I'm working on the next chapter for J&3T and I'm at 3738 words in the final draft and I still have over 1100 words in the draft, which by the way is just the dialogue with some very minor "and then he did this" notes. So 🙃 This is a long chapter. There's not a spot to split it, either. I wonder if I'll break 6k with it.

Would you have felt differently had they used a different animals in a different difficult circumstance like cats or animals not commonly associated with dehumanizing black people?

Apology for making you uncomfortable with this ask, and I'm sorry for having your experience with the show ruined by the writing choices.

I think I can answer both questions at once:

I don’t think black characters (ESPECIALLY a child) and their stories should be paralleled with any animals period. And definitely not an animal that is showing violent tendencies or having been on the receiving end of something violent.

Im sorry but there HAD to be a better way for Hen to use a work call to make the connection. Mara represents so many little black girls and while I think its important that her story be told, it truly sucks that the writers chose to go that route with it.

This world already views young black kids in such a vile way. We are dehumanized from birth. People see our black boys as grown ass men-and treat them as such-no matter their age. They sexualize young black girls from the time they can walk. they kill us with no hesitation. So like. to watch my favorite show and they introduce us to this little girl who is clearly traumatized and then do that??? I’m not media illiterate, I can see what they were trying to accomplish with it, but a dog? A DOG?!! Be so fuckin fr.

4. what is the plot bunny you’ve been carrying for the longest? optional bonus question: do you ever wonder why you haven’t written it yet and experience deep existential dread?

I really want to write a background and sidestory for a one-off character from George Lopez that Tony O'Dell played. I don't think I've written it yet for a few reasons:

a) I don't know if his character is named Blaine (dialogue and closed captions) or Patrick (credits on IMDb and from the end of the episode).

b) I kinda want to ask Tony about that episode and role.

c) I haven't had time or haven't sat down and focused on it enough to start writing it.

No, I don't experience existential dread over it.

13. talk about a writing experience that has pleasantly surprised you.

This isn't going to take long. But in writing my first fic, Is This Love?, I learned that I can write sexy things. This is the opposite of the "write what you know" advice. I have done research and will continue to do more. I've talked with others who have written smut. And I have had some friends read over what little I have written. As I tend to write out of sequence, I haven't published the smut and I'm still a bit anxious about it, but I decided to do this to prove to myself that I could. I wouldn't be upset if Is This Love? is the only fic that I write that contains smut, but proud of myself.

21. pick a writer to co-write a book with and tell us what you’d write about.

A fellow fanfic writer? Hmm, I would say @curiousdamage @missviolethunter @cecexwrites @rynnie-rynn @themaradwrites @avatarskywalker78 and/or @the-time-lord-oracle.

With Curious, MissV, Rynn, and/or AvatarSkywalker78, I would write something for The Karate Kid or Cobra Kai because that is the main fandom that we have in common. The first three were with me when I created my OCs and I honestly would trust them to write Julie or Alyssa. But all of them have strengths writing other characters in that fandom that I'm not sure I can do justice or write with the nuance they deserve.

Curious, MissV, and I could finally write that spinoff/revival-type fanfic for The Equalizer with Scott McCall and his OC daughter as the central characters. Or Curious and I could write a Cagney & Lacey story.

With Cece, it would probably be a story set in the Wizarding World with supporting and minor canon characters.

Obviously, a Doctor Who story with The_Time_Lord_Oracle.

And were I to write an original story, it would be with Rynn or Mara.

All of these writers are ones that I greatly admire, consider friends, have created some of the best original characters (I wish they all were canon and I would protect them to the end), and have written many of my favorite stories.

If you are asking about published/professional authors, I'm not sure. Maybe Rick Riordan, Richelle Mead, David McIntee, Timothy Zahn, Jude Watson, or Cassandra Clare (yes, I know some of the allegations against her, but she is still one of my favorite YA writers).

24. on average, how much writing do you get done in a day?

It really depends on it's a workday vs. weekend, how much time I've had to write, and how inspired I was. If I write at least 500 words, I consider it a productive day.

25. what’s your revision or rewriting process like?

I edit as I write, which makes the writing process longer, I'm sure. Then I send it to my beta. After I hear their thoughts and suggestions, I take into account if those serve the story and make appropriate edits. Then I will post it on AO3.

33. do you start with the characters or the plot when writing?

Honestly, a very rough plot idea. The characters are my main focus and I spend more time thinking about how to develop them and how they will react to the plot.

Let me preface this with "I'm not sure that I'm doing this right."

I've read so many fics that I honestly don't know. I'm sorry.

70. are you very critical of your own writing? how much do you find yourself editing (either during the writing or after the fact)?

Yeah, I think I am. I second-guess myself a lot. I edit as I write, so I might spend hours on the same damn paragraph because I didn't like the original word choice, felt it was too similar to something I had previously written, or numerous other reasons. I once nearly trashed everything I wrote for Is This Love? and lay on my bed crying because I thought I was being too harsh on Jimmy and my OC Julie.

71. how do you balance writing and life? do you ever feel overwhelmed by the amount of writing you have to do?

Hahaha. Balance? What's that? Ironic isn't it, considering that I write for The Karate Kid and Cobra Kai? Yes, I constantly feel overwhelmed by the amount of writing that I have to do. I want to be able to post two chapters for three of my WIPs by the end of 2024. I haven't worked on two of them at all yet. I haven't done any writing since early or mid-February. Sometimes, I feel like a failure because I started writing Is This Love? in 2018 and I haven't even started writing the scenes concurrent with the plot of The Karate Kid, while I've got friends and mutuals who can write, finish, and post a few multichapter fics within a few months.

Yes! Sometimes it takes me a while but I respond to all comments except troll-y ones.

Generally, I prefer to resolve my angst by the end of a fic, but I left Nub Saar kind of open-ended so I think it takes the star on this one.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I'd say most of my fics get pretty promising endings and I can't quantity which one is "happiest" out of all of them.

8. Do you get hate on your fic?

Not much. I get people who don't like/understand what I've done with a particular character, pairing, or AU, but rarely to any degree that can't be easily ignored.

Yes! I love a good, satisfying smut scene (even if they can be a nightmare to write).

