I think the reason why there are so many amazing ships in Dead Boy Detectives is because the show manages to show different versions of love/lust/devotion through different relationships all characters have.

Like, love triangles have been doing the whole "a girl has to choose between two guys who each being out a different side of her" for over a decade in popular media, some more, some less successfully. But the pitfall they often fall into is that those differences seem very shallow and often ignore the other aspect of the main person who have to choose between the love interests.

Dead Boy Detectives makes sure to not do that.

When we look at how Charles is with Crystal vs how he is with Edwin, we can clearly see the difference. In the beginning of his and Crystal's dynamic, he is flirtier and puts more if a bravado, but he pretty quickly opens up to her. Because he sees that she very quickly sees past his facade he puts up with his constant happy-go-lucky persona. Only when he starts opening up to her and showing his emotions does their relationship progress. Because after David, Crystal needs someone who can be emotionally vulnerable with her and in turn, Charles offers her the same, and offers her a safe space.

In contrast, we see that Charles is more at ease around Edwin. They know each other deeply, and are also woven into each other at this point. It's easy, like breathing. One thing it doesn't do is challenge either of them from the status quo they have built over the years. But there is a sense of ease there, and such devotion. There is no question about what they would do for each other because the answer is everything.

That said, while they both bring out different sides of Charles, those sides of him feel intricately linked to one another! Which is why Crystal coming into the pictures begins changing Charles' relationship with Edwin as well! It brings to light things they have ignored. And in turn, Charles' clear and unwavering devotion and loyalty to Edwin prompts Crystal to learn it herself. To quote Jenny in ep 8, "you were about to leave and never see these boys again, but now you are going to save them"? And yes, she does exactly that.

This even has influence on Edwin and Crystal's rs directly, which I can't recall ever seeing in a love triangle before, at least not in a positive sense. But it's so clear that Charles loves both of them that the other learns to love them too, and they realize their own similarities through it, too!

As for Edwin and his many love interests, well. I know there has been a lot of debate, especially around Cat King vs Charles dyankics with Edwin, but the thing is-you are comparing apples ajd oranges here.

The Cat King is enamored, fascinated by Edwin, and yeah above all, attracted to him. This dynamic serves to challenge both of their characters' beliefs and shake up the power dynamics between them. Whenever you like the Cat King or not Edwin clearly reciprocates the attraction part, at the very least.

Charles loves Edwin and is devoted to him and Edwin to him turn, as discussed above. What is difficult about their relationship is that it became stagnant due to lack of communication, which is why they needed other relationships to shake up that dynamic.

But to address the most prominent comparison I saw, which is the Cat King saying he'll wait for Edwin vs Charles going to Hell to save him.

Both are types of devotion, is the thing. A profession of love, if you will. To this day, we consider Penelope a faithful, loving and devoted wife for waiting for Odyssey for 20 years. Cat King saying he'd wait for Edwin isn't any small confession, given he is aware it could take decades, if not more.

Don't get me wrong, Charles going to literal Hell to save Edwin and succeeding where Orpheus and Eurydice failed is an enormous success and a way to show you love someone. I am not minimalizing that at all.

I am just saying that, for who these characters are and given their rs with Edwin, they did exactly what they were supposed to. They expressed in which ways Edwin had influenced them and what they can offer him if that dynamic becomes romantic.

Cat King represents experience, patience. As an immortal he has all the time in the world to wait for Edwin to return from hell, because he believes Edwin is strong enough to return on his own.

Charles represents love that breaks all obstacles in their way. He goes to save Edwin because he believes Edwin deserves to be helped in the way he helps others. He deserves to be saved.

My point is, there is no better of worse way of loving someone. The character in the love triangle choose the person that better alignes with who they are and who they wish to be as a person. So yes, you are absolutely allowed to say "I think this character would choose person a because it alignes better with their character development" but comparing the two as one being superior is kinda pointless imo? Exploring different dynamic of a character is the goal here, right? Either through canon or fanon.

...I was gonna talk about Crystal/Niko and Edwin/Monty too but this post got away from me to uhh. Might do another one if anyone is interested but in their way! I adore the way DBDA explores different sides of characters while still making them feel like a fully rounded person and doesn't shy away from letting one rs influence other rs character has.

