Hello, hello, and thank you so much for the ask! This ended up being borderline comedy/crack fic... I hope you enjoy it. I was happy to be able to write something for you (and of course, Masamune).

Title: A Dramatic Pawse (...part one)

Characters: Masamune, Shogetsu, with assists from Kojuro, Ieyasu, and additional 'help' from Mitsunari

Prompt: "It's only a flesh wound."

“I’ll take the pointy end, you grab the rest.” Masamune briefly looked away from the snarling beast to check in with his vassal.

The confident statement gave Kojuro the courage to edge closer to the ball of belligerence, only be greeted by a warning hiss. “It’s all pointy.” Though he wasn’t unwilling to help, he would at least like some guarantee that he could perform this task without being flayed.

Acknowledging the truth of that, Masamune slowly circled his previously (until today) friendly tiger, all the while speaking in a calm, coaxing voice. “I know you’re in pain lad, but we’re trying to help you.”

Shogetsu finally recognized his human through the haze of pain and seemed to relax somewhat. Encouraged, Masamune slowly, cautiously, reached out to Shogetsu’s paw, trying to get a look at whatever had caused the tiger to limp into the manor a short while earlier.

Seeing a potential ‘bad touch’ approaching the ‘ouchie,’ Shogetsu swiped out with his other paw and growled again. Masamune backed away. “Kojuro, see if you can find Ieyasu and convince him to come over here.”

“Of course, Lord Masamune.” Kojuro’s respectful bow in no way revealed his inner sigh. It seemed he was not going to be able to escape the pointy bits and a flaying after all...

While waiting for Ieyasu’s arrival, Masamune seated himself closer to Shogetsu and began a quiet monologue, hoping to get through to the beastie. “War wounds are a fact of life, lad. I’m certain that whatever you fought looks far worse than you right now.”

Shogetsu pulled his sore paw closer to lick the injury. As the claws extended and retracted, Masamune spotted a shard of pottery lodged between the pads of his toes. “Ah. Your opponent was one of those vases that Hideyoshi loves so much. I confess, I might have done the same.” He again reached out to comfort his furry companion, but Shogetsu eyed him balefully and let out another warning rumble.

“You’ll be alright, lad. It’s only a flesh wound, but I’ve had enough of those myself to know that though they hurt like the devil, the pain doesn’t last. They’re badges of honor. Once Ieyasu fixes you up, I’m sure you’ll have something to show off to the lady tigers.” Masamune pulled back his sleeve, revealing a map of small scars, knicks and scrapes, acquired over years of war. He pointed to a long gash below his elbow. “Like this one. This scar was inflicted by none other than Nobunaga himself, though it was simply a sparring injury.” He lifted up the edge of his hakima and showed the tiger a newly healing slash along his leg. “As for this one…”

By the time a grumbling Ieyasu was ushered into the room, Masamune’s voice had grown hoarse from recounting the tales behind his battle scars.

“Some of us do have work to do.” Ieyasu set a basket of hastily gathered medical supplies on Masamune’s writing desk. “And Hideyoshi wondered why you missed war council.” He took a step toward Shogetsu. Not recognizing the new face, the tiger’s warning growl filled the room.  Ieyasu scooted out of range. “I can’t help him if he bites my hand off.”

“Kojuro and I will hold him still.” But a tiny note of doubt had crept into Masamune’s voice and Kojuro literally turned pale. After all, it had been their inability to examine Shogetsu that had prompted Ieyasu’s house call to begin with. “It’s his front left paw – there’s a broken piece of porcelain stuck in it.”

Heaving the sigh of a man suffering a thousand daily blows, Ieyasu found a jar of herbs amongst his supplies. “This might make him sleepy – if you have some meat to hide it in.”

While Kojuro escaped in search of fresh meat, Ieyasu set out a jar of ointment and a clean bundle of bandages. Masamune made a move to help, only to receive the glare of death and an Ieyasu-sized growling noise that somewhat resembled the same sounds emanating from Shogetsu. “Do I touch your cooking tools? No. I do not.”