Worldbuilding. I will put a stupid amount of effort into considering and researching the small details of things. I like to think this somehow compensates for all my weaknesses.

I am extremely prone to writing long fic. Fight scenes are hard and I frankly avoid writing space battles because they're even worse. I feel zero compunction to respect any particular aspect of canon. I sometimes (somewhat unfairly) use particular characters as scapegoats for my convenience.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

Coruscant Translator is a GIFT and I love throwing in snippets of canon languages where appropriate!

I always wrote original fiction until I found fanfic through SW.

I'm most proud of Dirty Bad Wrong, just because of the effort and logistics, but I don't have a proper favorite. All of my fics contain a piece of me and satisfied a particular impulse/desire, and that's all I can ask for.

Character Headcannons/Breakdown - Rook Raccoon

Okay, I'll be the first to admit this gets a little sad in some parts. I was going through it when I wrote this, what can I say?

* Her first name is supposed to invoke the chess piece. It's because she's basically used like little more than a game piece by Pyko and Gideon.

* Her last name is an homage to my dad's last name. He died unexpectedly while I was writing "Stand By Me", so I made her last name sound like his. Her taking Rocket’s last name at the end was a quiet way of me saying goodbye to him.

* She represents "found family" gone toxic. Each of the stories I do in this series is about love. "Flowers" is romantic love. "Star-Man" is the love that comes with loss. "Stand By Me" is about love and family. The Guardians are one of the best examples of found family that's done well in MCU, so I wanted to show what the inverse of that was.

* The school she goes to, Gideon university, is based off predatory colleges that were rampant during my college years. I had a friend over 150k in debt to a game design school with these practices.

* She's a sharklike alien because I really like sharks, you guys. Also I love Guillermo del Toro films, like most self-respecting weirdos and oddballs, and I think "The Shape of Water" is one of the finest love stories I've ever seen.... The more I examine my interests the less shocked I am that I ended up where I did.

* She's aro ace! The more I realized "oh. This isn't a one-off fanfic, this is going to be a personality trait of mine now" the more I wanted to be mindful of different representations. I also have a very longtime friend who is aro ace, and she keeps me really in touch with the fact there isn't a lot of rep out there. So it's a love letter to her as well.

* She's a professional V-tuber who goes under the name "Catfish".

* She's more of the software side of tech, whereas Rocket seems to favor hardware. I figured this would differentiate her skillset just enough that she'd be able to stand out as a unique character without too much overlapping skillsets from existing characters. This is something I try to be mindful of as well when creating OCs.

* Groot is one of her best friends and they do a lot of gaming together.

* Rocket DMs a game with them and a few of the other Guardians in it.

* She loves going all-in for holidays because her parents never really did.

* Her culture as a whole is very cold and very "get it yourself" from a VERY young age. Eggs take five years total to hatch and if the hatchlings struggle to get out of the egg, it's considered a sign that they aren't strong enough to survive in the outside world.

* There's a time where this would have been very relevant on their world, but modern progress has made this point moot. The harsh conditions of Icathia no longer exist, but the world has been slow to change from its harhness. Needing to rely on others is still seen as a moral failing.

* A lot of this culture comes from me remembering stories about friends getting kicked out at eighteen and being very, very angry that I was also eighteen at the time and couldn't do much to help them. Rook was my little way of being like "I'm sorry I couldn't do more to protect you. I was a kid too." I also saw a "fun craft idea" that was a "countdown" to when a kid turned 18 and would get kicked out of the house and if that didn't give me the BIGGEST anxiety attack to look at.

* Meti's first time going to jail was for Rook. He and Rocket were both arrested for brawling with her biological parents. <3

* Mara, her daughter, struggled to break out of her egg. Rook didn't think twice about helping her break out of it. She was going to break the cycle she came from

* It took her a LONG time to realize her parents and family loved her unconditionally. When she became a mother, it helped things really click for her

* She has Caldon's equivalent of a Masters in software engineering.

* Some of her favorite Earth music are things like City Pop and Future Funk. Also a huge Vocaloid fan

* Loves the beach and the water. If she isn't working she can be found hanging out by one of the ponds at the nature preserve

* She still struggles with her anxiety a LOT, but she's working towards getting better. She still didn't sleep for three days when Mara started school.

* She loves hanging out with Skye and helping her with some of her creative pursuits. This can include things like wiring LED lighting for costumes Skye makes.

* She lives in the apartment next door to Rocket and Meti. She makes enough for her own place, but she just loves being close to her family

* She's still puzzled/fascinated by mammals as a whole.

I have mixed feelings about the cheating situation. In one sense they’re teenagers and I think everyone in the situation had their reasons for doing things and reacting to the situation, but I really struggle with Jerome’s reaction to the reaction. He’s a kid and I don’t think he should be held accountable for shit he did at 17 for the rest of his life when it’s this minuscule of a problem, but there were multiple scenes where people made digs at him for playing two girls and he truly believed that it was alright. Yes he apologized I get that, but even towards the end of the season he makes a comment about how he didn’t mean to hurt them…I truly believe Jerome didn’t think he deserved repercussions for hurting Willow and Mara. I don’t like that. Do I think they went too far with the revenge plot? Yes. Cause I wish they would’ve sat down and talked. Mara and Jerome, imo, needed to have a long conversation about it. Not with Willow. Not with Joy. But just the two of them. Their relationship arc had been from s1. Jerome had that little crush on her that blossomed and it eventually led us to s3 and the cheating situation. Maybe it’s me not understanding how he cheated on her with Willow, who I adore, I’m just not understanding how those two had any sort of chemistry or connection, but I wanted him to explain his sudden drawback. Joy defending Jerome those times were valid but her in that damn bedroom saying she thought it was all about revenge. It’s like the entire house lacked brain cells that season. The miscommunication trope was wild. What i’m saying is I think the cheating trope was interesting to the development of the characters. I just really don’t think Jerome realized what he did was wrong. I love Jeroy. They’re my favorite ship of all time. I just can’t stand how Jara essentially ended and there was no sit down conversation being like “Hey, I hurt you. This isn’t about me liking Joy it’s about me breaking the heart of the girl who fell in love with me and who i pined after for two years” I just needed something. Those teenagers couldn’t talk.

