I have finally... FINALLY finished this. This was meant to be a relatively quick thing, but of course because I have literally zero chill it took upwards of ten hours across three days.

Under the cut are some ramblings about symbolism and my process, as well as the original redraw "meme" this is based on:

Ramblings:

So this originally started as another ship, but then I realised that longing look at something you can never have is very Reki post episode 6. I deliberately chose a cool toned colour scheme for the whole picture except Reki, so he'd stands apart more and look out of place to visualise how he feels that second half of the series.

I also initially planned to make Langa's scarf blue (like i think it is in canon, in those baby pics? I didn't check because I scrapped that idea before I would have needed to) but then decided against it for two reasons:

1. it would've been too much blue, and a separation between the light tones of the head and torso areas divides up the picture nicely.

and 2. I wanted the very dark tone to be somewhat sinister and give the impression of a noose around his neck, symbolising Adam's hold on him :)

Partway through the lineart i made some very subtle changes to Langa's expression compared to the original billboard, which just looks radiantly joyful. To fit Langa's conflicted feelings (on one hand he's thrilled to be skating against talented skaters in the tournament, but on the other he's anxious and worried about having made a mistake and drifting apart from Reki). To show those things, I gave his eyebrow a little quirk that creates a little wrinkle, and the corner of his mouth a tiny line of tension.

I also really liked the "It's like burning" line from the billboard, and thought it fit really well with Reki's pain as well. Even among all the snow, what he feels is burning him up. And as @piiloh-case pointed out to me, strong temperatures always feel like burning, whether they're hot or cold.

This last thing has nothing to do with symbolism, but I tried out a new colouring/shading style and I'm really liking it :) I think I'm not made for the soft shaded look, so I might go with this in the future.

A/N: Okay I know I have A LOT of other things to write but a friend needed to hear this, and I'm making it public in case anyone else needs to hear it as well <3 take care y'all

You hadn't been feeling well lately. Everything felt so distant, so meaningless that you just didn't wanna bother.

And so slowly, your sleeping became less and less long; you even ate less as well.

But you didn't wanna think too much about it. It was just regular stuff after all, nothing to worry about.

Or so you thought.

You probably should have noticed the signs already when you pulled an all-nighter without wanting to randomly.

Yet, that didn't even ring any particular alarm to you. Not even a sound, maybe a singular neuron in your brain was questioning wether or not something was going on, but that was all.

On the other side, your skater friends were getting more and more worried.

Why is that you ask? Well your lack of sleep was causing dark bags under your eyes, your attention span was getting shorter and shorter, so much that you barely answered to your name

"Y/N! Y/N! HELLOOO?" Reki was practically shouting as he waved his hand across your face to try and get you to answer.

"Oh- uh…what..sorry, I wasn't listening" You tried to laugh it off, but you noticed it clearly wasn't working when you saw reki's concerned look on his face.

"Are you okay Y/N? We were worried about you!" He grabbed your shoulders to make sure he kept your attention as the others nodded in agreement to his last statement, the whole gang surrounding you.

"I'm fine…jeez, what did you guys get so worked up for?" You fought back the urge to yamn as you felt it would be contradictory to your statement.

"How many hours of sleep did you even get last night? You're even more of a slime than usual!" Miya added from the side as he took a step closer to you.

Reki turned to Miya as he spoke, then quickly turning to you again, his worry-filled eyes looking straight at you as he grabbed onto your shoulders a bit more subconsciously.

You were internally panicking. You really didnt wanna bother them with your problems…you just really didn't think they'd care all that much, that's all.

"Do you mean last night as in the last time I slept or as in the last time I should've slept?" You tried to use humor to your advantage again, but the strategy still wasn't working, they only looked more concerned!

Fast forward a few hours, you found yourself in bed, the whole squad trying to manipulate you into sleep.

"Y/NNN come on you need sleep!" Reki kept nagging you as you were forcefully tucked into bed by Miya and Langa

"I'm fiiiine..you guys worry for nothing" You laughed it off again, looking up at them as you tried to get up, an attempt which they stopped immediately

"Just when did you last eat?!" Reki sighed as he felt how weak you were when he stopped you from getting up

"I mean I ate some air..." you laughed. They weren't taking it as lightheartely as you did though.

