170 hours later and this behemoth project is completed. After being moved to tears three times by Dr. Alareer's poem, I needed to create something. Hopefully this honours his memory.
Hoping to get some funding from local orgs to get this printed into a physical booklet for distribution.
From the river, to the sea!

If I must die,
you must live
to tell my story
to sell my things
to buy a piece of cloth
and some strings,
(make it white with a long tail)
so that a child, somewhere in Gaza
while looking heaven in the eye
awaiting his dad who left in a blaze–
and bid no one farewell
not even to his flesh
not even to himself–
sees the kite, my kite you made, flying up above
and thinks for a moment an angel is there
bringing back love
If I must die
let it bring hope
let it be a tale
-Refaat Alareer ( Palestinian Writer )

After If I Must Die by Refa’at Alareer
You had to die—
like those before you—
And with you, so many more.
And after you, so many more.
And after them, so many more.
You know, they still call it a war. If
your things could be found, by Allah
I would barter and fashion the
biggest of kites. Instead, here is
a different kind of exchange—your life
for our protests. Your poem for mine. This
is the tale: We rally and
raise our flags like kites—
red, green, black—and like you wanted,
white. The
child of Gaza sees the sky fill with angels
and he knows they can only be
angels for they are dressed in the colours
of Palestine. This is the love. We know
we are not angels, but by Allah, do we love.
We say: there is no need to bid farewell to the flesh,
or even to oneself. You will meet again,
one day in heaven. This is the hope.

Refaat Al-Areer’s brother, Adel, and his family need our help!
Tumblr media
“My name is Adel Al-Areer, and I send this heartfelt appeal with a heavy heart, seeking your help in our dire hour of need. Some of you may remember my brother Refaat Al-Areer, a well known writer and professor, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike on December 7. Before he was killed, Refaat wrote:
"If I must die,
you must live,
to tell my story"
With your help, my wife Kholoud and our beloved children – Aseel (aged 16), Mahmoud 14, Rafiq 10, and Sela 7- will be able to escape the harrowing turmoil of war-torn Gaza, and live to tell Refaat's story--all our story.”

If I must die.
The last poem by late Dr. Refaat Al Areer, who was assassinated by the Israel Occupation Forces along with his sister and her children.
He was the voice of Gaza. A poet, author, translator, and advocate, he mentored and trained a generation of writers and translators in Gaza to push for Palestine's story and narrative by its people.
Search for his work. Share his words. This is his legacy for us.

If we must live
Ghada Hania
The Electronic Intifada 8 December 2023
A poem for Dr. Refaat Alareer.
If we must live,
we shall unfold the tale,
where echoes of hope prevail.
Piece by piece,
weaving threads of hope,
a narrative retold.
We will fly a kite
that ascends through the vast expanse,
fluttering,
soaring,
in a rhythmic dance.
Like an angelic presence,
a smile takes flight,
landing gently
on every Gazan’s plight.
From the gaze of orphans,
to the grace of elders,
Hope will illuminate this sacred space.
The pained,
oppressed,
shall find their rest.
We’ll unfold the tale,
let echoes resound,
reviving hope
like raindrops abound,
quenching the thirst of arid hearts,
each part.
We will rise again,
opening the doors to the morning,
planting hopes tenderly.
From the start,
we shall embark,
like a bird’s melody,
we will compose hope in the strings of life.

The Story of a Poem: Refaat Alareer's 'If I Must Die'
By Salih J Altoma  “And in Gaza and the West Bank, a new generation of poets persists. The most famous, of course, is Refaat Alareer, who was murdered by an Israeli bomb in December 2023, and whose poem “If I Must Die” has rapidly become one of the most read and translated of the 21st century.” -Alex Skopic / Current Affairs (Jan/Feb 2024). “Refaat’s poem, viewed 33 million times on Twitter, is…

i know twitter screenshots are mostly cursed things on this website, especially these days, but I just want everyone on tumblr to see the Twitter post where everyone translated Dr. Refaat Alareer's poem "If I must die" into different languages. Genuinely the most touching thing the internet has given us in a while.