see I do completely get what you're saying I do, and it's not that I disagree with you so much as that's just not really how things work. throughout the whole show, characters hurt each other and do shitty things because it's full of overwhelmingly human characters, but they can't just sit and talk it all out for hours in therapy speak until everyone is 100% okay. that's not how television works, that's not even really how life works. I don't honestly see how jerome and mara sitting and talking out every one of their issues would make either of them feel better and not more mad each other and it wouldn't be good television. hell, who in life ever sits down with their ex who cheated on them and discusses why and how and all of their personal feelings about it, especially two seventeen year olds who dated less than a year. I do understand that it feels like he should apologise further but the damage was already done, mara was too angry to hear it and jerome didn't know himself well enough to articulate why. I also just can't really name many shows where any (unmarried, childless, outside of a therapy environment) couples sit down and discuss in detail the end of their relationship.

I do disagree with you saying that he didn't think he deserved repercussions. he quite literally finds out that the three of them wrote a play specifically to embarrass him in front of the entire year group and accepts it and directs it anyway and says that he just hopes it helps mara move on and feel better. he does even repeatedly try to apologise to mara. he lets her say horrible things about his dad without fighting back and he backs off of joy around her as to not upset her further, all things he never would've done pre being caught cheating. he tells the house that they all need to get over it only when they're all being silent and glaring at him at the breakfast table because he still has to live there and he can't have every single person in house mad at him forever.

in terms of how he could have gotten with willow and his 'sudden drawback from mara', I really do not mean this to sound rude but like did you watch it? when he and willow first kiss in detention, mara had broken up with him like at least a week ago. he tried to win her back over and over (with admittedly hollow gestures I'm not like validating his behaviour just stating the facts of what happened) and she ignored him. by the time he kisses willow in detention, he thinks he fucked up too bad and he's never getting mara back, and so he's rebounding. he doesn't really have tons of chemistry with willow, that's kinda the point, she's just there and she's sweet and she's into him and it's a lot less complicated. it's only after all this that mara approaches him in the kitchen and is like 'congrats we're back together' and by that point he's already moved on from her enough that he's not willing to give up willow because he doesn't like either of them that much by that point. and this is not me defending him but like if he'd told mara then and there that he'd kissed willow even though she barely gave him a chance to, it still would've crushed her, because unlike him she didn't think they were done, she was just holding off because of the sisterhood. the whole situation isn't black and white, he didn't wake up and say "I'm gonna have two girlfriends" and it's a mess and that's the whole point of it. I've gone over the other jara stuff before so I'm not gonna repeat myself but idk, it didn't happen the way you're making it sound like.

and lastly, about joy saying "I thought it was all about revenge", the whole point of that scene is that both girls are lashing out each other because they're both broken hearted. it was the wrong thing to say, but it was an impossibly difficult and insane situation. and up until that point, mara didn't do a whole lot of crying and being sad because she got angry and stayed that way. the part about the revenge plotline that makes it so interesting to watch and why I liked it is because it was always going to hurt everyone involved and it was always going to be everyone's fault. jerome was getting hurt either way, joy was always going to fall for him, which was a betrayal to mara, but it was also an insane thing for mara to ask her to do in the first place. it blows up in everyone's faces badly, but both girls both eventually realise that it's okay that they're both upset and that it all only happened because of some incredibly poor decision making and that's that. the ending with mara deciding to put her friend's happiness above her anger is the most important lesson of all of it. also:

he does try to sincerely apologise for all of it one last time and she shakes her head with a smile and tells him that it's okay. the whole point of mara's arc is that she doesn't need that from him anymore, she's learning to deal with her feelings herself and know her own worth even when others don't, which is what she's been needing to learn to do the whole show.

tldr: I understand that cheating is a difficult topic that people have a lot of thoughts about and I respect that, but real life isn't therapy and what a lot of your takes tell me is that either you didn't really pay attention during their storyline or that it's been a long time since you watched it

i. sexuality headcanon: there's no way we can prove he's not a monster-f*ker. ii. otp: fucking therapy. a trip to scotland. chicken noodle soup. tentacle yaoi. something healthy. iii. brotp: believe it or not, i think he'd get along pretty okay with fields from my genderbent-tlh. she's been a soldier on and off a lot through the years. she grew up in weird-ass circumstances (if different weird-ass circumstances from elliott's). i think she'd get where he's coming from, and she'd understand the war wounds both visible and invisible that he carries, and i could see them hanging out together sometime once he gets out of his weird angsty "i am young and nobody else has ever felt my pain" phase. assuming fields is still around. she was born in the late 19th century. so. iv. notp: well in mare marginis he's playing boytoy to the mavka queen which. no. being the creator of this character, just no. v. first headcanon to pop into my head: he's really, really into cars. old cars, classics, sports cars. he saw the rockford files a few too many times as a kid with his mom and he's wanted to drive around bel air at high speeds in a bronze firebird ever since. he's saving up to get himself something fancy and in the meantime he practices drifting in empty parking lots and attends a lot of classics shows. vi. favorite line from this character: i don't have enough written about him yet to give one, alas. vii. one way i relate: i also like to go to old car shows and i have also seen rockford one too many times (and when you read this boy will it show, it's the only thing i know about LA at all) viii. thing that gives me second-hand embarrassment: some of the. uh. things that he will do for juniper over the course of these books. my man. calm down. ix. definitely a problematic character.

i. she's definitely demiromantic, demisexual. she's interested in one person and one person only and always has been. ii. believe it or not, yes, actually, elliot. it might be a really fucked up toxic dynamic but i can't see her being that comfortable or that vulnerable with anybody else. this woman is tense as a spring and fragile as glass, if he's the person who can get her to sit down and relax and cry the tears she needs to cry then so be it. iii. mara. it's a shame i'm pitting them against each other honestly they'd be powerhouse friends. iv. also mara. they'd be powerhouse friends but they should under no circumstances be a ship. also, mara's like sixteen, so. v. she has these little fingerless glovelets that she's always wearing all the time. she won't take them off, not even in 30+ degree celsius weather. she only takes them off to paint and she paints in latex gloves. her hands are always covered. vi. ahh, i want to give it but i can't because you might piece together the spoilers surrounding it so. sorry :( vii. when she gets upset, especially if she's crying, she doesn't know how to calm down. she can't figure it out. those circuits just aren't there. she has to get someone else to walk her through the steps or she'll just wind herself tighter and tighter. viii. just. everything about her mare marginis self. that bitch is over the top. she needs a rest from the melodramatics. ix. also definitely problematic