I just adore lucifer and his relationship with charlie and the way they are getting closer during the episode and how charlie is literally dad's daughter and their song is absolutely adorable

alastor and lucifer's duo is iconic as hell(haha)

AND of course this little fun fact of alastor also being on someone's leash that's great and I love how there are more and more mysteries coming out

despite the fact that alastor's confrontation with lucifer about charlie's father figure is most likely manipulation from alastor I hope we see more, you know, human qualities of alastor and learn more about him

I mean we've got this man swore so I don't think it's a big deal now

despite my sympathy for alastor though... PLEASE NOT HUSK damn alastor got him shaking, poor cat man:(

i love how after ep4 huskerdust are doing this little things like sharing popcorn and giving each other soft looks and stuff that's really good for them and I'm glad they're taking this slow

AND EP 6 OMG

let's just say I'm happy to see that neither all demons or all angels are dicks

and YASSS I adore character development and the way hotel's crew become a family for each other

like the way they try to protect each other in ep5 during the attack or them just having nice time together, you know

also I loved this tiny detail that now, in ep6 angel now is able to openly tell about how hard was his day and have a rest not being afraid of looking weak/not always sexy as fuck AND omg these scene in a club where angel stands up against valen(pls die)tino and calls hotel's crew his friends got me emotional. boy made big progress

and as huskerdust fan I can't help but love the way husker helps angel make right delicious and supports him (these bitches gay, good for them)

I love Izuku's blatant show of emotional vulnerability throughout the series. yeah he's a crybaby/nerd/impulsive martyr but for someone who's been relentlessly bullied for so many years he is ridiculously open about his feelings and I admire him so much for it

"I am scared for you, for everyone and what risking everything could do to me, so I will stay away even if it costs me my smile, even if it drains me of all life"

Like hello?? this boy is so exhausted, halfway to death's door and fighting off an actual army of frenemies and still, still cannot bring himself to close his heart, the worst he can think to say is "you can't keep up" and apologises for that too. he doesn't even think to push them away like he should and I *ugly sobs*

Ohh the relief. the satisfaction. the completion of a circle literally years in the making.

and Izuku's reaction is just the icing on the cake. I was genuinely worried they might downplay this scene after the whole OP fiasco (Bokurano by Eve is a banger btw) but Bones did not disSAPOINT

look at them. look at Katsuki. head bowed, face-to-face in front of everyone, openly admitting to the horrible things he said, things he did to Izuku in the softest voice we've ever heard from him, running to catch him in the rain and not once asking for forgiveness, only that Izuku come home with him, with them all

when Izuku goes vigilante he's so focused on defeating All For One he completely switches from 'save to win' to 'win to save'. ofc he's doing it to protect everyone but that's not the objective anymore, it's the result.

whereas Katsuki is so fixated on bringing Izuku's overworked dumbass back he doesn't even think about AFO let alone defeating him. his defining moral also does a 180 & becomes 'save to win' instead like ASBHSDHSJDKFS DO YOU GUYS SEE WHAT I MEAN IS THE BRAIN BRAINING TO MY BKDKS??!

The clock on the wall of the restaurant was still showing the same time, for the third time Mhok had checked. He glanced down at his phone - no, it hadn't broken; Mhok was just impatient. And his phone screen was blank as ever.

He sighed, and returned to mopping the floor. Maybe all of this hard work would get him a raise soon, if his new boss noticed. That would be worth it.

His pocket began buzzing, and Mhok felt a fond smile beginning before he even had the phone out. Sure enough, the screen was lit with his boyfriend’s name.

"Good evening," he said, warm and low into the receiver. "If you'd like to place an order, I'm sorry, but the restaurant is closed."

Something in Mhok seemed to settle and relax, just hearing his boyfriend’s voice on the other end of the line. "I'm sorry, Phi," said Day, explaining about his family and the unexpected change of their plans.

Mhok had guessed that it would be something like this; actually, it could have been worse. He should probably feel grateful Day could call at all. He hummed, and told him not to worry. "I'll just have to be better next year," he murmured, with a self-deprecating smirk, "so Santa will be nicer to me."

Day's voice dipped a little lower. "Let's say that Santa is listening right now," said the younger boy. "What would you ask for?"

Mhok barely hesitated, certain of the only thing he wanted - the thing he'd want even if he had everything else in the world. "I'd want to be with you right now," he almost whispered, with the ghost of a sigh.

"...The moon is beautiful tonight. Wouldn't you say?"

Jokes aside, I find myself more and more intrigued by what they're doing with Izzy this season.

The new eps have confirmed to me that Izzy is literally not that deep, and that's on purpose. Compared to the others, he is distinctly undercomplex, one-dimensional even; he doesn't have little fun or surprising things about him, he seems complex on the surface, but the more we get to know him, the more it's confirmed that he's just an asshole and nothing much more to it.

