Danny gets more animalistic and ghostly in ghost form over time:

I've always loved the joke "from the day we are born we are slowly dying" and since this guy is half dead, he slowly looks more like a ghost when in his ghost form.

As for the animalistic thing. I dont mean legit growling or purring. I mean him having painted ears that move around and pin back when mad. Maybe a tail (tails are fun for expressing emotions). Pupils that dilate and slit. Stuff like that. He just gets more funky with time.

Constantine and Danny actually get along:

They're both tired, magical, and have seen some shit. If they are both adults when meeting they can be drinking buddies or something idk.

If Constantine met Danny as a teen tho i imagine he wouldn't look down on Danny or get too annoyed with him. He would treat him as an equal. He recognises and magic users are different, and Danny has been dealing with the magical bullshit all alone. This kid deserves some respect damn it! Infact it would be funny if the JL interacted with them at the same time and realized they were actually both really similer. Similer facial expressions and exhausted attitudes.

In a dp x dc context. I feel like at first you think he would fit in amoungst the heros. But he's too young to interract with the adult heros, but too experienced and powerful to interact with the younger heros. He struggles to fit in and he has to work through that. That also circles back to the Constantine point. I dont know much about the magic users in dc, but i can image theres a very large veriety of them all ranging in species and age. So maybe he belongs most with them, cuz to them he's just another acultist.

Thinking about an AU where Techno, Wilbur and Tommy are all the harbingers of the actual entire apocalypse and Phil (just some insane guy) decides that those are in fact his kids and starts gaslighting the absolute shit out of them about it.

I just think itd be super fun since Phil in this au is literally just some insane dude. He literally lies about their entire childhood but does it so consistently and so realistically that it throws them off guard.

I also have a few ideas where they start referring to Phil as their dad in the beginning as a sarcastic / mocking thing but accidentally just getting themselves even more adopted as they do it.

Just a mixture of things like that where it starts as calling him it but then accidentally actually giving him parental authority along with that.

I also wanna explore how Kristin and Phils relationship would be like. Maybe her as death being very bemused by this silly human that just decided she was his wife one day.

She literally visits him in dreams and stuff and he just acts as if they're married and have been for years. He complains about their 'rambunctious kids' and how he has to threaten them with her so that they behave sometimes. She finds it so silly and just cant help but play pretend.

Kristin: Hello, human Phil: My love! Its been so long since I've seen you Kristin: We've never met Phil: Oh don't say that! It hasnt been that long. I think that'd be a core part of this AU as well. Everyone is playing pretend but then it just fuzzies and it all becomes real for them. At first its a joke that Phil is her husband and their father but then they get lost in the fantasy and fun of it all and actually accept him as such.

Phil has no ulterior motives either, he's literally just a strange insane man that heard stories about neotrio and started thinking they were his kids one day. He genuinely believes his delusion and they end up accidentally making it a reality.

He just makes lucky guesses and plausible lies often enough that he's still shiny and new, he's still fun to play with and thats what ends up 'tricking' them all.

i genuinely believe the memes are being taken by people in a positive way, in the sense excluding a certain group the majority of people are laughing with him rather than at him. george doesn't seem to publicly mind too much which def helps the way these jokes are perceived. the more neutral f1 fans seem to like that he doesn't take himself too seriously either esp since merc's driver image and in turn george's since he left williams is...well we all know. but the problem is the frequency of these jokes and it does leave a bad taste in my mouth that they have no problem taking advantage of whenever george gets positive attention be it the memes or the hair change but the minute it comes to actually protecting him or their other employees from attacks from ykw then they are silent. it real says a lot.

5: What part was hardest to write?

Nothing immediately comes to mind. There was a sequence of events though which happened differently to how I imagined, and I remember struggling with that at the time. Initially I was going to have Efnisien have the surgery to remove the teste implants at the same time as everything else (the other surgeries), but I knew Temsen wasn't equipped to do that and it would be somewhat hypocritical for him to be angry at Crielle's lack of surgical skills and then attempt a surgery in an area he hasn't been trained in. I also frankly didn't want to write a realistic surgery recovery because that would be lengthy, and Efnisien was still kind of...going through stuff.

