have her alone at night and this bumps up against her having ended up with people over due to Paris wanting to study and Jess bringing over food. Rory is terrified of telling him the truth, while having just told him that Jess was there for dropping off the food . Rory suffers anxiety provoked by Dean and plays on Rory’s avoidance of conflict. He gets furious when she tries to be truthful, not letting her explain and not believing what she says. After Paris causes Dean to calm down Rory gives him complete cover for being angry saying it was all perfectly justified.

When Rory gets distressed Paris plays the good friend and steps in. Interestingly, Paris who is blunt and self focused reads this situation as one that is worth covering for.

When your friends feel the need to intervene between you're your partner to lessen the blow it speaks poorly of your relationships. Jess and Paris are the only ones who accurately read Dean and Rory’s relationships the first time they date. (2x16)

During the entire Jess arc, Dean tries to be even more involved in Rory's life than he already was, leaving her very little room to breathe. (2x10-3x07)

An example is when he tries to get her to watch him play softball before they had already agreed to visit each other that night. This adds to his attempts to control everything she does. He then tries to wait for her when she’s busy at the house and cleans her car without asking and calling 14 times. Lorelai tries hard to get him to give her space when he gets anxious over Jess and Rory. He then accepts that Rory has some feelings for jess. (2x18)

After Rory ends up in a car accident Dean becomes outraged after Rory writes a letter to tell him to throw his bag on the floor. Interestingly, Rory is surprised that he invites her in and is kind to her. She expects her to be angry and to yell at her. But this is an example of using guilt and manipulation, part of his fear of losing Rory. (2x20)

Rory crosses a line when she kisses Jess at the wedding. We see her try and figure out what to do why she goes away for the summer. Jess and Dean both suffer due to her indiscretions, however, it doesn’t excuse previous behavior nor does it mean you are allowed to be outright abusive. (2x22)

After this, we see Dean’s behaviors continue, and he shows a sense of judgment over the way Rory is excited getting down on her the moment she finally becomes calm and excited after feeling deeply anxious about it. (3x01-3)

Their relationship ends at the dance competition (3x07) Rory is distracted periodically by Jess messing with her. He breaks up with her in an extreme and public manner causing Rory and Jess to both be humiliated and hurt Rory deeply. Rory then feels the need to apologize and try and get him to not hate her following the fight. Which he by omission says he does hate her even though it’s very clear that while she did like two people at once his abusive behavior activates her fears so deeply she still has to prove he doesn’t hate her.

Later Dean takes a confrontation stance trying to get Jess in trouble with Rory trying to pick a fight with him and telling him that this is “his” town and making fun of him for wanting to be nice for Rory which is funny and makes it seem like he wanted the hold on Rory. Reminiscent of the cultural concept of people being “whipped” or similar things. (3x09) This antagonistic behavior continues throughout the story.

Dean is unwilling to really move on and Rory is unable to maintain boundaries. He talks about how she drove him to want to do more and go to a four-year school. This comes across as manipulative because it’s not something we see him follow through with and follows after him telling Jess he wasn’t going to just stay in his own lane.

He then doesn’t give Jess and Rory space at the carnival to start with, even if Clara was still involved. We also see Rory assume Jess will blow up at her afterward even when he maintains his same affect of mild annoyance he had not changed it to try and make Rory feel worse and doesn’t second guess her explanation. (3x10)

We see Dean start to date Lindsay at the hockey game Rory goes to. A relationship that is deeply harmful and likely traumatizing to Lindsay. We know little of how it started other than Lindsay seems to be considered nice but cold to Rory understandably as Dean is still hung up and likely told Lindsay that Rory broke his heart. She isn’t aware of the mess of abuse on Dean's side and Rory’s actions. (3x15,3x17)

We then have the big Dean Jess fight. There is some merit in Dean wanting to know what happened as if a girl comes crying out of the bedroom at a party as there is cause for concern. But what makes this not at a show of compassion and more possessive is in his reaction. He acts as if to defend her honor and get in a fight. This continues his pattern of possessiveness over Rory and of being willing to use violence as a method.

I do think we see some behavior here from jess that’s toxic, it doesn’t fall anywhere near sexual assault and the reactions did nothing helpful. And most importantly had it been sexual assault a person who cared would get the victim to safety and ensure prevention shock not expose them to more violence. Not to mention it isn’t what Rory wants, and he knows she doesn’t like them fighting over her.

This also harms Lindsay as watching your boyfriend get in a fight over another girl. (3x19)

When Dean shares the news of his engagement he is unwilling to even see why Rory might be uncomfortable, not even angry, just confused, and only shows furry towards her. Then uses the time to guilt trip Rory telling her he “never thought he would be happy again” and insult her and her boyfriend. (3x20) Rory tries hard to make up for this by offering a nice wedding present, which was detrimental to both of them as it continues their inability to form boundaries. (3x22)

Dean’s lack of ability to form boundaries flares again when inviting his ex-girlfriend to his wedding with his new fiance. During his bachelor party, he starts talking about Rory and showing he is completely not over her and is marrying another woman to make up for it. This is something that is very unhealthy and is setting up for him to be unhappy, Lindsay to end up being abused and Rory to continue to not be able to move on. (4x04). Dean is willing to offer Rory some comfort in a vacuum. It's kind, but we see this spiral into him trying to bring Rory back into the relationships and affects how attentive to Linsday. (4x14)

We see Lindsay learning to cook and it seems they bring him lunch regularly as he noted this was early. Lindsay clearly tries to be what Dean wanted, learning to cook, bringing him food, trying to be what he wanted and circling her life around him, her whole family treating them as one of them. There might be some tension here as having a hovering mother and father-in-law might be hard, but as later we see him mildly complain about Lindsay wanting things it does show there was financial support. They seem to have an outwardly functional relationship. It’s hard to tell but due to the idea that she doesn’t work and that when she asks for the car he gives her money, there might be an “allowance” type situation, something that can easily turn toxic and abusive.

Rory judges Linsday for wanting a townhouse, which wanting a nice place to live after getting married makes perfect sense. Rory’s level of importance she puts fancy four-year schools on also isn’t the same way everyone thinks. Being a skilled builder who repairs homes is actually a fine job prospect and it always seemed Dean was good at it, we also know that the wife waiting for you at home was what he wanted in the first place. Dean is deeply annoyed at Rory’s judgment when Lindsay hears Rory talking badly of her, she is hurt due to not only Rory's continued judgment due to Dean having gone round her back more than once.

Dean realizes he yelled at Rory in the dorm and apologizes, but Rory says he was perfectly in the right, something she has learned to say from his past abuses. He also does this after calling incessantly, and never changing his behavior. While apologizing is positive if you back it up with nothing then it means nothing, and Dean never backs up his apologies. He also fails to stand up for his wife to Rory, continuously covers up his relationship to Rory already and maked Linsday feels admittedly terrible. Dean disrespects her wishes to not see someone who is judgmental and the ex-girlfriend, a tactic of psychological abuse. (4x15, 4x18)

We see the cracks in Linsday and Dean’s relationship when they fight about never spending any time together. Dean defends it by saying they need money, likely true, but Linsday is asking him to keep promises of calling and going out with friends when he says he will. There are problems in never keeping promises and making someone always wait alone for you at home. It clearly seems they don’t talk openly about finances and by her reaction, it seems this is the first time she has purposely gone out without him. He has lied about where he is before like hiding out in the arcade late previously and later to visit Rory. (4x20)

Dean drops everything to go see Rory when she calls, but never calls his wife along with being willing to spend money to drink with Rory. We also learn that Dean lies to Lindsay. These all show more commitment to Rory then to the woman he married. Everything in this episode points to emotional neglect and abuse through manipulation from Dean. (4x21)

When Jess shows up at Rory’s place (4x21) also tries to play protector and control to Rory just because someone else she used to date shows up. Following this he acts cagey and angry towards her, shutting her out because he guesses she might be seeing Jess again. All of this is reminiscent of his old behavior of trying to orchestrate Rory’s entire life. This also when Dean and Rory almost kiss, showing he uses manipulation as ways to get what he wants. During this situation, he is manipulating and emotionally hurting two women.

Later on the same day, Dean shows up at Rory’s house to finish what they started and Rory ends up agreeing to sleep with him after he lies about it being over with Lindsay and that they both “feel it”. Which is untrue Lindsay while she is unhappy doesn’t believe or so-called feel it’s over. Rory is of course culpable in what she did, this is not to argue Rory is blameless. This behavior on Dean’s part towards his wife is emotional abuse. Cheating on someone and lying about your relationship status are both abusive tactics. (4x22)

During the same period, Linsday was waiting for him and believed he was working. She tries to make him happy by having dessert waiting for him. Lindsay answered her phone to try and help, and he yelled at her overreacting deeply to her behavior. Emotionally berating her for something she tried to do right. Lindsay apologizes trying to get him to not yell at her and tries to ask if he is still mad. And Dean is clearly angry at her giving her disappointed and agitated answers along with closed off body language. This is physical and emotionally locking her out.

Dean continues going behind Linsday’s back and cheats on her again following this fight, at the same point Linsday tries hard to please him, making him food and being so proud when it works out. (5x01)

Rory sends a letter to Dean trying to say she doesn’t want to break up the marriage however this serves to be the first time Linsday learns that Dean slept with Rory. This is a horrible way to learn via Rory expressing both feelings of love and wanting to not break up the marriage. She does dramatically break up by throwing his stuff out the window. While this behavior isn’t the best response it is understandable as he actively lied to her multiple times and treated her in an abusive manner to be able to cheat on her. Dean tries to get her multiple times to talk about it shows he doesn’t understand why she is so hurt and is unwilling to admit he was wrong.

Dean then rightfully calls himself an idiot for what he did but then tells Rory removing herself from the situation was tantamount to bailing on him and rewrites history to say she dumped him the first time. While he is right that she did have feelings for another boy to still be judging her for that after what he did is rather hypocritical. (5x02) He also clearly doesn’t feel as guilty as he pretends to as he still continues to be in a relationship with Rory. (5x03-9)

Rory and Dean’s relationship is awkward for everyone around them, something that makes sense as it broke up the family that everyone thought was being built. Dean continues to be angry, admittedly yells at her, and is judgmental of Rory for what happened. He then apologizes, again without changing his behavior and Rory tries to say it’s all okay. Dean also lies about the idea he would have broken up with Linsday, which we can tell as he was trying to fix it. This is similar to his behavior in their first two relationships. (5x03, 5x05)

Lorelai tries to be friends with Dean and wants to return to a normal rhythm that they had when Rory and Dean were kids. Dean is not a fan of this prospect calling it a long time ago whereas Rory does seem to want it. Luke struggles to not make the evening awkward, not believing Dean is right or good for Rory after everything that has happened. (5x05) They start to grow apart because of their lack of time spent together. (5x03-8)

Their breakup is mostly based on the above-mentioned lack of time to spend together but more, so they grow apart. Dean is still living the life he had before back in what Rory referred to as “the old days'' and Rory is living a new life centered around her grandparents' lifestyle and college. While Rory finds Dean comforting and wants to be with him, she is drawn towards the Ivy League fancy party by her family but also because she genuinely seems to enjoy it just as much as small-town Stars Hollow.