For Wedge specifically

The X-Wing Series I've mentioned this one to you before. It is a long series, but worth it. It covers a lot of the early years of the New Republic, including the battle to retake Coruscant, and also has a lot of the teething issues of a new government having to be built out of a Rebellion. Wedge is one of the main characters here, but so are Tycho Celchu and Corran Horn, both of whom I think you'll come to like. The series is ten books long so even though this is one entry on the list... it's also 10 whole books with Wedge in them. ^_^

For Mara Jade specifically

The Thrawn Trilogy Mara was introduced here, along with a number of other original characters (Talon Karrde and Grand Admiral Thrawn being stand outs alongside Mara) and it's definitely my favorite series for her. There's also a lot of thought put into the Clone Wars backstory here - contradicted later by the Prequel Trilogy, but a lot of Star Wars Legends books have that issue - that's pretty interesting. Leia is pregnant with the twins for much of the trilogy, but it doesn't stop her from being her badass self. (Wedge shows up in this trilogy and some of the other books below, but more as a side character than a main character.)

The Corellian Trilogy The focus of this trilogy is on the Han's home world (and home system) Corellia and the political climate being less than ideal (of course) when Han, Leia, and their three kids go to visit. The first time Han's been back in a very, very long time. For a change, his side of the family is part of the overarching problem the Skywalker-Organa-Solo clan is smacking face first into. However Mara gets brought into things about midway-ish in the first book and she's her own boss at this point and I'd say she definitely gets her moments to shine throughout the trilogy. (I could do without Lando's side quest to marry for money for so, so many reasons, but at least it gets him and Luke into position to be useful later.)

The Hand of Thrawn Duology This duo is the reason I strongly read Luke as aro and his marriage to Mara being queer platonic in nature. The two of them team up to dig into the rumored return of Grand Admiral Thrawn while Thrawn's former protege is on the verge of bringing peace between the Empire and the New Republic. It's never romantic between Mara and Luke they just... kinda realize they fit together and want to be life partners.

Survivor's Quest Luke and Mara (now married) discover what happened to The Outbound Flight, a Jedi expedition from the Clone War era that was destroyed by Thrawn. It's not my favorite of the books on this list, but it's an interesting look at the Luke and Mara as a married couple as well as what three years of peace between the Republic and the Empire looks like.

Other books

I, Jedi This one is in first person PoV so it can be a bit hit or miss. I actually read it before the X-Wing series, so it was my introduction to Corran Horn as he trained as a Jedi before heading out to save his kidnapped wife, Mirax. I had already read the Jedi Academy Trilogy that the book is concurrent to and is a bit of a fix fic for and... I like I, Jedi a lot better than The Jedi Academy Trilogy. Luke was not at his best in that trilogy, so Corran calling him out on a few things was rather satisfying to me.

Children of the Jedi This one had some interesting backstory for the Jedi and introduced a Jedi Knight of the Clone War era, Callista, who has survived in spirit form and aids Luke throughout the book, though she gains a physical form at the end in a somewhat... polarizing manner that is examined further in two follow up books. I found Callista to be a very interesting character... but I never bought her as a love interest for Luke so I wasn't too sad when two books later she headed off to go rediscover the Force on her own.

Dawn of the Jedi Set long before the birth of the Old Republic, on the ancient world of Tython, Lanoree of the Je'daii Order - precursor of the Jedi - is tasked with defeating a fanatical cult bent on traveling beyond the reaches of known space at the risk of destroying the entire star system. There's some call forwards that don't necessarily make sense, but overall it's got some fascinating world building going on.

More takes from my rereading of Fablehaven:

- Mara. There’s never enough to say about her, she’s such a badass. Probably my biggest fist pump moment was in book 5 when she’s leading them through the Dreamstone “staying oriented is my biggest strength”. Girl, I RELATE. I have a pretty good sense of navigation myself, taken from my dad. It was so awesome to see it treated akin to a superpower in a book.

- Nero’s massage in book 1 was so well-described I have actually given other people massages based on those methods. And received many compliments.

- Newel and Doren! Likable from the very beginning. I love Grandpa Sorenson vs Patton’s approach to satyrs - Grandpa mentions work to get them to go away, Patton mentions sport to get them to work. But these guys come all the way to Zzyzx, and THAT counts for a lot.

- I’m still on the fence about leaving Dale in a safehouse at Fablehaven. On the one hand, yeah, he is not the adventure dude. On the other hand - he braved the inverted tower alongside Tanu and Coulter. Broke both his legs, but he still went. And he full-on tackled a dark satyr in book 3 so that the others could make it to the pond. And let’s not forget about the shotgun. I feel like the battle at Zzyzx would be a bit different if Dale was there with his shotgun.

- Warren is still my favorite character. He really sticks his neck out for others, even when it gets repeatedly chopped. He leads the way through the inverted tower, through the vault at Lost Mesa, is the one-man rescue mission at Living Mirage, and truly gives every task his all. The description of Neil’s death is especially potent. Gosh, it gets you, but you also see how Warren reacts. He guided every single person through the chokepod cave and Neil was the only one who didn’t make it. And he punches a wall so hard his knuckles bleed. He really cares. And he’s also on Seth’s side, essentially sneaking him into Wyrmroost. Seth really needed an ally and Warren understands. Plus, he’s funny. 

- Maddox the fairy broker. Cool guy, been through hell. As a kid, fairy brokering made sense to me. Yeah, this is a world of magical creatures. Creatures. But on the reread I have so many ethical questions.

- The description that they watched the demon horde poor out of Zzyzx and into the fairy realm for THREE HOURS is what really sold the ‘horde’ for me. That truly is a massive amount of demons, and yeah, there is no hope of fighting that.