Around that time, I realised that there couldn't be any overt sexual activity during Efnisien's first heat, because he just wasn't ready yet. So a few things I sort of imagined happening quite close together had to be spread apart.

The writing wasn't the hard part, it was like...letting go my original image and coming up with the new one. Sometimes I'm stubborn and it's hard for me to realise I have to change something important!

11: What do you like best about this fic?

Being able to explore omegaverse the way I want to, on my terms, without making it nicer, or less complicated, or feeling obligated to give like unrealistically happy endings and veer towards more hopeful endings. I like that it can be as long as I want, and also oh my god you know what I think I love the most? The multi-cameos from so many different stories. This is the first time I've done something like this and I think I'm going to have to do it again. Multiple romances, multiple characters, different stories, and it's like hooooo this is like ultimate AU :D

12: What do you like least about this fic?

It's genuinely hard to come up with something I like least about it. I suppose - and this isn't specific to Underline the Black - the world is quite overwhelming. Like I really wish I could regularly release chapters of Blue, Red and Gold as well, but I...can't. I literally cannot. I'm not multiple people and I'm just one person, and being excited about all of these stories doesn't give me unlimited energy to release on so many stories at the same time.

There's nothing I specifically like least about Underline the Black so far. I don't really want to write stories where it's easy to think of things I like the least within the story. But yeah a broader issue is feeling guilty towards all of you that I can't like... give you more, more often, with more regularity. That part's hard, though no one is doing anything to make me feel that way, I just...want to make things smoother and more enjoyable for others pretty much always. Idk, it's funny isn't it, because I deliver so much angst, but I'm like 'in all other ways I really want this to be an enjoyable, happy process' dsalkfajsd

- image - it reminds me a little of some of the older kpop boy groups that are established enough that they can have visible tattoos, drink on camera, etc without some kind of fuss. it’s the kind of public image that’s fun and thoughtful and also youthful without being cutesy or squeaky clean. yknow? but also the close relationships within the group that the fans know of and have their own relationships with (a thought for another day but:)

- the closeness to fans (this might just be bc i’m used to bands who don’t interact on social media lol. to a degree i’m thinking specifically about a new group zb1, where the members would reply to fans comments on a specific platform, and fan memes on twitter have percolated into group videos- maybe this specific group is apples vs pineapples but idk! when people talk about nace online and they sound quite a bit like how people talked about baekho from nuest, just time adjusted, it gets that pattern recognition)

- fandom behavior (for better and for worse, although this might just be on account of JO fans on social media generally skewing younger and in spaces where some share what other music they listen to, there’s quite a bit of kpop) - in a sense, the way JO fans sound on twitter uses almost the exact same tones as kpop boy group fans. but even if you adjust (favorites of the girls and gays!) hockey fans, bird and bug people, plant people - in most cases, they don’t use the same language unless they’re also kpop fans.

extra note: i keep associating ferrus with magenta? here's an excerpt from a fic i have half-written. (this is from the primarch errant au where ferrus beats fulgrim at isstvan and separates him from the blade of laer; specific context is that fulgrim is wrapped up in a shock blanket telling ferrus about everything that happened leading up to isstvan). roll quote:

the meaning behind this one is like. ok. the poem is exalting the miraculous advances of modern science in the eyes of a medieval alchemist and obviously there is the immediate layer in this drawing of like, haha hes bright golden and hes toxic as fuck thus radioactive but also ive been learning recently through youtube video essays about like, the history of the study of physics throughout the 20th century and all the absolute nightmares that have occurred throughout, theres some bits that really stick with me like a woman being denied due to sexism participation in an experiment that couldve won her a nobel prize - that experiment being the detonation of a nuke over the open ocean & collection of whatever new chemical elements waft up to the atmosphere in the smoke. or ronald raegans existance just generally. and so theres something kind of, it's mournful that the alchemist will never see this but to me in a way it's mournful in a tear-stained dirty-faced way, like, because of all the horrors we've committed for science... anyway that overlaid on the emperor and his weird... pseudo scientific shit for an advancement of mankind that humankind might genuinely be better off without, i find parallels. i also think theres a lot of weight on the following lines in the context of a comparison to the emperor: "Alchemists, / you were right. / It is magic." because such a beautiful sentiment turns really sinister when thinking about the emperors pseudoscience: he was always lying. you cant build a guy that ignores the square cube law. it is magic