During the party, her grandparents throw to find her a proper boyfriend Rory actually ends up having a great time when she meets Logan there. Logan is a symbol of her love of the aristocratic lifestyle and Dean is her connection to home; this party breaks one tie and forms another. Emily and Richard mostly got what they wanted and Rory did choose the rich boy over the hometown. Dean breaks up with her again publicly over her appearing to have had a good time with new friends and that she is late to be picked up. This is the final breakup in the show and is a final split for the two, recognizing in Dean’s words he “doesn’t belong here [with Rory] anymore” (5x08)

However, there are secondary reasons they didn’t work out. Firstly starting this relationship out by cheating on his wife and being in a place of awkwardness and distress with those around them set up the relationship for failure. Deans toxic to abusive behavior was always going to drive a wedge between them. Dean’s abusive behavior on top of Rory's communication deficits breaks up any ability to work through outside stressors like living a few hours away during the college years. Rory’s fear of upsetting Dean due to his past abusive behavior means Rory is unwilling to address issues point-blank and Dean will only talk about them in accusatory ways.

Dean didn’t fully understand why he and Rory broke up blaming it slowly on Rory “wanting more” and attempts to put his own emotional baggage on Luke when he sees him being in a relationship with Lorelai while working on a house (5x18)

During A Year In The Life when they bump into each other at Doses’s Rory describes their relationship as one that was healthy, positive and says Dean taught her what “safe felt like” an interesting bit of revisionist history. We know for a fact that Rory was constantly on the defensive with Dean and as has been discussed Dean perpetrated many emotionally abusive acts towards Rory and Linsday.

Rory viewed his abusive behavior as the person she wished she had met later but had a positive influence on her. Dean however seems to appreciate this characterization and this is the final closing word on their relationship.

personality.

enfp-a / the assertive campaigner. independent, playful, optimistic, brave, upfront, charismatic, adventurous, communicative, perceptive, affectionate, smothering, unrealistic. as an assertive campaigner, somin is lively and outgoing. it doesn’t matter what’s going on in her head or what kind of mood she’s in; chances are, she’ll still go out of her way to socialize. she enjoys making people laugh and usually accomplishes this by politely teasing/poking fun at those she knows well, but she can read a room and knows when it is or isn’t appropriate. she’s a great communicator which stems from her strong perceptive skills — it isn’t hard for her to get a good idea of what the general mood is and what’s expected of her at the moment. however, she does tend to be overly-enthusiastic which leads to unrealistic expectations both of herself and of others. these expectations accompanied by her somewhat smothering nature can definitely make some uncomfortable.

aquarius / the water-bearer. passionate, charming, impatient, temperamental, stubborn, rebellious, progressive, humanitarian, abrupt, intelligent. somin is often described as being unpredictable; she rarely makes her whole personality known, so she has a reputation for being surprising or even shocking. most of the time, she comes across as being genuine, warm and helpful, but there are some colder sides to her. she tends to lose her temper extremely quickly — especially when she feels like someone is trying to control her, as there’s nothing she hates more than her freedom being imposed on. will break rules without thinking twice just to prove a point and smile while she does it. overall, she doesn’t mean to be problematic, but it seems to be a part of herself that she can’t escape.

history / trivia.

the result of an accidental pregnancy. neither of her parents were ready for a baby, but her maternal grandmother promised to raise her if her mother would go through with the pregnancy. obviously, she did. her parents are not together and neither of them live in boseong. she’s met her mom a few times, but doesn’t know anything about her dad. either way, she doesn’t feel any sort of attachment to either of them. as far as she’s concerned, her grandma is all she needs.

granted....... she was kinda bratty/ungrateful towards her grandma for a LONG time. she used to think like is easy if you just try & didn’t really understand why her grandma ran a fuckin corndog stand of all things and why they were poor when they could just ~not be~. threw tons of fits in which she swore she’d never sell corndogs.

lit rally..... eunmi was the one (1) person who inspired her to be a little less MEAN. saw eunmi being nice to everyone all the time and eventually started being nicer to her grandma (and other kids lol) as a result.

speaking of eunmi!!! somin fuckin loved her so much. viewed her as one of the very few good things in her life, so she was pretty clingy towards her which evolved into being possessive. hated the idea of her being close to anyone else,,,,, f’s in the chat.

she was pretty athletic in school, so she was kinda popular bc of that? was involved in soccer & cheer, spent too much time on extracurriculars so her grades were trash but she still thought she’d get into snu because ~it can’t be that hard~. told everyone she was gonna go to snu & when she DIDN’T get in, she had too much pride to admit it so she just told everyone she was accepted.

left boseong for seoul after graduation with NO idea what the FUCK she was gonna do!!!!!! wandered around hopelessly for like a year and a half, doing part-time work and trying to get high-paying jobs with trashy resumes. even tried to become a model but no one wanted her whole 5 ft 3 inches country girl vibes </3

met a lot of people who taught her a lot about herself while she was in seoul, but she was STRUGGGLINGGG to make ends meet so she came back to boseong. told everyone she dropped out of snu bc it hurt her pride less than admitting she was never enrolled to begin with.

here’s the real kicker........ now she runs the fuckin corndog stand in the traditional market. it’s karma kicking her ass for all the complaining she did 10 years ago.... </3 p much every day of the week, you can find her down there slacking off or talking a mile a minute to whoever will listen.

always seems to have some great plan cookin up in that mind of hers, but at this point, everyone in boseong probably knows that she’ll never do any of it. she’s destined to be a corndog vendor for life...... please don’t clown her.

reputation for being unsuccessful in love, but it’s literally just because her ~unrealistic expectations~ make her give up on every relationship that isn’t kdrama material in like..... a week.

still lives with her grandma bc she doesn’t make enough money to afford her own place but she’s only 22 so....... just wait. she’ll live in a mansion someday..... hopefully

doesn’t necessarily think she’s better than anyone, but it’s easy to assume she does because she thinks she’s destined for greater things. she complains about boseong quite often and says stuff like “i don’t belong here” or “i know my life will amount to something bigger and better than this” but fr.... she doesn’t look down on anyone. she has no right to. she just genuinely, naively thinks that fate is on her side and something HUGE is written in her story. thinks that she deserves a happy ending and doesn’t have to work for it. that kind of thing. main character syndrome u know.

some quick plot ideas:

[0/1] — you know somin’s work ethic is nothing to brag about, so you “volunteer” at the corndog stand. in other words, you loiter around and reminder her to do her job and/or cover her shifts for her while she just sits around. she can’t pay you in cash, but she’ll pay you in gratitude and half-assed compliments <3

[0/1] — you only know of somin because you used to see her with eunmi all the time. to this day, you believe that she had something to do with her death.

[0/1] — you frequent the corndog stand because you have a lot to talk about and maybe there’s something therapeutic about ranting to somin while she cooks corndogs and tries her very best to give you advice.

[0/1] — somin pursued you VERY hard, so you decided to give her a chance. however, she dumped you after less than a week. maybe you’re bitter... or confused. (male lock)

[0/1] — somin was really mean to you in elementary, middle or high school because you made frequent attempts to get closer to eunmi.

[0/1] — you used to play sports with somin OR you used to watch her games/competitions and cheer her on.

Deckard Shaw SFW alphabet

A/N: Yeah, I may be in love with the characters from this movie, but it happens. I have lots of planned fanfics (series and one shots), and I may release something else this weekend. I hope you enjoy, feel free to comment, like or reblog and make requests!

A = Affection (How affectionate are they? How do they show affection?)

He is a tough man, who's always in dangerous situations, and people seem to like trying to kill him, so pda is out of question (except if he's jealous). Indoors, when both of you are safe and at ease, he snuggles, spreads sweet kisses all over your face and loves to mess with your hair. He thinks you look best with your morning face.

B = Best friend (What would they be like as a best friend? How would the friendship start?)

He would consider you part of his family. You probably wouldn't spend much time together, but always makes it for birthdays. Of course, it wouldn't be as intimate as a relationship, but he would tell you every single one of his worries. Your friendship probably would start with casual conversations now and then, when Deckard had time to go to a coffee shop.

C = Cuddles (Do they like to cuddle? How would they cuddle?)

Shaw has probably seen a lot of things, things that sometimes don't let him sleep. Even if he is not asleep, he holds on you tight, because he likes to think you need his protection. Sometimes, when both of you were just laying on the couch, he would sneak up on you and just lay his head in your chest, hearing your heartbeat. You two switch who holds who. Most of the nights, he likes to have his arm around your waist, while you nuzzle on his neck. Other times (especially if something went wrong) you let him lay his head in your chest and keep saying sweet nothings until he falls asleep.

D = Domestic (Do they want to settle down? How are they at cooking and cleaning?)

You guys would probably talk about it, maybe even make some plans, but at the end of the day, he always had to move (to keep both of you safe) to another place, and you followed. The apartments were always very expensive and comfortable, but you wouldn't call it home. Secretly, Shaw is saving money for when he finally settles down with you. Now, this man can cook anything you want. Literally. You ask it, he's done it. And it's always delicious. About cleaning, he doesn't enjoy it, but he understands that you guys have to share the responsibilities of the house, so he does it anyway (with a pout, but he does it).

E = Ending (If they had to break up with their partner, how would they do it?)

He would probably do that for the sake of your safety. Someone bad would've probably threatened you, and the thought of losing you would be too much. He would break up with you pretending he didn't care, and even if it broke your heart and his heart, he had to do it. You moving on without him and alive would be better than you dead.

F = Fiance(e) (How do they feel about commitment? How quick would they want to get married?)

You both decided that, if one day you got married, it wouldn't be ordinarily. I mean, look at your lives. There's no time to churches or white dresses, so you guys agreed that, if a ceremony was going to happen, it would be something along the lines of Indian marriage, with only Shaw's siblings, his mother, and your relatives. Maybe one friend or two, but marriage isn't something you two dream of (though he wonders how would you look like in a white dress).

G = Gentle (How gentle are they, both physically and emotionally?)

Physically, he tends to be gentle. As his life can get very violent and he wants to be a better man now, when he's with you he tries to be as gentle as possible. Soft touches, warm hugs, and smoothies are going to happen pretty often, even though sometimes he forgets that he's trying to be more gentle, and ends up being kinda rough.

Emotionally, well, he needs help. He had a hard time expressing his feelings at the beginning of your relationship, and he still has now, though not as often. After all the messed up things that happened in his life, he has lost the capacity to control his emotions very well, so you try to help him out. Even if he's not so okay emotionally, he always gives special attention to your feelings.

H = Hugs (Do they like hugs? How often do they do it? What are their hugs like?)

t’s not something that happens a lot, but he enjoys them. Never in public places, he prefers to do it in private, while you are working on something, or making something to eat. He comes from behind you, wraps his arms around your waist and buries his head into your neck. His hugs usually last a little bit longer than normal, because he likes to feel your heartbeat.