- I love unique solutions to big problems. Like slaying Siletta the poison dragon with a unicorn horn. Or the Russian Doll key/vault for the Translocator. Or the pod for Seth surviving Olloch the Glutton. It all just fits very nicely.

- The Sphinx is such an interesting antagonist. He is so PATIENT and that’s what’s made him so dangerous. It’s unique for a bad guy, in my opinion, but it’s largely what makes Graulus completely shuffling the deck so important. There was no other way out of the Sphinx’s plan. It was also interesting seeing him there as an ally at the battle of Zzyzx, and I think his punishment is fitting, though a part of me still agrees with Vanessa. 

- I think what makes Coulter’s death hit harder is that we see it from Seth’s POV. Kendra has watched several people die: she sees Errol taken down by a panther, Tammy flung off a cliff, hears Neil die then has to crawl past his liquefying corpse, witnesses Dougan get eaten, Gavin/Navarog get eaten... by the time Vincent is dying beneath the ice it’s no wonder she feels numb, and that they just need to keep moving there’s no saving him. Seth, on the other hand. Seth witnesses “Kendra” “die” which is ROUGH, but then he quickly learns that she’s still alive. Vincent is his first death, but he disappears out of sight and we also just met the guy. But Coulter... Coulter dies in his arms. And he’s not a stingbulb, he’s really dead. And we’ve known him since book 2. No wonder it hits Seth hard. No wonder he feels like this is the worst mistake he has ever made. These kids are traumatized, and the story doesn’t skimp over those details. They all have major trust issues by book 5. Kendra’s having nightmares. Seth is sadder, and more brooding. They save the world and it looks like they’ll heal with a happy ending, but they did go through some dark stuff and it left its mark.

- The concept of the Quiet Box forever fascinates me. Since I’m pretty sure it pauses aging (Kendra’s stingbulb is able to live for more than 3 days inside it) there is one other person from the Sphinx’s history alive - the jailer’s assistant whom he had put inside to free Nagi Luna. That poor guy whenever he gets out.

my S2 rewatch of HOA

so the thing about HOA is that the first couple episodes are always the weakest, it’s before the mystery begins and it’s not that interesting

i despise love triangles and the fact that couples break up due to misunderstanding so fabina breaking up so fast wasn’t fun for me

alfie was the best part of those first couple of episodes in his amber quest, the king tut outfit was iconic

i love bobby lockwood, sad to see him go, glad that it was for wolfblood

i should rewatch that after i finish hoa

joy’s storyline being completely fabian obsessed isn’t my favorite either, especially bc we see how organized and smart she is in planning events, that was fun, and we could’ve explored her having more tense moments around the teachers and victor.

though Klariza plays her with such charismatic acting that hey, Joy's in her villain era and she works it so well. im highly attracted to her when she's in control and scenes where she's just a plain bitch, like not signing up Mara for the competition. it's not a good thing to do obviously, still kinda hot in a villain way.

but anyway, all in all i hate making her into this almost wattpad-like character that is all about the boy and makes Nina into this horrible person that stole everything from her when there was never any build up to them being enemies. like never.

seeing her high-five mr. sweet was all around weird when you remember he was one of the adults responsible for her kidnapping

lets review some characters so far yeah?

eddie really doesn’t get the vibe that he’s in a boarding school with rules, it’s hilarious to see him make pancake runs in the kitchen and have victor catch him and him try to talk victor into it. he’s the newest kid so it makes sense especially when you count in his troublemaker personality. but still quite refreshing, i want to see him succeed one day, get victor to do a pancake run with him and get him to feel like a kid for once bc the guy is 95 and you best bet he didn’t feel like a kid even when he was a kid.

jerome is particularly interesting with his sister. he almost feels like a parent actually. poppy said so herself that she keeps his pictures on her phone because he was there for her, he came to recitals their mother flaked on, and he was there a lot. he tells mara he ‘trained her himself’ so he definitely spent time around her when she was little. and he takes her phone, keeps it, and if you rewatch the episode during the masked ball where she’s hiding and trying to get the letter and he feels betrayed by mara for her helping poppy do this, he sounds like a dad. he sounds like a dad trying to keep his kid out of trouble. and its really sad when you think about how he had to grow up fast. he’s been at boarding school since he was 5 years old, and the thing about boarding school is that it’s teenagers gaining some independence from parents, they’re alone more often despite the adult supervision, they don’t have their parents. jerome basically spent the better of 10 months every year since he was 5 without his parents. no wonder he became the way he is, and no wonder he tried to be there for his sister when she was growing up.

when he gets kidnapped by Rufus and he's fighting back, Rufus threatens to get Poppy as well and it's the absolute horror on his face that really sells it to me.

ngl, i feel bad for victor. rufus clearly sent vera with all the bullet points on how to sweeten up to the old bird and he is falling hard and fast. “smart and pretty lady likes to stuff animals AND she despises children? plus she cooks?” im surprised he didn't propose on the spot

idk about ya'll but i completely forgot about whether or not Vera really cared about Victor since i havent seen this in a minute. so lets talk about her. Vera's motives can be seen as though she's completely in cahoots with Rufus but really she's just a hired gun. he likes her, sure, but she genuinely believes that Rufus is insane. the whole 'becoming a god via the mask' is just too wild for her. think about it, from her perspective the Mask is a really old, really priceless thing she can exchange for lots of money but this old English bloke created a set of tunnels, why? bc rich people are weird. that's understandable, that's somewhat believable, the evil Senkhara ghost thing? pff, that’s going in the denial bucket. she denies it so much even after her frozen debacle. but even if she believed it all she wanted was riches in this life not the afterlife. and when he gets the wrong mask, he threatens to kill her, so she shifts her allegiances. get the mask, if this elixir thing Victor talks about is real then even better for her but overall? sell the damn thing and get rich. she might not have been 100% on Rufus or Victor's side, she was on her own side.

we’re finally at the chasm episode and they got the crocodile and i forgot this is where the rest of sibuna comes in!!! yeah!!

again, some times i feel so bad for Victor this season, can’t see that Vera is clearly manipulating him.

