"What's that?" you ask, peering over Spencer's shoulder. 

He turns his face to yours, sneaking a kiss against the curve of your neck. Your breath catches at his affection. "It's online shopping," he answers. "Have you seen it? They deliver your parcel the next day, apparently." 

You like the sound of that, wheeling your chair next to Spencer's to sit at his desk side by side. You're in the midst of a very rare occasion in which there's no  case and no paperwork. It won't last long, and you and your teammates are using these spare hours like a paid vacation. You deserve it (even if it isn't technically moral). 

"What are you buying?" you ask, squinting at his glaring screen. 

His gaze flashes between you and the monitor. He turns the brightness down for you. "You need new socks, right?" 

"Don't buy me socks." 

"Why not?" 

"Because I can buy my own socks?" 

"But I can also buy you socks. I felt bad this morning when I didn't have any matching pairs to lend to you. I'll buy you a big pack and this way you'll always have socks when you need them." 

"Spence, that's so sweet," you say, your hand on his bicep, thumb stroking a line he likely can't feel over his layers. "You really don't have to, though. I kind of like the odd sock look." 

Spencer looks down at your shoes. Your socks are mostly hidden. Despite what you've said, you don't like wearing odd ones, it doesn't fit your perfectly kept image, but you like Spencer a whole lot. 

"No, you don't, and that's fine." He clicks on the Buy Now button, a twenty four pack of black and white crew socks jumping into his cart. "What else should we get?" 

"We?" you ask, leaning back. 

You've barely lifted your left leg when Spencer grabs you by the knee and drapes it over his right. "You never have the stuff you need when you come over. We may as well get it all done now while we have time." 

"Are you serious?" you murmur, a slight pout to your lips. 

Spencer's eyes dart down, catch, and lift back to yours. He sounds soft as you do as he says, "Of course I am. Am I being too forward?" 

"You're never too forward. I'm too forward enough for both of us, Spence. But you don't have to buy me things, I can get all of this stuff myself and bring it with me." 

"What kind of boyfriend does that make me?" 

You can't believe he's your boyfriend. You could scream. "The most adorable one ever?" And that's just the half of it. Spencer Reid has a penchant for ignoring his own good looks. He could've been a super model if the whole genius thing didn't work out. "I need a pillow, then. If we're doing this Reid, let's do it. But I'm paying for my stuff." 

"Okay, angel. Whatever you say." 

You almost miss it, his pet name. Your brain assumes sarcasm, but when you play it back, there's only a soft giving in, like he'd do anything you asked him to just because it's you. Because you're an angel. 

You've called him so many pet names and though you knew they flustered him, you're thinking maybe the team was right, and that you were torturing him the whole time. You melt like a little square of butter in the middle of a frying pan, limp in your seat and uncomfortably warm. Angel. It inspires the want to be saccharinely sweet to him, and you would if you could regain your strength. 

You huff a breath up your hot face in hopes of cooling down. 

"What kind of pillow? Do you want a really soft one? They have hypoallergenic, or down feather." He looks at you sideways. "You can't pay for this, it's too expensive." 

"It's sixteen dollars," you say, feeling submerged. 

"Exactly. Are you okay? You look uncomfortable." 

"I'm feeling a bit hot, suddenly. Hot flush." 

Spencer abandons the computer and his online activities to unbutton the top button of your shirt, and then the second, his hands achingly gentle against your collar. "I'll buy a fan," he says, one hand trailing down your arm soothingly as the other searches for paper. "But for now." 

He fashions you an origami fan and fans you diligently. It works for a time, but you remember the dulcet cadence of his voice and the delicate way he strung the syllables together as though 'angel' were the name you were given at birth, and you feel warm all over again.

It's been 2 months since Nova was born. Tonight is the first time me and Harry are actually going to be spending some time together without the baby. I was really appreciative about leaving her but when Faith said she'd look after her I knew she'd be alright. Faith has spent lots of time at my apartment and I've spent lots at her house, to keep each other company when the boys are on a shoot, so I know Nova loves her.

I quickly got ready while Harry watched the baby. I slicked back my slightly greasy hair (since I've been too busy to wash it), put on some makeup then threw on a dress with a matching blazer and some dark brown boots. Once I was finished I took Nova from Harry so he could quickly get dressed. Then we got all of Nova's stuff, Harry took some photos of me for my instagram in the lift, got her strapped into her car seat and made our way to Ethan and Faith's house.

