Summary:
Journey to the West, one of the four great Chinese classical novels, has taken on a completely different look in the hands of the Japanese manga master Osamu Tezuka. Sun Wukong, who was born from a stone, once dominated the world and made a living by cutting people on the streets. Later, he was imprisoned by the evil king and met Little Draong Girl. After that, he became a disciple of Draong Immortal, and not only learned 72 transformations, but also got the precious Ruyi Jingu Bang. Sun Wukong, who had greatly increased his abilities, gathered in the mountains and forests, robbed the rich and helped the poor, and even alarmed the heavens, causing a series of good dramas in the heavens. In the end, he was suppressed under the Five Fingers Mountain by the Buddha because he overestimated his own abilities. With the help of the timid Tang Monk, Sun Wukong regained his freedom. Later, they met Zhu Bajie, who was wearing a suit and a bow tie, and Sha Wujing, who loved money and dug for treasures everywhere. The master and his disciples thus embarked on a dangerous and fun adventure to the West...

I have some little tidbits to share about Cutie Honey episode 20: “The Forgotten Legendary City." Check it out below!
Screenwriter: Susumu Takaku
Art Director: Eiji Ito
Animation Director: Kazuo Komatsubara
Director: Hiroshi Shidara
Tumblr media
This episode is centered around Honey and the Hayami family locating the lost continent of Mu. Augustus Le Plongeon introduced his idea of Mu after investigations of the Maya ruins in Yucatán. You can read more about it here.
This episode also mentions a place called New Dolema Island (ニュードレマ島) which I'm assuming is a play on New Caledonia (ニューカレドニア).
Tumblr media
According to the 1974 January issue of TV Magazine, Honey really loves anmitsu and chocolate.
Anmitsu is a traditional Japanese cold jelly dessert, topped with fruits, dango, bean paste, ice cream and a dark colored syrup. Considering how much Honey enjoys chocolate, it’s not surprising she would be carrying around a bar of it during her travels. That being said, she shouldn’t have given chocolate to those baby monkeys. It’s not good for them!
Tumblr media
The design for Crocodile Claw appears to be inspired by Ogon Bat. Ogon Bat was a superhero created by Suzuki Ichiro and Takeo Nagamatsu back in the 1930’s. This Japanese superhero made his debut in kamishibai, a type of street storytelling, in which a narrator tells a story with occupying images. Despite being a superhero, Ogon Bat evokes a very ghoulish appearance with his skull-like face and a Dracula-like cloak.
Tumblr media
Honey transforms herself into a female version of Tarzan, known as Onna Tarzan or “Lady Tarzan.” Eiko Masuyama even does her own imitation of Johnny Weissmuller’s famous “Tarzan yell.”
Go Nagai has included female versions of Tarzan in a few of his works, including his extremely raunchy manga, Kekko Kamen.
Tumblr media
There are at least two different versions of this episode: one where the Cutie Honey logo appears during a scene transition (after the Hayami guys ogle Honey in her Tarzan outfit) and one where it doesn't. The logo-less version has appeared on early home video releases and even the French dub. The version with the logo appears on the 2004 DVD remaster.