This is because he's there as a comment on toxic white masculinity. He's not the only character like this; but while others (Father Bonnet, Father Teach, the Badmintons) are there to condemn the abusiveness and violence of it, Izzy is there to ridicule it.

Which is an equally powerful thing to do.

That's why he's always the butt of the joke, why we are never invited to empathize with him. ofmd draws the line between drama and comedy at emotional pain. Physical pain is played for laughs, and Izzy's pain is only ever physical. The narrative doesn't take him serious at all, openly laughs at him and invites us to laugh at him, too. Is even cruel to him, at times, because he's not really supposed to be a person. He's a stereotype.

And I think we can see in the discourse how unusual and counterintuitive this is. We are not used to seeing a character that ticks all the boxes Izzy does in that role: comic relief and mascot. Not used to guys like Izzy being the ones who are dehumanized.

This is why it feels to me like he's getting rehabilitated instead of redeemed; he just doesn't have the depth for his actions to have enough moral weight to warrant redemption. You wouldn't expect a bitey terrier to apologize for taking a chunk out of your face, would you? That's where Izzy is at. The way he's treated right now to me feels benevolent, but condescending; he's gently fed treats to teach him that people can be friends, but behavioral euthanasia isn't off the table yet (and we won't be heartbrokem should it come to that).

They aren't trying to redeem him, they're trying to make him a real boy.

And yeah, that can be criticized, but embedded in the broader context of what ofmd has to say about authenticity and oppressive power structures, I find this approach fascinating. How do you rebuild a personality after a lifetime of compliance? And is it even possible to gain enough self awareness to realize that's what you need to do?

If what you want from an Izzy arc is a heartfelt apology, for him to see the error of his ways and make amends for his wrongdoing, I don't think we're going to get that. I think the narrative has very limited time and more important things to spend it on, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing. So far, they mostly seem to enjoy putting Izzy in a jar and shaking it, and I for one am here for it.

I literally thought about it yesterday when writing the next chapter—that now that I have all this new information and images of Aemond in my head, it’s kinda hard to shake them off and go back to my Aemond, Aemond we all grew to love over the course of 300k+words of ‘Tides’... Because the show is definitely going down the villain route for him, and while I personally don’t have an issue with that, it’s just so... Different?

Okay, I’m rambling, back to your question.

To get it out of the way—and MASSIVE SPOILER in case someone reading this hasn’t watched the show/last ep yet—Aemond burning Aegon had me shaking fists at my TV screen at 4AM. I suspected it was coming, as the writers were building the whole brotherly feud since season 1, and I still. was. so. pissed. And I have no love for Aegon, but after they painted Aemond as this strategic mind behind Cole’s campaign, I expected our smart guy to be actually smart, and burning his brother’s dragon when their side already lacks them... Yeah, great planning.

Of course, I get that in Aemond’s head, he thinks that he rides the largest dragon of all and by extent is invincible and doesn’t need anyone else to win the war, and that his emotions get the best of him, but—“This war will not be won with dragons alone, but with dragons flying behind armies of men.” What dragons, Aemond dear? Plural? Are you sure? Counting that the show already mentioned Daeron twice, we might actually see him on screen, but as for now the greens have Vhagar and Dreamfyre, and unless they armor-up Helaena and make a second Visenya out of her, I don’t think Aemond understands the repercussions of his actions.

I feel like everyone and their mother is shouting atop of their lungs that Aemond is the one true Targaryen, that he respects his ancestors, he never skipped a High Valyrian lesson on duolingo, Aemond this, Aemond that, but excusez-moi—he had already. Killed/wounded. Three dragons. The sacred sygil of his house. And he didn’t give a f4ck. And I think that he saw Cole planning to cut Meleys’ head to drag it to King’s Landing and just went “meh, not my problem, not my monkeys, I am regent now and that’s all I care about.” Gr-r-r-r.

But to be honest, I actually expected to be far angrier with him than I actually am. Because Aemond isn’t just a plain villain. He is complex, and I do love him for it. His weird attachment to that madam clearly indicates that our boy has serious mommy-issues; he has no friends (if you don’t count Cole, and I never count Cole); his big brother won’t stop bullying him even after Aemond had bested him in everything but getting the crown (which still isn’t good enough reason to unalive Aegon, but this is Westeros and I get it); and he, apparently, does “regret that business with Luke”, which I think is the most sincere thing that came out of his mouth this season.