“Fair enough.” Masamune stepped back and quashed an urge to pace. Truthfully, he had been more worried about Shogetsu than he let on. Lately the adolescent cub had been testing his freedom, spending more and more time away from home and exploring the environs around Azuchi. Masamune knew this was the natural order of things and would never have curbed a wild creature’s desire to explore, to run, to chase butterflies (or, well, small birds). But when Shogetsu hadn’t returned the previous evening for his normal meal, he’d become concerned. At this point, he was willing to do whatever he could to help the tiger recover.

Even if that meant backing away and letting Ieyasu be Ieyasu.

Eventually, Kojuro returned with a bowl of fresh boar meat, which Ieyasu sprinkled with herbs.

“How do you know how much to give him?” From Kojuro’s vantage, it had seemed that Ieyasu had just grabbed a random amount and tossed it into the bowl.

“I don’t.”

Shogetsu let out another snarl. Ieyasu looked at the tiger, then back to the bowl of meat and added more herbs. “Nor am I at all certain that this will calm him down. It works on people. It didn’t work on a rabbit. But tigers are neither people nor rabbits.” He shoved the bowl into Masamune’s hands. “This, you may help with.”

Cautiously, Masamune approached Shogetsu and set the bowl in front of him. After a couple hesitant sniffs, the tiger licked at a sliver of meat, before gulping it all down.

“Now, we wait,” Ieyasu said.

When Shogetsu finally relaxed enough to allow Masamune to touch him, it was anyone’s guess as to whether it was the herbs or the full belly. But whatever the reason, Masamune was able to gently but firmly hold Shogetsu’s upper body, keeping his teeth and claws away from Ieyasu, while Kojuro was left the duty of keeping a firm grip on the other half (a.k.a ‘the lower pointy bits’ for those with little medical knowledge). Though Shogetsu once again protested this treatment, they kept him immobilized long enough to allow Ieyasu to remove the shard, slather the injury in ointment, and tightly bind the wound. “That will take care of it. The wound looked pretty clean, so he should make a full recovery.”

“Thank you,” Masamune said while Ieyasu checked the security of the bandage. The two simple words didn’t cover gratitude he felt, but he knew Ieyasu would be embarrassed by over-praise. He resolved to cook a few extra-spicey meals for the lad.

“I didn’t do it for you, I did it for the animal.” Ieyasu took a step back. And the another, in case Shogetsu decided to protest the treatment by going after the healer. “Why anyone would keep a dangerous wild animal as a pet is beyond my comprehension.”

“You have a wild animal as a pet.” Masamune kept a calming hand on Shogetsu’s head.

“First of all, Wasabi is not a pet. Emergency food supply. How many times do I have to tell you that?” Ieyasu grimly packed up his supplies. “Nor is she dangerous.” He gave Masamune a look that dared him to argue. “You can let him go now. I want to see if he can walk on it.”

Kojuro and Masamune simultaneously let go and stepped back (technically, Masamune stepped back. Kojuro jumped).

Everyone held their breath, waiting to see whether Shogetsu would get up.

Then, suddenly realizing that he was not only free, but also no longer in pain, Shogetsu sprang up and wildly bound around the room, careening off the walls and knocking things over.

“Hm. That’s the same reaction that the rabbit had when I gave it the herbs.” Ieyasu nimbly ducked out of the way as the tiger ricocheted over him.

“That’s…” Masamune considered a few choice words then settled on, “interesting. How long until it wears off?”

“Could take the rest of the day.” Ieyasu shrugged. “Er, I’d keep him away from other animals. When the initial excitement wore off, the rabbit became somewhat … amorous. Then again, rabbits. It might be different with tigers.”

“Shogetsu.” Masamune tried to get his attention. “You’ve had a long night, and a rough morning. Wouldn’t you like to take a nice nap?”

The tiger ignored him and continued to tear around the room. Even then, this situation might have turned out ok, had it not been for the arrival of a fourth party.

“Lord Masamune, I was told that Lord Ieyasu was here.” Mitsunari’s voice floated from the closed door. “May I come in?”

At that, all three men shouted over the sound of the crazed tiger.

“No!”

“Keep the door shut!”

“Don’t come in!”

“I’m sorry.” Mitsunari slide the door open. “I could not hear what you sa—oops!”

Shogetsu zoomed past him, with Masamune and Kojuro close behind.

“Go on! Catch the tiger.” Ieyasu shooed Mitsunari away.

