I started this over a year ago and came back to it periodically, but I decided to just finally finish it. It’s morphed, undone itself, and transformed many times in the process of illustrating it. Sincerely, I considered giving up on the piece. I am glad I didn’t despite its awkwardness; I admit that it doesn’t sit in the eye well. But somehow I feel that it suits the piece and what it means.

I am, if anything, relieved to have finished an illustration finally. It’s been nearly eight months since my last. Prints are available in my shop. (I also have mini prints for $5cad/$3.40usd!)

Build a bug garden! This means planting bug-friendly plants and going out to water them every day, seeing what bugs you can attract! Decorate a plastic jar as a “bug home” with fake grass, paper bugs, etc. Sing songs like "The Ants Go Marching" or "I'm Bringing Home a Baby Bumblebee." Make themed snacks like “ants on a log” (celery + PB + raisins) or gummy worms in pudding “dirt.”

What You Need:

Celery sticks (or apple slices if you don’t like celery)

Peanut butter (or SunButter for nut-free)

Raisins

How to Make:

Spread peanut butter into the groove of the celery stick.

Place raisins on top in a row — these are your “ants”!

Eat like a hungry ant.

🦋 2. Butterfly Snack Bags

What You Need:

Zip-top snack bag

Clothespin

Pipe cleaner

Snacks like grapes, pretzels, crackers, or gummies

How to Make:

Fill each side of the bag with a different snack (makes the wings).

Pinch the center with a clothespin to divide the two sides.

Twist a pipe cleaner around the top of the clothespin for antennae.

Ta-da! A butterfly you can eat.

🐝 3. Banana Bumblebees

What You Need:

Banana

Peanut butter or cream cheese

Chocolate chips or raisins

How to Make:

Slice banana into chunks.

Spread a thin stripe of PB or cream cheese around the middle like a bee stripe.

Add chocolate chips for eyes or stripes.

🐞 4. Ladybug Crackers

What You Need:

Round crackers (like Ritz)

Cream cheese or hummus

Cherry tomatoes or strawberries

Black olives (or mini chocolate chips for sweet)

How to Make:

Spread cream cheese or hummus on the cracker.

Cut cherry tomato or strawberry in half for the wings.

Add olive pieces (or chips) as spots and eyes!

🐛 5. Gummy Worm Dirt Cups

What You Need:

Chocolate pudding

Crushed chocolate cookies (like Oreos)

Gummy worms

How to Make:

Spoon pudding into a cup.

Sprinkle crushed cookies on top to look like dirt.

Add gummy worms poking out!