I know a lot of people didn’t care for the goose chase and the other goose stuff. but the line, said by Alfie, “Alfie knows people.” when explaining how he got the goose is top tier for me

am i the only person thinking that Mr. Sweet feigned knowing Jerome’s dad because he was somewhat responsible for him going to jail? like idk, they were all in on it and pushed John under the bus? otherwise, why deny it and act all sus? @frobisher-smythe @mask-of-anubis thoughts?

damn, i forgot how long the hathor challenge took. between them all being hexed and trying to do everyday stuff with the hexes. nina gets real pushy and unlikeable but i mean i understand, she’s seriously under pressure, her and her friends lives are on the line and she’s the only one who isn’t hexed so she's the only one fully concentrated on the task, plus she feels massively guilty for doing all this. it’s bound to happen.

i suddenly remembered they need a cowbell or smth for this task. ugh, im not gonna lie, this was my least favorite one. probably bc it was just so long.

Jasper stealing the gem and Jerome declaring war. I don’t know why but it’s hilarious. Jasper you have no idea what you’ve started. i forgot that eventually Jerome and Jasper team up and that was actually pretty fun. Jerome started it out because of the Gem, bc Jasper stole it and then finds out that Trudy got kidnapped by this 'Collector', they're in cahoots now and y'know what, Jerome getting into this sketchy business is very-Jerome. idk it just fits his character, both he and Jasper have things to hide, and it's still about Egypt and/or the Frobisher-Smythes so it doesn't feel out of place, it's perfect.

when Sibuna + Jerome figures out that Rufus is back and then they actually decide to tell Victor is a pretty big deal. i really like it. because at this point, it's not about the Cup, it's not about the Mask, it's about Rufus. and that's never a good idea to keep secret. so instead, they immediately tell him, they tell him the truth about Vera, and big reminder that the number 1 rule in Sibuna is to not involve the adults. but they are all so terrified of this man that they know not to keep this hidden. and this time it's Victor who screws up by not believing them (but can ya blame him, all they do is lie)

reminder that during the scheme into giving Rufus a fake mask, Alfie was given the ‘replica’ to give it a new paint job so as to pass it off as the real one. so, not only did Rufus actually have the real one in his hands, throw it across the room, and dented it, but, out of all the Sibuna members, Alfie was the first one to hold the real Mask of Anubis.

and he painted it.

ok so, random thing but i’ve got to say, Klariza Clayton’s acting is incredible. i love Nathalia Ramos but some times certain scenes are left to be desired. but when Joy starts crying her eyes out, even when she knows she’s done bad, it’s heartbreaking and even relatable. Nina however, has to be written a lot in cliffhanging scenes that end up being more silly than serious by the next episode. but it's just a couple of scenes, not the whole show.

so, Victor Sr. died in pursuit of the Mask. does that mean he went through all the tasks? if so, how did they all get reset? and where are his bones?! did Nina just summon up his ghost out of nowhere??

i love how they all have good and proper reactions to Nina getting lost to the game. Alfie's freaking out, he's scared shitless. Patricia is yelling and silently crying. Amber's scared with shock that she couldn't even remember her steps to go back and her tears are much louder than the others. but not louder than Fabian's. he is an absolute wreck, sobbing the loudest and angry and just— just brilliant acting by Brad Kavanagh.

i've got to say, having Nina be benched first is weirdly perfect. it was a red herring that Amber was going to go down first, but instead, it was the main character. and everyone's feeling that loss. and it gives Nina a chance to talk to Victor Sr. and get some exposition about being the Chosen One and find out about the Osirian.

ok, so the next time they play the game, PROPS TO MY FAVORITE: ALFIE LEWIS MANAGING TO NOT GET SWALLOWED UP BY THE GAME BOARDS HE’S AN ICON, PEOPLE. NO ONE ELSE COULD DO IT

the fact that Victor actually tries to call Sweet about Alfie's disappearance, and Alfie’s his least favorite last I checked (that or Eddie probably is) (some might say Nina but i think it’s mainly a rival thing rather than dislike) it tells you, just like when Alfie was immediately lost, Victor was beside himself, he refused to do this, hurting the students wasn't part of the plan. when you think about it, i don't think Victor really likes seeing children in pain, he was obviously abused as a child himself and then he took it out on Sarah, doing the same to her. he may enjoy punishing them with the most inconvenient cleaning supplies but actually hurting or killing any of them was out of the question.

AND THEN FABIAN MESSES UP AGAIN LOSING AMBER AND PATRICIA WHEN JOY'S THE GAMEMASTER BRO COME ON

FABIAN, MAYBE YOU SHOULD JUST NOT HELP?? YOU LOST NINA, YOU ALMOST LOST ALFIE, THEN YOU ACTUALLY LOST ALFIE, THEN THE GIRLS. NOTHING YOU'VE DONE IS GOOD DURING THIS GAME.

i honestly love how it comes full circle with Sarah’s doll riddle leading them not to the book of isis but to the key that led to the mask.

AGAIN the idea that Senkhara was planning on having Nina wear it all along— it’s so deceptively obvious but no one ever expects it because we just don't question it. Amber asks what Senkhara even wants the Mask for anyway, she's dead. it’s so fucking cool

i think as a kid i understood that maybe Senkhara was tied to the Mask, that she needed Nina or something to unleash her so she could be free and then they'd find a way to tie her back or banish her

I WANT THE ENTIRE SCENE OF ALFIE RUNNING THROUGH ALL THE TUNNELS WITH THE FAKE MASK W THESE TWO 90-YEAR-OLD MEN ON HIS TAIL

i finally got to hear the voices that Eddie's been hearing and the final one, "Find Nina," was Sarah's voice. (at least that's what it sounded like) that was so nice.

i also have a theory about Nina and the Dollhouse. what if Sarah wasn't actually watching them the entire time and Nina was actually unknowingly using her Chosen One powers? times where she legit asks the dollhouse for help, it lights up, after a while it feels like lazy writing for them to find answers quick rather than writing more clues for them to find. we've established that Nina can see the dead, she has 'the gift of sight' as Victor Sr. said. and Eddie can also see the dead, but he can also banish (and eventually have visions). so how do we know that Nina can't summon the dead as well? she constantly dreamt of Sarah, and now she's summoning her for information or help, only through a dollhouse instead of a crystal ball.