When we arrived outside the big black gates surrounding the front of the house I gave Faith a quick text and the gates opened a few seconds later. "Hey!" Faith said emerging from the house and walking towards the car. I smiled lightly "hi!" Her mouth dropped slightly "you look incredible!" She said. A small blush covered my cheeks "thanks." Ethan came out a few minutes later with Olive attached to his hip. "You alright mate?" He said to Harry as he got out of the car. "Yea mate, you?" Harry replied. "Good good. Where's Nova?" Ethan asked. "Oh shit ye!" I said quietly running over to the back seat door. Faith laughed "I've done that before." She stated.

"She'll be fine." Faith said trying to comfort me as I walked out of the front door. "I know, I know, I trust you. But-" I sighed. "I felt the exact same the first time I left Olive with someone else, I still hate it now. Just go and enjoy your night, try not to worry too much." She said kindly. I smiled "thanks Faith, see you later." I said and with that both me and Harry hopped into the car and sped off towards the restaurant.

Once we arrived we headed inside and were taken to the table we'd pre booked, by the waitress who was stood at the front desk. "y/n, she's fine." Harry said as I stared at my phone. I looked up at him "I know." I said desperately trying to focus. My phone dinged "it's Faith!" I said, quickly picking up my phone. "She cried a little but she just fell asleep xx" I sighed "she's asleep." I relayed the message to Harry. He smiled "good now you can stop worrying." He said with a little laugh. I smiled and nodded.

After eating our food, paying and getting into our car we made our way back to Faith's house to pick Nova up. When we quietly entered the house Ethan gave Harry all the bags and he took them to the car. Then I followed Faith up the stairs and into the spare bedroom where Nova's travel cot was set up. I smiled as I saw her sleeping peacefully in the cot. I looked to Faith "thank you for looking after her." I whispered. She smiled "she was so good, we're happy to watch her anytime." She said. I nodded then gently lifted Nova from her cot and moved her into her car seat, thankfully not waking her up.

Once we got home I took the baby into mine and Harry's bedroom and placed her into the crib next to our bed. She stirred slightly but drifted back to sleep as I lightly rubbed her back. I crept out of the room and entered the living room to see Harry sat on his phone. I sighed deeply as I plopped myself down onto the opposite side of the couch and lay my feet on Harry's lap so my back was against the arm of the sofa. He placed his free hand on my legs and looked towards me "I know it was difficult leaving her, I'm really proud of you." He said. I smiled "thanks Haz."

It's important to Fred that you spend time together, even when you're fighting. You hadn't understood at first what that was like. Usually, when you fight, you need space, right? That's just how it feels.

Fred doesn't want that, and he expresses it with zero qualms.

"I wanna sit on the settee together, okay?" he asks your back. You've taken refuge on his side of the bed. "You don't have to speak to me if you don't want to."

You're not giving him the silent treatment, you're having a hard time talking. The silent treatment hasn't ever felt very fair — he hasn't stopped existing to you. You're eager to fix the problem between you, to resolve the argument, but you don't know what to say. Neither does he.

You turn around. You don't smile at him, though you want to. His lips twitch like he might, but he only opens the door wider and nods his head. "You want to bring the quilt?"

You bring the quilt. He takes it from you when you're near, and he drapes it over you once you've sat yourself down on the settee. You're unsurprised when he makes tea.

"Thank you," you say. He holds the side so you can take the handle, like he always does, burning his fingertips no doubt.

And this is where he'd kiss your cheek and say, "You're welcome." He's thinking about it, you can tell. You jut your chin in case he wants to, and then he's kissing you, the impassable space between you passed as if nothing's wrong.

Something is wrong, though.

He can tell how hard this is for you. Fred means a lot to you. You love him, he's your partner, but it's more than that. He's your best friend. He's the most consistent thing in your life. Fighting with him makes you anxious, it makes you want to cry, and it makes you want to hurt yourself, even in small ways. Not because you're punishing yourself, and not because you're punishing him. You don't know how to deal with the feelings that you're feeling, and it's as simple as that. Your outlet for emotion is hurting.

You haven't hurt yourself, though, because if you do, Fred might think it's because of him. To spite him, or even just his fault. Neither could ever be true, you'd never hurt yourself to hurt him. You'd never hurt yourself because of him. But it's really hard not to. And it's hard not to tell him, because you tell him almost everything. You feel very alone. You miss him to death.

He strokes your cheek with the side of his knuckle and sits in his seat.