Aemond has an odd relationship with every person in his life, even his family, and I believe that makes him who he is. He is a circus tiger that has been caged his whole life, and now he broke through the bars and is—understandably—lashing out. War brings out either the best or the worst in people, and in show-Aemond’s case, it’s definitely the worst. Which makes sense, counting what we know about him from canon.

I wish I could say that I trust the writers of HoTD to do their thing, but I really don’t. I do hope they won’t butcher the story and its characters, though.

So I guess I still have very mixed feelings about show-Aemond? All his contradictory character traits make Aemond an incredibly interesting person—and yep, it helps that he literally put the SLAY in kinslayer, because MAN is he gorgeous. Ewan was born to play him, and I’ll never stop saying that, because every time he talks about his character, I pause everything I’m doing to just... listen.

Nicole told him he's sleep walking because of stress and that he should make his life 'simpler' BUT literally EVERYBODY keeps asking him for help all at once he became so stressed and started being clumsy and not pay attention which is completely out of character for him, jessy asks him if he's been sleeping and that he looks worn down and that something is wrong with him, loses control over his powers, everyone got so concerned for him cuz he kept making horrendous mistakes and told him to get some rest. He'd wake up and find that he drew dozens of stuff and he didn't even realise he fell asleep. Turns out using his powers to heal that person is what took a toll on his body. Overwhelmed by sensory stuff and things are too loud for him he feels pain, holds his head in pain and uses his powers involuntarily and it causes a mini fire

Ep22: uses his powers to resuscitate jessy and says if he fails it could kill both of them, succeeds then collapses

Ep1: electrocuted and passes out, kidnapped, half awake in the ambulance and muttering "amanda" then injected with a sedative i guess, wakes up strapped to a bed with iv on and hooked up to some machines, tries to free himself but can't rip the straps. Takes a fake bullet for someone and falls unconscious on the ground (he didn't know it was fake), woke up on the floor and some men sit him up on a chair and he's still trying to process what's going on and his vision is starting to clear

Ep2: nightmare and wakes up startled. Amanda getting kidnapped messed him up and made him so anxious about her he kepy having nightmares, she left his sight for 1 min and he freaked out and started screaming for her (her reaction to it was hilarious she got freaked out that he got freaked out and was like WHAT???!!! 😂😂😂😂). Suuuper anxious all day cuz the psychic told him something bad will happen to his soul mate

Ep3: crying

Ep4: depressed over amanda and everybody is trying to help him move on 😂. Super drunk (to forget amanda), clumsy and close to getting himself into trouble at the bar cuz of his innocence and lack of social knowledge (it was so cute "i love you" 😂😂😂😂) and blurting out all his secrets in front of everyone, swaying, helped to walk, says he feels really sick and throws up. Receives bad news and tears up

I saw in the tags on one of your posts that people often mistake Viserys' cowardice for stupidity, and I AGREE.

1) It's so funny to me how Viserys openly talks about being afraid of hard conversations with his daughter. I'm sure it's a common joke amongst fathers given the time and place, but Viserys is really not joking. But in reality, when he does take the time to explain his thinking and be transparent with her, she's quite amenable to what he's saying. It's a vicious cycle of hiding things from Rhaenyra, discussing things with everyone BUT Rhaenyra, blindsiding Rhaenyra, and then provoking the very reaction he was trying to prevent. And he literally NEVER gets it!!!! She literally just wants a heads up, especially when it concerns life-altering decisions about her own life. She just wants to be asked for her opinion, even if the answer is no, just ASK.

2) I believe part of his reason (HOTD), in many different ways, for choosing Alicent is cowardice. He feels bullied by Corlys. He feels their offer to join their houses is almost an indictment of his legitimacy. But instead of privately declining the offer, he publicly slights his daughter. That was petty, Viserys.

Also! That "proud men don't like looking up" conversation with Lyonel was Viserys flirting, and you can't tell me Lyonel wasn't picking up the vibe.

3) It's kinda sad to me how most of Viserys' physical affection just...isn't returned. Except for Aemma, it's like 60/40 chance that a gesture is gonna be returned. Thinking mostly of the scene after Joffrey's birth where Viserys has white knuckle grip on Rhaenyra's hand, and she's just kind of holding it there in a limp fist. He even has to shake her arm a little to get her attention back. Also, it took six episodes to get a hug from the two of them???? And I don't think it's a mistake that Viserys is most affectionate with her when she's so explicitly maternal, right down to wearing her mother's Arryn colors.

yeah!! like viserys isnt stupid, he knows that theres some fighting there. i think he just underestimates how bad it is? just assumes its childhood rivalries that theyll grow out of? and thats why he makes his kids and grandkids kids start training together, hoping thatll fix it and doesnt ever address the actual problem that their mothers hate each other. (f&b goes more into this, but its mostly cut from the show… :/)