Nina telling Victor she had something for him and it was from his father, the utter confusion on his face as to how she could have possibly found this and her giving that message to him, "He says, sorry." as he holds it and weeps.

see, this is another reason to dislike S3, because when he's told that Nina won't be coming back he's glad of it, "she brought too much trouble" which ok fair, but you still wouldn't have gotten the cup because you had the wrong Chosen One, and never would've found the Mask anyway. she brings trouble for you but she's also the only reason things happen. and then he puts her down as being a 'bad influence' in front of Fabian the rest, and Fabian just explodes. like come on, the last time Victor saw Nina she was doing him a kindness, she gave him his father's ring. told him that his father was sorry. and the ring turned out to contain a tear of gold tHAT WE NEVER HEAR ABOUT EVER AGAIN.

i stand by being a Neddie shipper, because as said before by the resident neddie truther, @frobisher-smythe they have great personalities that compliment each other well.

I'm not surprised that Patricia broke up with Eddie, she's afraid of getting hurt so she does the hurting but the thing is that as a couple, while they enjoy bantering and have a lot in common, they could be foils for each other. kinda like Beck and Jade from Victorious. they're an iconic couple with a cool dude and a mean girl, but the thing about them is that they're incredibly toxic. that doesn't make them uninteresting, but very bad for each other. while i don't think Peddie is full-on toxic, they do have certain things going on like trust issues and lying (on both sides) and jealously issues too. and if you're that insecure about your relationship, if what you have with your partner is so fragile that you can't trust them around other people then why be with them?

Neddie had potential to be something huge and they couldn't even be bothered to explore it a lil bit.

Also, who’s each of your characters favourite TLOS character?

Hah—I love how most of my characters are just in the land of stories, so it’s more like “who is their favorite person?”

Cyrus’s is obviously Xanthous. There’s literally nothing to say there he’s absolutely enamored by him. His gay little heart beats for him.

Negative’s favorite character would definitely be Ezmia. The purple, the flair, the confidence—she’s got it all. He’d think she was magnificent and magnificently misunderstood. Also he’d be like “yikes, well mirror dust does that to you…” 😬

Aurelia’s favorite character would probably be Brystal. Strong, confident leader who isn’t without her flaws. There’s a level of respect the Fairy Godmother has and she got it by literally going from one of the most hated people in the world to one of the most respected. However, Brystal also suffers from depression and she can get overwhelmed sometimes and it makes her feel human and relatable.

Indicum’s favorite character would be Sir Lampton hands down. He’s been a knight for as long as he can remember, and Sir Lampton isn’t just stone-cold and responsible. He’s got a soft side and he also helps those he can. Indicum would view him as the ultimate role-model who does his best when times get tough.

Juniper’s favorite character would be Alex probably. And Gale’s would be Conner respectively. Those two are like a duo just like Alex and Conner are like a duo. Juniper tries to be level-headed and responsible but she’s not without her flaws. Gale is funny and sincere but he’s also not without his flaws. Grim likes Madame Weatherberry because of her guidance aspect and how she’s always willing to help others even in death. That’s some resilience.

Life would love Froggy because he’s an intelligent man who always has a hunger for more knowledge and to learn. He appreciates scholars and academics, especially ones who are walking, talking amphibians.

Time would like Alex. While she’s nothing like him, he would enjoy her realistic approach to most things. He would also appreciate that she gives up using magic and just uses her hands to fix things if she has to—like how she did in A Grimm Warning. He also would feel bad for her getting mirror dust blown in her face. All of this stuff he’d never say out loud tho. He admires her dedication to stuff too.

Space likes Elrik because he’s gay and he thinks Elrik is fun so it’s a good connection to him because he’s also gay and fun.

Nova would like Death. He’s biased to his son. (This is a joke). Nova would like Charlotte because of how great of a mother she is. He enjoys how she still tries to keep her kids feeling like they deserve normal things—like celebrating their birthday and whatnot. He’s also very parental when he gets over himself, so deep in his heart he would love Charlotte and her way of trying to keep her family happy and united. Also she puts up with a surprising amount of stuff—which he admires.

9. What's your all time favourite movie/tv show?

my favorite movie of all time is Dead Poet's Society, and I don't think I could choose a favorite show of all time because shows are my absolute favorite, but my top are She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Avatar: The Last Airbender, 911: Lone Star, Station 19, Glee, Supernatural, and Shadowhunters!

How do you think each of the characters would relate to their queer identity?

this is such an interesting question because it's hard to know if queerphobia even exists in that universe, because it's so normalized there and most of the characters are queer, so for them, queerness has never been the "other", but i think that if they were to be exposed to this world and learn about queerphobia here, i think it would be most shocking to Netossa and Spinnerella because they're married so to realize that their marriage wouldn't be condoned here would be very shocking.

I think Adora would be very proud because she's never had "parents". Her entire life has been constructed around the concept of found family, so queerness in that context here would be nothing new to her and would give her an opportunity to connect with her friends even more! I think Catra would be proud, but secretly insecure, but also defiant, because she hides her insecurity behind so many layers of deflection it's hard to tell how she truly feels sometimes.

and Scorpia would definitely be the mom-friend. She would find out that queerness was "bad" here, and immediately start adopting queer kids off the streets and giving them a place to stay because her whole thing is that she is a good friend, and she would wear one of those shirts that's like "free hugs". scorpia would DOMINATE pride parades.

as for Double Trouble, they would 150% be the life of the party at any queer-themed parties. and they would be proud as hell. they know who they are without a shadow of a doubt and they would demolish anyone who tried to make them feel like shit about it lol. i think the only one who would be really insecure about it is kyle, because well.... he's kyle lol

those are the only canonly queer major/major-ish characters, but in terms of my (very correct /lh) headcanons, Bow and Glimmer would be the queerest "straight" couple ever. and since i'm convinced they're in a qpr, they would probably start demolishing relationship hierarchies like. immediately. and since all the good pirates are queer, seahawk would take a modern approach to his...... passion....... and burn every billionaire's yacht

What is each character's ideal setting?

