you knew this mission was coming but you were still sad to see bucky lacing up his boots and getting ready to go.
he helped you get ready for the night and started getting himself ready.
you were standing in the doorway, clutching your favorite stuffie, and watching him sadly.
bucky noticed you and walked over to you, kissing your forehead. "it's a short one this time dovie. only a week and then i'm home."
your eyes started stinging and you hugged bucky as hard as you could. "gonna miss you buggy." you cried. "b-be... be good n... n..." bucky pat your head as you sobbed into him.
it happened every time he had to go on a mission. he knew you were always scared for him but you usually held it together when he was leaving for shorter ones.
you two stood there for a few minutes, bucky reassuring you the whole time. your crying soon calmed down and reduced to sniffles. you pulled out of the hug and wiped your nose with your shirt.
bucky sat you on the bed and you kept watching him silently. he had forgotten something in the other room and an idea popped into your head.
you looked through the door to make sure he was gone and you scrambled of the bed, quickly opening his dufflebag, and shoved your stuffie down the side of it.
"protec' buggy." you whispered as you closed the bag.
you walked into the room bucky was in and gave him another hug. "'m tired. goin' t'bed," you yawned. "nini buggy."
bucky smiled at your sudden change of heart, thinking nothing of it, and returned the hug. "good night little dovie. i love you." he whispered.
"wuv you too."
he carried you to your room and tucked you, giving you one last forehead kiss before he left. "a week little dovie. i promise."
he grabbed his stuff and headed toward the avengers tower. he couldn't handle seeing you upset like that.
he barely paid attention to anything until he was on the jet.
he opened his bag to get his clothes for the mission and noticed your stuffie. he choked back tears as he took it out.
you protect him just as much as he protects you, just in a different way.

Hi friend! I was wondering if you had any favorite Israeli/Hebrew children's books! Also any fave Israeli musicians??
Hello, my lovely! :D How are you?
Ooooh, do I! Man, you're gonna regret asking me this. XD Sorry, not sorry... So shall we start with Israeli/Hebrew kids' books?
Anything by Yehuda Atlas (ื™ื”ื•ื“ื” ืื˜ืœืก), but especially And That Kid is Me (ื•ื”ื™ืœื“ ื”ื–ื” ื”ื•ื ืื ื™). Short humorous stories, written in rhymes, perfectly capturing how baffling the world can be for a kid, and how silly adults can seem, or just what things can sometimes feel like for a child. It's one of those books that work, funny and essential, 'coz it's so true. He just gets kids.
Tumblr media
Another one that I love, and am probably one of the few Israeli kids who even know this book, is Siamina and the Cats of Yemin Moshe (ืกื™ืืžื™ื ื” ื•ื”ื—ืชื•ืœื™ื ืฉืœ ื™ืžื™ืŸ ืžืฉื”) by Holocaust survivor Uri Orlev (ืื•ืจื™ ืื•ืจืœื‘. He's more well known for his books about that period of time, which are also highly recommended, but I only dared read them when I was older). Jerusalem is known for its many stray cats, and the book is a love fest for cats and Jerusalem, with some historical sites becoming in the book the "homes" of the cats.
Tumblr media
David Gershtein, who crafted the engravings for the book, is a pretty popular Israeli artist, and you can find some of his creations all over the country, and even entire shops dedicated to his works.
Tumblr media
Last one ('coz I don't wanna burden you too much, but lemme know if you want more recs!) that I really loved as a kid, was Yael's House (ื”ื‘ื™ืช ืฉืœ ื™ืขืœ) by Miriam Rot (ืžืจื™ื ืจื•ืช). It was about a girl who has a home, but she wants a house that would be all her own. She tries all sorts of solutions, including taking over the space under the kitchen table... Not gonna lie, as a kid I was inspired to follow in her footsteps, but my parents were not impressed.
Tumblr media
Now, as for Israeli musicians! You have stumbled onto dangerous ground, my friend, since I'm a music addict, and in love with the Hebrew language, so songs in Hebrew are something I can go on about for freaking years...
I'll share with you the link to two unlisted playlists that I made on YouTube. One is of some of my fave Israeli songs (though I started it years ago, so sadly, I see some vids have been deleted or made private, and there are literally hundreds of songs on the list, meaning I'm not sure which ones are missing), but also with a few thrown in 'coz I think they're good for people who wanna know Israeli culture and popular Israeli songs, and the other is one that I started making with songs connected in different ways to the current war we're in. They're not all faves, but I thought they capture a moment in time, so I wanted to have them grouped together. I'm actually not done with either list, the latter I really just started not that long ago, so you can expect them to grow.
If we're talking specific Israeli musicians, I find it hard to answer, I think almost every singer or songwriter has at least one good song to offer, and likewise whenever I wanna name one, I feel like adding, "Except for this song... and that one..." No musician is great all the time. But I guess some of my faves (where I like more songs than I don't) include Ivri Lider, Berry Sakharof, Yehuda Poliker, Ran Danker, Harel Ska'at, Chanan ben Ari, Narkis, Eliad, Amir Dadon, Avraham Tal, Marina Maximilian, Achinoam Nini (Noa), Sheila Ferber, Gilad Segev, Ofra Chaza, Meni Berger, Yardena Arazi, Natan Goshen, Keren Peles, Izhar Ashdot, Nurit Galron, and the bands Beit Ha'bubot, Ha'Yehudim, Metropolin, Ethnix, Mashina and Synergia.
I was thinking I should add at least one of these vids to my reply, and for whatever reason, the one that started playing itself in my head (where there is always music) was a song first released in 1993, ืื“ืžื” ื—ืžื” (Hot Earth) by Shlomo Gronich and the Shva Choir (Sheba is the English pronunciation of Shva). I love this song, I think the vid was very cool for its time, and I'm still never gonna forgive the MTV viewers who gave it last place in a video music awards. The song incorporates Hebrew and Amharic, both Semitic languages, the latter being the language spoken by Ethiopian Jews. You can actually listen to the whole special album (inspired by the story of the Ethiopian Jewish community's journey to Israel) here.
youtube
But just for the fun of throwing in a gay themed song as well, here's ื”ืชืฉืžืข ืงื•ืœื™ (Will You Hear My Voice), a love poem for a man, originally written by an Israeli poet called Rachel (full name: Rachel Bluwstein Sela), but it's performed here by only men, and no one changed the pronouns, which makes it a mlm song to me. It's so pretty and sad (Rachel is believed to have written the poem to a former lover, a man she even thought at one point she would marry, but WWI tears them apart and they never meet again. She wrote this poem, after getting the news that she's terminally ill), it fills my soul at the same time as it tugs on my heart.
youtube
I hope this helps! Sending so much love! xoxox

ngl seeing r*na do the "lets keep our relationship a secret" trope thing in the trailer is already making me go "ugh...seriously?" like it's the final season; portwell got scuffed last season unfairly and yet i'm supposed to believe r*na will be endgame and that's the trope they wanna do? (also it says a lot that gina doesnt feel comfortable enough in their relationship to just be normal about it and not hide it, especially since nini is gone and ej was...not in the trailer at all???? like h u h?)
what made portwell so appealing over r*na was how healthy the relationship seemed in s2 and the mutual respect for each other. there were no secrets, no 'hiding their relationship' (or in s2's case, a budding friendship), just two people who just cared about each other and it was healthy
granted this is just a trailer for the final season and everything is out of context, but that quote really just rubbed me the wrong way ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ
it's also kinda frustrating cuz i liked r*na in s1 and i still think they have really good chemistry so there is a part of me that's kinda rooting for them? in the sense of "if theyre gonna be endgame at least let it be decently written"
sigh, frankly i just miss portwell, we could've had it all

(jsyk, i'm keeping ash's pov! maybe we can write maddox's pov of this later on but can we keep ash's hehe)
silence reigns, neither of them speaking. their little camp wakes up, bit by bit, until they're all awake. nini shout-whispers that one of them should've waken someone up, but they'd shrugged in unison.
that's when the guard is finally left alone. the guy that's been staying with him for a while, a thin fuck with black hair, pats him on the shoulder, speaks to him, and leaves.
ashlyn hisses, "alright, he's gone."
"we discussed this, and you all remember the plan?" miss jenn tells them seriously, and they all nod. "alright, let's go!"
nini feeds the horses a few of their apples to keep them busy while they're gone, then mazzara claps ash on the back, jolting her, and away they go.
all eight of them rush across, and somehow the sound of their feet either doesn't register or doesn't alarm the guard (either way, he's stupid), but when he finally turns around, he shouts in alarm as eight people pretty much tackle him. well, mazzara's the one that actually tackles him, getting him on the floor and pressing some handcuffs over his wrists, and the rest stay for just to moment to make sure it's handled before rushing to the captives. ej immediately rushes to val's side, making sure she's okay before starting to cut at the ropes that bind her and ashlyn immediately drops down to her knees to see ricky.
he's not looking good, and the wound looks pretty bad, and he's definitely unconscious. ash instantly checks his pulse and sighs, her whole body filling with relief. gina immediately starts crying and tenderly brushing his hair out of his face while nini opens one of his eyes to see if they're dilated.
ash briefly looks to the side to see jenn, carlos (seb stands nearby) and, most importantly, maddox kneeling by jet's side. maddox holds her brother's face with so much tenderness.
"maddie?" ash can hear him whisper in a cracked voice.
"shh, it's me, jet." she sounds like she's close to crying, clearly keeping it together for her brother. "we're gonna get you safe, okay? we're gonna get youโ€”"
"TAKE COVER!" seb shouts and leaps over to carlos, jenn and maddox, a second before the sound of gunshots fill the air.
ash yelps and she hears her cousin yank a close set of boxes (marked 'for cali hunters', and ash feels sick seeing it) in front of them to sheidl them; the rest pull more boxes and miss jenn hides behind a wooden chair. val herself looks very out of it, gaze distant and pretty lashes fluttering as she clearly fights for consciousness.
"shit!" ej shouts, above the sound of the gunshots, shaking val a bit to keep her awake. she whines at the discomfort of being moved, clearly not knowing what's going on. "shit, val, are youโ€”"
gunshots from their side now, miss jenn and mr mazzara, shooting in sync as if born to fight together, and as ashlyn looks over, northern heights immediately disperse. even when lily screams for them to cover her, none of them do and instead hide behind houses to either, well, hide, or get a better vantage point. one runs away at the sight of mazzara, clearly having known him, and the black haired one sees miss jenn and blanches, dropping his gun and rushing to hide. jenn and mazzara go after those two, while nini shoots someone trying to escape in the leg. these are the people that are so fearsome? seems like in the face of their old enemies (jenn and mazzara), they have no real strength.
it takes ash a second to realize that lily's alone. no one to cover her. her people have abandoned her.
ash knows what maddox is going to do a second before she actually does. carlos shouts, "MADDOXโ€”!" but it's too late, maddox has already set off running. lily, seeing a very angry outlaw captain running full speed towards her, visibly pales and veers off behind a building and just a moment later, maddox disappears behind it too.
ash gets up, but ej grabs her wrist. "ricky." he whispers, choked, and ash looks over and sees ricky's on the ground now, and there's a small blood pool around him and gina's sobbingโ€”
ash swears, glancing at where maddox had vanished before running to ricky's side.
he got grazed during the fight, a tiny thing that had clearly just clipped his lower leg, but he's losing blood. gina's trying to sit him straight.
"let me." she whispers, and gina hesitates for only a moment before relinquishing her attempts. ash rips off part of her shirt (for the second time recently), and wraps it around his injured foot, and good news! it doesn't immediately soak through. ash lets out a deep breath and puts a hand on gina's shoulder. "he'll be alright." she tells her gently.
gina just nods, a second before there's the worst sound ashlyn has ever heard in her life, and one she never wants to hear again.
maddox screams.
(is this alright. bc i can always add more. sorry FHJRHFJHFH sorry <//3)
okay so iโ€™m slightly ill (my head hurts like a bitch) as i type this but i still wanna give u something king JEJDJD <3:
the scream could play a key role in ashlyn's nightmares. it was horrifying. she'd never thought she'd even hear such a scream- especially from maddox. hell, she'd only been this close with maddox in the last few days, but she felt as though she'd learnt more in those few days than she had in the rest of her life so far.
she runs to the sound of the screams, leaving the others in the dust. maddox. maddox.
she didn't know what she had expected to see but fuck, it wasn't this. lily, with maddox against the wall and a hand buried into the same wound that she had stitched up only days ago. lily's hand, now bloody as the consequences of her own actions.
ashlyn doesn't need to think about this situation. no one with more than five braincells, did.
"step away, now." she held the gun in her hands and aimed it directly at lily's face. for a second, it seemed as though lily would do just that. to be in such a position, one wrong move and ash could blow her brains out, after all.
but lily's face that was once shocked, now is one that is smirking. her hand digs further into maddox and she yells again in more pain than ever before. ash holds the gun even closer to lily temple as a warning when seeing maddox's suffering continue. she never should've let her run off on her own, fuck.
"i mean it, lily." ash warns her, the safety of her gun clicking off as each second passed. "step. away." the smile that was printed across lily's face could tell a thousand words to ashlyn, yet she still wouldn't know what it meant.
as she began to move away, her fingers left the wound by maddox's side, bloodstained. maddie can't help but hiss out in agony as it all unfolds, her hand attempting to grab her side, but falling in the process.
as ash goes to move and pick up maddox, lily moves just as quickly at the same time, taking the gun out of her own holester and pointing it. ashlyn goes to hold maddox but stops once again when she sees where lily points said gun. directly at maddie.
โ€œyour turn, sheriff.โ€ god she hated it. being the sheriff. being called sheriff. it was meant to be something great, but it was only ever half great when maddox called her it. โ€œback off, i got places to be, and your girlfriend here is my ticket out-โ€
โ€œsheโ€™s not my girlfriend-โ€ a barely conscious maddox says under her breath. she can hardly stand, and ash couldnโ€™t even move to help her otherwise lily could pull the trigger. fuck. shit.
โ€œright.โ€ lily doesnโ€™t believe it one bit. โ€œis that why she came running to your aid quicker than a fucking horse?โ€ lilyโ€™s glances angrily between the two of them, โ€œno. you may not see it now but-โ€ a laugh escapes lily at such a terrible time as she then reaches over to grab maddox. ashlyn wants to move and stop her. take her out of lilyโ€™s hands immediately. to re stitch her wound and take her back to the village, where she could just nurse her back to health in better conditions.
she couldnโ€™t let lily get away with it. she wouldnโ€™t.

