it’s 2024 and people in the world are still under the misguided belief that ryan reynolds is a good, or even decent, actor.
pity 😪

I do find it interesting that ATLA managed to use a very black and white narrative (stop Evil Empire) to tell several character stories with some nuance, while TDP claims it has a nuanced conflict and flattens everything to try and make up for that, ultimately leading to protagonist centred morality more than anything. And if they didn’t want me to compare the two then they should have let go of the ATLA references right away.
you're right and you should say it.
the constant and shoehorned references to ATLA do not really do this show any favors. honestly might be part of the problem (why are there 7 primals with color-coded elves? to follow ATLA's pattern of marketable separable elements. why is it an adventure story with a core crew? because ATLA was like this too. etc etc.)
but anyway. yeah. ATLA had a very simple main conflict to provide a constant source of tension throughout the show (even if they dropped the ball at the last season re: the plot), and this structure allowed for episodes that explore other aspects of the setting and characters while still making everything feel relevant and tied together by said conflict. it's not some arthouse show by any means, but it has good compelling story work into it. genuinely great show.
tdp immediately opens up with the nuance and it never really delves deeper. you'd think that opening with characters being aware of the cycle of violence stuff would be interesting and the show would explore that more, but it just... flatlines there. there's no progression or graduation or exploration of themes as the seasons go on like in ATLA. very rarely are there new questions being asked or arcs that feel sensical.
honestly the main characters having to be perfect in every situation is the biggest problem with tdp. the mains are not allowed to have shortcomings or mistaken judgements or anything to meaningfully interact in any way with the nuanced set-up. they emotionally exist entirely outside it, which ends up making them the Messiahs of Peace Who Can Do No Wrong. good for fandoms i guess, people bitched and whined about bato and the water tribe for years. but it's not very good for storytelling.
and also, they're just bad characters and the writers can't put two and two together while still asking you to take their world very seriously.
anyways i'm just rambling at this point. good observation.

hey everyone . thinking about how the first time arthur receives a heartbreaking letter from mary , telling him she's engaged , he had dutch and hosea to run to and cry to . but this time , when he receives the letter that she has to move on and her plea for him to figure himself out , he has neither dutch nor hosea to cry to . he has no one , really , who he really feels like he can cut loose to . because he is supposed to be the one who stands strong for everyone else , even in spite of his active death , and he can't be showing weakness now , when morale is so low .

Me, stuck in my current draft and remembering the advice to go back a few paragraphs and find the problem: Clearly what I need is a better understanding of character arcs and motivations in these political discussions

ohhh do you prefer there was only one bed or fake/pretend relationship?? 👀
both of you asked a similar thing, so i'm answering both here
FAKE DATING
i LIVE for it. i looooooooooooove it when two character are obviously down bad for each other but have zero clue and have to fake date for whatever silly reason and it ends up being wayyyyyy too enjoyable for both of them. but of course they have no idea their feelings are mutual so they're trying very hard not to let their very real feelings ruin their friendship. because there's no way the other person feels the same, right? of course their kiss was just very good acting to fool everyone else :))))
(of course i'm not mean enough not to have character a and b get together at the end. i love it when all their friends call them out and they realize how stupid they've been the whole time. it was fake dating but their feelings were very much real)
put two fanfic tropes in my ask and i tell which i’d rather read

I don't ship satosugu, but the way people will bury their heads so deep into the sand to deny its canon implications is so wild to me.
Pointing at that relationship chart on twitter as a gotcha, like, okay?.. If anything, the fact that Suguru is considered the “best friend” while the others are referred to as “students”, “classmate”, “teacher” is the biggest indication that Suguru was the only person Satoru actually and genuinely cared about. If they weren't boyfriends, there could at least be unrequited feelings type of thing going on from Satoru's side.
“He would only date older rich women” y'all ever heard of bisexuality? It's been a thing for centuries, fyi. I personally always hc'd him as a bisexual homoromantic (or in this case, sugurumantic) due to that one time when Gege said Satoru couldn't open up to a woman, and now I think Gege pretty much confirmed that.
At the end of the day, it's all fiction and we can hc anything and everything we want, but bullying the shippers and outright rejecting Satoru's feelings when there's literally NO OTHER REASON to why they censored his last words towards Suguru other then the obvious outrage it would stir up within the fans is... a poor choice. If you want to be illiterate, fine. You hate the ship, cool. But stop acting like that small part of the fandom are the insane ones and they're ruining the series for wanting two Ken dolls to kiss.

this is such a hot take and i know that bc everybody is literally obsessed with it but i think nimona is actually one of the worst movies ive ever seen (if not the actual worst). this is maybe because i have been a fan since it was just a webcomic, then turned into a graphic novel, and so i was so ridiculously excited when they announced the movie only for it to be an embarrassing stupid 100% basic movie when that is LITERALLY THE OPPOSITE of what the book was. the book was revolutionary, the movie is 'inclusive'. listen. i love inclusivity. i love diversity especially in childrens movies. but PLEASE. just MAKE YOUR OWN MOVIE. nimona is in absolutely no world a childrens book so why defile its majesty with this idiocy

I don't even understand what was happening in my dream honestly there was a whole story going on there with reoccurring characters but now they are lost to the confides of my brain forever
