it's so funny to me how many people wholeheartedly and literally believe gege on the whole hating gojo thing. because listen. i always thought of it as "i've created a character so good he literally gets in the way of the plot. i don't know what to do with him. his existence is a detriment to the development of every other character. a crutch if you will. he needs to be gone so others can have the spotlight bc otherwise it doesn't make any sense for the other characters to be getting bodied left and right. like wdym the strongest sorcerer's students are dying where was gojo when that was happening. ykwim. i need him gone. i've created a monstrosity" and not "i hate this guy's guts bc i don't like him as a character". don't get me wrong like gege definitely also doesn't personally like gojo's personality as in if a real person had that personality it would be horrific, but I don't think they literally "hate" gojo. anw this isn't meant to be serious it just tickles me bc i never took that at face value

“You’re from the future.”

The words froze Peyton’s soul. They collapsed the ground out from under her and stole her breath with it. She turned and Lex stood in the doorway, the mosaics on the wall twinkled around him in the afternoon sun; like some divine revelation was being bestowed upon him.

“I don’t understand what you’re-” she started to say. 

“It all makes sense now, really,” he continued. “Your strange speech, the way you know some Latin and yet not how to use it. The words you’ve borrowed from us. Your unusual clothing and how well they were tailored. And your book. A book filled with dates that have yet to be.” 

“That’s not it,” Peyton argued. And she was too alarmed to truly keep the fear from her voice. 

“You really must be the most valuable treasure I’ve ever come across.”

“Do you hear yourself? The future?” Peyton pressed her lips together and jutted out her chin in a mocking manner. “You’re speaking madness.”

“It was your notes that prompted me to do some investigating of my own,” he said. Peyton remained frozen as he strode further into the room. “I was able to discover a certain conspiracy. One it appears my own father is a part of. But you knew of the plot against Caesar already, didn’t you?” 

Even if Peyton could control her breathing, which she was barely doing, and even if she were able to keep her muscles loose, which she really wasn’t, she would never be able to fully mask the shock and horror in her eyes. All Lex had to do was look at her, which he was, and he had his answer. He tilted his head at her in a questioning manner. 

“You would have a man killed?”

She was stuck. The desperate part of her that wanted to remain delusional argued to lie again. To deny, deny, deny. As if insisting enough would convince him otherwise. But his gaze was resolute. Peyton swallowed. 

“I would not ‘have’ anything. It’s not for me to involve myself in.”

“Knowing and not saying anything is condemning him to death.” 

“It’s a part of history!” “It was a part of history.” 

Once more, the breath caught in Peyton’s throat. She slowly stood from the chaise and took a step closer; like someone warily approaching a car wreck. 

“What did you do?” Lex said nothing, just watched her reaction. “Lex, what did you do?” 

“I did the noble thing.” He smiled at her and it reminded her of his father. “I saved Caesar’s life, for which he is immensely appreciative. I daresay he trusts me above all others now.” 

She didn’t think her stomach could collapse any more than it already had, but she was wrong. Her mind flashed through scattered thoughts in a panic. Her mere presence, the journal, the flap of a butterfly’s wings. 

History had been irrevocably changed. And she’d just had a major hand in it.
