forever tired of our voices being turned into commodity.
forever tired of thorough medaocrity in the AAC business. how that is rewarded. How it fails us as users. how not robust and only robust by small small amount communication systems always chosen by speech therapists and funded by insurance.
forever tired of profit over people.
forever tired of how companies collect data on every word we’ve ever said and sell to people.
forever tired of paying to communicate. of how uninsured disabled people just don’t get a voice many of the time. or have to rely on how AAC is brought into classrooms — which usually is managed to do in every possible wrong way.
forever tired of the branding and rebranding of how we communicate. Of this being amazing revealation over and over that nonspeakers are “in there” and should be able to say things. of how every single time this revelation comes with pre condition of leaving the rest behind, who can’t spell or type their way out of the cage of ableist oppression. or are not given chance & resources to. Of the branding being seen as revolution so many times and of these companies & practitioners making money off this “revolution.” of immersion weeks and CRP trainings that are thousands of dollars and wildly overpriced letterboards, and of that one nightmare Facebook group g-d damm it. How this all is put in language of communication freedom. 26 letters is infinite possibilities they say - but only for the richest of families and disabled people. The rest of us will have to live with fewer possibilities.
forever tired of engineer dads of AAC users who think they can revolutionize whole field of AAC with new terrible designed apps that you can’t say anything with them. of minimally useful AI features that invade every AAC app to cash in on the new moment and not as tool that if used ethically could actually help us, but as way of fixing our grammar our language our cultural syntax we built up to sound “proper” to sound normal. for a machine, a large language model to model a small language for us, turn our inhuman voices human enough.
forever tired of how that brand and marketing is never for us, never for the people who actually use it to communicate. it is always for everyone around us, our parents and teachers paras and SLPs and BCBAs and practitioners and doctors and everyone except the person who ends up stuck stuck with a bad organized bad implemented bad taught profit motivated way to talk. of it being called behavior problems low ability incompetence noncompliance when we don’t use these systems.
you all need to do better. We need to democritize our communication, put it in our own hands. (My friend & communication partner who was in Occupy Wall Street suggested phrase “Occupy AAC” and think that is perfect.) And not talking about badly made non-robust open source apps either. Yes a robust system needs money and recources to make it well. One person or community alone cannot turn a robotic voice into a human one. But our human voice should not be in hands of companies at all.
(this is about the Tobii Dynavox subscription thing. But also exploitive and capitalism practices and just lazy practices in AAC world overall. Both in high tech “ mainstream “ AAC and methods that are like ones I use in sense that are both super stigmatized and also super branded and marketed, Like RPM and S2C and spellers method. )

Joe Swanberg on the Making of 'Drinking Buddies'
WRITER’S NOTE: This article was written back in 2013. Filmmaker Joe Swanberg has been a major figure in the Mumblecore movement, a subgenre of American independent film which is characterized by low budget production values and naturalistic dialogue. Among his films is “Hannah Takes the Stairs” which stars Greta Gerwig and was actually shot without a script. The way Swanberg works, he gives his…

being into phonetics in a way that makes it like. mildly distressing sometimes to hold back about ranting about it is so weird because like. literally i understand by my basic foundational knowledge of phonetics that babies start out being able to recognize even miniscule differences in speech sounds but then in order to efficiently process language quickly as they develop language theyre learning to pattern make and subconciously understand what features they can group together or ignore until it begins to approximate a phonemic inventory of their first language(s)
so like of course people are so constantly going to be so incredibly wrong about what sounds they're hearing and get orthography and phonemes mixed up with what sound is precisely being produced like i Know that as someone so into this stuff. but also it makes me feel soooo insane because this just creates so many situations where im so so antsy wanting to really get in the weeds of it even if i really dont have the energy to

Photos from Facebook from a guy who teaches a storm class here in Oklahoma.
Wrapping up Twisters opening weekend with one more behind the scenes memory.