01:16 - Intro
Ben
And we're back! Following up on our I Told Sunset About You retrospective we are going to move towards I Promised You the Moon. We brought a different collection of panelists this time, but before we get into NiNiโ€™s session with the panelists, NiNi wanted to first discuss Last Twilight in Phuket with just the two of us. NiNi, describe what Last Twilight in Phuket is for the people who may have missed it because they only watched on Viki.
NiNi
I'm not going to describe it, because I'm just going to tell you: hit pause, go to Youtube, find it and watch it.
Ben
I'll describe it for you!
NiNi
Let me describe it, I never get to describe anything anymore, so I'm going to try.ย
Ben
I'm proud of you, go for it.
NiNi
So! Last Twilight in Phuket is aโ€ฆ transition piece, if you will, between I Told Sunset About You and I Promised You the Moon, that covers Oh-aewโ€™s final day in Phuket. So they spend the whole day together, they wake up together, they go around town together. They discover that everything around them is changing, in a very very melancholy way that honestly made me want toโ€ฆ pull my hair out, scream, and cry all at the same time. And they recommit to each other, and then they literally ride off into the moonlight, on their way, essentially, to Bangkok. I feel like that covers it? I didn't do as well as Ben, but I think I covered everything.
Ben
Last Twilight in Phuket is that summer after graduation before you go to college. It is the best summer of your life. It is a Bryan Adams song.
[both laugh]
Ben
Last Twilight in Phuket is really fascinating as a choice overall. It's available on Youtube still, it's beautiful. You get this 16-minute, almost short-film-esque piece, that is this huge release of some of the tension from ITSAY. Before you're heading into I Promised You the Moon. Like I knew I Promised You the Moon was gonna be a dramatic mess, because Last Twilight in Phuket is tinged with this whole โ€˜you can't go backโ€™ feeling about it.ย
One of my favorite scenes is when they attempt to go to the beach together, and it's not the same, because it's a bunch of people there. You get this feeling that they both wanted everything to be perfect between them, and it just cannot be, and it never will be. And I just really love, as you called it, the melancholy hanging over that really beautiful experience. Because it's them saying goodbye to their hometown and everything that it means to them. They know this is the end of an era for themselves, and there's thisโ€ฆ trepidation about what's coming next that I eat up every time.
NiNi
As somebody who has left my home for an unknown space, an unknown place, at least twice in my life [laughs] โ€ฆ there is that feeling of trepidation. There is that feeling that when you return, nothing's gonna be the same. It's all gonna be different. Having that actually brought to the fore in the way that everything is already different for them, in terms of the places that they're accustomed to being? Their tutoring school is closed down. The private beach that they went to is closed. Things that they had come to rely onโ€”places and spaces in particular that they had come to rely on as their placesโ€”were just gone. And what it sets up is that they have to now find new places and spaces, not just because they're moving to another city, but even in their hometown. Their hometown's never gonna be what it was and they are never gonna be the same boys who ran around Phuket crying at each otherโ€ฆ ever again. It's all going to be different. Everything's going to change. And that is sort of the essence of Last Twilight in Phuket. It's setting you up, it's preparing you for what's about to come. And it's also just saying goodbye to the things that have gone. It's saying goodbye even to the present moment. So even as things are happening, they're slipping away.ย
My favorite scene in Last Twilight in Phuket is the scene where their beach is closed, and they have to go to another beach that's more of a tourist beach, and they're surrounded by people when they're accustomed to being alone in this kind of way. And you wonder like, if Teh is gonna be more reserved because now they're in public. But they're also, like Ben brought up in the last episode, they're also in a tourist space. So they're surrounded by people, yes, but they're surrounded by people who don't know them and who they don't know. So they're free in a way, they're open, and what that allows them to do, they can just be themselves with each other. Teh holds his hand. He puts his arm around him. He hugs him so tightly on that beach when Oh starts crying. It's such a beautiful scene, and it's just so vivid in my mind because of what it represents. They are, like I said, surrounded by people, but the way that the scene is shot, it's like they're the only two people in the world.ย
That little short is so beautiful, and it's a perrrrfect, perfect, perfect way to close off the I Told Sunset About You story, and open up the I Promised You the Moon story.
Ben
I agree! You should watch it. It's good, and it's also free and it's available. There's no reason for you not to watch it.
08:00 Panel Introduction
NiNi
So our panel of I Promised You The Moon experts: our lovely transcription team, Ginny and Shan, hopped on this one as well as, once again, friend of the pod Mor: @liyazaki. And we were also joined by two new guests. Bookworm, @neurotic-bookworm on Tumblr, and Susan, @emotionally-charged-towel on Tumblr. And I think that we had a fabulous conversation. I can't wait for you to hear it, so let's dive right in.
08:45 - How did you come to BL and ITSAY/IPTYM?
NiNi
Welcome, welcome, panel of experts! Yes, these are the I Promised You The Moon experts. Let's start with ah, an easy, like a softball question: how did you come to BL, and how did you come to this I Told Sunset About You/I Promised You The Moon story? Shan, let's start with you.ย
Shan
I think I have a very unusual path to BL, I kind of came in via kdrama? Where Your Eyes Linger was my first one that I found when I was just perusing the next kdrama I wanted to watch, and then I realized that there was an entire genre of BL after I saw that, and fell quickly down a rabbit hole. Discovered Thai BL, first Thai BL was 2getherโ€”because that was very popular [laughs] at the time that I was looking around, which was in 2021?โ€”and quickly watched a whole ton of GMMTV shows before I Told Sunset About You came on my radar. And I was kind of blown away by ITSAY, it just felt so different from everything else I had seen of the genre. It felt, in a lot of ways to me as a Westerner, more familiarโ€”it was kind of a classic coming of age story, a classic kind of queer awakening story that I had seen before in Western media in some ways, although very specific I think to a Thai queer experience in a way that was very new for me.
NiNi
Bookworm you're up next on my list. How did you come to I Told Sunset About You and I Promised You The Moon?
Bookworm
My first BL was Kinnporsche, which I watched in May of this year, and I then joined Tumblr just to meet some, I don't know, like-minded people I suppose? And I made some friends and then, all of you immediately told me that I had to watch I Told Sunset About You. You had rules about how I had to watch it [laughs] and so I did I Told Sunset About You with Aiden, and I watched I Promised You The Moon with Shan. This is very different from what I've watched so far: I've only watched around twenty shows approximately, but this feels more like, as Shan mentioned, more of a coming of age. It's also veryโ€”much more Asian than the other shows that I watched so far. It immerses itself into the culture, the characters have specific traits that are more Asian. Yeah, it was a very fun watch experience.ย
NiNi
Bookworm youโ€™re like me, we keep the numbers low but we go for the quality ones. Susan how about you?
Susan
It's funny because Shan was saying that it seems like an unusual path to go into BLs through kdrama, but that's what happened with me too. The first BL I ever watched was To My Starโ€”I just kind of saw it as another kdrama. I didn't really pay very close attention to it, and it's not a show that really rewards, like, half-attention. So it didn't really take hold until a bit later, and actually the first BL that got me really like watching a lot of BLs is Senpai, This Canโ€™t Be Love.ย  I watched that one because it had two actors in it that were on Kamen Rider and my family are really into tokusatsu. That was kind of my path into the genre in general, and then of course you can't read about this stuff, especially in communities like the Tumblr fan community without hearing about I Told Sunset About You. There are some titles that sound more odd in English, without a cultural context for the countries they come from? And those would kind of stick in my mind a little bit more. And then of course you know I just heard glowing things. My big focus for a long time was, and kind of still is, Japanese BL. That's one of the reasons I hadn't watched it until just recently.
NiNi
Ben's gonna love that, you know Ben is a big big fan of the Japanese BLs. Ginny, let's go to you: how did you end up here on our esteemed panel?
Ginny
I guess this is the Asian drama background group, because I came in through cdramas; I was deep in the Untamed fandom from 2020 on, and got into reading translations of Chinese danmei, BL novels, and the few other adaptations that were available. Because I was studying Mandarin, I resisted getting into other Asian countriesโ€™ dramas for a long time, because I was like โ€˜this is language practice.โ€™ But I saw gifs from Manner of Death, and I was like, โ€˜wait! wait! They let the boys kiss?โ€™ Soโ€ฆ then I had to get into BL. I actually held off on ITSAY for a long time, because I'd been hearing that it was good, and I was like, I know a lot of these are are okay and enjoyable but not like, โ€œquality,โ€ and I want to not blow through all the good ones right away. So I started saving it. And then more came out, and more good shows came out, and I realized, oh there's actually a rich field of quality dramas here. And then I just was like, emotionally afraid, because people kept talking about what an intense experience it was? So I didn't finally watch it until earlier this year, and it was everything that had been told to me. Frequently when I go in expecting something to be intense, it's disappointing, or you know, it falls short of that? This series did not.
14:35 - Expectations of IPYTM
NiNi
That it certainly did not. Mor, I know you would have talked a little bit about the way that you came to BL on the ITSAY panel. So I want to kick off the next part of this with you. So weโ€™re coming off of ITSAY in the halcyon days of whenever we actually watched it, and we get to the end and boom: the story will continue. When you saw that, Mor, what was your expectation of what we were gonna get in this continuation of the story that ended up being I Promised You The Moon? What did you expect going into this?
Mor
So, when I am deeply attached to a story the way I was and will always be with ITSAY, I try to go into follow-ups to those stories with as close to zero expectations as possible. It's a defense mechanism, I'm just very afraid of being burned and disappointed, so I try to not let myself go down those mental rabbit holes of what could happen, because getting stressed out and theorizingโ€”it's not going to change the outcome, we're going to get what we're going to get. You hope that the writers will listen to the fans, you hope that they stay true to what we at least perceive to be the spirit and intention of the original story, but ultimately it is their story to tell, So I try to just get on board, strap myself in, enjoy the ride whatever it's going to be.ย
But my general expectation was that we would see some very relatable situations play out, so, living on your own for the first time, being totally responsible for yourself, finding new friends, having very new experiencesโ€”especially for Teh and Oh, given where they grew up. Bangkok is such a different environment than Phuket. And all the while they're trying to maintain friendships, they're trying to maintain their relationship. That age is just so exciting and terrifying and constantly in flux, and I expected I Promised You The Moon to showcase that. And it absolutely delivered: just, in a much more gut-wrenching way than I ever maybe originally anticipated, but one that nonetheless still rang incredibly true to life at least for me, and to these characters, which at the end of the day is all I can really ask for as a viewer.
NiNi
Guts were wrenched and no mistake. Bookworm, you're a recent convert to the legend of IPYTM as I like to call it. What did you expect having finished ITSAY, and getting ready to dive into IPYTM? What were your expectations of the story?
Bookworm
When we got to the end of ITSAY, one thing that was very clear for me was that Teh and Oh were seemingly on the same page? They finally were talking to each other and listening to each other, but only on the burning desire that they share for each other, right? Everything else that encapsulated a relationship, they had to figure all of that out, and that was my expectation. Immediately after I ended ITSAY, that was what popped into my head. And I wanted IPYTM to explore those, um, aspects of their relationship, how they were going to figure out living together, how toโ€ฆ spend time with each other, balance the schedules, and all of the other boring things that come with a relationship. And I think yeah, they were pretty successful, I would say.
NiNi
Shan, I'm gonna come to you next. What were you thinking of, having ended ITSAY, seeing that title card come up and then going into IPYTM? What were you thinking that we might get?
Shan
I came in with a lot of stuff already in my head about IPYTM, because as I tend to do, I had been lurking about on Tumblrโ€”that's how I learned about this show in the first place, I probably never would have found this show without seeing people talk about it on Tumblrโ€”so for both ITSAY and IPYTM, like, I kind of went in with like a notion of what the discourse was around them? So, similar to Bookworm, I felt that the next phase of the story would have to be them figuring out how to actually be in a relationship together which, frankly is one of my very favorite reasons for a season two to exist [laughs] of romances? We so rarely get that part of a romance story.ย
But I also knew that there was a lot of fandom discontent around this second part of the story. I knew going in that there was a cheating plotline and that people were big mad about it. And I had seen the commentary from some people that Teh had been quote-unquote โ€œruinedโ€ in the second part of the story, and that he was quote-unquote โ€œout of character.โ€ And having seen ITSAY and the quality of that production, and the quality of the writingโ€”like some of the best writing I've seen anywhere in the genre? I just didn't believe that was true, at all! [laughs] So I kind of went in, honestly, ready to fight, and just kind of like prove to myself that those takes were wrong? I went in with a fighting spirit, like, โ€˜I don't believe that that's true, and I bet this story is so much better than they think, and that fandom just wasn't ready for it.โ€™ So that's kind of honestly the posture that I took into the show. And you know, spoiler alert: they were wrong and Iโ€”and we here on this panelโ€”were right.
NiNi
[laughs] Shan came in ready to box. What about you Ginny, how did you feel going into I Promised You The Moon? What were your thoughts and expectations?
Ginny
Very similar to Shan, I had kind of picked up a lot about it by osmosis. I was sure that there was going to be a breakup, I had picked up that there might be cheating, and I knew that a lot of people hated Teh. I left ITSAY loving Teh so much, and also seeing very clearly why people might hate him, the things about him that a lot of people would pick up and be really upset about. So, I think I went in with my expectationsโ€ฆ pretty well set for all of that, andโ€ฆ I was just excited to see how the story was going to play out. I also had a lot of trust in the writing and creative talent behind the show, so I was ready to be satisfied by the story, and I was!
NiNi
Coming to you Susan, let's hear it?ย
Susan
Well, I haven't seen I Promised You The Moon. I don't mind spoilers, I actually kind of like to be spoiled on almost everything as much as possible. As much as I seek out media that has really a lot of emotional themes, I also can't handle them very well. So knowing what I'm in for really helps me. And it doesn't seem to detract from the experience for me.ย
ITSAY seems so self-contained, and so much about a certain moment in time? And it's so tied to the place. It makes it really hard to even picture what it would look like to tell this story, at a different phase of life, in another place. Everybody's a little bit fearful of second seasons and continuations of beloved shows, but if I'm really sold on the initial show, when I hear there's going to be more? Yeah, I'm nervous, but I'm just like yeah, yeah, more okay, sure, great! Yeah, whatever you say just give me more! This is one of the only times that I did kind of feel like hanging back for a moment and being like, โ€˜how would that work? I don't even know.โ€™ At the same time, I do usually prefer stories about established couples. It just gets at a kind of complexity that is really appealing. As exciting as getting together stories are, the established relationship story is usually kind of where the rubber meets the road. And I like when things get challenging and complicated and people definitely aren't being their best selves anymore, things like that.
NiNi
Definitely there was a lot of that in IPYTM.ย
22:40 - Narrative structure
NiNi
So, I'm gonna just switch things around a little bit, I want to talk about how IPYTM is structured, the narrative structure, the story coming out of the very clear five-act structure coming of age story that we got in ITSAY. And I want to really lean on Shan and Bookworm for this. Starting with Bookworm: what are your thoughts on how I Promised You The Moon is structured and organized as a story?
Bookworm
Well when I went into the watch, I was already told that there were going to be a lot of time skips in the show compared to ITSAY. ITSAY was much more fluid and flowing, and it was contained within, I think, just months. But when it came to IPYTM, we had a lot of blocks of time that were left for us to fill. I expected the characters to have breaksโ€”like how the characters would have developed during the times that we have lost, and there would be fractures in the character that we would see? I expected that to happen because that usually does happen when we have a lot of time skips. But it was impressively well-maintained through the time skips, and it did not bother me as much as I expected that it would? Maybe because I was informed beforehand that, this is how, narratively, the structure of the two shows were different.ย
Also we see the boys grow up a lot more in the show, right? So there was a sense of, sped-up nature in the show that we did not get in ITSAY as well? I have noticed a sense of discomfort around this narrative structure, but I felt pretty okay with it, maybe it's just a personal preference or maybe it was because I had prior knowledge, but it felt fine to me.
NiNi
Shan, you want to pick up on that?
Shan
I think that the way that we jump through time so much in IPYTM is like the biggest obvious difference, right? So ITSAY was structured kind of like a five-act story, where each episode was a complete act; big shift happens in the relationship in each episode. But IPYTM is different. It's kind of, I think, a three-act story split across five episodes. So you've got episodes 1 and 2 is Act 1, where it's the move to Bangkok, it's the new setting, it's the adjustment, to kind of moving into an adult phase of their relationship? And then into the first fracture in their relationship, related to some of the adult choices that they're having to make. That's kind of Act 1. And then there's a big time skip between episode 2 and episode 3. And episodes 3 and 4 are like Act 2. There's a pretty short time period that both of those episodes span across? Like, maybe only a few weeks of time. And that's of course the BIG big fracture in the relationship, when Teh begins to really drift away from Oh-aew, and ends up kissing Jai, and all of the fallout of that that we saw play out. And then there's another big time skip after the end of episode 4, and we'reโ€”head into episode 5, which is their kind of time apart and then their reconciliation. So it really kind of feels like three acts, kind of spread unevenly across five episodes. And each of those installments is paced differently. So I can see howโ€”and you know I think I felt some of this myself as a viewerโ€”it feels a little bit, I think hard to kind of keep your bearings in the story? Whereas in ITSAY you were on one continuous fluid ride, like Bookworm said.ย
IPYTM also has to fall back on some filmmaking tricks that ITSAY really didn't use, I think because of this structure. Things like using a lot more flashbacks, using repeating scenesโ€ฆ ITSAY really didn't do that at all, but it happens quite a bit in IPYTM: kind of trying to remind the audience and ground them in things that have happened, because they're skipping through time so much.ย
One of the things, that I think is maybe an intentional result of that different structure, is about the emotional tone of the two stories. ITSAYโ€”itโ€™s very emotionally immersive. Like I think on the panel discussion you all had about ITSAY, you talked about how these boys are constantly crying. The emotions are big, right? And that feels very in line with one continuous emotional story, a coming of age story about young boys who are kind of coming into themselves and understanding themselves for the first time. IPYTM, by contrast, feels a little bit more even-keeled. Like, there are emotions, but they're not quite as big. There's a little bit of a remove, and I think that's because they're adults now. Think about the way Teh cries in ITSAY, versus how he cries in IPYTM. In ITSAY he's like honking crying right? He's got like snot dripping down his face, losing his shit, curling into a ball. He has no control at all. In IPYTM when he cries, it's not like that. He does have to kind of keep a lid on it a little bit. He doesn't go quite as deep into his emotions. And so, I think the way that the narrative structure is set up kind of lends itself to that more adult feeling? Of having to restrain your emotions a little bit, and keep getting on with things, and not being able to just kind of wallow in the way that they could when they were young.ย
I don't think that one of these styles is better than the other? I think they are just different. And I think that as a viewer, we're probably all going to have a preference there. My preference personallyโ€”I like big emotion, you know? And one of the things that Bookworm and I talked about around this, was how there's a little bit of a Western/Eastern dichotomy here as well. I'm a Westerner, I like the bigness of the emotion in ITSAY, that really resonates for me. Whereas for Bookworm, the kind of, more emotional restraint that we see in IPYTM? Resonated a little more for her, and I don't know if you wanted to comment on that at all Bookworm.
Bookworm
Yeah, the bigness of emotions in ITSAY was definitely a factor that disengaged me from the emotion? For me, whenever a character on the screen does not want to feel something, and wants to keep it inside themselves and struggling to do so, and you can see it on the face, the struggle to keep their composure? While having all of this emotional turmoil within themselves? That is what will make me feel all of the emotions that they are trying to feel. I didn't really get that sort of immersion when I watched ITSAY, because Teh and Oh did all of the crying themselves. They cried constantly: they cried in classrooms, they cried [laughs] around their friends, there's just a lot of crying.ย
When it came to IPYTM, the emotions were much more subdued. In both of the big moments in Oh and Teh's relationship, when it came to a headโ€”in episode 4 when they fought, and afterwards Teh goes to Q's house to talk to Ohโ€”in both of those moments, both of them were angry, they were confused, and Teh's having the moment of realization of how he has fucked this up, and all of those emotions were dialed way back down. And I definitely felt much more immersed into the story, when it came to IPYTM than I felt in ITSAY.
NiNi
It's really interesting that that's the stuff that you guys picked up on because, in watching the documentariesโ€”and I don't know how many of you have watched the IPYTM documentaries as yetโ€”but one of the things that the director, Meen Tossaphon Riantong, talks about, particularly in that scene in episode 4 that you mentioned Bookworm, is about how when they were doing it they had to do multiple takes because Billkin was crying too much. He was being too emotional, and he needed him to dial it back because he's a grownup now. It was definitely deliberate on the part of the director.
31:36 - Teh and Ohโ€™s characters
NiNi
While we're on the topic of how Oh and Teh are handling emotion, let's delve a little bit into their characteristics, and how that even led them to be where they are, in the rift that they have in IPYTM. I want to start with Mor here: I want to talk a little bit about the different ways that Teh and Oh handle conflict, and the different ways that theyโ€ฆ deal with their relationship and how that led them to be in such a pickle [laughs] during I Promised You The Moon.
Mor
That's a very generous way of putting what happened. [laughs] It was definitely a pickle.ย
They approach conflict I think in polar opposite ways. Oh wants to talk things through, typically. He's more measured in his approach; you can tell even in ITSAY when they're still in high school that he will kind of wait and absorb and observe. But he wants to be open, he wants to talk things through, and he's very self-aware, whereas Teh doesn't know what he's doing or what's going on. Some of y'all have heard me use this analogy 1200 times already and I'm sorry, but for me, it always comes down to Teh being the equivalent of a human bulldozer. That man, he feels and he acts first, second, and thirdโ€”and then he maybe thinks fourth or fifth on a good day? [laughs] And I think part of that is just his personality. He's extremely passionate, he has been since he was a kid, and that passion is one of the things that drew Oh to him in the first place. I also think that Oh was basically Tehโ€™s touchstone in many ways from the time that they were kids? So when that relationship was severed, we never got evidence of any other connection that ever came close to that level for Teh. So I think in a way, Teh's emotional intelligence got stunted a little bit when that friendship stopped? And you can really see the difference, the contrast with Oh when they meet up again later in ITSAY.ย
Oh seems to make friends easily, he's well-liked, he's already incredibly self-aware and comfortable with who he is. When he gets into university one of the first things Oh does is seek out community. He values relationships. Like I said before he's more measured in his approach to life and to friendships, and because of that he has this emotional maturity and awareness going in to IPYTM that's light years beyond Teh? Teh just doesn't know how to put what he's feeling into words, and beyond that, Teh doesn't even seem to be aware of how he's really feeling in make or break moments that really count. It takes him much longer to process it and be able to communicate that. To top it off, Teh's tunnel vision is so focused on becoming an actor, and the friendships he makes are either accidental or they're initiated by other people, and he seems to minimally invest in them? Except for once Jai had him under his spell of course.ย
Teh also wants things to stay exactly the same, we see that a ton in I Promised You The Moon. Teh just does not cope well with change. It's like he wants to willfully ignore that it's an unavoidable part of life. When their friendship ended initially Teh lost the main person in his life who in my opinion challenged him, which Oh did just by nature of being himself. Oh doesn't have Tehโ€™s one-track mind determination, which of course brings its own set of issues and insecurities for Oh, but it also opens him up to seeing more possibilities, something that Teh has a hard time even conceptualizing. And I think because of this Teh got even more one-track minded once he started drifting away from Oh in IPYTM? Tehโ€™s basically rigid in a time where it is crucial to be flexible. He's blind to the fact that not everyone operates in the same way he does, especially his partner.ย
So basically you have these two people coming into this relationship with incredibly different ways of approaching life. One partner with subpar communication skillsโ€”and I'm being generous with that. [laughs] And they're in a new environment with new routines, new people, new challenges. These are differences that may have never become an issue in a friendship, but a romantic relationship? You can have the best intentions in the world, but when you have that much fundamental imbalance in an intimate relationship, that's a powder keg ready to explode. It leaves the perfect window of opportunity for snakes like Jai to take advantage of that at the first chance that they get.
NiNi
Yes, join me in the โ€œJai is a snakeโ€ corner over here. [laughs] I want to come to you Susan actually, because having not watched I Promised You The Moon, and just listening to everybody else talk about how Teh and Oh have progressed within I Promised You The Moon and the way that their relationship comes apartโ€”but having watched ITSAY, does it surprise you how things went with Teh and Oh coming out of ITSAY?
Susan
Ah, no, not at all, it actually seems really in keeping with the characters, and their kind of styles in how they relate to each other and, how they negotiated their relationship in ITSAY. I think it's really consistent.
NiNi
You heard it here first from our resident behavioral expert, people: Teh is not out of character.
Susan
People get into kind of complementary roles in relationships. It can be kind of one person's job to do certain things and voice certain types of needs, and another person's job to do the things that that role isn't taking care of, and voicing the needs that that person is afraid to voice, while maybe not voicing some needs that the other person is voicing. Big example of that is pursuing and distancing. A lot of relationships have some kind of imbalance between who's pursuing and who's distancing. The thing that I think kind of sums up pursuers and distancers is that it's about what you do when you're in distress. When a pursuer is in distress they're looking for connection, and distancers, when they're stressed, they want to get away. Again and again we see Teh just disappearing, when he's distressed, and kind of making it everybody else's job to track him down.
NiNi
You're taking us to church here. [laughs]ย
37:57 Presence or Absence of Queer Community
NiNi
I want to come to Ginny. One aspect of the character stuff that came up during Mor's contribution, and it's come up with Susan as well: this idea of Teh being more of aโ€ฆ lone wolf kind of character, whereas Oh always finds community, and when he moves to Bangkok he finds queer community where Teh does not. I have always felt like part of the way that things went between them was because Teh had no community to talk to about the things that he was experiencing and feeling?
Ginny
I'm having so many thoughts in response to what Susan said, and in response to your question. They both do seek connection, but Oh-aew is much much more interested in community, in friendships, in sharing himself in a fluid kind of balanced way. Teh has this intense drive for a one-to-one, deeply intimate, deeply entwined connection. He's not interested in friendships especially: he wants people to, like, bind their lives with his, he wants people to, like, twist their identity into his.ย
I want to go back to a couple of the things Susan was saying about the pursuer distancer dynamic first, which is that we do see Teh work very hard for the relationship in practical ways. Like he's the one keeping late hours and driving all over town to make sure he can spend the night with Oh, and he never once complains about that or resists that, because he is devoted to Oh in this way. But he has a very rigid conception of what that looks like, and as soon as the idea that they're not on this same career path, on the same path of artistic passion together? As soon as that's shattered, his idea of this unified partner that will walk aside him and share everything important in his life starts to crack, and he starts to look away from Oh-aew, and eventually to look to someone else for that kind of connection and bond that he feels like he needs. And for Teh at this point, his understanding of his sexuality has become kind of a non-issue, whereas his binding of his romantic interest and his artistic passion is where all of his turmoil lives.ย
Meanwhile Oh-aew has made this wonderful friend group. I recently rewatched the series, and their first interaction where he first meets Q and the other friendsโ€ฆ the first time I watched it I was so tense because Oh's loneliness and his homesickness is palpable and painful at that point in the story, and you just desperately want him to have somebody. And he sits down with this crowd of kids and you're not sure what's going to happen. It's not obvious right away that they're queer unless you're paying close attention, like, Qโ€™s fingernails are painted, there's little cues there, other things like that. And then within two seconds of meeting them, Oh-aew starts crying because he's so homesick, and I was like โ€˜oh god, what's going to happen, I'm so stressed for him.โ€™ But these boys just like surround him, they're so sweet to him, and then it becomes clear. Right there you've established, this is a queer friend group and every time you see them together there's just all these indicators that like, these are people that Oh can be at home with, can come into more of himself with, can be supported by. The way they hold him through the breakup makes me cry. Because it doesn't take away any of his pain, but they're so there for him. He's never alone and he's never unsupported. It makes a tremendous difference to how I think things go at the end. I don't think Oh gets to a place where he's able to come back to Teh at the end, if he doesn't have that community support holding him really through his whole college career and especially through the breakup.
42:33 Relationship Conflicts
NiNi
I want us to delve into some of these different things that Ohโ€™s friends are supporting him through, that Teh doesn't seem to have the same level of community on. Their initial conflicts, the early stuff that was happening, the things that are happening with them in year one and particularly the giant fight that they had in episode 2. I'm going to come to Shan for this.ย
I love talking about how horrible Teh is in episode 2 of I Promised You The Moon, because that boy was being rancid. But I also want to talk a little bit about how the seeds of that were sown in the little cracks that you saw in episode 1.
Shan
Thank you for allowing me to talk about Teh being rancid in episode 2. That fight is brutal! It starts with Teh being so passive aggressively awful to Oh-aew in front of other people. Oh-aew has come into this restaurant to sit with Teh and his seniorsโ€”these are people that Oh-aew is not particularly comfortable around? This is not a friendly crowd for Oh-aew. He is with people that he doesn't know well, that are older than him, that he wants to make a good impression on, because they are important to Teh and and he's Teh's partner. So for Teh to start taking digs on him under those circumstances, and to just not let up and keep relentlessly going no matter how many times everyone at the table tries to deflect him away from it? Just so brutal to watch.ย
And the seeds were planted pretty early on, right? This was seeded not even just in episode 1 of IPYTM, but way back at the beginning of I Told Sunset About You. The original fracture in Teh and Oh-aew's friendship is because of Teh's inability to roll with Oh-aew acting in a way that he doesn't like. He's jealous of him. He's jealous of how easy things come to him. He isโ€ฆ judgmental about Oh-aew's inability to stick with things, or to know exactly what he wants? He looks down on Oh-aew a little bit for being a follower, for adapting the interests of the people around him. Now in college Oh-aew gets to school and he's miserable, and he realizes he doesn't actually want to do the thing he thought he was there to do. And you know, let's not forget that Oh-aew is sitting in in the program that Teh gave up for him. Now Oh-aew never asked him to do that, of course, that was Tehโ€™s big dumbass mistake. But Oh-aew has the thing that Teh wanted and that Teh gave up, in his mind, for Oh-aew. And Oh-aew doesn't value it the way that he would, and he doesn't like it the way that he would, and he decides to give it up. And he gives it up to follow his new friends into their passion. Now, is that a totally fair way of looking at it? I don't think so: Oh-aew is clearly good at marketing. He has, like, a natural aptitude for it; it makes sense that he would go that way. But from Teh's perspective, he's just looking at Oh following his latest friends into the thing they're doing, and he kind of sees it as part of that same pattern.ย
So that was seeded so consistently throughout their relationship, that kind of tension point, and the way that Teh judges Oh-aew for this kind of behavioral pattern that he has? And so to see that come out in that fight, and for Teh's resentment of that to just continue to simmer and simmer and simmer, to the point where he cannot keep it together even in front of other peopleโ€”and he embarrasses himself even more than he embarrasses Oh-aew in that scene with his seniors. It was such a brutal scene but it also felt so real, it was such a real kind of fight that you see long-term couples get into, where one of them just starts digging at the other, knowing all their weak points and knowing all the worst parts to hit, and that's what we watched Teh do in that scene. And all of it was so, like, deeply seeded in the story that we knew exactly why it was happening.
NiNi
Doesn't make it any easier to watch.
47:05 - That snake Jai
NiNi
Now it's time to talk about that snake Jai, and I'm going straight to Mor on this because Mor and I watched this together live while it was happening. [laughs] Come through, Mor. Let's talk. Letโ€™s talk about Jai, let's talk about Teh and Jai, let's talk about how Oh-aew clocked Jai, just bring it out.
Mor
Oooh, that man. That man! The first thing that always comes to my mind that NiNi and I would just rant on, and we could not let it goโ€”because how could youโ€”is that fricking journal. The fricking journal! That was the most disgusting, manipulativeโ€ฆ I can't think of something more insidious as a plot device to use. Not only is there a power imbalance already between these two, because yeah, they're not that far apart in age, but Jai is in a place that Teh wants to be in. He is succeeding in the area that Teh is dreaming of being in. Teh is already looking up to him so much. From the first time that he walks into the acting club, he's hearing from other people about how important Jai is, basically. So there's already an an imbalance there.ย
Jai is experienced. He obviously knows how to read people and use them very well, we see that from the beginning. So I feel like he saw Teh, and just laser focused on him. And using the journal the way he did: it was like he asked Teh to make him a manualโ€”โ€™Go ahead, go ahead Teh, write out to me how I can best wrap you around my little finger and use you! Use you for my devices; use you to further my career, my dreams, my motivations. And once I have wrung you dry and left you with nothingโ€ฆ well, you know, whatever, I helped you! I, I helpedโ€”it's not my fault, we're not in a relationship. Weโ€™reโ€”I mean, this is just professional! This is acting, Teh! That's how it is!โ€™ I mean so much of Jai, and where they wound up, and just that whole relationship: it comes back to that journal. Again, it was just like a manual of how to manipulate him. It was so disgusting. I was so angry! [laughs]ย
I'm getting angry now, I've never been so upset watching what felt like a slow motion car crash where Teh is just completely unaware of what is happening, and how he is being played like a fiddle. And you just have to watch it go on, and because he's drifting away from Oh, there is truly nothing to help him. There are no guardrails. There are no safeguards at this point. And that's why to me, it was not shocking in the least what happened. As we saw it in ITSAY, he just feels and feels and feels first. He does not think first. [laughs] And the way that that whole relationship played out from the beginning, Teh was set up to fail.ย
Whoo! I'm gonna get off my soapbox now.
NiNi
[laughs] No, god, I love that so much. My thing on Jai is, when I saw Jai gaslighting Teh that was one thing, but then when he tried to gaslight Oh-aewโ€”that was when I knew that he was a snake and that was all I was ever going to think about him. But I think that Bookworm has some slightly different thoughts on Jai? So Bookworm, if you want to pull those out and tell us what they are.
Bookworm
Well, make no mistake NiNi, I also hate Jai so passionately. But the thing that struck me as soon as I finished episode 3 with Jai and Teh kissing in that rehearsal room, was that Teh tends toโ€ฆ have trouble trying to separate what his ambitions are and what his desire is. When it comes to Jai he is just somebody Teh looks up to, somebody who is ahead of Teh, who can guide him to the goals that Teh has set up for himself for so long. And, immediately he transfers all of that longing and the visceral need onto Jai. He keeps lusting on the personification of his ambitions, and I would argue that he does the same thing in ITSAY as well. There are certainly other factors but when we see how easily Teh got roped into Jaiโ€™s schemes and how heโ€ฆ let his heart sort of go with Jai wherever he pulled, because he was blinded by the ambition and the achievements that he wants in his career. There is a shadow of that in Teh and Ohโ€™s dynamic in ITSAY as well.ย
Another thing that I tried to keep an eye on after episode 3 was that, if there was no Oh-aew in Tehโ€™s life, would Jai be Tehโ€™s future self? Is that what Teh would become? There is certainly, few things that Teh does that feel so close to what Jai did to him. For example, when he showed up on Tarn's doorstep asking her to tell him that she loves him, but he doesn't want to say it back. It's not a far reach, you can see how Teh can easily become Jai, but there is also a part of him that I think is just not as ruthless. Like Mor mentioned, he is a human bulldozer, everything he does is just chaos and he only stops and reflects when he has just demolished everything in his sight. But he does reflect, right? He stops and he thinks about it. He talks to Oh-aew whenever they stop and have a conversation after whatever mayhem has happened, Teh can go into his mind and he can point out where he's going wrong, and he can see the things for himself without somebody else telling him: this is where you're making mistakes. He would just spell it out by himself, he has that ability to identify the ways that he's hurting the people around him, and the reasons that he's doing that. That is what sets him apart from Jai.
NiNi
So so so so so, so accurate. Given everything that Bookworm just said about the similarities between Jai and Teh, and the difference being Tehโ€™s ability to reflect versus Jaiโ€™s: we're given indications in the show that Jai feels guiltyโ€”I don't buy them necessarily, but Ginny, do you think that Jai feels bad about what he did? Not that he wouldn't do it again, [laughs] but do you think that he feels bad about what he did?
Ginny
So on my first watch I read Jai more sympathetically than on my second watchโ€ฆ which is less because I knew what was going to happen on the second watch, and more because I saw some of the nuances. Small indicators he was giving that he was calculating the whole time. I do still thinkโ€”like, Jai is not a monster; Jai is a human person. He clearly has the ability to see what he did to Teh. He knows how badly he hurt him and how he ruined that relationship. And I do think he feels a way about that. Like you said NiNi, he wouldn't do it differently. He's made his choices, and he's never given any indication that he would ever put another human's feelings above his goals.ย
And in his own way, he might think he is helping Teh, because for Jai, the artistic achievement and the career achievement is more important; the ambition is more important than anything else. And if he got Teh to a place where he performed very well in that playโ€”he got a request from an agent and it ended up launching his careerโ€”so Jai might look at that and say, โ€˜See I helped you, because I gave you something that you really really wanted. So what if I had to break your heart and this other person's heart and ruin your relationship to do it?โ€™ So I think he has feelings about that, but I think Jai's priorities are such that he would never regret what he did.
NiNi
Anybody else have thoughts on that?
Shan
I think that there was an intentional choice in the ending montage to show Jai reacting to the news that Teh and Oh-aew got back together? To give us a little bit of a sense that Jai does rememberโ€”I don't think he regrets what he did to Teh in that relationshipโ€”but he cares a little bit about it, enough to feel some sense of, maybe relief that they were able to work through it, and that whatever he did didn't totally destroy them forever? Frankly, I don't like the choice to show us that. [laughs] I don't care about Jai, I don't care what he feels about it. But I do think that was included intentionally to kind of communicate to the audience, like Ginny said: he's not a monster, he's a human, and heโ€ฆ very similarly to how we see Teh behave sometimes, he puts his ambitions first over the way he treats others. And I think they wanted us to see the humanity in that, and not totally just write him off as a villain.
NiNi
He can kiss my ass. Go Mor.
Mor
Them showing us that scene, to me, was the final nail in the coffin of, okay, all right, my read on you? Mhm, itโ€™s been right this whole time. [laughs] Okay, yeah, Jai probably isn't a monster but the thing is, from a personal perspective: I've known Jais. Something that NiNi and I talked about having backgrounds in the arts, dance, theater. We have seen Jais, we know Jais, I can see a Jai, I can spot one from twelve hundred feet away. Okay, they're not monsters, but they areโ€”the term gets thrown around way too much, but for me, they're the textbook definition of a narcissist, who thinks that they are god's gift, and that everyone is blessed by being in their presence, and that they are the top dog basically, and everyone else? They're collateral. Maybe they'll be useful. They're not out to necessarily get people but they're definitely out to use people.ย
And so showing us that sceneโ€ฆ What will always stick with me is Jai's smirk? It wasn't a smile in my opinion. Not a smile of โ€˜oh, you know, I'm glad that this worked out.โ€™ It was a casual over the shoulderโ€ฆ just a smirk. And then the casualness with which he walked off the screen. The fact that there were no words, there were no dialogueโ€”to me, it just spoke to how casually he viewed what he did. How it wasn't that big of a deal, and he's just going to move on. He's going to move on with his life, he'll probably never think of these people againโ€”and to me it really all comes down to intention. Teh may have done things that would have made him very similar to Jai, but Teh never had the intention to blatantly use people the way that Jai did. And while that doesn't make you a monster, it does make you a shitty human being. That really makes all the difference. And that scene to me was showing us without words Jai's intentions.
NiNi
Whooo, yes, let me tell you all about some of the nonsense that goes on backstage, understage, in the fliesโ€ฆ like some of the shit that I have seen? [laughs]ย
Susan, now I know you haven't seen I Promised You the Moon, but like I said you're our resident behavioral expert. So everything that you're hearing, what's something that you want to bring forward here?
Susan
Just as an aside, what yโ€™all are saying about these tendencies in the performing arts community? As someone who spent a lot of my life in a community of musicians, sounds familiar. I was already thinking about a former partner of mine who once told me that his gift to the world was going to be his music, and that my gift to the world was going to be how I facilitated him making his music. So, you know, I can relate to some of that stuff.ย
So, I was going to say, there's something about Teh that seems contradictory on the surface. And that is, he's clearly an incredibly sensitive person, I mean just look at the crying. He clearly feels a lot, and yet he can act so unfeeling. And what I'm hearing about this other person? This person sounds like someone who doesn't start from the base of perceiving those emotions in the first place. It just doesn't hit them as hard and they feel like they want more, because it takes a lot to, kind of register on your personal scale. So that's going to be my guess about this person. They're not already coming from a place of feeling for other people in a natural way. That's an educated guess.
NiNi
That's a very, very educated I guess.ย
1:01:38 - The Ending and Character Development
NiNi
I want to take that and sort of slide into the next idea. One of the things that struck me in the end of the show, particularly in episode 5 in that conversation that Teh and Oh-aew you have when they see each other again at the agency. Teh is talking to Oh about how he's having such a hard time coming up with his thesis play, and Oh is telling Teh, there's so much all around you. And I always tie that back to some of the things that Susan was talking about there that's also manifested in the way that Teh deals with his roommate.ย
Teh is, in his mind, rejected by his roommate at the beginning, and he rejects him right back, so he doesn't even realize or notice when his roommate breaks up with his partner. So when he breaks up with Oh-aew in the end, he's hostile at this point to his roommate. He hasn't even tried ever to build a relationship with him. He's not interested in anything he does. And his roommate says to him, โ€˜well why do you think I wouldn't understand you?โ€™ He realizes that he has not looked outside of himself at all. And thatโ€™s something that comes up again in the conversation with Oh-aew.ย
I think I rambled myself around a little bit, but I want to start getting into the end of the story and how that plays out, and Tehโ€™s reflection on his own behavior, on how he's been treating people, on the fact that he's not good at paying attention to people [laughs] and that has caused him problems in his life. Shan, I haven't come to you for a little while.
Shan
I actually really love Teh's arc in the final episode. After the big emotional episode, where he makes a big big mistake [laughs] because he's not thinking things through, he gets time: he gets time away from Oh-aew and time to move into a new phase of his life, and time to start having some new experiences, and even time to date somebody else after Oh-aew, and feel the difference in the quality of those relationships and what they do for him.ย
We kind of see him start to process, and understand that even though his ambitions are being realized? He is not fulfilled. He doesn't feel happy. He is an actor, he has a tv show, he's doing things he said he wanted to do, and he's dating somebodyโ€”his co-star, who is the perfect partner for that, right? She helps his career. They look great together. They have the same ambitions. She's very driven just like himโ€ฆ and he's not into it. He's like, โ€˜oh this isn't really doing things for me emotionally that I thought it would. Having a partner who is exactly aligned with the things I want to do is maybe not actually going to give me the satisfaction and the fulfillment of my desires that I thought.โ€™ And so, I actually think that's a really important arc for him. And then for him to then see Oh-aew, have all of that activated, have all of those old feelings come back, and realize that he actually wants to fight to get that relationship back. And he's bringing some of what he learned.ย
And I mean, you know, he's still the same person. He still has to do everything in the most dramatic way possible. He has to make it a big grand gesture, instead of a more organic attempt to reconnect with Oh-aew. I loved that in the resolution between them, what Oh-aew says is not โ€˜I trust that this will never happen again,โ€™ or โ€˜I feel really confident now that we're gonna, like, be great together.โ€™ [laughs] What Oh-aew says is, โ€˜I understand who you are, and I wanna be with you. And what I'm asking from you is a commitment to, like, not go off and spin out the way that you normally do when shit happens. Because shit is gonna happen again.โ€™ And Teh seems pretty confident about his ability to, like, commit to that.ย
I don't believe that Teh is never gonna stray again. I don't. I think he's probably going to end up having feelings for someone else again. It's the way he is. He just gets obsessive about things that draw his attention, and I think that that's probably always going to be the case. And so one of the things that they're going to have to work through is figuring out how that works within the context of the relationship they have, what their boundaries are around that. And that necessitates communication. So that's kind of the commitment that they're trying to make. And the trajectory of that can look different. Oh-aew at this stage in his life wants a monogamous relationship; maybe that will always be the case. And then they'll have to figure out how Teh can control these impulses that he has to make that work. Maybe they're going to learn that if they want to stay together long term, absolute monogamy maybe is not their solution. There are paths before them. But they have to talk to each other. They have to work it out together, and that's the commitment that they're making: that when shit gets hard, they will talk to each other. I really love that; it felt like a very adult resolution. It felt very grounded inโ€ฆ who they are as people and what they can reasonably expect of each other. It just felt so mature. You just don't see that very often in BL. So I really loved it.ย
I will say, the Oh-aew side of that arc wasn't quite as strong for me. And I think it's a little bit evident in the way that this conversation has gone, Oh-aewโ€”his characterization is not quite as strong as Tehโ€™s. I don't feel that the writing team had as much of a handle on exactly what they wanted to say with him and about him. So I do think there's a little bit of a missing piece to his part of this story. We saw that post-breakup Oh-aew was kind of thriving on his own, actually. He's doing great. He did very well in school, he's started his career. He's still got great friends. He's still got community around him. He is okay, he's content being single. And we saw that after Teh's first grand gesture, that he rejected him pretty firmly. He was like โ€˜no, you don't get to do this, this is not the way.โ€™ And then we didn't really see a middle step before he then changed his mind and decided to jump back in both feet with Teh. And it's not that that doesn't feel right? It does, because Oh-aew is always going to forgive Teh, always. He said it himself: โ€˜Have I ever left you, Teh?โ€™ No, he hasn't and he never will, probably. So it's not that it feels unrealistic, it's just that I wanted him to have a little bit more of an emotional arc there, similar to what we got for Teh. So that's my, like, small quibble with that. But overall I loved the resolution for their relationship; I loved the way they came back together and what the show said about the future in front of them.
NiNi
โ€˜Have I ever left you Teh?โ€™ is probably my favorite line in all of I Promised You The Moon. I want to step to Bookworm here, because I want to talk a little bit about Teh and reflection in the end of the story, and the role of the play. How Teh uses it to reflect and try to reconnect with Oh-aew, and how Oh-aew perceives that.
Bookworm
Weโ€™re very clear that Teh is somebody who does not like change. Who keeps things going till it reaches that breaking point. I want to maybe reframe it a little bit, and bring it back to the play. I think Teh tends to let things go, because I think he does not like being in the present. He is constantly either thinking about the future, or he's obsessed with something that has happened in the past. That's why Oh-aew was so pissed at that play, because that is not the conversation that he wanted to have. That is not something that Oh-aew wants to even address at that point, because they have moved past all of that, and there are things that they have to talk about that has happened in the present and at the moment. And Teh does not engage that way, it's just not his character, right? He doesn't do that.ย
Then we got to the ending, and Oh-aew has this conversation with Teh about how he just wants to be in his life, and he doesn't know where this is going to go but he just wants to be together. And then Teh does, again, just a chaotic maneuver and posts this Instagram picture, and it's identifiable chaos, right? That's a Teh that we know. But this time he is trying to solve a problem at the present, and that I think is how Teh has reflected. It may not be conscious; I'm pretty sure he has not sat down and thought through all of this. He's just thatโ€”as the time moved, he has done this shift within himself. He has turned that chaos somehow intoโ€ฆ a tool that he can use to try to engage with the problems that they have to deal with in the present, and not put it into the future so that it becomes such a huge ticking time bomb that just blows up on everybody's faceโ€”or just throw everything into the past and link it to some pivotal focal point that just shadows over everything else.
NiNi
Y'all are blowing my mind, and I'm loving this whole experience. Ginny: Shan mentioned not having as clear an understanding of Oh in this final act as she does of Teh, and I feel like you're a kind of an Oh-aew whisperer. So I don't know if you want to lean into your understanding and share with us what you're taking away from Oh in the final act of the story.
Ginny
I definitely seeโ€ฆ his arc and his journey is much more subtle, and you have to be watching really closely I think to read some of what's happening. But what I saw especially on my second watch is thatโ€”Oh-aew, up until he hears that Teh has broken up with his co-star, he has a very clear story in his mind about the breakup, and about Teh and why it didn't work out with him. And that story started when Oh-aew left acting. He knew that Teh wasn't okay with it, and even after they made up, Teh wasn't fully okay with it. And that degraded their relationship until the point of the Jai incident. Oh-aew was very clear that it was specifically an artistic partner that Teh was falling in love withโ€”and it was that bond, of having feelings for somebody that shared these ambitions was what pulled Teh into Jai's orbitโ€”and knew that he could never compete with that. And so the story I believe he's telling himself is that Oh-aew is never what Teh wanted or needed. Teh thought he did when he thought that Oh was going to be an actor, and along his side. But as soon as Oh moved away from that path, he stopped being the life partner that Teh was looking for.ย
One thing that always strikes me at the beginning of episode 5 is how happy Oh is to see Teh in his career success. He smiles when he sees him next to his actress partner on screen, he buys a magazine, and he doesn't seem to carry any bitterness about that. He's genuinely so joyful for Teh and his success. So part of his story is that Teh has gotten what he always wanted. He's got his career and he's got this partner that shares his ambitions which is what he's always wanted and neededโ€”what Oh couldn't be, and the reason they didn't work out. Oh has devalued himself in how he thinks Teh sees him. He does not fully see how important he is to Teh and how much he means to him. When he says, โ€˜have I ever left you?โ€™ It's very clear that Oh will always be by Teh's side, until that point when he accepts what he believes to be true, which is that he's not what Teh needs. And then he goes to the playโ€ฆ he rejects Teh immediately after the play, but I don't see that as a rejection of the idea of them getting back together, so much as a, โ€˜this is too much. Why are you throwing this at me right now?โ€™ And then he looks at the messages. That, I think, is when he realized that he himself is what Teh wanted, not the artistic partner. And I think that's part of why he comes back to him.
1:15:23 - Favorite scenes
NiNi
I want to just ask a fun round robin question before we get to the end. What's everybody's favorite scene in I Promised You The Moon? Let's start with Shan.
Shan
I'm gonna go for maximum pain: my favorite scene is Oh-aew confronting Teh after Teh, right in front of his fucking face, [laughs] attempts to get into a relationship with Jai. I have PTSD from that scene to this day! I cannot believe what Teh did in that sequence. The way that heโ€”right in front of Oh!โ€”was making moon eyes at Jai. The way that he went to talk to Jai to try to confirm that their feelings were mutual. The way that after Jai rejected him, he got up on stage to sing a song with Oh and started singing it at Jai! Making weepy eyes at him literally right in front of Oh's fucking face! And then I love that Oh called him on it immediately, hit him so hard with those flowers! [laughs] And I love that he just said, โ€˜how stupid do you think I am? You're doing this right in front of me.โ€™ย
I just loved how the show did not shy away from Tehโ€™s audacity in that moment, from how disconnected he had become from his reality. It was just the peak of his ability to delude himself and go into his obsessive episodes, and I just thought it was so well done.
NiNi
I think you and I are both fans of the angst and also the drama. Bookworm, what about you?
Bookworm
I'm gonna continue Shan's rage and go into the next most painful scene, which was Teh going to Q's house to talk to Oh-aew, and the conversation they have on the couch. Like I said before, when somebody tries so hard not to cry, or when somebody's trying so hard to not say something that is just dying to get out of them, and they're trying to hold back the words just to save themselves from the pain? Those are my favorite things. When Oh-aew finally breaks help with Teh, and Teh gets up from the couch and walks awayโ€ฆ there's a split-second frame where Oh turns back, and you can see the longing in his face. He is devastated and he wants to say so many things. But he just holds it back and he watches Teh walk away. That was such a well choreographed scene, and how the actors performed it, it was just such a delight to watch, and I came close to breaking. I had tears in my eyes and justโ€ฆ choked up in that scene.
NiNi
Mor, what about you?
Mor
I am a ho for well-done angst as well, so in a way I can't believe I'm saying this, but I have to go off about the quiet genius of the aquarium scene. That was possibly the most beautiful parallel I've ever seen in a show, and I see parallels everywhere, I adore them, and it's one that I will never get out of my head. It was like Teh was saying without words, โ€˜Oh, after all the pain I put you through, after everything it took for us to get here, I am taking us out of this underwater world we were in where we were hiding these feelings and I was terrified to show it to the world. And now? I'm choosing you in front of the world. I don't give a damn who sees us.โ€™ And yet it's in the same sort of environment where he first really let himself feel what he was feeling, that he let himself feel that desire and to show it to Oh.ย
That underwater scene in ITSAY was so pivotal for them. To go from thatโ€”and that that's the only way that Teh is willing to show him affection, is hidden, underneath the surface of the water, away from the worldโ€”to then be in this open aquarium in Bangkok, the biggest city in Thailand and he is kissing him. I get chills! I get chills. It was so well done, and it was done without words. You can't beat it for me, you just can't.
NiNi
Ginny I'm gonna come to you. What's your favorite scene in all of I Promised You The Moon?
Ginny
First I have to stop crying about the aquarium scene, because everything Mor said was true. My favorite scene is in episode 5 when Teh and Oh-aew first see each other at the agency. Coming into that scene the first time, I was really feeling like, โ€˜I care deeply about both these boys, I want them to be happy, but I don't really care if they get back together, and I think maybe they shouldn't.โ€™ As soon as they saw each other? The gravity of what pulls them together sets in for both of them, and you see the longing that still pulls them together, and I went โ€˜oh! never mind, I need them together again.โ€™ย
It's the same thing that is still my most vivid impression from ITSAY: the intensity of the love and desire that they have for each other, and how vital that is to both of them. One of the things that really impresses me in I Promised You The Moon is how naturally they play each stage of the relationship. When they're playing partners who have been together for three years, they feel like partners who have been together for three years. It feels lived-in, it feels comfortable, it feels a little bitโ€ฆ stale in the way that things can get if you're not paying attention? But still full of affection; it feels so right for that stage. But as soon as you've had them separated and then seeing each other again? All of that desire comes rushing back. And I love it. It is about the desire but itโ€™s also just about the deep roots of that connection that they share, because theyโ€™ve known each other so long and they go so deep in each otherโ€™s lives. And the way that that instantly revitalized my personal emotional investment in their relationship was just so powerful.
NiNi
I'm going to hold my scene for when I'm talking to Ben after in the outro, but great, great scenes from everybody.ย
We're going to close out with Susan, because I have to ask Susan the very important question. Okay Susan, you 've been sitting here, you've been listening to this entire conversation, and I just want to know: are you going to go and watch I Promised You The Moon now?
Susan
Oh how could I not? I feel like having this conversation, it seems almost like a boost where I would be more at a point watching I Promised You The Moon for the first timeโ€ฆ It would be more like having a second viewing for my first viewing. That's one of the reasons I actually, like I said, I like to be spoiled? It tells you where to put your attention. I'm going to definitely be looking in different places, thinking about different things beforehand in a way that I think would be better than if I watched it just cold.
NiNi
Mission accomplished! [laughs] All right guys, we're going to wrap this up here, we could keep talking forever but we gotta go!
1:23:51 Outro
NiNi
Ben, so you were lurking in the background of that recording [laughs]. And unlike me, you actually heard what we said, and now having listened to the edit as well: what are some of your thoughts?
Ben
I gotta be honest. I was not chatting with you like I normally am when we're recording, so I was very drunk while you all were recording [laughs] for two hours! I did not remember the middle of the recording at all! I'm sorry, I was not present.
[both laugh]
NiNi
But you have heard the edit. So.
Ben
Oh, everyone sounded so good! I really liked the conversation you guys had getting into the fact that Teh was always like this. There was this huge pushback when the show was originally airing, that Teh was acting out of character, and that they had somehow misunderstood their own characters and ruined them. But I really liked that the panel was very much about how Teh was always this way. And Jai knew that about him and used that against him.ย
I also love that you all hated Jai, that was so fun to listen to again on the recording. I was very conscious for Bookworm going off about Jai, because she hates him so much! [both laugh] I'm also glad that we were able to get Mor on the podcast twice! We do not talk about Mor often in our recordings, but know that they are one of our favorite people, and that they were able to make time to be with us twice is a real gift.
NiNi
I did quite enjoy what we're referring to as the โ€œfuck Jaiโ€ portion of the panel [laughs]. I was gratified to find out that Bookworm hates Jai probably just as much as Mor and me.ย
[laughs]ย
I think one of the things that, listening back to the panel, that I really obviously wanted to get across was the fact that Teh has always been this way. This is how Teh always was. This is how Teh probably, in some ways, ever shall be, and to say otherwise is to basically ignore the Teh of I Told Sunset About You. I think that when it comes to Teh and I Told Sunset About You, people got bogged down in the romance and forgot all the bullshit. And, my god, was Teh full of bullshit. [laughs] So watching Tehโ€™s bullshit continue, and him eventually learn to try to curtail it slightly? That was a delightful journey, the way that I saw it. I quite enjoyed that.
Ben
I really liked Ginny bringing forward the discussion about Oh's friend group, and the queerness of that friend group, because I don't think I grokked it the first time, that any of them other than Q were queer. But having watched some of the scenes after Ginny pointed them out, it's very obvious. And I think that that's really well done, because they're queer for the people who know queer people; they're just Ohโ€™s friends for the people who don't. And I liked that.
NiNi
In the ending, I did a round robin with the gang about everybody's favorite sceneโ€”because you know me, I'm a scene bitch. I will always find a favorite scene, whether it's in an episode or in an overall show. I will always want to know what everybody's favorite scene is. I feel like that's better than a personality test. [laughs]ย
So what was your favorite scene in I Promised You the Moon?
Ben
Right now, it isโ€ฆ the sceneโ€”I believe it's in episode 4?โ€”with Mek, when he talks about how Teh never showed any interest in him. Because he's only just mildly hurt and disappointed in Teh about it, and it caps off, like another episode of Teh just spiraling in his own bullshit again?ย
It stands out because Mek was like, โ€˜bro, we've been here for years and you ain't said shit to me,โ€™ and that's basically Teh. He's so rigid, either people fit into his vision of his life or they don't. And they don't exist if they don't fit into his vision. And it was kind of rude of him to just presume that about his roommate right away, who was clearly trying to make overtures of friendship to him for like two to four years? That scene is currently the one that comes to mind when you ask.ย
That or Bas coming back to be like, โ€˜Are we still talking about this man?โ€™ย
[both laugh]
NiNi
Shade!
Ben
My favorite Billkin and PP scene is probably when they put PP in Ohโ€™s shirt with his heart cut out, and he's watching Teh look at Jai when they're supposed to be singing a song together. And then he beats him with the flowers.
NiNi
I feel like Oh-aew beating Teh with those flowersโ€ฆ it was a pivotal and necessary moment. At the time, it cleared my skin. It watered my crops. [laughs] It fed, nourished, and sustained me. I rewound it several times. I asked Mor to make gifs.
Ben
There's so many good scenes in that show.
NiNi
Can you not pick a favorite? Or does your favorite rotate?
Ben
It rotates. I think what's interesting is, my favorite scenes in I Promised You the Moon are not with Oh and Teh. My favorite scene that PP does from a work standpoint, that I think is one of PP's best, is the audition scene where he's faced with homophobia. And you can see his decision to quit acting happening in real time. Like I thought that was really, really good.ย
I also really like the scene where Teh is mean to Khim because she can't make acting work. Because Teh is so wrong in that scene.
NiNi
I also go back and forth a lot. But I think if I had to count an absolute favorite sceneโ€”
Ben
It's the Jai kiss!ย
[NiNi laughs]
Ben
It's the Jai kiss! Because Oh catchesโ€”and he's like โ€˜that rat bastard!โ€™
[both laugh]
NiNi
It's the Jai kiss for a lot of reasons. The filmmaking in that scene is so impressive. The way that they build the tension of the scene, of you watching Teh make this terrible, horrible mistake, and then intercutting between Oh-aew coming to find him, and him getting closer and closer to Jai, and then him laying one on Jai, and then that long dolly shot of Oh-aew spotting them through the door of the rehearsal room? So you just see Oh-aewโ€™s face. You see it change, and then there's this looong dolly shot that pulls back into the rehearsal room and then you see Jai and Teh making out. The filmmaking is just next-level, like everything about itโ€”the shot selection, the music, the sound, the camera workโ€”perfection.ย
So with that said, we've come to the end of our I Told Sunset/I Promised You the Moon third anniversary retrospective. That's it from us, we're about to wrap this up, we'll see you next time. We out! Say bye to the people, Ben.
Ben
Peace!

