How Universal is Your Translator?

Plenty of sci-fi has automatic translators that pretty much instantly allow communication between species that have never met before (or at least that's the impression I get if translation is not mentioned explicitly).

So for Universes where such a magical device exists - how far does it go? Does it have a certain threshold for it to recognize something as an intelligent form of communication? Or ones that do so through other means, such as subtle bioluminescence, or pheromones, can the device even pick up telepathic speech? And what about creatures like parrots, who mimic intelligent speech, but perhaps don't understand what they're saying beyond - this sound makes food appear?

Basically what I'm asking - can you establish bilateral diplomatic relations with an ant colony?

Elephants call out to each other using individual names that they invent for their fellow pachyderms, a study said on Monday. While dolphins and parrots have been observed addressing each other by mimicking the sound of others from their species, elephants are the first non-human animals known to use names that do not involve imitation, the researchers suggested. For the new study, a team of international researchers used an artificial intelligence algorithm to analyse the calls of two wild herds of African savannah elephants in Kenya. The research "not only shows that elephants use specific vocalisations for each individual, but that they recognise and react to a call addressed to them while ignoring those addressed to others," lead study author Michael Pardo said. "This indicates that elephants can determine whether a call was intended for them just by hearing the call, even when out of its original context," the behavioural ecologist at Colorado State University said in a statement.

oh geeze, thanks! 💚💚💚 I'm really glad people enjoy my stupid sense of humor; mostly I just draw things to make myself laugh, and if it makes other people laugh too, then bonus points! usually it's just one joke or mental image that gets stuck in my head (every time I saw Fellow spin his cane, all I could think about was him go-go-gadgeting away on it...) and in my quest to justify it, it picks up other jokes and bits along the way and usually doesn't even end up as the main focus anymore. entire narrative arcs have spun out just so I could use a single bad pun in a throwaway line. this is a terrible way to explain it but I'm not sure how else to put it into words!