In April, 2023, we were approached by the Twisters production office about doing a storm spotter class for the cast and crew. As we talked about the class, I asked them if they wanted 1) a storm spotter class; 2) a weather class with info to help actors with their roles in the movie; or 3) a tornado safety class to help everyone new to Oklahoma in springtime. The answer was yes - we want all three.
On May 3rd, 2023, we hosted nine of the cast and nine crew members for the training. It didn't really have a name, but I've heard someone refer to it as Tornado Bootcamp or Tornadoes 101. We started around 8am and it lasted two hours.
I covered Oklahoma tornado culture to illustrate how big of a deal tornadoes are to the people who live here, covering everything from Saturday siren tests to IPAs named after weather terms to TV meteorologist drinking games and bingo cards to storm anxiety and PTSD. I talked about the Twister effect, which saw meteorology school enrollments double or triple in some cases after Twister came out. I did some basic storm spotter training and a little severe weather meteorology, and wrapped up with tornado safety (including a slide illustrating how it was not safe to shelter under a wooden bridge or by strapping yourself to a pipe using screen grabs from Twister.)
The class was very interactive. Daisy Edgar Jones and Glen Powell sat front row center and Daisy had her notebook and took notes the entire time. I got really good questions from the class and I could tell they were genuinely interested.
We followed up the class with an extended tour/visit to SPC and the WFO, with a lot more great questions and discussion. We ended the visit talking vehicles and technology with Sean Waugh. I think some of them would have stayed all day if they had been able to.

You know what I hate about modern mice? how pointlessly anti-repair they are. I have had plenty of mice break over time, and often it's just that some fluff or skin-flakes got wedged in the mouse wheel or under the buttons. You just need to open them up and clean them. Except.. where are the screws?
Tumblr media
OH THERE THEY ARE. under the little skid-pads, which cannot be put back on once you take them off, because the adhesive has been ruined! You have to buy replacement pads, if they're available, and maybe cut them down to size, as well as clean off the residue of the previous pads.
You know how this problem could be fixed? JUST DON'T PUT THE PADS ON TOP OF THE SCREWS!
Then you'd have no problem. Easy to disassemble and clean.
But then it'd look 5% uglier because apparently people are scared of seeing screws, and also people might not just throw it out and buy a new one!
It's the terrible sort of weird planned obsolescence that happens as an almost accidental side effect of improving the product. Like, ball mice? They were designed to be disassembled. You didn't even need a screwdriver! Because you had to clean them regularly, or they'd gunk up too fast. Modern optical mice? They still get gunked up, the buttons and wheel still die eventually. They can be cleaned and repaired. But now that it's not required for all of them to be cleaned regularly, that function has been removed. they're designed to be disposable.
The same thing happened with TVs way back when. If you open up a TV from the 50s (or just look at the back, honestly, many of them were designed to be always-open), you'll find a schematic showing where all the tubes are and what models they are. Was this because the 1950s was a golden era of reparability? NO! it's because they burnt out all the time and you had to replace them! As soon as TVs got reliable enough that replacing tubes was no longer needed, the schematics became hidden behind paywalls and for authorized-service-personnel-only.
It would be only a minor change in aesthetics to make your mouse repairable/cleanable. Hell, most of the time when it's not simply fixed by cleaning it, it's because one of these broke:
Tumblr media
This is an Omron D2FC-F-7N microswitch, used in a bunch of mice. It's designed to last about a million clicks. With a soldering iron and some solder (like 25$ on amazon) you can trivially replace it. New switches cost between like 10 cents and 2 dollars, depending where you buy it and how many you want. A couple bucks of parts and half an hour's worth of work, you can repair a 40$ mouse that's "died".