VIOLENCE JACK: EVIL TOWN (1988)
Tumblr media
Rod Serling steps into view, looking just a little more rundown than usual. "Picture of a man," he starts, "a man so violent they named him Violence Jack. Now, picture if you will, a town so vile they named it Hell Town. A subterranean town of debauchery and dastardly deeds. A town that would go on to inspire an OVA so evil it would take on the moniker of... EVIL TOWN."
He takes one final drag of his cigarette, sighing deeply. "That's the signpost you see up ahead. The signpost that signals your entry into… 1988's VIOLENCE JACK: EVIL TOWN." Thinking the crew is no longer rolling film or sound, Serling spikes his smokes on the floor. "This thing is just vile, repulsive even. This Go Nagai fella, well, he's just a nasty little freak!"
In the world of post-apocalyptic media, you have everything from shows and movies about zombies to funky little Italian dune buggies. Dwindling resources. Familial bonds put to the test along endless stretches of barren asphalt. And then you have one of the best sub-genres: Inexplicably Big Dudes. Like Fist of the North Star, Go Nagai's Violence Jack manga fits right into that mold. Unlike Kenshiro and co., though, Jack is willing to explore every dirty little nook and cranny of what our bleak future has to offer.
Folks, it ain't pretty.
Tumblr media
Deep in the depths of the appropriately named Evil Town, a small group of survivors crack open a wall to find the colossal Violence Jack just kind of standing there. Apparently he's been standing inside this wall for six months? When they let him out he's just kind of like, "thanks." From there we transition into a battle between Evil Town's A, B and C Zones, each with their own unique brand of denizens, with Jack ultimately playing a pivotal role in who lives and who gets torn to shreds.
At first Jack partners up with the Zone A folks, promising to help them take on the slice of beef known as Mad Saurus, who hails from the extra loathsome B Zone. Before long, though, he finds himself teaming up with the women of C Zone, who are almost all fashion models—with a couple wrestlers thrown in for good measure—since they were heading to a fashion show in Kyoto when disaster struck. How convenient! Jack is tasked with protecting them from the brutes and rapists of both A and B Zones, so either way you slice it this is destined to culminate in a Big Dude versus Big Dude Beefdown.
Over the course of roughly one hour, kids die horrible deaths, women are savaged in the most unpleasant of ways, there's cannibalism, necrophilia; basically nothing is off limits in the world of Violence Jack, more so here than anywhere else. It's all fairly reprehensible… and the animators at Studio 88 went obscenely hard on it! Director Ichiro Itano—yes, he of the famed style of action sequence that came to be known as the "Itano Circus," featuring incredibly stylized aerial combat and missile volleys—made sure his animators put all their blood, sweat and tears into the blood, sweat and tears on screen. Everything from the extremely gross depictions of sexual assault to Jack's expert knife play, which usually ends up splitting heads in half or sending punks into a somersault of guts, is depicted with the kind of love and care one might put into a sentimental Mother's Day card.
Tumblr media
So yes, VIOLENCE JACK: EVIL TOWN is pretty nasty, and I'm worried I'll be put on a watch list if I don't add that caveat. It still hits just as hard now as it did over 30 years ago, though, shocks and all. If this is our future I'm good with checking out now... but if for a quick, tasteless glimpse. A peek, if you will, into the mind of Go Nagai, who is etched into history as one of the pillars of the manga and anime industries and, as good old Rod Serling famously put it above, a "nasty little freak."

BGM: Bonnie Pink - Lie Lie Lie
It was 36.2℃. Today was a day off. I thought that I would make a white lie as a joke because it was the April fool day, but I could find nothing. The lie as "I'm going to publish my blog from Kadokawa" would let readers down... so I stopped thinking. Going to the library, I borroewd David. J. Charmers' "Reality+" and started reading it for a while. In this book, Charmers starts a discussion about virtual reality. Is this world just a production of imagination? A really thrilling question. Is this world fake?... I don't want to think so. But even if I tried to deny virtual reality is never real, I would accept the fact that the network of social media and also the virtual reality as metaverse support my life. So I can't deny these questions from this book as crap. I found them with a strong interest. Is this world on any simulation? Is there someone looking at our lives from meta level? These are the same question of a Japanese philosopher, Hitoshi Nagai.
After that, I went to Yume Koen and watched Sakura blooming. I couldn't find any free time to enjoy these Sakura flowers, so I made my head blank and tried just to enjoy them. Maybe this can't be an answer to that Charmers' questions, but the Sakura was so real so I say to myself "I can't deny myself who looks at the beautiful real world like this (as Descartes says)". Probably I am too bound strictly by social media. Maybe this sounds banal, but I have to have a leisure in my mind and enable myself to look at such vast and beautiful reality. That would mean that "enjoy the silence" as Depeche Mode sings. Not trying to kill time with listening to music or reading books, but looking at how various events are happening right now in this world. But my brain is so stubborn so I listen to some music in my brain if I watch this kind of beautiful Sakura. Like Brian Eno's ambient music...
It turned afternoon, and I took a nap. I read Koutarou Sawaki's "Poker Face". Through these essays in this book, I thought that Sawaki has an interest in making lies. Lies, in other words making fake or pretending to be someone, saying fake words, making fake fact and replace it to the real one... He wrote in his early essay about a certain temptation of making lies in himself, but he has been one of the greatest non-fiction writes therefore he denied that temptation. He has been trying to write the truth in his various books. But in himself, there must still be the temptation, but he also must know that it would be risky if he lost himself for that temptation. How about me? I am really poor at making any lies (but I won't say that my life has no lie, or I am really honest), so the temptation which talks to me about making lies might be lesser, But making lies to someone might be a pleasure for us ("lies" are the ones those always make "someone" besides us confused and misunderstood about something).
The day turned into the evening, and I found the time to read "Koutarou Sawaki sessions: Experts are speaking". I really enjoyed Sawaki's conversations with the experts from various fields. The experts, who have lived as professional from their world strictly give me a lot of things. Especially, Yoshiharu Habu, who is a great Shogi player, talks about how we should do a waste of effort like Ichiro talks. If there was the conversation between Sawaki and Ichiro, I would read it. After that, suddenly I remembered about the topic of various troubles the words from our mouths provide (In Japanese, this is said as "our mouths are a source of troubles" as an idiom). I have broken a lot of friendly mood because of my careless words, and also I have experienced some flaming on the interet. Especially, this digital era would give us a lot of seeds of troubles which can bloom anytime if we misunderstand the usage of any single word. This blog is also a source of flaming. I can't enjoy any flaming. I just try to post my diary calmly (and that's enough).