After a slight moment of hesitation, Mitsunari turned and ran after the others.

Once they had all disappeared, Ieyasu finished packing up his things and headed out in the other direction.

Meanwhile…

Outside Masamune’s castle, Shogetsu stopped briefly to roll in a mud puddle, apparently hoping to get the scent of medicine off him. However, before the three men could catch him, he leaped up again, blew through a pile of dead leaves (most of which stuck to his muddy, wet body) and headed toward the castle town.

None of Shogetsu’s human followers were a match for his speed. All they could do was hurry toward the sound of screams and the swathe of destruction – an overturned palanquin… a torn-up garden… a furious fabric dealer – as the tiger, now resembling some sort of primordial mud monster, ran almost blindly through streets and alleys.

Then suddenly, Masamune and Kojuro hit a dead end. One wall. No tiger. They retreated to the main thoroughfare, looking and listening for the sounds of chaos.

Kojuro tilted his head, then pointed back toward the center of Azuchi. “There’s some sort of commotion coming from there.”

Unfortunately for everyone involved… and for someone soon to be involved… the commotion noted by Kojuro was not, in fact, the tiger, but just the normal amount of feminine attention attracted by Mitsunari’s angelic beauty. The young man was surrounded by a crowd of young women, all insisting that they escort him to tea.

So… where …

Where did the tiger go?

Well, in fact, Shogetsu climbed over three walls, broke the fourth wall, and jumped into the “ask box.”

And so, his story will soon be continued…

As it happens... this particular request fit neatly in with a later request, and so in true chaotic fashion, the story will continue in a later request...

“Daddy, I want a pet!”

Hyunwoo glanced away from the breakfast he was preparing and down to the little boy at his side. His son was tugging on the hem of Hyunwoo’s sweater, anchored there with his desperate plea.

“A pet?” he repeated and his son nodded energetically. Thinking of what to say, Hyunwoo went back to the pancakes he was cooking. It was too early in the morning for big decisions such as a pet. And although his son was seven years old, in those short seven years, he had learned that a sleepy father meant he was easier to convince.

But a pet was a big deal and one he couldn’t just agree to without consulting you as well.

“Daddy, why aren’t you answering me?”

“I’m thinking.”

“So that’s a yes?!”

He chuckled and glanced back down. “That’s an I’m needing to think about it.”

“It’s not a no!” he cried, letting go of the sweater in triumph and racing off down the hallway to the master bedroom.

Hyunwoo sighed; he knew what would come next. He continued to make breakfast, figuring everyone would need to eat regardless of the decisions needing to be made. You appeared ten minutes later, carrying your daughter in your arms. You gave your husband a trying look. “What’s this about agreeing to a pet?”

“I said I was thinking about it,” Hyunwoo confirmed, leaning in to kiss you in greeting. He then turned to the eleven-month-old you held, fussing over her chubby cheeks affectionately before tending to the pancakes. He finished off the final pancake and then delivered the piled plate to the middle of the table. After placing two onto his son’s plate, Hyunwoo gave him a reproachful stare. “Did you tell Mummy I agreed to a pet?”

“You basically have, you said you’re thinking about it,” the little boy replied matter-of-factly and you tried your best to bite back your smile.

Hyunwoo sighed. “Son, that doesn’t mean Daddy has said yes.”

“So you’re saying no?!” he wailed, tears appearing immediately.

Hyunwoo couldn’t deal with the sudden emotions and turned to you for help. “How about after breakfast, and I’ve gotten your sister dressed, we all sit down and write out a list.”

“A list?” he repeated, glancing between both parents. “A list about what, Mummy?”

“Of all the things you need to be responsible over owning a pet. There’s quite a lot of work involved. What kind of pet do you want?”

“A puppy!”

“A dog?” Hyunwoo asked as he looked around the home. He went to reject the idea but noticed the look in your eyes, silencing him from speaking any further.

As your son raced off to get dressed, Hyunwoo took your daughter out of the highchair and gave you a look. “What are you up to? We can’t house a dog here.”

“Just let me deal with this.”

As promised, when everyone was dressed and ready for the day, you sat down with a pen and paper with your son. “Okay, so there’s a lot to be aware of when raising a puppy.”