I = I love you (How fast do they say the L-word?)

It takes a while. A long while, to be more specific. He has seen people getting hurt before, and he was scared to losing you. The first time you say it, it’s before he leaves for a mission. He doesn’t have the guts to say it back in that moment, but when he comes back (after almost dieing), the first thing he does is hug you and whisper “I love you” into your hair. He doesn’t say it very often, but he demonstrates it throught actions.

J = Jealousy (How jealous do they get? What do they do when they’re jealous?)

It depends on the person. If it’s a complete stranger, he doesn’t really bother: He trusts you with his life, and he knows that if you flirt back, it’s just a game. He waits for a while, keeping some distance, and ends up just putting a hand in the small of your back and wait for the person to realize what’s going on.

Now, if it’s someone you guys know (Luke, more specifically), he tends to be more protective. As much as he trusts you and knows that you can protect yourself, he feels the urge to get in front of you, cross his arms and get in full “alpha” mode.

K = Kisses (What are their kisses like? Where do they like to kiss you? Where do they like to be kissed?)

It depends on how he feels. He can be gentle, demanding, sweet or tough. You know everything he feels just from the touch of his lips. He usually likes to kiss the top of your head (as he’s taller than you) or your cheeks. Maybe your neck, but that’s only when things are getting hot and heavy. He likes to be kissed in his hands. For some reason, he likes when you kiss his hands. It makes him feel like more than just a killing machine. It means his hands are made for more than destruction, they also were made to protect.

L = Little ones (How are they around children?)

Maybe one day, when he retires and there’s no one left to fight, you two may talk about having kids. Right now, none of you want to have children, but it’s not an impossible thing.

M = Morning (How are mornings spent with them?)

He wakes up very early (sometimes too early for your liking), and get’s the breakfast ready for when you wake up. Other times, he lets himself enjoy the warmth of your body and wakes up to your soft kisses. You two get ready together and spend some time in silence just enjoying the company of each other.

N = Night (How are nights spent with them?)

He usually gets home very late at night, and sometimes you try to stay awake and wait for him, but you just end up sleeping on the couch. It takes a while for him to open up entirely with you. His childhood, his past with Brixton, all the lies involving his name, it can be a little too much for him to tell once. You always get a little piece of his story each time, and he’s glad that you’re always understanding.

The only times he raises his voice with you, there are only two reasons: One, you are in danger and you’re acting too stubborn to realize that, or two, other people made him angry and he’s putting it on you. When you guys fight, he shouts a little, but usually leaves the house for some time to clear his head. He hates to fight with you.

He can’t remember any dates, birthdays or any other “important” things, but if you ask him what’s your favorite color, which kind of dog you had when you were a child, or what’s your favorite kind of tea, he knows it. Deckard can’t remember important things, but the smallest details about you, he saves it to the heart.

R = Remember (What is their favorite moment in your relationship?)

Probably the first time he woke up by your side. There was something about your messed up hair, your puffy eyes and your sleepy voice (combined with your bareback) that made him fall in love with you. The moment when your eyes met his while the soft sunlight touched your skins, he probably had never felt happier.

S = Security (How protective are they? How would they protect you? How would they like to be protected?)

Two words: Overly. Protective. He worries a lot about you, and sometimes too much for your liking. He protects you in various ways: Sending you to hidden places, under the protection of some of his friends (or his siblings), training you to fight and defend yourself, even bringing you to the missions, to protect you himself. Well, he likes to think that, when he’s vulnerable, you can protect him from himself. Also, you can be pretty badass when you feel that he’s been threatened.

T = Try (How much effort would they put into dates, anniversaries, gifts, everyday tasks?)

With you, he’s comfortable enough to be himself: He never feels the urge to impress you, so he doesn’t buy expensive things or spends too much time on planning dates. Though, sometimes he makes a scene: Super expensive places, clothes, and even parties. But when we are talking about everyday tasks, he hates it, but he does for your sake: He knows you work hard, and he has a responsibility.

U = Ugly (What would be some bad habits of theirs?)

Lying. It’s like an addiction. It takes a lot of time to him finally stop lying to you, because it’s just a defense mechanism. Laziness. He knows he has to do housework, but he hates it. He looks at his life, and he thinks it’s worthless to do those simple things.

V = Vanity (How concerned are they with their looks?)

He knows he’s good looking. He knows he is very, very handsome, and he likes to look good. Of course, sometimes he can feel a little down, but there’s always a mirror around to remind him that he is hot.

W = Whole (Would they feel incomplete without you?)

Yes. It feels natural to him to look to his side and see you there. He needs you to function, to concentrate and to sleep well.

X = Xtra (A random headcanon for them.)

Deckard can’t dance to save his life. The only times you guys dance, it’s a slow song, barely a dance (just you two moving around each other), and he always manages to step in your foot.

Y = Yuck (What are some things they wouldn’t like, either in general or in a partner?)

Someone that pushes him into telling things about his life. Missions, secrets, his past, everything has to come naturally, and if he feels pressured even for one second, he’ll back off to his suspicious state.

Z = Zzz (What is a sleep habits of theirs?)

Sometimes, he snores so loudly that it wakes you up. He likes to hold you close on some occasions, to feel or hear your heartbeat. To sleep peacefully, his face needs to be close to your hair, because he likes the smell of the hair cream that you use before you sleep (he says it calms him down).

getting to know jeong yunho

hi! i will be looking into yunhos natal chart and share some of the information i have gotten out of it! thanks to yunho, we know the exact time he was born! i am not entirely sure if the place of birth is that exact though. so as always, this is not 100% accurate and i am not saying i know everything about astrology. this is a hobby of mine which i taught myself.

Gently Gai casually caring about Kakashi’s well-being is my entire reason for living, speaking of which if someone wants to come be my Gai that’d be really fucking nice because us Kakashi’s don’t do too well on our own

He hesitates, but says, "Not that I do not find your newfound mentorship to be a most youthful endeavor, but -"

"I don't know," Kakashi interrupts his friend, "I met her while she was taking her genin exam and she, I don't know, adopted me or something. She just keeps showing up."

Gai nods thoughtfully, "Stubbornness is a useful skill to have when trying to cultivate a friendship with you." Kakashi elbows the other man, but doesn't protest besides that. "She's a good cook."

That's really why he won't say anything, why he won't reveal that the Kyuubi's container and the fourth Hokage's child is still alive: they already killed him once. Naruto and Shikamaru are the same age, they would have been in the same class, and the idea that anyone could want to harm his innocent, precious son makes his blood boil

"They're going to burn down Konoha," Kakashi says flatly.

Gai's hair and teeth sparkle in the sunlight, and he doesn't attempt to deny it.

I love that Natsu-chan has great balance, this is my number one favorite character trope, and I wish more people would write it

She bends down to look at him upside down, and Itachi can feel that she's not using chakra to stick onto him, and sometimes her balance just isn't logical.

I just love the idea of tiny genius Naruto, and I love that Natsu-chan is a seal master at like, fucking seven and a half lol

Itachi knows it's actually far more complicated than that, but just as he does not tell her minutia of the past shinobi wars in their history lessons, she does not overcomplicate her explanations of sealing. Usually he's grateful for that, but when she appears to break every known law to sealing and chakra, he's not.

"That's," he blinks and he's not going to tell her it's impossible because it clearly isn't, "new," he settles on.

Inoichi now feels the urge to bang his head against the table top, because 'a huge pain' to Natsu is 'literally impossible' to everyone else.

Inoichi watches his former genin dig in with resignation. “When are you guys going to start picking up the tab? Feeding you all isn’t cheap you know.”

Hana swallows her mouthful, “Sensei, I am but a lone healer’s apprentice –“

“I have been a chunin less than a month,” Kabuto pouts, wounded, “and already you seek to profit-“

“Do you have any idea how much sealing paper and ink costs?” Natsu demands.

“Okay, okay,” Inoichi grumbles, but it’s not very effective considering he’s smiling, “I take it back, jeez.”

Okay so, since this is a 100k+ word fic, I’ve been doing this thing lately literally just now on this fic review where I only feature quotes from the first chapter (Depending on length.) but, I’m making an exception because I’ve never seen these three characters and my thoughts on them summed up so well by someone I don’t know which is to say anyone, no one I know cares about my interests really lol

"Maybe a little," he admits grudgingly, "Sakura's really smart, but she acts dumb for some reason. And her endurance is really bad. She probably would have been failed on that alone if she didn't have such good aim with shuriken. And Sasuke's good at like, everything, I still don't get why he didn't graduate earlier. He's just so-" Kiba rubs his hand over his face.

"So what?" Hana prompts, even though she's heard this particular complaint before.

"Sad," the genin sighs, "He's miserable all the time, and he works hard and if you yell at him for long enough he'll work with you, but - crap, I don't know. He's got this really great poker face so you think he's just a big jerk, but I can smell his emotions, the big idiot, and he's just this sad lonely kid who won't listen to anyone."

Hana hums, because if she opens her mouth she'll probably start cursing the Hokage and his dumb rules and his dumb ideas, and that is not the type of thing that leads to a long life.

Summary: When Naruto is five, he's gutted by a drunken civilian and presumed dead.

Six months later a girl with ash pale hair and dark blue eyes enters the Academy.

(Guys I swear on my cool as fuck username, and all around internet personality as practically satan and probably Lucifer and whatnot that nobody we like stays dead or severely injured)

Score: 13, this is one of my favorites for a reason, this is actually my second technically third time rereading this in as many weeks

Pairing(s): Uchiha Sasuke/Uzumaki Naruto Hatake Kakashi/Umino Iruka, background Haku/Zabuza, but don’t worry anything you’re thinking of is addressed quite nicely in the fic ultra background but still there’s a lot of relationships and I’m not going to tag them all

Warning(s): Naruto technically dies more than once because this is Naruto we’re talking about but they also technically don’t??? You gotta read it, but basically temporary character death, only the bad guys stay dead in this one.

Nobody knows that Naru-chan lived so there’s that angst for you, however, to be fair it’s not like this whole story is just characters mourning and crying and whatnot, at this point it’s mostly just passing thoughts and memories which, again, to be fair, does almost feel worse at times... Huh, regardless it’s not overly angsty

Kakashi is adopted whether he likes it or not by Natsu-chan, we love both of our emotionally fucked over fair-haired ninja in this house so you won’t have to worry about that sorta fic coming outta nowhere from me BTW... but anyways, Kakashi freaks out a bit, much like the abused dog he always reminds me of, but Natsu is the sweetest and most gentle, yet forceful person he could’ve possibly caught the attention of. (This is canon)

The Akatsuki are still bad, BUT ITACHI ISN’T technically SO WHO FUCKING CARES!!!! (The Massacre still happens tho...)