Gonna drop this quick and run. But hear me out. I will start by saying that Ricky may very well have genuine feelings for Gina. I'm not dismissing that. I just couldn't help but notice somethings about Ricky's reactions here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As soon as EJ and Gina start fighting in 3.05, Ricky immediately covers his ears (kinda like a child does when their parents are fighting at home). I get the feeling he was used to his parents fighting a lot when he was younger, and his instinct was to cover his ears. He also looks at both EJ and Gina in 3.06 during the canoe scene. I think it's at that moment that he realizes just how much EJ and Gina truly care about one another, and how much they're fighting for their relationship. Thinking back to S2, he was also fighting really hard for his rela with Nini. But he learned to let her go because that was for the best. He actually gets that advice from his mom, who he understandably holds a lot of resentment towards. I could be wrong, but I read his expression in the 2nd gif as someone who has seen his own parents fail to save their relationship, but sees two people, despite all their recent tensions, still fighting for their relationship.
Earlier that day, Ricky comes face to face with his dad's new girlfriend and is presented with a gift from Mike via Miss Jenn:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I definitely think Ricky still feels uncomfortable at the idea of his teacher and father dating, even if he's trying to act like he's okay with it. When he receives the gift, he's not exactly happy about it. It's sort of surprises him, but not in a good way. Perhaps it's a not so subtle reminder that things have really changed for him back home. Later that day, he sees EJ and Gina trying their best to save their relationship, then hears this from Jet that night:
Tumblr media
Jet, being "little Ricky" and all (3.02), admits that he feels like it's his fault Madison and Maddox broke up. Does that not sound like how Ricky feels about himself in terms of his parents marriage? Perhaps he also blames himself for the downfall of his parents relationship. He couldn't save it or fix it. Instead of dealing with his own problems, Ricky is throwing himself into Jet and Maddox's issues to try to save their relationship. I think the majority of Ricky's issues in terms of romantic relationships always goes back to his parents, which they still haven't fully addressed. Three seasons in a row, and Ricky's main storyline revolves around his love life. If there's any chance for Ricky to truly move forward and find the path to true happiness, this season has to end with Ricky single and not ready to mingle and being okay with that. He hasn't taken any significant amount of time for himself to himself. I also think it's difficult for him to see EJ and Gina have the kind of summer he was expecting to have with Lily. While I don't think Lily broke his heart, I do believe she broke his trust. He even blames himself for why things fell apart because he said "How could I be so stupid?" in 3.01 during his breakup w/ Lily. He shows up to camp and the first image he sees are a genuinely happy and loving couple (Portwell). It seems like Ricky wants what they have because he was expecting to have a fun summer in a new relationship. Jet's line above definitely hit a nerve for Ricky because I think it reminds him of how things fell apart for his parents. In order to escape the pain he's feeling, Ricky tries to "fix" the relationship problems around him. One last thing, I don't think it's a coincidence that 3.06 is the first time this season that Ricky's acknowledged his past with Nini (also in conversation with Jet). In Ricky's eyes, he's had two failed relationships in a short amount of time, and to overcompensate for that, he tries to fix everyone else's relationship problems instead. I'm wondering what the last two episodes have in store for his character arc, because so much of it so far has been romance-based. For this character to actually progress in a positive way, he has to learn that it's okay to not be okay and that true happiness doesn't come from being in a relationship.