"Freddie," you murmur. "Do you want to talk about it?"

He looks so relieved. "Yeah," he says quietly, "of course I do."

You've started the conversation, and you have to extend the olive branch. Not easy when your memory is a sieve, and anything that wasn't thrumming guilt has slipped away. You want to say sorry and have it be done with, but you don't want to say it for the sake of it. He deserves a proper apology.

"Can you explain it to me?" you ask.

He picks up his mug of tea, second hand held close enough to feel the warmth but not enough to burn. You're holding your mug double handed, skin scalded.

"Have you been crying?"

You look down at your lap. "Not really."

"Ghost, it's- it's not something you have to upset yourself over."

"I'm sorry," you whisper immediately.

"I didn't mean to snap at you yesterday." He huffs, and then he sighs, putting his mug back on the coffee table. "Before we talk about it, I want to lay down some groundwork. Stuff that's permanent. Okay?"

You wince. "Okay."

"I love you."

Tears well in your eyes, burning hot. "Okay."

"I don't think anything has changed, or will change between us because of this argument... Do you feel the same?"

You look up and find only patience in his face. He's not smiling or happy, but he's not mad. He's not annoyed that he has to reassure you.

The big freckle on his chin twitches as he opens his mouth, lips forming the letters a second before he speaks. "You're my girl. You don't have to cry, alright? We just need to talk about this."

Relief is a lightning rod, heat so hot it has pinpricks of sweat prickling over your entire body. You kick the quilt off of your legs.

"Are you sure?" you ask.

He finally smiles. "Am I sure that I love you? More than anything."

"Are you sure it doesn't change anything?" Couples argue and argue and argue, and then they break up.

He nods slowly. "I think so. Do you think it's something we won't be able to move past?"

No. Your urgency must show. Fred pushes his open hand across the settee and you take it like a lifeline.

"You know, everybody fights," he says, almost fond as he pulls your now joined hands back toward him. His knuckles flex between yours, and soon he's got your hand in his lap, painting circles over the back of it with a steady fingertip.

"Not us."

"It's not necessarily a bad thing," he says. "We can't walk around not telling each other things. I thought maybe that's why it got to the point that it did." He meets your eyes. "You know?"

"Yeah," you say, though you're not sure.

The fights is a blur of feelings rather than what you'd said. It could be boiled down to two specifics; Fred being upset with you for isolating yourself from others, you being upset with Fred for misunderstanding. But, as most fights go, it certainly hadn't stayed contained to those things. You'd said both things you meant and things you didn't, though neither of you had said anything cruel. You're quite happy with that.

"I know this stuff gives you a heart attack, but we gotta do it."

"I want to talk about it," you assure him. You want to crawl into his arms and stay there forever, but you'll settle for this, your hand in his hand.

So you talk about it. Fred tries to put his point across again but he folds in the things you'd said. He apologises for a misconception. He apologises for raising his voice. He's forgiven for both immediately.

You reaffirm your own argument, and your throat burns because you really don't care anymore, you just don't want him to be angry. But if what he said is true, lying to him here could end in another argument down the line, one that'll be worse for the both of you.

"Freddie," you say finally, at your bursting point, "I'm sorry. I'm really sorry. I know you said we have to fight, but I hate it, and you're my everything." You can barely speak, embarrassed to need him like this. "I'll do whatever you want me to do to make it better."

He pulls your hand to his cheek and holds it there, leaning his weight into it just slightly. "That's kind of my point, sweetheart. I want you to want to do these things because you want to. Not because I asked you to."

You hang your head. If you bite your lip hard, your tears won't fall. They waver at the waterline.

"Tell you what. How about we talk about this tomorrow?" he asks.

A first tear dribbles down your cheek weakly. It's a very small tear. You hope he doesn't notice, but of course he does, and his voice goes soft as silk.

"We've worked it out, ghost," he murmurs, kissing your hand hurriedly, then your wrist. "You don't need to worry. I'm not angry with you."

"I'm sorry-" Your breath catches. You try again. "I'm sorry for being like this. I know it's just a normal argument. I know it's normal, I don't know why I can't be. I know you're not mad, but I feel so stupid."

"Why?"

Your shoulders tremble with a self-loathing sob, though Fred takes it for overwhelmed, and he shuffles across the settee to nudge your shoulder with his.

"Because I'm upset about all the wrong things."

"Who says what the right thing is?"

"I'm making this about me."