Mentions of The Flower District and what that implies, and also things a Kunoichi might definitely do

Oh my fucking god the Hyuga... Who would willingly do something so horrible as that? Of all the things... Warning for... The Hyuga branch family situation, it’s dealt with nearly as soon as we are informed but, gods, my blood ran cold, and my face whited out, my sister thought someone had died when she saw my face haha,,, who the fuck does this? And do they die? In canon I mean? I think I only watched up to the chunin exams or Pein’s attack, I can’t remember which tho...

Natsu cries because people are nice to her sometimes. And honestly that’s fair, I burst into to tears once because I imagined someone kissing my forehead softly so, Natsu is completely valid... Sidenote, I’m touch-starved and have no cure for this beyond younger siblings and my cat because I don’t have the ability to ask my mom for a hug without literally gross sobbing and I have A Thing about embarrassment sooooo... yeah if anyone has some therapy justu for me that’d be nice

Mentions of Gross Men that apparently want to have Natsu’s increasingly growing collection of the absolute most dangerous people she can befriend pay them a visit. And by that, I mean an old fuckwit has the gall to leer at a TEN-YEAR-OLD and a FUCKING THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLD!!!!!! Ugh, I hate those kinds of pathetic worms.

On that note, there is technically underaged things going on, but they are also Ninja soooo???? They’ve killed people and are technically in their version of an army, and by the laws of their lands they’re all adults, actually I’m pretty sure by shinobi life expectancy Kakashi is middle-aged, Inoichi is a senior citizen, and Hiruzen is a walking corpse tbh

Alcoholism??? I don’t really think it is but I’m not sure, but some characters do drink often, and usually when stressed courtesy of Natsu and co. but still... I don’t actually know if it is because it doesn’t actually happen much, more like every few weeks/months

Mentions of past sexual assault, and attempted past sexual assault, neither happen in fic or to any of our main characters, the experiences are not graphic though they do talk about it in chapter five, it’s not to graphically described.

Also, a bunch of off-screen lemon

A Thing (That I copy-pasted from the author so that all of you will see it and not say a single word against it.): If you thought Natsu was too mature for her age - she has seen and been through some really horrible shit. But also: my cousin has, since he was like 4, hung out with kids that were about 4 years older than him because those were the kids that were in his neighborhood or whatever. Point being, even after he started school, his main group of friends was consistently older than him. He very quickly adapted to that, and to this day (he's 12) hangs out with that same group, and considers children his own age 'kids' because he adapted to the behavior of the group he was surrounded with. I hardly believe Natsu would be any different.

And also

4. Quick little note because some people mentioned liking my portrayal of the Sandaime. I base his decisions/motivations (and Itachi and Danzo's to a certain extent) around this quote by Clementine von Radics: "It is so hard to live half monster, to hurt everything you love by trying to protect it wrong."

Pros: Watching Natsu just casually disregard the idea of gender with little to no thought is the greatest thing anyone will ever experience beyond, I dunno, the party we’re all gonna collectively throw when soggy Cheeto dies (I still haven’t decided which song we should make chart number one when that happens)

Given that I’ve technically read this three times you should already know the writing is fucking amazing, like, whoa, mind blown type of amazing, like, wow, so good, I usually hate rereading something I’ve read before, and especially so soon after the fact but geez Louis is this fic amazing

Natsu is just as easy to fall in love with as Naruto, and they are still the same people with slightly different personalities as is to be realistically expected with a situation like Naru’s was.

Also, GENDERFLUID REPRESENTATION DONE FUCKING AMAZINGLY IS ALWAYS A PLUS!!!!!!!

The author manages to convey a very realistic genderfluid character in an incredibly believable manner, while also still keeping Natsu/Naruto themself. They’re still the Naruto that we knew and loved, but they’re different too, as is to be expected. when Natsu is a girl no-one stumbles, she is a girl without a doubt, even the author doesn’t trip up on societal expectations, and when Naruto is a boy there is next to immediate acceptance of this fact with absolutely zero (0) Zero bullshit from transphobes, which, as a genderfluid person myself, is always fucking nice to see. You’ll have to read it to know more though.

Natsu running around creating seals is honestly the greatest thing ever, and the end scene with the village made me cry a lil bit, and dammit this fic is so fucking good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, there’s a scene, where Natsu heals Kakashi, and the way the author handled explaining the intimate not sexual relationship between two of my favorite characters ever is just, so subtly beautiful, the sibling-bond these two have is beautiful, and a part of me wants to cry sometimes when I read it, and usually do cry a little when I get to this scene, and only partially because of what happened directly before it.

I love the way everybody just gets up and moves past their trauma and just decides to politely ignore it, oh they still have it, they still deal with it, but they care, and they are careful about it, and even though it hurts them like a knife-wound to the kidney in slow-motion they still get back up and keep fucking going. That’s hella admirable and I can respect that, I can respect even more that they slowly but surely let themselves heal as time moves on. This fic is beautiful on so many different levels but it is this one perhaps, that is the most magnificent. Perhaps.

Sasuke is adorable and depressing and adorable and I love it. And Ino is still a bad bitch but she’s a kid so we only see it like a handful of times in the first two chapters. The Akimichi/Yamanaka/Nara are all great, and I occasionally pity Inionchicause like, he’s putting up with a well-informed seal genius that’s still hyper, a slightly frightening medic-kunoichi with giant dogs, another slightly more frightening medic-nin who isn’t the greatest fighter but damn can he be intimidating and also really good at pointing out “Certain Things” while judging you about them which, honestly, is my greatest pastime. Itachi is so sweet and then so tragic oh my gods, and Natsu never even considers giving up on him. Kakashi is so sweet, and he slowly becomes less of a beaten dog as time goes on and I just love all of these characters.

Except for Hiruzen. Well, no, I still love this particular incarnation of Hiruzen, for all that he’s got one hell of a pathetically small backbone, I get why he does shit. But that doesn’t make me happy. Still, he’s better than dumbledouchebag. Granted that’s not difficult, and you might have to actively put an effort in to be as bad as that guy, but still. Plus, his hearts in the right place, and he’s less about the greater good then... certain disgraces to teaching and being in charge of a large group of people... Hiruzen is actually kinda sweet and admits he has issues and actually has an excuse that’s understandable for the shit that he pulls which is great, if sadly uncommon.

Anyways, Sakura is terrifying, and I remembered why I had a crush on her. She’s so badass, also, she ends up Princess Mononoke basically which, honestly, is fucking great, and the best thing we could’ve asked for, I love all of these characters so much!!!

Aesthetic: It reminds me off beefy stew (We don’t eat beef, so we used vegan soy beef stuff instead, and it was just as good.) it reminds me of the warmth, and friendship, and home that I felt after my mom and I make dinner together with nothing but a little music on and jokes passing back and forth between us. It reminds me of scraping my knee and having my friends help me to their mom, it reminds me of loyalty and compassion. It reminds me of dancing outside at night, alone in the forest with nothing but the moon for company and wind for music. It reminds me of the first time I realized that I could love someone despite their gender and that I should despite mine. It reminds me of finely spun handmade lace, and all it’s delicate while also reminding me of the sturdiest of steels, it reminds me of so much. It reminds me of acceptance, and understanding, and so much more. If I were to say what food and drink it reminds me of, I’d say chicken noodle soup, and sweet lavender-lemon tea.

Q1: IF YOU COULD WRITE YOUR CHARACTER YOUR WAY IN THEIR OWN MOVIE, WHAT WOULD IT BE CALLED, WHAT STYLE WOULD IT BE FILMED IN, AND WHAT WOULD IT BE ABOUT?:

• I genuinely don’t know. Something with the grandeur of lord of the rings maybe? But with the ability to add comedy and romance in the proper way. I'm all for serious movies but I enjoy the ability to add a well executed joke or sweet moment. It also would probably not just be a single film. Taking the general events and using my fics as material would probably be fine.

I’d have to think about it a lot more than I will right now

As for the name, well, I don't really have many options. But, probably something with Final Fantasy XIV as the main title. Give it a JRPG title I suppose as a sub title. Sort of like Warriors Dissonance or Uncovered Stories.

Q2: WHAT WOULD THEIR SOUNDTRACK / SCORE SOUND LIKE?:

• Ambient, switching to full of energy, able to convey emotion. Again mentioning LOTR, the score by Howard shore is really great and able to accompany many scenes in such a fantastic manner. As for the other bits perhaps the addition of artist tracks such as from favorite bands and those songs that have meaning to him. Like the ones listed above.

Q3: WHY DID YOU START WRITING THIS CHARACTER?:

• As a way to work on and show that, a character doesn't just have to be overly reliant on tropes and cliches. That those are good as part of them but not as defining traits of them. Along with breaking some of those. Like how all protagonists always have dead parents, what's up with that? I enjoy seeing characters that try to break their molds and be more than that.

Q4: WHAT FIRST ATTRACTED YOU TO THIS CHARACTER?:

• My general thing in any game where you can create your own character has always been. To make who you'd want to be in this universe. I did that and then worked on it and reworked things until I got what I have now. So also, yes, he was a self insert.

Q5: DESCRIBE THE BIGGEST THING YOU DISLIKE ABOUT YOUR MUSE:

• Hard one I suppose but. I'd say how he is capable of doing so much. Even though I work with it as it is a key part of him, it's still hard to make him feel right, feel human when he's got these clear incredible strengths. He's very proficient at so many things some would maybe say he's a mary sue type of character. I make an effort to work on how he became that way to offset it. So it's a lot of extra work than if I had him being a more archetypal hero of his type. I may dislike this the most but I also like it. Love hate relationship you know?

Q6: WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN COMMON WITH YOUR MUSE?:

• A good part of our attitudes and personality though on his end they are greater generally. Along with our want to be as best as we can at certain things.

Q7: HOW DOES YOUR MUSE FEEL ABOUT YOU?:

• Honestly, and in my current state. He would probably be very upset with me and to just know me or the hand I have in his creation and self.

Q8: WHAT CHARACTERS DOES YOUR MUSE HAVE INTERESTING INTERACTIONS WITH?

• Alisaie Leveilleur – She is the main one being his main love interest, girlfriend, and wife later. Though overall he sees her as an equal and a partner, which is part of the reason their relationship grows as much as it does. Along with giving someone who he can trust in and rely on, and vice versa.

• Finn Hogveart - Who harasses Ranier often enough especially with his pet and regarding moogles.

• Alphinaud Leveilleur - and him sometimes get along strangely due to Ranier's relationship with his sister. For a long time he tried to spy on Ranier and make sure he was good for his sister even though he knew he was a good person.

• Cid Garlond - Ranier sees him as a mentor of sorts, along with someone that he can bounce ideas off of and work with on projects leading to a solid relationship between the two. The two sometimes bicker regarding their work but it's always just them being passionate for the projects.

• Gerolt Blackthorn – Similar to cid in some ways. Ranier looks up to Gerolt and his ability to continue making such amazing creations. Wanting to learn more regarding the processes means Ranier visits him when possible, bringing some drinks for him when he does. Almost having a relationship like bros. Ranier also sometimes has gone to try and sway Rowena on his behalf to lower his debt.