just finished binging the entirety of high school musical: the musical: the series in six days and now i'm going to ramble about it for longer than anyone would care to read. it's gonna be generally positive but definitely nini and olivia unfriendly so if you dont wanna read that... dont โ™ฅ๏ธโ™ฅ๏ธ
so i suggested to my sister a while ago that i wanted to watch the show bc the videos that youtube commentary channel "pretty much it" did for it were hysterical. and she had watched the first couple of eps by herself and was like "i dont think you'll like it. its not as funny as they make it seem". but we finally decided to start it anyway
(also i dont know the entire casts' real names so i'll mostly refer to them as their character names)
season 1:
that first season was kind of rough. especially the pilot. it got better over time but its definitely my least favorite season over all. im not even a fan of high school musical so it lacked the nostalgia enjoyment for me
and i definitely did not like nini and her main character syndrome. and sorry to say but i think olivia is the least talented cast member over all. pretty privilege is so real like she didnt deserve to be the break out star she was just the most marketable. kourtney and ashlyn's voices were so strong and stellar, and they might not've been Dancers but they could definitely move. and gina was the best dancer in the fucking world and while i do think her voice wasnt as good, she could obviously still sing. nini's best talent moments were when olivia was shining thru imo (that one taking it for gra-a-a-anted song comes to mind first) but i was not here for the acoustic numbers and honestly i dont think she was a great actress
so i definitely wasnt a fan of the whole nini ricky gina ej love square. i know its a tried and true teen show staple but goddamn it got tiring. i just never liked rini and i didnt like how nini treated him right from the start asklfjlds. she was also rude as hell to everyone else, especially gina, being all passive aggressive towards her. literally saying she wanted to kick gina in the face bc gina is a good dancer and she's intimidated?? but also all the talk in general about gina being intimidating or aggressive or a bad seed like ??? the microaggressions were off the charts
not to mention the fucking macroaggression of kourtney's entire s1 "character". i think hattie mcdaniel had a more nuanced role in gone with the wind. it was so fucking painful to watch. she didnt exist to be anything other than nini's personal soundboard, cheerleader, stylist, life coach, and whatever else she needed in the moment. thank god they gave her a real character by s2 bc kourtney was way too talented, too gorgeous, too charismatic to be forced into the role of nini's handmaid the whole time
i dont really have much to say about s1 cause i wasnt into it at the time lol. it was okay. all the actors did a good job, it was kind of funny, the only song that really stood out was miss jenn's fantasy sequence song with lucas. the actually high school musical show they put on was painful to watch but thats high school theater for you babyyy
season 2:
this was such an improvement from s1 and my favorite season over all. there were a handful of eps in the middle where i was constantly like "this is my fave ep" "ok this is my fave ep" "ok now THIS is my fave ep" it was a delight. i love beauty and the beast and was so happy for ashlyn getting belle, and everyone else was very well cast. although idk why seb was chip and not cogsworth?? my sister said it was bc disney didnt want to confirm that they were gay ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ’”
the music was obviously better bc we've got fucking alan menken on the track. all the numbers from the show were perfect. i wish ej had gotten to sing the gaston reprise bc he didnt get to reach his full gaston potential and i think we deserved that ๐Ÿ’”
the debacle with the whole rose song was sooo annoying. nini deserved to be that fork. she dragged the whole show down like it was always so much better when she wasnt there aklfjlksd
the rivalry with the other school was lots of fun. i liked all the new characters. my favorite original song was miss jenn's number with derek hough
season 3:
this season was likeee a pleasant mid for me??? idk it was fine and fun but it didnt have anything in it that blew me away. i think this season was screaming for extra episodes more than any other, since we were missing a chunk of the cast. we deserved to cut back to salt lake every now and again and see what the non-camp-goers were up to
kourtney and gina as elsa and anna was a dream. not the biggest fan of frozen but they did a good job. everyone looked so cute in their costumes and kourtney's solo was amazinggg. the new characters were fun but i dont have strong feelings towards them lol. but i loved getting to explore kourtney's character and her struggles with anxiety, that was very real
them filming a documentary was funny bc have they not been filming one this whole time? my headcanon was that the to-the-camera interviews were all in their heads and everyone was practicing for when they became famous lol but then ricky ruined that in s4 by acknowledging them directly rip ๐Ÿ’”
i liked after their show ended and they all got sharpies and wrote their names on the walls back stage. that was definitely a potent theater kid memory and got me a lil teary eyed
i liked ej taking on the role of director and copying miss jenn's hand holding and high pitched singing at the first read thru. i liked ej and gina together i thought they were cute. it was disappointing that the show wouldnt commit to them for even a minute and they always had to be teetering on the edge between being a couple and not. that was frustrating
and girl just get nini out of there already. olivia wanted nini to be there as much as i did. she was sooo over it by s3
umm favorite original song was corbin bluh's basketball song
season 4:
very very fun season again. loved the chaos of filming the movie at the school while school is happening. as if every movie set in a real school doesnt shoot in the summer. oh well. gotta have a season!
there was too much mack for me personally. i dont think he gave wanted they wanted to be given. i needed more dani tho. her actress was so good at bad acting. she couldve been a much bigger comedic presence also she looked like a cross between sofia carson and emma roberts but sometimes just looked like a latina emma roberts ??? is that just me??
and still the lack of seb and big red at the beginning like ?? did they specifically piss off the writers so they had to banish them for nearly half the show?
loved that the little girl from camp was there. she stole the show. and maddox and jet are fine alskfjsldk i just didnt form strong opinions on them but i do like them
ashlyn's "i need to give her mouth to mouth! AS A FRIEND!" was the funniest line of the entire show hands down
so happy they finally had a halloween episode! it was lots of fun and everyone looked so cute in their costumes uwu. but that guy from camp that was stalking carlos??? that was so bizarre and it never paid off likeee what was the reason
and gina's mom was pissing us off so bad. she was acting wild this season. like gina has to focus on her studies so no boys but she can work from sun up to sun down on a movie lmao. and her mom had the nerve to be like "well i never came to your shows bc that was just high school theater but THIS is a movie" like wooow. and i swear it felt like she was about to sell gina off to mack bc he was famous. and when she started with that "porters dont wait around" mess and ricky cleared her with a quickness with that whole "well i seem to remember gina waiting around for you on opening night" like damn
and omg when mack was over for dinner and ricky came over with chocolates but saw him thru the window. i was like ugh fuck its gonna be the stupid thing where he sees this and gets the wrong idea and its gonna be a stupid wedge between him and gina that doesnt need to be there bc no one can communicate BUT THEN gina sees him outside and runs to him and i think i screamed bc i was so relieved aslkjskl but their kiss was very cinematic and cute โ™ฅ๏ธโ™ฅ๏ธ
and omg on sunday night im sitting there trudging thru s1 like "yeah starting this might've been a mistake" and by friday im bawling my eyes out bc the story is ending ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ’” sofia deserved the whole fucking egot and a golden globe too for that scene at the end. and i was SO invested in her acting career and like pleading with the show for her not to pass on it and stay at school but fucking genius that she is found a way to do both!!!
and i honestly didnt know what i wanted miss jenn to do like i was rooting for her both ways but of course she staaayed. and the show ended and it had the "skip credits" button and my sister was like "oh there's something after the credits?" and then i saw "for good" listed at the end of the songs and i screamed again. and was bawling again when everyone was singing that. who knew this silly little show would have such a death grip on me by the end???
so over all it was really very good and not a waste of time. i liked pretty much every character and it was just a lot of fun! would definitely watch it again
my over all season ranking would be two, four, three, and one is dead ass last
my favorite characters from the start were gina, miss jenn, carlos, ashlyn, and big red lowkey alskfjdskl. kourtney got up there in s2 and beyond. and i do really like ricky, ej, seb, they're my secondary faves. (kinda wish ricky had more to do bc aside from his parents, i feel like every single one of his issues had to do with a love triangle and i just wish the character was granted a little more texture) and the camp kids were good, they were fine, they're like third-iary faves. and the only ones i dislike are gina's mom and nini lol
and i wasnt like screaming over any ships but generally i liked them all except rini. ej and gina was cute, i liked ashlyn and maddox, i liked ashlyn and big red, carlos and seb probably were my faves if i had to pick, i liked kourtney with howie (wish we saw him again) and jet, and yes by the end i was rooting for rina they just won me over this season and were super cute and im glad they ended where they did โ™ฅ๏ธ