Adora's is just like. Anywhere she could have a sleepover with her friends because she's just so soft lol

Catra's ideal setting is....... wherever Adora is because she's so wrapped around her finger

Glimmer's ideal setting is therapy because this girl needs to process her trauma (bonus if Catra is there too)

Bow's ideal setting is a peaceful meadow. Perfuma's too.

Mermista's ideal setting is sleeping because she's cool like that.

all of my ocs are so dear to me but i think if i had to pick one, it would be zafira <3 she is one of my oldest too (i think this year she will be maybeeeee 6 years old?) because i have been playing with variations of her since my junior year of high school so she is like a true day one :') she is such a sweetheart and loves helping people and loves animals!!! she's sort of a reluctant hero and didn't really wanna be dovahkiin but realized she could use her powers for good :')))

i recently started playing fallout 3 for the first time since it came out??? because i rmr playing it when i was like 8 and being way too scared by it KSDLFKJS so i figured to give it another shot! so this is ms. mi-cha!! my lone wanderer and for my playthrough, she is half korean, half black (going off of the fact that catherine's game model is black which i never knew until i started going through the fallout wiki!) and she is a lil smartypants <3 and OFC she's bi (she dated amata when they were young teens but realized they were better as friends and they were each others first kisses!!)

MY SWEET BOYYYYY (i say abt a 25 year old man), deon is definitely the softest oc i have so far, he is the second in command, later the leader, of my first community in state of decay 2, the fragments! he took over the position after his best friend (and crush) max's mental health started to decline as a result of stuff he had to do as warlord (a subclass of hero in sod2) :( he is a very kind hearted man, always wanting what is best for the settlement and as a trader hero, he established a trading outpost at their homebase allowing for traders from around the region to come and trade! he also looooves animals and specialized in pathology to help create more plague samples and became one of the settlement's main medics! he is a very busy man but he doesn't care what is thrown his way, as long as it means that the settlement and the valley is safe!!

it comes as no surprise as someone who was once embroiled in arasaka's innerworkings and coming from a family who was thoroughly involved in arasaka business would be standoffish but after being backstabbed by a higher up in a botched assassination attempt on another higher up and having everything she had worked so hard to earn taken away in the blink of an eye, it's no wonder that venus is the way she is :/ but don't let her steely expression and sharp words get to you too much, once you crack through her touch outer shell, you will find a woman who wants nothing more than to be loved and trusted :/ she rly does have a heart of gold tho, she kept it quietly but when she was still employed at arasaka, a small chunk of her paycheck went towards a school for inner city kids to help fund their educations and provide teachers with supplies 💗

i mean. if you have seen saints row 2 in any way, either played it or watched a playthrough of it, you will see how much of a dumb (affectionate) game it is 😭 i believe mara is my oldest oc omg... this bitch has been with me for 10+ years?? that's actually so crazy to think abt omg... anywho, mara is the boss of the third street saints and is genuinely one unserious women. she is fashionable as hell and likes to appear a professional, well kept lady but she is anything but 💀 has been caught streaking multiple times on the beach during a night out with her crew, once got stuck hanging out the side of a helicopter during a mission with her underwear on full display, advertises open house free weed "tastings" at the university district apartment, joined a coed curling team at the university when she was younger for the hell of it... just a very unserious woman

i already mentioned mi-cha being a smart lady in her section but i felt i would mention her here once more <3 and ms. xolia my beloved... she is a benefactor for the resistance in my sequel trilogy rewrite and i can't decide whether i want her to run a nice nightclub or be like an art gallery curator that is able to shuffle money around without suspicion... but yes! she was orphaned as a young child and taken in by a wealthy family from naboo who later saw their oldest child become the senator of naboo and xolia sort of followed in her sister's footsteps during her teenage years, shadowing her and learning the inner workings of the galactic senate. she is a very attentive and smart woman and i love her dearly 💓

VERNONNNNN named after vernon from the kpop group seventeen and also inspired by vernon himself! he is a nomad and just such a little comedian, even though he is a pretty quiet guy! like when he is in the right atmosphere, around the right people, he will be the absolute life of the party. he is a major cat lover and is looking to adopt whatever cat he might stumble upon in night city. i think vernon and i would get along super well for all of these reasons but specifically the part abt being cat lovers!

Looking back, did you write more than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you expected?

That feels like a lot less. I had a couple of very dry spells during the year that I just didn't write anything.

Did you take any writing risks this year?

I started writing a massive canon divergent AU, if that counts as a risk?

Do you have any goals for the new year?

I need to finish A Flicker of Light so that I can hop back into my original writing.

Biggest disappointment?

The chunks of time when my brain just refused to write. I get very stressed when I don't write. Then the stress feeds the writer's block and the writer's block feeds the stress. It's a rough cycle.

Biggest surprise? 

Coming back to the Star Wars fandom after more years off than I care to think about. While I remember writing stories for it when I was younger, I don't think I ever posted anything. It's been a blast to dig back into Mara's character and be reminded just how much of my own style and preferences I actually learned from Timothy Zahn reading his books as a kid.

Most popular story of the year?

Maybe A Flicker of Light? But that may just be that it keeps popping up in people's feeds as a multi-chapter rather than a one shot that eventually gets buried.

What's your own favorite story of the year? 

I'm not sure I have a favourite.

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion

I don't know if it's necessarily under appreciated, but maybe Against the Odds? It was a story that I was looking for and that no one else seemed to have written, so I did. It did alright though.

Most fun story to write

I've been having a blast with A Flicker of Light. I actually started with a different father and son idea in which a Dark Sider had forced Anakin's spirit into a clone post- RotJ, but he's in states and essentially living out the life he thinks he would have wanted as a Jedi in the Republic with Padme, the twins, and Ahsoka never leaving, but the reality is that he's trapped there and doesn't know it. Luke, Mara, and Ahsoka find him and have to deal wit the fallout of Anakin coming fully into their lives again. The story never really found its legs, though, and A Flicker of Light became my focus. Honestly, I'm glad it did. It's been so much fun to write and it's helped me fight the writer's block in a lot of ways.