New Beginnings Part 1

Fandom: Love/Hate

Pairing: Darren Treacy x Female Reader

Warning: Some swears, reference to past violence

Summary: It’s been years since the Incident. Years since you moved out of Dublin and started a new life. Years since you last saw your childhood best friend Darren Treacy. One day that all changes and the two of you find each other again. Darren claims he’s done with his old life, but will it really be that simple?

Author’s Note: Dropping this now to see if you guys like it and want more! The story takes place after Season 1, so those are the only events you need to know about. None of the other characters are in this part, but they might will definitely show up later, and bring canon-typical violence with them, so beware of that!

It was raining again, but that wasn’t much of a surprise, you thought, closing your umbrella at the same time as you ducked through the doors of the old church. It had been grey and dreary all morning, the clouds looming low in the sky, threatening to unleash a downpour. You were just glad you had the sense to take your umbrella before running to catch your bus. The heavens had opened seconds after you’d stepped on, and it hadn’t let up yet. It suited though. It wasn’t like attending a support group for victims of violent crimes was a fun activity, and the weather matched the mood.

You’d been coming here for years now since you and your mother moved from Dublin after the Incident. It wasn’t entirely necessary now, but you liked the comfort of it, and on bad weeks it was good to have a place to go where you knew you could talk freely, surrounded by people who understood. It wasn’t an overly large group, and people often came and went, but there were a few regulars you knew well. You greeted them, as you hung up your coat, and set your umbrella to one side, chatting about how your weeks had been until it was time to find a seat and the group to start.

There was nothing you really needed to get off your chest, so you were content to stay quiet and offer your support to those who did. It was all going about the same as usual until nearly halfway through when the wooden doors creaked open loudly, interrupting everything. It was instinct, to turn with the others and see what, or who was causing the disturbance. Your jaw nearly hit the ground when you saw who it was that came slinking in, shoulders hunched high and whispering a quiet ‘sorry’.

Darren fucking Treacy.

You watched as he made his way to an empty seat at the invitation of your group leader in disbelief. You’d been teenagers the last time you saw him, and honestly, you thought he’d be dead by now. But here he was, in the flesh, trying not to draw attention to himself as the session resumed. He was behind you so it was impossible to keep an eye on him and try and get his attention without being too obvious. You weren’t even sure if he’d seen you. Doubtful.

Darren didn’t speak to the group, and despite your best efforts to get away from the others as quickly as was polite, he was already gone. Cursing under your breath, you dashed out back into the rain while you were still pulling on your coat, hoping to catch sight. You were in luck. Just down the road from you, Darren was walking quickly, hands stuffed in his leather jacket, head down to protect his eyes from the rain.

“Darren!” You called, taking chase after him. He didn’t stop. If anything he seemed to start walking faster. He should know you were more stubborn than that. You managed to catch up with him, grabbing his arm to stop him in his tracks. “Darren, what the hell are you doing here?”

“I didn’t know you’d be there, Y/N, I swear. I’d have stayed away if I did.” Darren didn’t even look you in the eye as he spoke, but at least he confirmed he knew who you were.

Still, it broke your heart. You hadn’t been allowed to see him after the Incident, in fact, he’d been purposely kept away, and you’d never even gotten a chance to speak with him, so it was understandable he’d think you still didn’t want him around. “I didn’t mean it like that,” you said, opening your umbrella above you both to stop you from getting too drenched. “I mean what are you doing out of Dublin? Work for…” you had to trail off, unable to speak the name.

That did make Darren look up at you. “No. I’m out, I’m done with all that,” he whispered. “That’s why I’m here. Fresh start and all that.”

It was a relief to hear. “That’s good. That’s really good,” you smiled. The rain was still pouring down, with no sign that it planned to stop soon. “There’s a pub around the corner, why don’t we get a drink?”

“Y/N I don’t…”

“Please?”

Darren returned your smile with an exasperated sigh and nodded. “Lead the way.”

Hooking your arm with his, you walked the short distance to the pub. Neither of you spoke, and you weren’t blind to the tension thick enough to cut through that existed between you both. It was natural after so many years and the circumstances of your departure. There needed to be a talk, but that could wait until you were somewhere dry and warm.

The pub was quiet inside, to be expected on a Wednesday afternoon, but you weren’t complaining. Immediately shushing Darren’s attempt to get the drinks in, you sent him to sit in a quiet corner while you got a beer each yourself. Sitting opposite him, you sipped your drinks in silence. Darren mostly staring down into his bottle, with only the occasional, furtive glance up, and you watching him. He looked older than he was, tired, sad. The years hadn’t been kind to either of you it seemed.

“I don’t blame you, you know. For what happened.”

Darren met your eyes for the first time since you’d seen him. “You should. I was there.”

“But I don’t. You were an idiot for getting involved with that lot, but I don’t blame you. You were a dumb teen just like I was. You didn’t plan it, did you?”

“No. No, I had nothing to do with any of that, I was just-”

“Following orders?”

Darren sighed, “Yeah.”

“Then there’s nothing to blame you for.” You reached across the table, settling your hand over Darren’s. “I’m sorry you thought I did, and for the way my Ma treated you when you came by.”

“She was protecting you. I’d’ve done the same.”

“I’m still sorry. You didn’t deserve to be treated like that.”

“It’s done now. I only wanted you to be okay. Are you?”

“Yeah. Yeah, I’m good.”

“Good,” Darren smiled, turning his hand so he could squeeze yours. “I’m glad, I am.”

You returned the smile and the reassuring grip. “What about you? How the fuck are you here? I thought with that lot once you were in you didn’t get out again.”

“It’s complicated.”

“I got all day.”

Darren laughed softly, shaking his head at you. “It’s good to see you haven’t changed, it is.”

“Not planning to anytime soon either. Now spill.”

Darren told you everything. Catching you up with the years after the Incident, getting caught with a gun in the house, fleeing to Spain, returning to see Robbie out of prison, Robbie being murdered, and his hunt to find the culprit. He told you about how his relationship with John Boy deteriorated once he discovered it was his half brother who’d killed Robbie. Then he told you about Rosie. The two had just started dating when you left, and it was nice to hear that he had someone to love him like he deserved to. He spoke of leaving her behind, then coming back to find that she’d moved on and was having a baby with another man. What happened to her, and how he sought revenge. And finally, about the retaliation. Getting shot and left for dead. At least that explained what he’d been doing at your support group.

“Fuck, Darren, I…I’m sorry. Jesus.”

“It’s done now. But…after all that I had to get away. I couldn’t stay anymore. And Mary moved to France with the girls, and I thought about following them, but I’m just gonna be a burden right now. I need to get my head sorted first, you know?”

“Yeah. I know. And I’m proud of you. You’re doing the right thing. Keep coming to group, it’ll help a lot, I promise.”

“I will.” Darren’s phone chimed just then, the other pulling it out and scowling at the screen. “I have to go. I need to cover a shift at work.”

“Okay. I should probably get going too, or Ma will start wonderin’ where I got to.” You got up with Darren and exited the pub, happy to see that it had stopped raining at last. You made sure to get his number, not willing to risk losing track of him again. “I’ll see you next week, yeah?”

“Course. It was good to see you, Y/N. Really good.” Darren stooped down to kiss your cheek, and you took the opportunity to wrap your arms around him in a hug. He responded in kind, both of you holding the other a little tighter than was necessary for a little longer than was necessary. After so many years it felt good to be hugging him again. You’d missed him. Maybe more than you let on.

“Text me, yeah? If you need a tour guide, or just for whatever,” you said as you pulled apart, somewhat reluctantly.

“Yeah, yeah of course. Bye.”

“Bye.” You watched Darren turn and leave, before starting to make your own way home. It wasn’t that late and the buses were running still, so you headed to the nearest stop, feeling a little lighter than you had that morning. Of all the things you’d expected to happen that day, seeing Darren again had been right at the bottom, but it had been the most unexpected surprise and one that you needed. Already you were looking forward to seeing him again.

Maybe things were finally looking up for the both of you.

Whenever I’ve seen u hate on Sansa you always point out her trusting baelish in s7 and her behavior with the Karstarks. Both were bad decisions but the reasons make sense. Karstarks- Sansa went through hell with Ramsay and she I think she wants to be strict making sure that the north knows there are consequences for their actions should they turn on her. Deep down she probably knows two children can’t hurt her much but since she’s been betrayed a lot and in the worst ways- she’s very paranoid.

Part 2- she is just falling into the bad habit of being overly paranoid. Next her trusting baelish- Sansa always ever since s2 knows that baelish is not trustworthy but she never had anyone else that seemed willing to actually take her home. Yes he betrayed her but at that point it had become a habit to trust him and to be manipulated by him. Dany took 7 seasons to acknowledge that drogo raped her. Sansa took 7 seasons to finally realize that baelish will NEVER be on her side.

Part 3- a lot of ppl also bring up the way she acted with the lords when they spoke abt Jon. Sansa has never been seen as anything but a pawn and now she’s actually valued by the lords so it went straight to her head. Also she did explain that the northern lords are always shifty and that she needs there support in the wars to come so she can’t anger them! I love all the asoiaf ladies and I think the reason some may not like Sansa is bc it’s harder to get inside her head and understand.

Separate ask but also about Sansa so I’m combining them (Anon 2):

You don’t have to like Sansa but if you ever become part of the Sansa fandom.. not all of us hate dany or hate every character besides Sansa. Everyone I follow loves Sansa and Dany and especially loves Sansa and Arya. Yes ppl ship jonsa (I personally don’t) and most ppl who ship jonsa dislike Dany but a lot of ppl that like Sansa don’t even ship jonsa. There are lot of vocal jonsa fans but that fandom is VERY small.

Okay. I am so tired of talking about Sansa on this blog. Why do her supporters continue asking me about her? My opinions of her have not changed. The first 3pt ask did not made me change my opinions about her. And I severely disagree with everything the first asker wrote. Surely Anon 1, you had to have know I’d deconstruct your argument in my answer, right? So are we to have a back and forth of you sending me anons in regards to Sansa, and me continuing to dig my heels in about her because I firmly believe where I stand on here and have canon to back it up? It’s kind of exhausting.

I will answer these questions today. But I ask that people stop sending me questions about Sansa. I don’t like her. I have never liked her. I have never wanted to be in the “Sansa” fandom. I don’t enjoy watching scenes with her character in them. I didn’t enjoy reading her chapters in ASOIAF. And I don’t want to discuss her character anymore. I don’t even enjoy comparing her to Daenerys and don’t see why so many people do because they are very different characters with very different stories and journeys but since her rabid stans (not the non-rabid ones) hate Daenerys and always make Sansa-Dany comparisons, I’m forced to do so also to refute the wrong and hateful assumptions made about Dany.

But from now on, I’m going to try to refrain from talking about Sansa as much as possible because...I really don’t want to and don’t like to. So again, please no more asks about her.