This is my first drabble day and iโ€™m so excited ๐Ÿ˜ญCould I request Jinhae calling Kins during the first week of being moved out and asking his Nini for a sleepover? ๐Ÿฅน
Kinsley sighed contentedly as Mason rolled off of her, their early morning love making session leaving her completely sated.
"Fuck, that was amazing," Mason sighed, flopping back against his pillow. "We haven't been able to do that in forever, at least not since Jinhae came along."
"Right?" Kinsley muttered. "Even once we were done having babies, we still ended up with one in the house that we had to be quiet for."
"And now, we're almost empty nesters," Mason smirked. "Aiden's 16 and gone all the time because of basketball. We have two kids married, each with families of their own and the third kid has finally moved out. I'm so close to having you all to myself again."
"I don't know if my pussy could handle that," Kinsley giggled, making Mason laugh as well. Before he could respond though, Kinsey's phone started to ring on the bedside table.
"Kins," Mason whined when he saw her reaching for it.
"It could be important," she huffed as she looked at the incoming FaceTime call. "See look, it's Brook. Hello?"
"NiNi," Jinhae's little pout appeared on the screen.
"Jinhae," Kinsley grinned. "Hi baby. What's the matter?"
"I don't like this house," Jinhae muttered, his pouting deepening even more. "I miss NiNi and Poppy's house."
"Well, we miss you too baby but it's gonna take some time for you to like your new house," Kinsley explained gently. "And don't you like Daddy being there all the time now?"
"Yeah," Jinhae nodded. "Daddy reads to me every night now."
"See?" Kinsley smiled.
"I still miss you NiNi," he continued. "Can I come to sleep at your house? With you, in the big bed?"
"Of course you can baby," Kinsley agreed instantly. "I'll talk to mommy and tell her to bring you on Saturday, ok? That's only one sleepy away."
"Ok NiNi," Jinhae nodded. Just then, Kinsley heard her daughter's voice in the background.
"Jinnie? Where are you?" She called out. "And where's my phone?"
"Uh oh, I have to hang up before mommy comes!" Jinhae gasped. "Bye NiNi! Love you!"
"I love you more baby," Kinsley giggled before hanging up the call. She felt her eyes getting a little misty and when she looked over to her husband, Mason was just smirking knowingly at her. "Not a word."
"Crying because your grandson called and said he wanted to stay the night with you," Mason chuckled. "You know, you're turning into your father." Kinsley grabbed a pillow then and whacked Mason in the face with it, hard.
"Take that back!" She screamed.