YES. i think its a lot of overthinking on viserys part, like worried that by saying this thing or that thing, hell upset rhaenyra. so he doesnt tell her anything, but THATS the thing that upsets her! you can even see in ep 2? when he talks to her about having to remarry, how grateful she is for him to just open up to her! she just wants to know whats going on dummy!

but then again, when theyre having dinner (in i think the same episode?) he tells her they should be able to be open with each other, say whatevers on their mind and rhaenyra responds by saying hes the king and can say whatever he likes, viserys looks almost… upset by that. and otto in ep3 telling him that rhaenyra will do as he commands, and viserys says he doesnt want to command her. i think the very idea of having an open and honest relationship with your children, especially as a father to daughter, is not.. all that common for that time? even more that hes not just rhaenyras father but also her King, complicates it more. (and this is maybe part of where the emotional incest comes from too?)

2. it definitely feels like viserys is threatened, or atleast intimidated by corlys? i have my own little headcanon that as kids viserys had a crush on rhaenys. he always assumed they would be the ones getting married, until she goes off and married corlys instead and that sorta started the animosity between them. corlys dislikes viserys as well, sees him as this soft, weak man unworthy of the crown AND his wifes usurper. theyre only barely tolerating each other for rhaenys sake. but that aside, i agree i think viserys saw the marriage offer to laena as a slight to him. like as a way to ‘fix’ the ‘mistake’ of the council of 101, saying more about viserys own lack of self esteem than anything else. laena was also like, 12 at that point right? i think seeing her all dressed up like that reminded him of aemma, who he married at 11, and he was hit with a wave of ‘oh gods i cant do this again’ so he ran and tripped and fell in the opposite direction.

2.5 IT WAS ABSOLUTELY FLIRTING YES. im so glad someone else sees the lyonel x viserys agenda. viserys calling lyonel in, alone, telling him to keep sitting. who do u think i should marry 🥺👉👈. he wanted lyonel to say himself… the way he kept pacing around, leaning on the table, over the chair. he was nervous infront of his crush!

3. ive been going through getting screenshots of hotd lately and it absolutely killed me how aemma and viserys were always holding hands, playing with each others fingers… i hadnt noticed it until you pointed it out but yeah… after she dies he doesnt really have that physical affection with anyone else. i think like, its maybe daemon? as the only other person we see him interact with like that? is that really the only time we see viserys and rhaenyra hug im gonna do something crazy….. but ALSO have to agree i dont think its a mistake! he was absolutely seeing the ghost of aemma there

The beginning of ep 25 made me so tense. Girl, just tell them before things escalate--too late.

Gotta hand it to Qingheng. He knows how to end things with a bang! (evil smile) I love this.

MY EMOTIONS! This is the beginning of the end of the soul shard arc and I'm conflicted. I love these 3 and my heart breaks when they learn the truth. But then Youqin is going to come back. Let's get through these tears, guys! (reaches for a tissue)

Chaofeng and Qingkui really should just run away and start a family away from the Void realm. They could have the happy ending they freaking need. I can see that happening! Let's make it reality. P.s. Bring Haichou

Every time that guy with a moustache shows up: Aren't you supposed to be dead? Was that explained earlier?

The two baby-faced Immortals show up and this their backup? No. The true backup is the soul shards! 3 men protecting their woman? That's romantic.

Once again Youqin is doing a selfless sacrifice: his soul shards give up themselves for her. This getting to be a very bad habit!

Youqin is coming back!!!!!!! My Immortal Turtle! He's got the same deadpan expression and he's still powerful. Phew!

Dingyun just died? I didn't expect that moment of sacrifice from someone like him.

I am legit, no lie, crying. Those 3 saying goodbye breaks my heart. Excuse me a moment while I sob in the corner.

Yay…Youqin has no emotions! The Immortal Realm will be rejoicing tonight. Bring out the wine.

Between you and me, the turtle DEFINITELY has his emotions and he's in love with her. Those eyes don't lie. And Yetan is in love with him no doubt.

I never liked the Immortal Emperor. It was his constant constipation face that irked me and that fact that he's willing to throw his son to the Guixu because "he's earned it".

I knew he remembered everything, and he knows Yetan's true identity. I'm just an emotional mess right now!

Admittedly I put off any attachment to Chaofeng and Qingkui because Youqin was coming back, but now that he is back, I can say: the Void couple are super cute. I wish them happiness no matter short it is.