Reki looked away from you for a second, looking over at everyone.

"Langa! Go get some food!" Lana nodded in agreement

"Miya! Go learn how to perform hypnosis in order to make someone sleep! And Joe, Cherry... you two... put on a dramatic soap opera to entertain Y/N while the others prepare everything!"

Long story short, you never got to pull an all-nighter ever again

Reki is often talked about online as being dramatic and a bad friend. he was fucking depressed! people who are depressed tend to self-isolate and just,,, (sometimes) don't make the bestest of friends no matter how HARD they try to. (speaking from experience here and that is NOT the case for everyone who has depression but esp in highschool? bruh)

imagine you're somewhere with your best friend and some other friends that you aren't around constantly and the ENTIRE time you're watching your friend do something that they are good at (that both of you do TOGETHER for FUN) you're standing there, listening to people you thought was the slightest bit your friend say that no one even knows you are outside of an extension of your other friend. that you aren't as good. that you "latched on to them"

16/17 year olds are fragile with self-esteem because it's such a BIG time in their lives. Reki sat there and listened to these things CONSTANTLY and because he got sad and pulled away, he's the bad friend?

Langa wasn't the greatest friend (bc I'm pretty sure the kid didn't know how to be friends with anyone lmao) but the difference is, while Langa didn't know what was going on he made an effort to try and figure out why reki was not there anymore. we never even see any sort of apology from Miya, we get the one scene in the elevator where Miya is upset (and because he's a lot younger and due to how guarded and crabby he is as a character, he probably never connected the dots.)

the point is: if there was a bad friend it wasn't Reki. But it's not about being a bad friend, or who was one. that is literally so far removed from the storyline that it's weird how OFTEN I hear about it. they are all struggling. in the beginning, they are all struggling separately.

Cherry and Joe no longer hang out like they did as teens. Cherry's wrapped up in why Adam does what he does and how he left them. Joe just wants his friend Cherry back. Langa is dealing with the death of his father AND then moving countries. Miya deals with bullies at school and then the isolation and loneliness he feels is the best in his school when he just wants to skate with his friend. Shadow has a crush on his manager and didn't know how to approach her. and reki? reki was a loner. he had no friends at school, he lost his only skate friend due to injuries and he worked at the skate shop.

literally, the story is so much deeper than a skating community having problems throughout it with other skaters. it's about a group of (unlikely) people coming together (or back together for Joe and Cherry) and not feeling so isolated in everyday life and understanding that it is fine to still have hobbies because it's FUN and your life shouldn't be about working to death and being lonely. (also think about how this takes place in Japan and there's a lot of talk, esp from foreigners, about how lonely it is because all there is work. it can be really isolating.) what I also don't understand, going slightly back to thoughts I had watching blue period, is calling langa and kageyama prodigies. I genuinely don't get it

langa has been snowboarding since he was able to stand, so obviously his physical data will be great, and because of that, he can adapt quickly to any other sport, especially the one that is pretty similar. he didn't start from zero, like, for example, reki (as far as we know) and even reki is amazing. honestly, whatever prodigy means out of two, from what we know, he might be more worth this title, although I don't think we know that much about his past before skating

Random ask....Do you think anime like Free, Sk8, Jeweler Richard and Yuri on Ice are queerbaiting or at least have semi canon couples? I mean I love those anime series and my fav otps are from those series, but what do you think? Okay, off bat, I'll say that "queerbaiting" is a lose term to me. People use it so much that most of the time I feel like they say it just to say it. (Not directed at you, Anon.)

And I actually never watched Jeweler Richard. I've heard of it, but I didn't watch it... because I forgot about it. I also, never watched all of Free!

Now to answer the first bit... I'm leaning towards "no" here.

Queerbaiting to me is if the promise of some queer rep happening is marketed just to draw in the audience and then the people who made said show switches it up at the end like "oops sorry, actually these characters are totally straight and they're dating people of the opposite sex" and erase all that rep or just never touched on it.

Yuri On Ice, I wouldn't consider it queerbaiting because we get some same-sex romance. It happened. Even if the gay romance in there was used in marketing, it still happened. Sure, it did lure in the audience, but promises were not broken. Yuri and Viktor are a thing.

