I would really like some input from people, preferably vision impaired people, but any people with disabilities that can change how you view/see things in general is good. [ie like folks with light sensitivity, contrast issues, migraines, etc]
On my website, I want to not only make my website itself accessible, I'd really like to make a few pages specifically first and foremost for blind and vision impaired people... so I'd like to learn as much as I can about things that folks who struggle with navigating the internet visually.
My idea is since a lot of websites are vision-first and have minimal accessibility whether or not the websites are good or coded well, they often feel like after the fact accessibility features so I thought it'd be nice to try to create a unique and fun experience for vision impaired people, as well as try to figure out a way to make a good middle ground between fun and accessible for both blind people and those who can see but struggle with things like flashing colors, contrast issues, etc...
So ontop of working on responsiveness, accessibility, and what not.. I just think it'd be both interesting and nice, to try to create some kind of experience for vision impaired people that can feel more robust and fleshed out, without feeling like an after thought… cause even some of the most accessibly friendly sites I've seen, I hear they still leave a lot to the imagination and can be really annoying for folks with impaired vision to go through.. because almost everything is geared towards sighted people first at best, and sighted people only at worst.
so I'm wondering if creating a section of my website[or maybe even eventually and entire separate website] first and foremost for folks with vision impairment [primarily focusing on those who need screen readers] is something that sounds fun or interesting to folks? and if so, what things would people want to be able to explore/interact with/etc..
and of course, how can I make said page / pages accessible AND fun.
I was blatantly told that this idea was ableist[and that I must be bad at coding to want to make a separate page/experience for blind people?? I feel they just misunderstood me but I want to add this part in case folks have insight or opinions specifically on ableism and accessibility in webdev], and so I also would like input on that SPECIFICALLY only from folks who use screen readers and/or are blind. I want to make sure I am doing things in a way that is inclusive and I want to try and help with spreading info on accessibility and inclusiveness in personal sites and indie webdev.

portfiend's oc directory template
three weeks ago i began work on a little Eleventy-based website template for storing character information akin to Toyhou.se. it's been in a releasable state for about a week, but i've also been pushing updates to it near daily!
i also wrote up a quick tutorial for setting up the project on its download page, but i plan to improve it in the future.
click here to preview this template: NeoCities click here to get the code: GitHub
features:
built-in "namespaces" for characters, locations, and stories, with their own page templates and information card formats
uses eleventy's tagging system to allow you to tag pages for fine categorization
a big focus on linking to other pages. each "creative" page lets you navigate between the previous/next item in the category. pages have a "linked pages" list that allow you to navigate to related pages, including "what links here"
a content filtering system allowing developers to hide/blur certain content from people who have not opted into it. optionally supports needing to click an "i am 18+" box before entering the site
lightbox images; clickable image links that can reveal metadata such as captions and artist credits
tabbed views allow you to view specific sections of content at a time, used in the various creative pages
SASS wrapper for optional better-formatted stylesheets. don't know how to use SASS syntax? SASS also supports regular CSS!
this project is licensed under MIT License.

IndieSeas - an indie web search engine
This website was created by a talented friend of mine, Poyo (https://poy.ooo/). You're able to search through thousands of indexed sites using the main search function, discover a random new personal site through the random button, and browse through 'The Gallery™' which is home to thousands of 88x31 buttons belonging to members indexed. You can sort buttons by colour, and individually search for buttons using the text search option. It's a great project and I highly recommend you check it out

