オススメの本 (初夏のスペシャル🌟) BOOK RECS EARLY SUMMER SPECIAL 🌟

Here’s a short quick version of my previous “BOOK PROMOS 2024” if you don’t wish to scroll all the way through it (^_−)−☆

She is actually the main character to my ongoing graphic novel called SYNTHETIC BLUE. You can either check it out on Wattpad or Webtoon.

If you’re curious what SB is about, it’s basically "Tumblr City" (err, Blue City in the story) through a futuristic sci-fi lens where furries, robots, aliens and the so-called "weirdos" get to live normal lives. They get to hold jobs, achieve higher education, own businesses and even start a family.

Of course, there’s a dark mystery looming underneath this wonderful city so it’s up to twelve-year-old Jane Sandberg and her friends -- Carlos "Oz" Carino and nineteen-year-old retired daredevil Lukas Olafsson -- to crack the case.

I was inspired by the idea of “What if the main villain from ‘BNA (Brand New Animal)’ was an AI?”

The following two images come from TCOTRB (The Case of The Red) and its upcoming sequel “AMANDI: The Secret Messenger” as shown from left to right. Both are available on Wattpad.

It’s about a group of middle school kids -- fourteen-year-old Milo Sidaris, Kaira Faez, Irene Ferrari, Leo Juegos and Jin Inoue -- uncovering one of the country’s deadliest mysteries following a massive disaster. Five years later into the sequel, they come face to face with a mysterious podcast host name Amandi who has ties to the world's most powerful families and conspiracies.

By the time they found out who it was, their friendship was never the same again.

Both of these books are inspired by my own personal experiences growing up and current events happening in the Philippines. It also tackles the challenges of growing up, friends, family, politics and inequality (especially between the rich and poor).

Now, let me remind you that despite having so many chapters, they’re actually short quick reads (usually less than a thousand words to be exact). It is also my first attempt at writing longer compelling stories with deep lore and mysteries.

It sits at the gothic intersection of scifi and Victorian horror, depicting an interplanetary war between our world and Mars. ☄ First published in serial form in 1897, H. G. Wells' novel follows an unnamed male narrator, attempting to make his way home to his wife. At his side, the reader experiences a recognisable landscape descend into chaos; simultaneously, monsters fall from the sky as fear transforms the humans on the ground into monsters themselves. ☄ Wells' original story has seen many successful adaptations, including Orson Welles' infamous radio performance and Jeff Wayne's musical imagining. I am lucky enough to have seen the latter on the stage in pre-pandemic days. Following the real world events of the past year[? Years? Lifetime?] how could my first journey into the big city be for anything but Jeff Wayne's 'The War of the Worlds' immersive experience? Short answer: it could not! A combination of live action drama, virtual reality, music and film, the fourth wall was shattered upon entry. ☄ Putting the horrors of reality out of mind for a few hours, it was the perfect treat. The Assassination of Brangwain Spurge by M.T. Anderson and Eugene Yelchin. Candlewick, 2018. 9780763698225. 544pp. with a discussion by Anderson and Yelchin at the end, about creating a book in which the illustrations disagree with the text. -   Elfin scholar Brangwain Spurge is loaded into a barrel then shot from a giant crossbow, sending him on a journey over the Bonecruel Mountains and into the goblin kingdom. (It goes worse than you’d imagine, even with that start.) He’s a spy with a mission from the Order of the Clean Hand and, unbeknownst to him, possibly an assassin. In the goblin kingdom he’s hosted by Werfel the Archivist, historian at the Court of the Mighty Ghohg, who’s excited to meet an elf despite the history of war between their peoples. Werfel tries to show Spurge the best of the goblin kingdom, and to prepare him to meet (and dance for) the otherworldly and somewhat inexplicable Ghogh. Nothing goes as planned: the pair don’t become fast friends, and it’s all Werfel can do to keep Spurge safe.   -   The story is immensely entertaining, especially as Spurge’s former tormentor back home starts to get what he deserves, and (minor spoiler) as a friendship forms between Spurge and Werfel. The book is full of silent sequences of images by Yelchin that look like 19th century goblin etchings sent through a library fax machine. They’re as hilarious as they are fun to read.