Same for SK8, I don't consider it queerbaiting either.

BONES never promised us that Reki and Langa were going to be a thing by the end of season 1. We also gotta remember that SK8 isn't a strictly romance. It's a SPORTS anime just like YOI. So the show focused more on skateboarding and the purpose of it for the characters than actual romance because it's not necessary.

It's why I really disliked how some people treated the ending as if it was the worse thing in the world. Maybe it's just me, but I didn't get mad at it because I just wanted my boys happy and skating together again.

Just because Reki and Langa didn't kiss, it didn't mean that we were queerbaited. They weren't promised to be a couple. Surely implied, maybe yeah, but explicitly promised? No.

Also, just because a couple doesn't kiss at the end doesn't mean they're not canon. A ship doesn't have to kiss to be canon!

Kida and Milo didn't kiss at the end of Atlantis: the Lost Empire, but guess what? People were aware they're a couple by the end of it. They held hands and that was it.

Kissing isn't the only romantic gesture. There's hugging, cuddling, holding hands, words and even jumping in front of someone to protect them.

And just like how all that can be romantic, it also can be platonic, too. It depends on the context of how that action or those words are being used to show romance or just platonic feelings.

We really don't know if a relationship is a canon romantic one unless it's confirmed.

Back to SK8, at best, the relationship between Reki and Langa is an explicit close one. They trust each other, they want to skate together, they're comfortable around each other, they are friends.

And with a season 2 apparently coming, Reki and Langa may just happen. It was probably built up the way it was for a chance to make it canon, just in case they could do a second season. But just in case they couldn't, they ended it on a safe note, let the audience interpret how Reki and Langa feel about each other but made it clear that they are indeed close.

Now for the second part!

I think those animes have the largest shipping fandoms over BL series because they are some of the most popular animes. A lot of romantic series slide over the radar because series like BNHA and Naruto have a wider reach. There's games, cons where the VAs show up, movies, collabs, etc. They're also the "less risky" series.

People wouldn't clutch their pearls if someone says "Oh this anime is about superheroes" or "this anime is about ninjas".

However, if you say "Oh, this is about a romance between two boys", you're probably going to get someone homophobic.

I also figure because even without gender or sexuality involved, people don't care for an actual romance anime. With a romance, it's like... because it is a romance you know who is going to be with who. You can be happy with the choices, but maybe the thrill isn't there. You know the clichés and whatnot. The characters are the same characters you see in any romance.

However, let's say with BNHA. There's a thrill to shipping... I'll take DabiHawks off the shelf for this. There's a thrill because DabiHawks, it's a variety to it. You don't get the "boy next door" or "the better guy but not the choice". You get two enemies that fans turn into lovers in their fics. People dig the enemies to lovers trope and characters like Hawks and Dabi have fans drawn into the series. They're "cooler" than the male love interest of a romance.

And fanworks are there to create something that you can't possibly get in canon.

Some people may feel this: what's the point of writing a fic of a ship that is already canon?

You probably were a new soul in heaven at the gates seeing as you seem like you wouldn't end up in hell.

You probably met in the zoo or at the entrance to it. Why Adam was at the zop is still unknown but he was there. He was probably watching over Emily as she looked at everything

She saw you and introduced you to Adam as a new soul trying to get him to meet some other people

He probably didn't remember your name at first...

He was also really rude when you were polite calling you a pushover and leaning on you trying to make you feel small

This didn't work on you no matter how many times he called himself the 'original dick'

After a while of dealing with him you both probably walked around and began talking with each other. He was probably kinda brash and rude the entire time but you never took it from him and he fell in love

You were also still kind to him and he felt kinda bad after a while

Of course he didn't apologize for his behavior but he did regret in come way

When you get into one of your rambles he might end up zoning out but then he'll zone back in and most likely say the most out of pocket shit you've ever heard before

You being straightforward with him is amazing as you're not afraid to correct with some stuff which is great because you humble him every now and then

When you use big words he doesn't understand he'll pause for a moment and call you a nerd

"I don't know what those long ass words exist anyways like just fucking explain it bitch,"

When he's kinda mean to you he doesn't really mean it and thinks of it being funny. Although if you get uncomfortable he'll try and stop... keyword being try