Anon 1: You admit Sansa is overly paranoid and that Sansa likely knew the Karstark and Umber kids wouldn’t hurt her and blame her paranoia on Ramsay and say her “bad decisions” as you call them - trusting Baelish and not trusting the Umber and Karstark kids - make sense.

Whoa, there’s a lot to unpack there.

Let’s start with Ramsay - Sansa is paranoid because of Ramsay (and likely all her other tormentors - Joffrey, Cersei, and Lysa). But who put Sansa in that position with Ramsay? And the position with Lysa? BAELISH. If Baelish hadn’t kissed Sansa out in the open where Lysa could see, then Sansa’s life wouldn’t have been threatened by Lysa in the first place.

It’s almost as if Baelish did it on purpose so he had an excuse to kill Lysa and further endear himself to Sansa. Lysa comes across as crazy. She nearly kills Sansa. Baelish steps in and “saves” Sansa. But Baelish only saved Sansa from the threat that HE opened her up to.

AND Baelish didn’t need to kill Lysa. She calms down once he tells her he’s only ever loved one woman. He could have continued lying to her but he wanted to get her out of the way so he killed her.

Sansa learns about Lysa being the one to kill Jon Arryn on Baelish’s orders. She learns that it was Baelish’s idea for Lysa to send the letter to Catelyn that it was the Lannisters who killed Jon when really it was Lysa, thereby starting the conflict between Stark and Lannister. Baelish doesn’t kill Lysa because he just doesn’t want her around anymore and doesn’t want to deal with her. He kills her because she knows too much. AND NOW SANSA KNOWS TOO.

Doesn’t this sound familiar? It’s just like with Ser Dontos. Dontos knew too much and was a drunk - Lysa knew too much and was not of sound mind. Sansa has witnessed Baelish killing both these people who know too much of his shady dealings and yet...she still keeps him around. WHY???

He’s also the one who sold her to Ramsay Bolton. Saved her from monsters who murdered her family and gave her to other monsters who murdered her family. Even if Ramsay was a stand up guy...Roose still plunged a knife into Robb Stark’s heart. Her father-in-law would be the man who killed her brother. That’s all kinds of fucked up.

And it’s all because of Baelish.

Knowing all this about Baelish, Sansa keeps him as her ONLY confidante. She doesn’t even seek Maester Wolkan’s council! The man who is MEANT to council and serve the Lord/Lady of Winterfell!!! We’ve only got one scene of the two of them together and Sansa is telling Wolkan what to do, she’s not asking for his advice. Wolkan would have been a much more neutral and wiser advisor and yet, Sansa never seeks his advice. Not on what to do about the Northern Lords, not on what to do about Arya - WHICH IF SANSA HAD CONFIDED IN WOLKAN ABOUT THE ARYA SITUATION AND THE LETTER SHE WOULD HAVE SNIFFED OUT BAELISH’S PLOT THAT MUCH QUICKER!!!!!!!! FFS I’m getting so mad about this. Wolkan was a man of the Citadel, sworn to the castle he served, sworn to HER. And she never sought his advice. Damnit this makes me so mad. How can anyone justify this? How can anyone say Sansa’s mistrust of people in general would mean she turns to the man she’s seen kill two people because of wanting to keep his secrets safe and not trust the man who’s sworn to serve her.

If Sansa is so goddamn mistrustful, she should have kicked Baelish to the curb. Not kept him in her presence whispering in her ear 24/7. How could she not suspect him of trying to play her? HOW???

Moving on....

On to Alys Karstark and Ned Umber. You say this was a bad decision but one that made sense for what Sansa’s gone through. I call bullshit. Alys and Ned are meant to be portrayed as children, Alys possibly of an age with Sansa, but Ned clearly much younger.

However, Alys’s age doesn’t really matter because Sansa treats her and Ned the same. She wants to kick them out. Anon 1, you say this is because Sansa wants the North to know what happens to people who betray her - which, hello, I’m surprised you even worded it like that because that’s usually the kind of accusation that gets hurled at Daenerys. So you’re saying Sansa is vengeful? She wants her people to fear her? Because that is ruling with fear. Making her people afraid of the consequences if they cross her and making an example of two innocent children - that’s ruling by fear. I don’t know how people can see it any other way.

And Sansa, who was a child with the label of “traitor’s daughter” after Ned’s whole ordeal, should know how children can often get caught up in their parent’s political mishaps. While she wasn’t forced from her home, she also couldn’t go back to her home because it was taken from her family. And yet, knowing what she went through, she wants to do the same thing to Ned Umber and Alys Karstark. I’m saying it was a bad decision...and it didn’t make any sense.

The people Sansa really should have been critical of and kept a watchful eye over - were the Lords who were directly involved with not coming to House Stark’s aid. Manderly, Glover, Cerwin. They were the ones who truly turned their backs on House Stark. Ned and Alys however are innocent, weren’t the ones who betrayed the Starks (it was their fathers who are now dead) and they both showed up to court at Winterfell when they were called to do so! Ned and Alys left their homes and went to Winterfell - likely at Jon’s command - knowing there was a possibility they may be going to answer for their father’s crimes. But they dutifully went anyway. Ned and Alys just by being at Winterfell in 7x01 rather than holding up in their castles fearing the Starks - shows way more loyalty and faith than what Manderly, Glover, and Cerwin did before the Battle of the Bastards. This has nothing to do with Sansa’s previous experiences with betrayal and Ramsay’s savagery and whatnot. It’s just plain ignorance and stubbornness. And it may have earned her enemies in Ned and Alys should the North get divided between her and Jon (not that it ever would, but just saying).

Now, Anon 2

As stated, I don’t want to be in the Sansa fandom and don’t care. However, I think you’re severely mistaken when saying the Jonsa fandom is SMALL. They’re not. They’re all over the place on Tumblr and have pretty much taken over the Sansa Stark tag here. I honestly don’t know how her fans who are not Jonsas or don’t hate everyone else, Dany included, can even operate on this site because of all the bile they spew. I truly feel bad for the Sansa fans who are kind and enjoy other characters and don’t post hate. I really do. I don’t know how you guys stay sane. It seems like an even more difficult part of the fandom to reside in than being a Daenerys stan to be honest. But I want no part of it. I am a Daenerys blog, a Daenerys stan. I love other characters, but Sansa isn’t one of them - though I will acknowledge her wins and achievements when it is appropriate because I am not so lowly that I think everything Sansa does is a mistake and try to hate on her all the time. I can see when she’s done good and has a win and I will celebrate her wins with the rest of the fandom because I love Game of Thrones and ASOIAF and if Sansa has a win, then that’s great.

Black Panther Review Articles 3

May contain spoilers

“Just because something works, doesn’t mean it can’t be improved.”

Shuri: Young, vibrant and intelligent -> the Carefree One Shuri is easily a favorite. Every character had a part to play and Shuri’s the one of untampered youth. She wasn’t naive, or even childish. Know the world, it’s history and being responsible for the technological aspects of her people’s livelihood kinda pushes those concepts away. But her brother has been able to keep her shelter from danger, from the harshness of life as much as possible and so while she has great capabilities and task she remains this breath of freshness. She’s a jokester, choosing her brother as her victim whenever possible. It’s her easy excitable nature that makes her so enjoyable- she just as intelligent if not more so than Tony Stark but has nothing of his flaws of grandeur. Her skills are amazing and she knows it but she never comes with a vibe of I’m better than you because I’m more intelligent. In fact get her to talking about her tech and she because more alive. In the film she’s allowed this carefree vibe that allows the production to present black youth as it is in social standings - you get amazing lines from her like the ‘what are those’ throwback.

“I am loyal to the throne, no matter who sits on it.”

Okoye: Controlled, powerful and responsible -> the Resilient One A lot of people claim to hate the strong black woman trope - toting dangers to nature forgetting that that trope actually was born from the many women who had to become resilient to their circumstances. The danger is not a strong black woman but the world that expects her to only just. Okoye is defined as strong not because she’s capable of maintaining her own in battle, but because she’s of conviction. She vows to do and so she does. Strength is sometimes simply being and or doing even when you don’t want to. A woman can be strong without being a stone wall of impenetrableness and the film never intended to write her as such. Easily on we’re introduced to her other sides, the teasing side, the side that considers her King a friend despite the boundaries that would normal eliminate such feelings. The soft edges of love. Although you bet your ass I’m here for the concept of her standing for her values no matter what and man literally dropping to his knees before her in repentance.

“It was my duty to fight for what I love.”

Nakia: Stubborn, determined and self confident -> the Willful one Nakia was everything weak people complain about (def men) - stubborn, opinionated, knowing of her own worth, determined and focused on her own desires and goals. These traits that black women are often faulted for having were not at all considered bad in Nakia. In fact they were her strengths and the exact thing that saved not only T'Challa but Wakanda itself. She the so call elusive woman, unpredictable and free but they don’t pull a pin up on her. They don’t make her overly sexual or seductive. They don’t overwhelm her presence with feminine whiles. She’s not there to be served on a platter to the Black Panther. Instead their chemistry is genuine. Old relations where the flame hasn’t died. She’s his confidant and his voice of reasons many times.

The ladies of Wakanda are beautiful and important because they are the reason Wakanda stands. Through the intelligence of technology, the strength of presence and the nature of determination. It’s Shuri’s creative mind that Wakanda’s foundation resides upon - the same technology they all depend on even in battle. Okoye leads the Dora in protection of the throne, its her single audacity to stand for that throne despite her own heart that stops the battle on the field. Nakia is a spy that has to adapt to every situation she’s placed in - and we see that strength constantly. It’s Nakia’s voice of reason that brings the white guy back that later stopped all their weapons from leaving. It’s her sense of right and determination that gets Shuri and the Queen from the hall - Erik would’ve killed them just because their loyalty is to T'Challa. It’s Nakia’s daring nature that puts T'Challa back in the power of the Black Panther. Wakanda would not still be standing as is without these brave women.

The film doesn’t tell you that these women are outstanding…they show you.

People say the women stole the show but that’s because they don’t understand the women were the show. T'Challa may be the King but they weren’t afraid to represent everyone else. They weren’t afraid to shine on those around him. I think people should understand this push of - all our people are important. The writers intention of show all sides of black people as we’ve never been shown. They showed you who all the characters were - that’s rare. Only the main leads get that treatment in most projects. But we know for us - black Panther was a chance to here about us and they took that opportunity. These black women - the carefree, the resilient, willful ones - they’re often bad mouth in real life, people ability to see only their flaws knows no bounds and yet the movie presents you with only their best.

These women were different from one another, they all surround the King for one reason or another but none stand within his shadow. They’re their own people and bring their own skills to the table.