"It is about you. It's about both of us, and it's about you." He wipes the tears that he pooled at your chin away with the back of his hand, and then he turns his palm inward to stroke up to your cheek, angling your face in his direction. He stares at you, unflinching. It's a kind of devotion for him to look at you crying and sniffling with so much love. "Would it make you feel better to know I'm upset we're fighting too? I miss you." He laughs, but it doesn't detract from his sincerity. That cuts like a knife.

"You're sure we're okay?" you ask

"I need you," he says, and then amends, "I love you as much as I did before we argued. I love you more, probably."

"Probably."

He beams at you, wiping flecks of tears from your wet lashes carefully. "Definitely. You would have to do something truly, truly awful for me to stop. And I mean, even then..."

You laugh wetly. He's generous for being this way, making jokes and wiping your tears, assuaging your fears even though the argument isn't entirely settled no matter what he claims. You have to work on being better, both of you. Nothing's ever so cut and clean.

"Do you have anything you want to tell me? Something you want me to do, the next time we argue? I-" He chucks you under the chin. "Don't like seeing you this way. But you know that."

"I don't want to go to bed mad at each other," you say quickly. That had been a sick torture.

"Okay, we won't. We'll stay up next time."

There's not much else you can think of. Fred's giant heart has made this easier than it might have been. You try to say thank you and the words gum up in your mouth, distracted by his thumb stroking a short back and forth from the middle of your chin to the underside of your jaw. It's a tickling thing, the lightest of touches.

"I love you," you say. In lieu of thank you for being so patient with me.

"I know. I know."

He's never been anything but patient. Maybe he understands why you are the way that you are. He definitely realises that your emotion tends to come before any logic, and that doesn't make you hysterical or in the wrong. It's one of those things woven into who you are.

"I love you, and... I think it's good for us to fight sometimes. I don't want you to think you can't disagree with me, that this," — he squeezes your joined hands — "is conditional. Because it isn't. You can rail at me, if you liked. I could be into that."

You laugh, relaxing into his side unconsciously. "What, the-" You sniffle. "The nagging girlfriend?"

"Yeah. I think I'd like it if you bossed me around. You could, you know? I'd love it."

"You'd love it," you repeat, unconvinced.

He wraps the arm that isn't pressed to yours around the back of your head, hand above your ear, encouraging your crown to his lips. "Yeah, I would. I love when you talk," he says into your hair. "The sound of your voice. Even when you aren't saying things I agree with."

This has to be one of the best feelings on earth. Being sorry and being forgiven. A warmth that wants nothing from you but yours in turn. Fred's hand playing behind your ear, down your neck and up again. Your shoulders shake with a sudden but singular sob, and you hide your face in his front before he can see it. He can feel it.

"Are you okay?" you ask him.

"Me?"

He pets your back for emphasis.

"You," you say. "Are you still upset?"

He takes a few seconds to think it over. "Maybe a little bit."

You're not very well most of the time, and you process things differently, but making him feel better is something you've always been able to do. You fight back all your tears and drag yourself away from his chest, hands trembling minutely but determined as you cup his cheeks.

He raises his eyebrows at you.

You stroke his cheeks with your thumbs.

Fred laughs, happy at first and then weaker as it goes on.

"Groundwork," you say. "Stuff that won't change. I love you."

He nods and does that things boys do when they're trying not to cry, a quick, too casual blink. He clears his throat. "I love you too."

"You're very handsome."

His laugh thickens. "Tell me more."

"You're my best friend. You're the best friend I could ever have."

You stare at each other for entirely too long, like a cheesy rom-com movie, adoration and relief brightening your eyes and an unspoken agreement between you as your hands move into his hair. He gathers you up into a wonky, amazing hug. You squeeze him and he squeezes you.

You're giggling like a little kid. He squeezes harder and the giggles turn apprehensive.

"Freddie, don't," you beg.

"What was that?" he asks, squeezing you some more, hands vying for your sides, ready to do some damage. "Can't hear you over all that pretty laughing."

"That's terrible, and it's not true 'cause my laugh sounds like a-"

Rather than let you insult yourself, Fred squeezes extra hard. It's more a nice pressure than anything painful, the air whooshing out of you. Too shocked to laugh, you sigh like an idiot and clutch at his shoulder blades.

"Feeling better?" he asks.

You press your face to his neck. "Yeah." You feel really, really good.

He drops his face to find yours. His breath crests over your cheek like a wave. The fighting almost feels worth it, to make up with him like this.

"Let's never fight again," he says grandly. Obviously joking, hopped up on the same affection high as you are.

