As cameras becomes more normalized (Sarah Bernhardt encouraging it, grifters on the rise, young artists using it), I wanna express how I will never turn to it because it fundamentally bores me to my core. There is no reason for me to want to use cameras because I will never want to give up my autonomy in creating art. I never want to become reliant on an inhuman object for expression, least of all if that object is created and controlled by manufacturing companies. I paint not because I want a painting but because I love the process of painting. So even in a future where everyone’s accepted it, I’m never gonna sway on this.
if i have to explain to you that using a camera to take a picture is not the same as using generative ai to generate an image then you are a fucking moron.
#ask me#anon#no more patience for this#i've heard this for the past 2 years#“an object created and controlled by companies” anon the company cannot barge into your home and take your camera away#or randomly change how it works on a whim. you OWN the camera that's the whole POINT#the entire point of a camera is that i can control it and my body to produce art. photography is one of the most PHYSICAL forms of artmakin#you have to communicate with your space and subjects and be conscious of your position in a physical world.#that's what makes a camera a tool. generative ai (if used wholesale) is not a tool because it's not an implement that helps you#do a task. it just does the task for you. you wouldn't call a microwave a “tool”#but most importantly a camera captures a REPRESENTATION of reality. it captures a specific irreproducible moment and all its data#read Roland Barthes: Studium & Punctum#generative ai creates an algorithmic IMITATION of reality. it isn't truth. it's the average of truths.#while conceptually that's interesting (if we wanna get into media theory) but that alone should tell you why a camera and ai aren't the sam#ai is incomparable to all previous mediums of art because no medium has ever solely relied on generative automation for its creation#no medium of art has also been so thoroughly constructed to be merged into online digital surveillance capitalism#so reliant on the collection and commodification of personal information for production#if you think using a camera is “automation” you have worms in your brain and you need to see a doctor#if you continue to deny that ai is an apparatus of tech capitalism and is being weaponized against you the consumer you're delusional#the fact that SO many tumblr lefists are ready to defend ai while talking about smashing the surveillance state is baffling to me#and their defense is always “well i don't engage in systems that would make me vulnerable to ai so if you own an apple phone that's on you”#you aren't a communist you're just self-centered

The top speedrunning discourse for 2024 will revolve around whether deliberately arranging your world record attempts to coincide with predicted peaks in solar flare activity in the hope of performing otherwise-irreproducible skips due to the resulting radiation randomly flipping bits in memory should be considered RTA legal.

« Precise language surprises like a dancer's extra second of stillness in mid-air; word and experience come together in an irreproducible moment of epiphanic delight.
[...T]here is no question that precision is difficult to achieve. Imprecision is easier. Imprecision is available in a wide variety of attractive and user-friendly forms: clichés, abstractions and generalizations, jargon, passive constructions, hyperbole, sentimentality, and reassuring absolutes. Imprecision minimizes discomfort and creates a big, soft, hospitable place for all opinions; even the completely vacuous can find a welcome there. So the practice of precision not only requires attentiveness and effort; it may also require the courage to afflict the comfortable and, consequently, tolerate their resentment. »

Entrancing Omatidian. Full screen this kids. Very small fly, head about the size of the head of a pin. Unsure of species. An illuminated photobition of how lovely fly eyes can be, the eye color alone is humanly irreproducable, if you look closely you can see our camera lens in each of the facets of its eyes. We took this one with a 10x microscope lens on the end of a 200ml lens.

reposting a thread here from twt on my interpretation of ivan and love because why not
ivan so beautiful when you consider his love a proof of self. wym his love for till can be seen as an attempt to abstract value from suffering. wym he calls it shallow in the sense that ivan views it as inherently selfish
ivan being pragmatic by nature and achieving through observation and replication as he cannot naturally "feel" his way through interpersonal relationships and express a true "self". he holds many things in concept "do you like anybody" "i wouldn't know what closeness entails"
i wouldn't say that ivan dislikes sua, only the concept of her. because if someone of the same exact disposition, the same exact variables, manages an irreproducible love then the fault lies in the self: it is an admittance of being fundamentally broken and "different"
that is why he finds superiority over sua when he finds out of her plans of sacrifice: her love is just as selfish as his. it's ok if they're BOTH freaks it's just not ok to be the ONLY freak. i do not think it's an envy of mizi's reciprocation note how he comments on her eyes
and how they had a light that disturbed him. she already found simple joy from the broken environment they were both brought forth from. "I should've been nicer" is just ivan realizing how selfish it is trivialize other people for experiencing and finding joy easier than him
because the difficulty in his happiness vs others does not makes his any more valuable or "genuine". he can view his approach superior and calculated, jaded towards the rest, but at the end of the day he was the sole person who didn't find his peace
NOT entirely true he did find it go go ivan smile smile. but yeah i do not think being raised in a human farm for the giggles of bougie aliens + severe depression helped his case. look at how moe actor au is. so much more lively and expressive, no longer victim of circumstance
Tumblr media
"ivan when the sloppy beast symbolizes his love 🤯🤯 it's monstrous and unsightly yet he cannot maintain his curiosity since its first discovery. at the end of it all he lays peacefully in its maw of the all-loving, he has accepted the lovelessness of it all"
Tumblr media
bringing this up again because YES he is sleeping peacefully in a monstrosity of a love he has come to accept. YES this art is actually an expression of self love
at the end of the day he does love till just not in the conventional way he has sought in concept