Short complaint: Heavenly/Immortal clothes are boring as hell. It's just pastels and various shades of white. They do this all the time with fantasy dramas. (shakes head) Come on, let's do something different. But this clothes-changing-scene is adorable. Poor dragonfly guy, he can never win.

(gasps) The hugs! My heart is rollercoaster: first, the tears now the heart palpitations from the adorableness radiating off the Immortal couple! And he's Immortal Turtle, but out his shell. (I will keep this analogy up for as long as I darn well, please. And yes, I wish I could have thought of turtle references for Foxy and Greed, but I couldn't.)

It's going to be impossible for our lovebirds to keep their dates a secret. Youqin is doing a terrible job at keeping his emotions in check, now that he has them. And Yetan has literally never been doted on, so you know she loves this.

I totally see the 3 shards in the new Youqin. He's a mixture of all 3 and still has some traces of the old turtle. Again, Chen Xingxu does a phenomenal job playing so many different characters.

The Void Queen is going after Chaofeng and the Void gang. Haichou is trying to do the right thing by keeping all news from his friend, but Chaofeng is still the little schemer. I bet he'll sneak out and draw the army away from Qingkui or something like that.

Canon era, post-ep S5e13, Merlin managed to save Arthur's life and they return to Camelot. But after the big reveal and Arthur’s acceptance nothing between them can stay the same... This fic absolutely wrecked me and imho belongs to the very best merthur fics EVER.

Hi dear! First of all, feel free to call me LJ💗 and YESSSS of course I read I Love You by evokingmemories! It is indeed one of the best merthur fics out there. The author literally gave us everything we could have ever hoped for. You can always find me signing up for canon divergent fics of s5e13 where Merlin saves Arthur instead of the unalive trope that BBC shoved in our faces. And this one I remember had a very lovely touch on their emotions, especially Arthur's and his realisation of being in love with Merlin. Here are some of its iconic quotes that I bookmarked:

“You can touch me, Merlin. I’m not going to…”

He trails off, but they both know what he meant to say. Hurt you.

As if Arthur could ever do anything remotely close to truly hurting Merlin. As if he wouldn’t walk to the very ends of the earth to strike down anyone who’d dare to do so.

“Christ, Merlin. Sometimes I think you really do have a death wish.”

“Only when it comes to you, Arthur,” he says, so casually, and Arthur asks Merlin to move on with the story because he can’t ‒ won’t ‒ think of the implications of those words, teasing as they may be.

Arthur looks away. He always does, eventually.

Aaan we're back with ep 4. John heavy ep 4. This will be a lot,but I actually dont want to focus on John with it. I will reference to him because he's literally going through an episode long ptsd attack and there's a lot to discuss with that, but there are so many other interesting facets about this episode. We also get kyle here.

But sure let's discuss John 1st tho. So his response to dealing with his ptsd flashbacks is distracting it with violence. Now i do want to make something clear here. I dont think necessarily that chanelling his very complicated emotions into action is bad per se here, if this was productive tho. But with John, unlike several othera ih this episode like Mary and Carlos, he isn't productive about it. For Mary we see that she is chanelling her own complicated emotions into training and getting John to partake, but it only slightly works. Same with Carlos, they focus their own issues into their hunting. John however does not. He tries to let it out through hunting, but really qhat works is just punching something as seen in the bathroom. Its not about chanelling it into something, but just violence qhich is why his hands no longer shake after punching the dispenser even tho all that action is is destructive. He also is very much either unaware of or actively ignoring his limits, because he's given several outs before getting himself in the group session and severely triggered. Mary alone gives him at least 2 or 3 outs. But she, like everyone, assumes he can make his own choices and can handle himself so when he saya he's good, then they trust it. Which isnt an issue, they are right to trust him on his own limits. But he very much isnt listening to them.

Now lets talk Carlos a bit, because we have some fun stuff for him too. 1stly we find out he was navy medic. That alone tells me some stuff and also very much reminds me of Dean in Pac-Man Fever. But it also firmly speaks back.to what we've been seeing from Carlos the past 3 episodes. Ive been mentioning that theue role in ep 1-3 was more support, was thw one in the background, doing the job, efficiently, not in the foreground as a soldier, but nonetheless vital. The fact thay they were medic makes perfect sense in this context, because as medic the goal was to ensure the frontline fighters were able and ready to jump back in and thay was what Carlos has been doing the past few episode. Then we have the story during group therapy that slots into place the ways he's been supporting everyone. Because while John is deing with severe survivors guilt and an exacerbated sense of responsibility which imo is why its much easier for him to have a black and white view of the situation, Carlos could've had the same issue, especially as a medic where, unlike John's self imposed responsibility, ut was literally their job to keep people alive and certainly couldn't through their time serving, not everyone. And even then, Carlos' takeaway wasn't to demonize the other side who was responsible for the people Carlos was in charge of saving ending up under their care, but rather saw the enemy and understood clearly that they too likely got pulled into this war against their wishes for some, lost people and experience the horror.and loss that the war brought same as Carlos. That speaks to a high level of empathy, something we've already seen Carlos display the first 3 episode but it makes it even clearer here that its a trait they've had foe a long long time and its one thats been honed and tested.