“Like taking it for walks!”

“Exactly!” you enthused, writing it down on the paper. You encouraged your son to continue and after mentioning playtime and a place to sleep, he was fresh out of ideas. So you smiled and started listing it off. “He will need to eat, won’t he? That means we’ll have to buy him food.”

“We can buy it!”

“Dog food can be expensive. And you’ll have to feed your dog twice a day. Before you feed yourself as well.”

“Can’t he wait until I’m done?”

You shook your head solemnly. “Oh no, your puppy has to come first. Just like you and your baby sister come first before Mummy and Daddy.”

“…Okay.”

“And then your puppy will need to go toilet too.”

“We can use the bathroom!”

“Dogs go toilet outside,” Hyunwoo mentioned and then pointed to the balcony outside. “And we don’t have a backyard in this house. So you’ll have to take him to the park.”

“I will?!”

You agreed. “Well, it’s you who wants the pet.”

“Alone?”

“No, Mummy or Daddy will come with you but it’s your responsibility to pick it up!”

“Gross!”

“Mummy and Daddy clean your sister’s dirty diapers even if it’s gross and we did that for you too.”

Your son giggled. “But she isn’t a puppy!”

“No, but having a puppy is a big responsibility just like raising children too.”

After a couple more statements, Hyunwoo could tell his son was over the idea of having a puppy. Sitting down beside the defeated child, he smiled. “Do you still want to go get a puppy?”

“No! I can’t do all this, I’m just a kid!”

“Do you know there is a pet you can have that won’t be nearly as hard to raise?” you offered and both Hyunwoo and his son perked up.

Several hours later, Hyunwoo stood in front of the aquarium, watching the two goldfish swimming around in their new surroundings. He then glanced at you, smiling. “He’s happy and they’re low maintenance.”

“My first pet was a goldfish named Speedy,” you informed him with a fond smile and snuggled into Hyunwoo’s side. “He’ll learn responsibility without being overwhelmed with these two.”

“I’m happy you chose to parent in that way. At first, I thought you were being a bit harsh shutting down his puppy dreams even if we can’t really house one here.”

You smiled and patted your husband on his chest playfully. “You’re going to have to step it up at work, babe.”

“What, why? These fish are cost-effective!”

“They are, but they don’t last very long. I was ten when I got my first dog,” you told him with a giggle, and Hyunwoo gaped at you for a moment and then he chuckled as well.

“Guess we better start working towards finding a home with a backyard then.”

Dog owners of the World unite (and usually over the strangest things)

How many people recognise this situation? Mid-morning in a meeting, you reach into your pocket and as you pull your hand out a poop bag gently floats to the table. Embarrassed you reach to grab it back without drawing too much attention to yourself, but, too late – everyone has seen this slight mishap but the response is not what you would expect. The strangest things unite us as dog owners, and as you look round the table at your assembled colleagues and peers you note a softening of features, a nod of recognition, as you all head off for your well-earned coffee break you find yourself surrounded, ‘So you have a dog? What breed? Here, this is a picture of my pupstar’. And just like that the ice is broken, people are chatting and laughing, exchanging stories and anecdotes. Wallets and mobile phones are produced, and where once there may have been pictures of smiling spouses and tousle haired children, there are Dalmatians, Dachshunds and French Bulldogs. The proud pawrent who cannot wait to swap recommendations for local favourite walks or dog friendly holidays. Pets are very much a part of our family, whom we dote on, take great pride in, and cannot wait to share.

Social media has given us amazing opportunities to share our pawed and clawed family with a huge audience, we give our pets their own accounts and create whole personas, sharing tales and photos of their daily lives across multiple platforms and developing networks and bonds with a multitude of families across the World, doing exactly the same thing. We love to see how other people and their dogs live, with urbanites fascinated by the rural ramblings of their friends. While the villager is framing picturesque images of their Spaniel in stunning scenery, the townie is sharing shots of their pug in a designer jumper, pawsing at a local café for refreshment.