But they make it unnecessarily hard with the slide-pads being unreplacable. You have to find ones that match, you have to carefully clean off the old residue with IPA, or the new ones you just bought will fall off. All to make it look SLIGHTLY better (how often are you looking at the aesthetics of the bottom of your mouse, exactly? (no furries are allowed to answer this question!)) and maybe, just maybe, to push it over into "not worth it". You could do all that, but you have to buy new switches, new slide-pads/mouse-feet (SHUT UP FURRIES), and can you remember where your solder even is? you last used it when you were trying to fix that keyboard...
Basically one thing that is maddening to anyone with the very basics of electronic knowledge (seriously: the amount of skill you need for this is the kind you can get in less than an hour from watching a youtube tutorial) that we're surrounded by all this electrical nonsense that will break and have to be thrown out, but is mostly breaking in ways that could be fixed in a very short amount of time with relatively little work.
It's infuriating to go on amazon to buy another damn mouse and it pop up "hey you last bought this in 2021, you fool" and you're like I KNOW, IT SHOULD STILL BE WORKING TODAY!
I have computer parts from the 80s in my room right now that are still working when stuff made in the last 5 years is already dying! There's no reason it should be this way. It's an endless waste of time and money and resources and it's just to make some logitech or whoever executives slightly richer.
It's deeply bullshit. The modern day is going to be identifiable as the geological layer where most of the trash was generated. We're living in the middle of the quisquiliarumferous period: the layer of garbage.

You Scare Me, Professor: Chapter 39
Tumblr media
Summary: The reader is taking graduate classes at a local university in the wooded upstate New York. She is drawn to her professor, Dr. Joel Miller, though she is also inherently aware that he has something dark about him that she can't quite put her finger on. As the reader's attraction grows deeper, she has to decide whether to endure the danger or run away as fast as possible.
Pairing: Professor Joel Miller x f!reader
The lodge was buzzing. The big, open area was lined with rows of long tables, accompanied by high top tables on the ends. Down one end a group of guys was singing a cheery song that I had never heard before, but it made me smile. People of all ages, all clad in winter hats and hoodies, were slung about in small groups having a good time.
“Beers all around?” Carol asked, once the four of us were seated at a high top table by the bar.
After the elegant night at the winery, and bumping into Carol and Will before they went to the strings concert, I loved that Carol easily slipped into the more casual scene and could sling back beers on a whim. I was really looking forward to getting to know her better.
Dr. Miller rose to his feet and reached into the back pocket of his jeans for his wallet. When Will went to stand along with him, he motioned for him to sit. “Everything is on me tonight. What’re we drinking?”
“I saw a beer on tap as I passed by called Road to Ruin,” Carol explained, “I have to try that one.”
“Which means we may be on the road to ruin,” Will joked with a laugh. “A Miller Lite is fine for me.”
Dr. Miller looked at me with a smirk and a subtle wink. I smiled at him. “What kind of beer is the Road to Ruin?” I asked, glancing at Carol.
“It’s a double IPA.” She made a guilty face and looked to Will, who smirked and shook his head.
“I’ll try it,” I said to Dr. Miller.
“Two Roads and two Millers.” He motioned to himself and Carol. It took a second for it to click as he added, “I’ve got more Dad jokes up my sleeve.”
“That’s why I’m getting the Road to Ruin,” his sister joked.
When Dr. Miller went to retrieve our beers at the bar, Carol focused her attention on me. “My brother really seems to adore you.”
“Oh.” I smiled and raised my eyebrows, feeling my cheeks grow hot. I wished I had a drink to hide behind. “Yeah.. I.. I feel the same way.” I was so awkward and I couldn't hide it.
“Honey, don't embarrass the poor girl,” Will put a hand on her forearm with a chuckle.
“I'm just saying,” Carol went on. “You both seem very happy.”
“We are.” I gave a nod and a smile I couldn't contain. “I've never met someone like Joel.” When I sighed out loud, both of them gave a laugh and my cheeks reddened some more. “How was the concert last night on campus?”