Fashion and other important elements when it comes to women: The fashion was so on point with these ladies and it was not about the greedy eyes of men, it was not about the female form being sexualized. These women were not here to be anyone’s eye candy. They were beautiful just because they were. One of my favorite moments is in the beginning when Okoye tells T'Challa not to freeze when he sees Nakia and you automatically expect her to be decked out looking made up but when we actually get the first shot of her she’s in regular garb and has a head wrap on and yet T'Challa is still floored. It was a nice way to lead with the messgae that a black woman in her normal state is still beautiful. We were all pleased that they cast a dark skinned woman in such a role. They let her hair out and kept her in the wear. The clothing of the female guards are not fleshy and pretentious - in fact - when they tell Nakia to put on the outfit the words that were used was - its armor.

Danai is someone we’ve seen in this kind of role. Her work in The Walking Dead has exposed us all to seeing her in this kind of form - but, the difference with Black Panther is we get to celebrate her type of beauty. You have these women who walk around bald and they’re proud of it, they prefer it. I’ve said once that all women should cut their hair off at least once - because the experience of walking around in a world they thinks they get to decide what your hair should be and taking that away from them in every aspect is a powerful thing and has the ability to shoot your confidence sky high (trust I’ve done it twice). There’s nothing wrong with a woman without hair. She was more beautiful when she took off the wig and threw it at her opponent. We get to see Danai in this gorgeous flowing red dress that just looks like vengeance as she jumps from the upper floor.

My favorite wear came from Shuri though! Such diversity in her wear and yet none overly topping who her character was supposed to be. She rocked the braids but they showed just how fucking changeable that hair is. She rocked the solo bun, the double buns, the half up ponytail, the cropped back with the design - and it was a nice one too! She had the all white with the dress and sneaks, the belly design top, and then she had the nerve to be all decked out for battle! Y'all know she had that already prepped on the low rih? She just knew they were gonna need her on the battle field on day. She had her own weapons prepped and with accessories. It’s difficult to come better than Shuri - she was smart, funny, brave, and a fashionista all in her own right.

The film didn’t balk on showing these women’s greatness while not using it as a peepshow.

Woman can be deadly in anything. They can be gorgeous in any state. And more importantly they hold the autonomy to their own being.

Casting:

I love this whole cast - I’ve said it since the casting list was released. Letitia Wright was a new face for me. I’ve only seen her in one other production and that was Black Mirror - and I was super hyped afterwards because she is so phenomenal. She def the breakout queen, the love people have for her after Shuri will hopefully propel her career because she’s got it. seeing her and Chadwick play ff one another as siblings was one of the best elements to the entire movie. Shuri is one of the best things in the entire movie if we’re to be frank. She meshed into this character, slid into them shoes as though they were her own.

It has def felt like Lupita has been killing the game recently and she deserves it. She just brings so much light and fun with her. I think a lot of us look up to her confidence and her nature to not back down in this world thats hardly ready for a woman like her. I felt like she had been waiting to play this role. Like I said before - its imperative for women like her to be presented with roles such as these. Its only then that you can see theres no difference and we can deliver just like everybody else.

Danai has been my love since she first walked onto the screen In The Walking Dead. Seeing her kickass, seeing her being emotional, seeing her being so predominate in fandom was just exciting. So when I heard she was getting cast for this I was ecstatic. You cannot go wrong with this woman. I feel like she does so well because even with cast mates its not a competition for her, its not about outshining or outdoing. She just has this presence and she brings that to her characters.

I’m happy they went with these women. If they make a part 2 I demand they bring them all back!

Shin Megami Tensei: A Defense of Law

This has been a subject on my mind a fair amount lately, what with Deep Strange Journey out in Japan and SMTV on the horizon, so I wanted to give my two cents on it. Note that I’m in no way the biggest fan of Law endings in SMT games; I tend to go Neutral with a heavy lean towards Chaos, so I’m a bit biased in that regard, but I wanted to make what I think is a case for how Law has been kind of getting shafted by a lot of SMT fans. Oh, and spoilers for all the mainline SMT games out so far (SMT1, 2, 3, SJ (not Redux), 4, and Apocalypse).

TL;DR: Law’s not necessarily that bad, actually think it over a bit before you rule it out, and while you’re at it think over all the alignments if you care about that stuff cause they’re all pretty interesting.

One of the things that always strikes me about SMT fans is just how many tend to really hate Law. On one hand, I sympathize cause there’s never been a lot of appeal for me there. But on the other hand, for a while now I’ve been thinking that a lot of the reasons people give for not liking Law tend to either misrepresent it a bit or else just overly-downplay its positive aspects, which I do think are worth noting. So I’m gonna go over a few of the points people tend to criticize Law about and give my thoughts on them:

Lack of Freedom. This is probably the biggest criticism of Law out there, and not without reason; the games make it pretty clear that the critical aspect of Law is preventing certain behavior. The thing is, what people often leave out is that the behavior frequently being prevented is fundamentally destructive in nature: competitiveness, egotism, ambition pretty much all lead to conflict between people, and thus suffering. And while people often think that individuality gets lumped in there as well, that’s only ever really been true for Strange Journey and Hikawa’s ending in SMT3 (the former more or less turning people into automatons, and the latter fusing everyone into a single consciousness a la Instrumentality). Basically every other Law ending makes it relatively clear that the remaining humans do retain individual identities and the capabilities to experience life similarly to before, just without certain characteristics integral to humans as they exist now. But I do think it’s worth questioning whether or not those parts of humanity are worth keeping when they bring so much suffering (I personally do prefer those parts sticking around, but I wouldn’t presume my personal preferences to be automatically true for everyone, particularly when those preferences might just be due to me being naturally biased to support humans like myself), particularly when their absence would very evidently improve people’s freedom to pursue their desires and happiness now that no one’s desires would conflict with one another’s.

Murdering Humanity. Another big criticism tends to be that quite a number of Law paths involve killing a whole lot of people outright and also altering the remaining people in such a way that it’s arguable as to whether they could still be considered “human” in a psychological sense, potentially leaving no “original” humans alive. This isn’t something that I think can be glossed over, but I do think it ultimately comes down to a question of whether the ends can justify the means. If one were to assume that the world of Law is good and worth striving for, would it be worth killing someone over? If so, how many people? If those people would be inherently antithetical to such a world and would only lead to its downfall (and thus bring further suffering where there would be none), would it be okay to kill all of them as a necessary evil? I think these are interesting questions that are a big part of what makes the SMT games so interesting, and I don’t think there’s only one way to answer any of them. Another way of framing these questions is through an old picture from the 10 Year Anniversary book that details the spectrum of Law vs Chaos and Light vs Dark. Related to the former is this translation: “In other words, order and disorder. Those whose personalities align with law stick confidently with their beliefs, and try to make everything conform to them. On the other hand, those who align with chaos prefer the disorder that arises from the intermingling of all beliefs. To put it simply, law is stubborn in their principles and resistant to change, and chaos is flexible. Of course, neither are inherently good or evil.” I like this way of looking at it because I think it really shows how there can be very different approaches to these sorts of questions (which I guess show’s how I personally tend more towards Chaos) without those approaches necessarily being wrong. Holding strongly to your convictions and doing what has to be done for the greater good is understandable if nothing else, so I think that a Lawful approach to these things isn’t as inherently reprehensible as people make it out to be.

Serving YHVH. This criticism doesn’t come up quite as often, but I do think it’s worth looking at. It’s pretty much inarguable that YHVH is a massive selfish asshole in basically every game he’s appeared in, so taking a side that would appear to help him seems doesn’t really seem like a good thing to do. That said, what I think is important to emphasize is that Law doesn’t necessarily indicate an adherence to YHVH as much as it does the ideals that he’s supposed to represent, and which he routinely fails to do. That’s why the only two times he’s personally appeared he’s been opposed even by Law proponents (Zayin/Satan in SMT2, and several debatable characters in Apocalypse): the point is that Law is what’s supposed to be followed, not YHVH. That YHVH fails to meet those standards is a personal failing on his part and is supposed to show that those ideals are bigger than just a figurehead like him, and that following them isn’t as simple as just listening to the orders of someone with power. I’d say there’s arguably a bit more of a case with this criticsm in regards to the games where YHVH doesn’t personally appear, since in those ones humanity tends to more or less go along with what he wants, but that still doesn’t mean that he has become above approach with the exception of Strange Journey (where humanity is more or less brainwashed into serving him unconditionally).

Oppressing Demons. This is the last notable criticism I’ve seen, albeit much less than the other three above. This issue really comes down to how one views demons in the SMT games, which unfortunately isn’t helped by the games being kind of ambiguous as to just what they’re like on a psychological level. Their personalities tend to differentiate as much as humans do, but their ability to exist in any kind of peaceful state has always been debatable, and Apocalypse would seem to suggest that as manifestations of human thoughts they’re incapable of true personal growth and change in the same way humans are (although it’s not really gone into very much even in that game). But there’s still the question of just how true that lack of potential for change and inclination towards conflict is, particularly when considering the “demonization” apparently done to many deities by YHVH as well as how true any of that is for Lawful beings like angels (who are still technically demons by the SMT definition of the word), on top of the question of whether demons can therefore be considered sentient, sapient beings in the same way humans are. So as far as this criticism goes, I think things are just too ambiguous for now to argue one way or another with absolute certainty. As a result, I think a Lawful approach of keeping demons separate from humans and stuck in their world is understandable as a means of ensuring peace for humans, even if it’s not the approach I would take.

With all of this said, I don’t want this to come across like a criticism of Neutral/Chaos and their supporters, or necessarily as a sales pitch for Law. I’ve just been a bit bugged lately when I see people dismissing Law out-of-hand when actually considering the merits and demerits of each alignment is such a big part of what makes the SMT series so interesting. Even for someone like me who pretty much never goes Law, I really do think it’s worth thinking about if you wanna get the most out of these games’ narratives. If nothing else, I hope all of this can get any SMT fans interested to think a bit more about this sort of stuff and hopefully come to appreciate the depth in the games a bit more.

Charmed Opinions

Okay, so I’ve been rewatching some Charmed recently, and I kind of want to voice my opinions on some things because… well, why not? This is Tumblr, and that’s what Tumblr is for.

I’m gonna try to divide this little essay up into headings like “stories I wish were told” and “my thoughts on (insert topic here)” just to make it easier to follow. Starting with:

My Thoughts on Cole Turner and Chris Halliwell

So, the reason I’m picking on these two characters specifically is because they are my two very favorite characters, aside from the sisters. I’ve got a lot to say about their potential and what could’ve/should’ve been done with them. Let’s start with Chris.

Chris Halliwell

I think it’s safe to say that Chris is a fairly beloved character amongst the fandom, which is no surprise. He was a brilliant addition to the cast. Every bit of Chris Halliwell, from the actor to his interactions with the rest of the cast, made him undoubtedly memorable. There were just a few things involving his character that I would have enjoyed seeing.

While I don’t think Chris should’ve been on the show for longer than a season, it does feel like his time on Charmed was cut short. It could be that a lot of his episodes put him into a Whitelighter role, which wasn’t what the majority of his character was about. Rather than episodes of him being a sort of background piece, it could’ve been nice to have Chris’s role be more restricted to his mission of saving Wyatt. However, seeing him struggle to maintain his cover while also acting as the Whitelighter for the Charmed Ones is something I wouldn’t trade for the world. Still, I wish we’d had more time with him.