As well as sharing our lifestyles, we also cannot wait to share our hints and tips, valuable insights we have learned, as self-styled trainers and coaches, especially when it comes to some of the behaviours and skills we are working on with our dogs, that friends may not have quite got to grips with. Very early on, my own personal experience with trying to establish recall with our Battersea Rescue dog taught me a great lesson! While walking with a friendly, chatty chap and his dog, he shared with me his tip for instant recall, a squeaky ball – his dog could not resist the sound and would come running from wherever and whatever he was doing. The next day, duly inspired, I bought a selection and began using what I now call the sneaky squeaky tip. However, one thing I learned with this wonderful new tool in my training arsenal, there is a time and a place for everything – and the dog park is neither. With my happy dog off playing with 9 other off lead dogs, recall was proving a challenge, so I deployed the sneaky squeaky, and watched as the other owners, who obviously knew what was about to happen, united in what I can only describe as expectant amusement – at the sound of the squeak, the thunderous advance of paws from 9 very excited dogs was impressive, if a little daunting, the sneaky squeaky had worked wonderfully on every single dog, except my own! While she was still happily off amusing herself with the sights and smells of the park, I was surrounded by the over excited leaping of her new muddy footed pals and then their owners, trying to convince their dogs to ‘get down, or get off or leave’. Note to self, when sharing sneaky squeaky tip advise caution!

It’s not just our experiences we cannot wait to share, it is the toys we have bought, the accessories we use, the equipment we have bought and the successes and failures we have had with each. In the last ten years our relationship with our dogs has changed quite dramatically, as we have easy access to the plethora of information about the ways we build a bond with our dogs, and the incredible developments in training and behaviour, the amazing advances in recognising how dogs learn and how we need to learn not only how to read them and their body language, but how they read us, and the effect that can have on their own behaviour. Canine enrichment and the benefits for your dogs and their general well-being is now one of the fastest growing sources of sharing on social media, people posting and vlogging free and cheap ideas that they have successfully used with their dogs, often modifying and reproducing expensive products currently on the market, for pennies rather than pounds. A shoe box, some treats and toys, your dog’s favourite such as a tennis ball, some scrunched up paper, whether or not you wrap the box and have a game of doggy pass the parcel or just present it as a challenge to open, your dog is mentally challenged and gets to revel in the goodies inside. Quick, easy and fun. Even a handful of your dog’s kibble in a cardboard tube with the ends folded shut can provide a simple way to challenge their mind at breakfast or dinner time.

But it is ultimately in our day to day lives with our dogs, that we truly unite, there is nothing quite like that bonding moment, as you make your way round the park with a happy pooch battling a force 10 gale and lashing rain, in your wellies and your dog walking coat, nodding solemnly at a stranger doing exactly the same thing, occasionally exchanging pleasantries or with a wry smile make a statement, ‘Great weather for ducks, and dogs evidently’. Or, as responsible dog parents, with that pocket poop bag in hand, clearing up after your furry friend and uniting in that moment of the joys of responsible dog ownership.

Or that ultimate final bonding moment, the one that unites us all, the one true thing that unites us as dog owners the most, we all think we have the best dog in the World, and the thing with that is, we are all right!

Longfic Series: A Tempest In Time:

Nearly seven years prior to the Honno-ji incident, a wormhole swept adrenaline junkie Katsuko and her brother Toshiie into Sengoku Japan. After an attack by bandits, the two are separated and Toshiie disappears. Katsuko is taken into the household of the enigmatic Yamaoka Akihira - initially as a maid. But Katsuko has other ideas, choosing to dress as a young man and become a courier for Aki. But that’s before Mitsunari and Okatsu discover that the Princess’s younger brother is the target of an assassin. That’s before they flee to a nearby forest to stop a coup against Oda Nobunaga. Most importantly, that’s before Mitsunari decides his feelings for Okatsu are anything but fake.

Courier, scout, daredevil, housemaid … liar: Katsuko has had many identities in the seven years since a wormhole sent her back in time to feudal Japan. After she and her mentor Akihira help Shingen Takeda fight off bandits, “Katsu” finds herself working for Shingen as a messenger.

He thinks she’s a boy. She thinks he’s the biggest womanizer in the province.

But there are others forces at work – an old enemy is closing in, her new boss has a fatal secret, an assassination plot threatens the lives of Katsu’s new friends, war is on the horizon… and that’s just in this timeline. With all that going on, it’s good that he doesn’t know she’s a woman.