“It was very nice.” Carol looked to Will and then back to me. “Elizabeth was one of those students you’ll always remember. She even came back to help out with building our school’s drama club set this year. They spent hours, probably too late most nights, working on all that.”
“Great kid,” Will added.
“What drama production are you guys putting on?” I asked.
“Legally Blonde,” they said at the same time, making Carol chuckle.
“I keep having to chase that little dog around the auditorium, nightly,” Will said with an eye roll and a smirk. “This one’s been eating her dinners alone a few times a week.”
“I’m a big girl, I can handle it.”
Dr. Miller returned, barely able to carry all four beers, which so happened to be in oversized, frosty mugs. “They asked if I wanted the sixteen ounce or twenty-two ounce beers.” He gave a shrug, “I didn’t think anyone would oppose the twenty-two.”
“Certainly not,” Will said with a nod, reaching for the one Dr. Miller slid in his direction.
“Should we toast?” I asked, gently raising my glass just a few inches off the table at first.
“To Carol and Will,” Dr. Miller raised his glass before anyone could intervene, “May you have the long, happy life together.” He added, glancing at Will, “And to gaining a brother.”
“Amen.” Will tapped his glass against Dr. Miller’s and then mine and eventually Carol’s.
“Amen.” She smiled wide and that same warmth and happiness radiated out of her when she looked at her husband-to-be. “Should we get drunk and fool around?” She asked him, prompting Dr. Miller to plug his ears as if he was twelve years old.
I laughed out loud and Will snickered and shook his head.
“And she’s not even drunk yet,” he said with a laugh.
“Maybe I should’ve gone with the sixteen ounce,” Dr. Miller said, shaking his head with a smile.
“Are you going to do any skiing before the wedding?” Carol asked us.
Dr. Miller extended an arm across the back of the chair and grinned. He glanced at me and then back to his sister. “Possibly some snow tubing.”
“Safer.” She sipped her beer, “Good choice.”
“And are you two going to risk breaking a leg on the slopes between now and Saturday?” He asked them.
“We’re going to skip the black diamond,” Will said, joking around. “But we may take a few runs down the slopes tomorrow.”
“Risky business.” Dr. Miller brought the beer to his lips.
“It’s in our genes,” Carol reminded him.
“I would have to agree,” I chimed in with a shrug, “I mean, you started dating me.”
Carol gave a laugh. “I wasn’t going to say anything.” She purposely looked away and then back right away.
“Already the women side with each other,” Will said, pretending to be exasperated as he shook his head.
“Happy wife, happy life,” Carol reminded him with a little wink.
“Yes, dear.”
The night was fun and lowkey. Dr. Miller went up to get several rounds of beers for the group, denying each person who tried to jump in and pay, myself included.
The same group of guys down the end that had been singing earlier got the entire room singing Sweet Caroline when it came over the speakers from someone’s jukebox request. It was one of those nights that got sillier and sillier and sillier.
I hadn’t been drunk in quite awhile, but I began to feel the effects of the alcohol and found myself singing along, swaying and holding Carol’s hand as we pumped our fists in the air to the, ‘Ba, ba, ba’ part of the song.
Honestly, I had never seen Dr. Miller so carefree since I’d known him. It was refreshing and rejuvenating to be a part of such a cheery, upbeat atmosphere. All the tenseness from the week had all but vanished. And it felt amazing.
When we finally cashed out and decided to call it a night, we exchanged hugs all around. I turned to Dr. Miller and gave a him a firm kiss on the lips when his sister and Will had rounded out of the lodge.
“You’re not ready to call it a night, yet, are you?” He asked.
I smirked at him. “What do you have in mind?”
Dr. Miller eyed an oversized clock on the wall. “We have about forty-five minutes-”
“Until what?” I interrupted, largely because of the buzzed feeling that left my filter flying out the window.
He laughed a boyish laugh. “Let’s get our coats.”
“And then what?”