You and Ricky had been planning to get to the El Rey early on opening night since tech week, to make sure you have plenty of extra time to get ready, warm up, and get in character. Plus, youโ€™ve been telling him how much youโ€™ve missed just being in theaters, and near stages. The more time youโ€™re there, the better. When youโ€™re on the way over Ricky couldnโ€™t shake the excitement gripping him. You canโ€™t seem shake the feeling something was going to go wrong.
It was different from nerves, different from anxiety or worries that everyone can get before a big event. It was the same small, nudging feeling you got the night the basement flooded during your run in Matilda. Itโ€™s not as bad as it had been that time, but you take in a breath, steadying yourself and knowing you should be ready for anything. When you do, the feeling is quickly overshadowed by your excitement. You havenโ€™t acted in far too long, and youโ€™re ecstatic that youโ€™ll get to perform again soon.ย
Once you get to the theater, you and Ricky are the first to sign the sign in sheet. You draw a little smiley face next to his name, and when he glances back at you, eyes falling on the paper. He smiles, struck by sudden joy at the little face. He leans back over and grabs a pen, drawing a smiley next to your name on the line below. Miss Jenn glances down when he returns the pen.ย
โ€œOh!โ€ she exclaims, seeing the little faces, โ€œHow cute. I love this energy weโ€™re creating.โ€ she gestures vaguely before shooing you off to your respective dressing rooms to get ready.ย
Soon everyoneโ€™s there, and youโ€™re once again wrapped up in the familiar hustle and bustle of show nights. You and your castmates are simultaneously getting in costume, warming up, and trying to get ready while helping each otherโ€™s hair and makeup. Ashlyn and Nini join you in an impromptu karaoke session, singing your hearts out to Bop to the Top while Nina riffs and harmonizes. The boys, one or two rooms away, start singing Getcha Head in the Game at the same time. In spite of the chaotic cacophony of voices, it's both a good way to warm up, and a good outlet for the nervous energy growing, bouncing from one person to the next, turning electric.ย
Kourney enters suddenly, grabbing some bobby pins.
"Do you know if you have any safety pins?" She asks.
"Uh," you pause doing your hair, tying it up into a bouncy low half updo, and fumble through your bag, "how many do you need?"ย
"Two or three?" She says hopefully. No matter how many you buy, bobby pins and safety pins always seem to be in short supply at every theater you've been to. You dig around for a minute before finding them, handing them to Kourtney.
"Thank you!" She declares, "Seb's shirt just completely-"
"Has anyone seen my glasses?" Ashlyn asks, and Kourtney pauses, noticing she's not wearing them.ย
"Shit," Kourtney mutters, both of you looking around for them.
"Knock knock!" Comes Sebโ€™s voice from behind the door.
"Decent!" You and Ashlyn reply in unison. Seb enters, holding the side of his shirt together with his hands.ย
"Any luck?" He asks Kourtney.ย
"Right here," she replies, holding up the safety pins. "Turn around." Nina puts in her headphones and starts doing some vocal exercises and scales to warm up a little more. Seb lifts up his jacket so Kourtney can pin the ripped seam back together.
"Oh," she remembers, "have you seen Ashlynโ€™s glasses?"
"The really big ones?" He asks.
"Yeah."
"Nope." He shrugs. She turns to Ashlyn.ย
"We'll find them." Kourtney reassures her. Seb heads back to his dressing room he shares with Ricky and EJ, and you move on to the last few steps of your makeup routine.ย
"Where are they?" Ashlyn huffs rhetorically. Natalie pokes her head in a moment later.ย
"40 minutes till show time!"
"Thank you 40!" The three of you reply together. A little while later, youโ€™re finally dressed and waiting for the glue on your eyelashes to get tacky, when you hear EJ call your name. You stumble out of your dressing room, zipping up your boot, and youโ€™re greeted with EJ in his Chad costume, clearly in a huff.ย
โ€œCan you help me with my eyeliner?โ€ he asks, a slightly petulant tone to his voice, handing you a black pencil. You laugh.ย
โ€œYeah, hold on.โ€ you go back into your dressing room, passing by Seb telling Kourtney something. You dig through your makeup bag as Seb reenters, Darbus glasses in hand, presenting them to Ashlyn.ย
"Where were they?" She exclaims.ย
"The prop table!" He says.ย
"Why?" Ash asks, stating your thoughts exactly.ย
"Natalie says they're technically a prop because in the detention scene when youโ€ฆ" you find what you're looking for, missing the tail end of his sentence as you leave a moment later with a stiff angled brush in hand. You grab EJ and lead him to the stairs where he can sit down. He does so, and you rub the bristles against the eyeliner, demonstrating for him.ย
โ€œThis will make the application a lot more precise. Close your eyesโ€ฆโ€ you instruct, tilting his head back. You smudge the outside of his lash lines, careful not to make it look like too much.ย
โ€œOkay, now this is the scary partโ€ฆโ€ you trail off, gently lifting up his eyelid. โ€œI swear Iโ€™m not going to stab you, just look down and donโ€™t blink.โ€ you instruct at the worried look on his face. You tight line the middle of his lash line for a defined, natural effect, then repeat the step on the other side.ย
โ€œOkay,โ€ you say, pulling away to check that it looks even, unaware of Ricky standing a few feet away, watching you hold EJโ€™s face. You look so focused, and a twinge of jealousy flashes through his stomach, wishing you were holding his face, looking focused at him like that.ย
โ€œYou should be good,โ€ you say, and Ricky approaches, dragging you away as EJ thanks you.
โ€œI just need to borrow her for a second.โ€ he cuts EJ off, smiling tensely at him - one he returns. Ricky takes you a few feet away while EJ goes back into their dressing room.ย
โ€œWhatโ€™s up?โ€ you ask. He lets out a breathy laugh.
โ€œI justโ€ฆ I canโ€™t figure out this whole bronzer thing.โ€ You bite back a smile. You know thatย  itโ€™s bullshit, specifically because you went through his whole stage makeup routine with him twice last night. He could do his makeup and anyone elseโ€™s with one hand tied behind his back, so he obviously just wants your attention. You canโ€™t deny that itโ€™s really cute - and itโ€™s working. Heโ€™s probably nervous, you figure. You chuckle, taking the brush from him.ย
โ€œMake a fish face,โ€ you instruct, sucking in your cheeks and puckering your lips. His face mirrors yours, and you blend the product into his foundation. Your hand rests on his jaw, angling it this way and that until youโ€™re satisfied with your work. He glances briefly back at the stairs, where EJ has long since left. Rickyโ€™s about to look for any other excuse to keep you here for a few more minutes, your eyes light up, remembering something.
โ€œOh!โ€ you exclaim, turning around, โ€œStay right here.โ€ Youโ€™re back a moment later after digging through your bag past bobby pins, safety pins, your water bottle, script, sewing kit, extra makeup, makeup wipes, bandaids, and throat lozenges. You grab a small box, holding it triumphantly before running back out to Ricky in the hall. You stand in front of him, that glimmer in your eye.ย
โ€œI have a surprise.โ€ Excitement swirls in his chest.
โ€œWhat is it?โ€ he asks, trying to suppress the anticipatory giggle bubbling up, his energy matching yours. You hand him the small box, and he looks at it, confused. He opens it slowly, pulling out a little charm. Itโ€™s a dog tag with the number 14, and a metallic T on a jump ring.
โ€œOh my godโ€ฆโ€ he breathes, looking at it closer. Youโ€™re beaming, so glad that he likes it.ย
โ€œYou know,โ€ you say softly, โ€œsomething to remember your first show by. And your heart ring was looking kind of lonely.โ€ You smile, pointing to the plastic ring he still wears around his neck, waiting until the last possible minute to take it off. You barely get the words out before he grabs your arms, pulling you close and kissing you. His lips are warm as they move against yours, and for a split second, you forget where you are, completely losing context for everything around you.ย
โ€œI love-โ€ he murmurs against your mouth, freezing for an instant. Your hearts skip a beat in tandem, then he cuts himself off to kiss you again. โ€œI love it.โ€ he finishes. You smile against his lips, pulling away very reluctantly. He leans back in, pressing a few more kisses to your lips before you wiggle out of his grasp.ย
โ€œRicky!โ€ you laugh, โ€œWeโ€™re gonna mess up our makeup. We can kiss after the show.โ€ He runs his fingers up and down your arms, gazing at you as you talk. You have all his attention.ย
โ€œOkay,โ€ he says in that light hearted, joking tone of his that always makes you laugh, โ€œbut Iโ€™m gonna hold you to that.โ€ You laugh again, and he takes off his necklace so you can slip on the new charm. After getting it fixed on the chain, you reattach it to his neck.ย
At the end of the hall where youโ€™re standing, Nina lingers, watching Ricky touch you and kiss you like that. It makes her sick, and she finds herself holding back a gag. Her hours of research had turned into days, and she has your playbill.com page open on her phone at this very moment. Sheโ€™s torn, reminiscing over how much she loved your performances and how obsessed with you she was as a kid, and simultaneously fuming over it. Youโ€™ve done all this professional work, youโ€™ve acted on Broadway, and now youโ€™re here at East High?ย
She scoffs, shaking her head in disbelief. She wanted so badly to be you, to have your perfect life, and you threw it all away for what? To come do crappy high school theatre in a town that couldnโ€™t be further from New York? She fights a laugh suddenly, realizing just how much dirt she has on you. There must be a reason youโ€™ve been keeping this secret, lying to everyone, lying to Ricky. She shakes her head. She doesnโ€™t know why yet, but sheโ€™s going to find out.ย
35 minutes before curtain, Miss Jenn gathers everyone for circle time, and a cast meeting to boost morale before the show. Everyone is finally in costume and Kourtney follows Seb, makeup pallet in hand, adjusting the finishing touches to the glitter on his cheeks. You can feel the energy stirring and growing, electric between all of you.ย
โ€œMost of you know that our dazzling Taylor had to leave under family circumstances. Gina sends her love and support, but has left for the east coast and will not be able to make it to tonightโ€™s performance.โ€ Miss Jenn says. You and Ricky share a look, trying not to be too obvious. You got Gina a plane ticket together, and your mom is at the airport right now to pick her up. The last you heard from her, Ginaโ€™s flight was delayed. Now thereโ€™s only a slim chance sheโ€™ll get here in time. You silently keep your fingers crossed, praying to whatever theatre gods are out there that sheโ€™ll make it to the theater before it's too late.ย
โ€œAnd so,โ€ Miss Jenn continues, โ€œI have askedโ€ฆ Kourtney to fill in, in her place!โ€
The room erupts into cheers. Kourtney smiles, eyes on the floor bashfully. Sheโ€™s praying she doesnโ€™t seem as nervous as she feels. Itโ€™s not that she didnโ€™t expect you guys to be supportive of her subbing in as Taylor, but seeing first hand how excited everyone is for her eases some of the worries that have been building up.ย
โ€œNow,โ€ Miss Jenn continues, โ€œeveryone join hands.โ€ After some heartfelt words of encouragement and other usual circle time warm ups, she claps her hands.
โ€œLetโ€™s go, wildcats! 20 minutes to curtain!โ€
Once again, the room erupts into cheers.ย
โ€œNow, if I can get my main characters and my ensemble members starting the show with a mic on stage for mic check?โ€ she directs, pointing towards the way to the wings. You walk with everyone else towards the stage, pausing when you pass Miss Jenn.ย
โ€œDo you want me to help Kourtney get ready?โ€ you ask. Her hair and makeup are done, she just has to get in costume, but you can sense that she needs a pep talk.ย
โ€œThat would be fantastic,โ€ she says with a look that indicates she thinks Kourtney could use a pep talk too, โ€œthank you, Sharpay.โ€ She pulls out her walkie to let Big Red know you and Kourtney are going to be released from mic check early to finish getting ready. After singing Weโ€™re All In This Together while Big Red adjusts your volume from the sound booth, Kourtney sings Bop to the Top, voice getting louder and quieter as Red tweaks the settings. Once youโ€™ve both gotten the thumbs up, you scurry backstage to your dressing room, handing her costume pieces while she gets changed.ย
โ€œOh, wait,โ€ you say before she pulls on her top. You grab your setting spray you use for shows from your bag. โ€œClose your eyes.โ€ You mist her face with the product, fanning it dry so it doesnโ€™t smudge.ย
โ€œThanks,โ€ she says. You take one look at her expression, and can tell sheโ€™s nervous.ย ย
โ€œYou okay?โ€ You ask. She hesitates, then sighs.
โ€œI had two weeks to learn all my lines. I had two weeks to learn all the lines and the songs, I havenโ€™t even gotten to rehearse on stage with you guys, and Iโ€™m just so worried Iโ€™m going to blow it, or choke in front of everyoneโ€ฆโ€ she trails off. This is clearly the tip of the iceberg, and she fiddles with her bracelets, trying to get out some nervous energy.ย
โ€œThere is no way youโ€™re going to choke.โ€ you say confidently, โ€œYou know this show inside and out! Plus, havenโ€™t you been running lines with Nini the whole time?โ€ you ask.
โ€œYeah,โ€ she replies, listening carefully, trying to grab onto your reassurance.
โ€œAlmost all of Taylorโ€™s scenes are with Gabriella.โ€ You state. Her expression changes as she realizes youโ€™re right. She knows this part better than she was giving herself credit for.ย
โ€œPlus there will be scripts in the wings if you need to refresh between scenes.โ€ย
โ€œYeah,โ€ she says again, more confident this time. โ€œI know my lines, I know the songs, I know the dances - mostly, at least - so itโ€™s all going to be fine! Even if the choreography in Stick to the Status Quo is still totally terrifying, and I have no idea how to dance with a lunch tray or do a death wack, itโ€™s going to be fine!โ€ Her laughter turned from relieved to slightly panicked again.ย
โ€œYou think youโ€™re nervous for Stick to the Status Quo?โ€ you ask rhetorically, a comedic note to your voice, โ€œI have to get caked in the face!โ€ You exclaim with a chuckle. Youโ€™ve only practiced with an actual cake once, during the last tech rehearsal, and it was messy, to say the least. Literally and figuratively.ย
Kourtney laughs, remembering the whipped cream that got everywhere, how loud you were yelling in character before storming off. It took more makeup wipes than you'd expected to get the sticky sugar off your face.ย
โ€œWeโ€™ll get through it together.โ€ You state, holding out your hand. She squeezes it, reassuringly.
โ€œYeah. We will.โ€ย
โ€œFive minutes to places!โ€ Natalie calls, poking her head in.ย
โ€œThank you five!โ€ you both reply. You check your phone one last time, the new text from your mom stating that sheโ€™s still at the airport, waiting for Ginaโ€™s flight. You text Ricky the same thing, letting him know youโ€™re all still waiting for more updates on the delay. The good news is that your momโ€™s friend from work - who was planning on coming to see the show anyway - is going to stream the show to your mom until she can get there, that way she wonโ€™t miss anything.ย
It doesnโ€™t feel like five minutes has gone by when Natalie is calling for places, ushering everybody into the wings and into their starting places and positions. Hushed whispers of encouragement and break a leg spread through the wings, and everyone falls silent as Miss Jenn begins her curtain speech. Itโ€™s unusual for a group of such high energy people to be so still, so quiet, and you soak up every moment of it. This is your favorite part - or one of them, at least; it's those few fleeting minutes when everyoneโ€™s backstage in the wings, the opening of the show is seconds away and hurdling closer and closer with every breath, every heartbeat. This is one of those magical, transformative, fleeting times that can only really be described as in between.ย
You never knew just how much you would miss this, the distinct and irreplaceable energy, the feeling of being in a theater. Tears spring to your eyes as it really hits you that youโ€™re home, back where youโ€™ve always needed to be. You close your eyes, taking deep, measured breaths to focus, to get into that headspace of being in character. Even with your eyes closed, you can feel it around you; the rich wood and cement mixing into different sections of the floor, the heavy curtains, the grid and catwalk and lights, all intangibly high and far away. Itโ€™s beautiful. Itโ€™s so beautiful that you donโ€™t know how your body is supposed to contain it. You know now that you could never leave, not really. Theatre will always be your home, and you know this feeling will only solidify more and more with time. You realize, too, that itโ€™s a home that will always grow and change and evolve with you, because thatโ€™s in its eternal, fleeting nature. Thatโ€™s the most beautiful part, you think.
You squeeze Sebโ€™s hand in excitement and encouragement and every other good thing, a gesture that he returns. In spite of the silence and the stillness, you know that everyone is just as excited as you are. Rickyโ€™s in the opposite wing, or else youโ€™d be squeezing his hand right now too right now. You use this moment, this stillness that's growing and getting more charged with energy every second, to become laser focused on giving this performance everything you've got - on really getting your head in the game.ย
Nini looks around, then over at Ricky - again. Heโ€™s been avoiding her this whole night, and she canโ€™t stand it. She leans closer.ย
โ€œI need to talk to you. After the show.โ€ someone shushes her, and she lowers her voice, continuing. โ€œSheโ€™s been lying to you about everything. You donโ€™t know everything about her, Ricky.โ€ย
โ€œYes, I-โ€ he cuts himself off, not wanting to feed into this. Not now. โ€œI have to get into character.โ€ He says, moving away from her. He tries to focus on the energy the cast is creating around him, on becoming Troy. He takes a breath, centering himself.ย
โ€œWithout further ado, I am proud to presentโ€ฆ East Highโ€™s High School Musical: the Musical!โ€ Miss Jennโ€™s voice is drowned out by applause, and the music begins.ย
The first few songs and scenes go smoothly; everyone is on time and remembering their cues, and the audience couldnโ€™t be more engaged, applauding and laughing right when you want them to. During Jack Scottโ€™s announcements after Darbus reveals what the winter musical is going to be, you leave to get ready for What Iโ€™ve Been Looking For. You pass by Ricky, whoโ€™s quick changing for Getโ€™cha Head in the Game, and shoot him a big thumbs up.
โ€œGreat job!โ€ you whisper enthusiastically, stomping your feet quietly in excitement.
โ€œThanks,โ€ he smiles, beaming as he pulls on his jersey. He watches you scurry down the hall before getting nudged toward the stage right before his cue. He shakes his head, wondering why he let Nini get him so worked up before. Of course he knows you. He knows everything about you! Thereโ€™s absolutely nothing on earth you could tell him that would throw him off, or scare him away from you. Sheโ€™s probably just making something up to get in his head, to drive a wedge between you. That seems like something she would do lately.
โ€œLetโ€™s see some hustle! Move, move, move!โ€ Coach Bolton calls from onstage, and Ricky jogs over to him, as ready as he'll ever be.
โ€œSorry Iโ€™m late, coach.โ€
As much as he doesnโ€™t want to admit it, as much as heโ€™s trying to stay in character and stay focused on the scene, Niniโ€™s words are still echoing in the back of his mind, throwing him off a little. He catches his dadโ€™s eye in the crowd as the music starts. He doesnโ€™t think heโ€™s ever looked this proud, and it steadies Ricky. He takes in a breath, and begins to sing. Part way through the song, he notices a woman in the crowd who looks weirdly like his mom. He doesnโ€™t miss a beat, making sure to look in his dadโ€™s direction instead. Thatโ€™s weird, he thinks, but it canโ€™t be her. Thereโ€™s no way sheโ€™d come all the way from Chicago for something like this. Just like what Nini said to him before the show, he wonโ€™t let that distract him from performing, and tries not to let that throw him off.
During the dance break, he gets hooked up to his harness, and his stomach erupts into excited butterflies as he slowly moves up. Thereโ€™s a collective gasp from the crowd that turns into cheers as he hovers in front of the hoop, ball in hand. Up here, heโ€™s not blinded by the stage lights, and he looks down at the crowd, able to see his dadโ€™s face even better than before. Heโ€™s filled with such euphoria, he knows youโ€™re right - nothing can beat this feeling. He feels more alive, more awake than he ever has, simultaneously enveloped by a deep sense of peace, of rightness that he doesnโ€™t want to let go of.ย
On the other side of the auditorium, someone moves, catching his eye. Some guy is making his way into his seat, presumably because he showed up late. He leans over to his date, kissing her and touching her leg. Nothing could have prepared Ricky for what he saw when he pulled away. Past the blinding stage lights, his stomach plummets back down to earth as heโ€™s able to make out more faces in the audience - including hers. Sheโ€™s here. Sheโ€™s really here, and she brought that douchebag with her. Sheโ€™s whispering something in that bastardโ€™s ear, barely five rows away from his dad. Theyโ€™re all over each other, talking close and kissing and smiling.ย
Itโ€™s only when she points up at him that he snaps out of it. He realizes the pit has been waitin for his cue a beat or two longer than usual, and follows up quickly with it. He had dropped his basketball when he was up there, and heโ€™s scrambling to make it through the rest of the number. He tries desperately to get back into character, to focus on the lyrics and choreography, to focus on the music instead of what he just saw in front of him, but he canโ€™t shake what just happened, what he just saw. Even as heโ€™s being pulled backstage to change into the costume for his next scene, it takes all his effort not to let that overwhelm him. He canโ€™t crumble right now, not like this. Thereโ€™s a whole cast and crew, all his friends, that are counting on him. He gets some water, tries to pull himself together.ย
EJ looks for Ricky backstage, having a few minutes before their next scene. Even he has to admit he was impressed with Rickyโ€™s performance back there. He looked so conflicted, so torn between basketball and singing. He even managed to make his distracted blocking and choreography look so organic EJ was worried heโ€™d messed up for a second. Heโ€™s been giving him a hard time, butting heads on and off stage, but Ricky is really shining tonight. Heโ€™s committed, and EJ has to commend him for that.ย
โ€œRicky,โ€ he says, just loudly enough to get his attention. Ricky turns around. โ€œI have to hand it to you; youโ€™re doing great out there, man. You deserve all the applause youโ€™re getting.โ€ย
Ricky takes a breath, closing his water bottle.
โ€œThanks.โ€ย
He stares into space to the ceiling on EJโ€™s right, gripping his water bottle until his knuckles have a white cast to them. EJโ€™s brow furrows. He actually seems a little out of it.ย
โ€œAre you okay?โ€ he asks carefully. Theyโ€™re not really close like that, but even EJ can see that he seems a little off.ย
โ€œIโ€™m fine,โ€ he says a little too fast. โ€œI am totally fine. Because itโ€™s opening night, and nothingโ€™s going to ruin this.โ€ย
Suddenly it makes sense. He knows exactly what Rickyโ€™s going through. He sighs.ย
โ€œLook, everybody gets stage fright. Just take a deep breath, and use the music and your lines to stay grounded.โ€ He claps Ricky on the shoulder supportively.
โ€œThanks,โ€ he chokes out again. EJ leaves to fix his mic tape, and Ricky is once again exactly where he doesnโ€™t want to be - alone with his thoughts. Even though EJ has no idea of the scope of issues Rickyโ€™s dealing with right now, his advice might still work. Instead of waiting in his dressing room, he hovers in the wings, going over the chemistry class scene as it happens, waiting for the lights to go down so he can talk to you, or at least be near you. Heโ€™s so tempted to barge onstage and drag you away with him. Instead he listens closely to your dialog with Gabriella. Just hearing your voice is enough for him to hold on to for now.
The lights go down, and you exit into the wings. Youโ€™re surprised to find Ricky there - he usually comes up about half way through Jack Scottโ€™s narration. One look at his face and you know somethingโ€™s wrong. Before you can ask, heโ€™s pulling you into a less busy area by the prop table.ย
โ€œSheโ€™s here.โ€ He grips your arm, hand shaking. He doesnโ€™t need to say anything else, you already have a full grasp on the gravity of the situation, the effect this is having on him.ย
โ€œHere?โ€ you ask, needing to clarify, and he nods. โ€œAre you okay?โ€ you ask sincerely.
โ€œIโ€™mโ€ฆโ€ he struggles for an answer, โ€œtrying to be.โ€ You take his hands in yours so gently he doesnโ€™t even notice until your thumbs are stroking his skin reassuringly.
โ€œOkay,โ€ you say calmly, and he can see the gears turning, see you figuring out the perfect solution as you speak. โ€œWhy donโ€™t you have some water, stay right here, and Iโ€™ll go get Miss Jenn, okay?โ€ย
He nods, and you move quickly to Natalie, asking her if she knows where Miss Jenn is. She picks up her walkie talkie, asking Miss Jenn to come to the stage right wing. Jackโ€™s narration scene wraps up and the crew changes the set to Darbusโ€™s detention. You have seconds before you have to get out there, and you turn to Ricky, worried about him.ย
โ€œAre you going to be okay?โ€ you ask in a hushed whisper.ย
โ€œYeah.โ€ he says, โ€œI think so.โ€ย
You see Miss Jenn walking toward the stage right wing as youโ€™re about to head onstage.
โ€œWeโ€™ll talk to her right after.โ€ you tell him in a hushed, reassuring whisper. You give his hand one more squeeze before you find your places in the dark. Moments later, the lights are up, and the scene begins. In all the time youโ€™ve spent acting, youโ€™ve gotten very good at staying in character, compartmentalizing thoughts and worries about your personal life while youโ€™re onstage. You find it a little more difficult to keep the disgust at Lynne Bowenโ€™s blatant lack of basic respect, or even awareness for the consequences of her actions, buried in the back of your mind as the scene plays out.ย
Sitting on the wooden flooring of the stage, warm under the bright lights, Ricky does exactly what heโ€™s supposed to do - he uses the scene and dialog to stay grounded. He follows the dialog while doing his stage business, listening for his cues just like Miss Jenn thought him to do. If he stays in character, he doesnโ€™t have to think about any offstage drama. As long as he doesnโ€™t look out to that section of seats, as long as he can keep his eyes from being magnetically drawn there, heโ€™s going to be fine. He stays in character, stays right there as Troy, clinging to his character like a life raft. If he can be Troy, he doesnโ€™t have to worry about everything heโ€™s going to have to deal with as Ricky for just a few more minutes. It's desperate and fleeting, but it's the only thing he can do right now.ย
Soon, the lights are down, and youโ€™re hustling toward the stage right wing, where you know Miss Jenn is waiting. He finds your hand in the dark, the sparkly pink sequins on your outfit unmistakable even in the darkness. He holds onto you desperately, until youโ€™re both standing in front of Miss Jenn. She knows from one look that whatever is going on, itโ€™s bad.ย
โ€œUm," Ricky starts, swallowing hard, "my mom is hereโ€ฆโ€ he hates that his voice is already trembling so soon. It sounds more like a question than a statement, and his stomach twists at how foreign the word now feels in his mouth. My mom. The last time he called her that had been months ago when he told you and Miss Jenn what had happened. Ever since heโ€™s only referred to her through pronouns and as briefly as possible, trying to disconnect the person she is from who she was supposed to be. Who he thought she was. The closest heโ€™s gotten to addressing her has been vague statements; she didnโ€™t call back, or I think that was her recipe, letโ€™s find a different one. Actually saying it, actually calling her that makes his jaw feel stiff.ย
โ€œMy god.โ€ Miss Jenn says softly, unable to believe that she could have the audacity to show up unannounced after what she put Ricky through. Ricky hesitates, and she knows thereโ€™s more. She nods, waiting for him to continue.ย
โ€œAnd she, uh,โ€ he swallows thickly, hating his throat for tightening up so much when he has to sing in a few minutes, โ€œshe brought her boyfriendโ€ฆโ€ Your eyes widen and Miss Jenn gasps.ย
โ€œTheyโ€™re in the sixth row, they keep talking and kissing, and-โ€ he cuts himself off, unable to continue. His hands are balled up, tight and shaking.ย
โ€œOkay. Ricky, sweetie, why donโ€™t we talk about this somewhere a little more private.โ€ You both guide him to the boysโ€™ dressing room, and after making sure no oneโ€™s in there, she sits down facing him, and takes his hands in hers.ย
โ€œFrom the beginning, what happened?โ€ย
He was barely able to get it out the first time, but now he canโ€™t stop. Everything heโ€™s been trying so hard to ignore and shove down for the last 20 minutes - and itโ€™s felt way longer than 20 minutes - comes tumbling out. He doesn't think he could stop talking if he tried. He doesnโ€™t even realize how loud heโ€™s getting until Miss Jenn gently shushes him.ย
โ€œWe donโ€™t want the audience to hear us.โ€ he nods, taking a breath for the first time since he started talking. You left a minute ago to check on how much time you have before the next scene, and reenter the dressing room now, looking stressed.ย
โ€œTheyโ€™re almost done with Auditions.โ€ you state. You need to go up there now, you and Seb have What Iโ€™ve Been Looking For soon, and you donโ€™t want to miss your cue.ย
โ€œGo,โ€ she says. Ricky nods, so you do, knowing that Miss Jenn has this under control, that she can help Ricky right now. Your footsteps recede, and Ricky turns back to Miss Jenn.ย
โ€œRicky,โ€ she starts calmly, โ€œwhat she did was wildly inappropriate.โ€ He already feels a little better, less crazy, and he waits for her to continue.ย
โ€œShowing up unannounced with aโ€ฆ" she chooses her words carefully, "date, wasโ€ฆ probably the worst thing that could have happened tonight.โ€ย
โ€œYeah,โ€ he scoffs in agreement. She continues.
โ€œYou have every right to be as upset as you are. Whatever you need right now, just tell me, okay?โ€ He nods. โ€œI think what we should do is get your dad, and let him know whatโ€™s going on. I can try to have one of the ushers escort her out, but Iโ€™m sure the last thing you want tonight is even more drama.โ€ย
โ€œGot that right,โ€ he breathes, relieved.ย
โ€œIโ€™m going to talk to EJ and see if he can go on as Troy-โ€ย
โ€œWhat? No.โ€ he protests.ย
โ€œRicky-โ€ย
โ€œNo, Miss Jenn- I have to play Troy. Please, I have to!โ€ย
โ€œIt might be best for you-โ€ย
He stands up suddenly. โ€œWhatโ€™s best for me is going out there; acting and singing, like we rehearsed -ย  like Iโ€™m supposed to! Please, you canโ€™tโ€ฆโ€ย
โ€œOkay,โ€ she says, standing up and trying to calm him down a little. โ€œOkay. If you think you can do it, you can go back out there.โ€ย
He relaxes a little.ย
โ€œThank you.โ€ his voice breaks as he speaks, and she realizes how badly he needs this right now.
โ€œWhy donโ€™t we revisit this at intermission, see how youโ€™re feeling then? Just to check up on you.โ€ she adds quickly.ย
โ€œOkay.โ€ he agrees. She puts a hand on his arm.ย
โ€œIโ€™m going to let EJ know to get ready, just in case you change your mind. Weโ€™ve got to be ready for anything, right?โ€ She smiles gently, one he tries to return.ย
โ€œRight,โ€ he says. A stagehand pokes his head into the room.
โ€œTroy, we need you.โ€
โ€œBe right there,โ€ Miss Jenn says. She claps her hand over Rickyโ€™s one more time. โ€œOkay, Ricky, hereโ€™s whatโ€™s going to happen. Youโ€™re going to go out there and sing a ballad with Gabriella that will make the audience swoon,โ€ he smiles, โ€œand I am going to do my best to get this situation resolved as quickly and discreetly as possible. If anything else happens, or you need anything, come tell me right away.โ€
โ€œOkay.โ€ he says, this time, with a note of determination in his voice. Miss Jenn pats him on the back, sending him off. He runs through the halls, making it just in time. Once heโ€™s in the wings, she pulls out her phone to text Mike, and fill him in on everything thatโ€™s going on. He enters on Gabriellaโ€™s cue, and Miss Jenn pauses, watching him deliver his lines. All the distress, all the pain melts away as he steps into character.
Itโ€™s giving him a break from everything, she thinks, it has been the whole time. Theatre isnโ€™t just a luxury or a passion for some people, itโ€™s a means of survival. It hits her all at once, that in staying here, in facing the challenges and struggles that came from directing this show, sheโ€™s helping Ricky through one of the hardest things heโ€™ll ever go through. Sheโ€™s become the person she needed when she was his age; with only one parent, feeling completely lost at sea. Her chest squeezes, and she watches them sing, their voices sending a chill through her.ย
Backstage, in the few dark moments of the set change for Cellular Fusion, Nina somehow manages to corner you.ย
โ€œWhat did you do to him?โ€ she demands, and you know sheโ€™s referring to Ricky, who exited to the other wing. You stare at her, aghast. You lean in close, lowering your voice, desperately holding on to your professionalism.ย
โ€œWe have to go onstage, literally right now. I am not doing this with you right now.โ€ย
โ€œHuh,โ€ she scoffs with a fake smile, โ€œyouโ€™re one to talk.โ€ You have approximately two seconds to look at her, baffled by everything sheโ€™s saying, before you have to go on. You enter, and hit your mark. At the cue, you and Seb begin to harmonize. Right as you do, your phone - tucked away in the wings - silently begins to buzz. Your phone lights up with a text from your mom, informing you that Ginaโ€™s flight has finally landed, and theyโ€™ll be at the theater any minute.ย
You run off stage as Cellular Fusion wraps up, and Miss Jenn and Carlos are trying to figure out what to do about the Taylor dance break coming up. Kourtney has been doing great so far, but she doesnโ€™t think she can handle choreography that complicated with so little time to rehearse.
โ€œI could tell the pit to cut that sectionโ€ฆโ€ Carlos offers. You check your phone and your eyes light up, looking at the doorway.ย
โ€œUh,โ€ you start with a smile, โ€œI donโ€™t think that will be an issueโ€ฆโ€
Miss Jenn, Carlos, and Kourtney look over at Gina, smiling timidly.ย
โ€œOh, thank god,โ€ Miss Jenn chokes out. She turns to Kourtney, then Gina. โ€œYou, go out there before you miss your cue. And you, quick change into something more 2006 before the dance break.โ€
They both agree, and a stagehand runs over with something for Gina to change into, guiding her to the dressing rooms.ย
โ€œIs he doing any better?โ€ you ask Miss Jenn before you go on. You donโ€™t have much time, but you need to know if heโ€™s okay.
โ€œA little,โ€ she says, โ€œI think.โ€ You both know itโ€™s better than nothing, and youโ€™re just hoping whatever heโ€™s doing keeps working.ย
Stick to the Status Quo couldnโ€™t be going any better. Thereโ€™s so much happening, so much organized chaos, that he forgets about everything for a few wonderful minutes. Thereโ€™s no time to think about that when heโ€™s dancing on tables, begging his classmates not to sacrifice their individuality so they can fit in. It only gets better when you and Seb enter toward the end of the number. You look so genuinely pissed off that people are breaking free from the boxes theyโ€™ve been put in, and your voices sound perfect harmonizing together, reverberating through the auditorium.
He tries in vain to stop Zeke from giving you a cake, watching with bated breath as it smashes into your face. He turns away, just like heโ€™s supposed to, but his eyes accidentally land on the one place in the audience he shouldn't be looking at.ย  His stomach plummets. Has she been on her phone this whole time? After running from everything this whole night, it finally gets the best of him. He canโ€™t stand it any longer, running into the wings as you let out an ear shattering scream, loud enough to finally make her look up.
โ€œSomeoneโ€ฆ is goingโ€ฆ to pay for this!โ€ you yell furiously, before the lights go down. The curtain draws to a close as applause thunders through the building. The lights in the house go up for intermission, and you hear a slow rise of chatter as people mill about and make conversation as you exit the stage. You grab a makeup wipe a stagehand has ready, thanking them as Natalie calls out that intermission is starting, and you have 20 minutes to places for act two.
โ€œThank you 20,โ€ you call out distractedly, searching for Ricky. You run to the back, wiping the rest of the whipped cream off your face, and check the boys dressing room to see if heโ€™s in there. He is, sitting in there by himself, seeming worse than before. One look at his face and you know something else happened.
โ€œShe was on her fucking phone the whole time!โ€ he states in disbelief, โ€œLikeโ€ฆโ€ The words dry up as he holds a pillow in his lap in a death grip.ย
โ€œOh my godโ€ฆโ€ you say, shaking your head. Heโ€™s not doing good, clearly. No one would be in his position. He pulls you in for a hug as soon as youโ€™re close enough, one you reciprocate. He holds onto you tight, feeling just a little more stable as soon as youโ€™re in his arms. Surrounded by your familiar grasp, itโ€™s just a little easier to breathe, to think clearly. Unfortunately, it also means he has a much clearer grasp on everything thatโ€™s happened tonight and how itโ€™s affecting him, how he feels about it. His dad is right behind you, and he lets go of you long enough to stand up and greet him. His dad pulls him into a hug, patting his back.ย
โ€œIโ€™m so sorry, kid. I had no idea she was going to pull something like this.โ€ Mikeโ€™s voice wavers, and when Ricky doesnโ€™t answer, you know itโ€™s because heโ€™s choked up. Miss Jenn enters a moment later, walking over to Ricky and Mike.ย
โ€œThe both of them have been removed from the premises.โ€ She states.ย
โ€œThank you,โ€ Mike says earnestly.ย
โ€œOh, it was nothing a little faked parking violation couldn't take care of,"ย  she says, earning a small smile from Mike. She turns to Ricky, continuing. โ€œI filled you dad in on whatโ€™s been going on, too.โ€ย
โ€œMaybe we should just go home,โ€ Mike offers, knowing he probably wonโ€™t want to.ย
โ€œNo,โ€ he protests, โ€œI can do act two, I want to. Plus, if we leave now, sheโ€™ll know where we are and sheโ€™s going to ambush us again, and-โ€ย
โ€œThe one place youโ€™re guaranteed not to run into her is here at the theater.โ€ you finish quietly.ย
โ€œYeah,โ€ Ricky agrees, motioning to you. Mike considers, weighing his options. Since sheโ€™s gone, if Ricky thinks he can handle it, he doesnโ€™t see why he canโ€™t do the second half of the show - especially since he seems to want to so badly. Maybe now isnโ€™t the time to take that away from him, even if he means well.
โ€œOkay,โ€ he sighs. โ€œBut if anything happens, if you change your mind at all-โ€
โ€œYouโ€™re the first to know.โ€ Ricky agrees quickly.ย
โ€œI want you to stay plugged in with me, okay?โ€ Mike says, putting a hand on his shoulder, โ€œText me when youโ€™re not onstage, let me know how youโ€™re doing.โ€ Ricky agrees again. Miss Jenn looks between them.ย
โ€œAlright. Well, in that case, Ricky, you should get changed for act two.โ€ She says with a tentative smile. He nods.ย
โ€œThank you. Thank you guys.โ€ he says sincerely to his dad and Miss Jenn. Before you leave, you catch his eye.
โ€œIโ€™m going to refill my water, then Iโ€™ll be back here, okay?โ€ย
โ€œSounds good." He says, "Hurry back,โ€ he adds quickly, giving you that sweet look with those big puppy dog eyes, and it makes your chest squeeze.ย
โ€œAbsolutely.โ€ you agree.ย
You barely leave the dressing room before you're met with Nina. She barges forward and stands in front of you, arms crossed, and you realize she's waiting for you to move out of the way so she can get into the boys' dressing room. You don't budge.ย
โ€œI need to talk to Ricky. I heard what happened, and I'm the only one who can convince him to go on for the second act, and I donโ€™t need you-โ€ย
โ€œWow,โ€ you begin, cutting her off, once again amazed at her audacity, โ€œnow is really not a good time. Donโ€™t go in there and stir things up.โ€ย ย
She looks you up and down, letting out an indignant scoff.ย
โ€œDonโ€™t act like you know him like that. Iโ€™ve known him since we were in kindergarten, I know him better than anyone.โ€ย
You take in a deep breath, trying so hard to stay patient.ย
โ€œSure. You know him better than anyone.โ€ you say, in a pacifying tone, โ€œSo you should know the last thing he needs is more pressure on him when heโ€™s in the middle of a family crisis, right?โ€ The question is rhetorical, and you continue, patience with her finally starting to run thin. โ€œIf you actually care about him, then for the sake of his well being youโ€™ll leave him alone and let him get through this. Now is really not the time, Nina, read the goddamn room!โ€ย
The sentence is finished with an aggravated, humorless laugh. Your priorities right now are Ricky, and getting through opening night. You need to help him process some of the shit that's been happening tonight, make sure heโ€™s okay, so he can perform like he wants to. The last thing he needs is Nina barging in there and telling him heโ€™s letting the cast down, or that heโ€™s not serious about theatre, and that he should have quit after auditions - all of which youโ€™ve heard more times than you can count over the duration of rehearsals, even up to a few days ago.ย
Youโ€™ve tried so hard to be patient with her, but dear god, sheโ€™s really starting to get on your last nerve - nevermind the fact that you have a special type of hatred for the kind of people like Nina, who shit on people that are still learning about something they have more experience in; like telling someone theyโ€™re not serious about theatre because itโ€™s their first show, for example.
โ€œDo not fuck with him right now.โ€ you state, rolling your eyes at her shocked expression.
You push past her, walking over to the water fountain. She watches you walk away, mouth hanging open, and lets out an indignant scoff. You swear to god, if one more thing goes wrong tonight, if one more person tries you, youโ€™re going to absolutely lose it. You take a few deep breaths as you fill up your bottle, trying to calm down and center yourself a little. Once youโ€™re done, you start to walk back to the dressing rooms, but youโ€™re stopped by a woman who is definitely not cast or crew. She sees you and approaches, seeming a little pissy.ย
โ€œIโ€™m looking for Ricky Bowen?โ€ she states. As she speaks, your stomach drops.ย
You recognize her voice from when you heard it on the phone, and from the voicemail Ricky showed you over Thanksgiving. This is Lynne Bowen. As in, the Lynne Bowen. The one that left.ย  The same woman whoโ€™s made such a tactless and selfish decisions over and over that have ultimately caused her son to be on the verge of a breakdown just down the hall from where youโ€™re standing right now.ย
โ€œYou are not supposed to be back here.โ€ you state, desperately trying to figure out how to handle this. You pull out your phone and text Miss Jenn, โ€˜code red, really need backupโ€™.
โ€œCan you just tell me where Ricky Bowen is? Iโ€™m his mother.โ€ she says it in a way immediately expects sympathy from you, sympathy she doesnโ€™t receive. You stare at her blankly, and she continues, much less kind than sheโ€™d been pretending to be. โ€œI need to see my son, okay? Maybe when youโ€™re a mother someday youโ€™ll understand-โ€
Youโ€™re not sure what about her, about the way sheโ€™s talking to you specifically is the last straw for you, but your patience is already running so thin itโ€™s practically transparent. Against your better judgment, you cut her off.ย
โ€œHe does not want to see you. He doesnโ€™t want to speak to you - or be anywhere near you right now, for the record - and you need to fucking respect that, okay?โ€ you say decisively, offense written all over her face, โ€œAnd you are really not allowed to be backstage if youโ€™re not cast or crew, which youโ€™re clearly not-โ€ย
โ€œYou are way out of line, young lady!โ€ she yells, โ€œI donโ€™t care if he doesnโ€™t want to talk. Iโ€™ll talk to him if I want to; Iโ€™m his mother.โ€ย  She adjusts her purse, clearly expecting you to fold, to tell her where he is. You know you should keep your mouth shut, you know you should be diplomatic and patient and professional like you always are, you should wait for Miss Jenn to handle this, but youโ€™ve spent the past three months watching Ricky suffer because of this woman and her choices. You canโ€™t stay quiet when the woman who hurt him is right in front of you.ย
โ€œI think you lost the right to pull that shit when you walked out the door and chose not to be in his life!โ€ you snap, a dangerous smile on your face. The stunned look on her face is better than anything youโ€™ve ever seen. Itโ€™s clear no one has ever tried to take her down a peg until now.ย
โ€œHow dare-โ€ย
โ€œYou gave him a free pass to hate you forever, because youโ€™re not the parent who stayed! You didnโ€™t try-โ€ย
Your words lose momentum as you find yourself suddenly looking at the wall to your right, your cheek stinging. The sound of her slapping you across the face echos across the walls for a moment before fading away, and you freeze, tears prickling the corners of your eyes from shock.
โ€œListen here you little slut,โ€ she says, much more ferocious than before. All facades of a concerned mother have melted away. โ€œYou have no right to talk to me like that-โ€ย
โ€œWhat the fuck?!โ€ย
You snap out of it, and she turns around at Rickyโ€™s voice at the end of the hall.
โ€œRicky, my baby,โ€ she starts, walking toward him, but sheโ€™s thrown off at how distant he seems toward her. โ€œIโ€™m sorry you had to see that, this girl is so-โ€ย
โ€œDonโ€™t ever talk about her like that again.โ€ His voice is stone cold as he brushes past her, analyzing your expression closely to see if youโ€™re alright.ย
โ€œAre you okay?โ€ he asks, voice shaky.
โ€œIโ€™m fine,โ€ you say as calmly as possible, โ€œare you okay?โ€ย
Heโ€™s decidedly not, but he tries to pull himself together.ย
โ€œIf you are, thatโ€™s all that matters.โ€ Behind him, growing impatient, Lynne takes a step forward.
โ€œRicky,โ€ she demands. He takes a breath, and leans closer to you.ย
โ€œYou should change for act two.โ€ You look between them, wishing there was something else you could do, some way that you could make this better. You agree, stopping before you leave for your dressing room.ย
โ€œText me if you need anything.โ€ you say seriously, and he agrees, understanding the subtext of your words. Text you if he needs backup, or if it gets to be too much, because youโ€™re there for him. Lynne moves toward him again.ย
โ€œCan we talk?โ€ she says with a domineering tone to her voice, and you both know itโ€™s not a question. You want to object, but all he wants is to get her away from you. He nods, indicating you should go, and you do - albeit, very reluctantly. He turns back to her.ย
โ€œYeah,โ€ he says seriously, โ€œI think we need to.โ€ย
She grabs his arm to lead him down another stretch of hallway, but he shakes her off immediately, walking a few feet in front of her.ย
โ€œRicky, are you alright?โ€ she demands, once theyโ€™re relatively out of earshot. She crosses her arms. โ€œI was so worried about you when you ran offstage like that.โ€ย
โ€œIโ€™m surprised you noticed.โ€ he murmurs. She either ignores him or doesnโ€™t hear. Regardless, she continues.ย
โ€œWhy did you leave? Is it stage fright? Because a lot of people are counting on you, honey. You made a commitment to this-โ€ย
โ€œYouโ€™re one to talk about commitment,โ€ he mutters, voice low, but loud enough to be heard. His impulse control is not at all where it should be, especially with how she just talked to you, what she called you.
โ€œIโ€™m sorry?โ€ Lynne demands. Sheโ€™s not used to Ricky yelling at her. Sheโ€™s always had a lot of influence over him. He used to do everything she said, heโ€™s always been such a mamaโ€™s boy until now.ย
โ€œI mean, do you ever think about anyone besides yourself?โ€ he snaps, โ€œDid you even care that you ruined the only thing Iโ€™ve been able to count on in my life- I can never get this night back, Lynne. And nowโ€ฆโ€ he trails off, trying so hard to regulate his emotions, even though he knows heโ€™s out of control. He takes a shaky breath, trying with everything he has inside him to reign it back in a little.ย
โ€œ...Why would you bring him to the show?โ€ย
Lynne looks stunned at his question.ย
โ€œWh-โ€ she starts, โ€œThis is about Todd?โ€
โ€œWhy would you bring him here?โ€ He demands, repeating himself.
โ€œIโ€ฆโ€ she struggles for an answer, โ€œwanted him to meet you.โ€ she infuses as much guilt into her words as she can. He should feel bad for the way heโ€™s speaking to her. โ€œI didnโ€™t say anything because I didnโ€™t want to throw you off.โ€ย
It doesnโ€™t work this time, and he refuses to back down, to fawn for her. He doesnโ€™t buy it for a second.
โ€œSo you waited until I was suspended, mid air over a basketball hoop, for me to see you allโ€ฆ cozied up together? You didnโ€™t think - not for one second - that might be just a little upsetting to me?!โ€ย
โ€œRicky-โ€
โ€œAnd what about dad, huh? How do you think he feels watching you feel each other up right in front of him?โ€ tears brim in the corners of his eyes as everything heโ€™s been suppressing all night, all these weeks and months finally breaks the surface. She lets out an indignant scoff and tries to say something, but he ignores her and keeps going. Itโ€™s an avalanche now, and he couldnโ€™t stop even if he wanted to.ย
โ€œHe didnโ€™t leave the couch for a week after you left!โ€ he roars, remembering how hard it was to see his dad like that, to have to be the one to drag him out of it.ย
โ€œ...I didnโ€™t know that-โ€
โ€œHow could you?!โ€ he laughs bitterly, "You weren't there!" He screams. He doesn't think it's ever felt better to say something than it does now. "You weren't there the whole time I was rehearsing, you weren't the one running lines and going over blocking, and teaching me how to listen for cues and do stage makeup and quick change! You weren't there for any of the work that went into this, and you just waltz in here with the newest guy you're screwing to your fucking son's musical like you've been here the whole time, but you havent!" He's never yelled at her like this, but a part of him thinks after how much she hurt him - and his dad - it's long overdue. "You don't get to enjoy this show, and you don't get to be around me, or dad, or anything we do because you walked out!"
"You are way out of line-" she starts, voice cracking.ย
"No, you know whatโ€™s way out of line?" He demands, all too ready to throw her words back in her face. "Breaking my heart, breaking dadโ€™s heart, then acting like everything is fine when itโ€™s not!"
"You think I wanted to leave you?!" She screams back at him.ย
"Yeah," he answers quickly, "I do, because you did! And you know what? I'm glad you left." He spits, watching the pain grow in her eyes, his words like venom.ย
"All you do is hurt us."ย
She blinks like she was just slapped. He takes a step forward, shaking, angry tears silently spilling from his eyes. When he speaks, his voice is low and dead serious.ย
"Don't call me anymore."
Before she can say anything, he starts to walk away. She calls out to him, desperate to get the last word in, to make him know how much pain his words have caused her.ย
"You are really hurting me, Ricky." She says, voice shaking as she cries, "you're breaking your mother's heart."
The sound of his mother crying like that because of something he said should have wrecked him, but he pushes away any last remaining scraps of guilt his rage hasn't burned away yet. He turns back to her, no love in his eyes, and laughs bitterly.
"Yeah, I guess it runs in the family. You know, the one thing I got from you is the ability to ruin any relationship I have, so thanks for that, mom." He spits, turning to leave. She takes a step forward.ย
"Donโ€™t you walk away from me-"
"Like mother like son, huh?" He barks. With that, he's gone. He doesn't stick around for any more of her manipulation or guilt tactics. He just really, really needs to see you right now.