Then we have Mary and Lata, both of whom are dealing with the loss of Maggie and what effects this had on them. So if for John and Carlos we have the magnitude of war combined with personal loss, for Mary and Lata we have the very personal loss of Maggie reflected through the magnitude of hunting life. Which is why I think the episode has Carols and John confrunting (for better or worse) their loss in a group setting while Mary and Lata are in a one on ine scenario either just by themselves or talking to a singular person (Kyle). And why their confruntation of the loss happens in a quieter way via going to Maggies room and acknowledging that loss properly and thus reconnecting with who Maggie was, to them, and remembering her and understanding her which in turn leads to them understaning themselves a bit.

A quick line about Millie here. I think "her words are cheap, actions speak louder" attitude isnt necessarily a problem per se, the issue is that that saying refers to words are cheap if your actions dont match them, not that you shouldn't talk about things. And thats where the issue lands, because Millies actions have actually been kinda counter to her words and not in a good way the last few episode because she's said things that were a problem and acted correctly and did things that were a problem and said the correct thing, but til now its very rarely been actions matching her words. This ep is actually where we start seeing the shift into a Millie that us more aligned in her meanings. Having her verbally be there for John and the physically as well at the end of the episode. It's not perfect, both her actions ans words are both flawed this episode in various moments, but they are aligned.

And finally Mars Neto and the fucking sheer amount of Michael parallels/references in this episode. It drives me insane! Its the mention of John's destiny, the fact that Neto uses a spear, thay he wants John to be his own personal human weapon, the fact that Mars Neto isnt even the God of War himself, but rather in Lata's words, based on the Roman God of War, this emulating Mars the way Michael tried to emulate Chuck while ruling Heaven. I just cannot ignore the Michael of it all. And I also cant ignore that the way he dies is heavily reminiscent of how Dean, under the Mark of Cain, another older brother who echoed Michael and who's outright referenced by Neto when speaking of the centuries of blood and violence in John"s blood, killed Abaddon. The violence of it is echoed here and the issue with that violence ia too. Because while killing Neto is a good thing, like killing Abaddon was, the ultimate take from the battle is that John did not do the right thing because of the rage, juat like killing Abaddon spoke of the Marks influence over Dean.

And finally, we have the conclusion, of Mary and Lata starting to heal from their loss in a trubute to Maggie herself, Carlos going to therapy and John, isolating himself with only Millie there to comfort him, but even that is moreso because Millie goes out to search foe him, and not because he seeks out help.

This is a very rough episode to watch for me, for a miryad of reasons, but thats also why it's onw of my favorites too.

Okay so I’m a literal bag of emotions rn and tumblr is my unfortunate sounding board, so ima get all this out in one and then ima shut up & go back to just reblogging others until I can control myself again😂 okay? okay. Buckle up.

I know Fire can be heartbreaking & unexpected but that ending was just evil and purely-for-shock value-cruel. Like I know killing off characters for advancement is nothing new here but the way they did that was just so mean to me - I am literally still shaking about it.

And PD?! I cannot believe they think that episode (no matter how incredible the acting) comes anywhere close to the ending / write off that Jesse deserves after dedicating himself for the last 9 - ALMOST 10 - WHOLE SEASONS to this show! And as for that giving justice to his character, show me WHERE?! Because all I saw was so many ooc choices, all to get out of a shitty situation that inevitably led to a complete decimation of years of character development / growth & him being written out in the most confusing af way, as an attempt to keep it even loosely linked to the jay we know and love.

I don’t even know how to feel rn.

I am fuming. Like so, indescribably angry.

But i’m also so proud - of Jesse - of his acting & his hard work & how he’s handled this whole shit show of a situation.

(EDIT - also incredibly proud of hanako’s acting in tonight’s fire ep! If I didn’t already love both Evan & hawkami in general, so much, her performance alone would’ve broken my heart tonight anyway, because my god that girl was good🙌)

And I’m obviously gutted. So completely & utterly devastated.