my notes for the rest: perturabo's script is surprisingly fast to write but i'm also partial to him having illegible cyrillic doctor script, KC/NH's was achieved through lifting my elbow way too high (i do not freehand) and is indeed aiming for little kid, angron's was achieved through using my left hand, mortarion gets round bubbly cursive because i think it's "mathematician handwriting" for some reason?, i've mentioned before i think magnus writes in illegible chickenscratch, horus has weird script bc he learned to write from either custodes or the emperor or both, and lorgar is writing in colchisian script here - ive posted, maybe, some bits of my colchisian script? but heres a guide just in case:

Some extended translations notes for episode 1

(Or moreso why certain things are translated as it is, because, uh, I put a lot of thought into these subs...)

"Crash through every obstacle."

Now this is the most important one. It IS the series' tagline and Hitto's catchphrase and you WILL be hearing it a lot. HKsubs and most summaries used "overcome the difficulties". D-rights used "Crash your adversity" (this is still the ONLY official English translation we got for Crash lmao) which, imo, both are fine as it is but if we look at the original sentence in Japanese further-

逆境を撃ち破れ uses the 撃 kanji instead of the more common 打ち破れ.

There's DEFINITELY a "crash" pun that needed to be made here, and D-rights' translation definitely went with that intention in mind. But I also don't want it to sound overly quirky like you see with hissatsu lines and all and prefer it as a proper motivational quote, so, yeah.

Uh, now that you know the breakdown/context/etc, with that in mind, I went with "Crash through any obstacles". It sounds both cool AND motivating, and the obstacles could apply to both the actual objects or struggles Hitto would face. There are def other ways I could go like "Crash through any hardship", "Break through every difficulties" etc, but I mainly wanted to avoid something too cheesy or too dry but still applicable in most situations? Yeah.

But eh, this could be just me though. You're always to suggest me something better that fits my description for it. Plus the quote can still be flexible if I eventually decide to do that. (Mainly keeping the "Crash Through Every"!)

Whatever the fuck Koutarou was reading

This...was frankly the hardest part to translate in the entire ep orz. Unfortunately, I lack knowledge of Japanese proses and stuff so googling his entire reading yielded nothing--however, some lines did appear to reference so actual literature and idioms.

"The mountains may have burned, but the birds...scorch themselves for their beloved children..." - This line supposedly references the lyrics to a folk song? It is a slightly different lyric though as it originally says 山は焼けても山鳥ゃ立たぬ 子ほど可愛いいものはない ("The mountains may have burned, but the birds didn't stand up, there's nothing cuter than a child"?). I can't be sure if this is an obscure song or not as googling a similar title is not giving me songs with the same lyrics. But eh. At least you know what Koutarou is referencing.

"Thou one shall not be lost like the fading mountain…like a parent who continues to feed into their child's greed." - OKAY THIS ONE IS FUNNY. Apparently the latter half was a reference to a proverb that originally says 子故に迷う親心 (A parent's mind is lost because of their child) which -- refers to parents that worry or spoil their child too much? OBVIOUSLY Koutarou is throwing shade at Hitto here as he didn't want to be "that" kind of parent towards his son so I did take some liberties with "feed into their child's greed" to emphasize that, rather than literally translating the phrase word by word haha.

"...destroy everything here marble-lously."

OKAY BEFORE ANYONE STARTS RAISING PITCHFORKS AT ME, YOU NEED TO DO THAT TO KODOH FIRST BECAUSE HE WAS ACTUALLY SAYING A PUN IN THIS SCENE.

I think these excerpts from B-Daman wikia explains the original double meaning well:

There's just sadly no elegant way to translate his lines into English without making it sound meme-y. I COULD translate the line literally like the image above but will that give you the same damage of hearing a stupid pun spit out from his mouth? Idk. My reasons for not literally translating this are not that convincing but I do hope you feel anguish knowing that Kodoh's debut line was a stupid damn pun. God. WHY IS HE MY OSHI.