You being curious and a rule breaker is something that he loves and will in fact encourage especially if it 'sticks it to the man'. He'll always stand up for you if you get someone mad and will be curious with you and sometimes do dumb shit in the process

He'll also probably try and pull some pranks with you every now and then on Sera or Peter. but maybe not Emily as you would both get your asses beat, plus she's really nice and you both like her so there's that

He'll also love to gossip with you. Actually he'll probably take you to the exorcists and you'll all just gossip together. That's how you met Lute and to be honest she was probably a lot and he tried keeping you away from her

You probably don't get along with her as much as him but you do have some things in common so that helps

You bring water bottles and medical kits for the exorcists when he brings you to watch them train

You quickly became a favorite of theirs as you care more for them than Adam in some aspects. Sometimes you'll even force him to help you carry stuff to them

Adam is the last person to give a shit about your anger issues. He'll actually encourage you to take them out on someone probably giving you a dummy and telling you to hit it and beat the shit out of it

As for being verbally aggressive he also just doesn't care and will probably join in with you

He doesn't mind you being overprotective but if it gets out of hand he will end up running/flying away from you but then getting you something to make up for it

You preen his wings for him every now and then and he loves it and will run up to you just to get you to do so

"Preen now!!!"

You also helped him out with the whole Eve and Lilith thing helping him get over it

This likely took some time for him to open up to you about it thinking that you might just run off or run away from him still thinking about his exes even if it wasn't in a romantic way more of an 'how did i fuck up that bad' way

But you helped him out and even though it was hard for him to open up (this took like a whole week of talking probably and opening up) he did so and ended up crying on your shoulder afterwards

He was likely very embarrassed after the talk and never wanted to bring it up again

He did NOT want you finding out about the exterminations. He knew that you would likely oppose them just from a few conversations with you and he didn't want to lose you

So you can imagine what did happen when you found out about them. Let alone it was he who suggested them

This resulted in a long argument between you two that carved a gap in your relationship but he kept begging you to forgive him saying that it was what was best for heaven and that they didn't have another choice

He even brought up Sera saying how important she was and that he never would've done the exterminations if she didn't approve of him going down there

This is where he might've lied saying that he took no pleasure in killing demons in order to keep you happy

He felt really guilty afterwards and bought you all of your favorite things. Rudbulls, pretzels, strawberries, cherry pepsi and chocolate. He even had the exorcists help him out with gifts and figuring out what he should get

"I'm really, really sorry,"

Moving onto the less angsty things with you being observant you probably get him quite a few things too like food, treats, and maybe an album or two from his favorite artists in heaven

He watches anime with you all the time (mostly for the... designs lets be honest) and will probably shout whenever there's some sort of plot twist saying that he 'saw it coming' when he probably didn't lets be honest here

"Oh FUCK yes!! I totally saw that! Did you see that? I saw it"

He also doesn't care at all with you being slightly greedy for money because quite honestly he's the same in some areas but that being said he will bug you for money if he ever runs out... or just doesn't want to spend his

You might have to get used to his music taste and him playing his guitar constantly as he does it every day at the worse times most likely. He tries not to but its almost like a skill at this point

You have to yell at him to stop if it really drives you crazy and he will in exchange for some kisses and cuddles

Speaking of cuddles he'll try and cuddle you daily. If you have down time? Cuddles. Work? Cuddles. Hard day? Cuddles. He'll find any reason to snuggle up with you

That also being said he likes to fold his wings around you in public just because he likes the gesture and he probably wants others to know that you're taken. (Someone hit on you once and he is NOT risking that again)

He notices that you melt when he holds your hand so he'll do it all the time grabbing it for no apparent reason and sometimes even kissing it just to see you get flustered or soften up

"You're so adorable y'know that right?"

