Hi, I was reading your post about the Super Bowl half-time breakdown and wanted to ask if there's any articles or information you recommend where I can read more about the racist connotations behind Uncle Sam (outside of its connections to US imperialism of course). I haven't had much luck with Google, bc most of that loops me back to the slave trade and the Civil War, except it's all mostly from a white or nationalistic perspective.

I'm a white Australian and I hadn't come across the term being used in a derogatory way towards black and African Americans before, so it exposed another gap in my knowledge that I would like to rectify and learn from.

Ah sorry let me clarify:

“Uncle” is the derogatory term. Look up Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Uncle Remus stories (Brer Rabbit etc), Song of the South (which Disney tried to scrub from history), and Sam L Jackson’s character in Django Unchained.

Below is the standard imagery of “Uncle Sam” (from NARA). It was WWII propaganda seen often for encouraging people to enlist or to represent the US military’s actions abroad (so like, in a comic strip alongside personifications for UK, France, Soviets, etc.)

Kendrick equated this ^ Uncle Sam with the Black “Uncle” stereotype, which is truly genius.

I saw a “five facts about my oc” meme and wanted to write some lore for Ulysses:

Human name: Ulysses Noone, Skibidi title: the Overseer

-A heavy smoker as both human and Skibidi

-He’s loosely inspired by Calvin Candie from Django Unchained, only smarter and more stable. He talks like Foghorn Leghorn. Loud, aggressive and confident. He says things like ‘bless your heart’ and ‘sugar honey iced tea’. Ulysses is the only one of my OCs who would never swear, ever.

-Formerly a linguistics professor. Since he’s an arts major, scientist toilet saw him as the guy with the keys to the cleaning supply closet.

-The Overseer and Prison Warden of Alpha Hills, Ulysses is manipulative and easily underestimated.

-Ulysses had a wife and son before the Skibidi apocalypse. he doesn't know where they are now, whether they died, became skibidis or even still exist as humans somewhere. he's also dating a female skibidi medic who doesn't know he's technically married (she’s the medic mentioned a few times in my fanfic Not Alone btw)

Interesting extra fact: Fandom wiki changed the name of Assailant Astro to Overseer Astro right after I used the name for my OC.

misc luna maximoff headcanons / lore :

her middle name is django, after pietro's father. her full name is luminița django maximoff-amaquelin. (have been toying with her 2nd middle name being after crystal's mother, ambur or maybe another a name). luna is a nickname that's simply stuck.

luna does not look like her comic appearances! she looks more like the maximoff side (i've rb'd some art before so you'll see it every so often <3). luna has very similar features to the maximoff side -- she's also been drawn with a very similar nose and facial expressions to pietro (scarlet witch and quicksilver 2024 my beloveds). she also has naturally curly hair. she typically wears her hair in different style of braids (fishtail, dutch, french -- i like to make comparisons to attila / inhumans + star wars' alderaan with the braids! i think it's neat!). i also have a live action fc for luna for reference (maria jose llergo), which def represents her more than i can ever describe (check out her music she's wonderful).

luna has white hair like her father and grandfather. her hair changed to white when her mutant abilities kicked in. one could say it's purely inherited, but given that her mutant abilities are related the moon and the moon is white ... both make sense !

speaking of her powers -- when luna was in her mid teens her mutant powers kicked in. everyone assumed the mutant side cancelled out the inhuman side, but then she got her inhuman abilities, so she eventually got mutant ones as well.

her mutant powers are lunar empowerment / lunar manipulation / lunar energy manipulation, and anything similar. she has very strong ties to the moon since she was born there, one may say the moon chose her and gave her those abilities out of love. the moon gave her life. luna understands the moon, feels her emotions, her anger, her grief, etc … luna also has strong ties to oceans and bodies of water and would be content to spend hours there. ( you could even say it's an extension of crystal due to her hydrokinetic powers )

she has potential for magic! though it wouldn't be chaos magic but a subset of her moon abilities that take the form of lunar magic.

luna is not a small child in most verses and in my characterization of her. luna's spent most of her time in comic limbo and thus is still younger than tommy and billy (who have aged) past their teens, so luna will be 18+ and will be college aged / in college. this does make her parents older by default so i am fully open to writing her in her teens!!! but it's not my go-to. shes been around since the 80s likeee.

luna is VERY ATHETIC -- it does somewhat come from her father and his influence but as a kid she was all over the place and had a lot of energy -- she did soccer, softball, volleyball, dance, but soccer was her favorite, which she does in college verses.

luna loves earth. after living on the moon for so long (as a child), she becomes fascinated with earth and how many cultures and societies there are. she had a very different perception of the size of earth and didn't realize how big it was and how small and insignificant it could make her feel. she loves the food, the communities, the oceans and the millions of creatures within it.

she's really not interested in being a hero, but she also knows she'll never be "normal" (she doesn't want to be!).

i do like to think that she sees her father a lot more than in the comics. he paid for her schooling at braddock academy, but she still saw him! ever since he apologized on live television after son of m, their relationship has gotten better, but does primarily spend time with her mother other inhumans.

also luna HATED braddock academy -- she hated how uniform and strict it was. she had too much energy for a kid who was supposed to sit down and listen and take notes in class. ( she has a lot of adhd traits btw ).

luna is a vegetarian!

Thoughts, reactions and spoilers below the cut!

The way Sanji fights is so smooth. Careful but quick maneveuring (yes I know he's losing here but still!!! Cigarette toss -> slide out -> handstand kick? Satisfying)

Sanjis choice to be unequivocally kind to everyone completely changes the tide for him here. I feel like so far in the story we've seen kindness being payed back in good karma through it's recipients (like with Usopps pirates & Kaya dragging Django away from the fight with their presence), but this is the first time the karma is coming from someone who used to be cruel.

Sanjis moral philosophy might not be perfect but it's kind at it's core and that can change someone like Gin

Being a pirate that can't touch water really is horrid con in battle 💀 Especially right now when he's in a situation where there's no one who'll be able to jump in and save him, it's like a life or death version of the floor is lava

Extra thoughts:

•He's protecting his hat 😭

•Both crews shocked at their respective crewmates losing position (except for Zeff who's completely locked in lol), Sanji and Gin going through visceral pain/emotion respectively (both really well drawn btw, for two small panels they get across the characters current issue really well. There have been tons of small good panels like this before but I usually don't get to point them out oops) and Luffy's just in the corner caught in the middle of making a dumb face at Krieg. Fire