Greater Plot Implications for Path of Life
Okay we're gonna go deep in spoilers this time, for more than just Path of Life far into the main story, so be warned! Time to (try to) dissect what the conversation between Mártus and Kal'tsit might have been on about. The majority of these dialogue cuts are from BP-7.
Tumblr media
Mártus distinguishes himself as an extremely knowledgeable individual and grabs the attention of the reader by referring to Kal'tsit as Ama-10 as one of his opening lines, among other things:
Tumblr media
Mártus continues and explains that he and the seaborn are aware of crucial things about the setting, including the fall of the Predecessors, but before that we need to talk about other things revealed in the event.
This detail was first hinted at in Babel with the Doctor's waking up, of them asking about Caerula Arbor alongside the ruined gates, establishing it as a Predecessor ruin. Throughout PoL it's established that Aegir exploded scientifically due to reverse engineering several of these ruins, including those implanted into the mantle of the world:
Tumblr media
Within these ruins is a Feranmut, one who shares to the now-lone Mártus in this ruinous expedition the silencing of the Predecessors and everything extinguishing, describing a wasteland reminiscent of a universal heat death:
Tumblr media
This horrifies Mártus, as it has horrified the Feranmut sharing the vision, who had since devised a plan: do anything necessary, consume everything necessary, to survive the second coming of whatever this apocalypse was. The Seaborn are an extension of this specific Feranmut's will and Mártus' actions:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Keep in mind 'Ark' for later. Kal'tsit mentions knowledge if not experience with Feranmut spawn dying outside of it's body, which is off-putting, while also mentioning Feranmuts, plural.
Tumblr media
Unlike Kal'tsit Aegir was unaware of other Firstborn (Seaborn related Feranmut), the other three being revealed far earlier than now in IS3. These four are described as each having respective influences and control over the Seaborn and ocean, suggesting all four of them being part of the same Predecessor project, but it's difficult to determine what's relevant given IS3's alternate universe identity, so I won't dwell on it.
To try and draw some conclusions-
I want to call to mind the mysterious menu skeleton, and the fact that Rhodes Island (which is a Predecessor artifact) also ostensibly holds a whale skeleton (probably the menu skeleton) as said and escorted by Ines in Darknights Memoir:
Tumblr media
Chapter 13 reveals the Lifebone, a mostly dead Feranmut reduced to nothing but a skeleton that's capable of maneuvering through definitely space, and potentially time. When we compare these abilities and the RI skeleton to probably the most intimidating and daunting set of lines to understand in the entire event:
Tumblr media
A picture begins to form in my mind that Feranmuts are, or at least can be, Predecessor biotechnological projects. The Lifebone was a naturally occurring Feranmut, not an engineered one, but its capabilities of traversing space (and maybe time) are undeniable, especially if that involves vast distances in space travel.
What I can say is that: - The Lifebone demonstrates sentience and rationality; it can be talked to and convinced, both happen in chapters 13 & 14. - The actions and thoughts of the Firstborn that Mártus talked to suggest they appear to be invested in the survival of life, at least of themselves. - By virtue of what Kal'tsit said, they do also care about their 'internal independent ecosystems,' which has been proven to be able to be co-opted and replaced by humans. - By virtue of this project existing Feranmuts are capable of things irreproducible even to the Predecessors. - Feranmuts exist outside of Terra as they were tested with on Talos
The despairing Feranmut derailed from the project, intentionally or due to the collapse of the Predecessors and oversight, and sought to evolve a solution to the impending apocalypse, simulating growth in its spawn, and acquiring nutrients for its own evolution.
I'm content that I can now read this full conversation and understand it, but this clarity unfortunately reinforces and exaggerates the mysteries of existing questions. Primarily being "What exactly happened to the Predecessors?", "What were their plans for survival, how did they involve Feranmuts and to what extent?", and "What exactly are Feranmuts?"

God there's just something about Paul being a bitch that's so utterly, indescribably delightful to me. All the beatles had their share of petty cruelty but his is the best because he just had this finesse and ingenuity and almost artistic circuitousness to it that's basically irreproducible. I wish we'd seen that side of him more often in public. It's unmatched and I'm obsessed with it.