Tezuka Osamu Story: I am Son-Goku (1989) 手塚治虫物語 ぼくは孫悟空

Summary:
This is the 12th special animated program for "24-hour Television: Ai wa Chikyu wo Sukuu." The first half of the story is an autobiographical animated piece focused on the episode in which the young boy Tezuka Osamu becomes attracted to the Chinese animated work "Tessen Koshu." Then it uses some episodes from Son-goku to depict how he eventually becomes an animation writer. The latter half is a new science fiction version of Son-goku set against a background of Planet Sapphire in the Galaxy of 3010. This is one of Tezuka Osamu's posthumous works. He unfortunately passed away during the planning stages.
At the world premiere, Takamasa Matsutani, president of Japan's "Tezuka Animation Production Co., Ltd.", accepted an interview with the "International Herald Herald". He revealed a rather touching past incident.
Osamu Tezuka began to create this different Sun Wukong in 1952, and made it into a comic "My Son Goku" and serialized it in a magazine. When creating, Osamu Tezuka also considered using the image of Peking Opera facial makeup, but in the end he making Sun Wukong like a bear perhaps to show the difference. When he died in 1989, he left the draft of the animated film "My Son Goku" in the world. This was also Osamu Tezuka's last animated work.
The indissoluble bond between Osamu Tezuka and Sun Wukong dates back to when he was in middle school. At that time, he watched the cartoon "Princess Iron Fan" produced by the brothers Wan Laiming, the founder of Chinese animation, and made up his mind to make animation his lifelong career. Therefore, there were later cartoons and animated characters such as "Astro Boy" and "Jungle King" that grew up with a generation. It was his comics and animations that saved the Japanese animation industry, which was on the verge of collapse at the time. "My Son Goku" also records the friendship between Osamu Tezuka and Wan Laiming.
Matsutani Takamasa said: "Mr. Wan is the person that Mr. Tezuka respects and admires the most. Many people think that Mr. Tezuka is more influenced by Disney animation. In fact, he was influenced earlier by Chinese animation, especially Mr. Wan's animation, and more profound.” In 1988, Osamu Tezuka came to China and paid a special visit to Wan Laiming, who was already in his seventies. After returning to Japan, Tezuka Osamu completed the draft of his last animated film "My Son Goku" and wrote "This is my Son Goku" on the title page. "After he visited Mr. Wan, he already knew that he would die soon and completed "My Son Goku". Before his death, he used his work to say hello to Mr. Wan and tell Mr. Wan, 'I'm going.'" When he said this, Matsutani Xiaozheng's tone was a little heavy.
In 2003, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Astro Boy's birth, Tezuka released the cartoon "My Son Goku", to which Osamu Tezuka devoted special emotions to.