Let me just say that your writing is absolutely immaculate and it should be praised 24/7. You're amazing!!! The way you've managed to write the characters to the point where I'm like "damn this could be canon" and it makes everything so much more easier to picture too.
I honestly feel so sorry for her (the reader) especially when she achieved something so great, in record time, and was at an all time high only for her to be hit by a wave of reality when she realised she was all alone and no one was there to see her do it. It was very realistic, I'm sure many of us have experienced that feeling before, of doing something we finally deem as amazing only to have no one there to celebrate such an achievement and it really had me hurting for her ๐Ÿ˜ญ.
Now let's talk about how she did not want her father to see her injury, not because she didn't want to worry him but because she didn't want him to get angry at her which is so telling of how jake has been treating her ๐Ÿ˜ข honestly her bleeding out in front of him is the cruel punch in the face that Jake ๐Ÿ–•๐Ÿป๐Ÿค ๐Ÿ–•๐Ÿป deserves. The fact that she thought he was mad when he told her to be quiet but really it would've been to just save her energy so she could stay awake and that being the last thing she heard???? yeah im crying from the pain!
I absolutely love her relationship with her mum, it's so heartwarming to think about but also so harsh on Neytiri, not only was her child dying out in her arms but she missed out on a rite of passage the whole family should've been there for. Considering we know Neytiri is very traditional that must hurt really bad to have missed out on such a big ceremony. (AND I JUST READ YOUR RECENT POST HER SPREADING THE BLOOD LIKE THE PAINT IS SO MORBID I LOVE IT)
Now the relationships between the siblings....honestly i have mixed feelings but it's like good mixed feelings โœŒ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ˜ญ neteyam is a sweetheart and it makes so much sense that they understand one another, being the oldest. The way he panicked when he couldn't find his sister ๐Ÿ˜” there's so much pressure on him too and it just feels good knowing they have each other. I'm honestly really interested in the relationship between the siblings, especially lo'ak and the reader. Because they are literally the same, other than the fact that lo'ak knows when to go quiet ๐Ÿ˜ถโ€๐ŸŒซ๏ธ you'd think they'd bond over that but instead he was just taking the piss out of her and excited for whatever punishment was heading her way. And she did get punished to the point where she's dying. Idk I'm just so interested in the sibling dynamics, I think you did mention a few times that she usually cuts in whenever her siblings are getting scolded at (probably lo'ak lmao) which is so sweet to think about. How she doesn't want her siblings going through what she has to. The difference in treatment especially for her, compared to Kiri and Tuk, I'd be seething ๐ŸฅŠ๐Ÿคก because that is so shady. Even if she had a small amount of resentment towards them I honestly couldn't fault her because you can't help it when you see that difference.
Honestly I love this family that you've built. And I'm so interested in seeing how/if this conflict will resolve. Please don't let it be resolved within a paragraph ๐Ÿ˜ง the daddy issues are too strong to be resolved with something simple.
IM AWAITING THE EVENTUAL "I SEE YOU" THATS GONNA HURT IK IT BUT ITS WHAT SHE DESERVES!!!! Imagine him being like "I see you, sweetheart" (cue my immediate sobs)
Also I am so sorry idk how this went on for so long but like whewww sorry if this got boring. Thank you for this amazing fic!!! I can't wait for pt.4!!
- Nini โœŒ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿคก
NINIIIII WELCOME BACK!!! THE LENGTH OF THIS ASK YUHHH ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿฅบ
So you think the characters are close to canon? you can picture them actually acting this way? I have passed the trial of "my blorbo would never say this [clicks out of page]" ?
Tumblr media
thank you..... thank you.............. never a bigger compliment than that.... ah.....
AND I GET BROWNIE POINTS FOR THE IKNIMAYA SCENE BEING REALISTIC? Damn ur spoiling me today!!!! It's such a heart-sinking sensation, really. to be alone in a moment you've looked so forward to all your life, expecting the pride of your family and finally having your moment - but in the end you're on your own, and you've chosen it to be that way because you want to prove yourself & are trying to achieve that high you've always imagined knowing it won't be like that. Idk i have a lot of feelings about that ๐Ÿคธ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ•ณ
AND YEAH!!!!! Jake totally told her to be quiet to conserve her energy but he couldn't relay it to her . in his head he's focused on how much she's bleeding and if it's the liver or the spleen and no na'vi biology is different and how long has she been bleeding and it's all a chaos cluster that he cant hang on to any solid thought. its gonna sink in later for him, god. you guys might get bored from the thought process parts but i love writing them ๐Ÿ˜ญ
also nini, are you british or anywhere related by any chance? "mum" ๐Ÿคจ๐Ÿคจ
BUT, ABOUT NEYTIRI....... she has me in my feels,, like, this is happening because reader went out for her iknimaya BEING TAUNTED BY JAKE . she bled out BECAUSE SHE DIDNT WANT TO TELL JAKE. She told him to fix this every single time and he didnt, thinking it wasnt urgent and physically protecting his family had to come first, to him, he has to keep them alive first and they can handle whatever come their way together. and now this incident has proven how wrong that mindset was. as her mother, neytiri is beyond wrathful, but as his mate, she is disappointed and miserable. not only has she missed her child's most important moment she wanted to put in her songcord she may lose her for it. she has had enough ๐Ÿ˜ญ and the blood paint is going to be so OOF....
NOW ONTO THE SIBLING DYNAMICS! ABt lo'ak and reader,, like, lo'ak can be a cheeky bitch because they're so close, you know? they havent emotionally bonded as neteyam and reader did because lo'ak would play it off whenever feelings are involved at that stage in life but he likes his sister bc she knowingly wants to take all the fire directed towards him bc she wants to throw hands with her father ๐Ÿ˜ญ he's like ur generic younger brother you fight over your belongings a lot, but he's also like jake, he'll do something in the fic that im looking forward to see you guys react to! ๐Ÿค
and dont worry, in this house we like angst, you know i'm not gonna let you guys off easy LMAOOOOOO THAT I SEE YOU SCENE IS GOING TO BE ๐Ÿ˜™๐Ÿค๐Ÿป
AND NO, THANK YOU FOR THE ASK, have an amazing day!

why do you think maddox started talking to madison again in 3x07? like, we know why-why, but within the context of your snippets, what do you think was her thought process
Maddox stared at her phone, trying to decide what to type. Madison sent her a text reminding her of a date they'd set up for this weekend, but Maddox doesn't remember planning this one....
.....but then Maddie doesn't exactly have the best track record for a reliable memory or understanding of things.....
"Hey Gadget! Why don't you and I go raid the pantry for some ice cream?" Madison said as she approached Maddox and nudged her.
"Oh! Hi Mad! Actually I'm supposed to go over setting movements with Val today. But we can go after dinner!" Maddox said after regaining her balance.
Madison's face fell, before a pitying look came over her expression, confusing Maddox.
"What?" She asked as Madison pulled her under her arm, pressing a kiss to her cheek.
"you don't remember Val saying she couldn't do it tonight? Maddie, she said it this morning..."
"Wait, what? I don't...."
"hey, hey it's fine. You remembered, that's all that matters....let's get some ice cream, strawberry?"
"oh I like strawberry!" Maddox smiled as she relaxed into her girlfriend's hold.
.
.
.
.
"Maddox! Are you alright? You missed our meeting last night?" Val asked as she walked by at breakfast.
"Gadget, I asked if you had something" and Madison looked so worried, but Maddox didn't remember that, but Madison wouldn't lie to her, if anything she was brutally honest.
"...I....I'm so sorry I must have forgot...."
"hey, no worries, we have plenty of time still" Val's voice was gentle and genuine, like always.
"Maddox! Come sit with us!" Crash waved from where him, EJ, Val, and the new girl, Nini were sitting.
"Sure--"
"actually, me and Gadget were gonna eat by the trees today"
"we were?"
"Maddox, you said this last night. Girl you're lucky you're cute, cause your memory is not it..."
The group at the table looked between the two girls worriedly, which is fair, it's not everyday you see your friend lose her fucking mind.....
"Did someone call?" Maddox said as she exited the bathroom, towel in one hand drying the ends of her hair.
Madison smiles and lifts one arm for Maddox to curl under. "Nope, all quiet"
"oh, did you get a call?"
"no"
"I thought I heard you talking to someone out here is all" Maddox said as she grabbed her phone and checked for messages.
"careful, we don't want to add hearing things to your list of 'oddities'"
"ha......yeah for sure...."
Maddox shook her head and typed a quick reply, pretending she didn't forget. At least she won't scare off Madison with her feelings and ruin everything....
Now, back to set design, she's got like 2 weeks and 300 pages to build......

summary: the one where ej and andy reunite after years when they're cast as love interests, finally rekindling their friendship and maybe getting something else out of it as well

Tumblr media
Ashlyn and Andy walked into the room, laughing about something, when they saw EJ sitting in the seat with Rickys outfit on.
"What have you done to Ricky?" Ashlyn questioned, knowing that this couldn't end well.
"I didn't do anything, he asked me to fill in," he explained, turning back to his lines and reading over them.
"So it's true, you're actually going on as Troy," Ashlyn said. They had heard rumours but now it had been confirmed.
It was strange. This was everything that EJ had wanted but as he stood here, he wasn't sure if he wanted it anymore. He had other priorities
"Well, I guess a certain part of me wants to say congratulations," she said and he sighed, standing up.
"Well, I guess a certain part of me wants to throw up," he explained and Andy chuckled.
"Wait," Ashlyn said, realising something, "If you're playing Troy, then who's playing Chad?"
Carlos walked onto the room, wearing EJs outfit which was was too big for him, "Buckle up Wildcats, you ready bro,"
"Pray for me," Carlos whispered to the girls before he followed EJ out of the room.
Andy went on stage, continuing to act alongside Nini. She waited backstage, watching EJ and Nini afterwards as she acted awkwardly.
Nini rushed out, staring at her confused, "Why the hell is EJ out there?" She asked.
"Ricky rushed off, something happened. I was about to go but-" Andy started to explain, trying to stay quiet.
"-I get it, I'll go," Nini said, flashing her a smile before walking out to find him.
When Nini rushed out, Andy watched the rest of the scenes before they continued the show.
She watched as EJ and Nini started to perform Breaking Free. He looked back as Ricky walked into the room.
But then he looked over at Andy, knowing that this was his moment to redeem himself. He didn't care about the role, just her.
"What are you doing?" Nini asked as EJ started to go off of his lines.
"Something right, I'm gonna play to lose. I'm not the Troy you want," he said before walking off to Andy.
Ricky came on stage and the two rekindled their relationship. She looked at EJ, a smile on her face.
"You did good out there," she said, smiling at him and he nodded his head.
"I hope I have," he said, wrapping an arm around her shoulders as they turned away, walking through the corridors.
Her heart fluttered a bit as she realised this was what she had always wanted and yet it was so far away.
They walked round, meeting Gina as they watched Ricky and Nini perform on stage.
"Thank you, both of you. For the plane ticket," she said, smiling at the two.
"It just didn't seem fair for you to miss all this," EJ explained, the three of them watching the show.