"Never," you agree.

Maybe it’s because he’s faced death too many times. Stared it down in the eye and lived to tell the tale. Maybe it’s because it’s easier to pretend the feelings he holds for you aren’t deeper than what they presently are. Maybe it’s because the fear of losing you is greater than the desire he has to be with you. But he knows that’s not true. And it feels wrong to even think that; you’re his best friend, he loves you, he might be in love with you. 

He’ll never tell you, though. Love scares him. The last time he loved it swallowed him up and spat him back out. Last time he loved, he watched the person he thought he could see a future with run back into the arms of someone who loved her better than he ever could. 

Such is life, isn’t it? 

It’s been two years since then and you’re a bright spot in his life. Someone he runs to on his worst days, fills it with laughter, fills it with your easy smiles and candor. You’re comfort to a weary soul, a tether when his mind slips away into the past—into visions of swirling red skies and fluttering wings, of monsters that crawl in a world that no longer is. 

It starts the way most of these things do: one night you get a little too cozy, hands start to wander, sticky kisses press to exposed skin. He gasps as your mouth slides along sensitive flesh, watches as your eyes roll into the back of your skull as he sinks in minutes after he watches you fall apart on his tongue, writhing with your thighs splayed around his shoulders. It’s meant to be a one time thing, but these things never are. 

One time turns to two, and soon it’s every weekend, and before long it’s months of roaming hands in dark alleyways after having a drink at a bar, it’s him pinning you against the door to his bedroom and watching you fall apart around his fingers, and right now it’s your gasps filling the cabin of his car as you fold against his chest, skirt high up on your thighs, his softening cock still inside of you, heartbeats slowing down into a normal rhythm, melting into the steady drum of rain splashing against the windows. 

There’s nothing normal about this time, though. It’s different. You lean back in his lap, eyes hazy with your release, lazy lips sliding languidly over his. He sighs against your mouth, tongue licking into you, drawing out the last remnants of your pleasure, before your hands come to rest on his shoulders and you whisper, “I want more than this.”

“You want more than this…” He’s not understanding. And then again, he’s never asked. You’ve never talked about it. These trysts, these moments between you, they’ve never disrupted your friendship. They may have blurred it, blurred the lines of it, but you’d never talked about more. Always some unspoken agreement between the two of you; at least until now. 

“I want to be with you, Stevie. I don’t want to hide behind our friends' backs. I…I want this. Us.” Your voice breaks off at the end, and in that he knows he’s already made a mistake. Because his mouth drops open at your words and he can’t find it in himself to speak. 

He doesn’t speak for some time. Therein lies the problem. He realizes too late as your bottom lip trembles and you nod stiffly. As you slide your skirt back down over your thighs and climb off of him. As you open the backseat door and slip out of his car and into the pouring rain. 

“Where are you going?!” He’s stumbling out of the car, buckling his pants as he races through the darkened streets behind your trembling form. 

You whirl around to face him and the hurt on your features is a lightning bolt to his chest. A knife to the gut he’s not prepared for. “Home!” 

“Let me drive you!” His voice is drowned out by the thunderous drops lashing against the ground. Drowned out by the own frantic throb of his heart. “Baby, slow down!”

You do better than that. You stop, and it’s only because your face crumples and you start to cry. The sight alone nearly kills him. Crushes the wind clear from his lungs. His arms curl around your shoulders and drag you close, and he wonders if you can feel him shaking, because he’s terrified when he speaks. When he whispers, “I broke my rules for you.”

“W-what do you—”

“I love you.” 

Three words. Three words he’s not said in years. Three words that someone had made him believe he’d never hear. Never earn. Three words with the weight to crush him—to send him crashing like he had so long ago. Three words that have you clutching at the front of his shirt, teary eyes meeting his face. You’re both shivering, both drenched to the bone, but it doesn’t matter now. 

None of it matters except for you. 

Maybe it’s been that way all along. 

“I don’t know what I’m doing. I haven’t done this in so long and I’m probably shit at it, you’ll have to be patient, but I love you and I’m…I want this. I want us, too. I’m just—I’m scared and I—”

“I love you, too.” Your lips brush his, soft and delicate, arms curling around his waist to drag him close. “We’ll figure it out together, okay? I just want you.”

And so you kiss under a streetlight, clothes sticky and plastered to your bodies, hair stuck to skin, but neither of you cares. 

Nothing else matters. 

Only this. Only now.
