As the water and soil on Earth fill with bits of plastic, our waking dream is that each of us will examine and reduces our use of plastics. Detail of ‘Embrace’, 20”x22”, acrylic on maple panel 2017 for my latest show Spectrum at Joshua Liner Gallery in NYC (swipe to see full painting) I often think of salamanders as the ‘canary in the coal mine’ ~ indicator species provide a barometer for the health of our environment. I made this piece as 1/4 of my synchronized movement series, after witnessing a hopeful scene of Ensatina’s embracing each other in a mating ball aka Amplexus. Aesthetically inspired by minimalist Japanese Aquascaping, I experimented with shadow and highlights following the pattern in the grain of wood. Ensatina’s literally ‘crawling out of the woodwork’ down the steps in the grain to mate in a receding shallow pond of floating duckweed aqua plants. The decline in amphibian populations has been widely publicized yet these secretive salamanders deserve more attention and protection as they are intrinsically valuable and important to the health of our eco-system. Regrann from @esoterikka - ‼️IMPORTANT‼️ please read🙏🏽 Did you know... 90% of the food people of Hawaii eat is imported. 80% of the food grown here is exported. #Maui is losing #farmland at an alarming rate. Thousands of acres of #sugarcane land are already slated for development. This means Maui is on its way to becoming the next Honolulu... The Hawaii state constitution declares “the state shall #CONSERVE and #PROTECT agricultural land, promote diversified agriculture, increase agriculture self sufficiency and assure the availability of agriculturally #sustainable lands.” What is being done here is simply unconstitutional. The Central Valley water table is contaminated by years of #conventional sugar cane farming using toxic chemicals such as #atrazine. The current agricultural model moves food and profits off island while degrading #ecologicalhealth. The #Honu (sea turtles) have developed deadly tumors which I’ve seen cover their heads and fins. Honu are #indicatorspecies, meaning that their health reflects the health of the #ecosystem. We can expect that when they are dying, so are our #reefs and other oceanic life, and our human health is most definitely at risk. It has been proven that these tumors are caused by #chemicalfertilizers and #pesticide runoff from conventional farming.. • So what can we do? First and foremost, we can convert large farmland into #COMMUNITYOWNED farmland. We can stop commercial developments on prime land with #COMMUNITY stewardship, preventing further conversion of precious farmland into developments. We can transition into diversified organic and regenerative agriculture. #Regenerativeagriculture is truly #sustainable. It builds #soilmicrobes and soil health with each crop cycle. We can feed #Maui and ALL of #Hawaii. This is a process of creating food self sufficiency rather than focusing on exporting crops. So now I’m trying to figure out how to obtain this land. I want to know how many of you are interested in living communally on land in which we produce food sustainably for the highest good of ALL? - #hawaii #maui #community #health #environment (at Maui)