At the end, they walked out performing the last song - We're all in this together.
They held hands, taking their bows before starting continuing their dance, smiles on their faces as they performed.
Nini rushed off stage, grabbing a tray whilst Gina ushered Carlos and Miss Jenn onto the stage.
"You know what to say," Nini said and Miss Jenn smiled as she was passed the tray.
"Is that the last apple?" She asked, a huge smile on her face as they all took the final bow, holding hands.
Once it ended, they all hugged before EJ grabbed Andy, pulling her in for the biggest hug of them all.
"Thank you, for everything," he said and she smiled at him, she thought they were sharing a moment but then he just pulled away, walking off to hug someone else.
He had saved her in this semester. She had taught him how to be a better person, the best version of himself and it was all for her.
Andy still smiled though, cheering along with Gina before she waved to her family in the audience.
They all stood in the lobby, talking to each other after the performance. Andy and EJ were standing together when Andys mum Sophie ran up to her.
"My little babys a star, that was amazing,' she said and Andy laughed, her mum walking back.
She looked at her family, her uncle, brother and sisters standing nearby.
"And you too EJ," Sophie said, hugging EJ who looked shocked at the action, "You were amazing as well,"
"Thanks Mrs Kennedy, I really appreciate it," he said and her mum just grinned from ear to ear.
The rest of her family congratulated her and EJ, his family hadn't turned up so Andys mum just adopted him for the night.
A little bit later, Andy was talking to Ashlyn who announced that it was Big Red who had delivered those flowers and that they were for her.
"And guess who's moving in," Ashlyn said before pulling Gina over, "Gina, meet my new roomie,"
The girls talked and EJ watched from the sidelines, starting to realise his crush on the girl.
James and Tommy must have noticed because they walked over, standing either side of him.
"If you hurt her, I will kill you, and we will get away for it because Sophie is a detective," James said.
"What?" EJ asked, looking away from Andy and looking at the ambush that had occurred.
"Its obvious the way you look at her, you like my little sister," Tommy said with a glare.
"Pfft, no, no, Andy, she's like my best friend, 'course not," EJ deflected, stumbling over his words.
"If you want to date her, be a good man, no sex, be polite, no pda, no making out, don't be a dick," Tommy stated, narrowing his eyes at EJ.
"Okay," EJ said before walking off, laughing about the situation before Andy suddenly walked over.
"Come on EJ, we're going to Dennys, we don't want to be late," she said, grabbing his hand and pulling him towards the door.
EJ looked over his shoulder and saw Tommy and James glaring at him.
"Bye guys, EJ will probably drive us home so I'll see you some time tonight, or tomorrow morning," Andy said, still feeling the high of the show.
"Hes not a bad guy," James said, still glaring at EJ as his laughing niece dragged him out of the hall.
James smiled, after Andys dad had died, he moved in with his sister, knowing that the family needed someone else there.
She had only been eleven years old and he could remember the way she sobbed when she found out her dad had died, it was something that would follow him to his grave.
He was just glad that she had found someone like EJ who made her smile again, who cared about her. That's all her dad would have wanted.

hsmtmts s4 spoilers ahead!
so i actually liked hsmtmts season 4. and i never expected to be saying that. from the trailers, i was worried the high school musical 4 plotline would take over and make the story too crowded. i thought they would focus too much on new characters. i had my problems with how portwell was handled and how EJ's plotline was handled in season 3. i was scared they would turn EJ into this guy who peaked in high school. i thought half of the theatre kids would be missing.
but i've never been happier to be wrong. yes, it took me a second to warm up to this season (though I'm looking forward to rewatching it and seeing how these thoughts change) and some choices felt especially out of pocket, and i still have problems with things, but this was still. so good. it honoured the heart of the early seasons and each character was given so much love. i'm so happy EJ Caswell my love was still a part of the show and got to sing and have his moments and story. i'm not super happy with how much of it was more for ricky's benefit and i still think he deserved so much better but i like them being friends. i like where he ended up with gina.
I am so proud of each of these characters and how much they have grown. I'm especially proud of how much Gina and Ricky have matured and how much they've learned from their past relationships
this season brought me the things i said i needed for me to support ricky and gina. yes portwell will forever have my heart and i will read fanfiction about a world where they got together and dream about what should have been but I'm also learning to be okay with the way things went this season. they were respectful of ej and gina as characters (other than taking risotto away what was that >:0), had them communicating and in such a healthy way and gina apologizing, and it felt so much kinder than last season. and the show acknowledged how it's always gina having to go first and put in the work and they had ricky change that! ricky really did show up and not gonna lie that love confession scene at the end got me it was good. they're not going to be my favourite ship ever by any means but that's okay. i can understand why other people love them and i just hope we can all be friends bc there are so many good ships in this fandom lol so we can all calm down and stop bullying each other thanks <3 (seriously the way none of these ships are problematic but people will be saying the rudest stuff if you mention a ship they don't like. like the number of posts i keep seeing calling people stupid and lacking in media literacy for having a different opinion is just so unnecessary)
and i was so happy for gina in this season! having her moment, showing so much strength and growth she was just everything and i love her so much.
i like that hsm 3 had its moment. and i am so so so happy all of the family was back (other than nini I'm sad she couldn't be there but i also didn't think she would be unfortunately). the highlight of everything for me was really gina's goodbye speech to everyone. it was so beautiful it felt like a love letter to every character on the show and i appreciated that so much.
so even though it was messy and imperfect and i love seasons 1 and 2 much much more, this season was so strongly found family and it's the found family i love and I'm happy with the ending. it had me sobbing because these characters (and the interactions I've had with people in the fandom) have meant so much to me. i started this show as a senior in high school and now I'm going into my senior year of college and this show with its found family of theatre kids and the soundtrack have been a huge comfort for me and I'm just happy it ended in a place i could appreciate (especially because i didn't think i would be saying any of this after season 3).
so for every moment of heartbreak this show caused me, I'm still happy knowing it ended with these theatre kids laughing and singing in a limo driving to denny's. maybe i would change some things along the way, but that was the perfect ending.

what are your thoughts on the hsmtmts finale? I found it to be so disappointing :/
oh, I have so many thoughts.
first, let me preface this by saying I'm both a Portwell and a Rina. I really liked Rina's dynamic in season 1 when they first introduced it and I was here for it until they threw in Portwell. And then the narrative kind of told me Gina isn't Ricky's number one choice/priority but she is EJ's number one priority, andshe wasn't even a choice to him! She was the only person he was even thinking about at the point. I ate that shit up. They were so cute together and their relationship was built on such a great friendship. But I did also like seeing Ricky pining over Gina and realizing his feelings for her...I just hated that they couldn't just let him wrestle with his feelings for a while, he had to put EJ and Gina's relationship down (and he was kinda weird/rude to EJ at times in order to push the narrative of Rina...idk some quiet, semi-secret pining would've been nice to see). also just in case it isn't already clear...I am an EJ girl first and foremost. Idk why but I just liked him so much from the start of the 1st season for some reason. I also adore Ricky, but he drives me crazy sometimes tbh.
in no particular order, here are my thoughts on the finale:
I'm still in shock that Ricky said "I haven't read the full script yet" on the day of opening night of the show. was that supposed to be funny? cute or something? Why was Gina not mad at all about that? It's also kinda hypocritical of Ricky bc he was telling Jet at the beginning that he needed to practice his lines and show up and be a good Hans for Gina since it's her first lead role and I'm supposed to believe the same Ricky (who is apparently in love with Gina) didn't take the time to read the whole script and at least learn the name of the kingdom for her? Did he never run lines with her or anyone for that matter, have a conversation with anyone about the show, or even show up at rehearsals? I mean I'm pretty sure they would've said Arendelle plenty of times during rehearsals, so I feel like he should've known that.I know it was a small scene but seriously? Is this supposed to make me like Ricky? The narrative is confusing me.
I am so happy Miss Jenn was there! The kids needed her support and it just wouldn't be a finale opening night without her there. I kinda wish Mr Mazzara had shown up too but it's fine, I'm not gonna die on that hill. I thought Miss Jenn would talk to EJ, give him advice and stuff and then tell him what a good job he did at the end but unless I'm crazy or accidentally missed something...she didn't really do that. she was too focused on Nini and forgot about her tallest child
I thought it was a really nice send off for Nini, and I liked that she brought the lottery ticket for Ricky, it was a sweet little reminder of their friendship and how they've grown up together and of their relationship, and it also showed that they've let each other go. Although Ricky did look kinda shook when he heard Nini was there and was really upset over the idea that he didn't get a card from her...but I guess it might've been more bc of their friendship than the romance part. It did make me stop to wonder though, is he truly 100% over her (which I had been certain he was until that moment)
not gonna lie, I'm kind of sad that we didn't get to see any of Jet as Hans. I was actually kind of excited to see that and idk why, so I felt a little let down by that. I mean, we got to see Kourtney's Let It Go moment (which I loved and she sounded so good) and Carlos singing In Summer, which Frankie Rodriguez absolutely nailed and I loved it. But it would've been really interesting to include the Hans/Anna "if only there was somebody who loved you" scene.
loved the conversation between Big Red and Ashlyn. I realized she was feeling awkward bc she was trying to figure out how to tell him about her summer of discovery but for a full minute I was really confused and thinking she was wanting to break up with him/not feeling it with him cause the dialogue was a little confusing and I was like is this for real??? But then Big Red made his little "you're the one for me" confession and they were both happy so phew not a break up. Also, I love that this storyline showed ppl the concept that you can have a crush but that doesn't mean you don't still love your SO/doesn't take away from your feelings for your SO. not sure why they seemed to forget about this as it could've applied to the Portwell/Rina triangle but okay...
I had so much hope built up for a moment where EJ would get to sing his own emotional ballad, fall apart a little and have a moment, even if it was by himself, like the other characters have gotten and I don't know why I ever thought the writers would think to do that...but yeah I kept hoping for it anyway...when he started to walk away from the group huddle right before Everyday I thought he was gonna burst into a banger of a song as he walked away and then Corbin Bleu started singing and I was like oh, okay I guess we're ignoring EJ's feelings. Also the fact that he was so done he was just going to straight up walk away and no one was like "EJ where are you going?" "come back" "we're proud of you EJ" "how about a round of applause for our director" or "EJ are you okay? you look like you're going through it"
I loved the scene where EJ called his dad, I was starting to think they were just ignoring/had forgotten about that plotline so I was glad to see it given its moment. Matt Cornett did SO good in that scene...the emotion was unmatched and I was tearing up. I liked that Val was there and he wasn't having to deal with it alone, but at the same time...where were his friends? Did none of them notice his dad wasn't there? Gina even asked him about his dad whether he was worried about that and she didn't think to check back in with him about it? Also just the fact that he basically said he only felt comfortable having Val there with him...so he had to squeeze in the phone call during the show so she could be with him and didn't feel like any of his close friends from school would provide the support he needed in that moment? Not Gina, not his so-called "brother", not his fucking actual cousin, not a single one of his best friends that he brought to camp to spend time with???? I hated that the show just...jumped over that with no moment for EJ to tell everyone how they've made him feel. He just had to sit there and put on a brave and happy face for them while he was crumbling. And then the fact that his dad straight up hung up on him??? I knew his dad was a douche canoe but damn. That was harsh. It was really nice to see that little moment between him and Val afterwards, where she just kinda held him and he cried a little. It's pretty brutal though that after that, he had to go back to the show, put his Sven costume back on, and go back on stage AND he did it all without having an emotional breakdown. I really thought he was just going to either straight up not go back to the show at that point (although it makes sense, as a final fuck you to Cash, that he went back and finished what he started extremely well and didn't let his dad see that he had really gotten to him).
Corbin Bleu saying "what team?" really made my HSM loving heart happy and 4th grade me was shaking in her boots. I also kinda love the Corbin Bleu redemption arc (even though it's clearly only bc he's going to be in s4 in a more positive capacity). Although I do find it hard to believe that Corbin kicked Channing out, and likely the entire situation was explained to Disney/the doc producers yet they still allowed Channing to edit the documentary??? Also on this topic- am I really to believe they edited, cut, and produced an entire show in 1 month???????
Kristoff Lullaby...at first I liked it, the way they began it with Ricky singing the words but EJ and Gina sharing meaningful stares from opposite sides of the stage. It started out as such a nice reminder of the very real feelings still lingering between them (despite Ricky being between them and everything that means for them), of the fact that EJ didn't want to break up, and it kind of took me back to the cute friendship they had that they built their relationship on, despite EJ obviously noticing the tension and feelings between Ricky and Gina...and then Ricky had to make eye contact with Gina at the end, and EJ's heartbroken face...he was already sad enough as it is. maybe that look was part of the show? bc in that specific scene in the musical, Kristoff (Ricky) is singing to Anna (Gina)...so maybe that was just choreography and we are all interpreting this incorrectly. I kind of wished they hadn't done that with that song...I was hoping it would be more about Gina and EJ and they would realize they need to have a convo and then talk about things, like how even though they love and care about each other very much they're better off as friends and she should've been honest with him about Ricky, just a simple "I'm really sorry for doing this to you, you don't deserve it...I've been struggling with my feelings for Ricky for a while now and I thought I was over it, I thought you were my person...but now I think you're better off without me, I'm just going to continue breaking your heart because I don't know what I want anymore and I really need to figure that out first before I involve someone else's heart" period. If I was writing this show, I would have added a moment like that for them, so that Rina getting together at the end wouldn't feel so weird and abrupt. Also bc she and EJ never actually got closure (as evidenced by what EJ said/how he reacted in that final scene).
that whole This Is Me moment was kinda weird? I would have liked it more if the entire cast was singing together but it ended up being the little girl's solo with the cast doing back up and it was sort of just a weird sequence. I'm also just salty that they gave the little girl a song and not EJ. What a huge missed opportunity bc they could've written a really amazing ballad for him about being alone (although you're surrounded by ppl/your friends) and about breaking up with Gina, feeling like a failure in your dad's eyes and never living up to anyone's expectations of you, something like "All I wanted was to be good enough for you" or "what do I have to do to be good enough for you?" or "I broke my heart and tore myself apart/trying to make you happy/I destroyed myself for you/burned my house down to keep you warm/now I'm cold and alone/is that good enough for you?" or all of the above building up to an ending of "I'll never be good enough for you/but I tried everything/yeah, I was the best man I know how to be/and that's good enough for me". A golden opportunity and potential completely wasted. I'm so mad. Also, EJ bursting into "When There Was Me And You" would have also slapped (either they should have paused the Kristoff Lullaby scene had him sing it at that point, or the final scene should have been EJ singing it . They really flushed so much potential down the toilet.
Honestly every single song from HSM2 went to waste this season, they could have thrown ALL of them in- Work This Out in the first episode when they all arrived at camp and hated how rustic it is...and can you imagine EJ and Ricky singing I Don't Dance at some point? would have been hilarious. And Gotta Go My Own Way? Would have been PERFECT. Not mention EJ singing Bet On It and getting the angry dance sequence. Soooo many wasted opportunities.
Why did EJ have to do to curtain call in the Sven costume? I thought as the director he'd get to pop after curtain call separately and get separate applause/recognition. Literally every musical and play I've ever been to has had a moment after the cast does their bows where the cast makes sure the director (and tech ppl/crew, and orchestra if there is one) get their own applause from the audience at the end...it's theater etiquette. It's just weird that that didn't happen for EJ, after the big deal they made out of him directing the show. And then literally no one told him "good job" or anything like that, never mind "I'm proud of you"...they were all focused on the actors and congratulating them...and I know they had no way to know what happened with his dad, but I just thought since they all know he's spent the last 2 weeks putting all of his time, effort, and focus into it (and they know about the letter from his dad) that they'd be like "no matter what your dad thinks, we're proud of you" (Gina should have said that!). He didn't even get flowers or any other director thank you gift...just nothing. No one was proud of EJ, no director applause moment or appreciation of any type and I just thought that was messed up. Especially because you know he was already sad knowing he had graduated and they're all going to have a year of school going on without him...and he basically got a preview at camp that they can and will go on without him without even really missing him (and Ricky essentially replaced him). He basically got told by everyone, including his own father that they don't really care about him (not literally just looking at it from his pov). It was just really sad to see and I don't even know what the point of it was? Like what is his storyline from here and what was his storyline from this season supposed to be if it lead up to THAT? He just wants to matter and be important to someone! And it probably doesn't even have to be romantic at this point!
Lastly, the final scene...I found it (and the finale in general) kind of underwhelming? The premiere red carpet thing was weird and it felt like a dream sequence or something, and then from there we jumped into them watching the premiere trailer thing which they all had to know was a load of fake bullshit. I want to know what happened in that one month bc EJ still seemed really angry and upset about Gina, and he was kind of surprised-but-not-surprised by what was revealed about R*na in the trailer. Were they trying to reconcile their friendship or something? Because the look on his face of betrayal and hurt was so sad. I wanted to like the R*na scene, I really did...but it just felt cheap and flat and didn't have the power I wanted their first kiss to have. And the speech she gave....what. the. fuck. So she's been in love with Ricky the whole time (and apparently knew it) which in itself implies she didn't really have those type of feelings for EJ, but then add to that the "you're not a maybe to me" I could not take it seriously after she said that. I think what she meant to say to EJ was "you're a maybe to me, so I'm making up excuses to break up with you". First you have the audacity to piggyback off something EJ said to confess your feelings to Ricky, and then you're gonna say that to him? Was EJ still within earshot? It just felt like Ricky and Gina were putting EJ down (and for what??? it was unnecessary). Also why did I sit through 8 episodes of Ricky freaking out about telling Gina his feelings, being scared to do it, and all the drama about that convo between him and Carlos and him dead set on telling her before the documentary aired for him to NEVER TELL HER his feelings??????
Also remember when we were all arguing about whether it was okay for Ricky to *fake* slap EJ, even if he "deserved it" or whatever? Well I'm glad they let EJ answer that argument for us. He is the bigger person and took the high road, even though no one would have blamed him if he did. I do not know why he called Ricky his "brother" though? Like some brother you've got there. Worse than Conrad and Jeremiah Fisher. Also it just makes everything they did to EJ worse bc camp and the theater are both his second homes (bc his dad sucks) and he frequently refers to the Wildcats as his family, but his "family" doesn't seem to give a shit about him.
Overall, but especially the ending, it all felt weirdly out of character and overly dramatic and like over the top...I know it's always been over the top and dramatic but this felt off and different than usual. It felt like a weird fever dream. I am convinced they were still acting dramatic for the documentary and at the start of next season it will be revealed (Corbin even said they were showing them the trailer before the premiere thing started and people came in to "get their reactions". which makes me believe they were being filmed and they knew it). Idk I just don't know anymore. I do love the concept of season 4 though so I'll probably watch it just for the HSM cast and nostalgia. And also I'm already this invested might as well finish lol