“And then I’ll show you.” He held out a hand and led me back up to the room. We bundled up quickly, despite my several silly attempts to seduce him, and then I let him lead me out into the night.
“Thirty minute warning,” a worker with a bright, red jacket informed us as we made our way toward the thinning crowd on the slopes.
“Where’s the tubing hill?” Dr. Miller asked.
The man extended an arm, “Take that lift up right over there.”
“Thanks.”
“Oh, no.” I smiled and laughed as he towed me toward the station to retrieve a pair of snow tubes. We then made our way toward the lift.
When we got there, Dr. Miller helped me onto the seat with a one, two, three and then we were being raised into the cold, mountain air.
“Wow.” I soaked it in. “I’ve never even been on a ski lift. How do we get off?”
“We kind of.. glide and run.”
“Great.” I laughed again. “You may have to catch me.”
“Always.” Dr. Miller continued to stare in my direction until I turned back to him so we could share a kiss.
“Thank you,” I said.
“For what?”
“For one of the funnest nights.. ever.” It was all I could come up with at the moment and we laughed together.
“It has been fun,” he agreed.
When we got close, he motioned up ahead. “Alright, we have to kind of just jump off and pepper your feet as you go so you don’t fall.’
“I’ll try.”
“Ready?”
“Nope!”
The bar raised and I giggled as he helped me off, stumbling as we went onto the snow. Neither of us fell, but it was hardly graceful.
“Wow, okay!” I reset. I was ready. “Now what?”
“Come on over.” Another man in a red jacket waved us on and we wandered down over toward him. “You can go side by side in these two lanes if you want.”
I could clearly see the man made snow lanes that had been made. They looked like giant, icy slides.
“Ready now?” Dr. Miller asked, taking the lead as he planted his tube and laid head first on top of it where the worker instructed him to do so.
I breathed out a wintery breath and laid down on my tube beside him. “What does the winner get?”
“What does the winner want?” Dr. Miller smirked at me.
“Beers or sex,” the young man butted in from behind us. When we both looked back at him he added, “That’s what people usually bet on up here.”
I let out a laugh and raised my eyebrows. “How about both?” I asked him.
“Sounds like a win-win,” Dr. Miller said.
“When you’re ready to go, just push yourself to the spray painted red line,” the worker explained, “ Once you’re past that, there’s no turning back.”
I walked myself up with my hands and feet, feeling like a turtle with an upside down shell. When I got to the faint line, I glanced over at Dr. Miller. “Should we count to three?”
“One..” He began, “Two..” There was a dramatic pause and I finally cracked a smile. “Three!”

Was tagged by @lhenn Starting a new thread 'cause that one might get too long.
Thanks for tagging! Yeah, it took me 9 days to answer, could be worse... (I really like things like this, it's only lack of time, if I don't reply 😊)
Eggs: omelette... sort of. With little milk (so it isn't too runny) and lots of cheese! Also herbs, spices (just what I have at hand) and sometimes bacon\ham\sausage pieces.
Steak: medium would do for me, I guess. Not sure I had enough good steaks in my life... I'd have one, for sure!
Milk: 2% or 3,2 % cow milk. I like milk, yes! I also like flavored milk, ice cream and most dairy products.
Alcohol: vinho verde is love! That's Portuguese wine from a really rainy region of the same name. The grapes are usually picked when they are not quite ripe yet (or else they might get mouldy), so the wine is usually really fresh and sour, a bit sparkling. Im a huge fan of it.
Or anything close to it (like Mateus or some wines from Lisboa)
Also any other kind of more or less good sparkling wine, preferably pink, brut or demi-sec, but not (semi)sweet.
Or some good beer, I love IPA and dark strong ale.
Warm drink: Herbal or black tea.
tagging @catcas22 @katyspersonal @sheirukitriesfandom @bimbomcgee @katastronoot @karpachev @heraldofcrow @fantomette22
And anyone who'd like to join!
No pressure, as always, but I'd love to read your replies.