One of the reasons he likes it is because he feels somewhat in control or that he's doing something right in his relationship which honestly says a lot since eve and lilith

He loves how hardworking you are and how you help out with the exorcists from time to time making sure that they don't get hurt and such

He'll tell you that you don't need to but you'll do it anyways to help them out

I'd also like to imagine that there are some exorcists like vaggie who have trauma from the exterminations themselves and you would talk to them and help them through it as the year goes on

Adam doesn't see the point in it but he won't question it saying that you can do whatever you want

Since you're 5'8 and shorter than him by quite a pick he'll pick you up bridal style and carry you around sometimes

Or when hugging you he'll squeeze you and pick you up and probably spin you around

I'd like to imagine that he also has some attachment issues so when you come back he's almost like a sick puppy waiting for you to come home

He'll wait for you for hours on end just at the door all grumpy until you come on over and give him a hug

He'll also sometimes end training early if he wants to see you

"Alright ladies wrap it up!"

You might get at him for this but he won't listen and will just turn on your favorite anime all the way up with a smug little grin on his face

When he didn't come back from his extermination Lute was the one who told you he was gone before storming off and calling the demons filth and names

You were devastated and wanted to make a grave in heaven for him but Sera declined for the longest time before finally agreeing saying that only those with special access could see it though since the people of heaven might suspect something

His grave ended up being put in a secluded area in a place that you could only visit a few times a week since Sera said that she didn't want anyone getting suspicious of where you were going

Mostly because as the souls in heaven are kind they still are flawed to some extent and might follow you around

You still help the exorcists every now and then but not as much since Lute's in charge now and she hardly lets you through saying that you can't be in there

Overall your relationship has its ups and downs but in the end you two are a very loving couple <3

Sk8 the Infinity ramble

You cannot convince me that Joe wasn't the first person to see the similaritiies between Langa and Adam

I understand that a comparison of Langa to Adam could earn quite a bit of backlash. I would like you to read my argument before you respond and understand the point I am arguing. I would not argue any similarities other than the ones here because there are none.

First off let's understand what Joe saw in the split between Joe, Cherry, and Adam.

Joe saw Adam's ambition and drive and desire to get better than should be humanly possible and saw how problematic this was. Joe saw Cherry being drawn in by Adam's talent and just being blown away. Joe saw how absolutely destroyed Cherry was when Adam left and was broken by Adam leaving as well. Joe likely felt as Reki did but likely also felt as if he had lost everything because of one person.

Now to compare them.

First: they both seem to just appear out of no where.

Adam coming from a sheltered home looking for an escape through skating. Then Langa coming from Canada with no background in skating.

Second: the ambition and drive.

When Adam comes along he has this need to be better than everyone and this competitive spirit that does nothing but bring others down and put him in a position slightly above them. He injures anyone who seems to pose any threat to him in their skating beef which later changes to him just trying to cause s much harm to the other skater as possible.

When Langa comes around he doesn't have this need to be better than everyone else, he has this need to just be the best he can be( similar to Miya but for different reasons). Langa doesn't want to bring pain unto others, he just wants to have fun, make friends, and enjoy the sport he loves. However, a want to be better than you are can easily, from an outsider's point of view, be confused with a need to be better than everyone else.

Third: Relationships

Adam had Joe and Cherry. They were extremely close as depicted through out season 1 in the flashbacks. Then Adam's ambition got the better of him. He got too violent in his skating and then he just left, leaving behind his friends, escapism, and an entire life.

Langa, on the other hand, has Reki(and later Miya but this comparison will use Reki more than Miya). Reki and Langa are extremely close, spending almost every hour of the day together, almost never leaving one another's sides. In Langa's case, it wasn't ambition that got in the way but giftedness. Reki is good at skating but Langa, well, Langa is Langa. Langa is good at basically any sport he can get his hands on as we see him excelling in snowboarding, skating, and then football. This time, rather than one person being the problem that splits the relationship, it's miscommunication.

Conclusion: I'm going to be plain and simple with this. Joe was the one who saw these similarities because he saw that the bond between Langa and Reki was extremely similar to the bond between Adam and Cherry. He, likely out of a feeling of protection and a want to prevent what had happened with Adam, keeps an eye on Langa and when necessary, Joe is the one who gives the best advice to both Reki and Langa. Joe saw these similarities from the beginning and, after watching Langa closely, realized that Langa was not going to go down the same path as Adam because unlike Adam, Langa was driven by a need to improve himself, have fun, and make friends.

While these similarities between Langa and Adam could have been seen by Cherry, since Cherry had the view of Adam in a way that is similar to Reki's view of Langa, he didn't see part that serves as the most important distinction, relationships.