"Rattlebrain"

One of Konta's catchphrase, "ガチャガチャ" / "gacha gacha". I think the MEANING Konta explained (as shown in the third screenshot) is important here, as originally he said 何が出てくるがわからない ("You don't know what's gonna come out") as it's obviously referencing to the randomness of actual gachas. I think going with translations like "fickle-minded" or "reckless" should work fine, but I will emphasize the fact that a) most people are often confused when he started saying it, implying that its not a common word or made up by Konta b) I do want to reference the "gacha gacha" as in the "shakey and clattering" onomatopoeia and the RNGs of real gachas. So yeah. Rattlebrain it is. I think it still delivers the same energy and intention that I mentioned. Plus my friend (Double) said "it's like Hitto's brain is a tin with marbles rolling around in it." WHICH, IS AN APT COMPARISON, ACTUALLY. And hence why I went with rattlebrain. Yeah. ~~~

An afterword: Crash's first ep is not the most complex to translate, but it does introduce some mainstay lines that you will hear a lot throughout the series (and may possibly be constantly mentioned in the fandom) and I think giving memorable, in-character translations is especially important when it comes to catchphrases and such.

It's those phrases where its double meaning and wordplay could be easily glossed over in most contexts (and I don't blame anyone if they do haha) but I personally do want to deliver the accurate intention and personality with these lines, hence the breakdowns. This is where having any familiarity with the source material is important, especially when you're translating an older show instead of an ongoing one. I mean, do you REALLY think me, the Crashhead here would gloss over such details? No.

And...yeah! I hope that was a helpful read? I'll emphasize that my translations are not perfect, but at the very least I want to put all my heart into them since, Crash is a series I hold close to my heart...over anything else, haha.

could be that that i'm getting a bit of a skewed perspective because of how my social media is curated but i'm seeing as much if not more hype around margot than ryan at this point? especially now that promo has kicked off and margot has some of the best red carpet promo styling that i've seen in recent memory.

Yeah, idk. I've seen a lot of hype around her outfits, and to be clear, these aren't just great promo outfits, but the BEST styling choices Margot has selected in basically her entire career. She is NOTORIOUS for having horrid style, lol, which I think is more noticeable because she's obviously a gorgeous, very conventionally attractive woman. Who should be easy to dress! But Kate Young is, frankly, super bad at her job and somehow botched it constantly (and not just with Margot). Andrew Mukamal started styling her more this year, and while I wouldn't say he's like... Law level, he really seems to have shown out for the Barbie press tour.

But, idk--Ken is having so much official promo dedicated to him. There's the "I'm Just Ken" song/promo tour. He's got the memorable parts of the teasers--the cheesing for the camera, the moment with the doctor, the sleepover. And the thing is, lol, Barbie is just as bland as Ken in doll form; she has more going for her, really, in that she has all the jobs. Ken just tends to get bumped up a lot in terms of being the Fun One, and to be fair that was a thing before this movie (Life in the Dreamhouse is another time I can remember Ken being the "meme worthy" one) but here it's even bigger.

I really do tend to wonder if some of it does have to do with Margot's career and rep kind of taking several hits before this. Although I loved Birds of Prey, it got zero support from DC and came out at a pretty unfortunate time; Amsterdam not only bombed, but made her look bad/hypocritical; she's gotten slammed a lot for not only the Russell association, but fawning over Brad Pitt in the press when backlash against him is rising; the 1920s movie was, I'll be honest, not only one of the worst movies I've seen in my life, but like... the pinnacle of an actress going so hard for an actor and ending up looking cringe as hell. You saw the attempt at rallying around her performance in online spaces, but she was never in serious contention because the truth was that the movie did laughably bad and her role was also really, really bad.

Whereas Ryan has been at this shit forever and had every form of image he could have without ever getting too bad. He was a teenybopper, he was a Rising Serious Star, he was a heartthrob, he was a part of a major tabloid relationship, he stepped back and settled down and became known as a wife and kids guy, he's done action, he's done comedy, he's tried real hard for an Oscar but, and this may be crucial lol, took time off after that didn't work. I'm not a stan, but I think he's been pretty smart about his career (and of course, had the benefit of being a cis white dude).

Idk. Margot just had a lot of bombs in a row for an actress in this stage of her career, in one case a LEGENDARILY major bomb; and we all know how harsh execs can be.