A disgruntled Tumblrina (gender-neutral) made a website and why you should too.
Or "reject social media, return to personal websites".
PART 1: THE PART WHERE I CONVINCE YOU TO MOVE TO PERSONAL WEBSITES
So, the Web 2.0 social media infested landscape seems to be crumbling before our very eyes. Reddit's leadership is increasingly greedy, Twitter is sinking under the weight of Elon's massive, yet increasingly fragile ego, Tumblr is slowly turning into another lifeless corpo-fest, complete with the layout, Instagram continues to be vapid and soulless and Facebook seems to be going the way of MySpace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(feel free to check the alt text on these, btw)
In these troubling times, where everything looks the same and you're expected to be milked for every dollar you're worth, what is a disgruntled Internet surfer such as yourself to do? Move to an untested alternative that's bound to get overrun by fascists thanks to poor moderation? Stay the course on the sinking ships you're used to?
Well, what if I told you that we've solved this problem way back in the 90's and early 2000's and were merely duped by the Big Zuck into forgetting our legacy? What if there was a cure for the sanitized, dull social media hellscape?
Tumblr media
It takes a bit of work, when compared to just using a social media site, but even if your particular use case makes switching difficult (ex. an artist looking to promote their work), it's still a good secondary option to consider.
The core appeal is the ability to customize and individualize, make a corner of cyberspace unabashedly yours,
It can also be an exciting avenue of creative expression, giving whatever you want to say a unique coat of paint,
Most website hosting services are a bit more lax about what you can do on them, due to changes in the profit structure (rather than depending on advertisers and investors, they either have a premium option to give supporters perks, have another product, or, in the case of paid services, you renting that space IS the product),
If you want your website to be more accomodating and accessible, you don't have to file tons of feedback - do it yourself,
If you'd like to connect with other webmasters and promote each other's websites, we have webrings - sets of circular links that connect websites with something in common, be it a topic, aesthetic or friend group,
You're less likely to have your stuff purged by an ill-advised change in policy (especially if you have a backup of your files somewhere),
The more people do it, the less power those massive social media corpos have over the internet,
It can be a load of fun!
If I have you convinced, keep reading into part 2. If you just wanna see what I did, skip to part 3. If neither, feel free to continue scrolling. I won't hold it against you. You'll be missing out, that's all.
PART 2: SO, YOU WANNA MAKE A WEBSITE!
Good choice, here's some resources!
sadgrl's absolute beginner's guide to Neocities - what it says on the tin!
W3Schools - a more in-depth tutorial site, a learning resource so excellent it substituted for what I was supposed to learn in technical highschool (because our teacher just told us to go on W3Schools instead of teaching us shit)
A list of free layouts for your website - whether to use as a base to learn from or to simply take for yourself,
Neocities - the posterchild for free website hosting for personal websites. Doesn't allow video or audio, but you can get around that by linking those files from elsewhere. Beginner-friendly to a fault - once you have an account just drag and drop your files in,
Gitlab (& Gitlab Pages) - a more advanced option, but it has a few advantages of its own. Gitlab is a website hoster second and a version control service first - which is programmer speak for "keeps track of changes in your code and stores a backup of it online". it helps a lot when working on multiple devices or co-writing with a friend. And secondly, you can use Gitlab Actions to automate putting your website up (even on Neocities, like I do!)
My askbox - I am not joking, if you have any questions about any of this, I'd love nothing more than to help you out!
But with most of my indie web propaganda out of the way, it's time.
PART 3: Welcome to Timewatcher OS.
Tumblr media
Of course, because I couldn't be normal when it comes to making a website, I had to turn it into a fake operating system. Each subpage is an "app", opened in a separate embed window. It has unlockable wallpapers (no pay2win, prommy). There's bideo games on it! I even made a music player for it so I can share my incongruent music tastes!
Like I said in my Tumblr bio, if I ever go radio silent for more than a month, it means I've gotten fed up with this hellsite and moved to my own homepage permamently. And I highly advise you make an option like this for yourself too! Lastly, if any of y'all would like to start a webring, do let me know in the askbox - I'm down to manage it if I'm not alone in there.
Anyways, I hope I convinced you to make a website, or at least check out some of the cool sites you've been missing out on! Hope to see you on the Old Web!

I was busy running around with our partner today, so I quickly bashed together an archive of our ( @sabre-tooth ) "Essential Sabretooth" comic recap/guide for today's Daily HTML project.

Hey neocities community! I'm a freelance illustrator and game artist dipping my toes into web design for the first time. My ambition is to create a portfolio site with a point-and-click game vibe, using the most simple code I can put together. I would love to create a unique space that feels interactive and endlessly exploreable. The site will feature my various art projects, and there are already some (small) playable games up for download. I'm aiming to add more animated elements later down the line, but I'm currently learning the ropes of html and the site is still very bare bones. For now, please enjoy the fun visuals of my cave as I continue digging the tunnels deeper and deeper..
These are some of my current goals i'm seeking more resources/tutorials for: -Find a suitable way to add buttons and text on an image -Play animations when hovering and on button press -Layering images -Create a photo gallery with filters/tags in the style of the site -Make the site more accessible and scale everything consistently -Build a simple dressup game using drag and drop pngs -Find a new guestbook host, as 123guestbook.com is going away