Honestly do not know if the shows will even sit right with me after this let alone be watchable.

okay so I know we’re all feeling that chief hawkins is basically the CF writers attempt at a temporary roadblock on the road to getting violet & gallo back together (aka a repeat of granger & sydney on the road to brettsey) , but I’ve come to the annoyingly unsurprising conclusion that im basically in love with him and ngl ima probably throw a fit if they use him suggesting distance from violet as a way to write him out😒😂😩

Is it just me, or does this particular chicago wednesday feel like an utter shit show and it’s not even over yet?!

Like i literally feel like I’m watching the entire one Chicago universe implode before my eyes and the writers expect us to be happy about it or at least just move past it & keep watching?!

From that unbearably cruel fire ending to seeing jay turn into the one thing he’s always hated & said he wouldn’t become right before they write him out - I literally cannot think straight besides the sheer heartbroken anger fuelling me rn.

My brain is freaking scrambled and I honestly cannot see how these decisions are gonna get them anything but a loss in fanbase?!

MAKE. IT. MAKE. SENSE.

mon, i’ve been wanting to text you since friday night, as soon as i finished ep9 but i’ve been so incredibly overcome with emotion, i just have not had the courage to process everything and put what i feel into words.

i have been bawling since the very start of the ep, mon. right from the night-&-day conflict-cause reveal, to the first time day realises he’s losing sight, to the intimate scene, to (of course) the final scene, i have literally been in tears, unable to process any of my feelings. hell, i couldn’t even watch the full ep from between my tears, but i’m too scared to go back and watch so soon. there are so many things i felt, so many thoughts i had that i wanted to share with you but i’m just so overwhelmed even as yet, and i just want you to know, that if ever my thoughts become a little bit more clear and my feelings a bit less overwhelming, you will definitely be the first to hear all i want to say (sorry to be a bother but you’re like one of the few people i can share the utter happiness that this show is for me and i really want to discuss ALL ABOUT IT with you, and get all your thoughts!! but i get so overwhelmed and am so random with being active on this app, ughh it’s so hard 😭😭😭😭😭)

i just wanted to share this one thought with you that i had while watching the ep though, because i know you’d appreciate it so damn much. this series feels like such a beautiful gift to all us fans from jimmysea and p’aof, mon. like the heart that has gone into this project and the sheer beauty that everyone involved has created feels like the best present one could ever ask for (🥹). truly, i have no words other than the fact that i have never, ever experienced anything like this ever before and i am truly so, so overcome with a myriad of emotions, half of which i can’t even name.

WELL FIRST OF ALL YOU’RE NEVER A BOTHER AND YOUR MESSAGES ALWAYS PUT A SMILE ON MY FACE AND MAKE ME INCREDIBLY HAPPY SO JOKES ON YOU SAM!!!!!!!!!!! YOU’RE ACTUALLY STUCK WITH ME NOW AND I WILL BE SITTING HERE PATIENTLY WAITING FOR YOUR THOUGHTS ON LAST TWILIGHT WHENEVER YOU’RE READY TO SHARE THEM

take all the time you need tho, i definitely understand feeling overwhelmed by this show and not being able to write down everything you want to say. and idk if im the only one experiencing this, but these past couple of months since last twilight started have been so surreal to me like. i haven’t even begun to process 13% of the things that happened in episode 9 or any past episode really and it’s already time for episode 10 tomorrow. we’ve waited for this show for a whole year and in two more weeks it’s already gonna be over and yet somehow im still stuck on the very first episode with so many things to say and so many emotions to deal with and so many thoughts i want to share with you all but it seems too late now except it’s not!!!!!! we’re still here talking about vice versa after almost two years, we’re gonna be here talking about last twilight long after it ends!!!!!!

and to me this does feel like a show that you need to let sink in and settle a little before you can fully appreciate it, not because it’s overly complicated or controversial, but because it strikes something so deep into your soul that you need to watch it multiple times to unravel all its beauty. the feelings you get when you experience something for the first time can’t ever be repeated, but there is new understanding to be found in all the times after it. like you said, even just by watching episode 9 you can tell that there’s so much love and so much care that went into this show, and then you watch the bts videos and you see how hard everyone worked to make this happen, how the entire crew climbed that quite literal mountain just to deliver something special to us

i think that’s why despite all of my fears and worries about the ending that i can’t quite shake off, im also trying really hard to have faith in everyone involved in the show, because it’s a product of love and i will always be so deeply grateful to them for gifting it to the world