Namely, after the entire family had found out Chris’s secret of being Piper and Leo’s son. It would’ve been amazing to see Chris spend more time with Piper or hash out his differences with Leo or even just hang out with his aunts. Although, I do understand that this probably wasn’t written in for lack of time in the season, or maybe it was excluded so we didn’t receive too much information about the future. Nonetheless, I wish we’d seen Chris interact more with his family.

On the topic of the future, it would’ve been nice to see more glimpses of it. We got some nice flashbacks in “Chris-Crossed,” but those memories were isolated to Chris since the episode was focused on him. It would’ve been cool to see a broader scope of what the world became without Paige, Phoebe, and Piper there to save it. On that note, I really wish we’d gotten more of Chris and Wyatt being enemies. Maybe Chris could’ve gone back to the future for an episode to see if it changed, or Wyatt could’ve come back to keep Chris from saving him. Something like that would’ve been amazing. Well, that’s enough on Chris. I think it’s time we move on.

Cole Turner

Cole was probably the best decision this show ever made (give or take bringing Paige into the mix). The chemistry this man had with each and every character was amazing. I feel like most people in the fandom either love or hate Cole, and if they hate him, it usually has something to do with the fact that they don’t like his relationship with Phoebe. If that’s you, you’re not going to enjoy this section, so… maybe skip?

I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s ridiculous how well Cole fit into the show. It’s naturally a combination of great acting and great writing, but seriously. Not only with the sisters, but with Leo and Darryl as well. I’ve said this probably a thousand times by now, but it’s not difficult to picture Cole in a relationship with any of the Charmed Ones. Honestly, just picture it for a second:

If Cole had been with Prue, it would’ve been constant disagreements, all the time. The strong-willed nature of both of them would frequently bring them to a boiling point, often compromising whatever mission they were currently working on. But when they weren’t fighting, they were saving people. Constantly. It was the one thing that kept them together. A power couple for the history books.

If it’d been Piper, it would involve Piper worrying over Cole’s safety and not being afraid to kick a little ass to save his. Her nurturing nature would rival his risk-taking nature in the best way. There’d be a lot of compromises and a lot of discussions about how to make it all work, a Charmed One and a demon. She’d make the potions and he’d tell her what battle they’d be fighting that day. At the end of the day, they’d just be happy to have a quiet moment.

Now, Paige and Cole… well, that’d be nonstop magic. Paige would learn something new and be so excited to tell Cole about it. Cole would take her to the Underworld to kill demons. They’d talk about everything from Paige’s job to the rush Cole gets when he takes down a demon. There would never be a still moment or a dull day. All the time they’d be seeking out some adventure together.

But I didn’t come here to talk about alternate timelines where these things could’ve been possible. I came here to talk about the way Cole’s story ended.

All in all, I understand why the writers opted to end Cole’s story the way it started—with him being evil—but I still have a fire in me when it comes to Phoebe and Cole. I adore Coop. I think Phoebe, the girl who falls in love far too easily, ending up with a Cupid is very poetic. But it didn’t seem much like a whirlwind romance to me. I’m so happy that Phoebe found a life with someone, but I don’t think that would’ve been Coop if Cole had never been taken over by the Source.

I’ve always felt that Cole was done a real injustice toward the end of his time on the show. Phoebe completely stopped sympathizing with him, which is completely unlike her character. Hell, Paige sympathized with him more than Phoebe did in season 5. Not to mention, a lot of the actions Cole carried out during his time as the Source were compelled by the original Source. So, a lot of that time wasn’t entirely Cole’s fault. It’s was completely possible for Cole to be redeemed in season 5 so that he and Phoebe could end up together, or at the very least, so that he could die with dignity. I do get that the writers were trying to bring it full circle, but what they ended up doing to Cole’s character was a real shame.

Paige Matthews’ Story

A big thing I will forever be bitter about is the way Paige’s character was downsized in comparison to the other three sisters. Sure, she didn’t grow up with Piper and Phoebe, but that shouldn’t have been an excuse not to further her character development. Paige never got the spotlight like Prue, Piper, and Phoebe did, and that’s very sad because her character had so much potential. The focal plots she did have where usually limited to an episode, unlike the other three sisters’ series long plots.

Prue was typically a main focus for a number of reasons: she was the strongest, she was the most stubborn (thus the most likely to put herself into dangerous situations), and she was the oldest. That lent itself to storylines involving Patty (as Prue remembered her the best) or storylines involving new characters (as she was the overly protective older sister) or, really, any plot they could’ve written.

Piper always had Leo, from the jump, because Piper’s underlying characteristic is that of a nurturer. So, she always had a place in the story for nurturing her relationship or her children or her family.

Phoebe had her troubles with love, which seemed to push her to the front of every storyline, no matter what it was. Her relationships constantly put her in the spotlight because she either had forbidden loves (like with Cole) or she had complicated loves (like with Jason). Beyond that, due to her lack of active powers, Phoebe was often the character throwing out ideas or plans. She wasn’t ever a background cog in the system.

But, for some reason, Paige never got an overarching plot like this. The closest she ever came was in season 8 when she met Henry, and that wasn’t even an entire season’s worth of story. I’ve seen people mention that she could’ve had an issue with her returning drinking problem. I think it would’ve been cool to actually see her be a Whitelighter rather than just hear about it, maybe even seeing more of her relationship to the supernatural world and how she worked with them (like the leprechauns). Her role at Magic School would’ve also been interesting. Really anything would’ve sufficed.

This isn’t to say that I’m angry about Prue, Piper, and Phoebe having series long storylines, I’m just angry that Paige didn’t get at least one to go along with her sisters’. It just feels like wasted potential of a really strong character.

Goddesses

While we’re on the topic of Paige, let discuss my feelings about the goddess that was chosen for her in “Oh My Goddess.”

I… don’t get it. Like, I want to… and I’ve tried to… but I don’t get it.

I don’t know much about Greek mythology, so I won’t pretend that I do, but the Goddess of War? Phoebe and Piper’s goddesses make sense, and I basically explained why in the above section, but Paige’s? Paige is half-pacifist! And when has she ever gotten into a hand-to-hand fight, aside from the times she absolutely had to? I assume they stuck her with the Goddess of War because of the powers they could elicit from that to supplement the episode. Although, Piper’s powers were the ones shown the most as well as the ones used to take down the Titans, and Phoebe’s powers were hardly used at all, so there’s another reason Goddess of War makes zero sense for Paige.

Might I put forth the Goddess of Retribution or the Goddess of Youth for Paige? The former makes a certain amount of sense because of Paige’s passion for righting the wrongs done by others (which can be seen often during her job as a social worker), and the second makes sense because Paige is a beacon of liveliness and fun. I don’t know how either of these would translate into powers, but I imagine the first one’s powers would be similar to the Goddess of War’s. All in all, I think they wanted to use “popular” goddesses for the sisters. I just think the one Paige got stuck with doesn’t fit. Maybe it does for Prue, though…

Meetings I Wish Would’ve Happened

This is going to be a short list, but there were a few characters I always imagined getting to meet that never got to because their stints on the show didn’t overlap.

Paige and Prue – I mean, of course, right? I personally don’t think Prue would’ve accepted Paige right away. In fact, I think she would’ve been slower to accept her than Piper was (although, if Prue hadn’t died and the show had become about four sisters, Piper probably would’ve accepted her readily). It probably would’ve been similar to Phoebe and Prue’s relationship in season 1. However, Prue would’ve eventually warmed up to her, and probably would’ve taken Paige under her wing. It’s honestly really difficult for me to imagine, but I will forever be sad that they didn’t get to meet (on the show, at least; I don’t read the comics).

Chris and Cole – Don’t ask, I just love thinking about the chemistry they’d have together. I’m, of course, talking about future Chris. Now, baby Chris…

Cole and Piper’s sons – Obviously I wouldn’t want evil-demon-power-grab-bag-crazy-douche-Cole to have any kind of contact with Piper’s babies, but good-guy-Cole would’ve looked so cute holding his little nephews-in-law.

Prue and Chris – Again, this is another one I can’t really explain. I just love to think about Prue teaching her nephew to properly use the power they share. Or even Chris summoning Prue in the future to learn from her.

If you couldn’t tell by this list, I’m mad that Prue wasn’t a part of the series finale. I don’t know what was going on with the people involved at the time, but they should’ve made it happen somehow.

Relationships I Love

This’ll be another short list. There were just a few relationships I wanted to highlight my love for. And I’m gonna keep couples out of it because those are obvious (i.e. no Prue and Andy, no Piper and Leo, no Phoebe and Cole, no Paige and Henry).

Piper and Paige – This is another one of those things I’ve said a million times already. I especially love these two in season 4 when Paige is adjusting to being a witch a Piper is adjusting to Paige. I do wish we’d seen more of Piper assuring Paige that she didn’t expect her to be Prue, but their relationship was always amazing to me.

Paige and Chris – No doubt, this is my favorite Chris + another character combination. I know, I know. You’re probably thinking, “What! What about Chris and Piper or Chris and Phoebe? Chris and Leo!” Look, I’m sorry, but I just adore the way Paige interacts with Chris. There was a mention in “Spin City” that Chris and Paige had a strong relationship in the future, and I wish we’d gotten to see it. I imagine that Phoebe is the go-to aunt for Wyatt and Paige is the go-to aunt for Chris, and maybe Melinda is strictly a mama’s/daddy’s girl? Paige and Chris make a lot of sense, not only because of their blood, but because of their inferiority complexes with their older siblings. I imagine they bond over a lot of things. It’s just super cute, okay!

Cole and Piper – It’s hard to isolate which sister relationship with Cole is my favorite, but I think I’ve got to choose Piper. She’s like the perfect combination of Paige and Prue’s sass toward Cole and Phoebe’s respect of Cole. It makes for some awesome interactions, I’m telling you.

Stories I Wish Had Been Told

Oh man, I could talk about this for the rest of my life. So, I’m just going to talk about one specific story I wish we’d seen play out. Well… we did see it play out… but not the way I wanted it to.

So, here’s my idea: a power swap between, either Piper and Paige, or Piper, Paige, and Phoebe (in which Piper gets Phoebe’s powers, Phoebe gets Paige’s, and Paige gets Piper’s).

The reason I’m drawn to the first option is because Piper and Paige are my two favorite sisters, but we’ve seen Piper with Whitelighter abilities, so it wouldn’t be much different on her end.

That’s why I propose a swap between all three sisters. I think it would be amazing to see Piper having premonitions, Phoebe orbing, and Paige blowing shit up. It happened with Phoebe and Prue as well as Piper and Leo, and I think it was referred to as a “supernatural Freaky Friday.”

Conclusion

Okay, to conclude this massive wall-of-words post, I just want to say I love this show. At the end of the day, it can do no wrong in my book.