The sky is falling for some anonymous National Institutes of Health employees, scientists and institutions that receive federal research grants in response to the Trump administration's 12-day "pause" on document releases from the Department of Health and Human Services, which halts the work of NIH grant review panels.
Careers are at risk, innovation is at stake, life-saving research could be threatened, they say. But a pause might be good for man's best friend.
The animal-cruelty watchdog that exposed the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases' funding of gruesome experiments on puppies worldwide, with which its former director Anthony Fauci was confronted at a House hearing last year, published more records of federally funded puppy experiments this week, this time in China.
The Freedom of Information Act production to the White Coat Waste Project shows federal contracts for research in Chinese labs through May for "the evaluation of pharmacokinetics of compounds from dystonia" using beagles, mice and rats.
NIH kicked in $124,200 and Department of Defense an unspecified amount, the latter only mentioned in a single sentence: NIH's National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences "has received a DoD award to specifically fund animal studies delineated in this award."
Researchers would use about 300 beagles a week, chosen because they are "docile, cute and easy to domesticate," the applicant's solicitation says.
The dry scientific language obscures the cruelty of the experiments, testing "poison" drugs on "puppies as young as 8 months old" by repeatedly shoving tubes in their mouths and restraining them "for hours on end," WCW said, posting pictures of the poor pups.

All of @adamarks fics are my absolute faves but "so long seabird" just grabbed me by the throat in such a delicate way. There are so few writers in this fandom who get their voices just perfect, and it's so hard to get it right! But Jay does it time and time again, and every single fic is a work of art - the banter is immaculate, the vibes are irreproducible, the love is always always there.
If you're looking for a quick weekend read where Stede is cockdrunk and Ed is insane over it, if you're looking for a fic that leaves you tingly all over, if you're looking to click on a pwp that gives you so many stupid fluttery feelings about them that you about start sobbing, please read this fic and please read all of jay's works ♥️
Hello @adamarks! You've received a lovely review. Congrats on being featured as Author of the Week! 💌
Crew, click here to read So Long, Seabird, and then be sure to check out his other stories here.

what a way to explore the consequences and sources of paternalism. the interventionist efforts of the caretaker to fix what was broken by providing the end-products necessary for survival but not the means, while dooming others to a somewhat artificial competition, creating an ecosystem that cannot sustain itself nor foster any aspect of higher-level sentience in beings (like curiosity! or deep passion! which is punished!), all of which relies on reproduction.
reproduction which is delicate and fragile and yet insurmountable in its demands. like of course this civilization that depends on a top-down selective distribution of power also depends entirely on reproduction and fails when reproduction fails. it's like the failures of medieval lords-and-bondsman, where "the institution cannot guarantee the continuity of kingly life, but it is the only institution available" and beowulf, alone and irreproduced (son-less), dies with a dragon. of course b'elanna and harry are honored guests---they were foundational to the entire ocampa people for the brief moments they were among them. their illness was just a symbol of the foundation's brittleness.
contrasted with janeway cutting the entirety of voyager's strings to their community, their infrastructure, their source of power, their foundational space. they're all in a similar helplessness to the ocampa by the end of it, but the degree of choice is vastly different--as in, choice exists. the implication being that while voyager is now more lost than imaginable they're also not. and the fact that the ship is named the same name as NASA's voyager 1 and voyager 2, both of which were sent out with the absolute intention of them never being returned home, speaks to something particular as well. what ties a people to a place has to be something more dependable than the "honor" of producing offspring.

We mostly seem to feel it appropriate and desirable that all spoken words, even office memoranda, recordings of private conversations, grandmother’s tales, be saved on tape, stored in memory banks, transcribed, written, printed, preserved in libraries. Perhaps not many of us could say why we save so many words, why our forests must all be cut to make paper to mark our words on, our rivers dammed to make electricity to power our word processors; we do it obsessively, as if afraid of something, as if compensating for something. Maybe we’re afraid of death, afraid to let our words simply be spoken and die, leaving silence for new words to be born in. Maybe we seek community, the lost, the irreproducible. -- Ursula K. Le Guin, Always Coming Home (576-7)

The Strife of Truth with Art
by thearrogantemu, sumeria (@thearrogantemu, @sumeriasmith)
Part 2 of To Morning Through the Shadow
The originals of the following pages were received in a bundle, arranged in an approximate order but bound only in the temporary fashion customary for field notes in the early 1500s. I have transcribed them for your archives, though certain elements, such as the flora pressed between some of the pages or the stains on others, are irreproducible and I have noted them accordingly. The headings are mine, and the transcription also includes my commentary on some of the more obscure points in the text as well as my reproduction of the original marginalia. Although the identities of the respective authors were evident from the handwriting in the original, in this copy I have taken the liberty of inserting indications as to their identity. This story takes the AU begun in In Full Measure I Return To You to a more distant, or perhaps, more familiar place. At the end of Return, Annatar and Celebrimbor were informed that they were being sent back to Middle Earth in the manner of the Istari. Arriving upon these shores that they had left under such adverse circumstances, they found their legend had grown - or perhaps, altered - in their absence.

House of the Dragon's S2 finale being another object lesson in troubled and stretched pacing (omg Rhaenyra pls just kill people already instead of whining about it for the 18th time, Bibi give this war crimes virgin a call and lay down a few pointers for her) is disappointing, but I gotta say it makes up for it by delivering unto me the saltiest r/asoiaf thread I have seen in half a decade. Over 2000 comments of sighing, crying, moaning, and mocking, like the reddit of old. Such nostalgia levels are irreproducible sans such authentic motivation, and we all gave up on Winds of Winter anyway, can't complain about that anymore with any juice. This is how the ASOIAF fandom should be.
